The theme of the conference is The Role of Multidisciplinary Research in Reinventing Higher Education: New Paradigms, Innovation and Growth. This conference ushers in a list of six conferences for this year scheduled in Paris, Sydney, Incheon, Jakarta, and two in the Philippines. You have come far and wide to bring with you unique cultures of research and publication from your respective countries. You serve as ambassadors of new knowledge and this conference provides the perfect opportunity for cross pollination. The International Association of Multidisciplinary Research is proud to launch six new journals for 2013. These are the IAMURE International Journal of Animal Ecology, Plant Ecology, Terrestrial Ecology, Marine Ecology, Aquatice Ecology and Molecular Biology. Our flora, fauna, fungi and bacteria are threatened due to anthropogenic activities which impact on the ecosystem habitats. Thus, research on interactions between living things and their environment is important if we have to survive in the next 100 years. The ISO certification of IAMURE has helped define our trade mark of quality of conferences, trainings, and publications. We are being modeled by other groups indicating that we break new ground each time. I am glad we have added new members from last year both institutional and individual. We have applied the Open Journal System for our online publications which facilitated our digital object identifiers from CrossRef USA. This DOI facilitates the recognition by ORCID on the track record of every researcher’s publication. Only articles with DOI are captured by ORCID and the world databases. With 15 journals currently in circulation around the world through our indexing companies, we are certain our studies will earn an exalted place in any of the journals. Conferences are nothing but travel and tour junkets if they do not result to good and credible publications. I hope and pray you will patronize our journals, conferences and trainings to sustain our phenomenal growth and development considering we are barely 18 months from our formation as an organization. Today, we add new features such as the inclusion of talent presentation in the oral research presentation either in the start or end of the scientific paper presentation to push the notion that researchers are holistically developed in the cognitive and affective dimensions. In 2013, IAMURE leads in the journal evaluation and indexation of journal publications from the world community. We have two websites, www.iamure.com and www.iaaj.info. We are developing a new one www.iamurejournals.com. The bottom line for relevance in research and publication is article influence. How did the research fulfill its purpose in solving our present problems? How did research nourish instruction, extension and production functions of universities? How did research contribute to the understanding of how things happen in society and what can we do about it? The new knowledge we learn in this conference supported by new found collaborations and partnerships in research will help us sustain the movement towards a reinvention of higher education!

Theme: The Role of Multidisciplinary Research in the Reinvention of Higher Education: New Paradigms, Innovations, and Growth
Dear all IAMURE members and participants of the conference. It is a good chance for us to meet and gather together in the event of International Conference in Higher Education Research (ICHER 2013) held in JW MARRIOTT hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia , January 21-23, 2013. This conference committee chooses the theme “The Role of Multidisciplinary Research in the Reinvention of Higher Education: New Paradigms, Innovations, and Growth.” As it is depicted in the theme of the conference, we have objectives such as (1) to exchange research discoveries and best practices in multidisciplinary research; (2) to cross-pollinate researchers to reinvent higher education responsive and accountable to the needs of the time; (3) to recognize meritorious achievements of researchers and leaders as source of inspiration across the world; and (4) to forge collaboration among research institutions and researchers for new partnerships and collaboration. In relation to such objectives, let me express my gratitude and appreciation to all of you who participate in this event. We can both exchange ideas and share experiences. Moreover, in this occasion, we can disseminate our research findings both in the form of oral presentation and in research article publication. This is the international researcher’s community who are willing and passionate to do research, disseminate it, and publish it in the academic journals. In that international scientific community, IAMURE (International Association of Multidisciplinary Research) provides us with facilities for doing academic activities. It deals with our creativity to initiate research with various topics: multidiscipline. This facility can be broken down into both oral presentations for dissemination of the research results and research article for journal publications. In other words, by joining this conference, we can do two academic activities simultaneously: research paper presentation and research article publication. As academicians, researchers, and practitioners with different perspectives, we are in the right place with the right choice and decision to come to this international conference with the objectives stated above. This is due to our responsibilities for developing our intellectuality and fields of sciences. By doing so, we hope that we can keep abreast of the present and future development of the science and technology as well: to reinvent and innovate. Specifically, concerning the research article publication, IAMURE have some reputable academic journals. These journals are the best places for putting our ideas related to the research results to be disseminated. Do research, disseminate and publish it!

The upcoming International Conference in Higher Education Research sponsored by IAMURE to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from January 21-23, 2013, gives prominence to the reality that multidisciplinary research can be one of the most productive and inspiring pursuits. It provides a venue for conversations and connections that lead to new knowledge. As a mode of discovery and education, it has delivered much already and promises more—a sustainable environment, healthier and more prosperous lives, new discoveries and technologies to inspire young minds, and a deeper understanding of our place in space and time. I extend with utmost sincerity our deepest congratulations and warm wishes to the International Association of Multidisciplinary Research (IAMURE) for this great undertaking. The theme for the conference : “The role of multidisciplinary research in the reinvention of higher education: new paradigms, innovations and growth “, is a powerful call to pursue varied research endeavors because as such it provides new challenges and opportunities to higher education while retaining the best of their legacy values. Collaboration is a distinguishing attribute of higher education. Universities are seeking ways to facilitate collaboration to enhance research, classes, foreign exchanges, alumni relationships, and private sector partnerships. A variety of venues have emerged to make collaboration easier and more accessible. Theme: The Role of Multidisciplinary Research in the Reinvention of Higher Education: New Paradigms, Innovations, and Growth
Research opens doors to greater opportunities on sharing of expertise and breeding new ideas. By association with fellows in the field, one continues to discover new dimensions of knowledge and develops a deeper understanding of the different layers and levels of interpretations which are based on scientific investigations of the issues and concerns which confront the world today. As one of the strong pillars of growth and development in the society, the academe sees itself as a wheel that propels its constituents to embrace research as a way of life. In keeping with change, more theories are explored to enrich and inspire instruction, varied strategies are experimented on in search for the right formula to advance the teaching and learning process, and collaborative efforts are crafted by those concerned to improve the educational system for the good of all. By forging connections and alliances with different parts of the world and by joining our minds together in occasions such as this International Conference in Higher Education Research (ICHER), we strengthen our conviction that there are solution to every problem; it just takes good research to unfold them. I congratulate the International Association of Multidisciplinary Research (IAMURE), as well as the rest of the organizers of this conference for staging such a great avenue for participants coming from different educational and research institutions around the world to meet in flesh and to match their minds in the name research. May this conference be a memorable experience to all the participants. More Power!

Message In behalf of the constituents of the Holy Cross of Davao College, Inc., I extend our warmest welcome to the organizers and participant of this International Conference in Higher Education here in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Looking back, I have seen the slow but dynamic shift of the role of education in the human society. Initially, our predecessors identified education as the hand that helps a person do better. “Do better for whom?” I ask. Educational leaders have shifted the reins to focus on making a person do better not for himself/herself but for the society, heightening the reason for being of humanity. Hence, change in any arena is certain. IAMURE, by its very own existence, introduced change in the dissemination, publication and event he culture of research, a known pillar of education. In one way or another, through IAMURE, Higher Educational Institutions across the globe are given the opportunity as well as the motivation to push their respective boundaries in embarking into research fields of varied disciplines. Subsequent, this manifests a concrete contribution in thrusting the frontiers of knowledge. With our active participation in IAMURE Conferences, we gradually discern unity amidst diversity. As we convene in the spirit of pursuit for truth through research, each one of us helps structure the world to make it significant for all the members of our society, in the manner Our Creator has signified His Love for us. As we say in Holy Cross of Davao College, “Ex Fide Ad Veritatem!”
My warm felicitations and congratulations to the prime movers of International Association of Multidisciplinary Research (IAMURE) for holding the International Conference in Higher Education Research 2013 (ICHER 2013) at JW Marriott Hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia on January 21-23, 2013. The theme of the conference “The Role of Multidisciplinary Research in the Reinvention of Higher Education: New Paradigm, Innovations and Growth”, is very timely as our academic institutions are more than ever, challenged to continuously innovate, strategize and improve the quality of education as we heed the call of globalizing education. Multidisciplinary research would expectably bring in fresh ideas and perspectives which will allow Higher Education Institutions to contribute inputs for pedagogical innovations, curricular program reengineering, and other strategic measures to continuously improve the knowledge, skills and attitude of our graduates. I am confident that this conference will be a great venue for educators to initiate changes that would result to the betterment of human life and society. I wish you success in all your endeavors towards improving the quality of research in Higher Education. Congratulations and Mabuhay!
With all these, I remain with high hopes that the next three days will provide the participants the venue to share cultures and fertilize research experience.

Dear IAMURE members and participants of the conference,
8
As a member of IAMURE and as the director of research center in my college, STIE Perbanas Surabaya, I would be glad to see you all to get together for the same purpose. As we have seen in the theme of this conference, IAMURE has a specific theme related to higher education and research. As it is chosen, the theme is “The Role of Multidisciplinary Research in the Reinvention of Higher Education: New Paradigms, Innovations, and Growth.” The conference theme above reminds us—as researchers and faculty members of university—of having to do our best with research activities and also of changing our attitude towards a better producing research results. These two academic behaviors cannot be realized without our own rigorous struggle for doing our best in relation to research habits.
Congratulations to the International Association of Multidisciplinary Research (IAMURE) for holding the 2013 International Conference in Higher Education Research (ICHER) on January 21-23, 2013 at the JW Marriott Hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia. The theme of the event, “The Role of Multidisciplinary Research in the Reinvention of Higher Education: New Paradigms, Innovations, and Growth.”, is a manifestation that in today’s knowledge there are powerful drivers for multidisciplinary research. Through collaborative initiatives, intellectual flexibility, and innovative partnerships of researchers from different disciplines can accomplish more by teaming. Although multidisciplinary research teams are well equipped to attack complex problems, succeeding in such endeavors is not so easy.
Again, the objectives are really concerned with our jobs as researchers and faculty members. First of all, the objective is (1) to exchange research discoveries and best practices in multidisciplinary research. This has to do with our academic activities that must not be ignored for this is our main job as researchers in the world.
My warmest congratulations to IAMURE and its President, Dr. Genaro V. Japos for the untiring and endless leadership to strengthen the World in the field of research. My sincerest appreciation to the organization.
The second objective is (2) to cross-pollinate researchers to reinvent higher education responsive and accountable to the needs of the time. This objective is definitely becoming our dream that must come true in our daily lives through academic endeavors. To make it come true it must be done through hard efforts. One of the efforts to do so is joining this scientific organization that is IAMURE.
Once again, CONGRATULATIONS and Mabuhay!
The third objective as it is depicted in our theme here is (3) to recognize meritorious achievements of researchers and leaders as source of inspiration across the world. We believe that such organization with this vision and mission that is IAMURE feels obliged to provide the prospective awardees for their academic efforts. Therefore, IAMURE is the right place for us to get together in this forum.
Lesley Casas Lubos, PhD Associate Director, Liceo Mindanao Center for Biodiversity Conservation Editor in chief, Asian Journal of Biodiversity Liceo de Cagayan University
Lets but not least, is the fourth objective in this theme. It is (4) to forge collaboration among research institutions and researchers for new partnerships and collaboration. All members and participants in this conference not only present and publish the research results. We can also do collaboration and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with other universities from different countries. For that reason, this organization, IAMURE, is also the right place for us to do collaboration. It is a good appreciation for us as the host and as well as the member of IAMURE, I appreciate your participation and involvement in this conference. Therefore, I would also like to express my gratitude to all of you and hope that we can share experiences, change ideas, and have collaboration one another for better results of further research in future.

Message This year’s theme, “The Role of Multidisciplinary Research in the Reinvention of Higher Education: New Paradigms, Innovations and Growth,” exactly responds to the new challenges now in the Higher Education arena. It is through this conference that faculty members of higher institutions like Surigao del Sur State University, Tandag City, Surigao del Sur, Philippines could have the opportunity to showcase their research capabilities thereby boosting their confidence as faculty-researchers likewise updating their knowledge on the different aspects of multidisciplinary research. Furthermore, holding this admirable international conference would offer an avenue for institutions of higher learning faculty-researchers across the universe to compare notes of their research capabilities as well as gain insights from the ideas disclosed and shared during the conference. In this way, no institutions of higher learning would be left behind in the advances, new paradigms, and growth with respect to their role in multidisciplinary research. At the outset, this gathering manifests the strong sense of responsiveness of IAMURE to the demands of time in higher education. In effect, IAMURE helps facilitate the effort of higher education institutions across the universe, our nation in particular to face squarely the challenges ahead of us. Indeed, this gathering deserves a commendation. My congratulations to IAMURE!

Extension services is one of the fourfold functions of higher education institutions. This study assessed the extent of implementation of the extension services programs of state technological institutions in a geographic region in the Philippines. The program implementers were sampled to draw data along the aspects of attainment of objectives, program relevance, and effectiveness of the strategies and activities adopted as well as the attainment of objectives, program relevance, and effectiveness of the strategies and activities adopted as well as the extent of the adequacy of resources available to the implementers. The findings showed two of three institutions with favorable results as to attainment of objectives, program relevance and strategies adopted as well as the extent of adequacy of resources in the delivery of services. To address gaps, this study further identified recommendations to enhance the capabilities of implementers such as trainings in extension services delivery, fund sourcing and forging institutional linkages or networking.
The classical economists painted a beautiful picture about capitalism under the jargon globally known as laissez-faire. This doctrine hypnotized several societies as indexed by the globalization of commerce and at present the advent of economic integration. It is from these contentions that the researcher wanted to expose the not so famous side of capitalism as experienced by the Boholanos and ascertained the reasons behind the exclusivity of its benefits. To deliver the arguments anchored on neutrality, an intensive literature review was done to bring forward the glory and failure of capitalism. This was complemented by a field interview in order to take the views of the businessmen, the buyers, the government and the church. The results undeniably put forward the sterile role played by capitalism and the capitalists in general. The alluring fruits of free enterprise taste not only sweet but also sour. It was discovered that the promised benefits of trade failed to trickle down to all market players. In the case of Bohol, only the capitalists exclusively amassed greater wealth at the expense of the society. The bi-products of the economic transactions were unloaded to the ordinary citizen in the form of waste across all dimensions.

Generalized Fuzzy Continuous Maps in Fuzzy Topological Spaces
24
The study of continuity and its weaker forms constitutes an established branch of investigation in general topological spaces. Recently some researchers have tried to extend these studies to the broader framework of fuzzy topological spaces. N. Ajmal proposed a theory of localization in the study of continuity and its weaker forms in fuzzy setting. Using two notions of membership of a fuzzy point to a fuzzy set, neighborhood structure of fuzzy point and quasi-neighborhood structure of a fuzzy point, an investigation of fuzzy continuity, fuzzy alfa- continuity, fuzzy beta- continuity functions, and fuzzy almost quasi continuous functions have been carried out in the present study. The purpose of this paper is to introduce and study the concepts of generalized fuzzy continuous maps, which includes the class of fuzzy continuous maps.

Applying Just-In-Time Learning and Flipped Classrooms in Computer Engineering Class Priyakorn Pusawiro pusawiro@cpe.kmutt.ac.th King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Bangkok, Thailand Day 1: Jan 21, 2013 · Time: 3:41 - 4:00 pm Venue: Sapphire 1 Recently, the novel pedagogies with the support of Internet technology have emerged in higher education. The ‘Just-in-time Learning’ and the ‘Flipped Classrooms’ are among the approaches. Students who encounter a problem can find solutions, whenever they need, via online resources and free world-class education lectures by the guide of the lecturers. To make classroom more interesting, flipped classroom was deployed to alter the role of students from passive learners to active ones. We combined both the pedagogical concepts in the “Computer Engineering Exploration” which is an introduction to computer engineering course. The objective of the course is to teach practical concepts of computer system and its components including electrical circuits, hardware interfacing, operating system, database, and web services. Moreover, presentation skills and analytical thinking were embedded throughout the lecture to prepare students for their academic years. During the semester, students experience knowledge sharing in class, specifically class brainstorming, free discussion, rapid feedback, shared projects, and informal learning. We found that some students engage more deeply with the content. However, a large classroom may leave some students unattended which makes students lagged behind and lose their interest in the contents. Generally, the approaches work well. But lecturers have to design the syllabus based on their curriculum and resources. Philippine stateuniversities and colleges, in fulfilling their mandate for extension services, have sought poverty alleviation interventions to lift the quality of life. This study was conducted to evaluate the skills training provided by SUCs in the province of Tarlac to their respective communities to help alleviate poverty. This study used the input-output model in evaluating the skills trainings rendered by the SUCs in Region III from 2009 to 2011. The inputs to the programs were the skills trainings, the materials used for trainings, the personnel involved, while the output evaluation looked into the benefits derived from the training. All school administrators and training personnel of the SUCs were included in the study along with 140 out of 602 training recipients who were randomly sampled. Results show that skills trainings were requested by the marginalized sectors of the province of Tarlac since locations of trainings were remote and far flung rural communities. Among the in-demand training courses requested by the community recipients were Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Basic Culinary Arts, Small Engine Repair, Building wiring food processing and computer Literacy. The trainees were provided adequate tools and equipment while the trainers were highly qualified workforce certified by TESDA. Training recipients were personally and psychologically uplifted with self-fulfillment and improved self-esteem. There was a significant increase on the number of recipients who acquired jobs after they attended the trainings. The Wilcoxon signed ranks test between the difference on number of jobs before and after the trainings was significantat 0.27. The SUCs in Tarlac Province are providing the community with relevant trainings that give the community people necessary skills that can improve their chances of landing a job. This study aim to analyze the performance of the University of Northern Philippines in the Licensure Examination for Teachers, 2001 to 2010. It determined the following: profile of the examinees such as gender, specialization and year graduated; performance along the components of LET; the institutional passing rates; the relationship between LET performance and examinee profile. Using the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) results, this study employed documentary analysis and correlation research designs. The mean, skewness, kurtosis and correlation analysis were used as statistical treatments. The findings showed negatively skewed distributions of LET scores in general education, professional and specialization courses. This indicated that, relative to the mean score, there were more examinees who garnered higher scores compared to those who obtained lower scores. The examinees had extreme scores hence, they exhibited platykurtic distributions. The institutional passing rates were consistently higher than the national passing rates for LET elementary and secondary. Specialization is significantly correlated with LET performance. By focusing on the PRC-LET competencies and DepEd-CHED-NCBTS requirements during the pre-service teaching and learning processes and revising specialization courses, LET performance will be improved. This study serves as exchange information along licensure examination for teachers in response to the challenges for global competitiveness. Leadership style has important role for bringing people in organization to achieve the goal. Many researchers explore the leadership styles that constribute to transforming organization in uncertain conditions. In addition, transformational leadership and authentic leadership style are styles of leadership which will be compatible in uncertain situation. This research objective is to explore the model of transformational and authentic leadership in the holding companies of newspaper media when they were facing turbulant conditions and environmental situation with unethical behavior. Thus, this is an explorative study using the media companies of newspapers for the data analysis. Four dimensions of transformational leadership such as charisma, individual consideration, intelectual stimulation, and inspiration are considered able to create the dynamic organization with its vision to develop corporate culture. Such a dynamic organization can lead to the expected culture as directed by the the leader. More importantly, ethical behavior can also be built by means of the role model of leader who adopts authentic leadership style. Besides that, this study also describes how the leader articulates these leadership styles.

Medicines and insecticides are very expensive nowadays. This situation propelled the researchers to look into the potential uses of abundant mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata Laurentii). This experimental study determined the phytochemical screening and insecticidal testing of mother-in-law’s tongue. Three phases were included: extraction, phytochemical screening (Mayer, Wagner, Froth, Color, Fehling, Gelatin and Liebermann Burchard) and insecticidal testing on different insects. Mean, Standard Deviation and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze the data. Results showed that the ethanol extract of the leaves and rhizomes contain alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, tannins, sterols and triterpenes. The leaves and rhizomes of Sansevieria trifasciata can be made into insecticides. The Sansevieria rhizome is the most effective followed by the Sansevieria leaf and the last is the commercial carbamate. Researchers recommend that studies should be conducted for the quantitative analyses of alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, tannins, sterols and triterpenes present in the whole plant. Pharmacological testing and microbiological assay of the whole plant are recommended too. The leaves and rhizomes can be organic insecticides and are recommended for farmers/researchers to use in their crops. Further studies should be conducted using other concentrations of the leaves and rhizomes or mixed together against insects.
This study documents the orally transmitted but never written knowledge about ethnomedicinal botanicals (EMB) before they are lost as native healers die out and replaced by modern medical practitioners; the natural habitat lost due to the encroachment of fast paced modern changes and consequent destruction of virgin forests. EMB used by three ethnoliguistic communities (EC) in Mindanao, Philippines (Manobo, Talaandig and Higaonon) were identified with the aid of their respective ethnomedicinal practitioners (baylan, datu), photographed in situ, samples collected, herbarium-preserved and their taxonomy established. Identified were 86 species of EMB belonging to 80 genera and 44 families; 12 commonly used by all three EC, two (2) common among the Talaandig and Higaonon, 15 common among the Manobo and Higaonon, 19 used only by the Higaonon, 23 used only by the Manobo, 13 used only by the Talaandig while 25 remains unidentified, possibly endemic. Emphasizing the importance of “sevens” (shoot, leaves, root, bark, fruit), 32 common ailments were treated through decoction, infusion, maceration, juice extraction and poultice. In conclusion, the three EC possess knowledge about EMB that are potential sources of medicinal therapeutics. Confirmation of their efficacy is being investigated in the light of modern, evidence-based medicine.

Organic Insecticides are environment friendly and cheap. Hence, the researcher explored the insecticidal testing of Sansevieria trifasciata as applied to Phaseolus vulgaris. This investigation determined: a) the percentages of string beans germinated after soaking the seeds in different insecticides and the plants and leaves damaged by insects b) the significant differences between and among the percentage of plants and leaves damaged by insects c) the growth of the string beans after sprayed with Sansevieria trifasciata and the significant differences between and among the efficacy of the insecticides on the growth of string beans. This study used Randomized Complete Block Design with four treatments and three blocks. Percentage was used on germination of seeds and plants and leaves damaged by insects. Mean and standard deviation were used to determine the growth of string beans and analysis of variance was used to determine the significant differences in the efficacy of insecticides. The least significant difference was used to determine which insecticides were significantly different. Results showed that Sansevieria trifasciata insecticides are as effective as the commercial one. Researchers recommend that farmers/researchers should use Sansevieria trifasciata. Studies should be conducted on the insecticidal properties of the plant using other concentrations.
Pole placement based power system stabilizer designs are well known for their superior control capabilities when compared to the conventional lead-lag power system stabilizers. They generally require feedback of all the state variables. As power system state variables are generally not measurable they have not seen much of practical realization. In multi machine systems pole placement designs require feedback of other machine states as well. This paper proposes a new approach for the pole placement based PSS. In this paper, recently proposed modified Heffron Phillip’s model is used for the PSS design. Modified Heffron Phillip’s model is derived by taking the secondary bus voltage of the step-up transformer as reference instead of infinite bus. State variables of this model are locally measurable, which makes the pole placement design decentralized and independent of the external system information. The performance of the proposed controller is evaluated on a Multi - Machine systems over a wide range of operating conditions. The proposed PSS performance is found to be better under strong, weak and leading power factor conditions where the conventional PSS generally fails to provide satisfactory damping and the performance is more or less similar to the conventional PSS performance under nominal conditions.

Math for Alms: Numeracy and Heuristics of Unschooled and Non-Vending Street Children
30
Numeracy and Heutistics are important concepts in the pedagogy of Mathematics. This study is an attempt to investigate the numeracy skills and heuristics of street children in the city of Manila, Philippines; specifically those who have not experienced being a vendor and have never had any experience of formal schooling. The descriptive method of research was used, aimed at drawing the profiles of the unschooled and non-vending street children, determining the common numeracy skills they possess, and identifying factors that contributed to these incidental learning. Guided interview and oral assessment of numeracy skills were conducted on children participants. Using qualitative techniques, three experts formed the committee who agreed on the meanings derive from the interview and oral assessment. Findings revealed that these street children are not void of numeracy. They can count, especially money, up to really large numbers, perform addition, subtraction, and multiplication of whole numbers, but only using Filipino mixed with a few Spanish words for money and counting. They perform operations and do problem solving by relating the situation to how they play or gamble, buy items from the store, and count change. Unschooled and non-vending street children learned their numeracy and heuristics from uneducated parents during their toddler years, and through personal experience largely attributed to consumerism and alms begging. Wesley Evan Kendall ORCID No. 0000-0003-2506-8135 Wesley.Kendall@rmit.edu.vn Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Hanoi, Vietnam Day 2: Jan 22, 2013 · Time: 4:31 - 4:50 pm Venue: Sapphire 1 This paper proposes a new social science oriented methodological approach to examining the behaviour of different policymaker’s actions in the process of shaping and implementing public policies. Under this new model, the policymakers’ behaviour constitutes the dependant variable under observation in the study, while various external mechanisms are treated as independent variables acting to manipulate policy outcomes. Each of the objects studied in their respective models, as well as each of the external mechanisms, are inextricably intertwined in the political systems which enact, adjudicate, and ultimately implement policy. As complex organizations, these dependant variables are infinitely complicated and their behavioural patterns subject to multiple independent variable impacts. This proposed case study model will focus on individual cases that allow for an in depth examination of events and draw inferential causal connections using a number of innovative techniques. The mechanisms of policy change, or the independent variables, will additionally be explored using a case study analysis and intervening causal factors will be carefully examined by using within case analysis to plot interrelationships among event observations. The validity of a hypothesis would be rigorously tested by both within-case analyses which examine different elements of the case for intervening causes, and will be supplemented by a comparative cross-case analysis when appropriate, and further bolstered by a novel interview process to reject or reinforce inferential assumptions drawn from the model. This unique combination of qualitative testing methodologies when applied in linear sequence creates a rigorous analytical framework with enhanced internal and external model validity that can be utilized across social science disciplines. Potentials of “Teaching through Active Learning” in Lowering the Level of Students’ Math Anxiety Manuel Roman Tanpoco ORCID No. 0000-0002-0009-8250 mtanpoco@gmail.com Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Tanjong Malim, Malaysia Day 2: Jan 22, 2013 · Time: 4:51 - 5:10 pm Venue: Sapphire 1 Teaching through active learning has been observed as a potential pedagogy in reducing Math anxiety. This study aimed to determine if teaching mathematics through active learning could be one measure by which students’ anxiety of the subject could be significantly lessened. Using a quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent group pretest-posttest design, the effects of teaching the chapter on quadratic equations with active learning strategies on students’ math anxiety were examined. The experimental group was taught using active learning strategies focused on group dynamics and games; while the control group was taught using convention. Triangulation was used in gathering data. To measure math anxiety before and after treatment, Bai’s (2009) Math Anxiety Scale-Revised (MAS-R) was used. The findings indicated that there is a significantly lower math anxiety score (p<0.01) among students from the experimental group than those from the control group after treatment. Further, there is a significant difference in the pretest and posttest scores of students in the experimental group (p<0.01), while no significant difference was noted in the control group (p<0.05). Meanwhile, no significant difference was noted on the academic performance of the two groups. With the interview on students supporting these results, it is concluded that teaching mathematics through active learning may potentially lessen math anxiety among students without sacrificing academic performance of students. Carbon Dating the Image of Apo Sto. Cristo de Lubao: From Oral History to Scientific Inquiry Rodrigo M. Sicat ORCID No. 0000-0002-9833-2550 Rodrigo_Sicat@yahoo.com Tarlac State University, Tarlac, Philippines Day 2: Jan 22, 2013 · Time: 1:00 - 1:20 pm Venue: Sapphire 1 Oral history is important in preserving significant milestones in human experience. This investigative research was conducted to identify the age of the holy Crucifix using radiocarbon dating method. Specifically, it aims to carry out the study by identifying the age of the sacred Cross of the Crucified Image of Christ through radiocarbon dating procedures, and to provide scientific information to the people vis-à-vis results of the carbon dating analysis. Based on the findings of the study, radiocarbon dating analyses showed that Beta-316804 (The Wooden Cross) indicated a measured radiocarbon age Cal AD 1650 to 1690 (Cal BP 300 to 260) compared to Beta-316805 (Image of Christ) Cal AD 1680 to 1730 (Cal BP 270 to 220). Results also disclosed that at 2-sigma statistics (95% probability), 2 dates yielded overlapping ranges, indicating that the results are statistically identical. Analyses of samples indicated that samples came from the same tree. Beta-316804 (The Wooden Cross) is slightly older than Beta-316805 (Christ’s Ime).In conclusion, the study revealed the proximity of the radiocarbon dating analyses to the traditional accounts of the people of Lubao, Pampanga. Considering the highly sensitive nature of analytical chemistry apparatuses, the time ranges (ages) drawn from the chemical analyses were closely proximate to the oral history accounts of the place. The results revealed the antiquity of the Crucifix (Cross and Image of Christ).
