message Welcome to Davao City, the Largest City in the world! We at IAMURE are pleased to organize this training to levitate the state of journal publications, peer review and scientific writing in this country towards international standards. We have exerted optimum efforts to adopt the most advanced knowledge in journal publications making us the most advanced in the Philippines today. IAMURE and PAIR are the first members of cross ref of USA in the Philippines and the first journals to achieve ISO certification. We are working for our membership with orcid, the open researcher and contributor identification which was launched for the public last October of 2012. We want all our members and clients to be the first in the country to acquire orcid , a perpetual number system for researchers. We have great success in promoting plagiarism detection technology and grammar checker from grammarly for journal publications. Now we are extending these testing services to our members at minimal cost. I am grateful to Dr. Veneracion G. Cabana, a seasoned researcher for 42 years from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and Dr. Salvador de la Peña III , University Editor of Liceo de Cagayan University for accepting the challenge of nourishing our knowledge in this training. In particular, I commend the contributions of Dr. Maria Linda Arquiza, University of Mindanao, Dr. Renan Limjuco, University of the Immaculate Conception, Ms. Kari Ann Bitgue of Holy Cross of Davao College, Dr. Randy Tudy of Cor Jesu College of Digos City, Dr. Lucy Lupo of Davao Doctors College and the other schools in Davao City for the warm cooperation and support in behalf of their presidents. Improvised Millisecond Timer for Selected Experiments on Motion for General Physics Neil C. Capricho and Raymundo S. Moso Engineering Program University of the Immaculate Conception, Davao City Time: 3:30 - 3:50 p.m. Venue: D’azure, Grand Men Seng Hotel This study is an experimental development which aimed to improvise a millisecond timer for motion experiments in General Physics. Specifically, it intended to design an opto-isolator circuitry with more sensitive response, which can interface with the stopwatches in the laboratory stockroom. This investigation also sought to describe the features of the improvised millisecond timer and to assess its comparability with the multifunctional millisecond timer in terms of time readings in each of the following experiments, namely: Slow Ball, Free Fall, Uniform Acceleration on an Inclined Plane, and Pendulum. Statistical analyses employed means, standard deviations and t-test to measure the significance of the difference in time readings. Results revealed that the improvised timer was as efficient as the multifunctional timer with respect to the experiments included in the study since the p-values were all greater than 0.05, implying that for each laboratory activity, there is no significant difference in the time readings from the two devices.
Recognition of Traffic Weight Using Sobel Edge Detection Method and K-Nearest Neighbor Algorithm Eric John G. This study explored the use of Sobel Edge Detection and K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm in classifying the traffic weight of a given captured image. A software application that accepts a snapshot of a given intersection as input was created. The application could determine the traffic weight of the given snapshot, as whether it is light, moderate, or heavy by comparing it to a database of images using the K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm. The accuracy of the result was highly dependent on the training data and the quality of the snapshot. Findings of the study were able to establish that the use of Sobel Edge Detection and K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm gave significant results in recognizing the weight of a given snapshot of traffic.

Correlates of Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Examination: An Analysis of Five Year Performance Emma V. Sagarino and Deogracia B. Corpuz Accountancy and Business Administration Program University of the Immaculate Conception, Davao City Time: 4:11 - 4:30 p.m. Venue: D’azure, Grand Men Seng Hotel With the goal of developing an intervention program to further improve the performance of the UIC accountancy graduates in the CPA board examination, the researchers were motivated to conduct this particular investigation which examined the performance of the accountancy program in the areas of academic performance (average grade), retention rates, mock board and CPA board examination ratings covering the five Academic Years 2005-2006 to 2009-2010. Using Pearson r correlation coefficient it established the relationship between each of the academic performance and mock board to the board examination. Interviews with selected UIC accountancy graduates who are now CPAs determined the facilitating and hindering factors in passing the board examination. The UIC accountancy graduates showed improvement in their academic performance over the years. Yet in terms of mock board examination, the earlier graduates (2006 to 2009) performed better as compared to those who graduated in 2010. UIC board examination passing rates marked an upward trend in the last three years (2008 to 2010). Statistical analysis indicates that only academic performance has a moderately positive relationship with the board examination. Facilitating factors include intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, support and encouragement of family members and mentors, and the academic and spiritual preparations. Lack of confidence hindered them to succeed on the first take of the CPA board examination.
Jigsaw Approach in Cooperative Learning: Its Effect in Problem Solving Skills for Physics Ma. Teresa M. Gravino and Renan P. Limjuco Engineering Program University of the Immaculate Conception, Davao City Time: 4:31-4:50 p.m. Venue: D’azure, Grand Men Seng Hotel This study was conducted to determine whether or not the jigsaw approach as a cooperative learning strategy can significantly improve the problem solving skills in physics of the First Year Pharmacy students of the University of the Immaculate Conception for School Year 2011-2012. The researchers used the quasiexperimental design and purposively chose one class with forty students to compose the experimental group and another class of the same size to form the control group. The students from the experimental group were supervised through the jigsaw approach for three weeks as they studied Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion. The test scores from the 50-multiple choice-item Physics Questionnaire (α = 0.90) were the data used in the study. Frequency count, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test were the statistical tools employed in the analyses of the data. Findings of the study revealed that the problem solving skills in physics of the Pharmacy students were significantly improved by the jigsaw approach. The researchers also employed a focus group discussion for the triangulation of the method which validated that students who were subjected to jigsaw approach became more proficient, responsible, facilitative, and approachable as learners. The students felt that they needed to study not only for themselves but also for their group mates.

PLENARY SESSION DAY 2 The Heavy Metal Levels and Microbial Load of the Top Five Locally-Manufactured and Imported Food Supplement Capsules in Davao City Marie Azeneth Josol-Jagape zenthjosol@yahoo.com Pharmacy/Chemistry Program University of the Immaculate Conception, Davao City Time: 3:00 - 3:20 p.m. Venue: D’azure, Grand Men Seng Hotel Food supplement capsules are reasonably beneficial to humans. However, to eliminate misconception and misuse, the consumers must be informed of the potential risk of these products due to their heavy metal and microbial contents. Thus, the primary purpose of this study is to determine the heavy metal level and microbial load of the top five food supplement capsules in Davao City, both for the locally-manufactured and imported products. The leading food supplement capsules which were identified through a survey of drug and retail outlets were analyzed and evaluated for their conformance to Food and Drug Administration standards. Results showed that none of the leading food supplement capsules locally manufactured and imported conformed to the maximum level of Lead (10 µg/g) and Cadmium (0.30 µg/g). Based on the analysis of the samples, lead (Pb) concentration ranges from 10.90 – 19.97 µg/g and 8.99 – 24.87 and mean values 13.90 and 13.13µg/g for both locally manufactured and imported products. Similar findings were noted for the level of Cadmium (Cd) which ranges at concentrations of 2.21 - 3.20 and 2.00 – 4.08 µg/g with mean values of 2.82 and 2.71µg/g for both locally manufactured and imported capsules. On the contrary, Mercury (Hg) level on the tested products were <0.05 µg/g indicating conformance to the standard. Furthermore, results for microbiological test noted that none of the five leading herbal capsules locally manufactured and imported have exceeded the maximum limit set by FDA. Although the products generally meet the standard microbial quality, the alarming amount of heavy metal should be addressed.
Foreign Students in the University of the Immaculate Conception and their Multi-Faceted Experiences Mona L. Laya and Bienvinido E. Infante, and Maribeth Q. Galindo Social Science Department University of the Immaculate Conception, Davao City Time: 3:21 - 3:40 p.m. Venue: D’azure, Grand Men Seng Hotel This qualitative study aimed to present baseline information about the academic and social experiences of the foreign students at the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC). The researchers conducted a focus group discussion involving 15 of them who are currently enrolled in various programs of the university. Through an in-depth interview, it was found that most of the foreign students have known UIC via a recommendation of a friend, or the internet. Findings revealed that the existence of the foreign students in UIC is characterized both by pleasant and unpleasant experiences. The positive feedback about the UIC educational system opens a possibility for more influx of foreign students while the unpleasant experiences pose dramatic amendments in established policies of the university.

Bacteriological, Toxicological and Mutagenic Evaluations of the Formulated Ointment of Knobweed (Hyptis capitata Jacq., Lamiaceae) Leaf Extract Against MethicillinResistant Staphylococcus aureus Judee N. Nogodula, Rose Ann S. Mancenido, Ivana Lee M. Miranda, and Darlene S. Quiñon Pharmacy/Chemistry Department University of the Immaculate Conception, Davao City Time: 3:41 - 4:00 p.m. Venue: D’azure, Grand Men Seng Hotel The emergence of multiple drug resistant Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a global problem. However, many plants, specifically found from Mindanaon lumads, still have potential curative property for different ailments. Hence, the ethnopharmacologic practice of the knobweed (Hyptis capitata) was scientifically assessed on its antibacterial activity, its toxicity, mutagenicity and pharmacological screenings of crude leaf extract in the formulation of ointment as treatment of MRSA infections. The extract was subjected for Acute Dermal Toxicity using female albino rabbits for 14 days while antibacterial activities were investigated using Kirby Bauer method, minimum inhibitory concentration and potency test. Salmonella typhimurium TA98 was used for Ames test. Pharmacological assay was limited to physical characteristics of ointment and sensitivity (patch) test using albino rabbits from 24 to 72 hours of observation. Results revealed that leaf extract was not toxic and it had a promising antibacterial action with the zone of inhibition of 19.22 mm (±0.82) on MRSA ATCC 45300 and 17.41 mm ±0.77 on its clinical isolate. Moreover, it had similar potency with Vancomycin at 6.54ug. MIC established the reduction of cell viability at 0.0263g/mL. Meanwhile no revertant colonies grown hence, it was not mutagenic. Efficacy of ointment with a hydrophilic base exhibited zone of inhibition of 16.11 mm (±1.73) on MRSA ATCC and 16.12 mm (± 2.08) for clinical isolate. Neither erythema nor edema was observed on the rabbit’s skin when applied with the formulated ointment having a pH 6, brown appearance and grass-like odor.
Cultural Awareness on Folkdances of Secondary School Students in Davao City Porferia S. Poralan Liberal Arts Program University of the Immaculate Conception – Davao City Time: 4:01 - 4:20 p.m. Venue: D’azure, Grand Men Seng Hotel Cultural awareness is the foundation of communication and it involves the ability of standing back from ourselves and becoming aware of our cultural values, beliefs and perceptions. More than ever, the world today needs culturally aware citizens because of the effect of globalization. It is in this premise that this study was conducted to determine the level of general knowledge on folkdances as a measure in determining the cultural awareness of the secondary students of Davao City. The respondents of the study were the 1436 secondary school students enrolled in public high schools from three congressional districts in Davao City during Academic Year 2011-12. Arithmetic mean was used to describe the results of the study. A 20-item multiple choice test was administered. Findings revealed that the level of cultural awareness is good as quantified by a mean score of 11.03. Among the three districts in Davao City, District 1 garnered the highest points in the score. Based on the data gathered and among the items in the test, the highest level of awareness that the respondents reported was about the Tinikling which registered 94% accuracy rate. The least that the respondents were aware of is on the National Folk Dance Troupe of the Philippines which got only 16% accuracy rate.

Stakeholder’s Program Evaluation and Review: An Enhancement of Computer Engineering Curricular Program Renan P. Limjuco and Juvie Pauline L. Relacion Engineering Program University of the Immaculate Conception, Davao City Time: 4:21 - 4:40 p.m. Venue: D’azure, Grand Men Seng Hotel As a response to the PAASCU recommendation that the University of the Immaculate Conception conduct a program evaluation to assess the relevance and effectiveness of its Computer Engineering (CpE) curriculum, this study was ventured into to draw out the significant insights of faculty, alumni industry practitioners, upperclassmen, and other academicians regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the said engineering program, to level up its content and instruction for competitiveness and efficacy. Employing a focus group discussion involving 3 faculty members, 3 alumni industry practitioners, and 6 upperclassmen from the CpE program, queries bordering on the relevance and responsiveness of the curriculum, expectations of the industry from CpE graduates, as well as the level of competence of these graduates, were addressed by the researchers. Although findings revealed a balanced view of the participants regarding the plus and minus points of the existing CpE curriculum at UIC, a majority of them expressed that a relevant curriculum is one that is responsive to the needs of the present times. Alumni industry practitioners pointed out the significant gap between theory and practice-- a missing link between vision and reality. This result implies strongly that the framework upon which the program was founded does not assure competence in application. On the other hand, the peripheral views of the students highlighted the inadequacies of instruction eclipsing the ideal nature of subject sequencing and evolution.
THE EFFECT OF GARLIC (Alium sativum) ON Staphylococcus aureus AND Pseudomonas aeruginosa WHICH CAUSE SKIN INFECTIONS Ace Ronald C. Sarabia Medical Laboratory Science Program University of the Immaculate Conception, Davao City Time: 4:21 - 4:40 p.m. Venue: D’azure, Grand Men Seng Hotel Common ailments experienced by individuals are often caused by bacteria. These are microorganisms which may cause certain abnormalities to the normal functions of the body. This study mainly focused on two microorganisms, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These bacteria are common pathogens of the skin, and are known for causing skin irritation. In the search of less expensive and abundant source of medication, this study made use of garlic and its antibacterial effect. With the use of Slide and Pour plate methods, the bactericidal effect of garlic against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was tested. These methods measured qualitatively and quantitatively the effects of garlic against the test microorganisms. The results of the Slide and Pour plate methods are conclusive of garlic’s bactericidal effect against the two microorganisms. Garlic does have antibacterial properties and it is proven in this study. Although results show the killing capacity of the garlic extract against microorganisms, the dose needed in order to actually kill the bacteria is not determined.
