Matching socks, luft, shaved guns and closing the gap.

The rules are important. There were teachers and students. Those who fell fowl were told. They, generally, learned and came out of the experience better cyclists. Better people. We are all still learning. Some more than others. All are be safe in the knowledge we are not tr***hletes.

Don’t forget the coffee though. There is no “i” in coffee.

There were a couple of cardinal coffee sins around the table. Most henous, the request for a coffee that should be reserved for 70’s UK TV dramas. Instant. Though in France, there is no excuse. Coffee blinded one, serving himself, unwittingly, ahead of invited friends. Duly reprimanded, he continued to creak the Long Weekender out to the finish.

No matter the time constraints, sometimes it’s not the clock that tells you when you are done.

The Rules Committee had to split on the second to last day. Flights, however, did not get in the way of the biggest ride and two major Cols. More importantly, perhaps, the schedule did not stop the Strava Grand Fondo being ticked. Only then - and after an audatious village line sprint, after a 10k leadout - was the day’s ride deemed to be complete. Priorities in check still.

The Rules and creaks never got in the way of riding like Gents and Ladies. An experience, not a race.

Beyond rules we had to ‘obey’ and inspite of bike and bodily creaks that surfaced, never did they prevent us being Ladies and Gents in our riding. Off bike, with our ‘wit’, perhaps, on bike never. As Ladies and Gents, we did our best to ‘salut’ the locals and immerse ourselves, as much as we could, in the villages we visited. Part of making it an experience, not just a visit.
