WELCOME It doesn’t happen very often - that is a food supplement being examined under double-blind, placebo controlled clinical standards. But that is exactly what has occurred with a British probiotic called Symprove®. Two London Universities have independently scored it as excellent and one has highlighted how successful it is in the treatment of severe IBS, (irritable bowel syndrome) - a condition that can be very painful and debilitating. Meanwhile, calorie restriction remains currently the only ‘proven’ life extension method for mammals, (and therefore presumably humans too); but no one can deny that a near starvation diet is one that most people would not care to endure. So maybe the answer lies in Dr. Marios Kyriazis article about ‘calorie restriction mimetics?’ CRMs are substances that can ‘trick’ the body into believing it is consuming less. Plus, Dr. Richard Lippman looks at what can happen to our fitness as we age, noting that older individuals need to be careful in the type and vigor of the exercise they choose. He shows us that hormones, free radical scavengers and peptides can help to overcome damage- to prevent sarcopenia, (the loss of muscle strength and mass). Okay, I’m off to the gym!

FOREFRONT Viva Vitamin D Not a week seems to go by without more research being published extolling the benefits of vitamin D, this time new research from Cambridge University in the UK revealed the positive effects of maintaining high concentrations in the blood. The study was designed to discover the optimal blood levels of the vitamin and followed 641 adults aged between 42 and 82 for 13 years. Data revealed that for every 2- nmol/L increase in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin

D, the risks of cardiovascular disease decreased by 4%, respiratory disease by 11%, and fractures by 11%. The lowest mortality rates were observed in individuals with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations above 90 nmol/L. Vitamin D is cheaply and widely available but the evidence is mounting that it is a vital vitamin and people of all ages should seek to maintain an optimal level year round.

Magnesium Improves Metabolic Markers Researchers from France collected data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 20012010 and determined the magnesium intake from food alone and also from food plus dietary supplements. Adults with an adequate intake of magnesium from their diet had significantly different HOMA-IR – a measure of insulin resistance,

systolic blood pressure, and HDL-cholesterol, compared to subjects with inadequate intake of magnesium from food. Adults with an adequate intake of magnesium from food that also took a dietary supplement had significant differences in waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, and HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol. The team observed that a higher dietary intake of magnesium from all sources

was associated with “significantly reduced odds ratios for elevated glycohemoglobin, metabolic syndrome, obesity, overweight or obesity, elevated waist circumference, elevated systolic blood pressure, reduced HDL and elevated C-reactive protein.” The study authors concluded that: “there is a beneficial relationship between dietary magnesium intake and diabetes-related physiological outcomes.”

Over the past few years, probiotics have become increasingly popular among health-conscious consumers for their wide range of preventive and therapeutic benefits, and are now a major sector of the nutritional supplements industry. Considering that probiotics, or beneficial bacteria, support the immune and gastrointestinal (GI) systems, inhibit harmful pathogens, reduce the occurrence of allergies, and protect against a variety of chronic diseases, their popularity is not surprising. But with this rise of interest comes an ever increasing number of products on the market which range in quality from those that have been scientifically validated and tested in clinical studies, to those with unsubstantiated claims of potency and efficacy.

How do you know what you’re getting when you purchase?

In choosing a product, make sure it meets these criteria or quality standards: (1) It must be demonstrated to contain sufficiently large numbers of live, viable bacteria which are resilient enough to survive transit through the hostile environment of the GI tract and form healthy colonies; (2) It must be proven effective in providing a health benefit as demonstrated in a controlled clinical study; (3) It must be manufactured according to strict quality control and purity standards, with each batch tested for identity and potency. Of the hundreds of products on the market to choose from, one stands above the competition and meets each of these criteria: Symprove®, a high-quality, high-potency liquid product containing live active cultures of four probi-

otic strains. Let’s examine the wide-ranging benefits of probiotic supplementation and the importance of choosing a scientifically verified and clinically proven product.

Probiotics Defined

The term “probiotics” literally means “for life.” The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization and the World Health Organization define probiotics as “live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.” (1,2) Note that the organisms must be delivered live and in sufficient numbers to the gut, and that they must produce some beneficial effect(s) on the host animal or human. As we’ll see below, Symprove® was confirmed to meet both parts of the technical definition of probiotics; not all products that are labeled “probiotic” meet these standards. Probiotic bacteria are classified according to their particular genus, species, and strain. Within each genus are multiple species (for example, the genus Lactobacillus currently consists of over 125 species, such as L. acidophilus and L. rhamnosus), and within each species, different strains. Each species and strain has specific actions and uses.

ing qualities have been widely touted for centuries, as in the case of the villagers of the Caucasus Mountains whose frequent consumption of yogurt has long been associated with good health and longevity. Since the first clinical trials in the 1930’s, researchers have demonstrated the broad array of health benefits provided by probiotic supplementation. Beneficial bacteria may best be known for their role in contributing to GI health. They improve intestinal microbial balance, and enable the digestive system to function optimally. In fact, the intestinal tract is a mini-ecosystem (part of the human microbiome) - home to over a hundred trillion bacteria, from four to five hundred different species, in addition to a host of other microorganisms such as yeasts, fungi and protozoa. The key to good health is a positive balance of all of these “residents,” with sufficient numbers of beneficial bacteria performing all of

their vital roles while keeping the less desirable pathogenic microbes in check. Probiotics have been shown to be especially useful in the treatment of diarrhea resulting from antibiotic use (which can decimate intestinal bacteria, both the good and the bad), rotaviruses (in young children) and traveling. Certain probiotics, including some Lactobacilli, may relieve constipation as well as alleviate symptoms of lactose intolerance and malabsorption by producing lactase in the intestine and stomach. Probiotic bacteria have also had success in treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel diseases such as colitis and Crohn’s disease. We’ll examine in detail below a clinical study in which Symprove significantly improved IBS-related symptoms. Since the GI tract is intimately connected with the immune system, probiotics also play a role in the immune response. They inhibit

Health Benefits of Probiotics

Probiotic cultures have been used for thousands of years, originally as a means of food preservation, in cultured milk products and fermented foods. Their health-promot-

the growth of a variety of dangerous microbes (including common bacterial pathogens such as Salmonella and Shigella) and enhance immune factors. Without a healthy microbial balance in the gut, the immune system can’t function properly to ward off infection. Probiotics have been shown effective in such diverse conditions as colon cancer, where they may reduce the incidence and number of tumors, autism, urinary tract and respiratory infections, bacterial vaginosis, allergies, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. And, among other numerous roles of probiotics is the synthesis of vital nutrients such as B vitamins and Vitamin K.

Sources of Probiotics: Food vs. Supplements

So, where can you obtain these beneficial bacteria? Good sources of probiotics include cultured milk products such as yogurt and kefir and fermented foods popular in Europe and Asia, such as pickled vegetables, sauerkraut, kimchi (a traditional Korean pickled dish) and miso. But as healthy as these foods may be, it’s impossible to know just how many live, viable organisms are in the portion you’re consuming. Clinical studies indicate that an effective dose of probiotics is in the range of one to 10 billion CFU’s per day. (A CFU, or colony forming unit, is a measure of viable, live bacteria which divide to form colonies.) Daily consumption is essential - most probiotics do not permanently inhabit the intestines. Commercial yogurt manufacturers generally list on the product’s label the species of probiotic bacteria used and the “Live Active Culture” seal, but not 8

the actual number of cultures. Due to the inherent variability in manufacturing processes, it’s impossible to know exactly how many live bacteria reside in a container of yogurt (unless analyzed by a commercial lab), especially when you factor in storage and transit conditions, and shelf life. Yogurt and other cultured foods are a valuable addition to the diet, but in order to obtain the higher end of the recommended probiotic dose (10 billion CFU’s per day) to maximize health benefits, supplementation with a probiotic product is essential. But which one?

How to Choose a Product

As mentioned, there’s a plethora of probiotics on the market, in the form of liquids, tablets, powders, and capsules, and choosing one can be a daunting task, unless you can be sure it conforms to the three fundamental criteria outlined earlier. First, for a product to be effective, the bacteria it contains must be live and active, and in sufficient numbers when consumed. And the formulation must ensure that the bacteria will survive the various trips involved from the point of manufacture to your home, and then the more challenging voyage through your stomach to your colon, where they must multiply and form colonies. (We’ll refer to adequate potency and viability of the bacteria in a probiotic product as Criterion 1.) Second, the product should be evaluated for efficacy in a clinical study; i.e., it must provide a measurable health benefit(s) (Criterion 2). And third, the product must be manufactured with high quality control and purity standards (Criterion 3). You really can’t be sure what you’re getting unless the product conforms to these

quality standards.

Most Probiotics Don’t Deliver, but One Does

To provide much needed independent and comparative scientific data on the potency and quality of commercially available probiotic supplements (in other words, to address Criterion 1 on our list), scientists from the University College London School of Pharmacy conducted a study on eight commercial brands. Using test conditions that simulate the human GI tract, the researchers conducted three “challenge tests” to investigate whether the bacteria in each product (1) were present in the amounts stated on the label; (2) survived transit through the stomach; and (3) had the potential to form healthy colonies after exposure to gastric fluid. The eight probiotic brands were Actimel®, Align®, Symprove®, Biobalance®, Probio7®, Yakult®, VSL#3®, and Bio-kult®. In the first test on label claim, only liquid products (dairy-based Actimel® and Yakult® and water-based Symprove®) contained 100 percent or more of the labeled content of live bacteria. Freeze-dried, or lyophilized, products scored lower recoveries of live organisms; in these formulations, bacteria must rehydrate to return to a metabolically

active state, which often results in the loss of numbers of organisms. Liquid products, on the other hand, contain bacteria that are already in an active state and scored higher recoveries. In the second challenge test, the eight probiotic brands were submitted to simulated and porcine gastric fluids to mimic the acidic conditions of the human stomach. Most products showed a sharp decline in the number of bacteria after only five minutes in an acidic environment. Only two products contained bacteria that survived a full two hours (equivalent to stomach transit time) in gastric fluid, one (Symprove®) more robustly than the other (VSL#3®). The third challenge test evaluated whether the bacteria in each of the products could grow and multiply within 10 hours after exposure to gastric fluid, a measure of their potential to colonize in the human GI tract. Only three of the eight products showed signs of strong growth within 10 hours (Actimel®, Symprove®, VSL3®). Again, in order to be effective, a probiotic product must pass all three challenge tests: it must arrive alive (i.e. in sufficient numbers when

consumed), survive stomach acid, and then thrive, or colonize in the intestines. If a product fails just one of these tests, it will be worthless (and four products failed all three!). Symprove was the only product that passed all three challenge tests, the equivalent of Criterion 1 on our list. Symprove’s unsurpassed performance in these in vitro experiments underlies its efficacy in vivo: in a controlled clinical study, it significantly alleviated troublesome symptoms associated with IBS, satisfying Criterion 2.

Symprove Effective in Treating IBS

IBS is a GI disorder characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and bouts of diarrhea and/or constipation (not to be confused with inflammatory bowel disease). The condition is estimated to affect up to 15 percent of the population worldwide, and due to its problematic symptoms, results in reduced quality of life. Multiple factors may contribute to IBS, such as stress, depression, food sensitivities, hormonal changes, and imbalanced gut flora. Conventional treatments include drugs that are often ineffective in the long-term and laden with side effects. Because probiotics

12 WEEKS

improve intestinal microbial balance, they are a promising alternative treatment, free of side effects. In a 12-week placebo-controlled double-blind study at King’s College Hospital London, 186 patients with moderate to severe IBS received either Symprove® or a placebo, 1 ml/kg (which corresponds to approximately 68 ml for a 150-lb person or 55 ml for a 120-lb person) daily. The degree of symptoms, such as pain, constipation, diarrhea, and bloating, was measured at the beginning and end of the trial using a clinical tool known as the IBS symptoms severity score. By week 12, researchers noted a statistically significant improvement in overall symptom severity in patients who received Symprove® versus placebo. In most treated patients, pain, the predominant IBS symptom, as well as constipation and diarrhea, were reduced; by the end of the study, a quarter of these patients experienced minimal or no symptoms, an impressive outcome, especially as the patients were suffering from moderate to severe IBS. In addition, the product was well tolerated, even in these patients with pre-existing GI disturbances. (3) Bear in mind that probi-

otics are classified as foods, and so are not subject to the rigorous testing required for drugs. However, what’s noteworthy about this study, besides demonstrating Symprove’s efficacy in the human gut, is that it followed the standards equivalent of a drug trial, (i.e., the study design was randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled). Future research is underway to evaluate the efficacy of Symprove® in treating inflammatory bowel disease and diverticular disease.

What exactly is Symprove®

Symprove® is an aqueous extract of germinated barley containing live active cultures of four probiotic species: L. rhamnosus, E. faecium, L. plantarum, and L. acidophilus. Germinated barley extract acts as a substrate or prebiotic, helping the bacteria grow. Symprove’s formulation, or “Unique Delivery System,” protects and transports live probiotic bacteria safely through the stomach to the target area of the colon. Again, the bacteria in the product are live, which means actively metabolizing and dividing. The product is manufactured in a next-generation facility in the UK, in a clean-room environment to ensure high purity bacterial cultures. Each batch of Symprove® is analyzed by an independent lab to verify the identity of the bacterial formula and potency of 10 billion CFU’s per 50 ml serving (the upper recommended daily dose). These high standards for purity, identity, and potency satisfy Criterion 3.

serving can be measured in the cup provided and should be taken every morning on an empty stomach, 10 minutes before eating or drinking. Those experiencing GI symptoms are likely to see relief within four weeks, but it is recommended to use for a full 12 weeks to gain maximum benefits and rebalance gut bacteria. After 12 weeks, Symprove® may continue to be taken as part of a maintenance program.

Summary

We’ve seen that Symprove® meets the three required criteria for a superior probiotic supplement; it is a scientifically validated, clinically-proven, and quality-tested product that supports a balanced and robust population of gut flora to ensure the health of your GI system and your overall health. Clearly anyone with IBS will, after seeing the results of the British clinical study, want to try a 12-week course of Symprove for themselves. But also, for those with general GI issues and even for those without- who wish to promote optimal health, or counteract a course of antibiotics, Symprove® is the probiotic of choice.

UPDATING THE CALORIE RESTRICTION MIMETICS BY MARIOS KYRIAZIS M.D. When I first started writing about Calorie Restriction Mimetics (CRMs) 10 years ago, research in this area was at its infancy. Now however, several CRMs are well-known and relatively well-accepted agents which imitate the effects of calorie restriction itself. I highlight the fact that these compounds are not merely pills for those who are too lazy to diet, but may be used (under medical

supervision) in association with a healthy lifestyle to experience certain benefits which are generally associated with calorie restriction. It is, of course, well-known that calorie restriction can have a host of benefits and has been shown to extend lifespans in several laboratory animals. The effects of calorie restriction can be divided into: • Genetic (it regulates genes OH

Figure 1. Rapamycin and resveratrol: Putative dietary restriction mimetics. Resveratrol is a compound found in red wine that has been suggested to recapitulate some aspects of dietary restriction (DR), perhaps by activating sirtuin-family enzymes. Rapamycin is a specific inhibitor of the target of rapamycin (TOR) kinase. TOR activity is reduced by DR and inhibition of TOR is sufficient to increase life span in invertebrate organisms.

such as Sir-2, Daf-16 and p53, all of which have direct impact on age-related mechanisms). • Biochemical (positively affecting DHEA, inflammation response, nerve growth factors, and mitochondrial function, among others). • Physical (reduction of cholesterol, lipids, improvement of memory, and body weight, etc). There are many other effects of calorie restriction. If any compounds are able to mimic some of these effects, then these can be considered as CRMs. In a paper I wrote back in 2009, I suggested that if a compound can mimic at least two biochemical plus one genetic, or five biochemical/physical effects of calorie restriction, then this compound is classified as a CRM (1). There are many available CRMs used in research and the clinic. Here I will mention the latest research supporting some principal CRMs: Resveratrol The action of resveratrol in activating the SIRT family of genes is well-documented. As

a result of this action, there is an overall reduction of the risk of age-related degeneration. Calorie restriction, too, affects this family of genes, as mentioned above. In a representative experiment, scientists compared the effects of calorie restriction to the effects of resveratrol in lemurs. Both interventions reduced oxidative damage in the long term. Interestingly, both interventions increased oxidative stress in the very short term, which is an indication that both act through a hormetic effect, which means that the interventions stimulate the organism to begin the repair process by being slightly stressful. This is a typical example of how CRM and other agents can act in order to initiate the beneficial process: by causing mild damage, just enough to awaken the repair process (2). Resveratrol is an inhibitor of mTOR, and it has been used in association with rapamycin (see figure 1) where it was found to have anti-cancer effects (3). Oxaloacetate I have discussed this compound in other articles about exercise mimetics (see IAS website) and mTOR inhib-

“(Our) results demonstrate... a tractable means of introducing the health-related benefits of dietary restriction.” itors (see Aging Matters™ Magazine, issue 3 2015). However, it is worth noting that oxaloacetate increases energy production by the mitochondria, regulates fat tissue production and improves endurance. In a study in mice, administration of oxaloacetate for two weeks had an effect on mTOR, (which is implicated in aging), reduced inflammatory markers and improved brain metabolism. It also activated the insulin signalling pathway and improved formation of new neurons. Many of these characteristics are also shared by calorie restriction itself, indicating that oxaloacetate can be considered as a typical CRM (4). Oxaloacetate works by mod-

ulating several age-related genes and factors, which are also modulated by calorie restriction (5). The most important of these are the FOXO/ DAF-16 factors, and AMPA protein kinase, which is involved in energy production (see figure 2). The authors of this study concluded: “(Our) results demonstrate that supplementation of the citric acid cycle metabolite, oxaloacetate, influences a longevity pathway, and suggest a tractable means of introducing the health-related benefits of dietary restriction.” Finally, although not strictly a CRM action, it is worth mentioning the relationship between oxaloacetate and glioblastoma therapy. Calorie restriction can help in reducing the general risk of cancer,

and it seems that oxaloacetate may have this general property. It was shown that oxaloacetate may boost the effects of chemotherapy in cases of glioblastoma (a type of brain cancer). But it appears that the benefits of oxaloacetate may also be applicable in other tumours. The enzyme ATP citrate lyase helps convert citrate into oxaloacetic acid, and, through various mechanisms, reduces inflammation and lipid metabolism in cases of cancer (6). Metformin Metformin is a drug used in diabetes, but it has several other benefits. It is a receptor sensitizer (i.e. it improves the sensitivity of insulin receptors on the surface of muscle and fat cells). Importantly, metformin regulates the

Deoxyglucose This is one of the first CRMs described over 16 years ago. It inhibits glycolysis and mimics some of the effects of CR, particularly increased insulin sensitivity, reduced glucose levels, and other biochemical changes. Although using high doses of deoxyglucose can be toxic, research shows that low doses are effective, and it is still used in experiments (8). Other calorie restriction mimetics include the anti-obesity drugs Olbetam and Rimonabant, the anti-diabetes drug exenatide, the natural plant extracts called gugulipids, the compound Naloxone, and the anti-glycating compounds aminoguanidine and carnosine.

Figure 3: A comparison of control animals (in blue) and calorie restricted animals (in red), shows a general increase in lifespan during calorie restriction. Image credit: www.sciencemag.org/content/325/5937/201/F3.large.jpg

Just to show that there is a huge number of possible CRM under investigation; see this list of some of the most representative examples: • Iodoacetate • 4-phenylbutyrate (PBA) • DPP-4 inhibitors • Peptide PYY3-36 • Modulators of Neuropeptide Y • Adiponectin • Hydroxycitrate • Gymnemoside • The mTOR inhibitor Rapamycin, and related agents • Galanin antagonists • Aldifen (2,4-Dinitrophenol) • Acarbose

Conclusions It is quite clear that calorie restriction can extend health span (see figure 3). However, when it comes to pharmacological interventions, it is quite impossible for any single CRM to imitate every single benefit of calorie restriction. This means that CRMs need to be used in combination for maximum effectiveness in a wider sense. While many CRMs remain experimental, some are available for everyday clinical use, under medical supervision. Examples include; metformin, oxaloacetate, resveratrol, carnosine, aminoguanidine, Acarbose, and some of the mTOR modulators. These agents modify biochemical and physical parameters which are beneficial, overall, in reducing the impact of certain age-related conditions. However, the importance of pleasant exercise, a healthy

lifestyle and an adequate nutritional programme remain essential. This is because benefits from all these domains are integrated and become much more effective in the long term. References 1. Kyriazis M. Calorie Restriction Mimetics: examples and mode of

“This comprehensive Danish study poses a critical question: Why is heavy or extensive running bad for our health?” Lead Danish researcher, Professor Peter Schnohr of the Frederiksberg Hospital in Copenhagen, wrote; “Longterm excessive exercise may be associated with coronary artery calcification, diastolic dysfunction, and large artery wall stiffening.” (Figure one). I have measured these adverse effects with International Antiaging Systems’ (IAS) new BioCuff™, which was unfortunately not available to Prof. Schnohrol. Moreover, ‘diastolic dysfunction’ can often be corrected by balancing your hormones with Armour™ thyroid, vasopressin (Vaso-Pro™), oxytocin (Oxy-Pro™), and IAS’s newest development, aldosterone (Aldo-Spray™).

A Critical Question This comprehensive Danish study poses a critical question: Why is heavy or extensive running bad for our health? Medical research has no definitive answers to this basic question. However, I have a theory, first revealed in my 2009 book Stay 40 (2). In my book, I stated emphatically that very heavy exercise causes a cascade of free radicals eight times the norm and this cascade overwhelms all our defense systems. What I mean is that during couch-potato resting, oxygen entering our lungs is easily handled by our bodies’ lines of defense, especially our antioxidant enzymes, catalase and SOD (superoxide dis-

mutase). These two enzymes easily eliminate oxygen-generated free radicals. Indeed, our free-radical lines of defense can dismutate (render harmless) double the amount of free radicals that are generated at rest. However, when we exercise excessively--as in the case of high-mileage running--our oxygen-generated free radicals are approximately eight times those produced by couch-potato respiration. Thus, our defenses are overwhelmed and damage occurs to our cells and DNA.

sex hormones (testosterone and estradiol), as well as key upstream repair hormones such as growth hormone and IGF-1. However, in people over the age of forty, peptides and hormone deficiencies and imbalances do not promote cell and DNA repair by free radicals. This is my key thesis explained in detail in Stay 40 (2). I also propose that rapid aging is caused by the use of excessive quantities of alcohol and drugs, both legal and illegal.

In truth, for people in their teens or twenties, this radical damage is often quickly repaired by a robust hormone system containing high and balanced amounts of

cal scavengers (see figure two). Notice that although these older people have apparently benefitted from heavy exercise, as demonstrated by their improved muscle mass and definition and simultaneous loss of body fat, these benefits appear to have been achieved at the expense of rapid aging of their faces and graying of their hair! If they had taken optimum amounts of free-radical scavengers as contained in ACF228™, the effects of heavy exercise would less likely have caused age-related damage to their faces and hair. Alternatively, these people should have balanced their hormone output to reflect that of young people in their twenties and thirties. Balanced hormone output

usually means consuming daily the above-mentioned sex hormones and key upstream hormones, as well as corrective amounts of thyroid and adrenal hormones (Armour™ thyroid and hydrocortisone).

Aging and Speed I believe that heavy exercise in older people merely speeds up the process of aging. The same effect is experienced in people young-or-old who use methamphetamine. This illicit drug (‘speed’) will indeed hasten aging and physical deterioration. I have measured free radicals in intravenous speed users, using near-infrared spectroscopy, and determined that the highest levels of free-radical metabolites, namely lipid peroxides, occur when speed is injected

into the arm (2). In addition, I recommend avoiding most synthetic pharmaceutical stimulants, which, like speed, may encourage rapid aging. I believe these legal drugs should only be used in cases of emergency or dire need, because they are the fourth leading case of death in the USA. (3)

False Impressions about Diet, Exercise and Aging On February 12, 2015, the Diabetes and Endocrinology section of the Lancet published a study about a widespread misconception concerning diet, exercise and aging in the United States. Professor Christopher N. Ochner and his colleagues from Mt. Sinai Hospital, Colorado, stated that Americans wrongly believe that weight

loss can be achieved merely from diet and exercise. On the contrary, he stated, “Once obesity is established, however, body weight seems to become biologically ‘stamped in’ and defended.” He further said, “The average adult with sustained obesity has less than a 1 percent chance of re-attaining and maintaining a healthy body weight without surgery.” This ‘stamped in’ effect is largely caused by free radicals that slow our metabolism, and decreasing amounts of hormones that prevent us from efficiently burning the calories we consume.

Other Types of Stiffening As stated previously by Prof. Schnohr, excessive exercise can cause arterial stiffening.

“I found that the Russian ‘muscle’ peptide bioregulator ‘Gotratix®’ helped significantly with my muscle pain and flexibility after exercising.” During aging, another type of stiffening is the stiffening of our muscles. You may ask, “What exactly do you mean by ‘muscle stiffening’?” Allow me to pose some questions: Have you ever seen the backs of two men, aged twenty and eighty, walking away from you at a great distance— say fifty yards or more? If so, which one of them is twenty and which is eighty? Of course, the answer is that the eighty-year-old walks with a stiff gait not seen in the twenty-year-old. This difference in gait becomes increasingly apparent as a person grows older. Indeed, according to the Los Angeles Gerontology Research Group, eventually no one can walk who is over the age of 110 years (4).

Thus, avoiding walking with an increasingly stiff gait is important to everyone interested in aging and in doing something about one’s aging. I have often pondered how I could improve my gait during aging. I am faced with the hard reality of an increasingly rickety gait in my senior years until, if I live to be 110 years old, I will eventually end up in a wheelchair. Then I discovered some special peptides developed for elite Russian troops during the Cold War. I read that these special peptides are made today in Denmark by a patented extraction method. After three days of oral application, these special proteins added spring to my gait and flexibility to my ag-

ing muscles and body. I have mentioned several of these peptides previously in this article and in other articles I have written (4). Interestingly, I found that the Russian ‘muscle’ peptide bioregulator ‘Gotratix®’ helped significantly with my muscle pain and flexibility after exercising. Indeed, pain and stiffness were nearly eliminated after only three days of use. In fact, I found myself refreshed with new vigor and agility. On the negative side, I needed greater focus on the motion and coordination of my legs because I was not used to such newly realized muscle speed, balance and poise.

total of twenty days. I also took the same amount of the brain peptide ‘Cerluten®’ (5), which I believe complements Gotratix® by better coordinating the brain with the actions of the muscles. With these extensively tested Russian peptide bioregulators, I hope to avoid the rickety walk of other eighty-yearolds and perhaps avoid ending my days in a wheelchair.

I began by taking two capsules the first day and then one capsule thereafter for a

Dear Dr. Dean, Q. I recently heard a wellknown antiaging physician say that he often sees rises in cortisol levels when a man consumes pregnenolone; as I use 100mg of pregnenolone regularly I find that rather disconcerting. May I ask you what has been your experience?

As you can see from the accompanying figure 1, pregnenolone holds a premier position in the hormone cascade, and can be converted into virtually all of the steroid hormones, depending on the body’s needs (Fig. 1). The pathway has a “right side” and a “left side”. The right side includes pregnenolone > DHEA > Testosterone and the estrogens. The left side involves pregnenolone > progesterone > cortisol and progesterone >

Age Group [years] The problem is not due to pregnenolone supplementation, but to the stress. If one’s cortisol is rising (due to stress), then I recommend continuing to take pregnenolone and balancing it with additional DHEA. This can restore a normal cortisol/ DHEA balance, which will help the body to deal with the stress. Thus, it’s not the pregnenolone that’s driving the cortisol—it’s the stress. For example, in a recent study of the effect of pregnenolone on schizophrenia, doses of pregnenolone were titrated up to 500 mg/day for four weeks in 18 schizophrenics. Although treatment with pregnenolone resulted in fourfold elevation in serum levels of pregnenolone, tripled serum pregnenolone sulfate levels and increased the GABAergic neurosteroid allopregnanolone fivefold, plus DHEA-S levels by approximately 16%, treatment with pregnenolone did not increase serum testosterone, free testosterone, cortisol, DHEA, estradiol, or androstenedione levels. (1) Pregnenolone, like DHEA, 22

drops precipitously with increasing age (Fig. 2), and should be routinely supplemented. Dear Dr. Dean, I went and saw a sleep doctor and he prescribed trazodone 50 mg. It did nothing at 50 mg but at 75 mg it seemed to give me about 3 hours of sleep, in

fact it felt a lot like Benadryl®. However, I am having great difficulty in sleeping and this minimal amount is making me feel like a basket case! Can you please make a suggestion that can improve my situation? M.W., California Dear M.W., First, although I know that trazadone is commonly recommended by many physicians, I believe it is ineffective as a sleep inducer (a somnificant). I preferentially use Gabapentin (Neurontin) for insomnia. Gabapentin is an analog of GHB (gamma-hydroxy-butyrate) and shares many of GHB’s sleep-inducing benefits. For example, it enhances sleep quality, increases slow wave sleep and decreases spontaneous arousal.(1) I suspect it enhances all four phases of sleep, as does GHB. Interestingly, there has been a review of gabapentin as a sleep-inducer, compared to trazadone.(2) Patients who received gabapentin

improved significantly more than did patients who received trazodone, and gabapentin-treated patients were less likely than trazodone-treated patients to have initial insomnia and to awaken in the morning feeling tired and worn out. In my experience, gabapentin is effective for most people at a dose of 600-800 mg at bedtime. Some people are very sensitive and do well on even less; others are resistant and need higher doses (I have a few patients on 1800-2400 mg). Fortunately, gabapentin does not interact adversely with other drugs, has few adverse side effects (sleepiness is the most common) and wears off rapidly (just like GHB), usually snapping people awake in the morning, without any hangover. Another advantage is that gabapentin is not a controlled drug like GHB. Ward Dean, MD References: Lo HS, Yang CM, Lo HG, Lee CY, Ting H, Tzang BS. Can-C™ eye-drops are the formula from the original published human trials. They contain a purified and racemized form of n-acetylcarnosine (made in Japan); this natural di-peptide has potent anti-glycating and antioxidant properties that prevents lipid peroxidation. Note that the formula is important- it’s not all about the n-acetylcarnosine; the specific carrier agents and their purity are also important. If you look at the Can-C™ formula you will see differences to the copycats, (remember it is only Can-C™ that is patented in recognition of the original work). If you want the best possible results in the fastest possible time, then choose Can-C™ to deliver them according to the clinical trials.

Patients placed two-drops of Can-C™ into their eyes twice daily for a 6-month period, the outcome was:

• 90% saw an improvement

in their visual acuity. • 88.9% of patients showed improvement in the clarity of their lens. There have been numerous reports of cataract shrinkage and even disappearance with documented evidence that Can-C™ eye-drops remain effective (and safe) more than 24-months later. The most commonly expressed initial reports are that glare is significantly improved, (for example night driving is much safer) and color perception is enhanced.

• Cataracts (particularly the senile version) • Glaucoma • Presbyopia • Corneal disorders • Eye strain • Ocular inflammation • Blurred vision • Vitreous opacities and lesions • Diabetes mellitus complications • Contact lens users • Dry eye syndrome Of special interest may be to persons who wear contact lenses. This is because Can-C™ inhibits the accumulation of lactic acid and therefore contacts can be worn for longer periods without pain.

Before:

We have also received reports that Can-C™ not only aids dry-eye syndrome with its lubricants, but that Can-C™ helps to unclog proteins from the lacrimal ducts, thus releasing more natural tears onto the eye. In a similar way, it is also believed that the unclogging of proteins in the eye’s drain, (the Schlemm valve), helps to reduce intraocular pressure and thus aids glaucoma.

SPOTLIGHT: GHRPS A R E AL ‘OR AL’ ALTER NATIVE TO G H INJEC TION S Ever since Dr. Rudman’s work in the 1980s and then the release of Dr. Klatz’s book ‘grow young with HGH’ in the 1990s, there has been a strong interest in the use of growth hormone (GH) in antiaging medicine. Dr. Rudman’s research concluded that after injecting his elderly patients with GH, many of them had reversals of their biological age markers by as much as 20-years; specifically having noted improved skin, hair, muscle mass, decreased fat levels and enhanced levels of stamina, strength and well-being. It’s not entirely surprising given the multi-faceted role of growth hormone, plus as its name suggests it is involved in the growth and repair of tissues, but unfortunately blood levels of it decline dramatically past the age of 35 (see figure 1), despite the fact that there is evidence that the pituitary gland continues making significant amounts of it.

GH injections

The issue with injecting GH, (brand names include Genotropin®, Saizen® and Zomacton®), other than its expense, is that it does have to be injected to be effective, this is because as a 191 chain amino-acid it simply can’t be absorbed via any other route, thus daily injections can become a chore. Furthermore, many countries have decided that GH injections be classified as a controlled substance, partly because of its anabolic actions. Controlled substances often require special import and export licenses; this is overand-above the requirement for a prescription. Furthermore, the research of Dr. Richard Walker has highlighted that bolus injections of GH are not

26

bioidentical and that as they induce spikes of GH into the blood they could end up damaging the pituitary gland, leading to a down-regulation of its own production of GH, or even to stop GH production altogether.

GHRPs

But meanwhile, Dr. Walker’s research has shown that the use of GHRPs, (growth hormone releasing peptides) have a much safer profi le whilst enjoying the same benefitseven if they provide them a little more slowly. We would recommend that you read his extensive article in the Aging Matters™ magazine, No3, 2014 to understand fully how they operate. What we can say is that GHRPs, (GHRP2, GHRP6 and sermorelin) have the following benefits: • They can be sublingually, intra-nasally and even orally, passing into blood and thus avoiding the need for needles. • Their feedback loop means that they cannot cause the pituitary to down-regulate. • GHRPs are not controlled substances. • Rather than inducing a spike of GH in the blood, GHRPs augment (improve) each release of GH naturally into the blood, for which there are several peaks daily, (although the rising from bed peak is the highest one) - see figure 2.

Synergy

Sermorelin is actually the precursor to GH, being the first 29 amino acids and is

applied via the sublingual route. Sermorelin’s function may be to release existing stores of GH from the pituitary- rather than encourage more production as a pure agonist would. Dr. Walker has highlighted that combining sermorelin with GHRP2 or GHRP6 has a highly synergistic effect, in some cases eliciting up to a 5x greater quantity of GH into blood, an action that can be equivocated to using injectable GH itself. Note: You can also hear Dr. Walker discuss this with us on the IAS video page.

Differences

There is no definitive answer yet as to the specific differences between GHRP2 and GHRP6; our own experiences, including information received from physicians and patients who use these products suggests the following: • GHRP6 may induce more hunger feelings than GHRP2 and could improve levels of IGF-1 more. Therefore this option may be better recommend for those Figure 1 (top): The typical GH levels in blood with age, note that ‘geriatric’ levels are reached as early as during the 30’s. Figure 2 (middle) shows the 24 hour profile of subcutaneous (and also intravenous) GH. Compare that to figure 3 (bottom), the natural peaks of GH in both young and elderly patients. Only GHRPs naturally amplify these bioidentical patterns.

who want to put on muscle mass. • GHRP2 may create less hunger feelings and therefore could be preferable to those who want to stimulate GH for fat loss. Also as the GHRP6 (Releasing-Pro™) is a nasal spray, those who don’t like that feeling may prefer GHRP2-Pro™ since it is an oral liquid simply swallowed.

Summary

GHRPs have created a genuine efficacious alternative; they are simpler/ easier to use and at the same time they have a better/ safer profi le than injectable GH.

SPOTLIGHT: THYROID SUPPORT FOR THE HYPOTHYROID EPIDEMIC Dr. Broda Barnes in the 1970s estimated that 40% of the adult population was deficient in thyroid hormones; he published this statement in his excellent book‘hypothyroidism, the unsuspected epidemic.’ Since then, pupils of Dr. Barnes, such as Dr. Richard Wilkinson, have suggested that this figure could be even greater now! This is important because the thyroid gland is of pivotal importance to our overall health, but like the majority of hormones as we age the production of thyroid hormones decline. This lack of thyroid function is the root cause of a wide variety of agerelated health disorders. Ergo, supplementation with a synthetic or a natural thyroid can have a significant positive effect on a wide range of age-related problems.

The importance of the thyroid gland The hormones produced by the thyroid control the body’s metabolism- the rate at which it burns calories for energy. It also controls the body’s utilization of fat, so a decline in the secretion of hormones from the thyroid gland, (known as hypothyroidism) can result in wide range of symptoms such as poor concentration, confusion, memory problems, cold hands and feet and weight gain. Another serious condition which can be caused by and result from an underactive thyroid are painful musculoskeletal issues that affect tendons, muscles and ligaments.

How can I be sure if I need a thyroid supplement? Above: The position of the thyroid gland

thyroid checked, but another, simpler method is to take your body temperature when you wake in the morning. It should be in the range of 97.8 to 98.2 degrees Fahrenheit, if it is regularly lower you could be hypothyroid and if higher then hyper-thyroid.

Choosing between synthetic and natural thyroid supplements IAS stocks a comprehensive range of both synthetic and natural thyroids, although we advocate the use of a natural supplement over a synthetic, this is because products such as Armour® are of a porcine origin, so they naturally contain the full spectrum of T1, T2, T3 and T4 thyroid hormones, (note the bottles only list the amounts of T3 and T4 because very few physicians are familiar with T1 and T2).

Thyroid doses Natural desiccated thyroids are measured in grains; with one grain being equivalent to approximately 60 mg. IAS carries doses from ¼ grain to 2 grains, with brands including Armour®, ERFA® and Nature®. IAS also provides synthetic T3 in 20 mcg and T4 in 100 mcg tablets.

Thyroid supplements provide potent antiaging protection Many aging individual can benefit from taking a thyroid supplement because this remarkable hormone has such a profound affect across so many different conditions. Many antiaging physicians consider thyroid support an essential part of any serious attempt to improve a person’s healthspan and longevity.

Apart from recognising the types of effects listed above, your doctor can of course get your blood levels of

Conversion between synthetic and natural thyroid products The table provided is a helpful guide to what the suggested conversion rates are for those wishing to make the switch between synthetic thyroids and natural versions. S U PPLYING AND BAL ANCING OMEGA S NATU R ALLY Most people are familiar with the benefits of omega oils for their health and in particular to reduce inflammation. Indeed cod-liver oil supplements are the world’s most popular supplement, but recently Professor Brian Peskin’s research which is all contained in his new book – the PEO solution - is causing quite a stir and may make many folks to rethink and change their stance. We fully appreciate that a change in direction/ thinking often takes time to get used to.

Professor Brian Peskin and the cover of his latest book - the PEO solution

What are we talking about? We are referring to his discovery that the body naturally uses plant oils to make its own omega 3 and 6, thereby satisfying a precise balance according to needproviding the ‘raw materials’ are available. Professor Peskin has termed the phrase PEO as the acronym for ‘parent essential oils.’ Professor Peskin states openly that he has found this information hidden in the scientific literature and never once found it referred to in the medical literature. Why does it matter? Because as he says, it means that physicians are unaware of these facts and therefore they continue to advocate super-physiological doses of omegas from fish oil, which may be actually doing

more harm than good! It’s a lot to swallow, (no pun intended) and we can’t do his research justice on a single page, which is why we recommend his book, or take a look at the Aging Matters™ magazine No1, 2015 in which Professor Peskin’s article is the lead story. But right now, let’s highlight some of the advantages of the PEO source for omega 3 and 6: • The plant oils live in our environment, (typically around 50-60°F); hence they do not go rancid at room temperature. Cold water fish live in a cold environment (typically around 30-40°F), therefore PEOs represent a much more stable product being unlikely to ‘go off ’ and become rancid and hence pro-inflammatory. • The PEOs are obviously a nonanimal source and therefore can be considered more suitable for those wanting to avoid animal sourced/ based products. • The PEOs represent a sustainable source, since there is already too much ‘pressure’ on the seas to provide both fish and even krill stocks.

How is fish oil made? It often does not start as the healthiest possible source!

28

• The PEOs enable the body to produce its own internal essential fatty acids (EFAs) and correct its own balance. This has not been shown to be the case with fish oil supplements.

Why not fish oil?

SPOTLIGHT: CENTROPHENOXINE S MART DRUGS AND N UTRIENTS Centrophenoxine improves ‘recall speed’ Centrophenoxine, (pronounced, cent-rowfen-ox-in) is a classic ‘smart drug’ and features prominently in Dr. Ward Dean’s series of books on the subject. The term ‘smart drugs’ has become synonymous with substances that aid memory and cognition, although the correct medical terminology is ‘nootropics’ (which when translated from the Greek is‘towards the mind’).

for all senile dementia medications, since trying to revert the damage of a mid-late stage dementia is very difficult. The target therefore is at the earliest stage of dementia, or even before then, at the antiaging stage, wherein smartdrugs like centrophenoxine can improve/ enhance and protect the performance of an aging, but otherwise recognised as a healthy, individual.

Lipofuscin Professor Imre Zs.-Nagy says; “Centrophenoxine has shown many facets to improve conditions related to my membrane hypothesis of aging. For example, its ability to improve brain performance, survival time in animal experiments and to remove the cell-aging pigment called lipofuscin. It has been my antiaging supplement for more than 30-years.”

Background As shown in the insert, centrophenoxine is an ester of PCPA (a plant compound) and DMAE which is a natural cholinebased substance found in the diet, particularly in some kinds of fishwhich may be the reason why some believe that eating fish is “good for the brain.” Centrophenoxine has been studied extensively over many decades, principally in Europe and one of its leading proponents is the Gerontology expert, Professor Imre Zs.-Nagy, whom utilises it for his own antiaging purposes, keeping his mind sharp. One of the actions of centrophenoxine is to improve acetylcholine levels in the brain and it is this neurotransmitter that declines in Alzheimer’s diseaseleading to its devastating effects. Yet, centrophenoxine doesn’t make significant improvements for Alzheimer patients in this way, (note, there is another important action mentioned later on), although the same could be said

Lipofuscin is a waste material that accumulates in aging cells, especially those in the brain, heart, lungs and skin; indeed, in skin cells, lipofuscin can form part of the pigmented spots that are often referred to as ‘age’ or ‘liver’ spots. Lipofuscin accumulation can be very troublesome for the cell because it inhibits proper functioning from taking place, reducing the transference of chemicals through the cell wall, thus damaging both messaging and detoxification abilities. Indeed this inhibition and the inherent loss of lipidity that accompanies it, forms a significant part of Professor Zs.-Nagy’s ‘membrane hypothesis of aging.’ What we do know, is that when significant amounts of lipofuscin are present in the brain, they are then referred to as ‘plagues’ and then become recognised trait of Alzheimer’s. Perhaps it is therefore centrophenoxine’s primary mode of action to help remove lipofuscin deposits. It does it so well, that it is currently believed to be the best tool commercially available to do so and so well, that in patients with visible ‘age’ or ‘liver’ spots in the skin; it is possible over several weeks of centrophenoxine supplementation to see them fade or even disappear. Such patients can also benefit from the knowledge, that at the same, lipofuscin deposits are being reduced in their heart, lungs and brain etc.

General cognitive benefits Classifying the precise benefits of the various smart-drugs can be tricky. Most individuals often simply refer to their ailing cognitive facilities as “memory loss.” However, a quick breakdown of that statement requires further evaluation in order to determine the precise nature of the problem: • When you say “memory loss,” which of the following is it mainly related to? o Short term memory, (minutes or hours passing), example; “where are my car keys again?” o Medium term memory, (days or weeks), example; “what’s the name of our favorite Sunday lunch restaurant?” o Long term memory (months or years), example; “where did we holiday last year?” • Do you get bored easily and does your mind wander aimlessly? • Do you lack focus and attention? • Does your mind ‘fade’ quickly with any workload and you quickly become tired? • Is it actually remembering already learned experiences/ memories, (which is memory per-se), or is the problem in remembering not-yet learned experiences to recall well later on? (Referred to as memoryimprinting). • Is the problem not in the detail of recalling the memory, but in the time it takes to recall it? So over the years, we’ve come to classify the different smart-drugs and nutrients that we have, to establish which of the above the supplement in question is best suited to. Thus, in the case of centrophenoxine it is the last one. If your speech appears to be

OCH2

Cl

A

PCPA

full of “ums” and “ers” - whilst your brain tries to catch up with your mouth, then it is likely that centrophenoxine will be an aid for you. In our experience, centrophenoxine should not only be considered for those concerned with the development of Alzheimer’s, but when utilized correctly it can help many people, especially those aged over 40, to hasten their recall speed, bringing clarity and order to both speech and thought.

Doses

It is of course impossible to list all details of centrophenoxine use onto one page, but interested parties should ask for further details and read the articles with references that are available on the IAS website. A typical dose for the ‘average’ person is 250 mg once or twice daily; higher doses are necessary according to the varying degrees of Alzheimer’s. Note: Centrophenoxine is synergistic with other smart-drugs, in particular choline based forms such as piracetam (Nootropil®); these additional benefits can be experienced by using them concurrently, although naturally both doses need to be adjusted downward to suit.

Supplement facts:

Description: MZS is Dr. Walter Pierpaoli’s original melatonin formula containing the additional and supportive agents zinc and selenium. MZS is produced to pharmaceutical standards in Italy and unlike other melatonin preparations MZS has been designed to produce a night peak of melatonin between 1AM and 3AM to mimic the natural behavior of the pineal gland. Dr. Pierpaoli’s extensive animal and human research has shown that this is important because this action helps to stabilize circadian rhythms, improve hormonal cyclicity and boost immunity.

Our melatonin has been formulated by the world’s foremost melatonin expert Dr. Walter Pierpaoli, his Melatonin Zn Se, or MZS™, is totally unique since it is designed to mimic the natural night peak of melatonin- to leave you feeling refreshed and alert the following day.

What does Melatonin do? Melatonin is vital to protect our hormonal system, regulate immunity and repair our body’s cells. It is commonly used by shift workers and also to treat jet lag and age related sleep disorders, but its abilities go far beyond simply its sleep inducing properties.

The antioxidant effects of melatonin Melatonin is an extremely effective antioxidant; in fact on a molecule to molecule basis; melatonin has proved to be significantly more efficient in neutralizing toxic

hydroxyl-radicals than the two well-known free radical scavengers, glutathione and mannitol.

many showed reversal of their ARMD. Remarkably this was true for both the wet and dry forms!

Melatonin’s effects on longevity

Why is Dr. Pierpaoli’s MZS™ more effective than other melatonin supplements?

Melatonin’s effect on longevity is well documented; in fact laboratory tests on rats and mice have demonstrated that melatonin increased their lifespans by 20%. Experts believe melatonin is a vital antiaging product because of its positive effect on aging. MZS™ and age-related macular degeneration Age related macular degeneration (ARMD) comes in two forms, wet and dry and is a notoriously difficult disorder to treat and is linked to blindness. A 24-month study, (published in NY Academy of Science, 2005, 1057:384-392) on 100 patients showed that after 3 months, the majority of patients taking 3 mg of Melatonin Zn Se nightly had halted the progression of their age related macular degeneration and at 6 months

There are three principal reasons, firstly it is of pharmaceutical quality at a dose of 3 mg, secondly it contains the synergistic ingredients of selenium and zinc, but thirdly and most importantly- it is designed to release at a very specific time. Dr. Pierpaoli’s research led him to perfect a formula that exactly mimics the pineal gland’s release of melatonin. Thus means that MZS™ is the only melatonin supplement to follow nature’s own night peak.

ENHANCING AND IMPROVING STEM - CELL AC TIVIT Y Stem Cell Worx® is an intraoral spray that contains a very high-grade bovine colostrum, (with over 30% of the antibody IgG and over 54% protein) along with a 98% pure trans-resveratrol and 95% fucoidan (a seaweed extract). stem cells that come from an embryo. The Stem Cell Worx® supplement is designed specifically to enhance one’s own adult stem cells naturally. Stem Cell Worx® is an intraoral spray providing an absorption rate of up to 95% of its nutrients. This is important because in order for adult stem cells to be stimulated, it is the blood that is the principal carrier of nutrients and oxygen to our cells. In order to enhance cell activation you need three key factors, which are: • Growth factors • Immune factors and • Cytokines Stem Cell Worx® has all three of these factors in abundance and it is scientifically proven they are most effective when administered by intraoral spray delivery. Time takes its toll on adult stem cells. At 65 years of age, the release rate of adult stem cells entering the bloodstream has dropped by 80% compared to youth. It is important to keep them activated. The good news is it is now possible to reverse

It is a natural health supplement designed to activate the body’s own adult stem-cells in order to provide a robust immunity. With 50 to 70 trillion cells in the body, cellular health is clearly crucial to overall well-being and good health. Hence, adult stem cells working at optimal levels provide the platform for many cumulative health benefits. Unfortunately, as we age, our own adult stem cells decline rapidly, along with their release rates from the bone marrow, and our immune system weakens. Whilst stem cell clinics are at the forefront of antiaging medicine today, the process of full adult stem cell therapy is very expensive and due to regulatory restrictions results in long distance travel for many. Adult stem cells are the master cells of the body that have the ability to maintain, selfrenew and repair cells, tissue and muscle throughout an entire life-time. These cells are referred to as autologous, haematopoietic (blood), mesenchymal or stromal stem cells. Adult stem cells must not be confused with embryonic

THE PEP TIDE B IOR EG U L ATOR S FOR S KIN Those who are already familiar with the work of Professor Vladimir Khavinson from the St. Petersburg Biogerontology Institute in Russia, will know how remarkable his work has been in the discovery of short-chain peptide bioregulators- that act as highly specific gene switches. Now, four of these peptide bioregulators have been combined into topical skin preparations so that their performance can be bought to the field of aesthetic medicine; specifically the peptides in use are those from: • Cartilage • Blood vessels • Thymus gland • Pineal gland

What does each peptide provide for? The beauty product line Youth Gems® contains the listed peptides and a ginseng extract called Neovitin®. They represent the very latest developed program of complex skin care designed for the face, neck, hands and the body. The line includes four unique active ingredients of short-chain peptides that have a directed tissue-specific action to improve all basic skin structures: • The thymus gland peptide stimulates tissue regeneration and the synthesis of tissuespecific proteins. Thus, cells proliferative and metabolic activity is enhancedaccelerating the renewal of various cell tissues. It also has an anti-inflammatory action, improving the healing time of wounds, as well as antioxidant, immune stimulating and antistress actions. • The pineal gland peptide regulates metabolic processes and increases protein synthesis in skin cells. It also possesses potent antioxidant activity, normalizes the lipid peroxidation processes in skin cells that in turn promotes the elimination of negative

influences on the skin from external factors. • The cartilaginous tissue peptide stimulates regeneration of fibroblasts and keratinocytes and interferes with the destructive changes in collagen skin structure; it also strengthens collagen structure of elastic skin fibers and increases elasticity. • The vessel peptide regulates metabolic processes in the vascular wall, normalizes vascular tone and restores disturbed skin microcirculation. It strengthens and regulates the permeability of the vascular walls of skin vessels and improves skin turgor.

What else is included in Youth Gems® in addition to the four peptides? In addition to the four peptides, the Youth Gems® also contain an incredible array of beneficial natural agents- which just by themselves would make other antiaging creams jealous! The range includes: Neovitin® (a complex isolated from ginseng), olive oil, raisin-seed oil, Argon oil, Soya oil, Jojoba oil, Bisabolol (extract from chamomile), Peony extract,

sodium hyaluronate (a derivative of hyaluronic acid), green tea extract, cocoa oil, carrageenan (from seaweed), winter bloom, almond extract and vitamin E.

What results have been seen? Clinical trials and examinations have been conducted at the St. Petersburg Biogerontology Institute and they have concluded that these short chain peptides, when applied to skin cells, have many beneficial activities, shown below are some of those results. These include improved metabolism in vascular wall cells, the growth of new skin cells, enhanced antioxidant activity; increased blood flow circulation and greater moisturization. The skin’s appearance becomes smoother, with fewer wrinkles and with more elasticity, all of which helps to lift the face contours producing a more radiant, youthful appearance. These beneficial effects were noted in 100% of women who took part in the voluntary clinical trial.

What’s available? • Body milk: The body milk is a very light cream that can be applied to most areas of the body. • Day cream: The day cream is the core product designed to be applied to the face and hands. • Serum: The serum is designed to be used sparingly against the most noticeable skin aging effects on the face and neck. • Tonic: This cleanser can be used to help any area become more firm and taught and may be splashed on as required. All of the Youth Gems® should be applied onto clean, dry skinavoiding the eyes; makeup can be applied after absorption - if required.

Right: A 68 year old female before (left) and after (right) application of Youth Gems®

SPOTLIGHT: PEPTIDE BIOREGULATORS THE DI SCOVERY OF G ENE SWITCHES IN FOOD Today Professor Vladimir Khavinson is the President of the European Academy of Gerontology and Geriatrics, but in the 1980’s he was a Colonel in the Soviet Union military medical corps. At the time, he and his team were approached by Kremlin officials, they wanted them to find a way to protect their troops from a myriad of problems; issues such as radiation for submariners in nuclear submarines to troops that may be blinded from known, (but thankfully unused) new weapons such as battlefield lasers.

A former Soviet military secret! What their research uncovered - that was used for two decades on many thousands of men and women - was a remarkable link between short chain peptides and DNA. This former military secret is now available to the public as peptide bioregulators. Their published research has identified that each organ / gland / tissue uses a highly specific short chain peptide, obtained from food, to act as a ‘short-cut’ to initiate protein synthesis. These peptides, unlike proteins, can enter the blood through the stomach. Through a comprehensive list of patents and even copyrighted PowerPoint slides, the Russian research group have shown that each of the concentrated

Above: A short-chain peptide bioregulator interacting with DNA

peptide bioregulators so far examined, interact with particular strands of DNA - effectively and very specifically activating repair and regenerative processes. This is a remarkable story since what we are describing here are peptides that act as individualised gene switches. To date, they have been tested for many years on thousands of individuals, without report of any serious side effects or contraindications. We believe that they could be set to ‘out do’ stem cells. Why? Because this peptide therapy is relatively cheap, highly specific, can be taken orally and doesn’t require any suppression of the immune system to operate fully (as stem cells do).

Original material from the trials The peptide bioregulators available via IAS are the bovine originals; sourced from carefully chosen Danish calves and processed through pharmaceutical processes and filters. They are not the synthetic versions which have not been studied/ proven. Peptide bioregulators act as they sound- to regulate; for example, Thyreogen®

the thyroid peptide would increase thyroid activity if it were too low, but decrease it if it were too high!

Dosing Doses are very dependent upon the need and unlike hormones these peptides do not have to be taken every day, hence making them a cost effective regime. A typical/ average use could be considered as follows:

• Start with an intensive course: 2 capsules once a day for 30-days. • Thereafter use 2 capsules once a day for 10-days, repeat every 2, 3, 4 or even as little as 6-months. The story of the peptide bioregulators is a remarkable one and we recommend that you to read the articles and interviews and see the video on the IAS website.

SPOTLIGHT: BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES OX Y TOCIN FOR PA SS ION AND S E X IAS carries a wide range of bioidentical hormones - a term that means ‘natural to and in the body’. In this featured section we are focusing on oxytocin. What is oxytocin? Oxytocin is a hormone produced by the hypothalamus, but excreted via the pituitary gland. Its orthodox medicine role is to help women give birth, since the large dose that’s injected helps relaxes the uterus and alleviates the passage of the child into the world for the mother.

Above: Dr. Thierry Hertoghe

However, as we will discover and as been highlighted by Dr. Thierry Hertoghe’s book; ‘passion, sex and longevity, the oxytocin adventure’ -it has many other roles to play too.

The love hormone Oxytocin has been dubbed ‘the love hormone’, why would this be? Principally because oxytocin can induce feelings of bonding and care and not just between

individuals, but even with animals too! Oxytocin measurements have been taken between lovers, friends, relatives, parents and their children etc. From those results, it has been noted that oxytocin levels are higher when they are in their presence. Mothers naturally bond with their children, but even men, (especially those who experience the live birth), express their emotions as wanting to care and protect their offspring, these effects may be attributable to the release of oxytocin hence triggering the bond. On the other side of the coin, psychopaths are notoriously low in their oxytocin levels, which may be a cause of their uncaring feelings towards other humans.

The pain and orgasm connection Fibromyalgia can be a very debilitating disorder with a lot of pain, sometimes constant for those who suffer with it. In women it was noted that when they were experiencing an orgasm they felt no pain at all. Later, it transpired that women

undergo a burst of oxytocin during orgasm. Trials were undertaken to see if oxytocin supplementation could alleviate the pain of fibromyalgia, there was some success, but the side-effect noted was that those women now enjoyed multiple orgasms! This was a fact picked up on by the popular press and is probably singularly the action most responsible for bringing oxytocin into the public gaze.

Synergy Dr. Hertoghe has explained that some folks will not feel the effects of oxytocin. This is principally because of two reasons, (if we consider that the dose is correct for that individual). Firstly, that some people are ‘low’ in their own principal sex-hormone, so if a man is low testosterone, or if a woman is low estrogen, it is possible that oxytocin will not elicit its full potential in those persons. The other issue could be low vasopressin; vasopressin

Dosing As might be expected doses are very dependent upon its use. However for social or sexual enhancement, one can consider 5 IU to 10 IU a ‘typical’ dose. In fact, Dr. Hertoghe has somewhat reduced the doses that he recommends in his book, (transmitted via personal conversation to me). Currently IAS is providing Oxy-Sub™ in 20 IU trouches (a soft sublingual tablet), these can therefore be cut into half or quarter for a dose of 5 or 10 IU and should be placed under the tongue and allowed to melt. The other option is Oxy-Pro™ which is applied intranasally delivering 10 IU per spray.

Dr. Thierry Hertoghe’s book, “Passion, sex and longevity - the oxytocin adventure”, details its roles and uses in a ‘how to’ guide form.

“...oxytocin can induce feelings of bonding and care and not just between individuals, but even with animals too!” 34

is a counterpart to oxytocin, produced and released via the same glands. In cases of vasopressin deficiency, the patient may enhance the oxytocin experience by adding one or two sprays (10 IU each) of vasopressin via the Vaso-Pro™ nasal spray.
