For about a century, at least a few people have understood that the diseases and disabilities of old age cannot realistically be alleviated – not much, anyway – by the kind of medicine that works against infections, nor even by putative genetic manipulations that might be available to address congenital conditions. That is where the field of biogerontology came from, and it remains its raison d’etre, even though most biogerontologists (at least until recently) have focused on descriptive and mechanistic studies to elucidate the nature of aging rather than to manipulate it. There are two main reason why it is so: first, age-related ill-health is a side effect of essential metabolic processes than progressively damage the body, meaning that any therapy targeting the pathological consequences of that damage will necessarily become less and less effective as the damage further accumulates, and second, the pathologies of old age are hugely many and varied (and they interact with each other), so tackling them one by one is simply impractical.
that quest is extremely likely to bear fruit quite soon, we would also be unjustified in restricting our efforts to that line of research. That is what led me, 15 years ago or so, to seek alternatives that might also have merit. The strategy that I came up with, since known as SENS (“strategies for engineered negligible senescence”), can best be described as intermediate between the above approach and the “one disease at a time” geriatric medicine option. Like knobtwiddling, it is preventative, in the sense of being designed mainly for use by people who are not yet sick. But like geriatrics, it is a treatment that restores a more youthful body composition and thus function than the recipient had prior to treatment, rather than just slowing down their decline. In a nutshell, SENS is about repairing the accumulating damage that leads to age-related ill-health, thus breaking the link between metabolism (which creates that damage) and pathology (which results from the damage).
Some biogerontologists have expressed doubts about the feasibility of SENS. accumulation of molecular “garbage” consisting of metabolic byproducts that the body has no mechanism to destroy or excrete), and asserts that within each category there is a generic therapy (such as stem cell transplantation, or introduction of new catabolic enzymes found elsewhere in nature) that can reasonably be expected to work for all examples of damage within that category. By “generic” I mean that even though the therapy will certainly differ in detail (just what stem cells, or what enzymes) from one type of damage to another, the essence of the method will not. This means that the inherent complexity of SENS is far lower than for geriatric medicine; developing a new therapy for a new type of damage will be much more straightforward if it can be done by just modifying the details of something that has already been developed.

Because the most fundamental obstacle to the efficacy of any combination therapy is the multiplicity of interactions of its components with each other, and the most fundamental obstacle to the efficacy of any therapy is the side effects arising from the good things that its target is doing at the same time as doing bad things, such as the fact that statins reduce cholesterol (a vital molecule) as well as reducing oxysterols (the actual problem), or that reducing free radical levels (as dietary antioxidants are designed to do) diminishes their signaling function as well as their toxicity. In the case of SENS, the targets are not doing anything while they are at sub-pathogenic levels, so these challenges are hugely reduced.

While this is of course only a circumstantial argument, and SENS Research Foundation is indeed funding work to identify other damage, it is becoming hard to deny that this sevenpoint classification is standing the test of time. Putting all this together, I believe that there is now a decisive case for pursuing the “knob-twiddling” and SENS approaches in tandem if we are seeking to save the most lives and alleviate the most suffering in the long term. The above considerations certainly do not add up to the conclusion that SENS is easy, and I think it is highly likely that we will identify and implement the best possible knob-twiddling options well before we implement SENS. However, if we objectively evaluate the risk that those best options will only deliver a modest postponement of aging, especially for those who are already in middle age when they are developed (which is not the case for “rejuvenation” options such as SENS), and if we further evaluate the difficulty of developing each of the SENS components and (via the above arguments) what this says for the likely timeframe for making the whole of SENS work, it is in my view inescapeable that we must pursue both alternatives as aggressively as possible.

50 Years of Life Enhancement and Life Extension

When the drug called deprenyl was first developed in the early 1960’s, the Hungarian doctor who synthesized it could hardly have foreseen its widespread therapeutic potential. Over the past half century, deprenyl has gained recognition not only as a clinically proven antidepressant and Parkinson’s treatment, but also as a mental energizer, physical and cognitive performance booster, generalized mood-lifter, sex enhancer, brain protector, and longevity tonic. The age-retarding and performance-enhancing effects of deprenyl have been clearly demonstrated in animal studies, and humans can benefit from these intriguing findings. The drug is not just beneficial in cases of neurodegenerative diseases; the general healthy but aging population can employ low-dose deprenyl to improve quality of life in their middle to late years, fend off physiological and cognitive decline, boost physical, sexual, and mental vigor, and promote longevity. Deprenyl Preserves the Essential Neurotransmitter Dopamine Deprenyl (also known by trade names Selegiline, Jumex, and Eldepryl) exhibits a wide spectrum of pharmacological activity. The first one, for which it is most well-known, is inhibition of an enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters such as dopamine. (1-5) Let’s take a quick look at the operation of the brain’s circuitry, which depends on the continuous regulation of neurotransmitter levels. In a healthy brain, this achieved by a fine balance between neurotransmitter manufacture from amino acids and breakdown by enzymes. Any disruption of either neurotransmitter synthesis or degradation (or both) can upset the brain’s delicate equilibrium, resulting in mood, psychiatric, or neurological disorders. Here we’re focused on neurotransmitter breakdown, specifically by MAO-B, a member of the monoamine oxidase family of enzymes that degrades dopamine (as well as other brain chemicals such as phenylethylamine (PEA)). Enzymatic degradation is a biochemical pathway necessary for the elimination of used neurotransmitters. MAO-B is essential to brain metabolism, but if its over-activity exceeds the rate of dopamine synthesis, the brain’s dopamine stores become depleted, with disastrous consequences. That’s

where deprenyl comes to the rescue: by blocking MAO-B, it prevents the breakdown of dopamine, replenishing the neurotransmitter’s levels in the brain – the crucial mechanism that underlies deprenyl’s success in treating depression and neurodegenerative diseases. Dopamine is central to movement, coordination, sex drive, and cognition, and its production is hindered in these diseases, and also, as we’ll see below, as a consequence of aging.
Deprenyl Treats Depression and Neurodegenerative Diseases by Blocking MAO-B MAO-B inhibitors were among the first antidepressants before the advent of tricyclics, SSRI’s, and other newer generation drugs, but their use was limited due to the “cheese” effect, a hypertensive reaction brought on by ingestion of foods rich in tyramine, a natural substance found in aged cheeses, cured meats, and other foods. Deprenyl was the first MAO-B inhibitor shown to effectively treat depression without the danger of elevated blood pressure or other side effects. (6-10) Recently, the drug was approved in a transdermal patch formulation (Emsam) for the treatment of major depressive disorder. (6,11) MAO-B inhibition is also key to deprenyl’s use in Parkinson’s, a disease characterized by a dramatic decline in brain dopamine due to the destruction of dopamineproducing neurons in the substantia nigra region of the brain. Symptoms include impaired cognition, tremors, rigid muscles, loss of coordination, progressive disability, and shortened lifespan. Clinical studies beginning in the 1980’s suggesting that deprenyl slows disease progression in early Parkinson’s disease (12,13) led to its FDA approval in 1989. In advanced cases, deprenyl is often used as an adjunct treatment to L-dopa, another Parkinson’s treatment, but one riddled with serious side effects. (14) Besides its dopaminepotentiating capacity, deprenyl has a protective effect on dopaminergic neurons, as we’ll see below, and delays the need for L-dopa therapy if initiated early in the progression of the disease. (2) Many physicians report that their Parkinson’s patients taking deprenyl demonstrate physical improvements, enhanced memory and concentration, and increased life expectancy.
more far-reaching: it can also benefit the healthy but aging population by countering the increase in MAO-B activity and resulting dopamine deficits that go hand in hand with growing older. After age 45, the brain’s dopaminergic neurons age rapidly, causing a decline in dopamine levels of 13% per decade. (17) A drop in brain dopamine to 30% of the normal level leads to Parkinson’s, and a plummet to 10% results in death. (17) But levels don’t have to drop precipitously to upset normal functioning − just a modest dip in dopamine as a result of aging can produce lowered sex drive, impaired cognitive function, or loss of coordination. Obviously, we want to keep the dopaminergic system functioning optimally as we age by keeping rising MAO-B levels and falling dopamine production in check, and thankfully this is possible. We’ll see below how to use low-dose deprenyl to preserve youthful neurotransmitter levels and brain function, slow cognitive and physical decline, and promote longevity.
Deprenyl Protects the Brain Besides its dopamine-potentiating ability, deprenyl displays multiple neuro-protective properties. It boosts levels of endogenous antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase in the brain, (1,5,7,8,18) while also scavenging free radicals and other reactive oxygens. (1,3,5) This dual antioxidant defense is another way that deprenyl slows down the aging process and ameliorates neurodegenerative diseases, both of which are associated with cumulative oxidative damage. Deprenyl also neutralizes dangerous neurotoxins, such as MPTP, (1,2,5) which has been shown experimentally to produce Parkinson’s symptoms, (2) and protects against glutamate-receptor-mediated toxicity. (3,4) Glutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter that can be lethal to brain cells. Furthermore, deprenyl has been shown to rescue damaged neurons. (3,4) Because deprenyl is such a powerful brain defender, researchers have labeled it one of the “most promising neuroprotective agents to date.“ (4,19).
More recently, the drug has also showed promise in treating Alzheimer’s disease, which involves the impairment of several neurotransmitter systems, including dopamine. The dysfunction of the dopaminergic system is associated with an increase in MAO-B, and interestingly, the extent of this rise is proportional to the severity of dementia. (3) As in Parkinson’s, deprenyl has demonstrated positive effects on cognitive performance and memory in Alzheimer’s patients, (3,15,16) as a result of enhanced function of the prefrontal areas of the brain that are rich in dopamine receptors. (3)

Deprenyl Extends Life Span by Unique “Enhancer” Mechanism We’ve just seen deprenyl’s potent effects in slowing cognitive and physical deterioration and protecting the brain; but perhaps even more compelling is its age-retarding effect, which has been demonstrated in rats, mice, hamsters and dogs. (15,18;20-23) In one of numerous experiments evaluating the drug’s impact on life span, female rats treated with deprenyl lived longer than placebo-treated rats, in some cases twice as long (36 months versus 15 months). (21) In another trial, immunosuppressed mice fed a deprenylspiked diet lived up to three times longer than the control mice (14.5 months versus 5 months). (22) Joszef Knoll, the Hungarian doctor who discovered deprenyl, performed several fascinating experiments on rodent longevity including one in which he tested the effects of deprenyl on 94 sexually inactive and 99 highly active rats. Knoll observed that the group of highly active rats lived longer (153 weeks) than the “under-sexed” rats (135 weeks), and that medication with deprenyl enabled the underachievers to reach an equivalent level of sexual activity and longevity as their unmedicated high-performing peers. And when this latter group of already highly lively animals was treated with deprenyl, they became “super” rats, with even greater libido, increased learning capacity, and longer life span (185 weeks), with many living longer than the estimated technical life span! (23) Knoll determined that the mechanism responsible for these remarkable improvements is enhancement of catecholaminergic activity in the brain. (7,24) The catecholamines are the inter-related neurotransmitters dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline. Deprenyl acts as a “neuroamplifier,” boosting the brain’s catecholaminergic circuitry to a higher level of activity. Even though deprenyl is an analogue of methamphetamine and PEA (we’ll see more on this later), the enhancer action is independent of amphetamine-like activity: instead of inducing a continuous release of neurotransmitters from neuronal storage in an uncontrolled manner, deprenyl selectively stimulates and boosts catecholaminergic neurons. (17,24) This mechanism is also unrelated to MAO-B inhibition. (8,25,26) Knoll’s experiments demonstrated that these performance, cognitive, and longevity gains can be achieved by repeated, low-dose administration of deprenyl. (8,25,26) These findings have profound implications for humans in enhancing the quality of their middle and late years of life (i.e., improved sexual, physical, and mental function) and increasing the quantity of those years. Indeed, Knoll postulated that the same mechanism that extends life span and improves sexual and learning performance in rats also operates in humans who incorporate low-dose deprenyl into their anti-aging regimen beginning in their forties. Specifically, Knoll recommends the “prophylactic” administration of deprenyl as a general anti-aging tonic at a dose of 1 mg/day (one-tenth the dose used in Parkinson’s 10
and Alzheimer’s) to slow brain aging and the decline of cognitive and physiological functions, prolong life, and prevent or delay the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. (7,24,27) According to Knoll, this low-dose life extension technique “will work for decades. It will improve the quality of life in the latter period of life, hopefully shifting the time of natural death.”
Professor Knoll’s animal experiments highlight a considerable increase in longevity for the deprenyl treated rats over their nontreated counterparts. In fact, the first deprenyl treated rate to die only did so after all the non-treated rats had died.
It’s important to recognize that the mechanism of catecholamine enhancement, or “neuroamplification,” is one of a kind, and unrelated to any other life extension method that we know of today, such as calorie restriction (CR) and CR mimetics, restoring mitochondrial bioenergentics, telomere-lengthening, hormone restoration, etc. It should also be noted that deprenyl’s longevity effects are also a result of its ability to counteract oxidative damage to the brain’s dopaminergic system during aging. (18)
Reported Effects of Deprenyl in Healthy People Some doctors, including Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, an anti-aging physician and Alzheimer’s researcher, report that deprenyl exhibits a cognitive-boosting power in their Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s patients that is even more dramatic in their disease-free patients who suffer from only mild to moderate age-related memory impairment. Even though these relatively healthy patients take doses recommended for anti-aging purposes (1 mg three times/ week to 1-3 mg/day, depending on age and symptoms), a fraction of the dose used for neurodegenerative diseases (10 mg/day), they exhibit not only better recall, but also improved concentration, cognitive processing speed, and ability to process complex information, with the added benefits of enhanced sex drive, mood, and energy levels. (On a personal note, this author, while writing this article, sampled a 1.25 mg dose (one quarter of a 5-mg tablet) on three separate occasions, and can attest to deprenyl’s

brain-energizing effects.) All of these marked improvements are similar to those observed in Knoll’s experiments with deprenyl-medicated rats, which supports the view that the “enhancer effect” does indeed operate in humans. It should also be noted that a couple of other mechanisms besides catecholamine enhancement may contribute to, or compound, these positive outcomes. For example, the increase in libido may also be mediated by MAO-B inhibition, which increases levels of dopamine and PEA, both of which influence sex drive. (PEA, sometimes called the “love hormone,” is a stimulating brain chemical that acts as a neurotransmitter.) Enhanced levels of both of these neurotransmitters may also contribute to the heightened mood, energy, and youthful vitality reported by those on low-dose deprenyl. In addition, deprenyl’s metabolites also play a role in its complex pharmacology. (28) Two of its three main metabolites, methamphetamine and amphetamine, (28) likely add to its brain stimulatory and cognitive effects, including improvements in learning, memory, and concentration. Keep in mind that at the low doses used for life extension purposes, blood levels of these metabolites would likely be relatively minor. Also, in contrast to amphetamines, deprenyl has been shown over the past 50 years to be an extremely safe drug, free of toxic side effects, and without the risks associated with amphetamine use.
What Dose Should You Take? Knoll recommends a universal 1 mg daily dose for antiaging purposes, but some experts suggest a graduated dosing scheme based on age. For example, a reasonable guideline would be: 1 mg daily, or every other day, for ages 40-45; 2 mg daily for ages 45-50; 3 mg daily for ages 50-55, etc., with dose proportional to age. The best rule of thumb is to start low and increase as desired; cut back if over-stimulation or insomnia occurs. Allicin
It has already been noted that many fish and other mammalian species have changed sex and had there are many problems due to the presence of these estrogen type substances; many leading physicians are advocating that these estrogens may be responsible for many cancers, in particular cervical, breast and prostate types.
Allicin is found in garlic; it is the substance that gives it its distinctive odour. Apart from being a very potent natural antibiotic, (so much so that researchers from the University of East London have successfully treated MRSA with it), allicin is also known to be able to chelate heavy metals, especially lead and mercury. Studies have shown that the foetal excretions of mercury can increase by as much as 400% when allicin is being taken regularly. Artemisinin This plant extract was discovered to be a powerful malaria treatment thousands of years ago by Chinese herbalists, although it is only in the last century that has seen artemisinin used in ‘Western medicine’. Not only does artemisinin treat the global killer Malaria, (as successfully as any anti-malaria drug according to the UN), but recent studies are also showing its medicinal efficacy stretching out to cancer. The extract is obtained from the plant artemesia annua L, (or sweet wormwood). Wormwood is an ancient antiparasitic remedy, even in medieval times it was known to rid the body of worms and flukes. Artemisinin itself has a very rare molecular structure because it has two oxygen atoms linked together by what’s known as an ‘endoperoxide bridge’. Its composition means it reacts with molecules with highiron content, such as the malaria parasites and cancerous tumours. Upon contact with high-iron content cells it forms free radicals that are toxic to the integrity of the invaders. Artemisinin is such a useful malaria treatment/ preventative the Vietnamese army takes it with them into their jungles!
Di-indolymethane Di-indolylmethane (DIM) is the active constituent found inside Brassica vegetables such as cabbages, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli etc. DIM is a potent re-balancer of the estrogen/ testosterone ratio because it aids the excretion of potentially ‘dangerous’ estrogens, particularly the form known as estradiol. This is important because pseudo-estrogens are getting into the environment from plastics, pesticides and drugs like the contraceptive pill. The WHO recognises these toxins in the environment and refers to them as ‘endocrine disruptors,’ in other words they detrimentally alter the 14

EDTA EDTA stands for ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, it is a synthetic amino-acid related to vinegar and once inside the body it binds to heavy metals. EDTA is the most commonly used agent in a detox clinic and it is often administered as an intravenous drip, which means up to an hour is required for it all to pass into the blood. However EDTA can also be used orally and due to that ease of use, more regularly too. When used orally, EDTA is considered to be approximately 10% as effective as an IV; nonetheless oral EDTA still has a viable action. For example, a report by the Los Alamos Research Laboratory in New Mexico (16) showed that EDTA taken orally excreted 5 to 10 times more lead out of children than placebo alone. This has also been confirmed by the Australian Industrial Hygiene Division (17). In addition, EDTA has also been shown to remove cadmium, aluminium, iron, nickel and mercury. (18, 19, 20, 21) One of the principal roles of EDTA has been to remove calcium plagues from arteries, thereby improving blood flow, reducing arterial stiffness and lessening the ‘load’ on the heart itself. Note that it is important to only use the calcium version of EDTA orally (and not the sodium version) and whilst there is some evidence that EDTA does take out some good minerals (zinc for example), the amounts are small and can easily be compensated by taking a multi-vitamin/ mineral supplement at the same time. Furthermore, EDTA can be used in a number of ways other than IV and orally. For example, it can be placed as a powder into a bath to help cleanse the skin. Fiber The role of fiber cannot be overlooked in the detoxification process. This is because whilst other

substances help to bind and shift toxins from the membranes they are residing in, many toxins once ‘released’ then find their way to the gut. Once they have arrived in the gut some of these toxins may simply accumulate there causing other problems, or some can even be reabsorbed- especially if there is inadequate fiber. But good fiber will excrete toxins by passing them quickly out of the body. This is a primary action of fiberto remove toxins from the digestive tract.

ACS200® can be used by spraying into the mouth, nose and ears and is excellent for infections in those areas, or as a precaution to meeting lots of strangers or boarding a plane etc. ACS200® can also be swallowed and allowed to enter the stomach and as such makes a good choice as a mouthwash. Furthermore, it can be applied directly onto the skin and nails to deal with various infections associated with wounds and yeasts.
Zeolite Zeolite is perhaps the ‘new kid on the block’- that is if you can call waiting 300 million years for it to developnew! What I mean is that zeolite is a crystal formed from volcanic ash, but in terms of using it for chelation that purpose is relatively new. What’s interesting about zeolite is that due to its honeycomb shape, it has many ‘arms’ to reach out and grab heavy metals and what’s more it doesn’t appear to grab ‘healthy’ minerals like zinc, instead passing them by and leaving them in-situ. Zeolite has a fast action; users often report on the darker color of their urine within an hour or so of ingesting zeolite, an obvious sign that toxins have been shifted. Zeolite has been described as being a good chelator for aluminium, arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury and tin from the blood and soft tissues, but may not be as effective for extracting deeper deposited toxins. Zeolite can be found in the ACZ Zeolite® spray and also in the ZeoGold Enhanced® capsules, (these also have added hydrogen). Note: zeolite is also included in the EDTA Beyond Clean-2® bath salts.
Synergy, efficacy and quality I appreciate that the selection above is rather a long list; naturally it can be tailored to suit the individual’s needs, or even rotated, so that at different times different toxins are being targeted etc. In my experience, some of the best all round products for this purpose have been developed by Dr. Garry Gordon. Conclusion I’ve never believed in the supplement horse-power race. What I mean is, one supplier boosting that their product has more of X and Y in it than their competitor. At the end of the day, as far as effective detox supplements are concerned, it is their synergy, their efficacy and their quality that separates the best from the rest. Many supplements are built down to a price, only a few are designed up to a standard. When you eventually find a Mercedes, then you understand why you paid more and why you will never want to go back to a Hyundai! Making your diet and lifestyle changes and incorporating quality, synergistic supplements, can make significant changes in just weeks to your energy levels, your wellbeing and your quality of life. The gradual release of heavy metals and toxins will reduce your ‘body burdens’. The net result will be an improved immune system, resulting in dramatically fewer instances of ‘feeling under the weather.’ In addition, the longer term evidence suggests that there will also be a reduction in the likelihood of the development of numerous so-called age related disease and disorders, including reduced risk of dementias, cardiovascular disease and even cancers. Chelation and detox is an excellent example of preventative/ antiaging medicine at its best and one that anyone can introduce to their health program, no matter their current age or condition. Naturally, if you know what toxins are affecting youbecause you have been tested, then that is the best position to be in. Armed with such information you can use this list to pin-point/ target shoot, rather than adopt a shotgun approach. However, there is no harm in incorporating all of the above into a regular regime, thereby ensuring that toxins never get the upper hand on your immunity, strength and stamina.

Dear Dr. Dean, Q. I’ve tried many diets over the years to lose weight, but few seem to have any lasting or significant effect on me. I am aware of the problems of carbohydrates and try to limit them, but they are one of my eating weaknesses. Please recommend something for a 40-year old woman that can aid my lifestyle changes and make it happen! N.M., Thailand
A. Dear N.M., Being overweight is one of the most common and most difficult to treat of the chronic degenerative diseases. The cause is multifactorial. It is not psychological weakness. One of the most common contributing causes is undiagnosed or undertreated sub-clinical or overt hypothyroidism. See Dr. Rick Wilkinson’s article, “The Epidemic of Low Thyroid Diseases,” in Issue # 4, 2014 of Aging Matters Magazine, for more on this important condition. Unfortunately, if one has many hypothyroid symptoms (which may include cold hands and feet, hyperlipidemia, low energy, difficult weight loss, depression, constipation, menstrual problems) but “normal” thyroid blood tests, it will be difficult to find a physician who will prescribe an appropriate dose of thyroid. I follow guidelines similar to those recommended by Dr. Wilkinson (and our mentor, Broda Barnes, M.D.1). If a patient has a panoply of hypothyroid symptoms (especially weight gain), I start the patient on 1 grain of Armour Thyroid, and titrate the dose up or down over several months, based on the patient’s response, body temperature, and heart rate. If the heart rate stays in the normal range
(60-80), and the patient feels well, there is little likelihood of causing an overdose, regardless of the blood test results. I have generally found that thyroid function blood tests are a waste of blood. In Aging Matters, Issue # 2, 2014, in his article “The Rotational Origin of Diseases and Aging,” Prof. Walter Pierpaoli seems to agree, where he stated, “…the laboratory assays [for thyroid] are totally misleading and wrong!” He recommended keeping TSH at ZERO and ‘free’ T3 with ‘free’ T4 two-three times higher! A second and more common cause of overweight is hyperinsulinemia, or dysmetabolic syndrome. As we grow older, we are all turning into diabetics (or becoming “prediabetic”). We tend to become insulin resistant, and our pancreas compensates by producing more insulin. Insulin is the hormone that drives glucose from the blood into the cells where it is used to produce energy—and what’s left over is stored as fat. This was the basis of the Atkins Diet—a high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet designed to minimize rises in blood glucose and insulin. Atkins knew that “carbs are the enemy.” For my overweight patients, I routinely recommend 500 mg Metformin, taken three times per day. Metformin acts as a “metabolic rejuvenator,” restoring insulin receptor sensitivity, and delaying a process known as “hepatic gluconeogenesis,” by which the liver produces sugar from non-carbohydrate sources. Patients taking Metformin feel better, have more energy, and lose their carbohydrate cravings—and generally lose body fat. extension drug, with a broad range of benefits.” Another anti-diabetic drug that I include in my weight loss program is Acarbose, an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor. Acarbose acts at the brush border of the small intestine, where carbohydrates are broken down into sugar which is then absorbed. By blocking the breakdown of most carbohydrates into sugar, post-prandial (after-meal) blood glucose levels are suppressed, and fewer calories from glucose are absorbed (Fig). Without acarbose

The undigested carbohydrates, upon reaching the colon, may ferment, producing uncomfortable gas. This usually becomes less bothersome with continued use, but if it is unpleasant, you can reduce the dose of acarbose with each meal. Most studies of Acarbose, when used alone, do not result in significant weight loss. However, in my experience, used in combination with Metformin, Acarbose significantly enhances the weight-loss benefits of Metformin.

A. Dear Mrs. A.P., Yes, I believe fatty liver can be reversed. A number of substances have been used individually which resulted in resolution of the metabolic abnormalities caused by hepatic steatosis. I think a combination of these substances will be even more effective, as they all act by complimentary mechanisms. Scientists from China recently reported metformin to be the treatment of choice for hepatic steatosis.1 I recommend 500 mg three times daily. Anhydrous betaine (trimethylglycine) has been shown to correct defective cellular methylation reactions, prevent alcohol-mediated steatosis, and promote the efficiency of the hepatic mitochondrial respiratory chain.2 I recommend a daily dosage of about 5 grams. A third nutrient to incorporate in your regimen is Green Tea Extract (GTE). Scientists at the University of Connecticut fed Green Tea Extract to a specific strain of mouse that is used as a model for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).3 The authors found that GTE protects against the development of hepatic steatosis and reduces hepatic injury—and recommended GTE as a dietary strategy to prevent NAFLD.

A fourth “ingredient” in your program should be the amino acid Taurine. Scientists in England at the University of London demonstrated that treatment of Sprague Dawley rats with Taurine for 2 days reversed hepatic steatosis to below control values, as assessed biochemically and histologically.4 The researchers pointed out that humans have a greatly reduced aability to synthesize taurine compared to rats, and we must rely on dietary supplementation to an even greater degree than rats. Thus, it appears that humans would benefit from supplemental taurine even more than the rats did. I recommend about 1.5-2.0 grams of supplemental taurine each day.

It is essential to reduce/eliminate your exposure to these mycotoxins. Unfortunately, there are not many ways to destroy them. One way is through fire (tough, if it is your house that is contaminated). Another way is bleach with 5% sodium hypochlorite. Sodium hypochlorite is described as MMS (Miracle Mineral Solution), and you can find excellent discussions of its therapeutic use for combating mold and mycotoxins at www.curezone.org. Ozone might also destroy some mycotoxins. Some commercial firms use large ozone generators to detoxify strutctures--and you might consider autohematogenous therapy with ozone for yourself. First, are you sure about exposure to the mold mycotoxin, tricothecene? There is no known cure for mycotoxicosis, and tricothecene is one of the most toxic, stable types of mycotoxins. With regard to your specific questions: Colostrum may help, but I don’t think it will replace the benefits of 1st Line™. Colostrum does contain LPO, but in very small amounts and does not deliver oxythiocynate (OCN). I don’t believe it will trigger the ion release that a kit of 1st Line™ will. 1st Line™ delivers 25 mg of oxythiocynate ions (OCN), which are on the ‘sharp end’ of destroying the infections. These ions are activated by LPO, so colostrum may enhance the efficacy of 1st Line™. Dosage is difficult from a distance, but considering the potential seriousness of mycotoxin exposure, I suggest 2 kits on successive days. CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10) CoQ10 is a universal energy agent that has significant protective qualities for the heart and the cardiovascular system. An important point- anyone taking a statin drug to lower cholesterol must also be taking CoQ10 since statins lower CoQ10 levels.

Deprenyl (selegiline) Parkinson’s disease is characterised by the loss of the brain neurotransmitter dopamine. Deprenyl helps to prevent this loss by acting on the specific enzyme MAO-b. Professor Knoll also believes that deprenyl very significantly increases PEA (phenylethylamine) and that this may have an even more significant function than the MAO-b inhibition, (for more details on this please read Professor Knoll’s excellent book on the subject- ‘the brain and its self’). In addition to improving dopamine levels, deprenyl has also been shown to help rebalance serotonin, noradrenaline and acetylcholine levels and whilst the uses remain ‘off-label’ deprenyl has been used for Alzheimer’s and even cancer treatments. GABOB (Gamibetal®) Technically it is the closest legal molecule to GHB. GABOB does not have the ‘sleep inducing’ effects of GHB, but it can cause some sedation if taken in high doses.

Glutathione is a potent antioxidant that helps to prevent damage to important cellular components that can be caused by reactive oxygen species such as free radicals and peroxides.
HemaGel was created in the Czech Republic and specially designed to help improve the treatment times of wounds, scratches and cuts, reducing the start-tofinish treatment time by as much as 50%. It does this (1) by absorbing harmful and damaging free radicals and (2) by helping to absorb blood and puss extrudes, thus also keeping the wound cleaner. HemaGel is recommended for use after BEC5 Curaderm applications to speed up the skin’s healing. It is also as an excellent product to have in the First Aid cabinet- just in case! Hydergine (ergoloid mesylate) Hydergine is an extract of a fungus that grows on rye called ergoloid mesylate. Its approved uses have been to aid persons with memory disturbances, Alzheimer’s disease and even for persons who have suffered from electric shock, drowning or suffocation. This is because hydergine stabilises the levels of oxygen in the brain. It has been shown to improve oxygen levels when they are too low and decreases levels when they are too high. The result of this optimised oxygen availability in the brain is an ability to do more mental work without becoming tired. Accordingly, hydergine can be a good

tool to battle through boring paperwork or a long drive home in the dark. A fascinating animal experiment showed a special ability for hydergine to improve mitochondrial condition. The mitochondria are vital organelles found in every cell of our body responsible for the generation of ATP, the universal energy molecule. Unfortunately mitochondrial efficiency declines as we age. However, an Italian study highlighted that old animal mitochondria can be improved with hydergine supplementation. The Bertonin-Freddari et al, 1994 study highlights that hydergine can improve the size, volume and number of mitochondria in old animals- towards the youthful example; as is shown here the difference between young, old (without hydergine) and old (with hydergine) is significant. Hydergine also stimulates the growth of dendrite nerve fibers. These connective strands are known to decline in aging. This is another antiaging feature of hydergine. Some have even linked the density and numbers of dendrite fibers to the level of I.Q. In summary, hydergine helps to protect against conditions of hypoxia and peroxidation, important factors to guard against a stroke and generalised brain injuries. Hydergine can extend the boundaries of mental workload and energy, fighting against boredom and may even provide some groundwork for raising the levels of intelligence.
Melatonin (MZS™) Melatonin is one of nature’s remarkable substances. It is made in response to darkness by the pineal gland. Melatonin’s benefits to help overcome jet lag and shift work have become quite well known and indeed it is useful for this purpose since adequate melatonin availability enables our bodies to be correctly in tune with our circadian rhythms. These circadian rhythms dictate our hormonal cyclicity and this cyclicity ultimately determines our aging and our level of immunity. Unfortunately melatonin secretions decline with aging. Professor Pierpaoli has published widely on melatonin, principally through the New York Academy of Science and at the meetings of the Stromboli conferences on aging and cancer- which IAS is delighted to support. What is important to know about melatonin is that Professor Pierpaoli advocates a 3mg dose to (his words) “put the pineal to sleep.” In addition, it is also vital to use a melatonin that produces a night peak of melatonin that is the same as the peak produced by the pineal itself. Thus he has achieved using specific excipients in his own formula ‘MZS™’ (which also contains the additional synergistic ingredients of zinc and selenium). 28

Note that sublingual melatonin tested peaks too soon and that time released formulas peak too late. Here are some before and after Fundus photos showing the benefit of Melatonin Zn Se. They highlight dramatic improvements to both wet and dry forms of macular degeneration. In a trial published in the New York Academy of Science, 110 eyes, (100 patients) with both wet and dry forms of ARMD were treated only with 1 tablet of Melatonin Zn Se nightly. After 6-months 90% of the treated patients’ eyes had significant improvements to their condition. This is simply remarkable compared to the current approved therapy for ARMD which involves injecting the eye quarterly, (costs $1000+) with 50% improvement at 24-months! Piracetam (Nootropil®; also see Anacervix®) Piracetam was the very first nootropic, (commonly called smart drugs) to be developed. Despite being one of the very first products that IAS offered when we went online in 1991, it remains one of our best selling products today! Why? Because it is a very beneficial memory agent that has a great safety record, with very few side effects. Plus, it is cost effective. Piracetam has been shown to be safer than salt. This may be because it has a very small impact upon brain chemical levels and helps to improve electrical communication across the brain’s corpus callosum. The corpus callosum is the bundle of nerves that separates the two hemispheres of the brain. In medical terms piracetam is used to improve short term memory and to treat a wide variety of senile dementias as well as autism and Down’s syndrome and can also assist with travel and altitude sickness. PQQ (pyroloquinoline quinone) PQQ is the most newly discovered vitamin. Progesterone Progesterone is often the ‘missing’ hormone in the treatment of female menopause. Sermorelin

Sermorelin is a breakthrough development in the field of growth hormone (GH) replacement. Sermorelin is the bioidentical molecule used by the pituitary gland to stimulate the production and release of GH into the bloodstream. Sermorelin is not GH; GH is a complicated molecule consisting of 191 amino acids. Sermorelin is a chain of 29 amino acids. Importantly it is the first 29 amino acids of GH, the part responsible for activation. This is what makes sermorelin stand head and shoulders over all previous agonists of GH. TA65® TA65 contains a highly purified specialized extract of the Chinese herb astragalus. What makes this supplement totally unique is that it is the first natural substance that has been proven to act as a telomerase activator and to extend telomeres in humans (in-vivo). Vasopressin Vasopressin is a porcine extracted source for this pituitary hormone which has a number of interesting roles. The first step is to become a member of the Paybyvoucher. com website. Registration is free with no monthly or annual charges levied against your account. Please be aware that Pay By Voucher may request certain documents from you for verification purposes.
Create your own value voucher by using the buy vouchers link and entering the value you require and submitting your request .
To successfully complete registration you have to confirm a One Time Pin (OTP) on the registration confirmation page. This pin will be sent to your mobile phone, so please make sure that you supply a valid mobile phone number. Important things to remember You should only set up one account with Pay By Voucher per email address or it causes a flag. If you have trouble, use the Pay By Voucher chat or customer service to get assistance, rather than just try to create a new account.
2. Register your credit card For security reasons Pay By Voucher require you to register your Credit Card. Once your Credit Card is registered every purchase is directly debited against your card. Once registration is complete, you can start transacting. Important things to remember Paybyvoucher comply with the Card Association regulations and your CVV number is not recorded and/or stored on their database.
