Borders + Boundaries
experimental theater center for the triregio basel Basel is located in the northeast of Switzerland, forming boarders with France and Germany. Despite these geopolitical borders the city is influenced by the cultural and social exchange between the three countries – creating a common area of the “Triregio”. For the region, the river Rhine represents an important factor for the economic and social development because of the harborfunctions. Therefore, Basel is marked by trading, transportation and also international exchange, forming a strategically point in the region. Over decades wealth of trading was created and represented by Swiss families which are partly involved in international pharmaceutical companies based in Basel. Those families acted as art patrons, encouraging culture in this region. Since then, Basel stands for its international famous trade fairs and outstanding art collections and theatre of the city and region. But apart from this traditional cultural activities and consume of art, a lively innovative young cultural scene is characteristic for Basel - latter situ-
ated clearly in Kleinbasel and therefore effecting the urban character of the city. This difference is based on the development of the city and separation of the Rhine. Since the incorporation of the fisher and trading settlement of Kleinbasel the urban planning aims to connect them. But due to the urban pattern, the difference is still alive. While Großbasel is marked by a circular structure, Kleinbasel is organized parallel to the river. Therefore, the bridges to connect the districts are perpendicular to the structure which explains the difficulty in activating their prolongations as axes which should connect the two sites. The most important axe is the one to the Badische Bahnhof. But apart from the station the area is marked by social downgrading and vast areas of trails which create a void in the urban fabric and at the same time a boundary. How can architectrre work as a link between those areas to activate the exchange - also regarding the special siuation of the train station and trails by being part of the German territory.

Badischer Bahnhof_German Railway Station site „in between“
The proposed site is situated in Kleinbasel - next to the german railway station Badischer Bahnhof. An area which is on Swiss territory but under the government and law of Germany; also its trails which are directly going to Germany. Therefore, this area inext to the Badischer Bahnhof forms an interesting void in the urban fabric; marked by by its natural and built borders which are defining the urban situation. Due to be limited by the trails and main road “Schwarzwaldallee” the site is isolated from the adjacent districts. At the same time, the site is near the green area of Basel, leading directly to Germany. The void is a neuralgic point of the city, characterized by transport, trade and contact of different cultures. How can „in between spaces“ become common ground for interaction? An urban mediator? Site Plan Basel 7
Experimental Theatre as urban space design assignment
The IAT Studio Design is about to create a proposal for an Experimental Theatre Center for the Triregio in Basel. The purpose is to examine the impact and influence of architecture on the interconnection of urban coexistence in the perception of society’s diversity and its contribution to overcome ethnic, political or social “borders” or “boundaries”. The work should interpret and define the meaning of boundaries and borders in the given location. The question will be where connection or division is needed and how the architectural intervention can articulate and establish this given framework. The experimental theatre should be thought as medium to break with limits or to take position in the urban and social environment. Due to its given function and program of public and private spaces – the architecture should also reflect on the concept of “experimental theatre”; defining on the one hand the urban interaction of the architecture and on the other hand the space for the individual performance. The
architecture should enter into dialog with the context – not reflecting a monolog. The space should motivate the user to get into action based on the idea of experimental theatre: converting the spectators into actors in the society. This means to extend the interaction to the linked spaces – not only concentrating on the space and play of the theatre. Therefore a holistic approach is required for the whole setting, stressing out the architectural discourse in terms of urban and social context, integration and impact. Thus, the program underlines and supports this idea of architecture as a linking element in the urban environment. The center provides, apart from three different sized and used theatre areas, a variety of studios, workshop, atelier and cultural education areas, underlining the importance of communication and interchange. The Studio explores the architectural potentials in order to develop an integrated urban typology.

The building, wich is partly situated under the railway track, extends the urban axe of the „Bahndamm“ and creates a courtyard next to the „Schwarzwaldallee“ and „Maulbeerstraße“. This square, wich has a visual reference to the „Badischer Bahnhof“, interconnects all levels with three different entrances. Each entrance leads the visitors to a different stage or a puplic function. The apparently floating structural body next to the main street contains the main stage and, as a seperate element, the small stage wich is designed as a „cafe theatre“. The volume below the street level contains all service areas as well as the middle stage. The middle stage offers the possibility of a spatial extension towards the external square wich is also located in the underground. At this level, the motorway serves as as floating set for the square and the stage as well. In the northern part of the complex, next to the park is the library with an own entrance. 10

The building complex consists of three massive solids composed by an translucent volume. To differentiate from the block perimeter development, the whole complex does not follow any alignings of the neighbour buildings. The translucent building contains the main entrance and works as the backbone of the complex. It works as an connection between the different levels of the site and the functions of the theare, but also as an border between the industrial structure of the railway station and the urban structure of the city. The massive towers define three theatre halls on the lower level which can be connected to one big hall. In each of the theatres the floor includes lifting platforms which give a maximum amount of flexibility. On the upper floors there are studios for acting, music and dancing.

The purpose for Experimental Theater Center in Triregio, Basel is located along the main road “Schwarzwaldallee” and designed as three connected buildings. Buildings are inspired after axes of its surrounding and put itself in front when needed. Every building has a specific function related to the given program, Theatre and a public place that the building is oriented in. The given situation has three levels – Street level, railroad level and highway access level. The purpose manages to connect all three levels in building structure and offers additional two levels of public places, each in its own level, which clearly outlines its purpose. The first one is 5,25m lower than Street level and is accessible in two points. The connections between places (12,25m) are staircases that also have a sculptural function. The exterior is simple, clear, connected and 28
appears grounded. In contrast to exterior, interior is flexible, playful, airy and offers connections between places and programs. The Theatre design purpose offers three different Theatres with a strong character. The main Theatre –stage, is designed as a flexible performance hall, with the possibility to access in two levels and strong connection with foyer that blurs the lines of a theater hall. The medium Theatre is made of hanging cube made of translucent glass, which offers a touch of performance for all visitors, even for those that do not sit directly in the hall. Small theatre is orientated to the second public place and consequently connected to the tracks of the German and Swiss railroad, which gives the Theatre unique character. Theatre design is flexible, because the performances can be performed outside or inside.

Michael Münzer Alles ist Bühne
The building is located north of the historic city of Kleinbasel. Along the Schwarzwaldallee beside the old railway station further infrastructure construction are located. On an about 11,500 m2 large remaining site of the railway station area an experimental theater center is to be developed. In the urban arragement of Kleinbasel the property is located on a very sensitive interface between central districts and the suburban areas. The concept Alles ist Bühne tries to counteract the very strictly separated areas along the station axis. In the northeast the entire facility focuses on the rail tracks whereas in the southwest an intensive involvement of the urban space is created. The simple industrial hall should integrate seamlessly into the linear structure of the surrounding buildings and be part of the prevailing urban organization. The typology of the hall allows 34
users to generate convertible and versatile stage areas. The project is to be understood as a structure for adaptation of users. In front of the „stage sector“ a scaffold is located which can be seen as a vertical addition of urban space and at the same time understood as a horizontal spread of the theater. This framework therefore defines itself as a direct connecting element between the city and the theater. The deliberately generated, unclear affiliation of this element transcends the boundaries between outside – inside, city – theater, audience area – stage. The building is based on a grid of six meters. In the outdoor space pillars are placed in the same grid. So the inner structure continues in the outdoor park. Now users have the possibility to adapt their environment to their needs, to generate different spatial structures. Alles ist Bühne.

theater in motion
The proposal „Theatre in motion“ is all about motion because movement, dynamic, rythm, tension are implicit in the experimental character of the centre. Aspects which are transferred to a building volume; the architecture is creating the space for it. Further, according to the urban situation, the site is something in between a strict and dense urban structure and a development with a low density. Based on a long straight volume - the ‚backbone‘ which reacts on the boundaries. The architecture of the theatre center follows this movement. The volumes are acting as ‚guideline‘, linking different street levels, surrounding area and outnlining urban axis for orientation. The space between the volumes is creating the dynamic movement in different levels of speed - the void as active urban space. These areas are the public guide through the urban space up to the green areas of the outside. 38

The purpose for Experimental Theater Center in Triegio, Basel is located along the main road “Schwarzwaldallee” and designed as three connected buildings. Buildings are inspired after axes of its surrounding and put itself in front when needed. Every building has a specific function related to the given program, Theatre and a public place that the building is oriented in. The given situation has three levels – Street level, railroad level and highway access level. The proposal manages to connect all three levels in building structure and offers additional two levels of public places, each in its own level, which clearly outlines its purpose. The first one is 5,25m lower than Street level and is accessible in two points. The connections between places (12,25m) are staircases that also have a sculptural function. The exterior is simple, clear, connected and appears 44
grounded.
