Modern, Minimal, Natural A Colourful Gem When the owner of this busy twobedroom, two-bathroom family home on North Shore was planning her new kitchen she wanted a feeling so natural, it was almost as if she were outside. The starting point for this design element was a tree. Well, not quite a tree, but a beautiful plank of Ash hardwood that was milled, finished, stained in a way that makes it look like it’s almost floating: “One of the features she absolutely wanted in the house was a live edge countertop,” recalls Akilah Swan, Director of Aina Curated, who designed the kitchen. The owner says, “I felt it was warm and it made me feel home. I wanted the kitchen to be functional, but with the live edge. It’s nature inside the house. I like all of the character in it. I like the detail and I like the feel of it.” “I want to give Fine Woodworking a lot of credit, for getting the finishing right” says Swan. Elsewhere, the kitchen is filled with other natural or natural-looking features including ‘straw’ coloured oak as well as white-painted maple cabinetry, large ‘stone-like’ backsplash tiles covering the whole back wall, glass pendant light fixtures with brass and leather detailing, and wooden bar stools with metal detailing. Swan designed the open shelving either side of the stove hood to avoid clutter and
because the owner likes “clean and clear”. Hidden on the ‘working’ side of the island is a drawer microwave and dishwasher, and an immaculately stocked floor to ceiling roll-out pantry. There is a fireplace on the feature wall, with narrow, built in shelving, that is perfect for keys and other everyday items. Swan, working in close collaboration with the owner, successfully achieved a natural, minimal look and feel for this kitchen.
Home to “empty nesters”, Marcus and Sophia Jones, this two-bedroom, one-bathroom Sandys property had originally been built by Mr. Jones 35 years ago and “the main goal was to refresh the home and really take it to a level of ‘we’re going to be here for the rest of our lives,” explains Akilah Swan, Director of Aina Curated, who designed the interior. In addition to traditional Bermudian design features, such as painted wooden ceiling beams and doors, bold and creative use of colour is one of the striking features. “Every piece was intentionally picked”, Swan says. From the painted lacquer finished nightstands in the main

Seamless IndoorOutdoor Living Akilah Swan, Director of Aina Curated was brought in by the owners of this Southampton property to transform what was a two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment beneath a family home, into a three-bedroom, two-bathroom dream. Construction work involved the addition of an en suite bedroom, new entryway and patio extension off the 12

YOUR HOME bedroom, to acrylic nesting tables and bar stools in the office and dining area. Stylish ‘zebra blinds’ have replaced venetian blinds, making it easier to appreciate the “brilliant blue” ocean view, while still protecting from the sun’s glare. The original plan was to wallpaper the stairwell to the upstairs, but explains Swan, “we had some concerns about dampness in this area as well as the cost, so getting a significant, large, artwork does the best of both worlds.” The artwork is called ‘Top of the World’, by late Canadian artist, Ronald Simpkins. “It’s meant to be that soft transition space. It gives it that pop. It draws you into wanting to come up to the second floor,” says Swan. A second show-stopping piece can be found in the owners’ bedroom. The pair of painted canvas panels called ‘Paradis Chinosoiserie 1 and 2’, were sourced by Swan. Expertly installed into these panels are plug-in wall lamps, which double up as bedside lamps and draw the eye to the artwork. As you walk into the bathroom, you are met by a far wall of large ‘Jungle’ shower tile from Pembroke Tile & Stone: “We purposely went with very large

format tile,” explains Swan. “It cuts down on labour costs, and also gives a much grander feeling to a small space.” Bringing the tile together with the rest of the bathroom colour palette are the
grey blinds, large grey ‘Grigio Rettificato’ side tile and grey vanity. Undergoing any sort of renovation can be stressful, but, says Mr Jones, the finished product “blew us way”.
living room. “The living room is the same size as before, but as soon as Akilah widened the door leading out to the patio, and added more light, it feels almost twice as big as it used to,” says the owner. A transom window above the new patio door, adds even more light. Getting more out of the kitchen was also a priority. Swan hates clutter so, in addition to extensive cabinetry and a new kitchen island, she also included her signature open shelving and space around the range hood so, she explains, “you don’t walk into a wall of cabinets. YOUR HOME in making the new space flow well and the starting point was the ‘Nimbus’ quartz kitchen countertop. “The owners like deep blues, grey, gun metal feel, and finding that countertop was what really started to marry everything together,” says Swan, with ‘Storm’ grey for the cabinets, ‘Drift’ for the island cabinetry, and gun metal hardware. Where the kitchen floor had previously been tiled, there is now a wood-like vinyl floor tile running all the way through to the hallway, new bedroom and living area, which also enhances the flow. A light charcoal coloured floor tile was chosen for the outdoor patio. Because there is no formal dining room, having a kitchen in which family and friends can gather and also an outdoor porch and patio option for entertaining added huge value to the project.

Stately Kitchen for a Stately Home For this elegant, fully renovated historic house in Paget, CTX design group created a custom kitchen that complemented the many original design elements of this family home, which include large wooden windows, mouldings, and cedar beams in the ceiling. Designed by Madeline White, the kitchen is full of show-stopping pieces, the most unique of which, is the solid marble sink: “It makes the kitchen,” she says. “It’s a solid piece of marble that’s been carved.” Being an old house, the space was awkward, so White turned to a custom cabinetry maker, choosing a traditional inset cabinet door style in navy for the island, with a marble countertop. The client was very involved in the kitchen design and, she says, “has an eclectic style. A lot of colour and interest. She likes ‘funner’ finishes, which was great.” Being a busy, young family, secondary counter and storage space has been created against the far wall, which includes a microwave, toaster and secondary fridge, so the children can get what they need, without being in the way of the cook. In traditional CTX style, tall cabinets providing maximum storage are offset with open shelving and the lighting has been carefully sourced and strategically placed. The fixtures are simple, but eyecatching, and look custom designed for the space.
Neutral but Packs a Punch Integrating a new kitchen into existing aspects of a home is always a challenge, especially when that floor is being opened up into other rooms. CTX Design Group Interior Designer, Lauren Grayston, therefore kept the kitchen in this Smith’s home a neutral colour, with white cabinetry, oak floors and, wherever possible, integrated appliances. To create interest and depth amongst the neutrality, Grayston added “little punches” with the hardware, textured backsplash, black accents in the lighting and sink faucet, and stools in dark wood and black metal. What had been a “pantry that was difficult to access”, was opened up to create a cocktail, coffee and tea bar area, tucked around the corner. It has high black framed, back lit, cabinets for crystal stemware and a full-length cabinet height dual wine fridge. Also hidden around here is a dishwasher, toaster and lots of extra storage.

KITCHENS Symmetrical and Visually Impactful
Hard-Working Laundry Room Down the hallway from the newly designed kitchen, Grayston created a large, bright, hard-working space not just for laundry, but also to hide ‘stuff ’ and because of its size, this room also doubles as a secondary play space. Deliberately bold in colour, this, she says “is the energy. She’s working hard here.” In addition to a large washing machine and dryer, there is also a large sink and lots of storage.

Meticulously designed by Sarah O’Brien, Interior Designer at CTX Design Group, the kitchen of this Riddell’s Bay home is eye-catching, without distracting from the water views beyond. The owners of this vacation home are from Boston and wanted a kitchen similar in style to that of their home city, that also lent itself to the more relaxed island lifestyle. O’Brien mixed a dark stained wood, oil rub bronze hardware, and a ‘soap stone’ finished Silestone quartz, with white shaker cabinets, creating a light and bright space.
Structural, exposed ceiling beams add to the kitchen’s character and, says O’Brien, “it was very important that the kitchen layout lined up, and was centred on, the beams. Symmetry was a big part of the kitchen aesthetic.” The pendant and wall lights

Bold, Beautiful and on a Budget Designed on a budget and delivered within a very tight timeframe, the new kitchen in this busy Paget family home, overlooking Hamilton Harbour, is testament to the fact that you don’t have to cut corners to create beauty and functionality. “The floors remained, I reconfigured the layout. It was quite awkward before, but I kept the sink in the same spot to keep that infrastructure in place. The only thing I moved was the fridge as that allowed us to open the space up and provide a better work triangle for the client,” says CTX Design Group Interior Designer, Lauren Grayston. “The hanging lights were in awkward locations before,” she continues. “We removed those and put two back in where it made sense and added in the wall sconces for that little bit of style and 16

Country Cottage Style on the Sound Texture, pattern and traditional details all come together to create the ultimate farmhouse-style kitchen in this Harrington Sound home. From the matching corbels on the kitchen island and oven hood, to the shiplap planking and hand-painted tile backsplash, every detail helps create this look and feel. Although the kitchen was designed by Lauren Grayston and Madeline White of CTX Design Group, the owner, they say, “was the driving force behind how she wanted it to look. Really, she was the lead designer and we were helping make sure it all came together.” Wood, in a variety of forms, is very much a dominant feature and creates a warm, rustic and cosy feel. In addition to the shiplap on the island, there are oak beams in the ceiling, an oak island countertop, oak features on the hood and an engineered wood floor in a darker tone. To create open space, without compromising on storage, they decided not to run the cabinets all the way to the window, but instead built a tall cabinet character.” Also adding considerable style and character is the choice of colours, in particular the client’s taste in fabric roman blinds: “The client has amazing taste with textiles so that was her selection and then we worked around that,” explains Grayston. “So, the colouring for the cabinetry is dark and bold, and the gold accents in the wood and everything was worked around the fabric.” Together, they chose white appliances, with brass hardware and Grayston chose a sink faucet and light fixtures that would tie in with that. She does, however, like to mix up her metals, so chose black hardware for the cabinets, which, she adds, “look great against the green.” Complementing all the tones is a “durable veined quartz” countertop, which runs up the walls to create a backsplash as well.

Storm Inspired What had been “dark and dingy” bathrooms in this three-bedroom Mizzentop home, have been transformed into sophisticated, bright, beach and oceancoloured sanctuaries by the team at L&S Design. Leading the project was Director, Shelley Ray, with the assistance of Interior Designer, Casey Clements. “We had these pictures of Bermuda, the water, the beach during the stormy weather, and we picked colours from those pictures for our inspiration,” explains Clements. For the primary bathroom, which is ensuite, this included a sandy-coloured travertine tile and ocean blues for the vanities. Calmer light blue cabinetry was chosen for this room and a more stormy, dark blue for the guest bathroom. A custom grey-taupe door frame around the entrance to the main bathroom adds to

KITCHENS & BATHS also floor to ceiling cabinetry squeezed between the shower and the entrance, and a large wall to wall, countertop to ceiling mirror in the guest bathroom, which makes the room seem both larger and brighter. The primary bathroom was completely gutted and now includes double sinks, mirrors framed in silver and a new walkin shower, which the owner especially likes and not just because of the clean, white subway tile, new fixtures, and heated towel rail close by, but also because it is ideal as she and her husband get older: “We needed something we can walk into,” she says. Again, to maximise space, Ray incorporated additional vanity space in an otherwise empty spot, right outside the bathroom entrance, in a light wood colour, to match the theme.

Traditional, Intricate, Historic Overlooking Castle Harbour is a newly renovated kitchen in an historic home, which has been given a traditional English-style make-over, but with modern, intricate detail. The original kitchen was “very dark” and felt “closed in”, explains the owner who brought in Shelley Ray, Director of L&S Design, to redesign the space. Casey Clements was the Design Intern for the project. Down one side, is the ‘working’ half of the kitchen, which includes the sink and all the appliances. On the other side of the kitchen island is the decorative half, which has tall display cabinets for the owner’s Portmeirion china. Further storage has been incorporated just off the main kitchen, with matching white cabinetry and, by the huge windows, is a new custom made kitchen table.
The traditional English feel comes out in the colours, textures and metals. There are mixed, but complementary metals and accents for the handles and lighting, panel detailing on the navy-blue kitchen island and shades of neutral white cabinetry for the rest of the kitchen. The backsplash is a simple white subway tile, but with ‘movement’ in the edges and texture. The owner’s Gombey artwork, the colours of which both complement and stand out from the neutral colour palette of the cabinets, was also a crucial consideration in the new design. The layered lighting is particularly striking. It includes large statement pendant lights above the island, brass accented sconces above the sink, smaller “robin’s egg blue” accented sconces opposite, and a rattan pendant above the kitchen table, which matches the chairs below. 19

In place of the usual round ceiling spotlights, Ray incorporated a large number of square ones instead. “I think it brings a sense of clean lines through the design,” explains Clements. Did anything come out better than
expected? “Everything”, laughs the owner. “I really like the stove, I like the display of the artwork, and the colours are beautiful. First thing in the morning, to come down into the light kitchen and then look out is my favourite.”

hen the owners of this Pokiok home, with South Shore views, walked from their bedroom into the closet and on through to the bathroom, they were hit with darkness, disorder and 90s-style décor. Enter Janice Burke, owner of Eye4Design Interior Decorating, who helped them turn these rooms into light, bright, well-organised spaces. Burke used cabinetry to create ‘his and hers’ storage on both sides of the walk-in and through closet, which includes deep drawers, high cabinets, door-less hanging space, laundry hampers, shelving and cubbies for shoes and handbags. There are also slide-out hangers for trousers and scarves, a pull out ‘valet hanger’ to see how well an outfit will go together before putting it on, and a drop down ‘hotel style’ ironing board. The

three of the legs so they are wonderfully mismatched, the team whitewashed it before being upholstered in a complementary sparkling fabric. The huge chandelier adds significant glamour as well as mesmerising patterns onto the ceiling. From the sparkling closet, the owners walk into their newly renovated bathroom, filled with natural light as well as new ceiling and wall lighting. Where there had been a high window, there is

hen designing the kitchen and bathroom for this twobedroom condominium, overlooking Flatts Bridge, Eye4Design Interior Decorator, Janice Burke, needed to maximise space, make an impact, and give it style, while keeping it budget-friendly. Before the decorating could begin, the kitchen was gutted and rearranged to make it work better. The fridge, dishwasher and sink are all on one side for water line convenience. Opposite is the range and microwave. To maximise space in the kitchen, Burke found a Haia fridge. It is ideally configured for small spaces, with French doors, a drawer for drinks and a good-sized freezer drawer beneath. The real stars of the show are the tiles. Large, square grey floor tiles in the kitchen complement the white and grey basketweave backsplash and bring

coloured countertop, which allows the other fixtures and fittings to stand out, including the matt black towel rails, faucet, pulls and mirror frame. One of the many ingenious space saving ‘tricks’ Burke used was to ‘hide’ the toilet roll holder in a vanity drawer, at comfortable arm height from the toilet. Other valuable space savers, include a barn door entry and “skinny” Glacier Bay toilet. A single pane of shower glass also makes the room feel more spacious.

he journey to a vibrant and international-inspired home began with a distinctive ANZZI mosaic series vessel sink in blue gold mosaic—the central inspiration for a Devonshire residence. Seeking the expertise of HASCO Designer Liz James-Edwards, the owners envisioned a home for both entertaining and welcoming family.
The focal point became the powder room, a canvas for the striking blue gold vessel sink. To harmonize, James-Edwards selected ‘brushed gold’ finishes and a mocha brown bamboo sink shelf, complemented by anthracite tiles on the floor and matching bluepainted walls. Small Studio, big beach vibe P erched atop a Southampton hill, with sweeping views of the South Shore, sits a beachy paradise cleverly designed by Junior HASCO Designer, McKenzie Hassell. Managing every detail, Hassell transformed her studio apartment into a modern living haven, skillfully optimising space. In the kitchen-living area, cabinets and flooring were revamped, and the bathroom, doubling as a laundry and walk-in closet, underwent a complete overhaul. Despite its compact size, the space feels open and airy, thanks to vaulted ceilings with exposed wooden beams. To infuse a ‘beach cottage vibe,’ Hassell selected Cubitac kitchen cabinets with a subtle blue hue, complemented by a ‘champagne bronze’ faucet and hardware. A Sandalwood luxury vinyl floor and ‘Weybourne’ quartz countertop add a light touch, harmonising with custom-made open shelves. In the bathroom, a sand-colored pebble tile floor extends into the shower, accompanied by gold fixtures. Storage cleverly integrates a washing machine, tumble dryer, John Louis closet organiser, and white Cubitac kitchen

The kitchen underwent a transformation, opening up into a spacious, open-plan living and dining area that seamlessly extends to a patio through Euro doors, offering panoramic views of the Great Sound. New windows in the kitchen and on the patio optimise the water views, enhancing the home’s connection to its surroundings. Responding to the owner’s desire for a dedicated work area, James-Edwards designed a charming breakfast-nook style seating beneath two corner windows, featuring custom-made bench seating. Elegance defines the cabinetry, adorned in an ‘elegant white’ with brass Richelieu hardware. Deep drawers beneath the countertop ensure ample storage. A bold ‘Indigo Blue’ colors the bench, back, and side panelling, coordinating with the barn door leading to the mudroom.

An ‘Amagansett Gin’ Ivy Hill tile backsplash, with its iridescent quality, complements the natural light pouring in through doors and windows, adding a touch of brilliance to the kitchen. In the bathrooms, the spa-like ambiance is evident, especially in the main bathroom where white stone vessel sinks rest on a white quartz countertop. The stark contrast of the dramatic black floating vanity and matte black fixtures amplifies the sophisticated design. Lightcolored floor and wall tiles, including a honed marble herringbone pattern in the niche, introduce warmth to the space. The second bathroom elevates the spa experience with tub-to-ceiling ‘Stratus glass, white on blue’ shower tile. Crafting a Timeless Downsizing Haven

mbarking on the journey of downsizing and discovering the ideal retirement abode can be a daunting endeavor. However, for the discerning clients of E SE Studios, this process unfolded seamlessly, marked by love at first sight when they stumbled upon their dream apartment at The Grove in Flatt’s Village, Smith’s. Nestled amidst the embrace of mature trees, lush green expanses perfect for gardening and entertaining, and offering breathtaking views of Harrington Sound, The Grove immediately captivated its new occupants. Large windows and glass sliding doors further embraced the beauty of the surroundings, allowing the gentle caress of natural light to grace every corner. While the clients recognised the apartment as their perfect long-term haven, they were also aware of the need for significant transformation. The residence required more than a dash
