he Spanish economy – top of the European class when Aznar was in charge – has entered a period of acute crisis. And to a great extent, the problems are self-inflicted. Things aren’t quite as bad in the Balearics, but it’s all relative. It seems that Ibiza currently ranks as ‘top of the class’ around these parts. Indeed, Ibiza Airport registered an impressive 7.4 % increase in passenger numbers this May compared to the same month last year. By contrast, Mallorca and Menorca airports saw their passenger volumes go down. And when we look at the January to May period, Ibiza still clearly has its nose ahead of the other two. Passenger numbers were up by the same figure – 7.4 % – while Menorca saw a decline of 2.7 %. Meanwhile in Mallorca, they were experiencing a 5.4 % dip. At the same time, though, we must not overlook the fact that Ibiza has 12,000 people on the dole. That’s why the speech given by former Foreign Secretary Abel Matutes at the launching of the new Balearia ferry (which also bears his name) attracted such keen attention. You can read our report on the ship’s christening ceremony on Page 38. It is in everyone’s interest that the season here on Ibiza is not restricted to a few short months in the year. And there are indeed plenty of options open to us for lengthening the holiday season. That would be a very positive development all round – both for local businesses and for visitors to the Island. En Baleares las perspectivas no parecen tan desastrosas, pero todo es relativo. Aparentemente, en estos momentos Ibiza es aquí el primero de la clase. De hecho, el aeropuerto de Ibiza ha concluido el mes de mayo con una notable subida del 7,4 % en comparación con el año anterior. Al contrario, Mallorca y Menorca vieron cómo caían sus registros. Igualmente, si hacemos un cálculo aproximado para el periodo de enero a mayo, Ibiza lleva claramente la delantera. La llegada de pasajeros también subió en dicho periodo un 7,4 %, mientras que en Menorca el número de visitantes se redujo en un 2,7 %. En Mallorca, la caída fue incluso del 5,4 %. No obstante, no hay que perder de vista que Ibiza tiene 12.000 desempleados. Por ello, fueron recibidas con gran expectación las declaraciones del ex-Ministro de Asuntos Exteriores Abel Matutes con motivo de la botadura del ferry que lleva su nombre. En la página 38 incluimos un reportaje al respecto. Además, va en interés de todos que la temporada en Ibiza no se limite a unos pocos meses. En todo caso, no faltan oportunidades para compensar entre sí las distintas fases de la temporada. Esto sería una buena noticia para todos, tanto para las empresas asentadas en la isla como para los propios visitantes. Les deseo a todos un hermoso mes de julio y que disfruten de nuestra revista. Es ist im Interesse Aller, dass sich die Saison auf Ibiza nicht auf ein paar wenige Monate beschränkt. Möglichkeiten für eine Entzerrung der Saison gäbe es auf jeden Fall. aleària Ferries are currently renewing their fleet, with an investment of around 350 million euros. One of the last in a series of three superferries designed to be “fast and yet environmentally friendly”, the Abel Matutes, has now been launched. The ferry was christened in Ibiza harbour last month after a blessing by the Bishop. The godparent was Stella Matutes, the daughter of former Spanish Foreign Minister Abel Matutes. His speech met with widespread approval from the invited guests. Here are a few extracts: The Balearic Islands, and Ibiza and Formentera in particular, have always depended on the sea. With a poor agricultural base and situated on the Berber pirates’ route up until the end of the 18th century, its inhabitants found themselves obliged to make the sea their highway and nutritional cord: fishing, commerce and even the salt flats themselves were their main resource for centuries. […] Things have changed a great deal since then, fortunately, but, apart from the ages that separate us, today we too face threats on the horizon and difficulties to overcome.

There are almost 12 000 people out of work in Ibiza and a very hard winter is coming. The next few years are going to be difficult, too. The public investment that could have helped to relieve this situation has been cut. As president Antich accurately said a few days ago – “We are relying on more private investment because there will be less public investment”. It would be useful if some people took note of this statement. And if they also took note of the fact that in order for there to be more private investment all you have to do is support it instead of harassing it, because in a climate of confidence and rule of law, private investment flows, arrives and creates jobs and wealth. And here and now it is important to remember that with the projects that our group has presented and officially processed, with great popular support and complying with all legal requirements, there would be no unemployment in Ibiza today. In fact, with the yachting marina of Es Viver and the golf course in Playa den Bossa alone, not only would there be no unemployment in Ibiza but we would have higher quality, low-season tourism. I mean, not

Y que tomaran nota también de que para que haya más inversión privada sólo hace falta apoyarla en vez de perseguirla, porque en un clima de confianza y de seguridad jurídica, la inversión privada fluye, acude y crea puestos de trabajo y riqueza. Y hoy y aquí es necesario recordar, que con los proyectos que nuestro grupo ha presentado y tramitado, con gran apoya popular y cumpliendo todo los requisitos legales, hoy no habría paro en Ibiza. En efecto, solamente con el puerto deportivo de Es Viver y el Golf en Playa den Bossa, no solo no habría paro en Ibiza sino que ten-

Every Saturday, there is an opportunity to see the remarkable Neptune grass (Posidonia oceanica) meadows off the coast of Ibiza that have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Tour participants are taken out by kayak from either Ses Figueretes or Talamanca beach and are given a short course in snorkel diving. At an accompanying workshop, visitors can find out fascinating details such as the way that the Neptune grass protects beaches from sand loss.

Todos los sábados a partir de las 10:00, en las playas de Ses Figueretes y Talamanca hay la posibilidad de conocer las praderas de posidonia oceanica declaradas patrimonio natural de la humanidad por la Unesco. Se ofrece una excursión en kayak que incluye un curso de esnórquel. Se pueden tomar fotos de las plantas con una cámara submarina. En un taller se demuestra hasta qué punto pierde arena una playa al desaparecer las barreras naturales de posidonia.

Jeweils samstags besteht an den Stränden Ses Figueretes und Talamanca ab 10 Uhr die Möglichkeit, die zum UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe erklärten Neptunsgraswiesen kennenzulernen. Es wird ein Kajakausflug angeboten, der mit einem Schnorchelkurs verbunden ist. In einem WorkShop wird demonstriert, in welchem Maße ein Strand Sand verliert, wenn die natürlichen Barrieren aus Neptunsgras verschwinden.

El conjunto Dr. Ruth actúa el 18 de julio, y la banda Acentos Flamencos ofrece un concierto el 25 de julio.

Every year on 16th July, the Pitiusas celebrate the Festival of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen, with processions both on land and at sea. Her statue is carried on board a fishing boat which then heads out to sea followed by a convoy of other small craft. The Virgin then has a laurel wreath placed on her head. When the boats return to the harbour, the statue is taken to the church of Sant Elm where a religious service is held.

En las Pitiusas, cada 16 de julio se organizan procesiones por tierra y mar en honor de la patrona de los pescadores, la Virgen del Carmen. La imagen de la Virgen se carga en una barca marinera que zarpa del puerto seguida de las demás. En mar abierto, se le impone a Nuestra Señora una corona de laurel como ofrenda. En cuanto la barca retorna al puerto, da comienzo una misa que concluye en la iglesia de Sant Elm.

Auf den Pityusen werden jedes Jahr am 16. Juli zu Ehren der Schutzpatronin der Fischer, der „Virgen del Carmen“, Prozessionen an Land und auf dem Meer veranstaltet. Die Schutzpatronin wird auf ein Fischerboot verladen, das nun, gefolgt von anderen Booten ausläuft. Auf offener See wird der Jungfrau als Opfergabe ein Lorbeerkranz übergestreift. Sobald das Boot wieder im Hafen anlegt, beginnt eine weitere Messe, die in der Kirche von Sant Elm endet.

Long before the first tourists set foot in Formentera some time in the 20th century, the islanders were staging the annual festival of Sant Jaume in honour of their patron saint. This tradition lives on in our times in the form of folk dancing and ‘cantada pagesa’ in which a male and female singer will sing a duet that generally relates to the battle of the sexes.

Mucho antes de que el primer turista visitara Formentera a mediados del siglo XX, se celebraba ya en la isla un gran festejo en honor del patrono Sant Jaume a la conclusión de los meses de duro trabajo en los campos. Esta tradición se refleja también actualmente en algunos eventos festivos, como la danza campesina y los cantos típicos conocidos como «cantada pagesa». En ella, mozos y mozas expresan sus conflictos como pareja en forma de canción.

Jahrhunderts Formentera besuchte, wurde auf der Insel nach der monatelangen, harten Feldarbeit ein großes Fest zu Ehren des Schutzpatronen der Insel „Sant Jaume“ gefeiert. Diese Tradition spiegelt sich auch heute noch in einigen Festveranstaltungen, wie dem Bauerntanz und den typischen Liedern, der „cantada pagesa“ wider. Hierbei tragen aus Sänger und Sängerinnen als Paar ihren Konflikt in Liedform vor.

Pilar de la Mola is a small village located on the plateau that rises in the east of Formentera. Perched on a cliff at the end of this highest point of the island (193m) is the lighthouse of La Mola from which visitors have a wonderful view out to sea. In the months between May and October, an artists’ cooperative runs a craft fair. As well as jewellery, clothing and pottery, they also sell works of art fashioned from wood.

El Pilar de la Mola es una pequeña localidad situada en una meseta al este de Formentera. Aquí, en el punto a mayor altitud del islote (193 m), se eleva sobre un acantilado el faro de La Mola, que ofrece unas vistas fantásticas. En este pintoresco lugar, un conjunto de artistas organiza de mayo a octubre un mercado de artesanía. Además de joyas, ropa y piezas de alfarería, también se ofrecen obras de arte de madera.

An diesem höchsten Punkt des Eilands (193m) steht auf einer Klippe der Leuchtturm La Mola, der einen sagenhaften Ausblick bietet. An diesem malerischen Ort veranstaltet ein Zusammenschluss von Künstlern in der Zeit von Mai bis Oktober einen Kunsthandwerkermarkt. Neben Schmuck, Kleidung, und Töpferkunst werden auch Kunstwerke aus Holz angeboten.

The Museu d’Art Contemporani d’Eivissa which is provisionally housed in the chapter hall of Ibiza Town Hall, will be displaying some newly acquired works between now and the end of the year. Prominent film director Antonio IsasiIsasmendi has donated a painting by the Francisco Goya while writer Julio Herranz has contributed a work by artist Isabel Echarri. The new collection also contains a painting by Erwin Bechtold and a picture by the Catalan artist Zush.

Hasta finales de este año, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MACE), instalado provisionalmente en la sala capitular del Ayuntamiento de Ibiza, presenta algunas obras de reciente adquisición. El cineasta Isasi-Isasmendi donó un cuadro del pintor Francisco de Goya, y el escritor Julio Herranz, una obra de la artista Isabel Echarri. Además, en la nueva colección hay una obra del artista Erwin Bechtold y un cuadro del artista catalán Zush.

Bis Jahresende präsentiert das Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst (MACE), das provisorisch im Kapitelsaal des Rathauses von Eivissa untergebracht ist, einige neu erworbene Werke. Der Cineast Isasi Isasmendi stiftete ein Gemälde des Malers Francisco Goya und der Schriftsteller Julio Herranz ein Werk der Künstlerin Isabel Echarri. Nika Indorf moves between Ibiza, Barcelona and Middelburg (Holland). In her abstract paintings, she sets out to examine the nature of “reality” and the influence that people can exert over this concept. The 22-year-old Germanborn artist concludes that art and physics are in fact closely related. Nika Indorf’s works are currently on display at Casa Colonial.

Nika Indorf persigue la cuestión del significado de la realidad y cuál es la influencia del ser humano sobre ella. En sus pinturas abstractas, esta artista de 22 años nacida en Alemania intenta mostrar que el arte y la física mantienen una estrecha vinculación. Las obras de esta artista residente en Ibiza, Barcelona y Middelburg (Holanda) pueden verse actualmente en Casa Colonial.

Nika Indorf geht der Frage nach, was Realität bedeutet und welchen Einfluss der Mensch auf diese ausübt. In ihren abstrakten Gemälden versucht die 22-jährige, in Deutschland geborene Künstlerin, zu zeigen, dass Kunst und Physik miteinander in Verbindung stehen. he man who was Mayor of Ibiza for eight years and President of the Island Council since 2007, the socialist Xico Tarrés, a teacher on extended leave of absence and a recent newcomer to the world of jazz, talks about the Ibiza Music Cluster (IMC); a project that seems to have achieved the impossible: consensus between the public and private sectors, collective hopes and the desire to progress towards a common good as valuable as music. From union and dialogue comes strength. Music adds colour and gives splendour. Ibiza looks to the future speaking the universal language.

Is it possible to think –and say- that the music cluster, the Ibiza Music Cluster, is the most ambitious project that currently exists on the island? At this level, yes, without a doubt. Does society understand it as such, do you believe that the people in the street, the Ibicencos, are aware of the scope and significance of the undertaking? People from the world of music, of course, the rest perhaps not yet because music here has been understood only as discotheques, atmosphere and parties for many years. The majority still has to understand and to take on board that we are talking about a modern, innovative musical project, about a music industry that didn’t exist and which will be complementary to the tourist industry, both of them united by the Ibiza brand. And I am convinced that it will be understood, because it is very easy to imagine that music is more than everything I was talking about. It is just a question of time.

¿Cabe pensar –y decir- que el cluster de la música, el Ibiza Music Cluster, es el proyecto más ambicioso que existe actualmente en la isla? A este nivel sí, sin duda. ¿Lo entiende así la sociedad, cree que la gente de la calle, los ibicencos, tienen conciencia de la envergadura y la trascendencia de la iniciativa? La gente del mundo de la música desde luego, el resto quizás todavía no porque durante muchos años la música aquí se ha entendido sólo como discotecas, ambiente y fiesta. Queda comprender y asimilar por parte de la mayoría que estamos hablando de un proyecto musical moderno e innovador, de una industria musical que no existía y que complementará a la turística, ambas unidas por la marca Ibiza. Y estoy convencido de que se entenderá, porque es muy fácil adivinar que la música es más que todo aquello de lo que hablaba. Es sólo una cuestión de tiempo. Könnte man sagen, dass der Ibiza Music Cluster zurzeit das ehrgeizigste Projekt ist, das auf der Insel existiert? Ja, auf dieser Ebene bestimmt. Glauben Sie, dass auch die Gesellschaft, die Menschen auf der Straße und die Ibizenker sich der Bedeutung und der Tragweite dieser Initiative bewusst sind? Den Leuten in der Musikwelt ist die Tragweite allemal bewusst, dem Rest vielleicht nicht, da Musik viele Jahre lang nur für Diskotheken, Stimmung und Feste stand. Die Mehrheit der Menschen muss erst noch begreifen, dass wir von einem modernen und innovativen in der Musikindustrie angesiedeltem Projekt sprechen, das es so noch nie gab und welches die Tourismusindustrie ergänzt. Beide arbeiten im Einklang für die Marke „Ibiza“. Ich bin überzeugt, dass die Leute das Projekt nach und nach verstehen werden, denn man merkt leicht, dass hinter der Musik noch viel mehr steckt, als manche meinen. Es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit.

Der Sozialist und freigestellte Professor ist bekennender Jazzfan und sprach mit uns über den Ibiza Music Cluster (IMC), einem Projekt, das etwas erreicht hat, was vorher fast unmöglich erschien: einen Konsens zwischen öffentlichem und privatem Sektor zu schaffen; kollektive Hoffnung und gemeinsame Lust ein so wertvolles Gut wie die Musik zu fördern. Expectations for this cluster are really high. Don’t you feel a certain sense of vertigo as the highest representative of the public body that represents it officially? No, I am completely convinced of the project. We are working with professionals who know the sector inside out, they know what they are doing and what we should and want to do and we have the conditions and the means to do it the best possible way. The most important step was to bring the musicians, producers, labels etc. together, all the people who live from music and we have already taken this step so I believe that the IMI will run itself from now on, even taking into account the possibility that it will not work out straight away, it will do so with all certainty within some time. Will the Island Council keep its firm commitment to the project or could it become yet another victim of political coming and goings? In this case, I hope that the Council is above any coming and goings there may be in politics. I always say that there are projects that are of national concern and this is one of them. There is a great deal at stake for the future of Ibiza with the IMC.

Kommt bei Ihnen nicht ein leichtes Schwindelgefühl auf, wenn Sie daran denken, dass Sie der wichtigste Vertreter dieser Institution sind und was Sie offiziell repräsentieren? Nein, ich bin sehr überzeugt von dem Projekt. Wir arbeiten mit Profis, die sich in der Branche bestens auskennen und wissen, was sie tun und was wir erreichen möchten. Sie verfügen über genügend Rückhalt und Mittel, um ihr Bestes geben zu können. Der wichtigste Schritt war Musiker, Produzenten, Labels etc. zusammenzubringen - eben alle, die mit Musik zu tun haben. Das haben wir nun meiner Meinung nach geschafft und deswegen glaube ich auch, dass der IMC zum Selbstläufer wird. Auch wenn es sich noch nicht sofort bewahrheiten sollte, wird das Projekt auf alle Fälle innerhalb kurzer Zeit eine Eigendynamik entwickeln. You declare that you are absolutely convinced of the importance and the vital economic significance of the IMC for the island. Are your partners in government equally convinced? Yes, we have been very convinced from the first moment at which we began to organize it. People have to realise that we are promoting a kind of DO, like cheese is promoted in Castilla La Mancha and wine in La Rioja. Ibiza has to be the world centre of music at all levels of the chain of music production. The clubs form part of this chain, occupying an essential place given that they are – as well as being places of leisure and entertainment – a fundamental pillar of the whole tourist industry, a platform for the spread and promotion of music. Why have they continually put so many obstacles in your way? The question of the discotheques has been a difficult one to handle. We have taken decisions that we thought were good for Ibiza about which we were convinced, as was the case with prohibiting the after-hours. It was a measure with which many of us disagreed in its day and considered to be an attack on liberties and yet, time has shown that it was the right decision given that it has enabled us to regulate activity and make it possible for it to coexist with citizens’ daily life. We had to regulate opening times because the result was an image of Ibiza that was good for no one and which, in addition, had negative repercussions on the daily

Las discotecas ha sido un tema difícil de manejar. Nosotros hemos tomado decisiones que pensábamos eran buenas para Ibiza y de las que estábamos convencidos, como fue el caso de prohibir los after-hours. Una medida con la que muchos en su día estuvieron en desacuerdo y que consideraron era un atentado y, sin embargo, el tiempo ha demostrado que fue una decisión acertada puesto que ha permitido regular la actividad y hacerla compatible con la convivencia ciudadana. Había que regular horarios porque se estaba dando una imagen de Ibiza que no era buena para nadie y que además repercutía negativamente en la vida diaria de muchas personas. Die Menschen müssen begreifen, dass wir „unser Produkt“ fördern, ähnlich wie Castilla La Mancha seinen Käse und La Rioja seinen Wein bewirbt. Ibiza soll ein Weltmusikzentrum auf allen Ebenen der Produktionskette werden. Die Clubs sind ein Teil dieser Kette und nehmen einen bedeutenden Platz ein. The island also seems to be asking for more spaces to listen to live music but the licences to carry out such an activity are difficult to get. This is an issue which each town hall regulates, they know where you can set one up and in which conditions, but you have to understand that all this can create conflicts of interest. People can dance, listen to music and have fun but all this must go on within a harmonic and controlled framework in order to ensure that leisure is compatible with rest. You have to place certain limits, which does not mean that the quota is full or closed. If a project for a club or music venue is presented and it meets with all of the necessary requirements and has all of the local and island permits, obviously it has to be authorized and it would be authorized. Going back to the music cluster…there are all sorts of projects in mind, such as the Ibiza Music Museum, a chain of music-themed hotels, an ambitious educational project with a notable presence in Latin America. When will it all happen? Are you brave enough to give – if not precise, then approximate – dates for when this IMC will turn into something more palpable? No, it will be the sector itself which determines the steps to be taken at each moment and, what is more, I believe that it will all happen in a natural way. In any case, which one of them would you like to see up and running as president of the public body that will back the IMC, in the event that you are not reelected in next year's elections? All of them. Research is a very important area. To offer quality training on the island run by professionals from the leading companies in the industry, such as Sony or Pioneer, would be a privilege for Ibiza. I believe that training is, with-

Si un proyecto de club o sala de concierto se presenta y reúne todos los requisitos exigidos, dispone de todos los permisos locales e insulares, evidentemente se tiene que autorizar y se autorizaría. Creo que la formación, sin duda, es una de las vacas importantes de todo este proyecto.

Dies ist ein Punkt, der von jeder Gemeinde direkt geregelt wird, da sie am besten wissen, wo derartige Veranstaltungen unter welchen Bedingungen organisiert werden können. Jedoch muss man auch verstehen, dass sich bei dieser Art Unterhaltung möglicherweise Interessenkonflikte ergeben können. Die Leute können gerne tanzen, Musik hören und Spaß haben, aber all dies muss in einem harmonischen und kontrollierten Rahmen stattfinden, um Freizeit mit Erholung vereinbaren zu können. Es sollte gewisse Grenzen geben, was nicht bedeutet, dass es jetzt weniger oder mehr Veranstaltungen geben wird. Wenn ein Club oder Konzertveranstalter uns seine Projekte mitteilt und diese alle Vorgaben erfüllen bzw. alle erforderlichen Genehmigungen eingeholt wurden, kann die Durchführung selbstverständlich nicht verweigert werden. Lassen Sie uns bitte noch einmal auf den Musik Cluster zurückkommen. Es sind viele andere Projekte angedacht, wie z.B. das IbizaMusikmuseum, eine Musikhotelkette, ein ambitioniertes Bildungsprojekt mit einer starken Präsenz in Lateinamerika. Doch wann wird das alles umgesetzt werden? Könnte man nicht einen ungefähren Zeitraum angeben, damit im Zuge des IMC aussagekräftigere Daten präsentiert werden? Nein, die Branche bestimmt selbst, welche Maßnahmen zu treffen sind und wie vorgegangen wird. Ich glaube, dass alles seinen natürlichen Lauf nehmen wird. Welche der Branchen würden Sie gerne als Nachfolger zur Präsidentschaft des IMC unterstützen, für den Fall das Sie bei den Wahlen im nächsten Jahr nicht wieder gewählt werden? Alle. Wobei die Forschung besonders wichtig ist. Die Möglichkeit anspruchsvolle Fortbildungsmaßnahmen mit Profis von führenden Unternehmen, wie z.B. Sony oder Pioneer, durchführen zu können, wäre ein Privileg für Ibiza. Ich glaube, dass die Aus- und Weiterbildung zweifellos ein wichtiger Punkt dieses Projektes ist. Abschließend möchte ich gerne noch wissen, welches der beste Soundtrack zum IMC wäre. „Mediterráneo“ von Serrat, weil er hier produziert wurde. ll-accustomed to the dark legends of his excesses, the nakedness of the backdrop to Pete Doherty’s return to Ibiza Rocks Bar in Sant Antoni was surprising. Doherty was one of the artists who raised the bar on a project that began in 2005 and came back in 2006 in a concert that went over the top and included the destruction of furniture. On this occasion, however, Pete offered an intimate concert, accompanied solely by his guitar, with which he went through an acoustic set of some of his solo numbers and also songs from his former bands, The Libertines and Babyshambles. 

world, Ultra Music Festival, DJs Feed me and the veteran Pete Tong were followed by one of our favourite regular artists, John Digweed, who was in charge of a bringing a night full of joy, dance, colour and great music took a close. On Sunday, it was up to Elio Riso to open Flight Club, demonstrating once again why he is one of the most popular residents in Space. With the whole crowd on its feet, another one of the summer’s residents, Wally López, arrived with his typical warmth and musical taste and showed he’s in touch with the party’s spirit, as ever. Immediately afterwards, the artist that everyone was waiting for, our untiring Carl Cox, won the public over with the energy we’ve come to expect from himin a great set that brought one of the evening’s biggest ovations. The high point of the night was to arrive with the intro leading up to Steve Lawler’s set which had the crowd right behind him. The combination of special effects, lighting and the performances of Foc i Fum turned the moment into something special that will be remembered for a very, very long time. Those present were able to carry on enjoying the music of artists such as Tiefschwarz and Chris Liebing - among others in the six rooms along with the great Carl Cox’s second, deeper set in the discotheque. 

El domingo Elio Riso fue el encargado de abrir el Flight Club, demostrando una vez más, porqué es uno de los residentes con más proyección de Space. Con todo el mundo animado llegó otro de los residentes de este verano, Wally López que, con su simpatía y gusto musical, siempre conecta con el espíritu de la fiesta. Inmediatamente después, el gran esperado de la tarde, nuestro incombustible Carl Cox, con la energía que siempre le caracteriza, se metió al público en el bolsillo mediante un gran set que fue de lo más ovacionado, el momento más álgido de la noche llegaría con la intro previa al set de Steve Lawler con el público completamente entregado. La coordinación de efectos especiales, iluminación y las perfomances de Foc i Fum hicieron de ese momento algo especial que se recordará durante mucho, mucho tiempo. Todos los asistentes siguieron disfrutando, en las seis salas, de la música de artistas como Tiefschwarz y Chris Liebing entre otros, además del segundo set, más contundente, del gran Carl Cox en la discoteca. 

Am Sonntag durfte Elio Riso den Flight Club eröffnen, dies zeigt einmal mehr, das er einer der Residents mit dem besten Ruf im Space ist. Ein anderer Resident dieses Sommers, Wally Lopez, schaffte es mit seiner sympathischen Ausstrahlung und seinem Musikgeschmack immer wieder die Gäste zu verzaubern und eine ganz besondere Stimmung zu erzeugen. Der unvergleichliche Carl Cox wurde wie immer mit Spannung erwartet, die Energie, die typisch für ihn ist, sprang durch sein großartiges Set auf die Tanzwütigen über und riss diese zu wahren Beifallsstürmen hin. Der coolste Moment der Nacht war aber garantiert das Intro vor dem Set von Steve Lawler, dem das Publikum sich komplett auslieferte. Die Koordination der Spezial- und Lichteffekte und die Performances von Foc i Fum sind etwas ganz besonderes und wurden für alle Gäste zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis. Alle waren auch von der Musik von Tiefschwarz, Chris Liebing und vor allem vom zweiten Set von Carl Cox in der Diskothek, das noch überzeugender war, absolut begeistert. 

Mastiksoul began his career in 92, during a period when he divided his time between France and Portugal. It was there that he experienced the birth of a new musical culture which - allied to his strong African roots - gave his talent a unique style. How do you see it now that the party has moved from Thursday night to Friday? At the beginning, it was a shock. I liked Thursdays… Nonetheless, I see the change as something positive, like a prize for the great job done by the team of Be over the last two years. I imagine that you have heard about Ibiza Music Island. What do you think of the project? I think it’s an incredible project. I am someone that has alwaystried to bring music out of its exclusively nighttime environment. What are you working on? Tell us about yourcurrent or next projects My current projects arethe compilation disc, Global Underground, my season at Space and a new album for March. What does Ibiza contribute, as an artist, to your music, to your style? Everything. Ibizais the centre of my universe. It inspires me and makes me happy, which affects my way of playing and producing. 

Si no estuvieras fichado por Space, ¿en qué club de la isla te gustaría pinchar? En Space Eres una de las estrellas de “be”. ¿Cómo ves que la fiesta haya pasado de la noche del jueves a la del viernes? Al principio fue un shock. El jueves me gustaba… Sin embargo veo el cambio como positivo, como un premio al gran trabajo realizado por todo el equipo Be en los dos últimos años. Imagino que has oído hablar del Ibiza Music Island. ¿Qué te parece el proyecto? Me parece un proyecto increíble. Soy una persona que siempre ha buscado que la música salga del ámbito exclusivo de la noche. ¿En qué andas? Háblanos de tus proyectos actuales o más inmediatos Mis proyectos actuales son el recopilatorio Global Underground, mi temporada en Space y un nuevo álbum para marzo. ¿Qué te aporta Ibiza como artista, a tu música, a tu estilo? Todo. Ibiza es el centro de mi universo. Mi inspira y me hace feliz, lo que afecta a mi manera de pinchar y de producir. 

Eigentlich nie, ich verirre mich höchstens beim Segeln auf dem Meer. Dein Lieblingsclub? Das „Space" Wenn Du nicht im Space auflegen könntest, in welchem Klub würdest Du es dann am liebsten tun? Im „Space“ Du bist einer der Stars des „be“. Was denkst Du darüber, dass die Party von Donnerstag auf Freitag verlegt wurde? Anfangs war es ein Schock. Der Donnerstag hat mir gefallen... andererseits sehe ich die Veränderung auch als positiv an, als Preis für die großartige Arbeit, die die Truppe des be@space in den letzten beiden Jahren geleistet hat. Wie gefällt Dir das Projekt "Ibiza Music Island"? Das Projekt scheint toll zu sein. Ich bin immer auf der Suche nach exklusiver Musik. Lass uns ein bisschen über Deine aktuellen und zukünftigen Projekte sprechen. Meine aktuellen Projekte sind der Sampler Global Underground, meine Saison im Space und im März kommt ein neues Album. Was bringt Ibiza Dir als Künstler, Deiner Musik und Deinem Stil? Unheimlich viel. Ibiza ist das Zentrum meines Universums. Hier bekomme ich Inspiration, hier bin ich glücklich, was sich natürlich auf meine Art, aufzulegen und zu produzieren, auswirkt.

afel Tur Costa (Santa Eulària del Riu, 1927) has been lucky enough to have lived – for almost four decades – in a house designed by Erwin Broner, the German architect who fell in love with a beautiful, resplendent Eivissa. Like the country houses that captivated travellers in the XXth century. The illustrious Ibicencan painter lives and works too in this property situated in an urban zone of Jesús, no distance from Ibiza Town. «We enjoy absolute freedom of movement here. We’re able to relish the light and the space», says ‘Gabrielet’ in his existential and professional redoubt. His place is a spacious, comfortable and functional home. It’s nice. Just the place to put down roots: «Broner’s interior decor is magnificent», declares the artist, highly enthusiastic about his cosy Mediterranean nook. Beside

El ilustre pintor ibicenco reside y también trabaja en este inmueble situado en el núcleo urbano de la parroquia de Jesús, a escasa distancia de Vila. «Aquí gozamos de absoluta libertad de movimientos. Podemos disfrutar de la luz y el espacio», dice ‘Gabrielet’ en su reducto existencial y profesional. El suyo es un hogar amplio, cómodo y funcional. Da gusto. Un sitio ideal para echar raíces: «El interiorismo de Broner es magnífico», proclama el artista, entusiasmado con su coqueto rincón mediterráneo. Junto a él, la ceramista ger-

Der bekannte deutsche Architekt war ein glühender Verehrer der weißen Insel und gefesselt von ihrer Schönheit. In ähnlicher Weise werden auch schon seit dem zwanzigsten Jahrhundert viele Besucher vom strahlenden Anblick seines Werkes verzaubert. Der berühmte ibizenkische Maler Tur Costa wohnt und arbeitet in diesem in der Gemeinde Jesús nur unweit der Stadt Ibiza gelegenem Gebäude. „Hier haben wir vollständige Bewegungsfreiheit. Wir können das Licht und den Freiraum ganz und gar genießen“, erklärt „Gabrielet“ über sein Zuhause und seine Arbeitsstätte. Das Haus ist geräumig, komfortabel und funktionell. Es ist einfach ge-

him, the German potter Anneliese Witt, his wife and intellectual companion, doesn’t just limit herself to agreeing. She supplies a piece of information that leaves no room for doubt as to the quality and pragmatism of this smart, easilyaccessible building, located on the outskirts of a village that is already tiny itself. «You feel really at ease», she states. The Tur Costa house was built over the course of a year that spanned 1970 and 1971. Its inhabitants are certain, with a touch of pride, that it is the last architectural project that emerged from the inquiring mind of Broner, who died without seeing the work finished. «I commissioned it», the painter recalls, seated on one of the rocking chairs in the cool salon. «Erwin didn’t even sign the plans. Raimon Torres did it because, as a foreigner, he couldn’t work as an architect here. He didn’t charge me anything as we were friends. So, by way of thanks, I gave him a Super 8 camera». Let us not forget that Broner was one of the people responsible for founding the first cinema club in the Pitiüses. «He talked about every detail with us, he really knew what he was doing», adds Anneliese. Broner asked Tur Costa to join the Ibiza 59 Group, but in the end he didn’t get to be appointed: «Shortly after suggesting it to me, the collective was disbanded. I ended up outside».

La casa de Tur Costa se edificó durante un año, a caballo entre 1970 y 1971. Sus moradores aseguran, con cierto orgullo, que se trata del último proyecto arquitectónico surgido de la cabeza pensante de Broner, que murió sin llegar a ver finalizadas las obras. «Fue un encargo mío», rememora el pintor sentado en una de las mecedoras del fresco salón. «Erwin ni siquiera firmó los planos. Lo hizo Raimon Torres porque él no podía ejercer de arquitecto en calidad de extranjero. No me cobró nada, pues éramos amigos. Así que, a modo de agradecimiento, le regalé una cámara de Súper 8». No olvidemos que Broner fue uno de los artífices de la fundación del primer cine club de las Pitiüses. «Comentaba con nosotros cada detalle, sabía muy bien lo que hacía», añade Anneliese. Broner le pidió a Tur Costa que entrase en el Grupo Ibiza 59, pero al final esta adscripción no se materializó: «Poco después de proponérmelo, el colectivo se disolvió. Me quedé fuera». Rafel ya era entonces un artista importante, de

Der Bau von Tur Costas Eigenheim dauerte fast ein Jahr (von 1970 bis 1971). Die Hausbewohner merken mit einem gewissen Stolz an, dass es sich hierbei um das letzte architektonische Werk Broners handelte, denn der Architekt verstarb noch vor Fertigstellung des Hauses. „Er hat es in meinem Auftrag entworfen“, erinnert sich der Maler in seinem Schaukelstuhl im erfrischend kühlen Wohnzimmer. „Erwin hat nicht einmal die Pläne unterschrieben. Das musste Raimon Torres machen, weil er das als ausländischer Architekt nicht tun durfte. Er hat alles kostenlos entworfen, da wir befreundet waren. Aus Dankbarkeit habe ich ihm damals eine Super-8-Kamera geschenkt.“ Es sollte in diesem Zusammenhang nicht vergessen werden, dass Broner eines der Gründungsmitglieder des

Rafel was already an important artist by then, prestigious and well-connected within the trends of his time. «Erwin was, in addition to being a great person, an extraordinarily avantgarde painter, a master of abstract». In Anneliese’s opinion, the influence of Antoni Tàpies and, above all, Joan Miró, is «evident». And, of course, he was always loyal to his style. The Bavarian designed the house in Jesús to be the spitting image of his own home-workshop in sa Penya, as can be seen in the report which Style published last month. Generous windows and sliding doors that allow natural light to stream in. «He was a great fan of the cinema and loved art. He never talked about anything else. He felt a real passion for it. The creative atmosphere of the Eivissa of that era – which was fantastic – was really different when compared to that of today. El Corsario, Ivan Spence and Carl Van der Voort galleries exhibited, just to name a few. At the current time, there’s a certain confusion. There are many painters, and some of them are really admirable, but that generation broke with the past, it changed history», argues Tur Costa while his dog plays around in the main room of the house. All of us, people and animals alike, affirm that you feel really at ease here. 

Destacan las ventanas generosas y las puertas correderas que permiten la irrupción de un chorro de luz natural. «Era muy aficionado al cine y amaba el arte. No hablaba de otra cosa. Sentía una pasión auténtica. El ambiente creativo de la Eivissa de aquella época, buenísimo, difería bastante en relación al de hoy. Exponían las galerías de El Corsario, Ivan Spence y Carl Van der Voort, citando únicamente varias. En la actualidad existe cierta confusión. Hay muchos pintores, y algunos son en verdad admirables, pero aquella generación rompió con el pasado, cambió la historia», argumenta Tur Costa mientras su perro juguetea por la habitación principal de la casa. Personas y animal corroboramos que aquí se está de maravilla. 

Rafel war damals schon ein bedeutender Künstler, der hohes Ansehen genoss. „Erwin war ein großartiger Mensch und ein herausragender avantgardistischer Maler, der ein Talent für abstrakte Linien hatte.“ Laut Anneliese ist der Einfluss von Antoni Tàpies und vor allem Joan Miró unverkennbar.“ Der gebürtige Bayer blieb seinem Stil immer treu. Er ließ sich bei dem Entwurf für das Haus in Jesús von seinem eigenen Haus und Arbeitsstätte in Sa Penya inspirieren, über das Ibiza Style schon vergangenen Monat berichtet hat. Auffällig sind die großen Fenster und Schiebetüren, die lichtdurchflutete Räume ermöglichen. „Er liebte den Film und die Kunst. Er hat ständig davon geredet. Beides waren seine wahren Leidenschaften. Das kreative Ambiente Ibizas der damaligen Epoche war fantastisch und im Vergleich zu heute wirklich ganz anders. Galerien wie z.B. El Corsario, Ivan Spence, Carl van der Voort und andere organisierten viele Ausstellungen. Heute herrscht eine gewisse Verworrenheit. Es gibt viele Maler, und einige sind wirklich bewundernswert, aber die Künstler der damaligen Zeit haben Geschichte gemacht und sie gleichsam verändert“, erklärt Tur Costa, während er mit seinem Hund im Hauptraum des Hauses spielt. Man merkt den zwei- und vierbeinigen Hausbewohnern schlichtweg an, dass es sich in einem während so einer kreativen Zeit gebauten Haus einfach großartig lebt. 

erhaps Santa Eulària River, the only watercourse in the Balearics, will never again carry the generous volume/flow of water it did not so long ago. It may never recover the current which resulted decisive for the economic and social development of this Ibizan town. Maybe that is what will happen, let’s not deceive ourselves. But at least we will have a new opportunity to contemplate, and, at the same time, admire the traditional way of milling flour - the basic element of bread - thanks to the future interpretative centre which the Town Council is organizing in the old house known as can Planetes. The recreated millstone will no doubt make up the main piece of an installation that will form part of an ethnographic circuit three kilometres in length – it takes approximately one and a half hours to complete – which will join up Puig de

Missa, the town centre and the mouth of the river, passing by the now-restored location. It is a “nice, ambitious” project, the municipal technician, Antoni Tur (‘Sendic’), points out. When the restoration works are finished, the river-powered mill at can Planetes will revive schoolchildren’s interest across the island and will also make it possible to attract tourists who are in touch with our popular history. And, let’s not forget that bread and sausages made up the staple foods in the farmers’ diet. The mill, as such, dates from the medieval era. The Catalans from the Quartó de Xarc had already documented it in 1235, although activity there is thought to have taken place even before King Jaume I’s conquest. It could go back to Moorish times. Man darf nicht vergessen, dass Brot und Wurst die Ernährungsgrundlagen der Landbevölkerung waren. Die Mühle gab es bereits im Mittelalter, das Jahr 1235 ist belegt. Allerdings gibt es Stimmen, die sagen, dass sie bereits vor der Regentschaft von König Jakob I., der 1213 inthronisiert wurde, bestand. worked up till 1962, after which it fell into a process of degradation that appeared to be irreversible. In the environs of Santa Eulària, close to the sea, six water mills operated, which is proof of the freshwater motor’s far-reaching role in the domestic economy. This system guaranteed good flour and superb bread. The Town Council discovered the ramshackle house in a «pitiful state. It was practically in ruins», Costa adds. After the house has been restored, the machinery to grind the cereal will be replaced to return this magnificent example of hydraulic engineering to its original splendour. During this second phase of works, the original millstones – which had been moved to ‘sa Fàbrica de sa Llum’ before they were finally abandoned – will be restored. Further, the irrigation channels will be dredged and tidied up to leave a farm that may be small in size but which is highly illustrative of the significance of the rural world in Ibiza. The water wheel – which has now been placed in an upright position – is a true copy in wood to substitute the old castiron wheel that was irretrievable and inefficient in current conditions. Burial of the overhead electric cables will provide some beautiful views of the parish church. 

Conquista del rey Jaume I. Podría retroceder al período árabe. La piedra de can Planetes funcionó hasta 1962, luego cayó en un proceso de degradación que parecía irreversible. En las inmediaciones de Santa Eulària, cerca del mar, operaron seis molinos de río, lo que da muestra del papel trascendental del motor de agua dulce en la economía familiar. Este sistema garantizaba una buena harina y un excelente pan. El Ayuntamiento halló el caserón en un estado «lamentable, prácticamente en ruinas», asegura Costa. Tras el arreglo de la vivienda, se va a reponer la maquinaria que triturará el cereal y devolverá el esplendor a este magnífico ejemplo de ingeniería hidráulica. En esta segunda fase de las obras, se procederá a restituir las muelas originales, que habían sido trasladadas a ‘sa Fàbrica de sa Llum’ antes de su abandono definitivo, y se limpiarán y adecentarán las acequias de una finca pequeña en extensión, sí, pero muy ilustrativa de lo que significa el mundo rural ibicenco. La noria, que ahora ha adquirido posición vertical, es una copia fiel de madera, sustituyendo a la antigua rueda de hierro forjado, irrecuperable e ineficaz en las actuales circunstancias. El soterramiento del tendido eléctrico aéreo facilitará unas bellas vistas de la iglesia parroquial. 

Ibiza, gestanden haben. Der Mühlstein von Can Planetes war bis 1962 in Betrieb, dann wurde er abgebaut. In der Nähe von Santa Eulària gab es sechs Flussmühlen, welche eine bedeutende Rolle für die Wirtschaft der Insel spielten. Sie garantierten gutes Mehl und damit exzellentes Brot. "Wir fanden das Gebäude in einem total verwahrlosten, ruinösen Zustand vor", so Costa. Nachdem die Wohnstätte renoviert wurde, machte man sich an die Instandsetzung des Mahlwerks, damit dieses wunderbare Beispiel für Wasserbau wieder in altem Glanz erstrahlen kann. In einer zweiten Phase werden die originalen Mahlscheiben wieder eingebaut. Sie wurden in die "Fàbrica de sa Llum" gebracht, um sie vor dem endgültigen Verfall zu retten. Demnächst werden die Bewässerungsgräben einer kleinen Finca in der Nähe gereinigt und wieder hergerichtet, um das ländliche Leben der Ibizenker zu illustrieren. Das Schöpfrad, das jetzt eine vertikale Position hat (ursprünglich horizontal), ist eine orginalgetreue Kopie des alten schmiedeeisernen, welches nicht mehr funktionierte. Die Hochspannungsleitungen auf dem Gelände sollen unterirdisch verlegt werden, dann bietet sich auch noch eine schöne, freie Sicht auf die Kirche. 

t may be pure chance – but either way it is an interesting coincidence: Raoul Hausmann, the inventor of the photographic collage, lived and worked in Ibiza, and in September 2009, the digital revolution in this technique was ushered in by Holger E. Dunckel, who also lives and works on the Island. It was Hausmann, Baader and Hannah Höch, above all, who pioneered and developed this technique. Kurt Schwitters, who created very individual types of collage using fragments of found objects, also made an important contribution. This method continued to evolve and was later used by Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol in their screen printing. Entirely in keeping with this tradition, Dunckel is exhibiting his latest digital photographic works in the KM5 art gallery. 

Dunckel, que también reside y trabaja en la isla, anunció la revolución digital de esta técnica. Fueron fundamentalmente Hausmann, Baader y Hannah Höch los que desarrollaron y consolidaron esta técnica. Otra contribución importante corrió a cargo de Kurt Schwitters, que acuñó con elementos descubiertos por él un tipo muy personal de composición. Más adelante, este proceso de trabajo se desarrolló hasta llegar a los elementos de serigrafía de Robert Rauschenberg y Andy Warhol. En plena consonancia con esta tradición, Dunckel presenta sus obras de fotografía digital más recientes en la «art-gallery» del km5 lounge. 

Cosima: “July’s going to see the introduction of our bar menu. It’s the ideal complement to the restaurant and furthers our core concept of informal dining. There’ll be new dishes including a lobster BLT and an amazing Caesar salad”. Cosima: «En julio vamos a asistir a la presentación de nuestro menú de bar. Es el complemento ideal para el restaurante y amplía nuestro concepto básico de restauración informal. Habrá platos nuevos, incluida langosta con bacón, tomate y lechuga y una magnífica ensalada César». No podemos olvidar la recién presentada hamburguesa de vacuno («... probablemente, la mejor hamburguesa de la isla», se apresura a añadir John), resultado de una receta procedente de una amplia búsqueda en Estados Unidos, nada menos. «Ofreceremos cócteles para el inicio de la noche, incluido el „mojito Aura“, una deliciosa conjunción de fresas y vinagre balsámico agitada en la aromática Havana Club Mojito Terrace para los que van o vuelven de la playa», apunta Cosima. Habrá un completísimo programa de eventos musicales nocturnos, y no hay que temer perderse una sesión: en la página web de Aura se ofrecerá la descarga de mezclas en directo de la semana precedente, cortesía de Absolut Vodka. Comida y bebida exquisitas, un servicio atento, una música excelente sin cobrar entrada y un nuevo servicio de minibús hasta la ciudad a un precio asequible: esa es la receta del éxito de Aura. 

Nachts wird es Musik-Events geben. The newly opened Marc’s Restaurant has all the ingredients required for an unforgettable evening. The weekly changing menu features original dishes with French, Italian and Asian influences. Of particular note are the fresh fish and the seafood in a salt crust. “Every Tuesday, we grill top quality prime beef from the USA, fish, prawn skewers and lobster too on request,” explains Marc Lindemann who, together with his new international team, conjures up the dishes. For those with only a small appetite, there are snacks at the bar such as pasta dishes, Nuremberg sausages and salads. Marc stresses that as well as fine Spanish and Italian wines, the wine list includes some very select French champagnes and wines, such as champagne from the vineyard belonging to the French fashion designer Christian Audigier and Faune chardonnay which was specially produced for the restaurant El Bulli, famous for its molecular gastronomy created by Michelin-starred chef Ferran Adrià. During July and August, the restaurant is open from 7.30pm to 1am. From September onwards, Marc will once again be offering his guests a lunchtime menu from 1pm to 3.30 pm and will be open in the evenings from 7.30pm until midnight.  CTRA. El recién inaugurado restaurante Marc’s ofrece todos los elementos para hacer inolvidable una velada. En la carta, que varía semanalmente, se pueden encontrar creaciones originales con influencias francesas, italianas y asiáticas. Un elemento destacado: el pescado fresco y los crustáceos con manto de sal. «Todos los martes ofrecemos carne de vacuno estadounidense de primera calidad, pescado, brochetas de gamba y, previo encargo, también bogavante a la parrilla», explica el chef del restaurante Marc Lindemann, que se saca de la chistera los platos junto con su nuevo equipo internacional. Todo el que no desee saciarse con platos copiosos puede elegir entre los aperitivos del bar, como pasta, salchichas asadas de Núremberg o ensaladas. Marc destaca que en la carta de vinos, junto a especialidades españolas e italianas, se pueden encontrar champanes y vinos franceses muy selectos, como el champán de la explotación vinícola del diseñador de moda francés Christian Audigier o el Chardonnay «Faune», producido ex profeso para el restaurante «El Bulli» del cocinero estrella Ferran Adrià, famoso por su cocina molecular. El restaurante está abierto durante los meses de julio y agosto de 19:30 a 1:00. Más adelante, volverá a ofrecer a sus clientes un menú del día de 13:00 a 15:30 y por las noches abrirá desde las 19.30 hasta medianoche. 

Wer nur wenig Appetit verspürt, der kann an der Bar, Snacks wie Pastagerichte, Nürnberger Rostbratwürstchen oder Salate bestellen. Marc betont, dass auf der Weinkarte neben spanischen und italienischen Spitzenweinen auch sehr ausgewählte französische Champagner und Weine zu finden sind, wie der Champagner vom Weingut des französischen Modedesigners Christian Audigier oder der Chardonnay „Faune“, der eigens für das Restaurant „El Bulli“ des durch seine Kreationen der Molekularküche bekannten Starkochs Ferran Adrià produziert wird. Das Restaurant ist während der Monate Juli und August von 19.30 bis 01.00 Uhr geöffnet. Danach wird es seinen Gästen wieder ein Mittagsmenü in der Zeit von 13.00 bis 15.30 Uhr bieten und abends von 19.30 bis Mitternacht geöffnet sein. 

Educado en España, ya formó parte del equipo del Grupo Tao y del Gran Casino Aljarafe en Sevilla. Cuando se degusta flor a flor este maki de flores, aguacate y carne de cangrejo, se siente inmediatamente en el paladar el aroma de la isla blanca. 

Bereits im Namen der Sushispezialität „Novum Flower Signature“ spiegelt sich die von Blumenduft angefüllte ibizenkische Sommerluft. Vernascht man Blüte für Blüte dieses Maki aus Blumen, Avocado und Krebsfleisch, so hat man bald das Aroma der weißen Insel auf der Zunge. 

Josep Marull and Ina Luber opened Café Matinal in Sant Francesc Xavier in 1988 since when it has become a reference point for quality and variety. A WINNER OF THE BENI TRUTMANN PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST. UN GANADOR DEL CONCURSO DE FOTOGRAFÍA BENI TRUTMAN

osé Antonio Arribas (Formentera, 1978) has the honour of having won three of the eight editions of the photography prize in homage to Beni Trutmann of the 2007, 2008 and 2010 editions organized by Formentera Island Council. This boat skipper and diving instructor at the Centro Vellmarí, discovered his vocation for photography beneath the waters of the Red Sea on a diving cruise he went on with a group of friends. “Even though I had always felt attracted by photography in general, it was there that I began to seriously enjoy photographing fish, coral, turtles and even a shark with a compact camera”, the photographer comments. Good results and his enthusiasm lead him to sign up for a photography course in Barcelona and to purchase a reflex camera with which he doesn’t stop taking photos “and learning” to picture every nook and cranny of Formentera. It’s a vocation that he practices all year long photographing landscapes, fauna, events, the island’s people and the sea bed, too, both in color and black and white, “since I like to experiment with all styles”. On seeing some of his photos I believe that we all agree that we are standing in front of the work of a professional, even though he considers it to be a hobby. “My computer is full of photos and I have always found it difficult to show or share them, I was shy in this respect until four years ago when I plucked up the courage to present one of them in the Beni Trutmann competition”, admits José Antonio for whom “the best thing about this contest is when they exhibit the photos of all the participants and mine and people remark on them”. Another of the things he emphasizes about the competition is the high level of popular participation, “We all know that Formentera is very small and that has its limitations when it comes to photography. How many times can you photograph the same fig tree? Well, when you go to see the exhibitions, there is always someone that presents a photo of the typical fig tree but from a totally new and original perspective which surprises you”. José Antonio Arribas cannot avoid referring to Beni Trutmann: “For me, he is a reference point for photography in Formentera, I have some of his books at home and I never get tired of looking at them. He was a genius”. 

Este patrón de barco e instructor de buceo en el Centro Vellmarí, descubrió su vocación fotográfica debajo de las aguas del Mar Rojo en un crucero de buceo que realizó con un grupo de amigos. “Si bien desde siempre me había sentido atraído por la fotografía en general, fue ahí donde comencé a disfrutar en serio fotografiando peces, corales, tortugas e incluso un tiburón con una cámara compacta”, comenta el fotógrafo. Los buenos resultados y el entusiasmo lo llevaron a apuntarse a un curso de fotografía en Barcelona y a comprar una cámara réflex con la que no para de disparar “y aprender” para captar todos los rincones de Formentera. Una vocación que desarrolla durante todo el año fotografiando paisajes, fauna, eventos, gentes de la isla y también el fondo del mar tanto en color como en blanco y negro, “ya que me gusta experimentar con todos los estilos”. Al ver algunas de sus fotos creo que todos coincidimos que estamos ante la obra de un profesional, pero él lo considera un hobby. “Tengo el ordenador repleto de fotos y siempre me ha costado mucho mostrarlas o compartirlas, soy un tímido en este sentido, hasta que hace cuatro años me animé a presentar alguna de ellas al premio Beni Trutmann”, confiesa José Antonio para quien “lo mejor de este certamen es cuando se exponen las fotos de todos los participantes y las mías y la gente las comenta”. Otra de las cosas que destaca del concurso es la gran participación popular, “todos sabemos que Formentera es muy pequeña y eso fotográficamente tiene sus limitaciones, ¿cuantas veces fotografiamos la misma higuera? pues cuando vas a ver las exposiciones siempre hay alguien que presenta una foto de la higuera de cada año pero desde una perspectiva totalmente nueva y original que te sorprende”. José Antonio Arribas no evita referirse a Beni Trutmann: “para mí es un referente de la fotografía en Formentera, tengo unos de sus libros en casa y no me canso de mirarlos. Era un genio”. 

Der Bootsführer und Tauchlehrer des Centro Vellmarí entdeckte seine Berufung zur Fotografie während einer Tauchexkursion mit Freunden im Roten Meer. „Ich habe mich für Fotografie schon immer begeistert, doch auf dieser Exkursion habe ich das erste Mal ernsthaft angefangen, Fische, Korallen, Schildkröten und sogar einen Hai mit meiner Kompaktkamera aufzunehmen“, erklärt der Fotograf. Der Erfolg motivierte ihn, an einem Fotoworkshop in Barcelona teilzunehmen und sich eine Spiegelreflexkamera zuzulegen. Seit dem ist er ständig inselweit auf Motivsuche. Voller Begeisterung fotografiert er das ganze Jahr Formenteras Landschaft, Tiere, Ereignisse, Menschen und macht Unterwasseraufnahmen in Farbe sowie Schwarz-Weiß. „Ich experimentiere mit allen Stilelementen“, erklärt er. Beim Betrachten seiner Fotos glaubt man, es mit den Werken eines Profis zu tun zu haben, doch er selbst sieht die Fotografie als ein Hobby an. „Ich habe inzwischen tausende von Fotos. Mir ist es früher schwer gefallen, meine Fotos anderen zu zeigen. In der Hinsicht war ich etwas schüchtern, bis ich mir vor vier Jahren ein Herz gefasst und am Beni-Trutman-Fotowettbewerb mit einigen Fotos teilgenommen habe“, gesteht José Antonio. „Das Beste am Wettbewerb ist die Fotoausstellung aller Teilnehmer und der anschließende Kommentar der Besucher.“ Erstaunlich ist die hohe Wettbewerbsbeteiligung der Bevölkerung, denn „wir alle wissen, dass Formentera sehr klein und dadurch auch die Anzahl der Fotomotive begrenzt ist. Da fragt man sich natürlich, wie viele Male man denselben Feigenbaum fotografiert? Aus dem Grund sieht man auf Fotoausstellungen immer wieder Fotos von besagtem Feigenbaum in einer anderen neuen und überraschenden Perspektive.“ José Antonio Arribas nimmt gerne Bezug auf Beni Trutman, da „er eine wichtige Referenz bezüglich der Fotografie hier auf Formentera ist. Zu Hause habe ich alle seine Bücher und bekomme nicht genug davon, sie mir immer wieder anzusehen. Er war einfach ein Genie.“ 

July: The winner gets a cockerel.

here are two festivals in July. On the 16th, seafarers and fishermen celebrate the saint’s day of the Virgin of Carmen with a procession of boats. But much more important is the 25th, which is when all Jaimes have their name day and the patron saint of the Island is feted. There are traditionally three highlights on the festival programme: ball pagès, tirada de galls and sa cantada. In ball pagès, the couples step into a circle of spectators. The women wear long skirts puffed out with lots of petticoats and blue aprons on top, red shawls around their shoulders and white head scarves with gold embroidery. Emprendades, gold chains with brooches and large crosses, which for generations have been passed down from mother to daughter, decorate their necks and chests. The men are more simply dressed. They wear white trousers and shirts, red sashes, black waistcoats, neckerchiefs and long red hats

Julio: un gallo para el vencedor

n julio hay dos fiestas. El día 16, los pescadores y los marineros celebran el día del Carmen con una procesión de barcos. Sin embargo, aún es más destacada la festividad del 25 de julio, día en que celebran su santo todos los Jaimes y se rinden honores al patrón de la isla. En el programa festivo tradicional destacan tres elementos: ball pagès, tirada de galls y sa cantada. Para realizar el ball pagès, las parejas saltan a la palestra ante la mirada de los espectadores. Las mujeres llevan falda larga henchida por las abundantes enaguas, encima un mandil blanco, pañuelos rojos en los hombros y tocados blancos salpicados de motivos dorados. Las emprendades, cadenas doradas con broches y grandes cruces heredadas entre generaciones de madres e hijas, adornan el cuello y el pecho. La vestimenta de los hombres es más sencilla. wei Feste gibt es im Juli. Am 16. feiern die Seeleute und Fischer mit einer Bootsprozession den Tag der Jungfrau Carmen. Doch noch bedeutender ist der 25. Juli, an dem alle Jaimes ihren Namenstag haben und der Schutzpatron der Insel gefeiert wird. Traditionell gehören drei Hauptpunkte zum Festprogramm: ball pagès, tirada de galls und sa cantada. Zum ball pagès treten die Paare in den Ring der Zuschauer. Die Frauen tragen lange Röcke, gebauscht von vielen Unterröcken, darüber blaue Schürzen, rote Schultertücher und weiße, mit Gold durchwirkte Kopftücher. Die emprendades, Goldketten mit Broschen und großen Kreuzen, die seit Generationen von der Mutter auf die Tochter vererbt werden, zieren Hals und Brust. Die Männer kleiden sich schlichter. Sie haben weiße Hosen und Hemden an, dazu rote Schärpen, schwarze Westen, Halstücher und lange rote Mützen, die kess auf ein Ohr fallen.

which fall jauntily over one ear. Men and women alike wear espardenyes made from braided hemp. The musicians start to play. The sound of the tambourine and flute, with the added cadence of the giant castanets, betrays its Arab influence. The dances also appear very unfamiliar to strangers. The young girls delicately lift their skirts and shuffle on the spot while the young men caper around them like cockerels. Tirada de galls is a game in which a wooden ball is thrown at pins. It is similar to bowling, with the difference that tirada de galls takes place in the open air and the victor wins a gallo, a live cockerel. Sa cantada is a round accompanied by a drum beat, in which the lyrics can be philosophical or crude, funny or sad. Now and then, the singer improvises and makes references to the spectators. Each individual performance can last up to fifteen minutes; the whole round often goes on until dawn. Ungewohnt für alle Fremden wirken auch die Tänze, bei denen die jungen Mädchen zierlich den Rock lüpfen und auf der Stelle trippeln, während die jungen Burschen wie Hähne um sie herumhüpfen. Die tirada de galls ist ein Spiel, bei dem mit einer Holzkugel auf Kegel geworfen wird. Das erinnert an das deutsche Kegeln, mit dem Unterschied, dass die tirada de galls im Freien geschieht und der Sieger einen gallo, einen lebendigen Hahn, erhält. Mit sa cantada wird ein von Trommelschlägen untermalter Rundgesang bezeichnet, bei dem die Texte philosophisch oder derb, lustig oder traurig sein können. But now as before, the old lighthouse stands on the edge of La Mola as it has for the last one hundred and fifty years. And since the end of the 1980s, Javier Pérez de Arévalo has lived in the buildings next door. In the mornings, the man from Burgos carries out his duties as custodian of the light, in the afternoons he composes contemporary music. One of his CDs is called Virot, named after La Mola’s shearwaters. The lighthouse keeper gets his inspiration from the sound of the birds, the sea and the wind – and also from the silence at the end of the Island. A composition overlaid with original sounds recorded around the lighthouse received its premiere at the Hackesche Hoftheater in Berlin. It is called ‘Soledades – a lighthouse concert’. Soledad – solitude? Well yes, Javier agrees, the summers are noisy, but in the winter, peace is restored: “Formentera then reveals its true magic again.” It is now summer. High season.
