e find ourselves on the cusp of a new decade. In order to keep our finger on the pulse of the times, it is important to be open to everything new. Innovation and technical progress, above all in the area of online media, and changes in consumer behaviour are creating new requirements. For just this reason we have been preparing ourselves for the multimedia age over the past months. Here, our aim is to create a win-win situation between print and digital media for both our clients and our readers. Even though the path of transition from pure print media to a multimedia format is a bumpy one, and one which – particularly at the current time – involves risks and no small investment, we are going down this path with enthusiasm and a sense of hope. In parallel with its printed edition, IBIZA & FORMENTERA STYLE is going online with a new look, and from January 2010 will be offering digital text, photographs, audio and video, and also booking facilities in real time. Working together with STAMPFWERK, one of the best known independent TV and film producers, we shall also be taking care of new productions and TV formats in Spain, and particularly in Ibiza. So the New Year will have an exciting start for us – and also for you too, dear readers. With this glimpse into the future, I wish you all a peaceful holiday and a happy, healthy and successful 2010!

riginally from a small town in the northern part of Denmark, London based fashion photographer Anders Brogaard now has the world as his everyday work space. Recent years have brought him to places like New York, Cape Town, Barcelona and many other spots, but the place closest to his heart is Ibiza. "Ever since my best friend Bo Bendtsen, owner of Cuckoo Club London, introduced me to the beautiful island, I have been coming back to enjoy the many great beaches, restaurants and I have met so many new and interesting people." Anders Brogaard is founder and owner of a large studio in Denmark where three photographers work under his name. One of them is known to Ibiza Style Magazine readers as the artist behind the cover of the first edition of 2009, Mikkel Petersen. Anders Brogaard will be back in Ibiza to shoot new stories and have more adventures in 2010

riginalmente de un pueblo pequeño en el norte de Dinamarca y residente en Londres, el fotógrafo de moda Anders Brogaard tiene al mundo como su espacio de trabajo cotidiano. Los últimos años le han llevado a lugares como New York, Cape Town, Barcelona y muchos más pero el lugar más cerca a su corazón es Ibiza. “Desde que mi mejor amigo, Bo Bendtsen, propietario del Cuckoo Club London, me presentó a la isla bella, llevo tiempo yendo y viniendo para gozar de las muchas playas estupendas, los restaurantes y he conocido tanta gente nueva e interesante”. Anders Brogaard es fundador y propietario de un estudio grande en Dinamarca donde tres fotógrafos trabajan bajo su nombre. Uno de ellos es conocido por los lectores de Ibiza Style Magazine como el artista responsable para la portada del primer ejemplar de 2009, Mikkel Petersen. Anders Brogaard volverá para fotografiar más historias y tener más aventuras en 2010.

In den letzten Jahren hat er neben New York, Kapstadt, und Barcelona viele weitere Orte gesehen, doch sein Herz gehört Ibiza. „Seitdem mich mein bester Freund Bo Bendtsen, Eigentümer des Cuckoo Club London, mit dieser schönen Insel bekannt gemacht hat, bin ich immer wieder zurückgekommen, um die vielen tollen Strände und Restaurants zu genießen. Dabei habe ich viele neue und interessante Leute kennengelernt.“ Anders Brogaard ist Gründer und Eigentümer eines großen Studios in Dänemark, wo 3 Fotografen unter seinem Namen arbeiten. Einer von ihnen ist „Ibiza Style“-Lesern schon bekannt: Mikkel Petersen, der Fotokünstler, der das Titelbild der Ausgabe N°. 1 in 2009 gestaltet hat. Anders Brogaard wird bald nach Ibiza zurückkommen, um neue Stories zu fotografieren und auch 2010 weitere Eindrücke sammeln.

he last night of the season – known in the trade as ‘closing’ – always has particularly strong pulling power, especially when a club appears to be shutting down for good. The word had gone round: “Space is being boarded up they’re turning it into a supermarket.” “Utter and complete rubbish,” retorted Pepe Rosello, the owner of Space. “This is just a rumour being spread by our competitors!” Whatever the case, the masses were mobilised and came flooding to Space in unprecedented numbers. But then came the cold shower. From above. It absolutely poured with rain. The rumour-

os cierres (conocidos en el argot como «closings») parecen tener un atractivo especial que genera un poder de convocatoria arrollador. Y, muy particularmente, si se trata (al menos, supuestamente) de un cierre definitivo. Había corrido el rumor: «El Space echa el cierre, van a poner un supermercado». «Bobadas», replicaba el propietario del Space Pepe Roselló, «¡ese rumor solo es cosa de la competencia!». Sea como fuere, la gente acudió en masa y se congregó en el Space en una cantidad nunca vista hasta entonces. Pero luego llegaría la ducha de agua fría. Una ducha desde las alturas: se puso a llover a cántaros. Quizá en esos mis-

chließungen – im Szenejargon „Closing“ genannt – scheinen einen besonderen Reiz, eine starke Anziehungskraft zu haben. Ganz besonders, wenn es (angeblich) eine endgültige Schließung sein soll. Es kursierte das Gerücht: „Das Space macht dicht, das wird ein Supermarkt“. „Alles Blödsinn“, konterte Spacebesitzer Pepe Rosello, „das Gerücht hat die Konkurrenz in die Welt gesetzt!“ Egal, die Massen waren mobilisiert und strömten in noch nie da gewesener Menge ins Space. Doch dann kam die kalte Dusche. Von oben. Es regnete in Strömen. Vielleicht rieben sich da die Gerüchtemacher schadenfroh die

mongers may well have been rubbing their hands with glee at that point, thinking ‘now the party’s gone belly-up!’ Not a chance – quite the opposite. Was Woodstock a washout when the weather got bad? That’s when things really got going. On the club’s three-level stage were dancers in tight bustiers and suspenders shaking their booty, speakers that looked as though they were breathing fire and top DJs spinning the discs like there was no tomorrow. Canons fired confetti over the revellers and stilt walkers handed out roses. Just as blockade-busting aircraft once thundered over Berlin to drop CARE packages, so the Space crew now lobbed huge quantities of plastic macs out into the crowd. People partied until they could take no more. “You’re fantastic! Thank you so much. Adios till next year,” yelled Pepe Rosello to the revellers as the party finally drew to a close. 

mos momentos los instigadores del rumor se frotaban las manos de alegría pensando: ahora sí que se ha aguado la fiesta... Nooo... ¡ni en broma! Todo lo contrario. Mismamente, Woodstock no se suspendió a pesar del mal tiempo: eso no hizo sino desencadenar la locura colectiva. Aquí, en el escenario de tres pisos meneaban las caderas unas bailarinas tapadas solo con ligas y corpiños minúsculos, los altavoces escupían fuego y DJs de primera fila pinchaban a tope. Cañones disparando confeti sobre el público, zancudos regalando rosas, aviones a reacción atronando sobre el escenario... Como en otro tiempo hicieran los célebres bombarderos «Rosine» lanzando paquetes de primeros auxilios para la población berlinesa, el personal del Space protagonizó todo un diluvio de impermeables sobre el público. Y así, la fiesta continuó con marcha hasta decir basta. « ¡Sois la bomba! ¡Muchas gracias a todos! ¡Adiós, hasta el próximo año!», gritó Pepe Roselló a los fans como colofón de la fiesta. 

Hände und dachten: jetzt fällt die Party ins Wasser. Nee – denkste! Ganz im Gegenteil. Woodstock fiel ja auch nicht wegen schlechten Wetters aus. Da ging es erst richtig los. Auf der dreistöckigen Bühne schüttelten Tänzerinnen in knappem Bustier und Strapsen die Hüften, Lautsprecher spuckten Feuer und Top-Dj’s pichten auf Teufel komm raus. Kanonen schossen Konfetti ins Publikum, Stelzenläufer verschenkten Rosen. Düsenjets donnerten über das Szenario. Wie einst über Berlin die Rosinenbomber Carepakete abwarfen ließ jetzt die Space Crew Mengen von Regencapes aufs Publikum prasseln. Uns so wurde gnadenlos bis zum Abwinken gefeiert. „Ihr seid großartig! Ich danke Euch, Adiós, bis nächstes Jahr“ rief Pepe Rosello am Schluss der Party den Fans zu. 

IBIZA STYLE spoke to Sarah Main: It seems that you almost regularly miss your flights. How can you explain this? Firstly, I would have to say inappropriate flight times and lack of private jets! Secondly, it is a choice I make many times if I like the place where I am staying and want to spend more time there. I am actually in Melbourne now because I missed my flight!! Ha ha ha

IBIZA STYLE sprach mit Sarah Main: Es scheint so, als ob du regelmäßig Deine Flüge verpassen würdest. Kannst Du uns das erklären? Erstens sind die Flugzeiten unmöglich und ich habe keinen Privatjet. Zweitens mache ich dies auch teilweise absichtlich, wenn ich den Ort, an dem ich bin, mag und dort mehr Zeit verbringen möchte. Gerade eben bin ich in Melbourne, weil ich meinen Flug verpasst habe!! hahahaha

Did you find it was hard to break into deejaying because you were female? No, because I never saw myself as a female DJ as such. I focused on my music and doing a good job so the emphasis was not on my gender. When you want something badly enough, small issues you may encounter being female become insignificant.

Did you find it was hard to break into deejaying because you were female? No, porque yo nunca me veía como dj femenina como tal. Me enfocaba en mi música y hacer el trabajo bien así que el énfasis no estaba en mí sexo. Cuando quieres algo de verdad los pequeños contratiempos que te pasan por ser mujer carecen de importancia.

War es hart für Dich als Frau, DJ zu werden? Nein, weil ich mich nie als weiblichen DJ, als DJane, gesehen habe. Ich habe mich auf meine Musik konzentriert und darauf, gute Arbeit zu leisten, daher lag die Gewichtung nie auf meinem Geschlecht. Wenn man etwas wirklich will, gibt es genügend andere Probleme als das Geschlecht.

What advice would you give girls who want to become a DJane? Firstly, I do not like the term DJane. I prefer DJ. Whatever profession you do, you need to make sure you aim to be the best. That means dedication and lots of practice. Believe in yourself and do it because you have a passion for the music and the art form of deejaying. And lastly, don't focus on the female thing....focus on entertaining your crowd.

What advice would you give girls who want to become a DJane? Primero, no me gusta el término DJane. Prefiero DJ. Sea la que sea la profesión que ejerces, tienes que asegurarte que tu intención es ser la mejor. Eso quiere decir dedicación y mucha práctica. Crée en ti misma y hazlo porque tienes una pasión por la música y la forma artística de poner los discos. Y, por último, no enfoques demasiado en el tema de ser mujer sino concéntrate en tu público.

Welchen Rat würdest Du Mädchen geben, die DJane werden wollen? Erstens, den Ausdruck DJane mag ich nicht. Ich bevorzuge DJ. Egel welchen Beruf man sich aussucht, man muss immer sein Bestes geben. Das bedeutet Engagement und viel Übung. Glaube an dich und tu es, weil Du eine Leidenschaft für Musik und die Kunstform DJing hast. Und zu guter letzt, vergiss das ganze Frauending... konzentrier' Dich darauf, Dein Publikum zu unterhalten.

What do you like about the winter months in Ibiza? I love the winter months. I love the tranquility and the beauty of the island. I have time to catch up with my friends and focus on work such as production and new projects. I travel a lot in the winter and Ibiza is the perfect place to return to after a work trip. Even though it gets quite cold, I love swimming in the sea as the water is pristine and there is no-one on the beaches...pure bliss.... DJ, producer, remixer and style icon - Sarah Main is nothing less than a major international talent set for even bigger things in 2010. 

Es ist zwar ziemlich kalt im Meer, trotzdem schwimme ich gerne, weil das Wasser unberührt ist, es ist niemand an den Stränden... pure Glückseligkeit....

I'm walking, yes indeed… I

n Ibiza there are an astonishing number of charming paths to destinations, some of which can only be accessed on foot, and also some very attractive tracks connecting well known places and bays. Most of these footpaths are not difficult walking. Exploring its beautiful countryside on foot is one of the best ways to get to know the Island. Physical exercise and discovering unusual spots are the motives for this particular form of tourism. It enables visitors to get to know the Island, which in the past was almost entirely agricultural, literally from the ground upwards. Ibiza has a widespread network of forest tracks and country paths which lead to some of the most significant places of scenic and architectural importance. Maps and information can be found in tourist information offices showing a wide variety of routes graded according to three different levels of difficulty. There are untold secluded spots crying out to be discovered on glorious coastal walks, where one can bathe in inviting bays as well as paths leading into the interior of the Island which has changed very little for generations. 

n Ibiza hay una sorprendente cantidad de caminos maravillosos que conducen a destinos que en parte solo se pueden alcanzar a pie, pero también hay rutas muy hermosas entre las localidades y bahías más conocidas. La mayoría de estas rutas de senderismo no presentan un grado de dificultad especialmente exigente. Además, descubrir a pie el maravilloso paisaje es una de las mejores maneras de conocer la isla. El ejercicio físico y el descubrimiento de lugares recónditos y poco acostumbrados son los principales puntos fuertes de esta variante turística. De este modo, el visitante puede llegar a conocer a fondo la isla, que antiguamente vivía casi exclusivamente de la agricultura. Ibiza cuenta con una red muy amplia de caminos rurales y de bosque que conducen hasta algunos de los puntos más importantes en cuanto a significación paisajística y arquitectónica. En las oficinas de información turística se pueden encontrar mapas y material informativo donde se presentan las diferentes rutas clasificadas en 3 grados de dificultad. Hay un sinfín de lugares recónditos que están esperando ser descubiertos, desde magníficas rutas costeras donde de vez en cuando se puede hacer un alto en el camino y disfrutar de un baño en las sugerentes bahías hasta recorridos por el interior de la isla donde todo se conserva prácticamente igual que hace muchas generaciones. 

Körperliche Betätigung und das Entdecken ungewöhnlicher Flecken sind die Stützen dieser touristischen Variante. Es erlaubt dem Besucher die Insel, die in der Vergangenheit fast ausschließlich von der Landwirtschaft lebte, von Grund auf kennen zu lernen. Ibiza hat ein weit ausgedehntes Netz von Wald- und Feldwegen, die zu einigen der wichtigsten Punkte von landschaftlicher und architektonischer Bedeutung führen. In den Touristeninformationsbüros findet man Karten- und Infomaterial, in denen mehrere Routen in drei unterschiedlichen Schwierigkeitsgraden vorgestellt werden. Es gibt unzählige abgeschiedene Fleckchen, die nur darauf warten, entdeckt zu werden auf herrlichen Küstenwanderungen, wo man in einladenden Meeresbuchten ein Bad nehmen kann, bis hin zu Routen durch das Landesinnere, wo sich seit Generationen nur wenig verändert hat. 

nside the natural reserve of Imbassaí in Brasil, Fiesta Hotel Group will open a new hotel complex next June with an investment that exceeds $100 million. Called the Gran Palladium Imbassaí Resort & Spa, the complex consists of a total of 864 suites distributed in 19 three storey villas made up of different sized buildings. It will also have a dozen different bars and restaurants among other spaces. The design of the hotel is in perfect harmony with the attractive natural surroundings made up of coconut tree fields and characteristic rivers known as the “Green Belt” of the Brazilian region’s coast. The new complex was presented in the Brazilian headquarters of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the city of Sao Paulo last October 15th. The ceremony – which was attended by the executive vice-president of the Matutes Group and General Manager of the Fiesta Hotel Group, Abel Matutes Prats. Representatives of regional and local authorities, tour operators and businesspeople from the sector as well as other executives from the Fiesta Hotel Group were also present. The complex also houses an ultramodern spa and water-lovers will be able to choose from any one of the hotel’s four freshwater pools. Access to the beach, which is just a few metres from the hotel, is via a walkway over the river and a ten minute walk brings you to the most famous place in the area with a spectacular view where the River Imbassaí flows into the sea. From the sand spit you can enjoy swimming both in the river and the sea within the space of 15 metres. 

Al acto, al que asistió el vicepresidente ejecutivo del Grupo Matutes y Director General de Fiesta Hotel Group, Abel Matutes Prats, contó con la presencia de autoridades regionales y locales del país, empresarios del sector y touroperadores, además de otros directivos de Fiesta Hotel Group. El complejo también alberga un ultramoderno Spa, y los amantes del agua podrán contar con cualquiera de las cuatro piscinas de agua dulce del hotel. El acceso a la playa, que se encuentra a tan sólo unos metros del hotel, está conectado a través de una pasarela sobre el río y tras un paseo de diez minutos se encuentra el lugar más famoso de la zona con una vista espectacular donde el río Imbassaí emboca al mar. Diese Veranstaltung, an der auch der geschäftsführende Vizepräsident der Grupo Matutes und Generaldirektor der Fiesta Hotel Group, Abel Matutes Prats, teilnahm, fand unter der Beteiligung regionaler und lokaler Regierungsvertreter des Landes, von Unternehmern aus der Gegend, Reiseveranstaltern und weiteren Führungskräften der Fiesta Hotel Group statt. In der Anlage wird es auch ein ultramodernes Spa geben; Wasserratten finden vier Swimming Pools mit Süßwasser. Der Zugang zum Strand, der sich nur einen Katzensprung vom Hotel entfernt befindet, erfolgt mittels eines Stegs über den Fluss; nach einem Fußmarsch von etwa 10 Minuten kommt man an den schönsten Platz dieser Gegend mit einem spektakulären Blick auf die Mündung des Fluß Imbassai ins Meer. Auf einer Sandbank von nur 15 Metern Breite kann man hier einerseits das Bad im Fluss wie auch anderenseits im Meer genießen. 

On the first of May next, the second rock-themed hotel in the Balearic Islands will open its doors under the name Mallorca Rocks Hotel. It is the Hotel Fiesta Apartotel Trópico, situated in the district of Magalluf (Calviá). It is a complex of 328 rooms that, over the next weeks, will begin a process of refurbishment to become the rock hotel on the island of Mallorca. Its stage will be the scene for live performances by some of the best international bands of the moment, following in the tradition laid down by the hotel in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza Rocks Hotel, which has played host to groups such as MGMT, The Kooks, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, Pendulum and Vampire Weekend, among many others. 

Un complejo de 328 habitaciones que en las próximas semanas comenzará un proceso de reforma para convertirse en el hotel de rock de la isla de Mallorca. Su escenario será una pasarela de actuaciones en directo de algunas de las mejores bandas internacionales del momento, siguiendo la línea del hotel de Sant Antoni de Portmany, el Ibiza Rocks Hotel, por el que han desfilado bandas como MGMT, The Kooks, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, Pendulum o Vampire Weekend, entre muchas otras.

Mai wird das zweite Hotel der Balearen mit der Rock-Thematik nach Ibiza mit dem Namen Mallorca Rocks Hotel eröffnet. Es wird das Hotel Fiesta Apartotel Trópico in Magalluf (Calviá) sein. Der Komplex besteht aus 328 Zimmern; dieser wird in den nächsten Wochen umgestaltet, damit es zum Rock-Hotel Mallorcas werden kann. Das Hotel wird ein Laufsteg für die international besten Bands sein und verfolgt die selbe Linie wie das Hotel Sant Antoni de Portmany, das Ibiza Rocks-Hotel; dort sind Bands wie MGMT, The Kooks, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, Pendulum, Vampire Weekend und viele andere mehr zu Gast. 

n 1995, Marc Lindemann took over the Madrigal restaurant in Marina Botafoch, following its complete refurbishment. During that first year, Pierino Viero – the Italian celebrity chef from Hannover – was constantly by his side. Marc had previously trained as a chef in the early nineties at Ekkehard Reimann’s award-winning Clichy restaurant in Hannover. We have followed Marc’s career since his early days at the Madrigal – at first in a private capacity and later as a business associate – and we have shared many experiences. We have celebrated many events together, intimately with friends and also on a variety of occasions with our readers and clients. These have included a presentation of the first Madrigal music CD, the lavish ‘Blue Summer Night’ party to celebrate the restaurant’s 20th an-

En aquella época, durante el primer año contó con la inestimable colaboración de Pierino Viero, famoso chef italiano de Hannover. Anteriormente, Marc había superado un curso de cocina desde principios de los años 90 en el famoso restaurante Clichy de Ekkehard Reimann. Nosotros, por nuestra parte, hemos acompañado a Marc desde sus comienzos en el Madrigal, al principio a título particular y más adelante como socios comerciales, y hemos vivido muchas cosas en común. Juntos hemos celebrado incontables fiestas, tanto con amigos en nuestro entorno privado como con nuestros lectores y clientes en el marco de diversos eventos. Damals stand ihm im ersten Jahr Pierino Viero – italienischer Promi-Koch aus Hannover – hilfreich zur Seite. In Hannover hatte Marc zuvor seit Anfang der 90er eine Kochlehre im Sternerestaurant Clichy von Ekkehard Reimann absolviert. Wir haben Marc seit seinen Anfängen im Madrigal begleitet – zunächst privat, später als Geschäftspartner – und gemeinsam viel erlebt. Zusammen haben wir viele Feste gefeiert, mit Freunden im privaten Kreis, mit unseren Lesern und unseren Kunden auf diversen Events. Da waren unter anderem die Präsentation der ersten Madrigal Musik CD, die Riesenfete „Blue Summer Night“ zum 20jährigen Bestehen des Madrigal, mehrere Launchpartys un-

niversary, several launch parties for our magazine and, very recently, our dinner for the International Club de Gourmets de Ibiza. None of the guests there imagined this would be the last time that Marc would be looking after them. On that evening, Marc was on hand personally, along with chef Ulrich Mörner and his crew, to spoil us with a delicious range of dishes served with grace and charm by maitre d’ Jeanette Engelbrecht and her team. We have also had the pleasure of being involved in many other great events, including Ibiza Bike Week and the famous Poker Rally. The restaurant’s many regulars have been joined over the years by a number of celebrities, including Udo Jürgens, Niki Lauda, Eros Ramazotti, Udo Lindenberg, Lilo Wanders, Thomas Anders and Michael Schumacher. During his 14 years at the Madrigal, Marc has encountered “more intrigues than Mario Adorf in the film Rossini”. He is both happy and sad to be moving on, having sold the Madrigal to some nice young French people who intend to maintain its characteristic style. He’s going to be staying with us here on the island and will, no doubt, soon be surprising everyone with his new ventures. Ibiza Style wishes him every success and happiness! 

En ese momento, ninguno de los invitados podía siquiera imaginar que se trataría de la última vez que disfrutaría de la atención de Marc. En aquella velada, junto con su chef Ulrich Mörner y su personal de cocina, el propio Marc se ocupó en persona de deleitarnos a todos con un exquisito menú, servido a la perfección por la maitre Jeanette Engelbrecht y su equipo. Además, pudimos participar juntos en otros muchos eventos inolvidables, entre otros la Ibiza Bike Week o la famosa Pokerrally. A la abundante nómina de clientes habituales de la casa fueron incorporándose con el paso de los años diferentes personalidades, como Udo Jürgens, Niki Lauda, Eros Ramazotti, Udo Lindenberg, Lilo Wanders, Thomas Anders y Michael Schumacher. Durante sus 14 años en el Madrigal, Marc ha vivido «más historias curiosas que Mario Adorf en el Rossini», por citar sus propias palabras. Se despide del Madrigal con una sensación agridulce, ya que ha vendido el restaurante a unos agradables jóvenes franceses que tienen la intención de continuar con el estilo acostumbrado. No obstante, esto no significa que la isla y nosotros hayamos perdido a Marc definitivamente. Seguro que muy pronto nos sorprende con sus nuevos planes. ¡Ibiza Style le desea un nuevo camino lleno de suerte y éxitos! 

Marc hat in diesen 14 Jahren im Madrigal „mehr kuriose Geschichten erlebt als Mario Adorf im Rossini“, wie er selbst sagt. Er scheidet mit einem lachenden und einem weinenden Auge. Denn er hat das Madrigal an sympathische junge Franzosen verkauft, die das Madrigal im gewohnten Stil weiterführen wollen. Er selbst bleibt uns und der Insel erhalten. Schon bald wird er uns alle mit neuen Plänen überraschen. Ibiza Style wünscht ihm dabei viel Glück und Erfolg! 

nd now for the good news: Madrigal will continue to be called Madrigal and continue to be run in true Madrigal style. The new owners, Nicolas Amice and Thomas Cambou, confirmed this in a conversation with IBIZA STYLE. These charming young Frenchmen from Brittany are professionals in the gastro scene and have been coming to Ibiza ever since they were children. They have also kept the crew at Madrigal on and will simply be giving the menu a light French touch. The reopening under their management is planned for 20th December. From then onwards, Madrigal will stay open throughout the winter from 1pm to 1am. More information is available from Madrigal itself. Das versicherten die neuen Besitzer Nicolas Amice und Thomas Cambou in einem Gespräch mit IBIZA STYLE. Die beiden sympathischen jungen Franzosen aus der Bretagne sind Profis aus der Gastro Szene und kennen Ibiza schon seit ihrer Kindheit. Sie haben auch die Crew des Madrigal übernommen und werden lediglich der Karte einen leichten französischen Touch verpassen. Die Wiedereröffnung unter ihrer Leitung ist für den 20. Dezember angekündigt. Ab dann soll das Madrigal auch den Winter über täglich von 13 Uhr bis 01 Uhr geöffnet bleiben. Weitere Infos ab dann direkt im Madrigal. asa Colonial will also be open again this year throughout the winter. You can now enjoy a delicious meal not only in front of a crackling fire in the old finca building, as always, but also on the idyllic terrace. This has been roofed and glazed, in effect turning it into an enormous winter garden. During December, up until the 24th, the restaurant is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7pm. On 24th December, a Christmas menu will be served from 7pm. This is equally available on 25th and 26th December with an additional à la carte menu. Casa Colonial will also be open on the following days from 7pm. The New Year’s Eve dinner on 31st December is already fully booked, but everyone is welcome to come to the bar for the New Year’s Eve party and fireworks from midnight onwards. From 1st January 2010, Casa Colonial is open daily from 7pm, except on Sundays. 

El 24 de diciembre se servirá un menú navideño a partir de las 19:00, al igual que el 25 y 26 de diciembre, acompañado por la habitual selección a la carta. Durante los días siguientes, estará abierto también a partir de las 19:00. Ya se han agotado las reservas para el menú de Nochevieja del 31 de diciembre, pero todo el mundo está invitado a disfrutar en el bar de la fiesta de Año Nuevo con fuegos artificiales a partir de las 00:00. A continuación, desde el 1 de enero de 2010, el local volverá a abrir todos los días a partir de las 19:00, a excepción de los domingos. 

he year’s biggest climber has to be Playa d’en Bossa. Over the course of one summer, this beach has managed to change its image from total ‘no-go’ area to the coolest, hippest beach in Ibiza, with one stylish beach bar after another. In previous editions we have written extensively about Sands, where excellent cuisine at reasonable prices can be enjoyed, along with the engaging soul and funk sounds of Carl Cox. We’ve also discussed the exclusive La Plage, where high-society diners savour fine dishes beneath an African-style canvas roof. Finally, there is the Nassau Beach Club, which is enjoying its second year of success. The winner, however, is Ushuaïa. Here, they understood instinctively how to combine the ambience of a modern beach club with a hint of nostalgia for Ibiza’s hippy era. In the wake of fantastic parties with Armin Van Buuren, Sven Väth and Tania Vulcano, the high point was its closing party with Luciano, Marco Carola and Richie Hawtin. Luciano, whose film premiere ‘La Ruta Del Sol’ was moved from the beach to the nearby Palladium Palace due to stormy weather, has already achieved something of a cult following here.

Luciano, que a causa de la lluvia y las tormentas no pudo celebrar hace unos días el estreno de su película «La ruta del sol» en la playa, sino que fue necesario trasladarlo al vecino Palladium Palace, ya ha alcanzado aquí estatus de culto.

ormentera is best explored on foot or by bicycle. Visitors on motorcycles or in cars all too often miss the captivating nature reserves and the close contact with its magnificent natural surroundings. Of all the various footpaths, the Camí de sa Pujada, in particular, offers the best way of getting to know the island. You should be certain to take with you an essential bottle of water, a notepad and pencil, and if possible a camera. The path stretches out like a vein of stone covering a distance of 1,500 metres and joins up with the Camí Bell des Mola which starts in San Francesc Xavier and runs between Es Caló and El Pilar de La Mola. The relatively easy footpath allows you to experience the rocky coast to the east of the La Mola promontory with its typical multi-hued Mediterranean vegetation of dense pine and sabina woodland, and bushes of rosemary, juniper and rock roses. At various places along the route, the walker can enjoy a view of both of Formentera’s coastlines and of Ibiza and Es Vedrá. To satisfy our curiosity here at Ibiza Style Magazine, we asked Santiago Colomar Ferrer, a history graduate from the University of Barcelona specialising in modern history, who was born in Formentera in 1968, about the origins of the trail and its importance as a transport route for

i existe una manera imprescindible de recorrer la geografía de la isla de Formentera es a pie o en bicicleta ya que muchas veces, en moto o coche nos perdemos enclaves naturales fascinantes y en los que el contacto con la naturaleza se disfruta al cien por cien. Entre los distintos recorridos que se pueden realizar en la isla ligeros de equipaje, en el que aconsejamos introducir una botella de agua, un cuaderno, lápiz y si es posible una cámara de fotos, destaca el camí de sa Pujada. Esta arteria de piedra de 1500 metros de longitud y que constituye una continuación del camí Vell de La Mola que comienza en San Francesc Xavier, discurre entre Es Caló y El Pilar de La Mola. El camino, que no presenta dificultades en su recorrido, nos permite bordear el acantilado situado al oeste del promontorio de La Mola rodeado de una frondosa área boscosa de vegetación típica mediterránea y en la que abundan ejemplares de pino y savina, así como arbustos autóctonos entre los que destacan las matas de romero, enebro o estepa de diversas tonalidades. Desde varios puntos del recorrido se pueden apreciar las dos costas de Formentera y una magníficas vistas de Ibiza y Es Vedrá. Curiosos como somos en Ibiza/Formentera

Wie eine Steinader erstreckt sich der Weg über eine Länge von 1500 Metern und schließt direkt an den Camí Bell des Mola an, der in San Francesc Xavier beginnt und zwischen Es Caló und El Pilar de La Mola verläuft. Der nicht allzu anstrengende Wanderweg bietet die Möglichkeit, die Felsküste im Osten des Vorgebirges „La Mola“ mit seiner typischen Mittelmeervegetation aus dicht stehenden Pinienund Sadebaumwald mit Rosmarin-, Wachholder- und Zistrosenbüschen verschiedener Farbtöne zu erleben. An verschienen Stellen des Weges kann der Wanderer den Ausblick auf beide Küsten Formenteras, Ibiza und Es Vedrá genießen. the island’s economy, as for centuries the Camí de sa Pujada was the only link between the flat part of the island and La Mola. Right at the beginning, Santiago Colomar explains to us that the name Camí Romà (Roman road) which it has acquired in the last 30 years has absolutely no historical basis: “In his time, the historian Joan Marí Cardona had already confirmed this to be, to all intents and purposes, an exaggerated fabrication by a tourist guide in Ibiza. In reality there is no reliable research to back up this statement.” Colomar believes that the origins of the path go back to the Middle Ages. At the time, it was the only route connecting the flat and the higher part of the island. And so it stayed until the PM820 road was built in 1920, linking La Savina to the El Faro de La Molina lighthouse. Colomar continues: “When we talk about the Middle Ages we need to go back to the 13th century, as at this time the path was already being used by Augustinian monks. They founded their monastery in 1257 on the high plain of La Mola. Today’s footpath was their access to the island’s own natural harbour at Es Caló de Sant Agustí. They also used it to drive their cattle to water at Pou des Verro, having been granted the right to do so by Guillén de Montgrí in 1258.” It is assumed that the original path was much narrower than the one today, and that it was only towards the end of the 18th century that this well-travelled route was improved as part of widening and modernising works ordered by the rulers at the time, so that not only people, cattle and pack animals could travel along it, but also carts for transporting goods. Evidence of the widening of the path can still be found in many places today in the vertical cuts in the cliffs. Santiago Colomar adds that this work was car-

Antes de comenzar a introducirnos en el tema, Santiago Colomar aclara que la denominación que se le ha dado en los últimos 30 años de camino romano no tiene ninguna base histórica comprobada y solo se trata de “un falso mito, como lo dijo en su momento el historiador Joan Marí Cardona, inventado por un guía turístico que iba vanagloriándose de ello por el puerto de Ibiza y mientras no haya ningún estudio serio que corrobore esa teoría no podemos tomarla como cierta”. Para Colomar el origen de esta arteria se remonta a la época medieval y constituyó la única vía de comunicación y acceso entre la parte alta de la isla con la zona más llana y hasta la década de 1920 cuando comenzó a trazarse lo que es la actual carretera entre el puerto de La Savina y el faro de La Mola, la denominada PM-820. Según el historiador, “cuando hablamos de época medieval nos referimos al siglo XIII, ya que este era el camino que debieron utilizar los monjes agustinos que vivían en un monasterio ubicado en el llano de La Mola y que se fundó en 1257, para bajar al entonces puerto natural de la isla, Es Caló de Sant Agustí, y también al Pou des Verro donde llevaban a abrevar al ganado que poseían y gracias a un derecho que les había sido otorgado por Guillén de Montgrí en el año 1258”. El camino original se estima que era mucho más estrecho que el actual, por el hecho de que a finales del siglo XVIII los técnicos del

Bis zum Bau der von La Savina zum Leuchtturm El Faro de La Molina führenden Schnellstraße PM-820 (um 1920) blieb es dabei. Nach Ansicht des Historikers „beziehen wir uns auf das 13. Jahrhundert, wenn wir vom Mittelalter sprechen, da der Weg zu der Zeit schon von den Augustinermönchen benutzt wurde. Ihr 1257 gegründetes Kloster befand sich auf der Hochebene von La Mola. Der heutige Wanderweg war ihr Zugang zum damaligen in Es Caló de Sant Agustí gelegenen inseleigenen Naturhafen. Aufgrund des ihnen von Guillén de Montgrí 1258 verliehenen Rechtes nutzten sie ihn zudem, um ihr Vieh nach Pou des Verro zum Tränken zu treiben.“ Es wird angenommen, dass der ursprüngliche Weg viel schmaler als heute war und es erst gegen Ende des 18. ried out by prisoners from the ‘Ses Salines’ prison in Ibiza. “At the time it was normal for those in power to use convicts to carry out public works.” During the same period, the path was also paved with stones, which according to Colomar is a further indication that the path does not go back to Roman times. “The common assumption that any path paved with old stones must be a Roman road is as incorrect as for every Spaniard from Seville to claim that his mother was a Flamenco dancer and his father a bullfighter. The ‘Roman road’ theory is nonsense, and there have been no reliable studies to date to back it up.” According to archaeological research carried out by the former Consell Insular de Eivissa y Formentera, modernisation work on the path peaked around 1900 and was overseen by the highway engineer Pau Urduach. Santiago Colomar goes on to explain that Urduach and his helpers carried out a series of other improvements on the island, on the orders of the authorities of the time. For example, they laid the first drainage from the Estany Pudent lagoon, planted many vines, carob and fig trees and improved Formentera’s transport links. “Though they were not able to achieve their goal of establishing large settlements around the island’s churches, as the inhabitants of both Formentera and Ibiza preferred in the past to settle over a wide area, far away from the control of any kind of authority.” Along the entire length of the Camí de sa Pujada, the keen observer can spot small crosses carved into the stone, which leads Santiago Colomar to believe that they stem from the religious use of the road, as it was used by the faithful on their way to church and for carrying the dead to the old cemetery at San Francesc Xavier. Its route, close to the rocky coast line, short-

Esta modificación en cuanto a las dimensiones del camino se puede apreciar en varias partes del recorrido por los cortes en las paredes de roca de manera vertical. Santiago Colomar añade que en cuanto a la mano de obra para llevar adelante el ensanchamiento de esta arteria, esta fue realizada por presos que cumplían condena en la cárcel de ses Salines de Ibiza, “ya que los Ilustrados tenían como norma emplear a los presidiarios en la ejecución de distintas obras públicas”. En esta etapa es cuando se utiliza la piedra para cubrir la superficie del camino, por lo que Colomar vuelve a insistir en la inexactitud de que esta fuera una vía romana, “ya que afirmar que un camino antiguo por ser de piedra es romano es lo mismo que decir que porque eres de Sevilla tu madre baila flamenco y tu padre es torero, una tontería sin ninguna base mientras no exista un estudio fehaciente de que esta ruta fuera utilizada por los romanos”. La reforma, según estudios arqueológicos realizados por el ex Consell Insular de Eivissa y Formentera, pudo haber culminado a principios del 1800 dirigida por el técnico Pau Urduach. Santiago Colomar fügt noch hinzu, dass diese Arbeiten von Häftlingen des ibizenkischen Gefängnisses „Ses Salines“ durchgeführt wurden, „da die Machthaber für öffentliche Arbeiten zu derzeit normalerweise Sträflinge nutzten.“ Im gleichen Zeitabschnitt wurde der Weg auch mit Steinen gepflastert, was laut Colomar ein weiteres Indiz dafür ist, dass es sich nicht um einen Weg aus der Römerzeit handelt, „da die einfache Behauptung, dass ein mit alten Steinen gepflasterter Weg automatisch ein römischer Weg sei, genauso falsch ist, als wenn jeder aus Sevilla stammende Spanier den Beruf seiner Mutter mit Flamencotänzerin und den seines Vaters mit Torero angeben würde. Die „Römerweg“-These ist Unsinn, da sie bis heute durch keine glaubhaften Studien belegt werden konnte.“ Die Modernisierungsmaßnahmen erreichten entsprechend der durch das frühere Consell Insular de Eivissa y Formentera durchgeführten archäologischen Untersuchungen ihren Höhepunkt um das Jahr 1900 und wurden damals vom Baumeister Pau Urduach geleitet. Santiago Colomar erläutert weiter, dass der Meister und seine Helfer auf Anweisung der damaligen Machthaber eine Reihe anderer Verbesserungen auf der Insel durchführten: Sie legten zum Beispiel den ersten Abfluss an der Lagune von Estany Pudent an, pflanzten viele Weinreben, Johannisbrot- und Feigenbäume und verbesserten die Verkehrswege Formenteras, „obwohl sie ihr Ziel, starke Ortskerne rund um die Inselkirchen anzulegen, nicht erreichen

ened the distance between the monastery and the harbour of Es Caló. Santiago Colomar also stresses that very little is known about the Augustinian monastery: “All we know is that it is said to have been founded in 1257, that the monks lived by raising cattle and that they were allowed to cultivate the land in accordance with rights transferred by the Church.” The heirs of Berenguer Renard attempted to drive out the monks at the end of the 13th century, as they apparently paid nothing for using the fields freely granted to them by Guillén de Montgrí – one of the reasons why the church in Tarragona is also implicated in the closure of this religious community dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In 1993, the Consell Insular de Eivissa y Formentera of the time declared the Camí de sa Pujada to be a ‘Property of Cultural Interest’ (BIC), and it lies in a nature reserve classified as an area of special interest – ANEI (Area Natural Especial Interés). 

Formentera, “aunque no pudieron realizar su objetivo de crear fuertes núcleos urbanos alrededor de las Iglesias de la isla, ya que tanto en Formentera como en Ibiza la población prefería estar dispersa y lejos del control de las administraciones de turno”. Durante el recorrido por el camí de sa Pujada podemos encontrar varias pequeñas cruces talladas en la piedra que Santiago Colomar aventura podrían haberse esculpido debido a un cierto carácter sacro de esta vía que se usaba también para ir a misa y para trasladar a las personas fallecidas que se enterraban en el cementerio viejo de San Francesc Xavier. El porque se eligió ese trazado tan cercano al acantilado se podría argumentar en que acortaba las distancias entre el Monasterio y el puerto de Es Caló. Santiago Colomar apuntó también que sobre el Monasterio Agustino, “no se sabe prácticamente nada, aparte de que fuera fundado en 1257, que los monjes vivían de la ganadería y que había pobladores que trabajaban tierra cedidas por la institución eclesiástica”. Los herederos de Berenguer Renard intentaron echar a los monjes a finales del siglo XIII, supuestamente porque no pagaban nada por el arrendamiento de las tierras que les habían sido concedidas por Guillén de Montgrí con un carácter muy liberal por lo que la Iglesia de Tarragona pudo haber influido en el cierre de este enclave religioso dedicado a Santa María. El camí de sa Pujada fue declarado Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) en el año 1993 por el ex Consell Insular de Eivissa y Formentera y todo su recorrido transcurre dentro de una zona declarada ANEI (Área Natural de Especial Interés). 

Sein Verlauf lässt sich mit seiner Nähe zur Felsenküste erklären, denn auf diese Weise wurde die Entfernung zwischen dem Kloster und dem Hafen von Es Caló verkürzt. Santiago Colomar hebt zudem hervor, dass „kaum etwas über das Augustinerkloster bekannt ist. Man weiß nur, dass das Gründungsjahr mit 1257 angegeben wurde, die Mönche von der Viehzucht lebten und sie nach übertragendem Recht von Seiten der Kirche, den Boden bearbeiten durften.“ Die Erben von Berenguer Renard versuchten, die Mönche Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts zu verdrängen, da sie angeblich nichts für die Landnutzung ihrer ihnen vom liberalen Guillén de Montgrí zugebilligten Äcker zahlten – ein Grund, weshalb auch die Kirche Tarragonas mit der Schließung dieser der Heiligen Maria geweihten religiösen Enklave in Zusammenhang gebracht wird. Der Camí de sa Pujada wurde im Jahr 1993 vom damaligen Consell Insular de Eivissa y Formentera zum geschützten Kulturgut (BIC) erklärt und restauriert. Er liegt in einem Naturgebiet der Klassifikation ANEI (Area Natural Especial Interés). 

Dobló la esquina, cruzó la calle hasta la escuela de fabricación de guitarras Formentera Guitars y se sentó en la barra del Bar Verdera. Empezando por aquellos filetitos de pescado en escabeche que los locales denominaban «boquerones» y la ensalada fría de calamar, comenzó a dar cuenta sistemáticamente de la variedad de tapas que descansaban bajo el plexiglás. […] ¿Habría desertado Lu a Formentera? Y, en caso afirmativo, ¿por qué precisamente aquí? Lisa había dicho que desconocía el paradero de Lu. Después añadió que, aunque lo supiera, no se lo diría a Hamm. Esto le permitió a Hamm deducir que ni ella misma, otra Leo como él, estaba segura de si Lu no tendría algo que ver con el asesinato. Cuando estaba dando buena cuenta de su segunda San Miguel acompañada de mejillones con cebolla picada y pimiento, sonó el móvil. «Hola, soy Andy. No ha hecho falta buscar mucho: está aquí. Vive arriba en La Mola, como usted bien suponía, en una finca de lujo sobre los acantilados. Por lo demás, de forma comple-

He turned the corner, crossed the road by the guitarmaking school, Formentera Guitars, and sat on a stool in the Bar Verdera. And if so, then why here of all places? Lisa had said that she didn’t know where Lu had gone. And she had added that, even if she did know, she wouldn’t have told Hamm. From which Hamm deduced that, protective sister or not, even she was beginning to wonder whether Lu might not have had something to do with the murder after all. As he was drinking his second San Miguel to accompany the mussels with chopped onions and paprika, his mobile rang. “Andy here. That didn’t take long. Yes, he’s here, up in La Mola, just as you suspected, living in a luxury finca on top of the cliffs, all kosher and above board by the way. The neighbours phoned Milan to speak to the owners of

Das Lokal über dem Strand, wo man sich an manchen Stellen fast wie auf Diekerum vorkam, war fest in der Hand von jungen Italienern beiderlei Geschlechts, die dort unter der Zufuhr von Wein und Longdrinks ihren erotischen Baggerarbeiten nachgingen. Er fuhr nach San Fernando und schaute in die Fonda Pepe. Sie war nur noch ein Schatten der Kneipenlegende, die sie in den alten Tagen gewesen war, umgebaut und schick und teuer, wie sie nun daher kam. Er bog um die Ecke, ging an der Gitarrenbauschule Formentera Guitars über die Straße und setzte sich in der Bar Verdera an den Tresen. Ausgehend von den sauer eingelegten Fischfilets namens Boquerones und dem kalten Tintenfischsalat begann er, die unter Plexisglas ruhende Tapas-Palette systematisch abzuarbeiten. […] Hatte sich Lu nach Formentera abgesetzt? Und wenn ja, warum ausgerechnet hierhin? Lisa hatte gesagt, sie wisse nicht, wohin Lu gefahren sei. Und sie hatte hinzugefügt, selbst wenn sie es wüsste, würde sie es Hamm nicht sagen. Woraus Hamm entnahm, dass sie selber, Löwenschwester hin oder her, mittlerweile unsicher war, ob Lu nicht doch etwas mit dem Mord zu tun hatte. Als er sein zweites San Miguel-Bier zu Miesmuscheln mit gehackten Zwiebeln und Paprika trank, klingelte das Handy. „Andy hier. War ´ne schnelle Recherche. Ja, er ist hier. Und zwar oben in La Mola, wie Sie

the finca as they had visions of burglars or squatters. But the owner confirmed that Lu was living there with his permission and keeping an eye on the place...” Hamm had an unpleasant twinge in his lower stomach. It always happened when particular things reached a certain stage. Up until now, it had all been a great adventure that he could pause at any time, just like a DVD. Press the button and freeze the image. OK, his fall from the ferry had been a bit different, but that was still a rather hazy recollection. Up until now, he had been working undercover and trying to put two and two together. Now things were heading towards a confrontation. He would have to challenge Lu. What else could he do? Get the police involved? Not even the German justice system, let alone the Spanish, would take any action based on vague suspicions and wild accusations. Apart from that, he despised informers. And wasn’t there still the possibility that everything would be cleared up and turn out to be nothing at all? Not that he really believed that. But there was just the prospect, the last remaining shred of hope. Or should he phone Lisa, tell her about Lu and ask her to give her brother a call? She had maintained that he had switched off his mobile or thrown it away. Hamm couldn’t disprove this, as she hadn’t given him the number. Yes, he could ask her to come to Formentera. But he knew that there was not a hope in hell that she would work together with him, Hamm, to corner her brother. He would have to deal with the matter all by himself. “How do I get there?” he asked Andy. The man with the ponytail explained patiently the not uncomplicated way to the finca. Hamm noted down the turnings on the paper table mat which was conveniently printed with a map of the Island. Andy told him that he could not mistake the finca. No other property in the neigh-

Imagen fija. Bueno, la caída desde el ferry era otra historia, eso se le seguía pasando por la mente envuelto en una nebulosa. En cualquier caso, hasta ahora se las había arreglado para salir a flote y había intentado sacar conclusiones de todo ello. Ahora tenía ante sí una confrontación. Iba a tener que recriminarle un par de cosas a Lu. ¿Qué otra cosa podía hacer? ¿Meter a la policía en el ajo? Parecía cosa de ciencia ficción que la justicia alemana, por no hablar de la española, iniciara acción alguna sobre la base de vagas suposiciones y acusaciones confusas. Encima él no tragaba a los delatores. Además, ¿no seguía existiendo la posibilidad de que todo se resolviera y terminara en agua de borrajas? En su fuero interno estaba convencido de que no. Pero bueno, al menos como idea abstracta... La última gota de esperanza. ¿O era mejor llamar a Lisa, contarle el asunto de Lu y pedirle que llamara ella misma a su hermano? Ella afirmaba que Lu tenía el móvil apagado o que lo había tirado por ahí. Hamm no podía comprobarlo, ya que ni siquiera le había dado el número. Hombre, también podía pedirle que viniera a Formentera. No obstante, estaba seguro de que ella no iba a mover ni un dedo para ayudarle a atrapar a su hermano. Para arreglar todo aquello estaba solo ante el peligro. «¿Cómo hago para llegar hasta allí?», le preguntó a Andy. El de las trenzas le explicó minu-

Wie immer, wenn gewisse Dinge in ein bestimmtes Stadium eintraten. Bis jetzt war alles ein Abenteuer gewesen, das er jederzeit anhalten konnte wie eine DVD im Recorder. Klick, und Standbild. Okay, sein Sturz von der Fähre war etwas anderes gewesen, aber der erschien vor seinem Auge nach wie vor nur nebelhaft. Bis jetzt jedenfalls hatte er aus der Deckung heraus operiert und Schlüsse zu ziehen versucht. Nun lief es auf eine Konfrontation hinaus. Er würde Lu zur Rede stellen müssen. Was sonst konnte er tun? Die Polizei einschalten? Nicht mal die deutsche Justiz, geschweige denn die spanische, würde aufgrund vager Vermutungen und wirrer Beschuldigung irgendetwas unternehmen. Außerdem verachtete er Denunzianten. Bestand nicht immer noch die Möglichkeit, dass sich alles aufklären und in harmloses Nichts auflösen würde? Nicht, dass er daran glaubte. Aber allein die Vorstellung. Das letzte Tüpfelchen Hoffnung. Oder sollte er Lisa anrufen, ihr von Lu erzählen und sie bitten, ihren Bruder anzurufen? Sie hatte behauptet, er habe sein Handy abgeschaltet oder weggeworfen. Hamm konnte es nicht nachprüfen, da sie ihm die Nummer nicht gab. Sicher, er konnte sie bitten, nach Formentera zu kommen. Aber er wusste, sie würde einen Teufel tun, gemeinsam mit ihm, Hamm, ihren Bruder in die Enge zu treiben. Er würde die Sache ganz alleine durchziehen müssen. „Wie komme ich hin?“, fragte er Andy. Der Be-

bourhood was situated quite so close to the cliffs and had such a tall water tower. “Can you get to it without being seen?” “The best way would be to leave your car where the drive branches off, go round to the right in a wide circle and then walk up to the house straight along the cliff. But be careful, people have fallen down there before now.” Hamm thanked him on behalf of the company. “I’ll add it on to the next bill,” Andy laughed. “Have fun with the freak. I don’t envy you.” I could think of nicer things to do than confront Lu with questions that he doesn’t want to hear, thought Hamm. Another twinge in his stomach. Hamm considered the best thing to do next. No, he wouldn’t do any more today. Too much beer and too many tapas. He needed to be fit and rested – and above all sober – when he encountered Lu. He drove back to the hotel, helped himself to a nightcap from the minibar and sat on his bed watching television. On the first state television channel, a panel of greying aesthetes were waffling on about ‘Europe of the Nations – a mission and a challenge’, a subject Hamm found as riveting as Italian governmental crises, infighting between factions of the SPD and the pros and cons of being buried in an upright position. Eventually he sank into a merciful sleep listening to a shrill, incredibly large blonde contributing bizarre anecdotes about her love life to the RTL show ‘My Husband is a Bastard’. 

Pero cuidadito, no sería el primero en hacer una excursión hasta abajo sin paracaídas.» Hamm le dio las gracias en nombre de la empresa. «Que me lo carguen a mi cuenta», rio Andy. «Ah, y que se lo pase bien con ese pirado. No le envidio en absoluto.» Seguro que habría mil cosas mejores antes que hacerle a Lu unas preguntas que no tenía la menor gana de oír, pensaba Hamm. Otra vez aquellas convulsiones en el abdomen. Hamm meditó sus siguientes pasos. No, hoy no podía intentar ya nada. Demasiada cerveza. Demasiadas tapas. Cuando se encontrara con Lu tenía que estar descansado y en forma. Y, sobre todo, sobrio. Así que decidió regresar al hotel, se tomó del minibar el último trago de buenas noches y se echó a ver la tele. En el primer canal de la televisión pública, una banda de eruditos encanecidos desbarraba sobre «la Europa de las naciones como tarea y reto», un tema que le parecía tan apasionante a Hamm como las crisis del gobierno italiano, las luchas internas en el SPD o los pros y los contras de los sepelios verticales. Por fin, terminó de hundirse en un sueño reparador al son de los alaridos de una rubia que enriquecía un programa de la RTL que tenía por tema «Mi marido es un cerdo» con sus descomunales dimensiones corporales y sus anécdotas disparatadas sobre las intimidades del lecho matrimonial. 

Aber Vorsicht, da sind schon Leute runter gesegelt.“ Hamm dankte ihm im Namen der Firma. „Gibt einen Aufschlag auf die nächste Rechnung“, lachte Andy. „Viel Spaß mit dem Freak. Beneiden tue ich Sie nicht.“ Ich könnte mir auch was Netteres wünschen, als Lu Fragen zu stellen, welche dieser nicht sehr gerne hören würde, dachte Hamm. Wieder das Zucken am Bauchfell. Hamm überlegte sein weiteres Vorgehen. Nein, heute würde er nicht mehr aktiv werden. Zuviel Bier, zu viele Tapas. Er musste fit und ausgeruht und vor allem nüchtern sein, wenn er Lu traf. Er fuhr ins Hotel, nahm noch einen Nachttrunk von der Minibar und sah vom Bett aus fern. Im ersten Programm des Staatsfernsehens schwafelte eine Runde ergrauter Schöngeister über das „Europa der Nationen als Auftrag und Herausforderung“; ein Thema, das Hamm so brennend interessierte wie italienische Regierungskrisen, Flügelkämpfe in der SPD oder das Für und Wider der Senkrechtbestattung. Schließlich versank er unter dem Gekeife einer Blondine, die eine RTLShow zum Thema „Mein Mann ist ein Schwein“ mit ihrer erstaunlichen Leibesfülle und bizarren Anekdoten aus ihrem Ehebettleben bereicherte, in einen gnädigen Schlaf. 

Part thirteen Winter: Pigging out – the great feast

he biggest event in December is not Christmas but matanza, the feast that accompanies the killing of the pig. Every farm has a pig which they fatten up during the year; this has always been the case and will continue to be so for some time into the future. However, matanza is much more than just slaughtering a fat pig. It is a social occasion which brings the whole clan together, and furthermore it works a bit like a fridge. For outsiders, an invitation to a matanza is a great honour. But take care to get there a little bit late. The pig squeals loud and long, as it is slaughtered in the old fashioned way. Four men hold the pig down on a table, a fifth man wields the knife and the blood flows into a bowl. When it is all over, the men take the animal outside and divide it up. The women clean the intestines to make sausages. During all of this and afterwards, everyone eats and drinks, and in the past there would have been singing until well into the night. No hay granja en la que no se cebe un cerdo durante todo el año: eso es así desde tiempo inmemorial, y parece que así seguirá siendo aún muchos años más. La matanza significa mucho más que degollar a un cerdo bien cebado. Es todo un evento social que fomenta la cohesión del clan familiar, y además tiene la función de una nevera, ya que el producto de la matanza va pasando de mano en mano, y todo el que invita a otros vecinos a compartir el festín en su casa también será invitado por su parte. Para los foráneos, la invitación a la matanza supone un gran honor. No obstante, puede llegar usted tranquilamente con algo de retraso, porque el cerdo chilla a voz en grito y durante mucho tiempo, ya que se lo sacrifica a la antigua usanza. Auf jedem Bauernhof wird übers Jahr ein Schwein gemästet; das war schon immer so, das wird auch eine Zeit lang noch so bleiben. Die Matanza ist mehr als nur das Schlachten einer dicken Sau. Sie ist ein gesellschaftliches Ereignis, das den Zusammenhalt der Sippe fördert, und überdies hat sie die Funktion eines Kühlschranks. Denn das Schlachten geht ja reihum, und wer andere Leute zum großen Schmausen ins Haus holt, wird selber auch eingeladen. Für Fremde bedeutet die Einladung zu einer Matanza eine große Ehre. Doch gehen Sie ruhig etwas später hin. Das Schwein quiekt laut und lange, denn es wird nach alter Art geschlachtet. Vier Männer halten das Tier auf einem Tisch fest, ein fünfter nimmt das Messer, Blut fließt in eine Schüssel. Danach nehmen die Männer das Tier aus, zerteilen es. Die Frauen säubern die Därme für die Würste. Danach und währenddessen wird getrunken, geschmaust, und früher wurde auch noch bis in die Nacht hinein gesungen. Hatte ich eben vom Schmausen gesprochen? Because the pigs have been fed on figs, melons and cactus fruits, their meat is of an excellent quality, and what doesn’t get eaten on the day gets turned into sausages. To begin with there are the butifarra, black sausages seasoned with cinnamon and made in small quantities. And then there are the sobrasadas, made either short and fat or thin and long, flavoured with plenty of sweet paprika. Butifarras dry out very quickly, but sobrasadas will keep for several months. In the olden days, there was a belief that, as long as there were paprika sausages hanging from the ceiling, then all was well in the household. It only takes a couple of slices of sobrasada to give any soup a richer flavour. Still today, you can see construction workers downing tools at 10 o’clock on the dot and, quick as a flash, kindling a small fire on which to roast pieces of sobrasada on freshly whittled sticks. … and what’s more: fish in trees Some visitors to the Island want to know why the farmers don’t cure any ham. Anyone who has spent a winter on the Island already knows the answer: it’s too damp. Even in farm houses where there is heating, leather belts and shoes grow mould; hams just wouldn’t keep. The Formenterans have developed their own method for curing fish. They gut dogfish and rays, leaving in the bones, and soak them for four or five days in brine that is so salty that a potato will float in it. Then the fish are spread out and hung in the bare branches of a juniper tree next to the sea, where there are no flies. The salt draws the liquid out of the fish, thus preserving it.

Un par de lonchas de sobrasada son suficientes para darle sustancia a cualquier sopa. Aún hoy en día se puede ver a albañiles que a las diez en punto sueltan religiosamente la paleta, hacen un pequeño fuego y ¡zas!: fríen un pedazo de sobrasada pinchado en unos palos recién cortados. ... y además: Peces en los árboles Son muchos los visitantes que se preguntan por qué no hacen jamón los campesinos. Todo el que haya pasado algún invierno en la isla conoce perfectamente la respuesta: hay demasiada humedad. En las casas de los campesinos, aunque tengan calefacción, se llenan de moho los cintos de cuero y los zapatos: tanto más sería imposible conservar los jamones. Por lo que respecta al pescado, los habitantes

Auch heute noch kann man Bauarbeiter beobachten, die um Punkt zehn Uhr die Maurerkelle fallen lassen, ruck, zuck! ein Feuerchen entfachen und sich am frisch geschnitzten Stecken ein Stück Sobrasada braten. … und außerdem: Fische in den Bäumen Mancher Besucher fragt sich, warum die Bauern keinen Schinken herstellen. Wer jemals einen Winter auf der Insel verbracht hat, kennt die Antwort: Es ist zu feucht. In den Bauernhäusern, auch den geheizten, schimmeln Ledergürtel und Schuhe; Schinken würden also erst gar nicht haltbar werden. Bei den Fischen haben die Formenterenser eine eigene Konservierungsmethode entwickelt. Sie nehmen Katzenhaie und Rochen bis auf den Knorpel aus und legen sie vier, fünf Tage in eine Lake, die so salzhaltig ist, dass eine Kartoffel darin schwimmt. Danach werden die Fische

To make the dish ratjada amb patates, you need dried ray, potatoes, an onion, some paprika and a couple of strands of saffron. The remarkable thing is that, despite the fact that many farmhouses now have freezers, the Formenterans have maintained the old traditional methods of preserving fish and meat. de Formentera han desarrollado un método de conservación muy particular. Destripan pintarrojas y rayas hasta el cartílago y los dejan cuatro o cinco días en una salmuera tan llena de sal que hasta una patata puede flotar tranquilamente en ella. A continuación extienden los peces en las ramas peladas de las sabinas, precisamente junto al mar, ya que allí no hay moscas. La sal elimina la humedad del animal, por lo que puede conservarse. Si se desea consumir este pescado en salazón, hay que trocearlo y ponerlo a remojo en agua durante la noche. A continuación, después de secarlo bien hay que rehogarlo en aceite de oliva. Para el plato conocido como ratjada amb patates hay que añadir a la raya seca patatas, una cebolla, algo de pimiento y un par de hebras de azafrán. Lo asombroso es que los habitantes de Formentera, a pesar de los arcones congeladores que hay hoy en día en muchas granjas, han mantenido los métodos tradicionales para conservar la carne y el pescado.
