EDITORIAL TRANSDISCIPLINALIDAD EN EL DISEÑO DE LA LUZ

C

uanta más información vamos teniendo gracias a los estudios que realizan expertos en materias a priori tan alejadas de la iluminación de espacios arquitectónicos como pueden ser la medicina, la psicología, la sociología, la biología (por citar solo algunas especialidades) más convencidos deberíamos estar de que, en un futuro no muy lejano, diseñar desde el propio espacio arquitectónico, pasando por las luminarias y, el proyecto de iluminación, no va a ser únicamente una cuestión de tipo técnico. Desde el inicio, deberá contar con el conocimiento de profesionales de otras disciplinas en función del espacio, el uso, y el objetivo que se pretenda conseguir.

Trabajar en equipo con profesionales de otras especialidades que aporten sus conocimientos para conseguir un mayor bienestar en nuestras ciudades, hospitales, escuelas, oficinas, centros de producción, espacios destinados al ocio y al comercio será fundamental de ahora en adelante.

La transdisciplinalidad en el diseño de la luz es, sin duda, un valor añadido que puede ser clave en arquitectura.

Colabora en esta edición entre otros profesionales la Dra. Trinitat Cambras Riu profesora de fisiología, especializada en cronobiología con un artículos muy interesante que nos hace reflexionar sobre este tema.

Transdiscipline in Lighting Design

ll more information we are having thanks to the studies that there realize experts in matters a priori so removed from the lighting of architectural spaces since can be the medicine, the psychology, the sociology, the biology (for mentioning alone some specialities) more convinced we should be of which, in a not very distant future, to design from the own architectural space, happening for the lights and, the project of lighting, is not going to be only a question of technical type. From the beginning, it will have to possess the professionals’ knowledge of other disciplines depending on the space, the use, and the aim that should be tried to obtain.

Teaming with professionals from other specialities who contribute his knowledge to obtain a major well-being in our cities, hospitals, schools, offices, centers of production, spaces destined for the leisure and for the trade it will be fundamental from now on.

The transdiscipline in Lighting Design is, undoubtedly, an added value that can be a key in architecture.

Collaborates in this issue, among others professionals, Trinitat Cambras Riu, physiology professor specialized in chronobiology with a very interesting items that makes us think about this topic.

The luminary as creator of the domestic space It might not be apparent, but on many occasions, a luminary or a set of them become the representative image of a space; without it the space would not be the same. I am not talking just about aesthetics, even though it’s true that businesses and companies have turned their use of lighting into a distinctive feature of their brand. I am talking about the interaction we have with a space as a result of the luminary that was chosen to light it, how it influences our movements and actions, how, for example, it could makes us feel more disposed to work or to have a nice time. It is more of a psychological thing than an aesthetic one.

he inspiration for this article came to me when, in midMarch, I visited the masia de Can Serra, in Parets del Vallés, Barcelona, on the occasion of a “calcotada” that was taking place on its premises to collect money for its restoration.

Shortly after arriving, there was an exterior corner that immediately seduced me: On the flat plain in front of the main facade, just

before the ground slopes towards a small orchard, somebody, seizing the only branch of a tree that looked dead, had hung a small interior lamp, old-fashioned and rustic, made out of opaque painted crystal. Under it, was a simple table with chairs.

It brought to my mind the concept of the luminary as creator of the “cozy” domestic space. I am convinced that, without that lamp, the space would have not been the same, the quality it had would have

been missing; it was very inviting.

Even though the space was far away from the area were food was being served, there was always somebody there. As a matter of fact, it was practically impossible to take pictures, for it was never free.

The luminary, even though it was out of the mainstream, was the true star and creator of the space.

This was the same feeling that Jordi Badia, founder and director of the architecture studio BAAS, attempted to create in the

Y no hablo solamente del nivel estético, pues es cierto que algunas empresas o negocios, sobre todo en la restauración, han decidido convertir su forma de iluminarse en un distintivo de su marca; me refiero más bien a cómo interactuamos con un espacio en función de la luminaria que se ha elegido para iluminarlo, cómo nuestros movimientos y acciones pueden cambiar, cómo podemos sentirnos por ejemplo más predispuestos a trabajar o a pasar un rato agradable. Es algo más psicológico que estético.

L

a motivación para este artículo me surgió cuando, a mediados de marzo, visité la masía de Can Serra, en Parets del Vallès, Barcelona, con motivo de una “calçotada” que se celebraba en la misma para recoger dinero para

restaurarla.

Al poco de llegar hubo un rincón exterior que enseguida me sedujo: En la explanada frente a la fachada principal, justo antes del inicio de un desnivel del terreno hacia un pequeño huerto, aprovechando la única rama de un árbol que parecía muerto, habían colgado una pequeña luminaria de

interior antigua y rústica, de cristal opaco pintado. Debajo había una mesita baja sencilla y unas sillas.

Eso me hizo pensar en el concepto de la luminaria como creadora de espacio “doméstico”, acogedor. Estoy absolutamente convencido de que ese espacio no hubiera sido el mismo sin esa luminaria, no hubiera tenido

la misma calidad. Realmente invitaba a sentarse. A pesar de estar lejos de la zona donde se realizó la comida, siempre había alguien en ese lugar. De hecho me fue prácticamente imposible tomarle fotografías, nunca estaba vacío.

La luminaria, aunque desconectada de la corriente, era la verdadera protagonista y creadora del espacio.

Esta misma sensación fue la que el arquitecto Jordi Badia, fundador y director del estudio de arquitectura

BAAS, quiso crear en los jardines del edificio de oficinas Alta Diagonal, situado en el número 640 de la avenida Diagonal de Barcelona, cuyo proyecto de rehabilitación integral llevó a cabo entre 2011 y 2013.

Una de las premisas del proyecto, aparte de mejorar la eficiencia energética del edificio, fue urbanizar los espacios exteriores, abriendo el jardín, antes inaccesible, a la ciudad. Para éste diseñó, en conjunto con la casa Santa & Cole, unas luminarias que deberían

tener aspecto de luminaria de interior, pero debían de contar con todas las características técnicas para ser puestas en el exterior. El objetivo era el de crear esta sensación antes descrita de espacio doméstico, convertir el jardín en una especie de sala de estar.

El resultado ha sido un éxito. Una prueba de ello es que en ocasiones hasta los propios oficinistas hacen cola para hacer sus reuniones en el jardín.

gardens of the office building “Alta Diagonal”, located at number 640, Diagonal Avenue in Barcelona, when he carried out its restoration project between 2011 and 2013.

feeling of domestic space, transform the garden in a special kind of living room.

The results have been very successful. A proof of it is the fact that office workers stand in line to have their gatherings in the garden.

Interior lighting and emotions My motivation behind this work is to comprehend the emotional reactions that a person has when occupying a space, depending on the interior lighting of said space. Also, to observe how the different ways of lighting a space can have an effect, with attention to aspects like the formal relation of the luminaries and the space, or the chromatic relation of materials and light.

To study and understand why people react to certain shapes, and to verify if there are common patterns of emotional responses. The starting point hypothesis is: Does interior lighting have an influence in the behavior and in the emotional state of a person?

T

o discover the emotions felt by a person when present in an interior space, illuminated in a certain way, I selected fifteen images of different interiors and elaborated a questionnaire related to the images. The

questionnaire distinguished the sex, age, and education of the person answering.

For every image, six specific questions were asked: Three questions were measured in a range of 1 to 5. There was one question that specified the emotions by the selection of 4 types of pleasant emotions and 4 unpleasant. And finally

an open ended question to elaborate on any other emotion not covered in the questionnaire.

The questionnaire handed out and evaluated was the following: In total, 21 people answered the questionnaire, among them 11 females and 10 males. The female’s age ranged

between 14 and 43. The male’s age ranged between 20 and 52. The range of education of the people surveyed went from high school to university.

5. CONTENT OF THE RESEARCH WORK First, I will show the images and the graphics, with the answers to the survey.

Secondly, I will explain, with scientific concepts, my assessments for every image, completed prior to the survey.

Finally, I expound a general conclusion for every image, comparing the results obtained in the questionnaire with my preliminary results.

Preliminary conclusions (image 1) The emotion I get from Image number 1 is inspiration, because of the

predominant green color and the feeling of relaxation created by the coherence between the luminaries and the space.

Final conclusions After administering the questionnaire, I came to the conclusion that my preliminary opinions were consistent with the final results of the people surveyed. We coincided in topics such as the relation between the luminaries and the space, which obtained an adequate value; color temperature, emphasis on cool tones; the relation between color of light and materials, an adequate relation, etc.

Both males and females, emphasized a pleasant sensation, with a predominance of the emotion of inspiration for women

and a tie between inspiration and fascination for men. Other emotions that were associated with this image, in the questionnaire, were: tranquility, relax, etc.

Preliminary conclusions (image 2) The emotion that image number 2 evoked in me was intimate, due to the predominance of the color red in combination with the warm light, the rough texture of the materials and the space where they are located.

Final conclusions After administering the questionnaire I had the same results of the previous photograph. My preliminary conclusions coincide very closely with the final results

La iluminación interior y las emociones

El motivo por el cual he decidido hacer este trabajo es para comprender las reacciones emocionales que puede sufrir la persona que ocupa un espacio según sea su iluminación interior. Observar cómo puede afectar las diferentes formas de iluminar el espacio atendiendo a aspectos como la relación formal de las luminarias y del espacio o la relación cromática de la luz y de los materiales.

Estudiar y entender por qué las personas reaccionamos de una determinada forma y comprobar si existen patrones comunes de respuesta con las mismas emociones. La hipótesis de partida es: ¿Influye la iluminación interior en el comportamiento y el estado emocional de las personas?.

P

ara averiguar las emociones de cada persona ante un espacio interior iluminado de una forma concreta, he optado por seleccionar quince imágenes interiores distintas y elaborar un cuestionario referente a estas imágenes. El cuestionario distingue el sexo de la persona que está contestando, la

contemplada en el cuestionario.

El cuestionario repartido y valorado es el siguiente: En total se ha elaborado el cuestionario a 21 personas, de entre ellas 11 mujeres y 10 hombres. Las mujeres tienen unas edades comprendidas entre los 14 años y los 43. Los hombres tienen unas edades comprendidas entre los 20 años y los 52.

Y finalmente una pregunta abierta para redactar cualquier otra emoción no

5. CONTENIDO DEL TRABAJO DE INVESTIGACIÓN En primer lugar se muestra cada una de las imágenes y unos gráficos que muestran las respuestas obtenidas en la encuesta realizada.

En segundo lugar, expongo mis valoraciones mediante conceptos científicos para cada imagen, previas a la realización de la encuesta.

Finalmente, expongo una conclusión general de cada imagen relacionando los

Tanto en el caso de los hombres como en el de las mujeres, ha destacado una emoción agradable, donde ha predominado una sensación de inspiración en el caso de las mujeres y un empate entre inspiración y fascinación en el caso de

Final Conclusions After administering the questionnaire I came to the conclusion that this image is perceived differently depending on who sees it. The formal values, as well as the relation between color of light and materials, were not very clear.

The emotions evoked in the people surveyed were very different depending on the sex of the individuals. For females the image was pleasant, more specifically inspirational, while for the males it was the opposite; for them the image evoked unpleasant feelings, specifically fear.

Having obtained such extremes in the results of the survey, I have come to the conclusion that some images can reflect different moral values depending on sex.

In my case, fear was the emotion evoked by the image as a result of the aforementioned contradictions in form and, the lack of protection exhibited by the luminaries. Nevertheless, I believe that the feeling of inspiration comes from the association we have interiorized between the symbol of a lightbulb and an idea. Other emotions associated with this image were: imprisoned, oppressed, stressed, etc.

Preliminary conclusions (image 5) The emotion that image 5 evoked in me was fascination, as a result of the contrast created by the lower part of the image (dark) and the higher part (bright).

Final conclusions After administering the questionnaire, I came to the conclusion that my general preliminary results had not coincided with the general results obtained in the survey. I had graded the question from the formal point of view: the interaction of the luminaries with the space, with

Conclusiones finales Tras elaborar el cuestionario, en este caso, ocurre lo mismo que en la anterior fotografía. Mis conclusiones previas coinciden bastante con el resultado final de los encuestados.

Hemos coincidido en temas como la relación de las luminarias con el espacio, dándole un valor adecuado; la temperatura de color, destacada por unos tonos cálidos; la relación entre el color de la luz y los materiales, una relación bastante adecuada, etc.

Tanto en el caso de los hombres como en el de las mujeres, ha destacado una emoción agradable (80% y 90% respectivamente), donde ha predominado una sensación de intimidad. Otras emociones que han asociado los encuestados a esta imagen han sido: tranquilidad, acogedor, seductor, etc.

Conclusiones finales Después de elaborar el cuestionario, he llegado a la conclusión que esta imagen es muy distinta dependiendo de quien la observa. No queda muy claro su valor formal, ni la relación entre el color de la luz y los materiales.

La sensación entre los encuestados ha sido muy distinta dependiendo del sexo.

A las mujeres, la imagen les resultaba agradable, más concretamente de inspiración, en cambio, en el caso de los hombres era todo lo contrario, les producía una relación desagradable, de miedo.

Al haber obtenido estos resultados tan distantes, he llegado a la conclusión que algunas imágenes nos pueden dar un reflejo de los distintos valores morales dependiendo del sexo.

En mi caso, había contestado la sensación de miedo por la contradicción formal ya citada anteriormente, y por el hecho de que se muestren las luminarias sin ningún tipo de protección. Aun así, creo que la emoción de inspiración viene dada por la asociación que tenemos interiorizada con el símbolo de una bombilla encendida y el significado inmediato que este

Once again, we see the discrepancy between the feelings evoked in males and females. The males felt mostly pleasant emotions such as, fascination and inspiration. Females found it unpleasant, with emotions like indifferent or boring. The feeling of boredom could be produced by the repetition of the elements that form the space and because it has too much going on.

Preliminary Conclusions (image 10) The emotion that image number 10, evoked in me was one of fascination, as a result of all the brightness and glare that the image possessed. It is an image that produces many stimuli at the same time.

Opinions on color temperature were different depending on sex. Females expressed that the image was

characterized by a mid-value between warm and cool, males on the other hand, for the most part perceived the space as cool. We all coincided in the question on the relation between materials and color of lights, where a mid-value prevailed. On my part, I gave it a value

Final conclusions After administering the questionnaire, I came to the conclusion that my preliminary results were consistent with the results obtained on the test.

In my opinion the formal relation between the luminaries and the space is inadequate because there is no clear vision of where the luminaries are located. My results were not consistent with the general opinion obtained from the questionnaire; the majority believed that the formal relation was at an intermediate level. Regarding the chromatic aspect, my results coincided with the results of the survey in that there was a predominance of cool aspects. Furthermore, there was the common opinion that with so much brightness, the surfaces appeared wet (like after a rain fall).

In answer to the question about the relation between color of light and materials, my results were consistent with those of the test in grading this relation at an intermediate level.

Regarding the emotions, the majority of males had pleasant feelings, specifically fun. On the other hand, in the females the unpleasant emotions were dominant, specifically deception. Other emotions that were associated to this image, in the survey were: mobility, chaotic, confusion.

llegado a la conclusión que mis resultados previos no se corresponden mucho con los resultados generales obtenidos en la prueba. En mi caso había valorado con un valor medio entre adecuado y no adecuado a la pregunta desde el punto de vista formal entre las luminarias y el espacio, en cambio los encuestados se decantan más por un resultado no adecuado.

La temperatura de color ha variado bastante también dependiendo del sexo, el sexo femenino ha opinado que la imagen se caracterizaba por una valor medio entre el cálido y el frío, en cambio en el sexo masculino ha predominado una concepción fría del espacio. Donde sí que hemos coincidido bastante ha sido en la pregunta sobre la relación entre el color de la luz y los materiales, donde ha priorizado un valor medio. En mi caso, he puesto un valor de 3 ya que el brillo del techo combina muy bien con los tapices de los muebles, pero contrasta con los materiales como la madera de las sillas o las baldosas del suelo.

En este caso se vuelve a dar la discrepancia entre las emociones que han sentido los hombres y las mujeres. A los hombres les ha resultado mayoritariamente agradable, con sensaciones como la fascinación o la inspiración y a las mujeres les ha resultado desagradable, con sensaciones como indiferencia o aburrimiento.

La sensación de aburrimiento viene dada posiblemente por la repetición de los elementos que componen el espacio y por lo cargado que resulta.

Conclusiones previas (imagen 10) La sensación que me produce la imagen número 10 es de fascinación, gracias a la cantidad de brillos y deslumbramientos que tiene la imagen. Es una imagen que produce muchos estímulos a la vez.

En mi opinión la relación formal entre las luminarias y el espacio no es adecuada ya que no hay una clara visión de la situación de las luminarias. In my opinion, the formal relation between luminaries and space was quite adequate; the luminaries were correctly distributed around the room and were not excessive. My results were quite consistent with the general opinion obtained from the questionnaire.

Regarding the chromatic aspect, my preliminary results leaned towards cool tones while on the general results they opted for an intermediate grade.

To the question about the relation between color of light and materials, my opinion also coincided with the results of the test, grading this relation as quite adequate. Regarding the question about sensations, the pleasant sensation was predominant for the males as well as for the females. The main emotion perceived was inspiration, which was consistent with my preliminary opinion. Other

In my opinion, the formal relation between luminaries and space is inadequate; the luminaries were not distributed uniformly around the room, creating some dark areas and some places that were over illuminated. My results were not consistent with the general opinion obtained from the questionnaire. The majority of people surveyed thought that the formal relation was quite adequate.

Regarding the chromatic aspect, we agreed that the light was very cool. To the question about the relation between color of light and materials, my opinion was that it was inadequate because it brought together a padded base with a cool light.

FINAL CONCLUSIONS People feel different emotions based on the kind of objects present in a room or in how the light is configured.

To evoke de emotion fun, an interior space must have a combination of colors (cool and warm) and generous contrasts, that provide room to discover; everything should not be out in the open. To elicit, the emotion bored, the space should have a monotonous light and elements built with just a few materials.

To elicit the emotion fascination, the space should have bright elements that create strong contrasts; in addition, light and shadow should have a coherent rhythm. To evoke the emotion intimate, the space should include warm light, with objects in warm colors and rough textures, for example: stone, fabric, etc.

To evoke the emotion inspiration, the space should have clear, cool lights and the objects should also be in light colors; there should not be shadows or contrasts. To elicit the emotion indifference, the space should include

un nivel bastante adecuado. Referente a la pregunta sobre las sensaciones ha predominado una sensación agradable tanto en el sexo masculino como en el sexo femenino. Mi resultado se corresponde bastante con las opiniones generales obtenidas en el cuestionario. En cuanto al aspecto cromá-

tico, mis resultados previos se decantan por una tonalidad bastante fría, y en los resultados generales se opta por un valor intermedio.

En mi opinión la relación formal entre las luminarias y el espacio es poco adecuada, ya que las luminarias no se han distribuido uniformemente alrededor de la sala, por lo cual se crean espacios oscuros y otros demasiado iluminados. Mi resultado no se corresponde con las opiniones generales obtenidas en el cuestionario. La mayoría de los encuestados opina que su relación formal es bastante adecuada.

En cuanto al aspecto cromático, coincidimos al pensar que se trata de una luz muy fría. A la pregunta referida a la relación entre el color de la luz y los materiales, en mi opinión no son adecuados ya que se junta una base acolchada con una luz fría. En cambio, el resultado general del cuestionario muestra una relación bastante adecuada.

Referente a la pregunta sobre las sensaciones ha predominado una sensación desagradable en el caso de las mujeres y en el caso de los hombres ha quedado igualado. Entre las sensaciones de las mujeres cabe destacar la de fascinación, y en el caso de los hombres la de indiferencia.

Mi opinión por lo tanto, coincide con las conclusiones generales del sexo masculino. Otras emociones que han asociado los encuestados a esta imagen han sido: comodidad, ilusión, estresante, frialdad, etc.

CONCLUSIONES FINALES Dependiendo de cómo esté configurada la luz en una sala y de cómo sean los objetos

en esta sala, las personas vamos a desarrollar distintas emociones.

Para desarrollar la emoción de diversión, el espacio interior debe tener una combinación de colores (fríos y cálidos) y unos contrastes generosos, que creen espacios para descubrir, que no se vea todo a simple vista. Para desarrollar la emoción de aburrimiento, el espacio debe tener una luz monótona y unos elementos hechos por muy poca variedad de materiales.

Para desarrollar la emoción de fascinación, el espacio debe tener elementos brillantes, que creen fuertes contrastes. Además, la luz y la sombra deben crear un ritmo coherente. Para desarrollar la emoción de íntimo, el espacio debe caracterizarse por tener una luz cálida, con objetos de

colores cálidos y texturas rugosas (por ejemplo: piedra, telas, etc.)

Para desarrollar la emoción de inspiración, el espacio debe tener una luz clara y fría, además de que los objetos deben ser también de colores claros. No puede haber sombras ni contrastes. Para desarrollar la emoción de indiferencia, el espacio debe caracterizarse por tener una luz fría, los elementos que configuran el espacio no deben tener una posición definida y además deben estar hechos con materiales fríos.

Para desarrollar la emoción de decepción, la luz no debe tener en cuenta la arquitectura. Para desarrollar la emoción de miedo, el espacio debe caracterizarse por no tener una luz distribuida coherentemente

y por tener muchos deslumbramientos.

FUTURAS INVESTIGACIONES Sería interesante elaborar esta encuesta a más personas tanto de la universidad de arquitectura (ya que tienen unos conocimientos más desarrollados de la iluminación y el espacio), como a personas de cualquier parte, para contrastar sus emociones y ver si coinciden o no.

Finalmente, sería interesante difundir este conocimiento para que las personas fuéramos conscientes de cómo podemos cambiar la sensación de un espacio mediante la luz y los elementos que lo configuran.

Además de poder adaptar los espacios que quisiéramos a una emoción concreta y hasta poder utilizarlo como terapia.

ILUMINACIÓN ARTIFICIAL Y EMOCIONES Texto. Dr. Adrián Muros Alcojor La IESNA (Iluminating Enginyering Society of North America) patrocinó, durante los años 80, numerosos estudios sobre la relación entre la psicología y la iluminación del espacio. Una parte de estos estudios fueron dirigidos a evaluar el concepto de calidad lumínica, Veith y Newshman afirmaron que la calidad lumínica se hace presente cuando las condiciones de iluminación dan soporte a las necesidades del comportamiento de los individuos.

En el año 2000 IESNA enumera seis tipos de necesidades: Humor, confort visual, Juicio Estético, salud-seguridad y bienestar, Comunicación social y Realización de tareas. Los estudios sobre el diseño emocional (básicamente de productos y objetos) dirigido por Desmet y Norman 2002, 2005, analizan las relaciones psicológicas entre el diseño formal y la emoción que éste produce.

J. A. Corraliza en su libro “La experiencia del ambiente: percepción y significado del medio construido” considera la existencia clave de dos componentes para explicar la conducta en el espacio y el tiempo: son los conceptos cognitivos y los afectivos. Considera que cada persona evalúa el ambiente a partir de tres factores básicos: El factor objetivo definido por los aspectos del diseño formal del espacio, El factor subjetivo que contempla los aspectos cognitivos y los emocionales afectivos, analizando las dimensiones afectivas del espacio y El factor referencial definido como la interpretación del espacio a partir de diferentes códigos de significado.

Hoy nadie pone en duda el papel de la luz artificial en la definición del espacio y consecuentemente en la transmisión de emociones a los individuos. La dificultad radica en establecer mecanismos científicos para relacionar las características de la iluminación y del diseño formal del espacio con las emociones psicológicas.

El trabajo que desarrolla la alumna Sandra Del Rio utiliza el método de la encuesta (estudio de casos) para intentar buscar algunas respuestas. Tras realizar un selectiva búsqueda de imágenes de espacios iluminados con luz artificial interpela a los individuos encuestados a que expresen las emociones que reciben de entre dos grupos principales (suficientemente aceptado por la psicología emocional) de emociones agradables y desagradables, y que en una segunda fase concreten la sensación percibida como: diversión, fascinación, íntimo, indiferencia, aburrimiento, decepción y miedo.

Seguramente el lector podrá encontrar muchos puntos de coincidencia y seguramente también de contradicción en su propia experiencia. Lo que es indudable es que cada vez serán más habituales este tipo de estudios que buscan contribuir a mejorar la iluminación artificial y los resultados psicológicos emocionales que produce en los individuos.

FUTURE INVESTIGATIONS An interesting idea would be administering this survey to more people,

from the university of architecture (since they have a more developed sense of lighting and space), and from every walk of life, to contrast their emotions and observe if they coincide or not.

Finally, it would be interesting to spread this knowledge and help people become more conscious of how to effect changes in the sensation perceived in a room by arranging its elements and lighting.

Furthermore, we could adapt a space to a specific emotion and even use it as therapy.

PREMIOS LAMP LIGHTING SOLUTION 2015: INTERNACIONALIZACIÓN Y CALIDAD The present edition, the 6th since the contest started on 2008, has registered an internationalization record of 70%, increasing 9% over the last edition. 598 projects have been submitted from 54 countries. The gala, on June 11th at Tibidabo Amusement Park, Barcelona, was attended by 500 professionals of the lighting sector, who didn’t want to miss the prize-giving event of these awards which are already amongst the most important ones in the international lighting calendar. The creative “Walk”. A Michele De

Lucchi installation that invites reflection.

54th edition of the “Salone del Mobile Milano” Between April 14 and 19, 2015, the 54th edition of the “Salone del Mobile Milano” was celebrated. This year it coincided with Euroluce and with The International Year of Light and technologies based on Light.

An ideal tour brought together the world of light projects with the area of the fair dedicated to design and technology for the workspace: Workplace 3.0. The great installation “The Walk”, created by Michele De Lucchi, the internationally renowned Italian architect, was at the forefront and entertained with various activities, because, at the end, what is important is not the space but what happens in it.

riticizing is easy, and praising, even more; we like the verb reflecting.

Once again, we did not want to miss the annual date with design in Milan. We did not get a chance to see half of the half of the half, but those days gave us a chance to reflect. In a way, thinking is designing, and not many know how to do it; we are immersed in a culture of immediacy, where, much too frequently, thinking is a luxury.

Leaving Rho behind, we seized the opportunity and visited the “Fuori

Salone” downtown. As usual, it was dressed up for the occasion; it was Design Week and everything transpired Design: the streets, the stores, the museums. Spaces become an extension of what was happening during those days.

Walk, walk and walk. Reflect, reflect and reflect.

This is what De Lucchi achieves in “The Walk” (La Passeggiata), a diverse vision, reflection and metaphor of the world of work and the creative processes around it.

His goal was to create a circular course, kind of a Moebius ribbon that continues “ad infinitum”; a river,

with the different work environments located in its meanders.

Space is not and end in itself; it promotes and breeds creativity. A good spatial design makes things happen. De Lucchi knows this well and reminds us that “believing in philosophy is worthwhile and philosophy was born on the go. To live, work, produce, discuss, decide and evolve makes sense only when you know where you are going and if there are good reasons to get there, to reach that goal”.

Steve Jobs created while walking or talking with his creative employees and that is why the Apple Headquarters for Steve Jobs and Sir Norman Foster is circular.

As a kind of cloister, it promotes walking through the different work environments that surround a large central forest. It is also the reason why the first change that Steve Jobs made when he joined Pixar was reforming and relocating the bathrooms and the space designated for coffee breaks. He located them in the center, placing them far from the places of work, forcing people to walk and above all, propitiating the “casual” meeting between people that barely knew each other. The importance of moving around in the office was clear to him; he knew it would generate the inspiration needed for the creative process. It is in that walk and that interaction between people of different disciplines or different departments of a company, where you get the

Un recorrido ideal unió el mundo del proyecto de la luz con el ámbito de la feria dedicado al diseño y la tecnología para los espacios de trabajo, el Workplace 3.0. La gran instalación “El Paseo” concebida por el arquitecto italiano de renombre internacional Michele De Lucchi lo presidió y animó con actividades diversas, pues cada vez más, lo importante no es el espacio, sino no lo que sucede en el.

C

riticar es fácil, y alabar aun más... preferimos el verbo reflexionar. Un vez más, no nos hemos perdido la cita anual del diseño en Milán.

No hemos visto ni la mitad de la mitad de la mitad… pero estos días nos han permitido reflexionar. Pensar, es un modo de diseñar, y no muchos saben practicarlo, pues estamos inmersos en la cultura de la inmediatez, en el que poder pensar, en demasiadas ocasiones es un lujo.

También aprovechamos y alejándonos de Rho, nos acercamos al Fuori Salone en plena ciudad. Como siempre, la vimos vestida para la ocasión, era su Design

Week y todo olía a Diseño, las calles, las tiendas, los museos,…Todos los espacios son una extensión de lo que pasa esos días…

Pasear, pasear,… y pasear. Reflexionar, reflexionar,… y reflexionar.

Eso es lo que consigue De Lucchi con “El Paseo” (The Walk o La Passeggiata), una diversa visión, reflexión y metáfora sobre el mundo del trabajo y los procesos creativos que lo rodean. Su objetivo fue crear un recorrido circular, una especie de cinta de Moebius que continúa hacia el infinito, un rio en cuyos meandros se disponen los diferentes ambientes laborales.

El espacio no es un fin en sí mismo,

pero este estimula e incentiva la creatividad. Un buen diseño espacial posibilita que pasen cosas. De Lucchi lo sabe bien y nos recuerda que “merece creer en la filosofía y la filosofía nació andando. Vivir, trabajar, producir, discutir, decidir y evolucionar tiene sentido sólo cuando se sabe hacia dónde se va y si hay buenas razones para pensar que mereces alcanzar ese lugar, ese objetivo”.

Steve Jobs creaba paseando y conversando con sus creativos y es por ello que el nuevo Headquarter de Steve Jobs y Sir Norman Foster para Apple es circular. Porque a modo de claustro, permite el paseo a través de

los diferentes ambientes de trabajo alrededor de un gran bosque central. Es también por ello, que el primer cambio que Jobs hizo al entrar en Pixar, fue simplemente reformar y reubicar los aseos y el espacio destinado a tomar el café. Situándolos en una zona central, los alejaba de los puestos de trabajo, provocando el paseo y sobretodo propiciando el encuentro “casual” entre personas que ni tan solo se conocían.

Tenía claro lo importante que es moverse por la oficina, con el objetivo de generar los estímulos esenciales para el proceso creativo. Porque es en ese paseo, en esa hibridación entre personas de disciplinas o departamentos diferentes de una compañía que se consigue la polinización cruzada de ideas y se potencia la creatividad.

“Caminar ayuda a alejar las ansiedades y preocupaciones y a reconciliar la mente con el cuerpo” (Luca Gianotti), porque “El arte de caminar es un arte visual, que permite adquirir la capacidad de mirar al mundo de forma distinta” (Wu Ming 2). Estas reflexiones fueron entre otras, el punto de partida para Michele de Lucchi para la definición de cuatro ámbitos de trabajo y la

conectividad entre ellos: Club, Hombres Libres, Ágora y Laboratorio.

Pero es la acción, las actividades que se producen en ellos y el paseo, los que caracterizan estos espacios y no al revés.

“Mens sana in corpere sano”. Michele de Lucchi nos realiza una “Promenade Architectural”, que nos invita a “pensar el medio de trabajo como un gimnasio para entrenar la mente”.

No es tan complicado. Miremos cómo

funciona la naturaleza y aprendamos de ella. La oficina debe convertirse en un espacio, o suma de espacios, en el que broten las mejores y más fértiles simientes, es decir las ideas. Como un trébol de cuatro hojas, con estos cuatro elementos ámbitos y diferentes atmosferas, podemos empezar a diseñar la oficina del futuro como “ecosistema”.

Pero… ¿Por qué del futuro? ¿Por qué nos ponemos mano a la obra y pensamos la de nuestro presente?. ■

It is not that complicated. Let’s look at how nature works and learn from it. The office should become a place where the best and more fertile seeds sprout, that is to say, the ideas. Like a four-leaf clover, with these four areas and different atmospheres, we can start designing the office of the future like an “ecosystem”. But, why leave it for the future? Why don’t we get down to business and create the office of the present?. ■

Fuorisalone, design and young creativity in Milan Six days and 1.258 events. Almost at all. The Milano Design Week 2015 will be remembered for the large crowds and high spring temperatures that they were inviting to walk along the Italian city turned for seven days in the world capital of the design. nzo Catellani has it clear. His Casa Della Luce in Ventura Lambrate has turned into the only space.

Created like point of meeting for architects and designers of lighting, the house of the light is also a space dedicated to the investigation and the experimentation, a temple dedicated to the lighting impossible to reproduce in a fairground enclosure.

For this motive, Catellani and Smith it did not take part this 2015 in Euroluce, the famous designer explained during the visit of iCandela to his showroom.

La Milano Design Week 2015 será recordada por la gran afluencia de público y por las altas temperaturas primaverales que invitaban a pasear por la ciudad italiana, convertida durante siete días en la capital mundial del diseño. ICandela estuvo allí... Te lo explicamos.

nzo Catellani lo tiene claro. Su Casa Della Luce en Ventura Lambrate se ha convertido en un espacio único. Concebida como punto de encuentro para arquitectos y diseñadores de iluminación, la casa de la luz es también un espacio dedicado a la investigación y la experimentación, un templo dedicado a la iluminación imposible de reproducir en un recinto ferial. Por este motivo, la firma Catellani & Smith no participó este 2015 en la Feria Euroluce, nos explicó el famoso diseñador durante la visita de iCandela a su showroom.

Y no es el único. Son muchos los diseñadores que apuestan por mostrar sus novedades fuera del recinto ferial, en una ciudad que uno año más se ha volcado en la semana del diseño.

nes... La febril actividad en el recinto ferial de Milano Rho durante el Salone del Mobile se ha extendido un año más por toda la ciudad.

El FuoriSalone ha ido ganando importancia durante los últimos años y es mucho más que una serie de eventos complementarios al Salone Internazionale del Mobile. Se ha convertido en una cita ineludible para los profesionales relacionados con el diseño. ¿Damos un paseo?

De barrio industrial a espacio de diseño Empezamos por Ventura Lambrate.

Desde el año 2010, Ventura Lambrate es un evento clave de la Semana del Diseño en Milán. Los datos de la edición de 2015 son un claro ejemplo del éxito de la iniciativa: este año el certamen ha celebrado su sexta edición con 176 propuestas, realizadas por diseñadores

provinentes de 36 países. Alrededor de cien mil personas visitaron el barrio milanés, con más de 13.000 metros cuadradros, repartidos en hasta 20 localizaciones diferentes. 1.500 periodistas visitaron las diferentes propuestas, en las que han colaborado nada menos que 950 diseñadores.

México ha sido uno de los países presentes en Ventura Lambrate. iCandela entrevistó al joven diseñador de Iluminación David Pompa, quien nos explicó que Ventura Lambrate es su parte “preferida de Milán. Nos ha ido muy bien poder exhibir aquí por la atmósfera creada por las universidades, por los diseñadores. El tipo de gente que se pasea por aquí combina muy bien con el producto que presentamos”.

Pompa presentó unas luminarias de diseño contemporáneo, basadas en la artesanía mexicana. Pasado y presente en una misma fuente de luz.

Tortona Design Week De Ventura Lambrate a Tortona, otro barrio de Milán pasado industrial, hay un buen paseo. Pero no importa. Es una zona de visita obligada. Superstudio Piu ha cumplido este año 15 años liderando el diseño con el nuevo formato Superdesign SHOW, un proyecto evolutivo del Temporary Museum for New Design.

Con 10.000 metros cuadrados de espacio expositivo Superstudio ha presentado diseños italianos e internacionales y también proyectos de estilo de vida y

Emotional lighting in Saint Mamés, cathedral of soccer The new stadium of Saint Mamés, which was the cathedral of soccer during the 20th century, is a Modern Temple of the 21st century. Here sport competitions coexist in harmony with the daily routine of the city. The project was done by a great team of professionals headed by the architect César Aitor Azcárate, from the IDOM ACXT studio, and Susaeta pro Lighting. aint Mamés was known as the cathedral of world soccer for 100 years. This centenarian place has witnessed the passage of time and on its lawn many a game of soccer has been played, be it at national or international level.

Even though it was remodeled in 1982, for the World Cup that took place in Spain, the field had become obsolete. Moreover, the EFA had been demanding stricter measures, such as the elimination of the standing room grandstands as well as improvements in the security and an access for the handicapped. For all these reasons,

building a new stadium was in order.

Building the new Saint Mamés stadium in the same location of the old one has been an impressive architectural project. The result is a stadium that is admired all over the world. The project has not been limited to the construction of the field; there also has been a total overhaul of the area, which include new roads to the Biscay capital as well as the instatement of the Technological Campus of the University of the Basque Country.

Emotional Lighting The treatment of the facade is a proposal of Susaeta pro Lighting

that opts for a semi-transparent and permeable cover with a triple objective. In the first place, ennobling the facade with a treatment capable of transmitting urban values, an aspect that is missing from many sports stadiums; secondly, generating exterior-interior transparency so the use of the stadium and the quality of the spaces can be appreciated by the citizens, and lastly, generating the opposite transparency, that is, interior-exterior so that the users of the stadium can truly appreciate the inter action with the city.

an Mamés ha sido llamado durante 100 años la catedral del fútbol mundial. Este centenario campo ha sido testigo del paso del tiempo y sobre su césped se han disputado infinidad de partidos, tanto a nivel nacional como internacional.

A pesar de su remodelación en 1982, con motivo del Mundial celebrado en España, el campo se había quedado obsoleto, además a ello se le sumaba que la UEFA cada vez exigía unas medidas más estrictas, como la supresión de las gradas de pie o mejoras en la seguridad y accesibilidad para personas con discapacidades. Por lo que ha sido inevitable abordar la construcción de un nuevo estadio.

La construcción del nuevo San Mamés, en los mismos terrenos que el viejo, ha sido un impresionante proyecto arquitectónico. El resultado es un estadio admirado a escala mundial.

El proyecto no sólo ha consistido en la construcción del campo sino en una completa regeneración de la zona, que incluye nuevos accesos viarios a la capital vizcaína, así como la instalación del Campus Tecnológico de la Universidad del País Vasco.

Iluminación emocional El tratamiento de la fachada es una propuesta de Susaeta pro Lighting que apuesta por una cubierta semitransparente y permeable con un triple objetivo. En primer lugar, ennoblecer la fachada con un tratamiento capaz de transmitir valores urbanos, aspecto que no suele ser frecuente en los estadios deportivos; en segundo lugar generar transparencia exterior-interior, de modo que el uso del estadio y las cualidades de los espacios sean percibidos por los ciudadanos y, por último, la transparen-

cia inversa, es decir, interior-exterior para que los usuarios del estadio perciban claramente la relación con la ciudad.

“El arquitecto César Aitor Azcárate ha querido hacer un edificio que tuviera una piel alrededor que fuera especial, permeable, que permitiera ver desde dentro el resto de la ciudad, ya que el campos se situa practicamente en el centro de Bilbao”, ha explicado a iCandela el diseñador de iluminación, Javier Susaeta.

“Para ello concibió una piel blanca, que está hecha con un material plásti-

co, que de día tiene una imagen blanca, relacionada con los colores del club, el rojo y blanco. Por la noche, el edificio pasa a convertirse en una gran luminaria”, ha añadido Susaeta.

Segunda piel Para ello, alrededor de la fachada del estadio se han montado unas velas especiales para crear la apariencia de una segunda piel. La instalación cuenta con cinco anillos horizontales con cerca de 500 velas verticales de 5 metros de altura y con una torsión de 90 grados desde la parte superior a la inferior.

would allow a visual of the city from the inside, considering that the campus is located practically in the center of Bilbao”, Javier Susaeta, lighting designer, explained for iCandela.

“To accomplish this, he envisioned a white skin made of plastic material, during the day it projects a white image associated with the colors of the club, red and white. At night, the building becomes an enormous luminary”, added Susaeta.

Second Skin To create an appearance of second skin, special candles were placed around the facade of the stadium. The installation has five horizontal rings with close to 500 vertical candles measuring 5 meters in height and a torsion of 90 degrees from top to bottom.

Each candle is equipped with 17 ultra bright modules Dot XL-6 RGB. In total, 42.500 RGB spots light the 2.500 candles, creating an impressive luminous canvas. “We integrated these luminaries to the structure and shone the light against the candles in a specific direction. For this purpose

LED,RGB technology was used, keeping the white color during the night too but with the possibility of doing more with it”, pointed out Javier Susaeta.

Special profiles were installed to house DOT XL-6 RGB and mount them perpendicularly to the candle. To obtain a perfect beam of light, each spot was positioned at a different angle and using a lampshade to avoid a direct visual of the spots.

The main objective of the project was to create a 360 degrees multimedia facade. With it, the different moods and ambiances going on inside the stadium can be communicated to the city. The dynamic lighting sequences are achieved thanks to the Video Micro Converter (VMC) equipment used in combination with the fx Lighting Control System (LCE-fx).

Connection with the city On game days, considering that most of the matches happen during night hours, the stadium lights up its interior at the same time that it lights the slats of the exterior skin in a red tone, making itself more present in the city.

Flash projectors are distributed randomly on the facade, so that each time the Athletic Club scores a goal, they shine mimicking the flashes produced inside, in the field, and which are the signal and the connection of the club with the city, its citizens and the soccer fans.

The lighting has been programmed to communicate four different emotional states that are in tune with the activity happening in the premises. In first place, the perception of the stadium during day hours, when there are no sport celebrations. In this case the transparency of the skin of the facade and the white shade of the slats make up the leitmotif of the stadium.

Cada una de las velas está equipada con 17 módulos ultrabrillantes Dot XL-6 RGB, En total 42.500 puntos RGB iluminan las 2.500 velas, creando así un impresionante lienzo lumínico. “Lo que hicimos fue integrar estas luminarias en la estructura y lanzar la luz contra la vela en una determinada dirección. Par ello utilizamos la tecnología LED, RGB, pensando que por la noche también fuera blanco, pero que tuviera la posibilidad de hacer más cosas”, ha señalado Javier Susaeta.

También se instalaron unos perfiles especiales para albergar los módulos DOT XL-6 RGB y montarlos en perpendicular a la vela. Para obtener el haz de luz perfecto, cada punto se posiciona en un ángulo diferente junto con un paralúmen especialmente diseñado para evitar la visión directa de los puntos.

puede comunicar los diferentes estados y el ambiente que se vive dentro del estadio a la ciudad. Las secuencias de iluminación dinámica se consiguen gracias a los aparatos de Video Micro Converter (VMC) utilizados en combinación con el Sistema de Control de iluminación fx (LCE-fx).

Unos proyectores tipo flash se distribuyen aleatoriamente en la fachada, haciendo que cuando el Athletic Club marca un gol, se iluminen de manera aleatoria simulando los destellos de los flashes que se producen en el interior del campo y que son la señal y la rela-

ción del club con la ciudad, los ciudadanos y los aficionados al fútbol.

La iluminación se ha programado para comunicar cuatro estados emocionales diferentes en sintonía con la actividad del recinto. En primer lugar, la percepción del estadio durante el día, en los momentos en los que no hay celebración deportiva. En este caso, la transparencia de la piel de la fachada y la tonalidad blanca de las lamas configurará el leitmotiv del estadio.

“Hemos hecho un proyecto con una envergadura bestial – ha señalado Javier Susaeta –. En estos momentos es, problablemente, una de las instalaciones en su campo más grandes de Europa y probablemente del mundo.

He says that his profession: lighting designer, was born at an idyllic period that will not return; therefore it needs to be redefined. Roger Narboni has been dedicated to urban, landscape, and architectural lighting at large scales, for more than three decades. After a short first interview, done a few months ago and published by iCandela.com, we are delighted to interview such an authority in Lighting Design one more time.

hat is light for Roger Narboni?

Natural and artificial lights are for me fantastic materials and mediums that still astonished me in term of innovation, potentialities and creativity.

Why did you choose the world of lighting as your professional field?

When did your interest for lighting begin?

I have worked first as an oil painter playing with light and transparent colored layers (from 1972 to 1981) and then as an artist using light in sculptures and sensorial spaces that I designed and proposed to Art centers and Art galleries (from 1981 to 1986).

The spaces I designed with light and other materials such as industrial glass panels were already quite monumental and they became bigger and bigger and I felt that I could not going on doing this kind of interior spaces. I found out that the city outside with all its architectures, landscapes and public spaces could be a fantastic

game field to express my ideas and desires. I never liked this world (and market) of official Art where at that time light was not recognized as an Art medium. I wanted to work in cities and for the people living there. And it is why I decided to use my creativity, approaches and theories about light and lightings in the urban environment field and I created in 1987, in France, this profession of lighting designer dedicated to urban lighting and lighting master planning.

In 1987, you founded the studio “CONCEPTO�, dedicated to the design of urban, landscape and architectural lighting projects at large scales. How has your profession changed since then?

It has totally change in fact. Now as a lighting designer we have to deal with a lot of constraints, sometime contradictory: norms and regulations, energy savings needs, environmental issues, protection of nocturnal biodiversity, very low budgets for design fees and construction works, concurrency of the big engineering

offices, safety and security demands.

But I think also that these new constraints offer a chance to all of us to reinvent and to redefine our profession in the future, because this profession was born in a quite idyllic period that will never come back.

A few months ago, you told us, at a conference held in Barcelona, that LED technology had changed urban lighting. What are the new tendencies on this type of lighting and in contemporary architecture?

Well, LEDs are everywhere now. This technology give us the opportunity to create urban lightings with new kind of fixtures and furniture, smaller, more aesthetic and more integrated.

It offers us new uses of colors if we can master them instead of using predigest RGB color programs. It is also a digital technology closed and linked to all our new digital world.

And that was not the case with the old technologies such as discharge or fluorescent lamps for example.

Qué es la luz para Roger Narboni?

Para mí, la luz, tanto natural como artificial, es un medio y un material fantástico que aún me asombra en cuanto a innovación, potencial y creatividad. ¿Por qué decidió dedicarse profesionalmente al mundo de la iluminación? ¿Cuando nació su interés por este sector?

Primero, trabajé como pintor al óleo jugando con la luz y con capas trasparentes de colores (desde 1972 a 1981); luego, como artista utilizando la luz en las esculturas y los espacios sensoriales que diseñe y propuse para centros de arte y galerías de arte (desde 1981 a 1986). Los espacios que diseñaba, con luz y otros materiales tales como paneles de vidrio industrial, ya para ese entonces eran bastante monumentales y fueron haciéndose más y más grandes, hasta que comprendí que no era posible continuar haciendo este tipo de arte en espacios interiores. Descubrí que afuera, en la ciudad, con sus arquitecturas, paisajes y espacios públicos, estaba el campo de juego perfecto para expresar mis ideas y deseos. Nunca me gusto el mundo (y mercado) del Arte

oficial, en el cual, para ese momento, no se reconocía la luz como medio de arte. Yo deseaba trabajar en ciudades y para la gente que vivía en ellas. Esa es la razón por la cual decidí usar mi creatividad, enfoque y teorías sobre la luz y la iluminación en el área del ambiente urbano, y crear, en Francia, en 1987, la profesión de diseñador de iluminación dedicada a la iluminación urbana y planes maestros de iluminación.

En 1987, usted fundó el estudio CONCEPTO, dedicado al diseño de proyectos de iluminación urbana, paisajista y arquitectónica de grandes dimensiones. ¿Cómo ha cambiado su profesión desde entonces?

De hecho, ha cambiado totalmente.

Ahora, como diseñador de iluminación debo enfrentar muchas limitaciones, a veces contradictorias: normas y regulaciones, necesidad de ahorrar energía, problemas ambientales, protección de la biodiversidad nocturna, presupuestos muy bajos para los costos de diseño y trabajos de construcción, concurrencia de las grandes oficinas de ingeniería y exigencias de seguridad.

Sin embargo, pienso que estas nuevas limitaciones nos dan la oportunidad de reinventarnos y de redefinir nuestra

profesión hacia el futuro, pues esta profesión nació en un momento idílico que no volverá a repetirse.

Hace unos meses nos explicó en una conferencia realizada en Barcelona que la tecnología LED ha cambiado la iluminación urbana. ¿Cuáles son las nuevas tendencias en este tipo de iluminación y en la arquitectura contemporánea?

Hoy en día, los LEDs están en todas partes. Esta tecnología nos brinda la oportunidad de crear iluminación urbana con nuevos tipos de luminarias y mobiliario, más pequeños, más estéticos y más integrados. Nos ofrece nuevas maneras de usar los colores, siempre y cuando aprendamos a dominarlos, en vez de utilizar los programas pre digeridos de color RGB. Al mismo tiempo, es una tecnología digital vinculada a todo el nuevo mundo digital a diferencia de las viejas tecnologías como las de emisión o los fluorescentes.

Pienso que el potencial que ofrecen los LEDs de integrarse completamente a los materiales de construcción no ha sido estudiado todavía por la arquitectura contemporánea. Estos “materiales de luz” nos darán nuevas oportunidades de diseñar el espacio arquitectónico de una manera distinta, en mayor

LEDs to be totally integrated into the construction materials has not yet been studied. This “light materials” will give us new opportunities to design the architectural space differently, with a stronger complicity with lighting and maybe in the future without any apparent lighting fixtures.

And hopefully, citizens will be able with these LEDs technologies to choose and interact with their own night environment.

You have stated that design and creativity can transform the urban space. How? The urban landscape was for decades lighted with a functional approach.

I think that a creative lighting can totally transform the urban landscape at night to host citizen differently, to offer them a new vision on their urban environment but also to reveal to them at night invisible things such as original site as it was before the development of the cities, unknown presences of historical infrastructures, ghost rivers (buried today underground), city’s morphology and topography, grids, mental connections, citizens relationships, etc.

In the past few years, environmental sustainability and energy savings have become fundamental aspects of the new

lighting master plan of cities. Do they condition excessively the end result? Where is the balance?

I think that we can and should start our thinking to study and to design a lighting master plan with energy saving and sustainable Medio ambient in mind from the very beginning. No one can design nowadays a nightscape or a nocturnal urban environment without these fundamental aspects in mind. The balance should be global.

That’s mean our lighting proposals for residential and actives area should be obligatory balances with proposition of darkness in natural spaces, in term of geographical and night temporalities approaches.

You have designed more than 120 lighting master plans in different countries, where light is understood in different ways.

How do you approach the different perspectives of light when doing your projects?

I have always been convinced that the design of a lighting master plan in another country should be done in collaboration with local lighting designers or at least local architects and landscape architects. And that’s how we did for studying all these lighting master plans in all these foreign countries.

These fruitful collaborations and dialogues allowed us to be literally “feed” by others cultures and other peoples. And the resulting projects are expressions of these “cultural weddings”. And I really like and enjoy that. Working abroad is for me discovering other people, other cultures, it is not bringing our own culture or lighting culture to impose it to another country.

The use of LED technology brings color to urban lighting. Do you think this resource is being overused?

As I said before, this LED technology should really be carefully studied and mastered in terms of color uses. The use of predigest RGB programs and the use of primary colors should be forbidden in lighting design if we want to create poetical environment that do not get boring for citizens. But this really need specific education and training.

Colors are as complicated and complex to use in lighting design as are notes and instruments for composing music.

Of all the projects you have done, with almost three decades of experience, which is your favorite and why?

complicidad con la iluminación y quizás, en un futuro, sin necesidad de utilizar luminarias visibles. Esperemos que con estas tecnologías LEDs, los ciudadanos puedan escoger e interactuar con su propio ambiente nocturno.

Usted ha afirmado que el diseño y la creatividad pueden transformar el paisaje urbano. ¿Cómo?

Durante décadas, la iluminación del paisaje urbano se hizo pensando en su funcionalidad. Pienso que una iluminación creativa puede transformar totalmente el paisaje urbano nocturno y dar un servicio diferente a los ciudadanos. Puede ofrecerles una perspectiva novedosa de su ambiente nocturno y también revelarles, en la noche, las cosas que no están a la vista, como por ejemplo: un lugar en su estado original, tal como estaba antes del desarrollo de la ciudad, elementos de infraestructuras históricas desconocidos, ríos fantasmas (hoy día subterráneos), la morfología y topografía de la ciudad, redes, conexiones mentales, relaciones entre los ciudadanos, etc.

La sostenibilidad medioambiental y el ahorro energético se han conver-

tido en los últimos años en aspectos fundamentales de los nuevos planes maestros de iluminación de las ciudades. ¿Condicionan en exceso el resultado final? ¿Dónde está el equilibrio?

Podemos y debemos comenzar a estudiar el diseño de un plan maestro de iluminación que tome en cuenta la sustentabilidad y el ahorro energético desde el comienzo. Hoy día, nadie puede diseñar un paisaje nocturno o ambiente urbano nocturno sin tomar en cuenta estos aspectos fundamentales.

El balance debe ser global, es decir las propuestas de iluminación para áreas residenciales y áreas de actividades deben estar, obligatoriamente, balanceada con propuestas de oscuridad en los espacios naturales, basadas en un enfoque geográfico y de temporalidades nocturnas.

Israel, Brasil, Francia, China... Usted ha diseñado más de 120 planes maestros de iluminación en diferentes países, donde la cultura de la luz se entiende de diferente forma. ¿Cómo aborda estas diferentes perspectivas de la luz para realizar sus proyectos?

Estoy convencido de que diseñar un plan maestro de iluminación para otro país debe hacerse en colaboración con diseñadores de iluminación locales o por lo menos, arquitectos y paisajistas locales. Eso fue exactamente lo que hicimos al planificar los planes maestros de iluminación en todos estos países extranjeros.

Estos diálogos y colaboraciones fructíferas nos permitieron ser “alimentados” por personas de otras culturas. Los proyectos resultantes, son la expresión de estos “matrimonios culturales”. Es algo que me agrada y disfruto mucho.

Trabajar en el extranjero, para mí, es descubrir otras gentes, otras culturas; no es traer nuestras propias costumbres o nuestra cultura de iluminación e imponérsela a otro país.

El uso de la tecnología LED permite el uso del color en la iluminación urbana. ¿Cree que es un recurso que se está usando en exceso?

Como he mencionado antes, la tecnología LED debe ser cuidadosamente estudiada y dominada en términos de uso del color. El uso de programas pre digeridos RGB y el uso de colores primarios no deben usarse en el diseño de

kilometers long with 4 pylons of 185m high), realized in 2004, was one of the most complex lighting project for our studio, because we had simply to design and calculate everything just theoretically because the bridge construction was not yet started. And the client wanted a lighting visible from 10 kilometers away but without any glare or disturbances for the pedestrians walking on the bridge.

In interior lighting, when we designed the lighting for the new car’s presentation room of the Peugeot Citroën design center, realized in 2005, the client ask us an average lux level of 2500, with a uniformity closed to 1 and without any shadows on the floors in a totally blind room of almost 1.000 m². That was really a challenge and we did it we success. It was the first time for us that lighting was studied before the architecture and that the lighting was the starting point of the architectural design. It was a fantastic but also a very scary adventure.

But I could list many others lighting projects, because when we design in our studio, we try to never reproduce something we already done and this make things more complex to realize but also more interesting and challenging for us.

At the Ibero-American Meeting of Lighting Designers (EILD 2014) you spoke of a new tendency: the “black infrastructure”. What is it about?

The black infrastructure is a new layer in a lighting master plan to study, to define and then to preserve zones of darkness in the urban environment.

This dark infrastructure completes and matches with the green and blue infrastructures studied for cities. They allowed us to master at night (and hopefully to reduce) light pollution as well as to help protecting nocturnal biodiversity.

These zones of darkness are defined according to citizens nocturnal uses studied at the city scale and developed in terms of nocturnal territories and night temporalities.

The city of Rennes in the West of France was the first one in 2012 to approve that new black infrastructure

NOCTURNAL LANDSCAPE AND URBAN LIGHTING DESIGN Roger Narboni founded in 1987, the “CONCEPTO” studio, dedicated to the design of urban lighting, landscape and architectural projects at large scales. All through these years, he has designed more than 120 lighting master plans for cities and neighborhoods in France and all over the world.

He is a permanent member of the Administrative Council of the Association of Lighting Designers of France (ACE) and a member of the Professional Lighting Designers Association (PLDA) since 2005. In 2008 he started Concepteurs Lumières sans Frontières, an association that he presided for 4 years.

He has taught several international workshops on nocturnal landscape and urban lighting desing in France, Italy, Colombia and Iran and he is the author of various publications on this topic.

In 2008, you created Concepteurs Lumiéres sans Frontiéres, an association you presided for 4 years. What does it do?

We help, working as pro bono professionals, very poor countries and cities to create lighting master plans and lighting projects. We also share our lighting design knowledge and we try to help the local designers and technicians to develop their own local lighting culture.

We already had activities in Mali (for the study of the lighting master plan of

the city of Bamako with 18 European lighting designers working together and 5 lighting projects realized), in the city of Amathole, South Africa, in collaboration with LUCI association, and since 3 years in the city of Port-auPrince (Haiti) that was destroyed by a terrible earthquake.

You have taught several international workshops on nocturnal landscape and urban lighting planning in France, Italy, Colombia and Iran. What advice do you give your students?

Open your eyes at night, be very creative, work a lot, discover and study

iluminación si queremos crear ambientes poéticos que no se vuelvan aburridos para los ciudadanos. Se necesita una educación y entrenamiento específico para ello. El uso de colores en el diseño de iluminación es tan complejo como el uso de las notas e instrumentos en la composición de música.

Con casi tres décadas de experiencia, de todos los proyectos que ha realizado, ¿cuál ha sido el más complejo y por qué?

En iluminación arquitectónica, el diseño de iluminación del Puente Rion Antirion ( 2,5 kilómetros de largo y 4 pilones de 185m de alto), realizado en el 2004, fue uno de los proyectos de iluminación más complejos para nuestro estudio, pues debíamos diseñar y calcular todo teóricamente ya que la construcción del puente aún no había comenzado Además, los clientes querían una iluminación que fuese visible a una distancia de 10 kilómetros pero sin deslumbramiento o molestias para los peatones que cruzaran el puente.

En iluminación de interiores, el diseño de iluminación para la sala de exposición de automóviles del centro de diseño de Peugeot Citroën, realizada en el 2005. El cliente nos pidió un promedio de nivel lux de 2500, con una uniformidad cercana al 1 y sin reflejar sombras en el piso en un salón ciego de casi 1.000 m². Fue un gran reto y lo superamos con éxito. Nunca antes habíamos diseñado un proyecto de iluminación antes de la arquitectura y en el que la iluminación fuera el punto de partida del diseño arquitectónico. Fue una aventura fantástica aunque también intimidante.

Podría enumerarte muchos otros proyectos de iluminación, pues, en nuestro estudio, cuando diseñamos, tratamos de no reproducir algo que hayamos hecho antes. Esto hace que el trabajo sea más complejo de realizar pero a la vez, se convierte en un reto para nosotros y se hace más interesante.

En el Encuentro Iberoamericano de Lighting Designers (EILD 2014) habló de una nueva tendencia, la “Infraestructura negra”, ¿en qué consiste?

La infraestructura negra es una nueva

capa en un plan maestro de iluminación creado para estudiar, definir, y luego preservar áreas de oscuridad en el ambiente urbano. Esta infraestructura oscura, combina con las estructuras verde y azul proyectadas para las ciudades y las completa. Nos permite controlar (y reducir) la polución de luz en las noches, así como también proteger

la biodiversidad nocturna. Las zonas de oscuridad se definen de acuerdo a los hábitos nocturnos de los ciudadanos y se desarrollan en términos de territorios nocturnos y temporalidades de la noche.

La ciudad de Rennes, al oeste de Francia fue la primera ciudad en aprobar, en el 2012, la nueva estrategia de estruc-

Prestamos ayuda, en calidad de profesionales pro-bono, a países y ciudades muy pobres, en la creación de planes maestros de iluminación y proyectos de iluminación. También compartimos nuestro conocimiento en el área del diseño de iluminación para ayudar a los diseñadores y técnicos locales a desarrollar su propia cultura local de iluminación.

Hemos tenido actividades en Mali (para estudiar el plan maestro de iluminación de la ciudad de Bamako conjuntamente con 18 diseñadores de iluminación y realizando 5 proyectos de iluminación); en la ciudad de

Abran los ojos a la noche, sean creativos, trabajen duro, descubran y estudien su propia cultura local de iluminación, estudien y siempre tengan en cuenta las necesidades de los ciudadanos; nunca olviden que diseñan primeramente para ellos, sean testarudos y seductores, y difundan, tanto como puedan, la cultura del diseño de iluminación a sus futuros clientes, planificadores urbanos, arquitectos y paisajistas. ¡Eso ya de por si es una tarea difícil!

¿Cómo ve el futuro de su profesión?

Con el tiempo esta profesión se volverá más compleja y más difícil de realizar pues con la nueva tendencia de utilizar iluminación en todas partes, mucha gente probara hacerlo pensando que es muy sencillo. Tendremos que definir y defender nuestra profesión; necesitamos proteger la expresión de nuestra creatividad en un mundo impulsado por normas, regulaciones, problemas de presupuestos y numerosas limitaciones.

Para acabar, destaque un proyecto de iluminación que le gustaría realizar...

Sueño con conocer a un cliente o arquitecto (o arquitecto paisajista) que este convencido de que la luz y la iluminación deben ser el punto de partida al diseñar un proyecto, cualquier proyecto. Decide llamarme pero desafortunadamente me despierto antes de que logre hacerlo… ■

your local lighting culture, study and always take in account the citizen’s needs, don’t forget that you design first for them, be stubborn and seductive, and spread as much as possible the lighting design culture to future clients, urban planners, architects and landscape architects. That’s already quite a difficult task!

How do you see the future of your profession?

This profession will become more complex and more difficult to do, because with all the new trends about using lighting everywhere, everyone will try to do it, thinking that it is not so complicated.

We will have to define and to defend our profession. And we will need to protect the expression of our creativity in a world driven by norms, regulations, budget issues and numerous constraints.

To conclude, can you single out a lighting project that you would like to materialize?

I dream to meet a client and an architect (or a landscape architecte) that would really be convinced that light and lighting should be the starting point to design their project (whatever project).

They decide to call me, but unfortunately I wake up before they do so… ■

Restoration of the “Victoria Grande” Fortress (Melilla, Spain) FACING the restoration project without betraying its original, particular charm that only the ruin has, as a work of re-elaborating a discourse that links different ages and diverse experiences, with the awareness to be able to listen to the unexpected that could appear under the layers of history.

And doing so with the close collaboration of different professional disciplines, those were the initial conditions and the premises of this work under the leadership of architects from Chacel 8 studio.

T

he complete renewal of the facilities of the “Victoria Grande” fortress has maintained after its completion some elements that depict the evolution of the building along the centuries, remains of the different activities that hosted in the past. The original pavements are visible, and also modernist ceramic tiles that came later, in this play of time layers there is a narrative that addresses the curious visitor and tells him tales about the past. Re-filled after the premises abandoned its original military use as defence structure, the moats have been unearthed and now they surround again the whole perimeter, that can be accessed walking through a wooden bridge, just like in the old times of this building that once stood protecting the old city of Melilla and that later landmarked the division between the old and the new city.

The fortress was planned and built in 1736 by the military engineer Juan Martín Zermeño (some years later he was also the author of the restoration of the Montjüic Castle in Barcelona).

This bastion in triangle-shape was, in the beginning, a place where you cannot enter, later used as a prison (the place you cannot escape), and turned into a ruin for the lack of use.

Now, the place is a public space open to the visitors and will contribute to shape the identity of the city and free port of Spain’s Melilla, in the North of Africa. The result of the restoration aims to constitute a map on History, a reader of the events that have shaped the geography of the city and that gave to the building the marks on its skin.

The city of Melilla defined its territory by shooting a 24-pounder long gun at full power and then measuring the range of their defensive weapons: the distance reached established in 1862 the borders of the free port

thanks to the Wad-Ras treaty between the Spanish Crown and the Reign of Morocco.

Care for details The lighting design of the project is signed by Javier Gorriz, from DCI Consultancy, and it is the result of the careful application of LED technologies in terms of integration in architecture, in the sense that the luminaires have disappeared or become transparent not to interfere visually in the contemplation of the environment.

We can find a number of imaginative solutions about linear elements integration, all of them equipped with high quality LED sources. Sometimes they fly under the vaults drawing swift lines that uplight the ceilings, or create a play of dramatic backlights in the stone blinds when they are observed from outside the faces of the fortress.

l proyecto de recuperación integral del complejo fortificado del fuerte de la Victoria Grande ha sido llevado a cabo con la intención de mantener presentes los rastros que permiten conocer la evolución que el edificio ha vivido a lo largo de su vida. Con estas premisas se han conservado y consolidado restos de revestimientos antiguos, se han recuperado diversos tipos de pavimentos, que van desde los empedrados originales del siglo XVIII a una muestra significativa de pavimentos hidráulicos. Se recupera el sistema de fosos, redibujando la escala original del Fuerte, volviendo a tener la oportunidad de experimentar la sensación de cruzar el “foso de gola” atravesando un puente de madera. Además, se han mantenido vestigios de la demolición

de los elementos añadidos, dando pistas sobre las sucesivas transformaciones experimentadas por el espacio original.

Nos encontramos ante una edificación militar dirigida por el ingeniero Juan Martín Zermeño (autor de la reconstrucción del Castillo de Montjüich en Barcelona en 1757) concebida como baluarte defensivo (donde no se podía entrar), que pasa posteriormente a ser cárcel (donde no se podía salir), que se convierte en una ruina (deteriorada) y que ahora se transforma en un espacio abierto al público. Todo ello aderezado con retales de historias vividas, con anécdotas en la memoria y cicatrices en la piel, marcas que el paso del tiempo ha dejado. El resultado es un mapa histórico, a la manera de un collage que nos permite leer fragmentos de la vida del edificio

y entender su evolución, ligada a la historia de la ciudad de Melilla.

Desde sus almenas, en 1862 se disparó un cañón de 24 libras a plena carga de pólvora y 21º de elevación, con el objeto de que el alcance de sus proyectiles delimitara el territorio soberano del puerto franco de Melilla según un acuerdo sancionado por el tratado de WadRas entre la corona española y la marroquí.

A uniform wash would have created a flat and boring image of the building, but in this fashion, the result is eloquent without whimsicality. The light variations in colour temperature achieve a pictorial effect, and the accents punctuate the reading of the whole façade. On the sidewalls, the battlements are shaped vertically by light, giving order and rhythm to the image of the fortress, and the volume is then outlined clearly.

This project offered many good opportunities to give bright and smart solutions, and the results talk themselves about the synchronicity between architect, engineering and lighting design. The access ramp, built to assure mobility has been turned into a lighting integration element that gives the ambiance to the interior of the patio. This kind

of applications allows to respect faithfully the image of the building during the day and sets interesting nocturnal displays at nights. The light sources, hidden from direct vision, draw smoothly curves of light and shadow. The ventilation chimes were discovered during the restoration and now they work as lanterns, lit from the interior, a true eye candy when visiting the terraces of the walls. The result is full of this kind of subtle details, fruit of the application of technique and imagination The architects, the engineer and the lighting designer have developed an autonomous battery-driven luminaire with the shape of a primitive candlelight. Fitted with three LED of different tones of amber and warm colour temperatures, and controlled by an implementation of the ZigBee protocol, integrated with the rest of the installation, controlled by a KNX system, through a Printed Circuit Board bridge specially designed for this application.

With this development, the oil candle has been transported to the 21st century, that of the hyper-connectivity and the Internet of things. ■ © Jesús Granada

Todo el perímetro del baluarte, dotado de foso, se ilumina desde sus profundidades, consiguiendo en los muros un baño de luz que se atenúa suavemente al ir ganando altura.

Una inundación demasiado uniforme hubiera dado como resultado una imagen aburrida y monótona, aquí el resultado es dramático sin estridencias, con ligeras variaciones en la temperatura de color se consigue un efecto pictórico que nos remite a una luz proyectada por las hogueras. Los acentos en ciertos elementos sirven para puntuar la lectura de la fachada, y en los laterales, las cañoneras están delimitadas por luz rasante en los parapetos, aportando ritmo y orden

a la imagen del fuerte cuando se contempla desde mayor distancia.

El proyecto ofrecía muy buenas oportunidades, y los resultados muestran una excelente sintonía entre arquitectura, diseño de iluminación e ingeniería. La rampa de acceso, de nueva construcción, construida para garantizar la accesibilidad del recinto, ha sido convertida en un elemento integrador de la iluminación del patio del baluarte. Este tipo de soluciones permiten respetar la imagen diurna del conjunto y generan ambientes interesantes y teatrales al caer la noche. Las fuentes de luz, ocultas al visitante, dibujan suaves curvas de luz y sombra.

Las chimeneas de ventilación, de sección circular, descubiertas durante el proceso de restauración, se tratan desde el interior y proporcionan un regalo visual cuando se recorren la planta cubierta

de las murallas. El resultado está lleno de cuidados detalles como éste, de oportunidades aprovechadas con imaginación.

Queriendo añadir un elemento que emulara a la iluminación de candiles de aceite, el estudio de arquitectura, el diseñador de iluminación y la empresa Ilumarte han desarrollado un diseño de luminaria portátil dotada de elevada autonomía y equipada con tres emisores LED de diferentes temperaturas de color.

Todas estas luminarias son capaces de comunicarse entre ellas y con el sistema de gestión KNX que gobierna la instalación gracias a una placa que implementa el sistema ZigBee, un protocolo de comunicación por radiofrecuencia “ultraligero” (de baja potencia y bajo consumo de recursos de computación). De este modo han conseguido transportar el viejo candil al siglo XXI, el de la hiperconectividad y la llamada “internet de las cosas”. ■

The influence of light on circadian rhythms Unlike our ancestors, people in today’s society have access to light at any time of day through the efficient lighting systems that have been developed, especially, in the last decade. Concurrently, in the area of biomedical, and in chronobiology specifically, there has been great progress in the study of the effects of light on daily rhythms and the effects that imbalances in the circadian rhythm have in our health.

n the field of neuroscience, investigations have been conducted on neural pathways that produce physiological reactions to light beyond vision.

Having light available 24/7 has generated new behavior patterns, different work schedules and more activity shifted towards the night hours.

But are people ready to receive light at any given time of day?

Circadian rhythms To understand the biological basis of the influence that light has in humans, the environmental conditions of the planet in which they have evolved as a species, has to be taken into account. Earth spins on its axis every 24 hours and around the Sun in 365 days, approximately. These cyclic movements produce drastic changes in the environment which have conditioned life on earth. Among these conditioners, light stands out for its predictability.

During the day, solar light is intense and during the night light is soft, the brightest thing would be a full moon or a starry sky. Through the year, variations in light repeat themselves with dependability; longer days in summer and shorter in winter. If evolution of livings beings on the planet owe their adaptation to environmental conditions, then adaptation to changes between darkness and light has to be a key factor for the survival of the species.

In the course of evolution, organisms developed an internal structure, a biological clock, genetically determined, that varies within a period similar to Earth’s rotation, and which is capable of transmitting this information to all its functions. Thus, the physiology and behavior of living beings manifest in predictable variations every 24 hours, circadian cycles, that can be detected in practically all their functions.

In mammals, the main structure that forms this circadian biological clock

is the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) located in the hypothalamic region of the brain. SCN has the particularity of producing spontaneous electric changes through the day and transmitting them to the other structures of the organism.

Thus, every body function has a circadian rhythm. Our body has the capability of “setting” the times of day, or, in other words, each body function has an optimum moment at a specific time of day. The most evident circadian rhythm is the alternation between sleep and wakefulness: a good night sleep is essential to feel awake during the day. But this is, by no means, the only rhythm. For example, the temperature of the body lowers during the night and from the next morning on, it starts slowly climbing until the end of the afternoon, when it reaches its maximum temperature. Hormone secretions also have a circadian rhythm; the hormone cortisol, for example, rises in the early hours of the morning and stays in the

Disponer de luz artificial durante las 24 horas del día ha generado nuevos hábitos de conducta, distintos horarios de trabajo y mas desplazamiento de la actividad hacia la noche. Pero, ¿las personas están preparadas para recibir luz a cualquier hora del día?

Los ritmos circadianos Para entender la bases biológicas de la influencia de la luz en las personas hay que tener en cuenta las condiciones ambientales del planeta en el que, como especie, hemos evolucionado.

La Tierra gira sobre su eje aproximadamente cada 24 horas y alrededor del Sol cada aproximadamente 365 días. Estos movimientos cíclicos generan cambios drásticos en las condiciones ambientales que forzosamente han condicionado la vida sobre la Tierra. Entre estas condiciones, la luz destaca por su predictibilidad. Durante el día, la luz solar es de gran intensidad, durante la noche la luz es tenue,

como máximo la luz de la Luna llena o del cielo estrellado. A lo largo del año, las variaciones de luz se repiten con fiabilidad: días largos en verano y cortos en invierno. Si la evolución de los seres vivos en el planeta supone la adaptación a las condiciones ambientales del mismo, la adaptación a los cambios entre luz y oscuridad es un factor clave para la supervivencia de las especies.

En el curso de la evolución, los organismos han ido desarrollando una estructura interna, un reloj biológico, determinada genéticamente, que oscila con un período similar al de rotación de la Tierra y que es capaz de transmitir esta información a todas sus funciones. Así pues, la conducta y fisiología de los seres vivos tiene lugar en base a variaciones predictibles cada 24 horas, ritmos circadianos, que se pueden detectar en prácticamente la totalidad de sus funciones.

En mamíferos, la principal estructura que forma este reloj circadiano es el núcleo supraquiasmático (NSQ) situado en la región hipotalámica del cerebro. El NSQ tiene la particularidad de presentar espontáneamente cambios eléctricos a lo largo del día y de transmitir estas señales al resto

de estructuras de organismo. De este modo, cualquier función corporal presenta un ritmo circadiano. Así, nuestro organismo tiene capacidad para “marcar” las horas del día, o, dicho de otra manera, cada función orgánica tiene su momento óptimo en una hora del día determinada.

El ritmo circadiano más visible es la alternancia entre el sueño y vigilia: un buen sueño nocturno es imprescindible para estar bien despiertos durante el día. Pero este ritmo no es el único.

Por ejemplo la temperatura corporal disminuye durante la noche y a partir de la mañana siguiente incrementa suavemente para llegar al máximo a finales de la tarde. También siguen un ritmo circadiano las secreciones hormonales, por ejemplo la hormona cortisol que se eleva a primeras horas de la mañana, para permanecer con valores bajos el resto del día, o bien la hormona melatonina que se produce únicamente durante la noche. Así, la noche no es únicamente un tiempo de descanso sino un tiempo en que nuestro cuerpo realiza otras actividades, distintas a las realizadas durante el día, pero igualmente necesarias. El orden temporal que se produce entre todas las funciones del organismo se puede

lower values the rest of the day. The hormone melatonin is produced only at night. As you can see, the night is not only a time to rest but a time when our body does important work that is different from the work it does during the day, but just as necessary. The temporal order performed in all the functions of the body is comparable to an orchestra, where every musician enters at the right time, under the order of the director, the SCN. The SCN generates an endogenous circadian rhythm, but to keep at the same pace that the 24 hour external cycle, it has to get in check every day.

Light is the synchronizer, or agent capable of resetting, the most important biological clock in our body. If the SCN receives the light signals consistently,

every day at the same time, it will be able to maintain every function in the body synchronized, between each other and with the external cycle. On the other hand, if the light signals are irregular, too much light during the night hours, for example, or irregular changes in light such as the ones caused by working night shifts, an alteration in the time structure of the body, or chrono disruption, can Light is perceived through the eyes which are the sensory organs of vision. The eyes have a covering of nerve cells: the retina, highly specialized to perceive specific wave lengths of light. The retina has different types of photoreceptors, which are cells sensible to light. Classic photoreceptors are the cones and rods.

Humans have three types of cones with

maximum sensitivity at wave lengths of close to 570 nm, 530 nm and 430nm, depending on the photo pigment they contain. Stimulation of the cone system enables diurnal vision or photopic vision, in color. Rods, on the other hand, have only one photo pigment, rhodopsin, with a maximum sensitivity of 500 nm. Rods are much more sensitive to light, reacting to very low intensity of light and are responsible for night vision or monochromatic vision. The information received by cones and rods is transmitted by nervous impulses to the occipital area of the cerebral cortex where the visual functions are integrated.

However, light is useful for more than vision. On the last two decades, other type of retinal photoreceptors, containing the photo pigment melanopsin, have been characterized.

This photo pigment is stimulated by light wave lengths of the blue band occur, and it is a risk factor to our health.

Si el NSQ recibe información sobre las señales de luz de forma consistente cada día a la misma hora, podrá mantener todas las funciones del organismo sincronizadas entre ellas y con el ciclo externo. Por el contrario, si las señales de luz son anómalas, por ejemplo por demasiada luz durante la noche, o por cambios de luz anómalos, como puede suceder en trabajadores en turnos de noche rotatorios, puede producirse una alteración de la estructura temporal del organismo, o cronodisrupción, que es factor de riesgo para la salud.

La luz más allá de la visión La luz es captada por los ojos, órganos sensoriales de la visión, que contienen la retina una capa de células nerviosas altamente especializadas para captar luz de determinadas longitudes de onda. En la retina existen distintos tipos de fotoreceptores, células sensibles a la luz. Los fotoreceptors clásicos son los conos y bastones. Los seres humanos tienen tres tipos de conos cuya sensibilidad máxima se produce a longitudes de onda cerca de 570 nm, 530 nm y 430nm, en función del fotopigmento que contengan. La estimulación del sistema de conos permite la visión diurna, en color, o visión fotópica. Los bastones, en cambio poseen únicamente un fotopigmento, la rodopsina, cuya máxima sensibilidad corresponde a los 500 nm. Los bastones son mucho más sensibles a la luz, responden a intensidades de luz muy bajas y son responsables de la visión nocturna, monocromática. La información lumínica captada por

conos y bastones se transmite por vías nerviosas hasta llegar a la zona occipital de la corteza cerebral donde se integran las funciones visuales.

Sin embargo, la luz no sirve únicamente para la visión. En las dos últimas décadas se han ido caracterizando otros tipos de células fotoreceptoras retinales, que contienen el fotopigmento melanopsina, que se estimula principalmente por luz de longitudes de onda de la banda azul del espectro, con un máximo cerca de 480 nm. Estas células, aunque también reciben información de conos y bastones, forman un sistema independiente de la visión, el cual se ha denominado sistema “no formador de imágenes” (NFI). EL sistema NFI activa una serie de estructuras cerebrales que produce otro tipo de respuestas fisiológicas, como la sincronización circadiana, por la acción de la luz sobre los NSQ, o la inhibición de la secreción de melatonina, y que intervienen además en la modulación del

system that has been denominated “Non-Image-Forming System” (NIF). The NIF activates a series of brain structures that produce other physiological responses, such as the circadian synchronization prompted by the action of light on the SCN, or the inhibition of the secretion of melatonin.

Furthermore, it helps modulate sleep, alertness, and even humor and wellbeing. This system is also responsible of the photophobia that sometimes happens with migraines, or the sensitivity to bright light that some people have.

Melatonin, the nocturnal hormone Light Information reaches the SNC through the retina, adjusting the circadian cycles to the external cycles.

The SNC in turn sends information to another brain structure, the pineal gland that secretes melatonin hormone. This substance is completely conditioned by environmental light. Melatonin is secreted in a circadian rhythm that presents low levels during the day and high levels at night, but only in the presence of darkness. If during the night a person is exposed to light the levels of melatonin diminish drastically.

The secretion of Melatonin is, to living beings, the measure of night time.

It has special importance for the adaptation to the seasons of the year;

winter days, with their longer nights, at least in a natural setting, will stimulate the production of more melatonin, which in turn signals to the body the time of year.

Melatonin not only acts on the SNC helping to stabilize the internal clock, it also affects the immune system.

It is antioxidant and neutralizes free radicals. This is why “light during night”, by stopping the production of this substance, can contribute to start or exacerbate disease.

Melatonin levels diminish in direct proportion to the intensity of light, and also depending on wave lengths.

Blue band light inhibits the secretion of nocturnal melatonin more than orange band light.

Artificial light can modify the stability of the circadian rhythms Maintaining the stability of circadian rhythms is important for health. To achieve it, the basic principal is to keep a good light contrast between day and night. Not enough light during the day or too much light during the night can alter the internal temporal order, constituting a serious risk to health.

Circadian maladjustment has been associated to sleep disorders with the consequences it brings, and also to a higher risk of developing cancer, mood alterations and metabolic diseases such

as obesity and diabetes. Some of these disorders have been attributed to low levels of melatonin.

Today, there is enough scientific evidence to know that the amount and the type of light, as well as the times it is received, can alter or help sustain the circadian rhythm. The circadian system is especially sensitive to the light it receives at the beginning and at the end of the day; the light it receives at the end of the day interferes the most with sleep and the secretion of melatonin. As it was mentioned before, the blue band affects the NIF the most.

In general, bright light, including de blue component spectrum, tends to improve alertness during the day; it stimulates cognitive faculties and it even improves sleep during the night.

On the other hand, if used during the night, bright light disrupts the circadian system, it hinders and delays sleep, inhibits the secretion of melatonin and increases body temperature and the nocturnal levels of the hormone cortisol.

Therefore, to preserve the circadian rhythms, light in the evenings should be soft and of low color temperature (yellow, red); light from the blue band should be avoided. The effects of light could also be caused by the screen color of electronic devices. There have been studies that show the effectiveness of screen filters for the blue wave length

sueño, la sensación de alerta e incluso del humor y bienestar. También este sistema es responsable de la fotofobia que puede ocurrir en ataques de migraña o la susceptiblidad a la luz brillante que se da en algunas personas.

Melatonina, la hormona nocturna La información de luz llega al NSQ a través de la retina, permitiendo el ajuste de los ritmos circadianos a los ciclos externos. Los NSQ a su vez envían información hacia otra estructura cerebral, la glándula pineal, que secreta la hormona melatonina. Esta sustancia es extremadamente dependiente de la luz ambiental. La melatonina se secreta en función de un ritmo circadiano presentando niveles bajos durante el día y altos durante la noche, pero solo en presencia de oscuridad. Si durante la noche se recibe luz los niveles de melatonina disminuyen drásticamente.

La secreción de melatonina es para los seres vivos la medida de la noche. Su secreción tiene una especial importancia en la adaptación a las estaciones del año: los días de invierno, con más horas de oscuridad, al menos en un entorno natural, permitirían al organismo producir mas cantidad de melatonina y así reconocer la época del año.

La melatonina actua sobre los NSQ contribuyendo a estabilizar la hora del

reloj interno, pero además tiene propiedades sobre el sistema inmunitario, es neutralizadora de radicales libres y antioxidante. Por este motivo la “luz durante la noche”, al privar al cuerpo de esta sustancia puede contribuir a iniciar o empeorar algunas enfermedades.

La disminución de la hormona melatonina es proporcional a la intensidad de luz, pero al mismo tiempo depende de la longitud de onda, la luz de banda azul inhibe mas la secreción de melatonina nocturna que la banda de luz anaranjada.

La luz artificial puede modificar la estabilidad de los ritmos circadianos Mantener estables los ritmos circadianos es importante para el mantenimiento de la salud. Para ello, el principio básico es mantener un buen contraste de luz entre el día y la noche.

Tanto una falta de luz durante el día como un exceso durante la noche puede alterar el orden temporal interno, constituyendo un riesgo para la salud.

El desajuste circadiano se ha asociado a alteraciones del sueño, con las consecuencias que de ello se derivan, pero también a mayor riesgo a sufrir cáncer, enfermedades metabólicas, como obesidad y diabetes e incluso

a alteraciones del humor. Algunas de estas alteraciones han sido atribuidas a la disminución de la melatonina.

Actualmente hay base científica suficiente para saber que la cantidad, el tipo de luz y la hora en que se recibe puede alterar, o ayudar a mantener, los ritmos circadianos. El sistema circadiano es especialmente sensible a la luz que recibe al inicio y al final del día, siendo la luz recibida al anochecer la que mas interfiere con el sueño y con la secreción de melatonina. Además, como se ha comentado, la banda azul es la que más influye sobre el sistema NFI. De manera general, la luz brillante, que incluye la banda del espectro con componentes azules, durante el día suele mejorar la sensación de alerta, estimula la capacidad cognitiva e incluso favorece el sueño nocturno de las persona. En cambio, durante la noche, altera el sistema circadiano, dificulta y retrasa el sueño, inhibe la secreción de la hormona melatonina e incrementa los niveles nocturnos de la hormona cortisol y de la temperatura corporal. Así, para preservar la ritmicidad circadiana, la luz durante la noche debería ser tenue y de baja temperatura de color (amarillo, rojo), evitando la banda azul. Los efectos de la luz puede también producirse por el color de la

pantalla de aparatos electrónicos. Hay estudios que muestran la efectividad de filtros de pantalla en la longitud de onda azul, para la protección frente a las alteraciones fisiológicas causadas por los efectos la luz durante la noche.

Nuestro organismo no está preparado para recibir cualquier tipo de luz a cualquier hora y por ello debe reflexionarse sobre el tipo de iluminación.

Todavía son pocos los pocos los estudios existentes referentes a la salud en base a la iluminación, si tenemos en cuenta el gran número de horas en que las personas se hallan bajo luz artificial.

Especialmente importante es el estudio de los efectos de la luz en centros de trabajo, o en el caso de trabajadores nocturnos, que mantienen horarios internos contrarios al ciclo natural del día y la noche.

La tecnología moderna de la iluminación, debe conciliar la función visual de la luz con las funciones no visuales. En este sentido todavía quedan muchas incógnitas por resolver. Uno debería preguntarse sobre el papel que ésta tiene sobre los ritmos circadianos. Por

ejemplo, si hay suficiente luz durante el día o demasiada durante la noche, para evitar la cronodisrupción. O bien si se prefiere favorecer la alerta o la somnolencia. También hay que tener en cuenta que hay diferencias interindividuales en lo que refiere a la sensibilidad del sistema NFI, y que la funcionalidad del sistema circadiano cambia a lo largo de la vida, por lo que se debería llegar a poder elegir la luz pensando en un colectivo concreto de personas. Por otra parte, la luz administrada oportunamente puede mejorar la sintomatología del jetlag, o producir mejoras cognitivas, especialmente en personas mayores. Así mismo, el tipo de luz puede contribuir a la calidad de vida de pacientes con determinados tipos de patologías, como la migraña. La luz como agente terapéutico es un campo con mucho recorrido para investigar.

En un futuro, las unidades de medida de iluminación deberían tener en cuenta no solo la luz visible, sino aquella que incide sobre la no formación de imágenes.

En conclusión, la luz no sirve solo

para ver, sino que afecta la fisiología, el reposo, el bienestar o las capacidades cognitivas de las personas. Entre las funciones no visuales, la sincronización circadiana tiene un papel importante para la salud. Por ello resulta necesario llevar a cabo una conducta que permita mantener un orden temporal interno que actúe de manera sincronizada con los ciclos ambientales. Para ello, la luz artificial no debería oponerse a la del entorno en el que hemos evolucionado. Existe tecnología suficiente para elegir la luz apropiada, no solo para cada lugar sino también para cada momento del día. La iluminación ha de ser favorable a la salud de los individuos y no interferir en los ritmos biológicos de las personas, ni de las otras especies. ■

Our body is not prepared to receive every type of light at any time of day; this is why we should consider carefully our type of lighting. There still are not enough studies on the effects of lighting on health considering the large amount of hours that the average person is under artificial light. Of special importance are the studies on the effects of light on the workplace, or on the night shift workers, who develop internal hours that are contrary to the natural day and night cycle.

Modern technology of lighting, must reconcile the visual function of light with its non-visual functions. In this regard, there are many questions in this area that need answers. We should consider the role of light on circadian rhythms.

For example, if we have enough light during the day or too much during the night, so we can avoid chronodisruption;

or if we prefer to be alert or sleepy. The fact that the sensitivity of the NFI can be different in each individual, and that the function of the circadian system changes all through life should be considered.

We should be able to choose lighting with a specific group of people in mind.

Moreover, light delivered at the right moment could mitigate the symptoms of jetlag, or it could enhance cognition, especially in older people. Likewise, a type of light could improve the quality of life in patients with specific pathologies such as migraines. Light as therapeutic agent is a field open to investigation. In the future, units of measure for lighting should take into consideration, not only visible light but also light that affects the non-forming of images.

In conclusion, light is useful for more than vision; it affects the physiology, rest, cognitive faculties and well-being of humans. Among the non-visual functions, the circadian

synchronization has an important role in maintaining health. Therefore it is imperative that we behave in ways that protect our internal temporal order so it can function in synchronicity with the environmental cycles. To promote this, artificial light should not be contrary to the environment in which we have developed. There is enough technology at our disposal to select the appropriate light, not only for every place but also for any time of day. Lighting should be favorable to the health of individuals and should not interfere with their biological rhythms or those of other species. ■

tro año más la revista Nuevo Estilo ha organizado DecorAccion, una feria en la que el diseño y la creatividad hacen florecer al mítico barrio madrileño de las Letras.

Esta vez un equipo formado por Luz & Ambiente Consulting y Vbospagna ha abierto una grieta en el mundo conocido para descubrir un espacio único, Viabizzuno Inworderlight: un mundo paralelo donde luz, color y música se han entrelazado creando una atmósfera mágica de donde no se quiere salir.

Inwonderlight ha llevado al visitante a disfrutar de un día completo en 8 minutos. Un día en el que amanece, corre el agua de las fuentes, vuelan los pájaros, se nubla, truena, llueve, atardece y ya en la noche, la luna nos ilumina mientras

This time a team composed by Luz & Ambiente Consulting and Vbospagna has opened a crack in the world you know so you can discover a unique space, “Viabizzuno inworderlight”: a parallel world where the combination of light, color and music creates a magical atmosphere, you won´t ever want to leave.

Inwonderlight takes the visitor to enjoy a full day in 8 minutes. The sun arises, water runs, birds fly, clouds appear and thunders roar just before the rain. When the sun falls,

Toda la programación ha estado a cargo de Insight, una empresa puntera que ha hecho posibles todos los efectos lumínicos convirtiendo un escenario bien planteado en un mundo mágico. Para orquestar todo el show, Insight ha utilizado el sistema de control Crestron, integrando las diferentes tecnologías que dan vida a este mundo, formado por 3 zonas de audio, 2 reproductores blu-ray, 2 proyectores, mas de 40 encendidos regulados de iluminación, tecnología RGB controlada por DMX, luminarias DALI... Todo totalmente sincronizado para brindar una experiencia lumínica y sensorial.

La instalación ha tenido lugar en el Hub Madrid, un espacio de coworking situado en la calle Gobernador número 26. ■

All the installation has been programmed by Insight, a leading company that made possible all lighting effects turning an apparently normal place into a magical world. To orchestrate the show, Insight has used the Crestron control system , integrating the different technologies to give life to this world, which is made up of 3 audio zones , 2 blu -ray players , 2 projectors, over 40 regulated lighting switchers controlled by DMX , DALI lighting , RGB technology ... all fully synchronized to provide a light and sensory experience.

The installation took place in Madrid Hub, a coworking space located on 26th Street Governador. ■
