Comparative Levelling

Many of the literacy programmes in this catalogue follow custom band colouring/levelling respective to the suggested reading ages of the material. To allow quick and easy referencing, we have applied a comparative levelling to those programmes loosely based around the PM colour scale. You'll see our colour coding running down the side of certain programmes – labelled 'comparative levelling'.

INTTRODUCTION

An introduction to guided reading

Literacy Lift Off

Also known as Power Hour, Station Teaching or Guided Reading.

This popular literacy intervention initiative brings a lot of the theory of Reading Recovery™ to the classroom. Children are given plenty of opportunities to read books at their own level of competency and gradually lift the complexity of what they can do in both reading and writing. This has been proven to be highly successful in improving children’s literacy levels.

“The ultimate goal of guided reading is to help children learn how to use independent reading strategies effectively.”

– Fountas and Pinnell 1996:2

Reading Recovery is a patented programme with training courses available at education centres around the country. Developed in New Zealand by Marie Clay 30 years ago, Reading Recovery is an effective early intervention literacy programme widely implemented in English-speaking countries throughout the world. The goal of Reading Recovery is to dramatically reduce the number of students who have difficulty learning to read and write. Professional development is an essential part of Reading Recovery.

What is Guided Reading?

Guided Reading is summarised by the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) as follows:  Teacher works with 4–6 students in each group  Using levelled/banded readers and multiple copies of these readers  Pupils are grouped according to similarities in reading and development and instructional reading levels  Teacher introduces/consolidates strategies and concepts to support independent reading  Every child reads and is supported by the teacher

“The right book in the hands of the right child at the right time.” – Stephen Graham, Literacy Expert, Melbourne, Australia Getting Started

The backbone of any literacy initiative is a systematic approach, benchmarking children to determine their starting point and identifying and improving individual children’s ability based on their instructional level of reading rather than their age or class level. Our local Sales Representatives have vast experience in working with schools undertaking such initiatives and are here to advise. Look to us as the experts in advising the solution to your needs in the classroom. Contact your Folens representative to schedule a Literacy consultation or visit folens.ie/literacy for information and starter tips for Literacy Lift Off in your school.

INTRODUCTION

5 Top Tips

While working with international literacy experts, we have identified 5 Best Practice Tips that are useful at all levels of literacy scheme development. a big, broad excellently levelled programme 1. Have at the core of a reading programme and then supplement this strong core with other well-levelled books.  A child gets the best result if they always start with the core programme.  This core programme teaches them the basics with a consistency of approach.  This builds confidence and then the capability at each level before bridging out to other titles and programmes. For example, schools may choose PM, Flying Start, Engage or Collins Big Cat for the core of their reading initiative and then supplement with similarly graded alternatives. This could include any of the above, or other programmes such as Sails, Red Rocket or Nelson Literacy Directions. Multiple reading genres/text types are key to developing literacy skills.

2.

 This is especially true in upper primary.  Go beyond the ubiquitous narrative text style that dominates in primary but doesn’t prepare children for reading other genres, so they struggle later.

results are achieved when children 3. Best read broadly at every level.  It is not a race to the next level. There is no point reading without comprehension.  A wide range of titles across a broad range of genres at each level helps build skills.  Varied questioning styles help to ensure comprehension is tested all the time. Independent reading should be at two levels below 4. the child’s current reading level.  This ensures the child is able to read independently and can practise this with ease.  ‘Take home’ readers fall into this category, not just independent readers in class.  Help parents to understand that the purpose is to develop reading and comprehension skills by reading within the child’s capability. The parent’s role is to encourage and praise their child in doing this. all schemes are consistently levelled 5. toNota common reading recovery standard.  Readers in a reading programme need to be levelled consistently for optimum results.  If inconsistent with the core programme, resolve the issue by adding a simple sticker with the common standard reading recovery level to the book.  Levelling can be easily done using Which Book and Why (March 2014) available to buy at Folens.ie/shop  Have at least one of these in the school to support levelling all common titles quickly.  Focuses investment in supplementary titles for reading programmes to avoid over purchasing of one type/level and not enough of others.

PM WRITING

Teaching children how to write in different text types and genres PM Writing is the only comprehensive levelled writing programme on the market. It is designed to explicitly teach the essential skills students require to compose texts.  Exemplars for Teaching Writing are big books which present and de-construct text types, highlight key language features and include teacher notes and a CD for use on the interactive whiteboard.  The 94 levelled readers model text types and are designed for guided writing and independent reading. Levels 1–15 are single text types and levels 16–30 are dual text types. The texts provide examples of genre, text type, text form and text structure, and thereby assist in linking reading and writing processes.  The accompanying Teachers' Resource Books contain comprehensive lesson plans, instructional DVDs and CD-ROMs. The DVD shows literacy experts teaching writing in real classrooms while the CDs contain templates for all text types for whole class teaching for use on an interactive whiteboard or projector.

“We have found the PM Writing materials to be very specific, focused and targeted to the teaching of writing genre. We highly recommend them.” – Anne Buggie, Scoil Mhuire, Church Avenue , Portlaoise, Co. Laois

FOLENS LITERACY EVENTS

Folens Literacy Events

As education facilitators, Folens endeavour to provide quality, engaging events and workshops with world-class speakers. Our aim is to empower teachers and give an insight into topical issues facing education. More and more schools are facing challenges in their classrooms which could be helped by introducing a literacy initiative. Folens are committed to providing you with services to aid these initiatives. As part of that vision, whenever possible, we bring the expertise of international literacy experts to Ireland to deliver workshops and events around the country.

In 2015 Folens partnered with local education centers to deliver 21 Literacy workshops throughout Ireland.

Each workshop was designed to address common situations in today’s schools.

These workshops were delivered by international Literacy experts Sue Bodman and Glen Franklin, authors of Which Book and Why, and by Stephen Graham a Professional Development Literacy Consultant working with Cengage Learning and University of Melbourne.

“I really liked having the opportunity to talk to other teachers and there was ample opportunity to view the books and get any information required.”

FLYING START TO LITERACY

The simplest way to introduce a literacy initiative in your classroom Flying Start is a comprehensive core early literacy program that supports the systematic development of reading. The easy to use sets of resources includes paired readers and corresponding lesson plans. Paired readers (fiction and non-fiction) present key content words and high-frequency words that allow beginner pupils to develop a range of different reading strategies. A comprehensive lesson plan is available for every pair of readers, giving the teacher a unique level of instruction and support. These lesson plans contain before, during and after reading activities. At Emergent level, Vocabulary Starters are available to build vocabulary from an early age.

“The Flying Start readers are very nicely and realistically illustrated. There is very good reinforcement of vocabulary throughout the levels. The factual information in the non-fiction books is presented in a creative way which is appealing to the students.”

– Joan Conway (Principal), Cornafulla NS, Athlone, Co. Roscommon
