Dr. Romeya recently performed the first thoracic da Vinci XI robotic surgery in the region here at Research! Our robotics team has been training with Dr. Krishnadasan, a cardiothoracic surgeon from Tacoma, WA and Dr. Zevos, a thoracic and cardiac surgeon from New York. I’m so proud of our incredible physician leaders and surgical teams. More and more, we’re the first and only performing some of these new life-changing procedures.

The results from our 2016 Employee Engagement Survey are very helpful as we look at immediate actions and priorities for the future. Our overall score improved from last year and we met our goal! The changes we are making take time but we’re on our way to becoming the most preferred place to work in Kansas City.

Next year I think we will do even better. Now it’s time to go to work on what we learned from you. You’ll be hearing more as we implement your suggestions to make Research Medical Center an even better place to work.

Welcome New Providers Salena Fu, MD has joined Research Medical Center as a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in oculoplastics, bringing more than eight years of cosmetic and oculoplastic surgery experience. Dr. Fu earned her medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed an internal medicine internship at UCLA/ Olive View Program. Following her internship, Dr. Fu completed an ophthalmology residency at Baylor College of Medicine/ Cullen Eye Institute and a neuro-oculoplastics fellowship at University of Texas, Southwestern.

Peter Van Veldhuizen, MD began seeing patients at Sarah Cannon at Research Medical Center in July. Dr. Van Veldhuizen is a board-certified and fellowship-trained hematologist/ oncologist, specializing in genitourinary oncology. Dr. Van Veldhuizen has more than 20 years of hematology/oncology experience and clinical trial experience. His clinical expertise in genitourinary malignancies includes; bladder, kidney, testicular, non-malignant tumors of the urinary tract and male reproductive system and Von Hippel Lindau disease. Dr. Van Veldhuizen earned his medical degree from University of South Dakota School of Medicine. He completed both his residency and fellowship training at University of Kansas Medical Center.

Welcome New Leaders Jo Hilbrenner, NP has joined Research Medical Center as nurse practitioner liaison. Jo comes to Research with more than 30 years of cardiology nursing experience, nine of those years as a nurse practitioner specializing in cardiothoracic surgery, electrophysiology and management of chronic conditions. As a nurse practitioner liaison, Jo will help grow professional practice for NPs within our Physician Services Group (PSG) and with our hospital-based NPs. Additionally, Jo is working with cardiologist Dr. Lawrence and Golden Valley Memorial / Belton Regional-based cardiologist Dr. Blackburn to further develop hypertension and cardiac wellness programs to serve a larger region.

Pam Gavin has joined Research Medical Center’s Physician Services Group (PSG) as area practice manager, overseeing senior health and surgical practices. Pam brings with her more than 25 years of hospital-based management and leadership experience. Her most recent position was at St. Joseph Medical Center where she managed the family practice clinics.

Pam majored in medical billing and coding at Cox University. Continuing her education, Pam obtained her Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification and Certified Physician Practice Management (CPPM) certification.

Neuro Oncologist Brings Innovative Treatment to Research When Traci Montes came to Research Medical Center’s Emergency Room with a headache late last year, she had never heard of a neuro oncologist or Dr. Amandeep Kalra. Now, she’s singing his praises.

Traci was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor. A few days later, neurosurgeon Dr. Jonathan Chilton performed surgery (Gross Total Resection) to remove the tumor and surgery went very well. She is thankful to Dr. Chilton. At this point, Dr. Kalra got involved in her care.

Then, suddenly Traci was learning all about the latest treatments and techniques to suppress her brain cancer. Dr. Kalra suggested the Optune, a new external device (requires brain mapping) that produces wave-like electric fields to treat glioblastoma. The device works by creating low-intensity electric fields that help slow or stop cancer cells from dividing or multiplying.

Traci began chemotherapy and contacted her insurance company about treatment with Optune. She was quickly approved for the treatment and began wearing the scalp device several hours every day, as recommended by Dr. Kalra.

Back to full time work. She is still actively in treatment under Dr. Kalra’s care.

Traci now feels very well informed and educated about her Glioblastoma.

She is thankful that she met Research Medical Center’s Brain and Spine Tumor Program expert team, especially Dr. Kalra and Dr. Chilton.

Traci has agreed to share her journey through treatment using the Optune. Look for her next chapter soon.

HCA Midwest Health Rises to the Top, Again!

For the tenth consecutive year, HCA Midwest Health earned the distinguished honor of being named top fundraiser for the American Heart Association’s Heart and Stroke Walk. Together, HCA Midwest Health’s seven hospitals raised more than $87,000. Research employees’ fundraising efforts led to a contribution of more than $18,500 with 11 teams. Toni Brooks from food services and her Food and Nutrition Team were the top fundraising team at Research.

Dr. Muther Honored for his Leadership Richard Muther, MD was recently honored by the National Kidney Foundation for his Outstanding Leadership on behalf of patients and other nephrologists nationally.

In 1980, Dr. Richard Muther founded Kidney Associates of Kansas City. The practice of eight nephrologists and two nurse practitioners work in conjunction with the Transplant Institute of Research Medical Center, Select Specialty, Kindred and Dialysis Clinics Incorporated. Dr. Muther has set an exemplary standard of care for the practice by demonstrating his commitment to the highest level of medical care for each patient with a foundation of advocacy for the patient.

Selfless Dedication Recognized Vascular surgeon Edward Higgins, MD and his wife Kim recently received the 2016 Cominelllis Award for Compassionate Service to Humanity. This prestigious award recognizes their selfless dedication to providing medical care to people in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Dr. Higgins and Kim recently made a trip to Haiti to deliver medical supplies to a surgical hospital their volunteer efforts have helped to build. The hospital is currently under construction and is scheduled to open later this summer.

Research Volunteer is 95 Years-Young Ambassador Gerry Sirls recently celebrated her 95th Birthday! Gerri has been volunteering at Research for more than 30 years, providing a “special touch”of helpfulness and kindness to patients, visitors and staff.

PUC Nurse Swimming Her Way to Victory Pat Conley, RN on the 4th Floor recently made a name for herself at the 2016 Corporate Challenge swim competition.

Pat is not only a certified nurse on the 4th floor, working hard to ensure patients receive the best care possible, she is also a competitive swimmer. Her hard work in the pool led her to winning a medal in all five Corporate Challenge swimming events in which she participated. Pat placed second in the 50 yd butterfly and third place in 50 yd backstroke, 50 yd breaststroke, 50 yd freestyle and the 100 meter medley.

Pat is a member of the United States Masters Swim Team where she has competed in three swim meets. We are proud of her accomplishments and encourage Pat Conley to keep swimming!

Finance Groups Take Their Conversations Off-Line On June 16, finance groups from across HCA Midwest Health hung up their phones, powered down their computers and made their way to Swope Park for a finance meet and greet picnic.

Kevin O’Brien, controller at Research and his finance team organized this first ever finance picnic, inviting finance groups from across HCA Midwest Health. The Reason? As part of rounding on employees, it was mentioned that they communicate with their counterparts almost every day, however most of them have never met.

“It was wonderful to gather with peers and meet face-to-face after years of talking over the phone and exchanging emails” said Kevin.

DAISY Award Honoree Megan Douglas, RN 3 North “I was hospitalized for three days with a bite that had gotten infected.

Megan was my day nurse all three days. She made my stay very enjoyable. I am a vegetarian and she went to extraordinary lengths my first and second day to make sure my meals were correct. Megan always came in with a smile, was very thorough in explaining everything that would be done to me, and made me feel like I was special. If I didn’t know any better, I would think I had been her only patient. I appreciate being treated so warmly and feeling like I was never a burden. When I was released, I told Megan that I didn’t know how to find where I parked. She helped me find my car. I was not extremely sick or in a great deal of pain but this nurse made me feel as if I were very important. I had a lovely stay- thank you Megan!”

Your staff are incredibly caring, qualified and compassionate. My mother consistently brags about the care provided at Research and we experienced it firsthand. We are family of faith and we believe God led us to Research’s ICU. We immediately felt at peace our mom reached those doors. We want to express our gratitude to all of your staff who work on the behalf on those in critical need. Specifically, we would love to highlight the ICU, Dr. Raul Morffi and Dr. Nichole VanDuyne, 4th floor nurses Ashley and Tracey, respiratory, physical therapy and many others.”

ER “On June 6, I went to the emergency room at Research Medical Center for a broken finger. It was one of my most pleasant trips to an emergency room. All of the staff was polite and efficient and the system worked well. I received the necessary treatment very quickly and without any undue hassles. This hospital is close to my home. It’s nice to know that they’re in the neighborhood if I need them.”

4 West, ER, ICU, Select Speciality and KCFD “I wanted to let you know about the phenomenal care my dad received at Research and then at Select Specialty.

My dad was originally hospitalized at another (non-HCA) hospital with a ruptured appendix and bowel. He also suffered from severe COPD and Emphysema. His stay at this hospital was scary for all of us; if he needed a procedure, he would have to be transported to a different facility by the Kansas City Fire Department. By the grace of God, my father was sent to Research Medical Center’s ER after pulling out his catheter. The ER doctor immediately began treating my dad for pneumonia, something that he had been struggling with for months. At this point, we begged the staff not to send my dad back to the other hospital, and they admitted him to the ICU at Research that day. For the first time in two months, my dad looked clean and peaceful. The ICU room itself had a very calming effect. That night, my mother and I were able to go home for the first time in months, confident that my dad was going to be in good hands. I wish I had the names of all the staff who cared for my father in the ER, ICU, and 4 West, as they all deserve recognition for excelling in empathy, professionalism, and for providing top quality patient care. A few weeks later, my dad was released to Select Specialty on the third floor. Again, we were met with a very caring and attentive staff, who did everything they could to help my dad. My mom and I were put at ease and confident that my dad was safe and in good hands. Sadly, my dad finally took his last breath after a long fight. I can’t emphasize enough to you how much we appreciate each and every person we encountered at Research and Select Specialty. Please pass on my families sincere thanks to all the staff who took such wonderful care of my father. Thank you so much.”

A successful ECHO week is in the books! With more than 700 Research employees donating to The Research Foundation, the 2016 ECHO Drive signed on 130 new contributing members who are supporting the Foundation’s programs and will help Research employees “ride life’s waves.” Employees Contributing to Help Others (ECHO) consists of employees at Research Medical Center’s Meyer Campus and Brookside Campus and Research Psychiatric Center who support the Employee Assistance Fund and other health education and scholarship programs funded by The Research Foundation. Thank you to all of those who helped make the week just “beachy!”

Healthy Habits Superfood Spotlight - Melons The July Superfood of the Month is melon!

Melons are high in essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium, and low in fat and calories. In fact, one cup of watermelon contains only 50 calories! Lycopene, found in watermelon, is responsible for giving the fruit its reddish hue and has been shown to reduce risk of developing heart disease and certain cancers.

Melons are in season during the summer months, making it the perfect sweet treat to cool down with. Stop by the cafeteria throughout the month of July to get your fix of delicious and nutritious melon!

Celebrating National Safety Month The National Safety Council designates June as “National Safety Month.” In recognition, the employee health department distributed safety educational material to employees. The information included slips, trips and falls prevention; ways to make safety a habit; avoiding aches and pains, and using the correct equipment to move patients safely. Hand hygiene towelettes were also available!

In the contest the first place was Garry Helm, maintenance engineer and second place was Tom Heck, critical care technician.
