2 Dickensian Steampunk Fayre Programme 2013

Welcome one and all to this year’s Wymondham Dickensian Steam Punk Christmas Fayre. As you may well of heard this year has a different twist, ‘Steam Punk’, it’s like the Victorian era had never ended and everything is steam powered! This year’s fayre has changed to a Saturday, giving everybody in the town a chance to come along, with the festivities starting at 2pm. Yes, that ‘chap’ in the red suit will be with us, and of course he will be in his grotto, so come and relive your childhood and take you children to meet him. There will be traditional Christmas carols from the schools and the pipe band will be there and also the Rock Choir and the Norfolk Schools Brass Band to keep everyone in good spirits. You will be entertained by a traditional Punch & Judy, Magic Dave and Fool Hardy Steam Punk Characters. There will also be busking, face painting, various competitions as well as craft stalls and a variety of food stalls. The magic of the festive season will continue when ‘Buttons’ from the Theatre Royal Pantomime will join the Mayor with the switch on of the Christmas lights. Enter into the spirit of the day by dressing in a Dickensian Steam Punk Theme. This program has been produced by Iceni magazine and is sponsored by traders of Wymondham through the advertising they have placed. They would like to thank you for your custom in 2013 and look forward to your continued support in the following year. The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all sponsors, and wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Event Committee.

Just imagine…… You are living in a world where the microchip has never been discovered. Yes we have mobile phones and computers etc - but they are machines, driven by miniaturised clockwork and steam engines. Gadgets and gizmos are part of everyday life, and Zeppelins are the preferred mode of international transport. The old Victorian values and dress codes are still followed, of course. Why change them? However it is now more fashionable to wear your corset as an outer garment. Everyone is very polite to each other. A gentleman does not open a door for a lady because she is a lady. It’s because he is a gentleman. But there is another side. Adventuring - HG Wells, Jules Verne and Conan Doyle were not writers of fiction. They were first rate journalists. Time travel is a reality –and the Lost World does exist, where those of us that can afford it can hunt real dinosaurs. Nerf guns are the preferred weapons of choice.

Welcome to the amazing world of Steampunk, where everything is possible..... Dickensian Steampunk Fayre Programme 2013 3

Message From The Town Mayor Hello one and all I would like to invite you all to join me at the Dickensian Steampunk Christmas Fayre on Saturday November 30th, 2pm - 6pm. Come along and be part of a truly magical afternoon that will start your Christmas celebrations with a bang. Can I also take this opportunity to offer a huge vote of thanks to the hard working committee for stepping in and taking up the challenge to make this fayre happen and enabling the community to come together. I wish you all a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Dianne Fernee - Mayor of Wymondham

Welcome to this year’s Dickensian. Earlier this year I thought it would not happen but, in June, an appeal brought together volunteers from the Wymondham Community who wanted to take the event forward into a new era. Moving to a Saturday afternoon, when the town is normally quiet, so working Mums and Dads can bring along their younger children and older folks, who do not venture out after dark, have the opportunity to attend. New rules on stalls introducing more arts and crafts and an artisan food section to tantalise the taste buds. Traditional music, street entertainers and lots lots more make up the afternoon, all with a Steampunk twist - if you are not sure what Steampunk is then come along and find out! Sponsorship from both Town & District Councils, local businesses plus the Lions and volunteers have helped put together the programme. Many other events will be happening in the town following on from the Fayre making the day a really exciting start to the Christmas season. Enjoy! From Lion President & Fayre Committee Chair John Wilde

“Blankogram” Competition Your task is to solve a 24 letter anagram. Unfortunately you don’t know what any of the letters are! But if you get it right you could win a half case of wine (6 bottles) donated by The Feathers, so it’s worth a go. First you’ll have to find the letters, and they will be openly displayed in the windows of shops and businesses throughout town from the morning of November 30th. These include premises on Back Lane, Pople Street, Town Green, Middleton Street, Damgate Street and Fairland Street. Each shop or business will be allocated one letter only, so if you find several shops displaying the same letter then that letter appears more than once in the answer. During the day further clues will be released in shop windows, which will become progressively easier. The answer does of course blend in with our theme and as an example if the answer was “The Old Curiosity Shop” the blankogram would have been 19 letters, and the first clue released would be 3, 3, 9, 4. Clues such as “Might have killed an aged cat” would follow. Once the shops have shut, the pubs and clubs will be given further clues to display within their premises. To simplify everything, all the letters and clues will be on the same size and colour paper ie yellow A5. So simply all you have to do is to rearrange the 24 letters to give a word, or group of words and text the answer to 07542290397. Normal network rates will apply at all times. The first correct answer received will be the winner, and Dianne Fernee as Mayor will be asked to verify this. As soon as practical the winner will then receive a return text, asking them to supply their name and address and the Feathers will be then notified of whom to expect. This competition is open to anyone over the age of 18 and the winner must be able to collect the prize in person. Proof of identity may be required All clues will be later published on the internet both on the event Facebook page and a dedicated page www.historictraders.co.uk/wdscomp.html. This page is also accessible through the QR code displayed on the Yellow A5 posters. Once the winner has been announced the answer (and the relevance of the clues) will also be published. Unless privacy is requested the name of the winner will be published through the internet ASAP, and later in the press. Dickensian Steampunk Fayre Programme 2013 25

Cinderella Competition It’s coming up to the Christmas season again, which can only mean one thing - Norwich Theatre Royal’s pantomime is back! This year’s offering is that old favourite Cinderella, and you and your family have the chance to win tickets to see it for free. We’re giving away a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) to see Cinderella on Thursday 19th December at 7.30pm. This year’s cast is headed by Sheila Ferguson, playing the sassy Fairy Godmother. Sheila is familiar to millions as one third of the Three Degrees, with her hits including When Will I See You Again and Woman In Love, and returns to Norwich Theatre Royal after appearing here in Soul Train in 2000. She will star opposite former soap hunk Matt Milburn in the role of Prince Charming. Matt shot to fame as Joe Spencer in Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks and swapped Manchester for Yorkshire when he returned to our screens playing Nicky Pritchard in Emmerdale. The role of Cinderella is played by up-and-coming star Ruth Betteridge. Ruth has starred in musical theatre across the country, in roles such as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and Maria in West Side Story. She recently won the Gilbert and Sullivan International Festival Song Competition. And the list of names doesn’t end there with panto favourite Richard Gauntlett returning to Norwich Theatre Royal as Buttons, star of Wicked and former Theatre Royal dancer Michelle Pentecost playing Dandini and Ian Belsey and Graeme Henderson as the Ugly Sisters all throwing on their costumes and treading the boards this Christmas season. The pantomime will be on stage December 17th - January 19th. For your chance to win this super prize, all you have to do is answer the following question and email your answer to: competitions@icenimagazine.co.uk by 13th December 2013. At which event does Cinderella meet Prince Charming? a) The Prince’s Tea Party b) The Prince’s Ball c) The Prince’s Egg and Spoon Race For more details or to book tickets call the box office on 01603 630000. Conditions: Cannot be exchanged for a cash alternative. Prizes: 1x4 tickets to see Cinderella at 7:30pm on Thursday 19th December. Dickensian Steampunk Fayre Programme 2013 27
