Welcome to Iceni Magazine, Thank you for picking up issue 2 of Iceni Magazine, if you haven’t managed to pick up our Launch issue, its still available to view online, at www.icenimagazine.co.uk. Our launch issue was met with an extremely positive reception. Much time and effort went into raising the profile of our launch issue, prior to release and we were extremely pleased with how successful it has been. We had many vendors who stocked the magazine and as our official stockists, they have been listed on our website. June will, hopefully along with better weather, bring Norfolk Week (23rd – 30th June) for one of our Stockists - The Surrey Tavern, who opened its doors on 23rd June 2012, they are celebrating with a week’s worth of festivities, showcasing everything that Norfolk has to offer. From outstanding ales, to award winning sausages from a local Norfolk butcher. July sees another packed month, including – Farm animal week, as featured in this month’s issue. Farm Animal Week is an annual awareness-raising week, which encourages shoppers to choose higher welfare products, such as Freedom Foods. These foods ensure animals are treated humanely, and that the farmers rearing these animals are rewarded for such practises. Our 4 featured chefs, are all passionate about this cause and have included some tasty recipes, which make the most of freedom foods. We would also like to welcome on-board, our regular columnist – Keri Beevis. Keri featured in issue one, with the recent release of her new thriller novel – Dead Letter Day. Keri, runner up in the Rethink Press New Novels 2012 Competition, had her novel published in March 2013 and has been riding high on the wave of her success. Having read Dead Letter Day here at Iceni headquarters, we can’t wait for her next novel release. In the meantime, you can catch Keri, in her regular column only here at Iceni! This month’s book review is from another Norwich Author – Mark King. Mark’s book has caused quite a stir in the world of literature, set sometime in the near future, it can be enjoyed by all ages and has been compared to the successful series of novels, the hunger games. We have 3 signed copies to give away, so be sure to enter our competition. We hope you enjoy issue two, if you would like to leave feedback on our magazine, or if there is something you would like to see included, please visit our Facebook page, we would love to hear what you think.

East Anglian Air Ambulance Given the all clear to start first UK night air ambulance missions More lives will be saved across the eastern region now that a dedicated air ambulance has made history and been granted permission to fly helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) missions at night. Following 18 months of demanding hard work from the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) and its aircraft operator Bond Air Services, the Charity can now begin flying to incidents which occur during the hours of darkness using Night Vision Imaging Systems (NVIS), the first dedicated air ambulance in England and Wales to be allowed to do so. Tim Page, Chief Executive of EAAA, said: “We are all extremely proud to be able to say that EAAA is the first dedicated air ambulance in the country to be granted permission to fly at night but, above all, this is great news for the people of East Anglia as there is evidence that this development in operations will mean that more lives will be saved across the region.” The Charity believes PAGE
6
that it will be able to attend around 30% more missions, helping an estimated 300 more patients a year now it is able to operate in the dark as well as daylight hours. Mr Page continued: “It has been a concern of the Charity for a long time that patients who become ill or injured during daylight hours have been able to benefit from a service which has not been available to those who are involved in incidents and accidents in the dark. Many people have worked hard to resolve this problem and we are all extremely pleased that, no matter when someone needs our skilled crew to help them, our EAAA air ambulance, will be available.” EAAA is sent to incidents by the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) which has the responsibility of deploying the air ambulance to patients who need assistance from the highly skilled crews aboard the aircraft. The ability to be able to send
these expert teams to incidents which occur at night, as well as during the day, is going to be of great benefit to the service as, Dr Scott Turner, Deputy Medical Director at EEAST, explains: “A commonly used phrase in the ambulance service is “getting the right resource, to the right patient, in the right time frame, every time”. “Our air ambulances provide a highly skilled clinical team to our most critically ill and injured patients. Their skills complement those provided by our highly dedicated road staff. A few minutes can make a huge difference to some of these patients with problems such as an on-going bleed around the brain. The ability
to get the lifesaving skills of these teams to where they are needed in the dark as well as the day can only be of benefit to the patient. The helicopter will also, where appropriate, be able to transport the patient to the right hospital to treat their life threatening problem. Decreasing the time before a patient receives definitive care, such as releasing the pressure on the brain and stopping the bleeding, can have significant benefits for the patient.” Flying at night means that the Charity will now be able to operate in the dark in the same way that it does during day light hours. It will be able to fly to the incident and land as close as possible, treat

patients at the scene and convey them to the most appropriate hospital for their needs aboard the aircraft if required; something not being done by any other air ambulance in the country. The process began back in 2011 when Bond Flight Operations Team submitted a safety case to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requesting permission to undertake HEMS missions at night using NVIS. Since then, the EAAA has worked with the CAA, Bond and EEAST to ensure that both the aircraft and crew are ready for the UK’s first night time HEMS missions; a process which is extremely different to operating during daylight hours. Underpinning this significant advancement in air ambulance services is Bond’s commitment to delivering the highest levels of safety in the specification of equipment, procedures and training. These form the core elements of their ‘MissionSafe’ focus. In order to operate at night, the aircraft is equiped with an instrumentation system and external lighting compatible with Night Vision Goggles (NVGs). The first step of this process was to install various items of special equipment (including moving maps, engine Usage Monitoring System and a Powerline Detection System) on the aircraft, and to
Issue 02 2013
modify standard items of equipment to make them NVIS compatible. Once specified, the aircraft, its systems and the operating procedures required full certification by the European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA) and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) before the aircraft could undertake night HEMS missions. Bond also undertook extensive training for both the pilots and the HEMS crew members who will undertake missions using NVGs. Chris Greenhill, Managing Director, Bond Air Services said: “We are delighted to be the first UK air ambulance operator to have received both European and CAA certification to operate night HEMS flights. To achieve this we drew on extensive in-house expertise at Bond, as well as the experience from other Avincis Group companies operating night HEMS flights across southern Europe”. Mr Greenhill continued: “Clearly the focus on safety is paramount and we believe that the design of the aircraft, its systems and our operating procedures coupled with a rigorous training schedule will ensure that we can undertake these missions safely at night”. The vision of flying at night has been supported by those at Cambridge Airport and
the Marshall Group who have accommodated the Charity over the last two and a half years. Terry Holloway, Group Support Executive for Marshall of Cambridge said: “We strongly support the EAAA and we are thrilled with their new night time capability. We look forward to the extension of their valuable lifesaving service.” Ultimately, the Charity’s ability to help more people who need emergency medical care is down to local people as Peter Rosenvinge, Director of Fundraising for EAAA, explains: “This is a remarkable achievement for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and will mean that the Charity is able to help many more people who fall ill or are injured in this part of the country. While there are many people behind the scenes who have worked tirelessly to get to this point, the Charity is only able to embark on night missions because of the generous support of the public who fund the service. EAAA can’t possibly thank them enough for everything they
have done. Because of them, more lives will be saved.” Later this year, the Charity will take delivery of a further night capable helicopter which is slightly larger than the one currently in operation and will allow the Charity to carry up to two patients if required. The current night capable helicopter based at Cambridge Airport will be relocated to Norwich Airport, giving the Charity the option of operating two helicopters at night should the service be required. POPULAR KATE’S VISIT TO NEW HORSE CHARITY CENTRE A SUCCESS Coronation Street actress Kate Ford, who plays villain Tracy Barlow in the popular soap, visited Norfolk recently to officially open the brand new Redwings Visitor Centre at Aylsham. Nearly 1000 people came to meet her. The award-winning actress has a strong connection to Redwings, aside from her own love of horses. Kate’s own pony Roxy was retired to Redwings Horse Sanctuary in 2004; the actress has always been a big fan of the charity’s work and has kept in contact with the team, even after Roxy sadly passed away. She agreed to be part of a special Fun Day at Aylsham on Saturday 27 April to help celebrate the new visitor centre’s opening. Kate has played Tracy Barlow - the daughter of Deirdre and Ken with a complicated love life and history of selling her daughter, ruining wedding days, blackmail, murder and prison - since 2002. She’s the fourth actress to play Tracy Barlow since the character’s birth in 1977, and is arguably the most memorable. “It was great to see so many people come to meet Kate and some of our fifty Aylsham residents,” commented Redwings Chief Executive Lynn Cutress. “934 people came which was an incredible turn-out;
Kate was very generous with her time in not only cutting the ribbon for us but chatting with all the Coronation Street fans who came to meet her. She also met many of the horsey and donkey residents as well.” In total, the charity has over 1200 residents plus a further 500 in Guardian homes. Kate commented that she enjoyed her visit to Redwings: “It was a lovely day which I really enjoyed; it was brilliant to see so many people come to support the work of Redwings!” The Fun Day included the announcement of some new Adoption Club stars, pony grooming and a ‘walk and talk’ around the new site. A new Wildlife Walk that incorporates one of the two nature ponds on the site was also open. Visitors to the open day also got the chance to look at the new café, gift shop and information centre.

R
edwell brewery was set up by a group of friends with a passion for great tasting beer.
is so forward thinking with producing quality cask beer, it was a crying shame that it still lacked anybody brewing keg beer and real lager. When we We travelled the found our site down country visiting craft in Trowse it was just breweries a couple of perfect - the history years ago and tasted of brewing in our city some really incredible goes back hundreds of beers that were years, and after a little made by some of the research we think we breweries that are at are the first lager to the forefront of a be brewed in the city really innovative new for over 30 years since wave of British brewing, Watney Mann closed which is occurring at down in the 80’s. It’s the moment. I felt back really exciting for us then that the craft keg beer industry was definitely a really fresh, vibrant and exciting business to get into. Norwich is full of real ale and the rural areas surrounding Norwich are filling up with micro breweries brewing real ale. City of Ale and CAMRA do an amazing job in promoting real ale and supporting pubs and independent breweries, but considering Norwich PAGE

to be able to reinvent some of that brewing tradition so close to the city centre. We wanted to make a beer that everyone can enjoy, and that Norwich can be really proud of. Redwell brewery is unique in Norwich in the fact that we are focussing on Lager. We have launched with 3 lagers and 2 ales all packaged in kegs. A 4% Craft Pilsner, 5% Original Lager, a 4.6% Steam Lager, 4% Pale Ale and a 6% IPA. We really
respect what CAMRA as done for the British brewing industry, and allowing drinkers to get their hands on good beer, but ale isn’t for everyone - we also wanted to rise up against the flavourless pint and bring the consumer an option of hand crafted real lager. CAMRA’s philosophy a generation ago was to rebel against the prevalence of mass produced beer whilst there is now an intoxicating range of real ale available, the big brewers still rule the roost with lagers and are still pumping out oceans of weak fizzy pop, which drinkers seem to accept without question, thinking there is no alternative. I think nowadays people are growing tired of the flavourless standard pint of Carling and Carlsberg.

David Our Brewer:
Our Branding:
We met David when we interviewed him, it was a moment I will always remember when he left we were all unanimous and excited because we knew he was the one! Unlike other candidates, David actually interviewed us, he immediately understood us as individuals and understood what is was that we were trying to do. It just clicked.
We approached the Ideas Factory at NUA (Norwich University of Art) about our branding and packaging and they rolled the challenge out to their 3rd year graphic design students. We were so lucky to have around 20 truly talented students working on our branding and decided to go with a group of guys who came up with the logo and type that we have used. Their bottle design is amazing, it’s unusual and clever, and completely fits with what we are doing as a brewery. The labels are in the shape of a deli ticket, which chimes with the idea that you have to be patient to get good quality.
Most importantly he was absolutely up for the challenge. David is British but has been brewing in Scandinavia for the last 25 years for Jamtlands Brewery. David has been winning brewing awards in Sweden, including best lager, for 15 years at the internationally acclaimed; Stockholm beer festival. It’s great to have the enthusiasm of someone who has been working in a country where they actually respect lager and produce kegged beer that everyone enjoys drinking and is proud of.
One of the biggest differences between Redwell Beer and commercial lager is that big breweries push their beers through special machines and use all sorts of chemicals to enable them to get the beer made in about three days, which is why it tastes so awful, whereas we allow our beers to develop slowly and naturally, as they should - and that extra time, effort
and love is what makes the beer so great. I love the design, I think its fresh and different, we’re all really proud of what the students managed to do for us. We have only just started up so are working up our client base, but everyone seems very excited by what we have to offer already. We would like to offer publicans the chance to reduce their food miles and buy locally. All our ingredients are grown locally, and we deliver locally, so the environmental impact is so minimal. Also there isn’t really anywhere in Norwich that is offering good quality kegged beer, so it’s a novel alternative to mainstream commercially produced lager. It’s crazy that publicans
put so much effort into buying interesting and constantly changing local ales, and yet seem to ignore all their lager drinkers, and fob them off with the same old rubbish. It doesn’t have to be like that anymore!
Customers can enjoy a product that is brewed in our historic city using local ingredients and it doesn’t get more fresh and exciting than that!

Last year we gained three AA Rosettes and I was named Norfolk ‘Chef of the Year’ Eric Snaith Titchwell Manor I’ve lived at Titchwell Manor since I was eight years old. It is situated on a beautiful stretch of North Norfolk coastline and owned by my parents, who have transformed this Victorian farmhouse into a beautiful hotel. After some culinary adventures working in kitchens in Australia and Asia, I came home to Titchwell, where I am now head chef. Last year we gained three AA Rosettes and I was named Norfolk ‘Chef of the Year’ - accolades I see as a great pat on the back for the whole kitchen team! We are blessed in Norfolk with wonderful local produce which inspires much of our menu and we indulge in a little foraging too for such ingredients as sea purslane and sea buckthorn. Provenance is really important. I believe that diners should be able to ask anything they want about how we source our ingredients - whether it concerns such issues as farm animal welfare, food miles or sustainability. We signed up to the Freedom Food ‘Simply Ask’ campaign for that very reason. We are proud of what we source and how we source it and we are eager to tell our customers. www.titchwellmanor.com PAGE

Beat in 150g unsalted butter and season with salt. Allow to cool to room temperature. For each of the four pies, mould the potato into a sausage shape and place in the middle of a sheet of pastry. Brush pastry with egg yolk and roll into a tight cylinder, roll up the edges with more egg and then chill it in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 190°C/ fan 170°C/Gas 5. Heat a frying pan and add a little oil, seal the lamb on all sides until it is golden brown, on a medium to high heat. Add the garlic, herbs and butter and transfer everything to a roasting tin. Cook for 15-20 minutes. The meat should feel rare. Remove from oven and baste with pan juices, season. Allow it to rest for at least 10 minutes. Take 2 tablespoons of lamb cooking juices and combine with the reduced chicken stock, season with salt and a little lemon juice. With a knife carefully shave the outer florets of cauliflower and finely chop (it should look like couscous). Cook in a little olive oil over a medium heat for 2 minutes. Allow it to cool, and then add nuts, parmesan, garlic, olive oil, lemon zest and season with freshly milled black pepper, salt and lemon juice. Deep fry the cauliflower florets in vegetable oil at 180°C until they are golden brown. Season them and dry them on a paper towel. To serve - deep fry the potato pies until they are golden brown, carefully cut the ends off with a serrated knife and then cut in half to achieve 2 small cylinders. Spoon the pesto on to the plate, add the potato pies, then carve the lamb rack into cutlets and alternate with fried cauliflower. Finish with the lamb cooking juices. PAGE

“A high standard of animal welfare is so important to me simply for humane reasons! Money is tight for everyone right now but this is something I’d never scrimp on! I urge you to look for labels such as Freedom Foods to ensure all animals are treated properly and the farmers that do this are rewarded too. Thank you!”

Jean Christophe Novelli “Food should be enjoyed. Buy the best quality you can afford and of course indulge yourself sometimes. I think it makes people feel even better about their food when the ingredients are ethically sourced - especially meat, fish and poultry from farmers that really care about the welfare of their livestock.”
Summer Style Steaks Preparation Time: 40 minutes Cooking Time: 30 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients For the salad 2x 250g thin Freedom Food beef steaks Sea salt and freshly ground black Fairtrade pepper Dash of Fairtrade olive or rapeseed oil 2 cooked beetroot, peeled and sliced for dressing 6-8 radishes, with edible leaves on 4 sprigs thyme Dash of balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp horseradish, mixed into 1 tbsp. double cream 1 tbsp capers drained for the beetroot dressing 2 raw beetroot 2 cardamom pods, crushed 150 g Fairtrade caster sugar 300 ml water To garnish Sprigs of tarragon and baby watercress
For the salad Take the beef out of the fridge about 30 minutes before you start cooking. Season the steaks with salt and pepper and brush with a little oil. Put them in a very hot dry pan and cook quickly on both sides. Halve or slice the cooked beetroot. Drizzle a little beetroot dressing onto a plate, then add a few drops of balsamic vinegar. Top with the beetroot and slices of radish. Add a few capers and the horseradish cream and then top with the beef. Sprinkle with a few sprigs of tarragon and watercress. Jean Christophe Tips If your steak is a little too thick, use the ball of your hand to flatten the beef. It’s very important to rest the beef before serving. If the beetroot isn’t sweet enough add a little honey. Make the beetroot dressing the day before. Use fresh horseradish grated with honey, ready-made mustard and cream to taste. Add cumin and fennel seeds when cooking the beetroot from raw. Replace the water when cooking the beetroot with fresh orange juice.
Method To make the beetroot dressing Place all the dressing ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil over a high heat. Boil vigorously until the mixture reduces and thickens to the consistency of syrup. Season to taste. Remove the beetroot, set aside and store the dressing until ready to use.

Their primary market is from birth to around 8 years old. Between those ages children go to a lot of parties and need a present to take. Thus their range contains many toys and gifts from £5 to £10 for this purpose. They also have larger special gifts, and a pocket money range including popular collectable titles such as moshi monsters, pokemon and lego minifigures. They have tried to source most products that are generally not licensed, however as those are widely available and are often heavily discounted by online retailers and supermarkets, this destroys any margin for small independents without bulk buying discounts. The products we do offer are great quality at a competitive price, with personal and knowledgeable service.

Stephen Mole A career Civil Servant, I was made redundant in my early 50’s. This rather fortunate turn of events allowed me to pursue my lifelong hobby of photography in a more serious manner. Serious enough, in fact, to lead me to turn professional a couple of years ago. Having been born and bred in Norfolk, I have always been inspired by the wide open skies and wonderful light that makes this part of the world so ‘special’. Brought up on the east coast of Norfolk, in Gorleston, and now living in Ormesby St. Margaret on the edge of the Norfolk Broads. Many of the images I capture, are influenced by the Norfolk Broads and the near 100 miles coastline of Norfolk. Often just dismissed as ‘flat’, Norfolk has amazingly diverse areas ranging from the huge expanses of sand and little creeks of the North Norfolk Coast, to the crumbling cliffs of the east coast and the Norfolk Broads. PAGE

All present wonderful subjects to capture through a lens. On top of that, Norfolk has the wonderful and beautiful city of Norwich. I try to capture images that not only record the beauty of the county, but also portray my own impression of the place. My aim is to give you a glimpse of just how the world looks through my eyes! I feel I’ve succeeded if the person looking at the image finds themselves thinking ‘I wish I was there’ It’s truly a wonderful place to live and work, I just hope that my photos do it the justice it deserves! Many people come here to work or holiday, and often return to live. Norfolk has a magic that only those that have been, will understand. Keys | Fine Art Auctioneers Railway tickets, cigarette cards, rare first editions and a Churchill signature - all part of an eclectic mix of lots which were offered for sale in Keys Auctions Limited two day Book & Ephemera Auction on 30th and 31st May. There was standing room only as the sale progressed quickly through 1600 lots with fierce competition between those in the auction room and those bidding ‘live’ through the internet via The Saleroom.com. A framed and glazed Churchill signature set realised over £800 highlighting once again the popularity of all things connected to the Churchill family, while rare, complete sets of cigarette cards proved popular with buyers and reached prices from £40 up to £120. John Barrow’s A New Geographical Dictionary realised £900 to an online bidder against an estimate of £500-600. This large volume, published in 1759, contained 37 engraved maps and 99 engraved plates with some of the maps detailing America’s west coast simply labelled ‘parts unknown’ - a wonderful insight into the incomplete geographical knowledge available to cartographers when the book was originally printed! A beautifully illustrated edition of The Fruit Grower’s Guide became the subject of a bidding war between prospective purchasers and this eventually sold for £400. A rare set, the works contain over forty coloured lithograph illustrations PAGE

which each carry their own value to collectors. Modern literature and children’s works are always popular and this pattern continued with the sale of a signed, first edition copy of Seamus Heaney’s North for £460 against an estimate of £80100. Keys next booksale is scheduled for 25th and 26th July and some highlights will include an extremely early manuscript cookery book together with The Secrets of Alexis Piemount published in 1562 which details ‘remedies against diseases, woundes and other accidents..’ including advice so that ‘wide beastes shall not hurt you’. In this particular instance, Piemount recommends the following, ‘take the grease of a lion and annoynte your selfe over and over, go where you will and no beast shall hurt you…’ Interesting advice for anyone living in London during the 16th century who was concerned with attacks by ‘wilde beastes’! Also included in the sale will be a rare photograph album which contains early photographs of the famous ‘Pulham Pigs’, the airships once based in Pulham, South Norfolk. The Book & Ephemera Department are only too happy to offer complimentary, no obligation valuations on items such as books, printed matter, autographs, photographs, royal memorabilia, vellum and other documents, maps, prints and items of historical interest. With live, online bidding offering buyers from across the world the
chance to bid at Keys, items are completely accessible to a vast range of prospective purchasers. Past sales have included a Winston Churchill partial upper denture for £15,200, a Third Reich French horn used in Hitler’s own band and a bicycle previously owned by Princess Diana and this diverse range of sales only serves to demonstrate the collectable and desirable nature of items which may be considered worthless or unsaleable by some but prized and much sought after treasures by the right collector.

Mum 2 Mum Support Group It’s a difficult time starting up business in a recession, let alone trying to set up a business with a small child, juggling emails as well as phone calls in between feeds and nappy changes. I found the first year of business quite lonely, however this soon changed when I met Lucy Stone (events in the east) and Jess Wilkins (Jess Wilkins photography). Lucy had the idea of setting up a networking group for mothers in business, like us. People who are keen to succeed, but have lots of barriers to challenge them. We named it, Mum2Mum support group. It’s designed for Mums who are juggling both children and running self-employed businesses. It’s a great group for getting advice on setting up from scratch and bouncing ideas off each other. We have very casual meetings where children and babies are welcome too as we understand it’s not always possible to get a baby sitter. Lucy has recently started doing paid training sessions in the evenings, which have been a great success and very popular. I run the social nights of the group and admin the Facebook page with Lucy and Jess. So my job is to plan the fun nights out! There are many networking groups in Norwich, but this one suits me well as it’s full of ladies who have given me fantastic advice on running my beauty business called Elizabeth Smith Beauty from my home. I have been running my beauty business on Silver Road for nearly three years now and really enjoy the freedom that being self-employed gives me. For more information on treatments I offer or if you would like to find out more about our networking group visit my website: www.elizabethsmithbeauty.co.uk
ICENI - COLUMNISTS Issue 02 2013
My recently published novel, Dead Letter Day, may be set in America, but I am a small town girl living in a Norfolk world. I love my home county and here are four reasons why. Look at our heritage? We have a fab castle and walls. Okay, so they might be falling-down, not-very-much-left-of-them walls, but we still have walls, and yes, other cities such as York might have walls too, but they don’t have broads (well, not of the watery variety) and beaches as well. Yes, check out our beautiful beaches, particularly those running the perimeter of the North Norfolk coast. Oh, and we have a legend too. Black Shuck; remember him? He’s the big dog with the single saucer eye, said to cause death to travellers who cross his path. Want him or not, Norfolk, he’s all ours. Above: Keri Beevis
Secondly, we have an abundance of drinking holes. It used to be that we had a pub in Norwich for every day of the year. That may no longer be the case, but there are still plenty of places for a pint, perfectly suiting my yearning for the occasional alcoholic beverage. The Cornish are famed for having their own language. Well, we have one too. Not only do we say ‘squit’ instead of ‘rubbish’, we are also the people who invented a whole new word for the ladybird; admittedly, calling them bishy barnabees does sound rather silly. Add to this our unpronounceable place names; Wymondham, Costessey and Happisburgh being fine examples, and I say put Norfolkian language on the map. Finally you can’t beat the loyalty of a true Norfolk person. Only today I heard about a lady who had bought my book. A relative asked her what she was reading and, surprised by the genre, asked why she had chosen it. ‘Well, I had to read it,’ the lady told her. ‘She’s a local author.’ With support like that, why would I want to live anywhere else?

SLEEP DEPRIVATION Before children..... It’s Saturday night, a night that is not made for sitting in front of the telly, especially when you are young, free and single. You and a friend are heading to the local pub to enjoy a few drinks and a dance. Your best friend is coming round to get ready with you, women do almost everything in pairs. A night out isn’t complete without a friend partaking in the warm up. It’s been a few days since you have seen each other- so tonight is going to be brilliant, you have a whole three days on which to fill each other in. There is a band playing at your local tonight - lots of dancing is in order and you know that the man you have had your eye on is going to be there. Tonight could be the night he finally makes his move, you have flirted but as yet had no bodily contact. The excitement is bubbling away inside you like floaty, fluttering butterflies. Your friend arrives. It’s time to get ready, you both squeal when you greet each other at the door! Nibbles are set out (you need something to line your tummy, and its cheaper to eat at home) and the wine is flowing. The band starts at 8pm. Of course, it’s cool to be late, so you don’t plan on getting there until 9pm. You try one outfit on - smart black trousers and a nice shirt. “You are not going to the office, come on you want him to want you!” Your friend offers her advice, so you change into something more revealing. Judging by her open mouth and look of horror when you turn around, you took it too far, so on with outfit number three. Perfect. By the time you have tried shoes, applied your makeup and done your hair it’s still only 8.15pm. A few more glasses of wine and chat about how the evening is going to go, half an hour later you set off. The pub is heaving and you spot your ‘crush’ on the other side of the room. Electricity sparks as you catch each others’ eyes. He looks immaculate, gorgeous. He comes towards you – he looks freshly shaved and groomed to within an inch of his life! He leans towards you, raising his voice above the music. “I am glad you came,” he flirts, you can smell the sweet scent of soap, a man who takes this much pride in his appearance is a winner in your mind. You dance, drink and chat. You never open your purse, he’s quite the gentleman. After a few kisses on the dance floor he suggests you move onto somewhere else. You grab a few bottles of wine and sit talking on the grass until the sun rises. The conversation is easy, you share your experiences, eager to know everything about each other. The peace within the darkness warms you both (hooray for summer!) Birdsong brings you down to earth and everything almost into perspective. “It’s time for bed,” you say your goodbyes and make your way home, somehow knowing this is the man you will marry, this is the man to have children with......... 2 children later....... It’s Saturday, there is a local band playing in the pub and you have agreed after a year without a night off, tonight is the night for a few hours of freedom. There are four of you going, there is a definite lack of conversation when it is just the two of you. The table is booked for 8pm the mother-in-law is babysitting. It’s the first time you have left the baby (9 months) and you are anxious. The two year old will be fine, she has been left before and Nanny always opens with a sweetie bribe. You are still breast feeding the baby and keep telling yourself you won’t be out for long. PAGE
34
You have put it off for long enough it’s time to get ready, the children are at the table eating, your husband is lying on the sofa, ignoring your hints about showering and getting ready. You leave him to watch the children and go upstairs. You want to look nice, it’s been so long since you felt attractive. You pick out the dress you haven’t worn for five years, it smells a bit fusty but you can cover that with perfume. The dress used to accentuate all your best points. It’s on! You are so pleased - its really on! You look in the mirror and realise it may be on but it won’t be on for long, you are bursting out of it. The baby bulge is ever present, and where have your breasts gone? You pull it off throwing it to the floor in a tantrum of which your two year old would be proud. You pull out a nice floaty top with a pencil skirt, you feel sexy and comfortable. You glance at the clock it’s 715pm. You are going to be late, what happened? You rush downstairs your makeup and hair done in record time. Luckily your husband has cleaned the kids up and the table is clear, he’s not dressed or showered! However, he has put the children in their pyjamas and made his mother a cup of tea. Before he runs upstairs to get ready he runs his eyes over you, he moves forward and firmly squeezes your right breast making a “beep, beep,” noise. He then adds a “phwoar” and “think i will have some of that tonight”. Your motherin-law’s face turns scarlet, see romance isn’t dead! You pick up the baby for a quick cuddle and feed. Half way through his breast feed he arches his head back and projectile vomits all over your top and skirt. You hand the baby to mother-in-law pushing your face forward, back arched attempting to avoid the stench, off you go to change again. You bump into your husband on the stairs, he’s dressed in the clothes he picked up off the floor, where he left them last night. His beard is coming on nicely. As he passes you the manly sweat smell wafts past, informing you he hasn’t showered. In your bedroom, in front of your wardrobe you give in, shirt and smart trousers it is. It’s time to go, you arrive an hour late and argue in the car about who has to drive home. “You don’t work! I pay for everything, I should get to drink.” Your so-charming husband whines. You give in, you are feeding anyway so you can’t drink, it would just have been nice to be asked. You eat without enthusiasm and listen to the band. At 10.30pm your boobs are like melons, you feel uncomfortable and all you seem to have talked about are your children. A competition about their milestones and achievements. A welcome call - it’s your mother-in-law “The baby won’t stop crying, can you come home, please?” You gather your coat and are out of the pub in seconds. You speed home imagining your baby crying, you imagine him hysterically missing you, his world has ended. You leave your husband to stumble out of the car, the six beers he guzzled are taking effect, he looks like Bambi learning to walk. You scoop up the baby and thank your mother-in- law. With your husband passed out on the sofa, your mother-in-law waved off and the baby fed and asleep in his cot it’s 11.30pm, you head upstairs. Half an hour later the baby begins to cry, he’s concerned you may have left again. You comfort him and head back to bed. An hour later your husband can be heard banging his way to the kitchen, flooding the floor in an attempt to fill his glass with water, expletives being slurred. By the time he brings his hiccuping body into bed you are wide awake, wondering what mess will greet you in the morning. By 3.00am you manage to drift off again, only to be awake again three quarters of an hour later with a restless baby. Downstairs, the baby feeds, cuddles and gurgles on your lap until 5.00am when he sleeps again and you return him to his cot. At least you got to see the sunrise again; albeit in very different circumstances.

NEW BOOK RELEASE CAUSES FRENZY IN WORLD OF LITERATURE. The clue to Norwich author Mark King’s new book is not just in the title; Frenzy (a Daniel Jones story) but in the story itself. A fast pace novel set in the near future for young adults of both sexes, but which can also be enjoyed by adults who are young at heart. For decades books have been published that have blurred the lines between stories that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from George Orwell’s Animal Farm, right up to the present day with the Hunger Game series. Frenzy fits into this category because it is a book that can be enjoyed by a thirteen year old boy or girl plus their parents too. All authors take inspiration from their own life experiences and this no different for Mark who was born in Lowestoft, and started his early working life as an auctioneer on the fish market in the town before moving to Norwich in his early twenties. As the author stated, ‘you can’t help but use features from places and people you have known so you have to jumble up the clues, but occasional they become clear as the story unfolds.’ Mark who is married with two children has had a varied work life from auctioneer to court bailiff, and is presently the author behind the successful worldwide
blog at www.always-hangingaround.blogspot.com. Frenzy is a dystopian novel where the lead character, Daniel Jones, finds out a gruesome secret that leads to his fight for survey in a whiteknuckle ride through a landscape of devastation. The author also said, ‘Life for a most people has its up and downs, a bit like watching your local football team although for me as a Norwich City Supporter it has been nothing but highs for the last four years. And because of this the reader can relate easily not only the lead character’s misfortunes, but also to the two female leads in Mary and Gwendolyn who come to his rescue.’ Daniel leads a peaceful life with his family until he finds out a repulsive secret about the Over-seers, ‘the saviours of humanity’, and his security is blown to smithereens. He enters a world where death is the only certainty and quickly learns to kill-or be killed.
Enter Gwendolyn, with the charm of a snake and a bite that’s twice as deadly. People skills aren’t her thing but she knows how to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. Mary is the only person left alive over forty. Only Mary can remember life before the invasion before humanity was brain washed by the procedures, and she knows where to find their only hope for survival. Pursued by the Over-seers, the Triclops and the barbaric hunters,
can the three brave rebels triumph in their quest?
Frenzy by Mark King is available worldwide in hardback on Amazon/ Kindle and from good book shops on request. ISBN 9781846248771.

Independent review Frenzy by Mark King - The cover of the book is very eye catching and grips your attention straight away. Frenzy is a story about the descendants of a group of people who survived the destruction of the earth. The people lived simple lives and at the age of 40 retire to a place called the achievement centre run by creatures called the over-seers so called saviours of the human race. The story unfolds around a young lad called Daniel who lived with his father mother and sister in a small village. Daniel stumbles onto the truth about what happens to the people once they enter the achievement centre. Daniel goes on the run after he is discovered in the achievement centre he travels to the desolate lands where he meets Mary who remembers the world before the destruction of the planet and Gwendolyn a young friend of Mary`s. I have been hearing that name a lot around Norwich recently. The pop/rock upstarts are getting a nice little buzz about themselves right now, fresh off the success of selling out their EP launch night. I got a copy of their new EP called ‘Nice To Know You’ to see what all the fuss was about.
the record and makes great use of subtle guitar work and percussion. My one criticism is that I wish there was some violin or cello pieces – that would have made this track the stand out one for me.
The band’s social media websites are covered in promotional bits about the new EP which they proudly boast was ‘written, recorded and produced entirely in Norwich’. The ‘indie’ approach to their second release is cost effective but comes with a risk to the quality of the recordings.
‘Hold On’, the fourth track is another pop/rock track that oozes simplicity. This simplicity is not a bad thing as once again it is catchy and upbeat. The guitar break is a great touch too.
However, I am presently surprised when I play through and listen to their opening track ‘Here and Now’. Simple drum beats and sharp fills, choppy synth and some slick guitar runs compliment the track’s sing along chorus and a really impressive production quality. This high production standard is maintained throughout the EP and shows remarkable growth from the band’s first self-titled EP which was released last year. As I start to listen to the second track titled ‘Love Will Win’ I can’t help but fear for a cheesy ballad (as the title may suggest) but I am left tapping my feet and playing air-drums to the 80s pop style offering. Think Crowded House meets Snow Patrol and that gives you a good idea!

The third track, ‘All I See’ is the slowest song on the EP. It sits nicely in middle of
The closing track is the stand out song on the EP. ‘Paper Hearts’ has already been played on BBC Introducing and BBC Norfolk and there are videos online of the singer Chris Walker playing it in Paris. Clearly they know this is the track they want to push and I understand why. Strong vocals throughout, layers of guitars and big bridges into powerful choruses make this tune a hit. It had me singing along for hours after listening and I must confess to playing it again several times. So my fears of the DIY recordings were unfounded. ‘Nice To Know You’ is a well-rounded, pop/rock EP with tight musicianship and a polished production feel that isn’t over the top. I look forward to going and seeing these guys opening for Toploader at Epic on July 12th. The 5 track EP was released Monday 3rd June via iTunes, Amazon and the other digital outlets. Also check out the artwork – I did some digging and it is by NUCA student Shanice Bramwell - just one more Norwich connection! Using a new razor blade shave in the direction of your beards natural growth patterns; Let the razor glide over the skin without excessive pressure. Start at the sideburns and work down each side of the face toward the chin and then on to the neck area. 7. If you are looking to achieve an extra close shave, re-apply Swagger & Jacks Ultimate Shave Oil and keeping the skin warm with plenty of hot water, shave against the direction of growth.

Peugeot 3008 Allure HDi 150 By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk Twitter: @carwriteups I HAVE LOST count of the number of Peugeot 3008 Crossovers I’ve seen on the school run. It seems to be the law to buy one if you have kids. And there’s a reason for that: it’s versatile and roomy, but not too big to be intimidating. Since its launch in November 2009 the French motor manufacturer’s 3008 has been a great success with the car buying public. It has already won two major awards: Crossover of the Year and Car of the Year 2010, and has recorded thousands of sales in the UK. The car has become even stronger in recent times with the introduction of a range of extra standard equipment. The model, on test here, benefits from leather upholstery, Peugeot Connect USB and Bluetooth, a flat folding passenger seat, electric folding mirrors, electro-chrome interior mirror and exterior courtesy lights. And, in this guise, it comes with a frugal and environmentally-friendly engine, providing low CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. Inside, the 3008 offers you and your passengers nearly 50 litres of storage space and three very useful12V power connections. The car also benefits from a user-friendly load space. Access is made easy by the split tailgate of which the lower part can become a seat or be used to PAGE support a weight of 200 kg.
42
The load area floor can easily be compartmentalised thanks to the cleverly designed floor with its three adjustable positions. From behind the wheel the 3008 resembles that of an aircraft’s cockpit, as it is truly designed for the user in mind. The fascia is orderly and elegant allowing a particularly good view of the outside. The spacious cabin ensures comfort for everyone. You and your front seat passenger benefit from a raised seating position whilst there’s stacks of room in the rear for your young children and their essential booster seats. There is also generous leg room behind the front seats for adults. Another very good reason for buying this car is safety especially in wintery conditions. If, like me, the kids’ school run involves tackling potentially muddy, twisty, country roads then Peugeot’s innovative Grip Control is worth considering. Available as standard on the Peugeot 3008 SR Crossover and as an option on the car lent to me, this technology consists of
an intelligent traction control system and special Mud & Snow tyres. It automatically improves the vehicle’s toehold on difficult surfaces such as snow, mud, dirt tracks and wet grass. The system works with the vehicle’s ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) to maintain the best possible traction from both front wheels.
very safe car for anyone with a young family. And that’s priceless in my book.
Grip Control also provides excellent towing and carrying capabilities for outdoor activities in better weather, making it a genuine car for all seasons. And, when the weather changes the system has none of the disadvantages with regards to increased weight and emissions of a standard mechanical 4x4 system.
