East Anglian Air Ambulance founder awarded MBE in Queen’s Birthday honours list The East Anglian Air Ambulance is delighted with the news that our Chairman Mr Andrew Egerton-Smith has been recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours list. Andrew has been a driving force in the development, progress and innovation of the East Anglian Air Ambulance since its formation in 2000. It is his determination to provide an outstanding service to the people of East Anglia that has just, within the last month, resulted in EAAA becoming the first dedicated air ambulance in the country to be approved to attend night time helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) missions, ensuring that the Charity can bring the emergency room to the patient in the hours of darkness as well as in daylight hours. Andrew has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the world of health services, firstly by founding and establishing the Garden House Hospice in Letchworth in 1990, his contribution to Flagship Housing which owns, manages and provides over 21,500 homes to people across East Anglia, PAGE

as Chairman of the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust from 1997 to 2006, and in 2000, with several like-minded colleagues founded the East Anglian Air Ambulance Charity that is known so well today. The iconic yellow helicopters that command the skies across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire to serve people when they most need urgent and expert medical attention, are due almost entirely to Andrew’s vision and dedication. Tim Page Chief Executive of EAAA said: “We are thrilled that Andrew’s tremendous dedication has been recognised in this way. His steely determination and undoubted abilities, energy and enthusiasm for helping people remains as strong as ever. Without his vision and drive local people would not be the first in the country to benefit from our ability to attend people experiencing medical emergencies and accidents at night. Andrew is a remarkable man who has achieved remarkable things; our Charity is extremely lucky to have him.”

Having Nail Extensions? Do Your Research First. I often have customers come to me to rectify issues that other salons have done, the lady photographed right, had been having acrylic nails in Norwich for over a year. When it came to removing and infilling an electric nail file, was used on her natural nail bed causing damage to the matrix of the nail. It was extremely painful and caused permanent damage, which will never recover. She has already been nearly two years without them on. It’s advised when removing non-porous gel or acrylic to leave a very thin layer to naturally grow out. Never let anyone use a electric drill or buff your nail bed to the extreme of causing pain. If electric drills are used correctly and people are trained to use them, they are a very effective and fast way of removing old gel, or acrylic nails. I personally prefer to do it by hand as I feel I have more control. If you do go somewhere that uses an electric nail file and it starts to cause you pain get them to stop immediately. This should not happen if it’s used correctly. This lady was getting married and wanted a very natural look finish, so I decided to use Gellux hard gel to create very natural looking nail extensions for her nails. It took a while to do, but I slowly built up the nail bed with gel filling the hole used by the electric drill. We kept all of her nails very short, so they would be manageable with looking after her young child. I am really pleased with the result and feel it has covered up the damage extremely well. I personally don’t like the stick on white tips, so I use foils under the nail to create a gel sculpture. I do minimal preparation on the nail bed by dehydrating the nail with alcohol first and cuticle work. I rarely buff the nail bed as the bonds on the market now are extremely effective without doing this. On my own nails I use Gellux gel polish, which lasts 15 days no chip or peel on average. This product is excellent as it causes no damage when removed correctly and dries under UV light. I charge slightly less for this manicure as I give people the option of removing it at home. Swagger & Jacks Gentlemen’s Grooming

Swagger & Jacks is a Gentlemen’s Grooming Barbershop situated at 16 Bridewell Alley in the Historic Lanes of Norwich, next to St Andrews Church and the Bridewell Museum, with ample parking at St Andrew Car Park. For more information visit www.menshairnorwich.co.uk or call 01603 611 000.

Beard Grooming

The perfect Beard starts with a commitment to grow beyond the initial stubble stage, to get a fuller more substantial growth before you start shaping and designing your beard. Dependant on the natural texture of the Beard this could take approximately 4 weeks. Shaping a fuller beard growth with clipper attachments will create a very round shape, as the clippers follow the facial shape, thus creating a round profile giving the illusion of “fuller cheeks”. A visit to the Barbershop is essential to get advice on shapes and designs that complement and enhance your facial features. Your barber will use a combination of tools and cutting techniques to optimise the shape, which shall focus on the following key areas

Specialist Beard Products Using translucent shaving oil such as the Swagger & Jacks Ultimate Shaving Oil enables a clean edge to be achieved for the Neck and Cheek Lines areas. Shaving creams or gels will obscure the edge of the beard and make it difficult to see for shaving. Swagger & Jacks Ultimate Shave Oil can be used as a post shave serum and beard oil to moisturise the bristles and prevent itching, and add fragrance. Swagger & Jacks Hair & Body Shampoo IV Men is formulated for use on the beard area to cleanse, hydrate and condition, and will rinse thoroughly without leavening a residue.

Neck Line The Neck line is one of the most important elements of your beard design to get correct. This should be established to a length that is high enough in the natural contour of the neck to enable the beard at the chin to be seen clearly in the profile.

Photography By: Jack Baxter, Fashion Stylist & MUA

Cheek Line The cheek line should follow the natural contours of the face from the sideburn to the corners of the mouth, to emphasise the cheek bone area. Lip Line The lip line should always be cut when the beard is dry to allow for shrinkage, following the contours of the upper lip line. If cut wet the design line will shrink when dry leavening the moustache too high on the lip line

Chest Beating Optional As 5ft Tall Gorilla Troop Descend On Norwich For The Summer

Issue 03 2013

For ten weeks this summer, Norwich’s streets, parks and open spaces are playing host to a 50-strong troop of life-size colourful gorillas to raise funds for charity. Named GoGoGorillas!, the live outdoor art project sees visitors and residents follow a trail of five foot tall painted gorilla sculptures around Norwich from Monday 24th June 2013 by picking up a map or downloading a free interactive App. Binoculars, crawling through rain forests and chest beating optional! The project is delivered by Norfolk charity Break, together with leading arts and education company Wild in Art to raise money for both Break and the Born Free Foundation. Sponsored by regional businesses, each gorilla is designed and painted by professional artists, schools and community groups. The glorious parade of sculptures includes themes including Norwich City Football Club, Superman, Urban jungle and a Freddie-Mercury-inspired ape. A number of celebrities have already lent their support with Break Patron Jake Humphrey a passionate supporter, and Stephen Fry tweeting about the project. Martin Green, fundraising officer at Break says: “The GoGoGorillas trail takes place for ten weeks during the summer of 2013 and will encourage thousands of people to discover and re-discover the fine city of Norwich.” He adds: “The event itself is about raising money for charity, inspiring visitors, highlighting environmental issues and showcasing the plight of one of the world’s most endangered species. The gorillas are a magnificent sight and showcase Norwich as a city of creativity and culture.” Visitors are able to access the trail which started Monday 24th June 2013 and the project will culminate in an auction of the gorilla sculptures in October 2013. The free App named GoGoGorillas allows optional donations to be made through the website. Current sponsors include John Lewis, Anglian Home Improvements, Norwich School, Jungle Public Relations and the Castle Mall. PULSE OXIMETRY SCREENING Issue 03 2013

CHF Pulse Oximetry Campaign CHF is campaigning for the introduction of Pulse Oximetry screening for all newborn babies in the UK. The test which measures the oxygen levels in the blood and evidence shows it is an effective test in detecting three quarters of congenital heart conditions. Kathryn Sparkes, parent of Maximus tells us why its important to raise awareness: The reason we are involved in raising awareness for Pulse Oximetry Screening is because of my son Maximus. He was born with a Congenital Heart Defect which went undetected until he was 15 weeks old and in severe heart failure. With this simple test his condition would have been picked up at birth and his condition would not have gotten so serious. 1 in 133 babies are born with a congenital heart defect. Many go undetected at the 20 week scan and after birth . A study of 20,055 babies showed a successful 75% detection rate with Pulse Oximetry Screening. This simple, cheap and painless test could reduce distress and prevent further physical damage as well as saving lives! This petition calls upon the Government to roll out Pulse Oximetry Screening for all newborn babies in the UK alongside current newborn tests. We test for hearing but not for hearts! For further information please visit www.chfed.org.uk/campaigns/chf-pulse-oximetry-campaign Like and share our page on Facebook to help make others aware www.facebook.com/PulseOximetryScreening Please show your support and sign the e-petition NOW And don’t forget to validate the confirmation email! Independent Bodyguards Direct, Home of Professional Bodyguards We live in uncertain times. Global tension, the increased public availability of information about the wealth and lifestyles of individuals, and technological developments in industrial espionage all make having top quality personal security an absolute necessity. But how do you ensure that the protection you get is exactly what you and your family or employees need? For years, the only option has been to contract with a private security company, and to rely on them to provide you with the right Close Protection Operative (CPO) to keep you secure. But the world of bodyguard hire just had a shake up with the launch of the independent Bodyguards Direct database. The iBD database allows independent CPO’s to register their own profiles, which are then accessible to potential clients the world over. “There will always be a role for private security companies,” said iBD founder, David Dodge. “If your needs are particularly complex, knowing that your protection is being effectively coordinated is very important. But for most tasks, being able to deal direct with your bodyguard has so much to offer: you get to tell him or her exactly what it is that’s concerning you, you build up a relationship of trust, and you can be confident that s/ he is providing you with the appropriate

level of protection. And, of course, you both benefit from agreeing the fee direct - no agency fees for the client, no agency cut for the bodyguard.” Using the iBD database to find a bodyguard gives you far greater control over who protects you and the people who are important to you. As members provide full details of their qualifications and experience, their physical build and the languages they can offer, and of when and where they are available to work, you are able to choose exactly the right person for you, and don’t need to risk being sent someone who simply happened to be available on the day. And the bodyguards on the iBD database all have access to the members only resource centre where a range of top quality equipment and services are available to buy or hire, at significant discounts, enabling them to provide you with an even better level of protection. “So much of the close protection service is down to the relationship between client and operative,” continued David Dodge, “and the database is the first step in getting that right. You can identify our subscribers who look like they will meet your needs, and contact as many, or as few, of them as you wish, with no obligation to take things any further. Getting a bodyguard whom you trust, and who you are confident, will provide the highest level of protection for you and the people who are important to you, is too important to leave to someone else.” For more information visit: www.ibodyguardsdirect.com

NORFOLK BRAWDS Issue 03 2013

Norfolk Brawds August Bout The Norfolk Brawds are the county’s first roller derby team, and were formed in 2010 with a handful of determined novice skaters. They are hosting their second public home bout of the year on August 10th at the UEA Sportspark, a fixture in the Eastern Division of Europe’s largest roller derby tournament, the Heartlands Series. They will go head-to-head with Rebellion Roller Derby (Bedfordshire), as the second game after a bout taking place between the Romsey Town RollerBillies (Cambridge) and Mean Valley Roller Girls (Stamford/Peterborough). The team hosted their first bout of the season in May and it was a great success, building on the crowds who came to their 2012 event to attract an audience of over 500. The same is expected again for the next one. Philthy Delphia, bouts co-ordinator for the team, said the event promised an afternoon of tough tumbling, hard hitting fun, suitable for the whole family. Alongside the skating, there will be vendor stalls and raffle prizes as well as face painting and other activities for children. For the grown-ups there will be a fully-stocked bar, selling the Brawds’ very own local ale, Bonny’s Gold, brewed just for them by Golden Triangle Brewery. “We are urging as many people as possible to come along to the event to find out more about roller derby and to see just how much fun it is,” said Philthy. Modern roller derby is an international, allfemale, full contact, amateur sport. It is played by two teams of fourteen. Five members of each team are on the track at any given point. Game play consists of a series of short matchups (“jams”) in which both teams skate in the same direction around an oval designate with a player (the “jammer”) scoring points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer while hindering the opposing jammer. Games can involve very high point scores of 400+ and leads

can change very frequently, which makes it very exciting and unpredictable. With its American origins, games are often colourful, noisy affairs, with entertaining announcers to explain what is going on, and skaters taking pride in their team identities and their individual personae with skater names often reflecting a more fierce side which comes out on the track. Amongst the Brawds’ skaters are Cruel Runnings, NoTorious, Dinah Mighty and Philthy Delphia. The Brawds have grown rapidly from the small group of founders to over 50 members. Skaters range in age from 18 to 40+, reflecting the broad appeal of the sport. As seen from their name, the league has adopted a nautical theme, with fabulous sailor-style ‘boutfits’ and fantastic team branding to complement this. The boutfits are so appealing, the team have managed to secure a generous uniform sponsorship deal with Zaks restaurants. The saucy sailors are always interested in meeting those keen to have a go at roller derby themselves and are currently recruiting for both the Brawds and their associated men’s league, the East Anglo SmackSons, as well as for referees and Non-Skating Officials. *Norfolk Brawds next bout is on Saturday, August 10, at UEA Sportspark. Doors open at 12pm, with the opening bout at 1.30pm. Tickets are £10 on the door or reduced in advance from www.ueaticketbookings.co.uk or Sinsins, Norwich. Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paints launch in UK bringing rustic charm to pre-loved furniture If you are thinking about transforming an ugly and outdated furniture piece into something beautiful, but are slightly unsure how to go about it, look no further than Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paints.

Having only just arrived from the US, Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paints are now available from www.beautifullyboho.co.uk. These paints offer a fresh, updated colour palette and are clean, bright and saturated with a French provincial influence. Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint is available in 12 colours including Ironstone, a creamy white the colour of Ironstone dishes; Tricycle, a vibrant red; Flow Blue, a shade evocative of blue transferware pottery; Shutter Gray, a Frenchinspired blue grey; and Typewriter; a soft charcoal black.

This ancient, all-natural, powdered paint contains organic ingredients including milk protein (casein), limestone, clay and natural pigments and is guaranteed to create that well-loved look. Unlike latex and oil-based paints, milk paint is completely natural, biodegradable and VOC free with virtually no odour. People have been using milk paint for centuries in furniture refinishing because it’s easy to use, requires little prep work and creates a gorgeous patina of age and wear. Debbie McColl of Beautifully Boho says: ‘Milk paint is an eco-friendly product. People are becoming more concerned about what types of chemicals they’re using in their homes. In home décor, there’s also a strong interest in repurposing and up-cycling furniture with easy to use natural products. What makes them really special, however, is their versatility as when used with the complementary products such as

bonding agent and hemp oil, your creativity can be limitless. But the best bit is little or no sanding or preparation is required before picking up your paintbrush.’ Milk paint is extremely versatile, can be used on a variety of surfaces, providing many different looks depending on the mixing and application. On raw wood, milk paint penetrates like a stain, but it still looks like a paint, drying to a matte finish and will guarantee to never chip or peel. It can also be used on finished wood surfaces, with or without a bonding agent. Paint directly over prefinished or painted surfaces and allow the paint to “self-distress” and chip away randomly for an authentically aged look. “If you’re painting a nonporous surface, the paint will resist in some places, and you get the look of a piece of furniture that was painted a hundred years ago and over time has chipped and flaked in random places” Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paints are available at £21.95 per bag, which makes over a litre of paint, with an approximate coverage of 70 sq. ft. To purchase Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paints or to enquire about becoming a stockist, please visit www.beautifullyboho.co.uk or visit Debbie of Beautifully Boho Ltd in her studio at Designermakers@21, 21 St Nicholas Street, Diss, Norfolk, IP22 4LB.

Candy Crazy! Hello and welcome to Hey Sweet Thing, my own delicious creation which started in 2011 after I failed to find something unique to add to my own wedding day. Candy Buffets may seem like a new craze taking the event industry by storm, but the use of sweets at celebrations is centuries old, where aristocrats would give sugar cubes or sweets made of honey to their guests, as sugar became cheaper these sweets became sugar coated and more like what we know today. We have all heard of almonds as traditional favours symbolising wealth, health, fertility, happiness and longevity but more and more people are moving away from these traditional goodies and onto their childhood favourites, which is where we come in. Hey Sweet Thing offers a TRULY bespoke candy service. What does that mean? It means that you are only limited by your own imagination but if you still aren’t sure let me break it down for you.

Excellent quality: We do not use cheap sweets or cheap glassware. Our candy buffets are far more than sweets in a bowl.

Truly Bespoke: The Only Limit is your imagination. Theme: Vintage, Shabby Chic, Contemporary, Colours, Child friendly or Willy Wonka it’s up to YOU. It is your event we will do it the way YOU want it.

ICENI - FOOD REVIEW

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 03 2013

The Green Dragon Food Review Nestled on Church Street in the heart of Wymondham town, the Green Dragon is a delightful old traditional medieval public house dating back to the 14th century.

Legend has it that a door in the main bar opens to a tunnel

linking the Green Dragon with the 11th Century Abbey. From the exterior The Green Dragon looks a beautiful building and on entering the interior reminded us of a traditional unspoilt Tavern. As first impressions are really important - The Green Dragon certainly did not fail to impress. We were greeted at the bar and promptly given the lunch menu and were made aware of the ‘daily specials’ board on the wall. There was certainly a wide and varied choice of dishes to suit all tastes and appetites. Our drinks order was taken and on commenting how warm it was, and being unsure of what to have I was offered an alternative to the ‘predictable’ diet coke, in the form of a refreshing Fusion, I opted for Apple and Raspberry and I must say this was certainly a good choice! As it was such a warm day we asked to sit outside - although I am sure on a cold winter night the open fireplace in the front room or the wood burner in the bar would be very welcoming. The beer garden buzzed and was comfortably full with seemingly satisfied customers. We took a seat on the large decking area which has a lovely elevated view of the garden. I started with Tempura Halloumi and my daughter chose Tempura Chicken. Both dishes were beautifully presented and the Tempura batter had the fluffy, crisp structure that it should have. Both the Halloumi and chicken inside was moist and delicious. The salad on the side was drizzled in a lovely honey & mustard dressing – the flavours really complimented each other. What a great start to our lunch! For the main course I decided to go with the pork belly served on mash (I asked for not too much mash), also served with seasonal vegetables and a red wine & onion gravy. My daughter went for the Bacon steaks served with chips, peas (although she changed the peas to baked beans) and two free range eggs. On arriving to our table the dishes looked very appetising, the changes to the meal had been noted and executed as requested.

Wow ....slowly cooked belly pork with amazing crackling the crackling on top with its crispy texture and salty flavour set off the meat which was tender, moist with that ‘melt in your mouth’ consistency. The mash was fluffy and vegetables were slightly Al Dente (cooked to that tender crisp stage). The red wine gravy was a perfect accompaniment to the meal infusing a little richness into the dish. The Bacon steaks (yes there were two of them), were moist tender and huge! Served with a large portion of chips and two perfectly cooked eggs with large bright yolks. This dish is certainly not for the smaller appetite. We were offered desserts and the Selection was varied with a choice of Fresh Banana & Caramel Eaton Mess, Tart au citron, Stem Ginger Slice, warm sticky toffee pudding and strawberry jam sponge with a choice of ice-cream, custard or pouring cream accompaniment. However we declined dessert purely on the basis of being too full! In conclusion the standard of food was really good, portions were generous and the service was efficient, welcoming and friendly. Great atmosphere and value for money. I look forward to a return visit and being dog PAGE friendly; my four legged friends could come too.

In the last issue I extolled the virtues of our fine city, and it is true there is much to enjoy in Norwich, as well as the surrounding county.

We are pleased to launch our brand new website www.mum2mumnorfolk.co.uk.

That is if you can actually get here. Above: Keri Beevis

There you will find lots of information on our great support network for self-employed business mums. Are you a self employed business mum in Norfolk? Juggling a business, children & housework? Feel you need some more support from mums in the same position? Join us for networking, support, training and most of all friendship! We run monthly training evenings with industry experts on Social media, SEO, Confidence building and much more. Soon we will be running networking evenings as well. These are all based in Norwich at the Best Western Brook Hotel with a view to expand to other areas if the need is there. We run them in the evening once the kiddies are in bed ( hopefully!). We also run great social nights out where we can all meet and let our hair down. Membership is optional and we will be updating the website soon with more information on the cost and benefits.

Finding your way in or out of Norwich from other parts of the country is a tricky feat, on par with making it from one end of Gentleman’s Walk to the other without having a clipboard thrust in your face, and possibly as much of a challenge as Ipswich face trying to claw their way back into the Premier League. The famous saying is that all roads lead to Rome. Well I am quite certain the ones in Norfolk don’t. They mostly lead to Great Yarmouth and Kings Lynn and lots of pretty little villages, many of which have strange names. How often have you been out driving in the countryside only to find the place you are looking for has suddenly ceased to exist on all of the signposts? I have visited friends before who live in the back end of nowhere, only to find the road I am following loops round and I end up at the pub I drove past ten minutes earlier. Now of course this could have something to do with my terrible navigational skills, but I am holding Norfolk partly responsible. Tractors are a familiar sight on our county roads and these can usually be found in front of you on the single carriageways when you need to be somewhere important, and beware of the beet lorries and their flying produce; following behind them is like playing dodgeball. ‘If you can dodge a beet, you can dodge a ball’. Once you get here you’ll have a great time, but just make sure you allow a couple of days for the ride home. That’s a day and a half for getting out of Norfolk, plus a few extra hours for the rest of your journey.

The Diary of a Norfolk Family.

We have Three Pairs of The Beach Towel Clip to give away:

By Mark King

To be in with a chance of winning a pair of Beach Towel Clips answer this simple question

The car was packed and the children had been picked up from school, although you wouldn’t have known they were there under the mountain of items wedged into every free space that the wife could find to fill in our car. It didn’t matter because it was Friday afternoon and the family were heading on the 45 minute journey from home to our camp site at Kelling Heath. Once we drove into the entrance and through the wooded area to the reception everyone was in the holiday mood. We had stayed at Kelling Heath the previous year on our first ever camping expedition, and now we were back for another long weekend under the canvas. Within ten minutes of our arrival we had booked in, parked on our pitch, and I had started building our new home for the next three days. Now on any holiday break in the U.K you have to factor in the weather especially so when it comes to keeping children entertained, so as the clouds rolled in, and the rain fell, our spirits were still high with the knowledge that there is so much to enjoy on site, come rain or shine. By early evening the sun came out and so did the barbecue. The children had kept themselves entertained exploring the wonderful scenery, abundant wildlife, and with no technology to distract us I was ready to settle down when my daughter came in shouting, ‘daddy, daddy two pigeons are fighting you have got to stop it!’ I followed her to the line of trees and she was correct up to a point. There were two wood pigeons, but they weren’t fighting! One was on top of the other flapping its wings wildly as they mated. I smiled and said to her, ‘sometimes my darling you just have to let nature take its course.’ In years to come when my daughter stumbles into her teenage years, and that dreaded moment arrives when as a parent you are asked to explain about the birds and bees; I will look her in the eyes and say calmly, ‘do you remember that wonderful weekend at Kelling Heath, and those two fighting pigeons? Well I need say no more.’

ICENI - MONTHLY BLOG

Monthly Blog

by Nicole Saxton - Beccles

Where did the time go? Eight years! Eight short years is how long I have been a Mummy (not the toilet roll accessorising variety- a mother). In those eight years I have been blessed with four beautiful children. I have two girls and two boys. Some would say I have seen my fair share of everything child relatedfrom numerous A and E visits, to being poked in the eye consecutively just for a few minutes peace and quiet. However there is still one thing I cannot solve, one thing I am desperate to know the secret to, one thing that has left me completely and utterly stumped! Where does the time go? Before my children were born I heard this phrase from numerous people on different occasions. I would usually smile in agreement and sometimes reply with “yes today has gone quickly” or “time flies when you’re having fun”, but I never fully understood what happened to one of the most logical and understandable things human kind concocted - until I was blessed with my little time wasters. You may be horrified at the term ‘time wasters’ being used on my own children, but be assured I use it with an affectionate tone. I have often (and I am sure I am not alone) got stuck into cleaning the cooker or any other tedious chore. I am up to my elbows in grease and grime from last weeks (and the week before if I am honest) roast dinner. The power spray is foaming and I am scrubbing, realisation of why I had put this job off for so long dawns on me. My one year old is asleep I shouldn’t hear from him for at least an hour, my three year old is in front of the telly Peppa Pig on a loop! I have provided a snack and a drink all within his easy reach, I have also put him on the loo before I started - to minimise the reasons for interruption. I should have 20 minutes to get this job done before he gets bored. The scrubbing is in full swing when he walks in, “Mummy” his voice rises at the end turning the word into a question. I don’t look at him, my head is stuffed in the oven I continue to scrub, I answer him with a high pitched hum. I can hear the Peppa Pig theme tune - a new episode is starting why did they only make each one five minutes long. I hope he will hear it and retake his seat in the sitting room. He doesn’t! “Mummy I want you sit down with me, I want tuddle (cuddle) pleeeeease” don’t look at him I tell myself. I know if I look at him, at that blonde hair and his big brown eyes I will give in, i will stop scrubbing. “Mummy I want a tuddle” he’s crying I come out of the oven guilt riding all over me, and look at his baby face the chubby skin still has a hold on his neck and wrists. These years go so quickly and I had sworn I would enjoy every cuddle before he stopped wanting them. One cuddle won’t make too much difference. After all a cuddle only lasts 5 minutes. I take off my marigolds satisfied that I will be back completing my chores in five short minutes. PAGE

38

“five minutes! one Peppa Pig episode, ok” I am saying this for my own benefit more than his. “Ok mummy” he beams that huge smile and jumps up and down on the spot with excitement. Do I sit for 5 minutes? Do I sit for 1 episode? No he sits so perfectly still holding me so tight that we both fall asleep before Peppa finds the ball in the tall grass. I wake up disorientated and in a panic just before we have to leave to pick up the girls from school the baby is still snoring. Where did the time go? I haven’t checked more than 3 things off today’s to do list. This is one example of how time disappears; another is my biggest struggle - the situation that truly stumps me. We walk to school every day. On my own it takes three minutes, with the children it takes five. We like to arrive at school at 8.35am logic tells you we should leave the house at 8.30, if we put our shoes and coats on at 8.25 it should allow us to leave on time - after all my eight year old and five year old are more than capable of putting their shoes and coats on themselves. We start putting shoes on at 8.25am, we leave the house between 8.40 and 8.45, between fifteen and twenty minutes it takes my children to put their shoes and coats on. The same shoes which are in the cupboard in exactly the same place every single day, however they insist on asking me where they are every morning. Any logical person would look at this and say its a simple case of time management, if you want to be at school at 8.35am and it takes five minutes to walk there and twenty minutes to put our shoes on - we should start putting shoes on at 8.10am. So we do just that. The clock shows 8:10am I begin rallying the troops hollering “shoes on!” What do you imagine happens? You would not be foolish to think that it took the children 40 minutes to put their shoes on, had this happened I would have concluded that this was a conspiracy the children had concocted to send me crazy. Sadly no, this didn’t happen, we were all set and ready at 8.13am. Three minutes!!!! We were at school for 8.21am the gates were locked. I was faced with two choices: walk home and risk being late all over again or stand with the children whining that they were bored for fifteen minutes. So I ask again what cruel joke does time insist on playing with parents and why? You would also not be completely foolish in thinking that when the weekend comes around and my husband is home, surely the task of getting out of the house is much easier. The cruel dictator of time must allow us to half the time of our personal best when there is a dependable, organised male in the house. The answer is no, it gets even more baffling, my husband needs 40 minutes to get himself ready to leave the house, but he can’t share the children’s 40 minutes, he can’t occupy himself while I tend to the little ones. No, that is far too straight forward he demands a whole 40 minutes of his own usually whilst I am sitting in the car honking the horn - waiting. That makes 80 minutes over an hour to get four children and a 30 year old man out of the house. Illogical!

Indepenpress present the enchanting new children’s adventure by Robert Coyle, The Hikey Sprite. TITLE: The Hikey Sprite PRICE: £6.99 ISBN: 978-1780035246 AUTHOR: Robert Coyle PUBLISHER: Indepenpress Publishing Ltd

Book Description Having to leave her beloved Ireland after her mum gets a new job, 10-yearold Hanna wonders how she will ever be able to fit in and start a new life in Norfolk. That is until she meets Sophie, a kindred spirit whose grandmother is full of local tales and folklore - especially those about the mischievous woodland Hikey Sprite. While exploring the nearby Abbey ruins, Hanna soon discovers that the quiet village of Langley is not what it seems. The friends meet a strange creature who enlists their help - help they must give if he and his kind are to survive the cruel and merciless Fomorian Giants. Hanna, Sophie and Gem the dog find themselves thrust into a magical world where the creatures of Norfolk mythology don’t only exist in stories… The Hikey Sprite is a beguiling tale of friendship and adventure, where dangers creep in the shadows and lurk behind every corner. This is the perfect tale for children to get lost in and let their imaginations run wild.

Excerpt Green. Everything is green. As my eyes began to adjust to the light, yellows and oranges swirled into the scene. I blinked in the strong sunlight and stretched my arms and legs, stiff from a long sleep. This place looked familiar, but I couldn’t remember why or how. I couldn’t remember much at all. I was sure I had been here before. I was sure there had been a before, but it was all blurry. Flashes of battles zipped across my memory but vanished into the fog. The colours had arranged themselves into trees. Through the branches of the tree in which I sat, I could see across brown fields. There was a lone house standing out against the sky. It didn’t look familiar. Behind the house, I could just make out some stone walls. They looked like ruins of a building. I could make out archways, a church perhaps? A violent shudder passed through me as I looked at the ruins. Something bad had happened there. Flashes of battles swirled around in my head again. I saw a large black dog skulking among the ruins, long before they were ruins. The memories were dark, foggy and fractured and I let them fade away.

Independent review The Hikey Sprite by Robert Coyle This is a story about good and evil. The Hikey Sprite or fey as they are also known represents the good and the Shuck is made up of pure evil and causes havoc and destruction. The Hikey Sprite and Shuck, features widely in Norfolk folk lore. The Shuck is also helped by Fomorian Giants who are from Celtic Mythology. The story unfolds around a young girl called Hanna who moves with her parents from Ireland to Norfolk, where she meets Sophie at school and the two of them become best friends. Whilst exploring the woods near Hanna`s home they meet Kalan the Hikey Sprite who tells them of the Shuck and the giants called Balor and Tethra. Hanna, Sophie, Kalan and a few Forrest friends come up with a plan to defeat the Shuck and Giants. This story is very enjoyable, a thoroughly recommended read for children of all ages. “We have been going to gigs in Norwich since the age of 14 and getting involved in live music was something we have always aspired too. In April 2013 we sat down and discussed the idea of hosting and promoting gigs of our own, after many late and sleepless nights ‘One for the Road Events’ was created.” We want to use One for the Road to showcase the wide range of local Indie and Alternative music acts Norwich and East Anglia have to offer, with the view to stretch out to further reaches of the UK if successful. Our first gig is on Thursday 25th July at the Norwich Arts Centre. With a capacity of 290 and located in the old St Swithin’s church it has just been named East Anglia’s best small venue by NME magazine. We have Hello Bear, Deers and Cineclub playing our first event all of which originate from the fine city of Norwich.” Tickets are on sale now from either the UEA or Norwich Arts Centre box office, see advert on the left for more information. SEAT Alhambra SE 2.0 TDI CR Ecomotive 140 PS By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk Twitter: @carwriteups PEOPLE CARRIERS just aren’t sexy. That’s a fact. But SEAT’s Alhambra is a perennially popular one - for a very good reason. As an authentic Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), the almighty Alhambra’s adaptability fits just as well to family necessities as it does to the needs of the milemunching business driver. The sizable SEAT’s sporting spirit and driving enjoyment certainly go hand-in-hand with common sense and originality. And thanks to its unexpectedly lively handling and hi-tech equipment, you can look forward to every mile behind the wheel. With a combined fuel consumption figure of around 50 mpg, the Alhambra SE 2.0 TDI CR Ecomotive 140 PS won’t rob you at the pumps either. The present incarnation of the motor, launched in late 2010, is longer than its forerunner - and wider. There’s plenty of breathing space for adults to sit happily, even in the third row of fold-away seats, whilst the big sliding doors allow fantastically easy access. PAGE

42

The load area is charitable, too. When configured as a

five-seater the Alhambra has 885 litres of luggage space available, which swells to a vast maximum of 2,297 litres if only the front two seats are in use. In other words, this car could help clear out a large swathe of a white goods department! Aesthetically, the MPV has an undeniably broad, powerful presence, but its slightly overstuffed looks won’t be to everyone’s taste. Beneath its so-so skin, the Alhambra’s TDI engine, on test here, generates 138bhp. It produces good, low down pulling power for such a large vehicle, and efficiency measures such as a Start-Stop system and brake energy recovery technology come as standard. The stock safety equipment is, like much of the Alhambra, impressive. It involves seven airbags, including a driver-side knee airbag, and electric child locks on the rear doors. Also standard is electronic braking assist, tyre pressure monitoring, and stability aids. Indeed, the award-winning SEAT Alhambra is an MPV with some truly decent features. So it’s no shocker it was not only named Best MPV by Diesel Car, but voted Best MPV in WhatCar?

PROS ‘N’ CONS
