It’s October and any discerning gentleman is starting to think about Movember and which kind of moustache he will be growing this year? A handlebar, a chevron or perhaps (although you may need slightly longer for this) a Fu Manchu. For those who don’t want to grow your Mo, you can MOVE instead, so rather than 30 days of tashe growth and grooming you can do 30 days of daily exercise, either way you will be bound to feel toastie and warm. Which leads us onto another well-deserved cause the ‘sleep out’, promoted by The Benjamin Foundation. The Sleep Out will be as close to sleeping rough as most of us, thankfully, will get. Raising the profile of the young in Norwich sleeping rough, the night will consist of a small taster into homeless life living on the streets, which will be taking place on 12th November. This month we have a few featured interviews one of which is with Josh Cousens from abbotFox, who is their social media manager, an interesting read and equally brilliant company. We hope you enjoy Issue 30.

I went to a number of Newmarket Nights this year but there was a particular one which I looked forward to and that was McBusted. It was like a day of remembering my childhood/teenage years. It was fun, loud & joyful!! My favourite part of the gig was when they sang the song from the 'Thunderbird Movie', it was so amazing to hear it live and I must admit to jumping around and screaming quite a bit. McBusted sang both McFly and Busted hits all afternoon which was awesome. I was genuinely sad when it the gig ended and I do hope they come back soon so I can come and party again!! Thank you McBusted and thank you Newmarket for another brilliant year of acts and racing.

Issue 30 2015

Should Local UK Councils Have Extra Powers For Empty Dwellings Earlier this month, Barcelona City Council fined a number of banks for having empty homes, but should councils be given additional powers to do this in the UK? The banks fined in Barcelona had twelve empty properties on their books, which had been empty for more than two years. They were fined more than ₏60,000 by Ada Colau, the city’s mayor, and a further 62 properties are being investigated. Currently, councils do not have powers to be able to do this, but have limited powers to regulate certain kinds of behaviour, such as anti-social behaviour, with criminal sanctions. In order for councils to fine property owners here they would need a form of devolved power to make specific laws. It is unlikely that this would happen as it would give powers to councils that they have not previously had and it is not clear that the problem that exists in Spain, necessarily exists here. The banks in Barcelona, and Spain generally, have been repossessing properties and not selling them on due to the depressed property market there. The mayor has taken this action to pressure the banks into taking action. The empty dwelling problem in the UK is not the same, as the housing market is relatively healthy at the moment and there is no incentive to delay sales; the causes are more complex and varied. In order to impose criminal sanctions, similar to those adopted in Barcelona, the law would need to be changed. However, some local authorities are already giving financial penalties to deal with empty dwellings in the form of an increase in council tax (typically up to 150% of normal council tax) to encourage owners of houses that have been empty for 2 years or more to bring them back on to the market. There are a number of other powers councils may use to combat this, such as Empty Dwelling Orders (not popular), Enforced Sale Procedure (if the owner is in breach of financial obligation to the council) and Compulsory Purchase (quite difficult procedurally and can be expensive). But, are these methods effective in bringing empty housing stock back into occupation? The two most popularly used methods, Compulsory Purchase and Enforced Sale Produce, are not specifically designed to deal with this problem. Empty Dwelling Management Orders, which was intended to reduce the problem, is used much less often, which suggests that it needs to supplemented or replaced. It seems that if councils are to have greater success in reducing empty properties within their area that more specific and tailored powers need to be granted to them. Would a fining system, such as that used in Barcelona, be effective here? It is doubtful that it would be effective, as professional landlords are less likely to leave properties empty and those that are left empty are left so, not for financial reasons, but more as a result of the individual property owner’s personal circumstances. MOVE OR MO

MOVE OR MO. SAVE A BRO. JOIN THE MOVEMENT THIS MOVEMBER

Movember, the month formerly known as ‘November’, launches its 2015 campaign to Mo Bros and Mo Sistas across the nation, encouraging men and women to sign up and grow a mo or commit to MOVE to raise awareness and funds for men’s health. As Mo Bros unite and clean shave on the 1st of the month, they become walking, talking billboards helping to generate awareness and raise vital funds as they wear Movember’s hairy ribbon, the moustache for 30 days. When it comes to their health, too many men don’t talk, don’t take action and die too young. The Movember Foundation wants to help men live happier, healthier, longer lives and invests in four key areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. Even though the Movember Foundation will always be all about the moustache, there is now more than one way to champion men’s health this month. MOVE is a new initiative encouraging Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to get physically active and make a commitment to improve their health while raising funds. The challenge is to MOVE every day of Movember - 30 MOVEs in 30 days. How you MOVE each day is up to you. Whether it’s a workout one day, walking 30 minutes to work the next, a game of ping pong or an epic bike ride, no MOVE is too big or small. The good news is that moving on a regular basis can reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer by up to 50% and lower your risk of early death by up to 30%. It’s also one of the best ways to stay mentally healthy and one of the best treatments for mild to moderate depression. “This Movember, we want Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to think about mind, body and mo by challenging each other to grow or MOVE for 30 days.” says Sarah Coghlan, UK country director for Movember. “Being active is one of the best things you can do for your health, so the addition of MOVE makes it even easier to do something fun that’s good for you and men’s health. Just sign up at Movember.com.” The Movember Foundation spans the globe across 21 countries. Since inception, a global army of over 5 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas have grown, or supported the growth of a moustache. To date more than £400 million has been raised globally and over 1000 men’s health projects have been funded.

Men and women sign up at Movember.com to grow, give or MOVE for the 30 days of Movember. We have re-signed upto Movember again this year and have rejoined Team Morwich that is headed up by David Hubbard (Landlord of The Surrey Tavern, Norwich). If you're thinking about getting on the Move or growing a Mo to save a Bro why not join the Morwich crew: moteam.co/morwich Twitter: @icenimagazine

Issue 30 2015

The Benjamin Foundation 'Sleep Out' - Thursday 12th November 2015 The event starts on Thursday 12th November with registration from 7pm to 8pm. It ends at 7am the following morning. How Are Funds Raised? The up front registration fee is £25 per person. In addition we ask all participants to commit to raising a minimum of a further £100 in sponsorship from friends, family and colleagues. What Happens At The Event? •

Check in is from 7pm to 8pm when we will show you a short video about our support for young people in Norfolk who would otherwise be homeless

This is an outdoor event and we will be sleeping in the car park which has a tarmac surface

We are holding our first large scale Sleep Out in November to highlight the issue of homelessness and raise money to support our work with homeless young people in Norfolk.

There is no roof overhead but we will have access to the office if the weather is extreme

We will provide some hot food free of charge during the evening

This event will never replicate the hardship faced by those who are homeless. However, we want the event to bring to life the challenges of sleeping outside.

Hot drinks will be available to make yourself throughout the night

We will provide some hot breakfast free of charge from 6am to 7am when the event ends.

If you want to take yourself out of your comfort zone whilst supporting a Norfolk charity this is the event for you!

Why A Sleep Out? We have recently become a partner charity of Centrepoint, one of the country's leading charities supporting homeless young people between the ages of 16 and 25. Homelessness is one of the key areas of our work and at any one time we are providing a home and support to over 100 young people in this age group in Norfolk. Each year Centrepoint runs a national Sleep Out event with local charities across the country all taking part and this year for the first time we are will be involved. All the money raised from our Norwich Sleep Out will stay with us to help our work in Norfolk. It is expected that around 2,000 people nationally will take part this year across thirteen venues. For more details on the events around the country click here www.sleep-out.org.uk

There is access to the office to use indoor toilets throughout the event. Car parking is not available for vehicles - we'll be sleeping in the car park! What You Should Bring • A sleeping bag • Layers of warm and waterproof clothing including a hat and gloves • Cardboard to put down under your sleeping bag - it helps keep out the cold and is softer than tarmac

TIME, ONE THING YOU...

Time, One Thing You Can't Afford To Waste By Susan Leigh So many people say they have no time, that there are not enough hours in the day and yet often, when they're really busy, are amazed, incredulous at how much they actually manage to achieve.

know that they're a top priority. After all, your quality customer service may have been a significant part of their reason for choosing to come to you in the first place. But even important clients have to appreciate that they're not the only call on your time. They have to treat you with respect and be reasonable in their requests.

The saying, 'if you want something doing ask a busy person' rings especially true. A busy person doesn't waste time procrastinating, mulling over where to start. They simply begin and do it.

Prioritizing helps you to list the immediate, most pressing demands on your time. Order them in the most efficient way. Some tasks may be complex and require a lot of time, others may need to be undertaken in stages with input intermittently required from other service providers. These are important considerations to factor in. Make a comprehensive list in order to assess and prioritize the best way to proceed. Then, when any new demands are made upon you, you can modify your list and make sensible, realistic decisions. Using a list helps you organise your thoughts and prioritize your time more effectively.

Susan Leigh

With that in mind, let's look at ways to avoid wasting time: Â&#x; Prioritize. It can become a habit to instantly react to other people's emergencies and demands and, on occasion, that might be appropriate. It's reasonable to treat an important client with respect, to let them

Be constructive. People typically fill their time with what needs to be done, so a simple task may take thirty minutes or half a day, depending on how much time there is available. Focus on the task in hand and commit to maximising your input. Then reward yourself with a short break.

Notice how much time you fritter and waste. A 5 minute coffee break can take more than double that if you calculate the time spent walking to the kitchen, chatting, waiting for the kettle to boil. Watching the news can absorb another 30 minutes if you become distracted by reports on topical items. Calling at the local shop several times a day can further add to the amount of time wasted.

It's important to have breaks. They help manage stress, provide a helpful interlude to reflect on problems and issues, give an opportunity to consider a different perspective and become calmer. Make the most of your breaks by including healthy food, water, fresh air, exercise. Use your time constructively.

better suited to their skills.

Commit your full attention to each task in turn and avoid being distracted. Some people switch their phone to silent, only check their emails and post at specific times so that they're able to concentrate fully. Then you're less likely to make mistakes, repeat work you've already done or lose track of where you're up to. Delegate. Some tasks may be able to be done satisfactorily by another person. Taking on a junior may initially mean having to spend time training or clarifying processes and procedures but that may be good practice in the long-term. And a fresh pair of eyes may make valuable suggestions. Sharing work or forming alliances with other associated businesses may ease your workload by passing on tasks that are better suited to their skills. If they share some of their leads and contacts you could find that you're able to offer an improved service to your combined clients.

Pay attention to admin. If you part-finish a piece of work make clear notes as to where you're up to, any actions that have been taken. It saves time when you eventually return to it. A clear, visible summary saves time, effort and potential embarrassment at looking inefficient. Implement systems that help you manage work efficiently. De-clutter regularly and archive old, outdated data away from more relevant operational paperwork. Time management also means allowing time for fun, relaxation, family and friends. Make time for your special people and nurture those relationships. Let them be a significant part of your life and support network. They are often an important part of the reason why you work so hard. Equally, allocate valuable time for yourself, just as you would a respected, valued client. Be sure to stop and give yourself credit when you've completed an important task or project. Enjoy each achievement rather than simply moving from one task to the next. It's important to value how you spend your time. SHARE THE MAGIC

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 30 2015

Share The Magic Of Christmas With An NSPCC Letter From Santa Christmas is a time filled with family traditions - anything from putting carrots out for Rudolph to leaving ‘snowy footprints’ around the house - to preserve children’s belief in Santa Claus. However, even the most creative parents can be caught out! To help share the magic of Christmas with children here in the UK and around the world, the NSPCC has once again teamed up with Santa to send personalised letters all the way from Lapland in return for a suggested donation of £5. And this year, Santa has been hard at work, finding new ways to make each letter even more special. A brand new, colourful illustration style and characters and stories tailored to specific age groups are complemented by more personalisation in the letters, further enhancing the magic of receiving a letter from the man himself. Parents can choose whether the letter is signed by Santa or Father Christmas, and each letter now comes complete with an age appropriate game for children to play. For the first time, those requesting a Letter from Santa will be able to write a personal P.S. message, and will receive a complimentary pack including games, recipes and activities to help make the experience even more enchanting. Santa has even written a special poem to celebrate Baby’s First Christmas - a keepsake to treasure for years to come. Yasmin from Glasgow requested a Letter from Santa in 2014 and said: “My seven year old thought it was fantastic. He couldn't get over the fact that Santa knew so much about him, and kept saying ‘How does he know this? Look, he knows I sing!'" By making a donation to the NSPCC, parents will be able to share the magic of Christmas with their loved ones, whilst helping the charity keep more children safe.

ICENI - COLUMNISTS

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 30 2015

The Diary of a Norfolk Family.

As a thriller writer it is my job to try and keep readers on the edge of their seat by building scenes of fear and tension through my novels. To try and do this well, I take a keen interest in what scares people. Most of us share the same Above: Keri Beevis basic fears - death, illness, loss of loved ones, darkness… but we also have more personal phobias scaring us, from things that can actually hurt us, such as wasps, knives or thunderstorms to more innocuous things like clowns or creepy looking dolls. My biggest fear is heights and even standing on a chair makes my legs go wobbly. I have tried to do high stuff before - castle battlements, top of windmills, ladders, etc, but halfway up I start having palpitations and feeling all faint and sick and then start to panic that a gust of wind is going to blow me off whatever I am standing on, which is hilarious as I have two great sandbags attached to my chest and it would take a bloody hurricane to blow me off anything. Fear of heights is a fairly rational one, but other fears I have are just plain stupid. Like being hit by a plane. Yup, not too keen on being in them either, but my real fear is actually having one crash into me. Cars, motorbikes, trains and buses I am fine with, but whenever I hear that low roar of an engine flying overhead, I practically poop my pants and say my last goodbyes. Having a wasp fly up my nose and accidentally sniffing. Because that could happen, right? Getting trapped in my house - either by a freak snow storm or a nuclear disaster, or hell, maybe by the zombie apocalypse, and not having a completely full wine rack and fridge. This would explain why I always overbuy in the supermarket. If I run low on a product I start hyperventilating. Having a rat crawl up the toilet bowl when I am sitting on the loo. Now this one might sound a lot crazy, people, but you Google it - IT HAS HAPPENED. The thought of suddenly feeling the twitch of whiskers against my bum cheeks scares the bejesus out of me. Since the publication of Dead Letter Day and Dead Write, I have been dreaming that one day someone will snap up the movie rights - because biased as I may be, I honestly think they would make great films. So add to my list of fears. Casting. What if terrible actors were brought in to play Rebecca Angell and Vic Boaz? The thought is enough to make me break out into a cold sweat. By Mark King As the nights draw in, and the clocks go back, the first chills of winter come galloping from the north. The summer holidays are but a fading memory as we hunker down for winter. On the fridge door is a magnet of a crab that was purchased in Cromer, and is a permanent reminder of this years’ family camping holiday at Forest Park just outside the town. Above: Mark King

This year we decided to stay in the U.K and enjoy a traditional seaside holiday, and there aren’t many better places for such a holiday than in North Norfolk. Nights under the stars on an award winning camp site why the children are joyfully playing with their new friends in the fading light is an experience that should be enjoyed more often. Cromer has all the traditional charm and then some. We spent days on the beach with chips and icecream and of course the famous dressed Cromer crab landed daily on the beach in little wooden boats. Then there is Cromer Pier with Europe’s last end of the pier variety show, and what a wonderful show it is. It’s worth every penny with something for every member of the family to enjoy. Then to cap it all off you can’t beat crabbing off the pier. We all had a wonderful time and my holiday spirits increased even more when on our return home I found out that my new book, Daniel Jones Doom, the squeal to Frenzy a Daniel Jones Story had won the People’s Book Awards. So during the cold drab winter months when the spirit flags under the weight of the constant stream of grey clouds we can sit at the kitchen table, and there on the fridge door is a memento of sunny days, and very happy times. www.always-hanging-around.blogspot.com Follow on twitter: @author-king

TAKEAWAY ART

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 30 2015

New Subscription Service Delivers Norfolk-Produced Art To Your Door Every Month In an age where everything, from books to food, can be delivered to your door at the click of a mouse or the tap of a touch screen, a Norwich-based graphic designer has devised an exciting new way for art lovers to find creators they love. Subscribers to Takeaway Art will be introduced to a new artist every month, have a chance to get to know them and their work, and then at the end of the month receive an original artwork to keep. Takeaway Art is offering this for a simple subscription of £28.50 a month under the “Starter” package, or £25 a month for customers who want to subscribe for three months at a time. “Norwich has a fantastic arts community with oodles of undiscovered talent,” said founder Alina Sandu. “I think this will be a great way to find those artists a wider audience.” Every month Takeaway Art will focus on one Norfolk-based artist, finding out how they work and what inspires them and keeping subscribers up to date on their progress through social media. Then, on the 20th of the month they will take payment for the month’s delivery. A couple of days later the artwork will be wrapped in takeaway boxes and shipped out to customers, before the whole operation starts all over again. If subscribers decide they would rather take a pass on the work of one artist (art is naturally subjective) it’s only a couple of clicks to opt out before that month's payment. Subscribers who have received nine or more boxes will also have the option of joining the Art Swap, allowing them to once a year send back a piece of art they no longer want in exchange for a new one. It’s early days for the project, with the first boxes due to go out at the end of October, but Alina already has some great artists lined up for the first few months. These include screen printer, illustrator and designer Jo Stafford, stencil artist Ruth Knapp, whose work is strongly influenced by Pop Art, urban culture, 90’s cartoons and kitsch ornaments, and natural history-inspired illustrator Charli Vince. “Despite being approached by other individuals with a relatively similar idea to Charli Vince this, this is the only one I've actually wanted to get involved with!” Charli said of the project. “Takeaway Art seems to really have the artist in mind as well as the customers which - as I'm sure many artists will sympathise - is a pleasant change! And after having a lush cup of tea with Alina of Takeaway Art, I was most definitely on board. Can't wait to see where it all goes in the future.” The first boxes are due to go out at the end of October. CHARITY HAIR SHAVE Issue 30 2015

Claire's Charity Hair Shave

Friday 11th September 2015, saw the culmination of much planning and fundraising for the charity evening at McQueens Barbers & 'Illusions' Beauty in aid of Cancer Research UK. Claire Carter took the very noble step of having her hair shaved off for charity, not just with clippers but with a traditional cut throat razor. She was, however, in extremely safe hands with McQueens' barber Francis Bayliss as this is one of the traditional skills used at McQueens. There was a great turnout for the event with lots of support from people on the night and there were many donations of prizes from local businesses. This has helped to raise even more money for Claire's chosen charity. Proceedings got underway with the Mayor of Wymondham, Mr Joe Mooney and the NCFC Captain, Russell Martin each cutting off a lock of Claire's hair simultaneously. There was a lot of emotion on display as so many people have been touched in someway by this disease. Claire insisted that she was not being brave at all and stated "it's only hair and it grows back, other people don't have that choice". The grand total is not yet known but early indications are that the initial target of ÂŁ1,000 has been doubled which is a truly amazing achievement. Photographs of the event can be seen on both McQueens Barbers and 'Illusions' FaceBook pages and websites. http://mcqueensbarbers.co.uk | https://www.facebook.com/Mcqueensbarbers http://www.beautifulillusions.co.uk https://www.facebook.com/illusions-Beauty-Nail-and-Spray-Tanning-Spa-230171060923

Annie The Musical

At Theatre Royal Norwich Reviewed By April Clayton

With the one and only Craig Revel-Horwood playing diva Miss Hanigan, it’s hard to not take your eyes off him. Looking every bit the part, he takes the character into drag territory and does it marvellously well. Craig Revel-Horwood’s musical theatre background shines through his performance and delivers a disturbingly convincing Miss Hanigan.

Films can often set a high bar, so when an alternative is offered, we all cant help but think ‘please don't let it ruin the film’. But not to worry, Nikolai Foster, Director of the popular musical ‘Annie’ which took place at the Theatre Royal in Norwich has done everything but ruin the story that we all know and love. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the story; Annie is a young fiery red head girl with nothing in the world but a large amount of hope that one day her parents will come back for her. This hope and optimism is the only thing keeping her and the other orphans going while they are made to clean and sew by Miss Hanigan who is in charge of the orphanage. Though it’s not long before billionaire Warbucks is on the look out for an orphan to share christmas with him. Welcome Annie. The 12 ‘orphans’ and in particular Isabella Papella who played the role of Annie did an amazing job on stage. Singing and dancing their hearts out; they truly gave it their all. 12 year old Isabella stood out for her chemistry with villain Miss Hannigan played by none other than Strictly’s very own Craig Revel-Horwood which shone throughout the play as their humour, wit and banter bounced off one another. Not forgetting the heartfelt relationship of Isabella and Alex Bourne, her adoptive ‘Daddy’, Mr Warbucks that the audience poured over. Foster’s direction makes the most of it, drawing out the heartbreak and sadness in the piece alongside the irresistible flicker of hope. The musical began in the bedroom of the orphans who were rearing to go as they couldn't keep help but wriggle under the duvet covers they were hiding beneath. Soon after the young girls were throwing themselves into the touching song ‘maybe’ as the song inspires hope and Isabella as Annie fills everyone with optimism. Twitter: @icenimagazine

The fact that Revel-Horwoods has a background of fancy footwork, it is appropriate that the Strictly come dancing judge dances up a storm with his accomplice’s Jonny Fines and Djalenga Scott. The trio plot away throughout the show and pull out all the stops with a rendition of Easy Street which captures the essence of the show and really sets the scene of the 1930’s. The best song of the show has to be Tomorrow performed by Isabella. Keeping with tradition the song is played as we all know it but modernised slightly as Annie belts out the song partly with the American President. Mr Warbucks is watching lovingly on, filling everyone with hope and passion as this little girl injects life into the characters; changing their view of life. With other favourites such as ‘Hard knock life’ and ‘I think I'm gonna like it here’ you can guarantee you will be humming and singing along and expect a great show. Annie the Musical has now finished at the Theatre Royal Norwich but if you sadly missed it, the show is performing all over the country well into next year so there is plenty of time to see the brilliant performance. Foster has turned the traditional 1977 musical’s staging to create a stylised and current theme running throughout. The play had a lot of great stage setting and fancy footwork to keep the audience entertained. Foster’s inspired direction has moved the piece away from its traditional staging, working with designer Colin Richmond to create a stylized world that pays more than a passing nod to the tales’ original comic strip origin. Jigsaw pieces, mirrored in Ben Cracknell’s lighting plot, frame the stage to highlight Annie’s fractured history but also give the piece a vibrancy and sense of place. They also allow for swift scene transitions, keeping the pace high.

Iceni talks social media to...

Josh Cousens, Social Media Manager at abbotFox (Norwich) What does your role within abbotFox as Social Media Manager involve? I am

responsible for overseeing all of our social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Google +,) in addition to writing regular blogs about the property market and specific, Josh Cousens unique homes, meet the team profiles, local restaurant reviews, email marketing, newsletters and other general marketing duties.

Can you give us a brief run down on how you use social media to interact with potential home buyers? We use our social media channels to

engage and inform our target audience about what is happening in the market, utilising informative articles from external sites. Working Monday-Friday allows me to immediately respond to any queries or qualms that clients may have. We are also able to readily deploy seasonal deals or offers that we may have, to a mass audience.

How do you use social media as a tool for your existing clients? If a client is looking to sell their

property through us, we can use the likes of Facebook and Twitter as another avenue to advertise their home for a potential buyer. Using our social media channels allows possible purchasers to look at the large following we have and the glowing reviews which are easily accessible.

Which social media platforms do you use and and why? i.e Hootsuite, TweetDeck, etc? I use the

Hootsuite dashboard to manage our multiple channels, mainly because of its simplicity to use. The ability to be able to successfully oversee our numerous channels from one location makes my job a lot easier.

What is your favourite social media campaign you have managed? We introduced a campaign in

which our Mini’s were re-designed by local schools to incorporate our new brand colours. The competition was to find the best design from the pupils, and the winning creation would be used on all three of our Mini’s. The designs were posted on our social media channels, and the public were able to cast their opinions and vote which was their favourite design.

What kinds of skills/qualities do you think you need to possess to be a Social Media Manager?

I think you have to have an attentive and observant character, knowing what is trending and what your demographic are interested in engaging with, and the knowhow of when to change things when it is not going to plan. Being creative and possessing the ability to improvise are also key qualities.

What are your competitors doing on social media?

We believe in the ethos of doing things deliberately different and pride ourselves on our dynamic and innovative approach to business. With regards to the Norwich area, the emphasis that we put on social media has led to us creating a lot more content and having a far greater following than any of our competitors. Zoopla recently noted us at number 3 on their list of the most influential UK estate agents on social media.

And finally, what one piece of advice can you give to someone starting out into the world of social media? Developing a successful social media presence

will not happen overnight, as the old saying goes ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day,’ and it can take a while to build up a rapport with your target audience. Perseverance, devotion and a constructively thought-out plan are key to fruitfully driving your social media existence forward.

What On Earth Are Periscope And Meerkat?

Unless you've been living on a remote desert island over the last few months you can't have failed to see or hear about the explosion of live streaming usage attributed mainly to two rival streaming apps - Meerkat and Twitter native app, Periscope. Both enabled any user to broadcast live video captured on their smartphone to their fellow streaming app users while also promoting the stream via Twitter. Although first to the market, Meerkat suffered a potentially devastating blow just weeks after launch - Twitter launched Periscope and blocked Meerkat from the Twitter social graph, making it's Twitter integration less than ideal. Meerkat has struck back recently though and formed an alliance with Facebook - there's still some way to go before full integration but it's a promising and interesting collaboration. In the end your final preference of app really depends on your live streaming goals, your audience and your personal preference. So what's the difference between the two rival apps? Here’s a quick rundown of the most well known differences:

Periscope • • • • • •

Cleaner more professional design Integrates seamlessly with Twitter 24 hours (after the event) replay access Access to analytical data ie. No. of viewers, time watched, duration, retention etc and Twitter follower info Instant streaming Commenting, Following & 'like' options

Meerkat • • • • • • • •

Schedule broadcasts for a later date More cluttered interface 30 second delay on 'instant messaging' Commenting, Following and 'like' options No replay or save ability after broadcast More limited Twitter integration Developing Facebook integration 'Cameo' follower takeover feature

Should my business be using these? If you've a product, event or cause then these platforms are worth considering. If you've a big product launch you could stream it to your followers, maybe you want to be the next Jamie Oliver and stream cookery lessons or you're an artist and want to give live insight into your art and techniques or even offer gardening tips to your followers - the possibilities are endless - it could even be used to broadcast breaking news! Let's be clear though, the quality is based on the smartphone you're using so don't expect HD broadcast quality. In addition you can only film in portrait orientation, you'll potentially suffer shakes and wobbles and let's hope your WiFi/4G connection doesn't drop. On the upside - they're cheap, relatively easy to set up and are not restricted to time or memory limitations as they're live - just your smartphones' signal. So experiment and see if you've an audience out there and get streaming! NORFOLK IN LITERATURE

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 30 2015

Norfolk In Literature “Very flat, Norfolk.” According, that is, to Amanda, in Noel Coward’s Private Lives. We all know it to be untrue of course. And don’t take my word for it, check out Iceni no.23 for the undulating truth on that particular matter. Yet, fallacy or not, that acerbic quote about our fine County remains one of the more notable and easily remembered (even if most people can’t actually say where it is from) references to Norfolk in popular literature. But there are many more. With one of the counties true champions of letters being D.J. (David John) Taylor, the Norfolk born, bred and educated novelist and biographer who lives in Norwich and glories in writing about his home county in his works. Take, for example, his 2006 novel Kept which centres on the emotionally vulnerable widow Mrs Ireland, incarcerated, under the guise of being taken into care, in a large and unkempt home in Norfolk, the state of which neatly demonstrates the decay of both her life and the characters around her. Taylor paints a masterful picture of his home county at the novels beginning, describing it as, “A land of winding backroads and creaking carts and windmills, a land of flood, and eels and elvers and all that comes from water, a land of silence and subterfuge, of things not said but only whispered, where much is kept secret which would be better laid open to scrutiny". PAGE

Haunting words that speak of a darker Norfolk in Victorian times but which are, perhaps, as perfect a description of the county now as they were then. Into more contemporary times but as dark as they come with Devices and Desires, a 1989 novel from the prolific pen of PD James. This sees her melancholy Detective Adam Dalgliesh sent to a fictional Norfolk village called Larksaken where Dalgliesh has inherited a windmill-maybe James got some inspiration from the sentinel that currently stands at Cley next the Sea? All is, however, not as it should be in that sometimes bleak stretch of coast between Cromer and Great Yarmouth, for the area is currently the hunting ground of a serial killer who has been given the name of the Norfolk Whisperer. James focuses on the traits and torments of her fictional settlement and its people as well as that great Norfolk juxtaposition of sea, sky and tide, three ever presents that mark an eternal backdrop to the story. Few of my generation who grew up sat at their desks at a Norfolk village school will have escaped the presence and popularity of the written works of Arthur Ransome in the school library, with his fifth book in the Swallows and Amazons series, Coot Club a more beguiling option than most for some of us, simply because it was set in Norfolk. In Coot Club, central characters Dick and Dorothea Callum are visiting the Norfolk Broads during their Easter holidays, eager to learn how to sail, and, in doing so, impress the more senior members of the

Swallows and Amazons when they return to their Lake District home. Their adventures see them explore the Broads in some detail and area, becoming sailors rather than landlubbers in the process, something which they share with the countless thousands of others who have done just that in those quiet inland waters. Love on a Branch Line was written in 1959 by John Hadfield. It tells the story of a modest civil servant by the name of Jasper Pye who is sent to Arcady Hall (Arcady is a 16th century English word from the Greek ‘Arcadia’) in order to shut a long running and forgotten governmental department down that is based there. As that name suggests, however, Pye finds life in and around the Hall to be something of a romantic rural idyll and, as a consequence, encounters numerous problems in his quest to close the place down. Stephen Fry is, of course, someone who makes no excuses in his affection for his adopted county. His 1994 novel, Hippopotamus, tells the story of former poet and current critic Edward Wallace who, after being fired by his newspaper, goes to stay at the Norfolk country home of an old school friend and Army colleague, Lord Michael Logan in order to investigate various mysterious happenings at the home, some of which, as it turns out, are as dark and hidden in shadows as some of the legends of the county and its history suggest. The latter years of World War Two saw much of Norfolk annexed by the military in order to become a giant air base for both RAF and US Air Force personnel and hardware. Len Deighton’s Goodbye Micky Mouse

Issue 30 2015

(1982) is set in 1944 and is the story of the 220th Fighter Group of the US Eighth Air Force in the days leading up to the Allies invasion of mainland Europe with this particular group based at an airfield near the fictional Norfolk village of Steeple Thaxted. Part of the plot deals, as you might imagine, with the feelings and reactions of the local people to the sudden influx of US Airmen who frequent their pubs and dances, carry off their women and, generally, take over the area, one that many communities in Norfolk would have had to cope with during those war years when Norfolk was, to all extents and purposes, the focus of an invasion by an foreign army. Another book set in wartime Norfolk is The Custard Boys (1961) which focuses on the plight of another invading army, this time an influx of war refugees who have been sent to the country from London and its outlying areas. Intriguingly, given that it focuses on groups of children and the rich social hierarchy that surrounds them, it has been compared to Lord Of The Flies a book whose shadow it will unfortunately reside in for as long as that is the case. Then of course, there is my own novel (2016/17), no surprises for guessing where that might be set. You can read about it in Iceni first. Norfolk is, as many authors have found and rejoiced in, a luxuriant backdrop for any piece of work, whether that may be for its characters, scenery or a mixture of both. A shame, therefore, that the afore mentioned Amanda, the creation of someone who was normally a wit of the highest order, saw fit to dismiss it so cruelly and inaccurately. So wrong Mr Coward. So very wrong. Edward Couzens-Lake for Iceni Magazine.

Dillinger-style bank heists are being committed by a dangerous gang of little people wearing animal masks. Enter ursine photojournalist Thelonious T. Bear. However, Thelonious soon learns that the South isn't all fried chicken and sweet tea. In between encounters with a trigger-happy farmer and a fire-and-brimstone preacher with a snake, he’s stalked by a man in a red pickup truck and nearly bear-napped by a family of hillbillies. And Thelonious finds himself at the heart of yet another series of crimes! “A fanciful bank robbery in a small-town Southern community entwines a clever British bear as he suffers culture shock. NINA BAKER WINS...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 30 2015

Nina Baker Wins Mogo Award MOGO Award celebrations held at Redhead Day UK 2015 "There is certainly "Ginger Music". Look at the artists who have won the MOGOs - Sheeran, Nash, Welch - They are all a little "different", some are a little "out there". But that is what we are all about, we are different, we are non-conformists, we set trends we don't follow them, we are eternal flames and others get warm in our glow" Other winners include Tori Amos (Best Redhead Female), Newton Faulkner (Best Redhead Male), and Paloma Faith (Best Honorary 'redhead by choice' musician). The audience was delighted by a surprise appearance from Irish singer Orla Gartland. Photographer Kieran Dodds captured photos of redheads for his art project ‘Gingers’, while Jacky Colliss Harvey, author of ‘Red: A Natural History of the Redhead’ answered questions from the audience about how the red haired have been represented through the ages.

Nina Baker Red haired men and women gathered together in London at Redhead Day UK to celebrate their flame haired origins and applaud their brethren’s musical talents at the 2nd annual MOGO (Music of Ginger Origin) awards. The sell-out event had 1,200 pre registrations, making it the largest event of its kind in the UK to date. The event, which took place on Saturday 12th September at Candid Arts Trust in Angel, London showcased a wide spectrum of red haired achievement and talent. There was plenty to see and do with stalls, photographers, competitions and a friendly atmosphere where redheads and their supporters were free to mingle and make new friends. This year’s MOGOs saw a new category which recognises emerging redhead talent, with the winner, Nina Baker, performing on the day. On winning the award Nina said "It is always great to get praise and accolades but it means just that little bit more when it's from your peers. Redheads form less than 2% of the world's population, which instantly makes us the most precious, so to be chosen amongst that pool makes it super special and the rarest of the musical awards" Twitter: @icenimagazine

A new attraction at this year’s event was a speed dating event which sold out weeks in advance and raised money for the Anti-Bullying Alliance. Compeer of the speed dating event Jessica Shailes commented "All of the elements at this years event proved popular, but the speed dating seemed to really catch on. It was amazing to see so many people engaged in conversation. Who knows, we may even see a ginger wedding come out of the event one day!" she adds. Shailes is also the founder of Redhead Day UK, and runs online shop Everything for Redheads (www.everythingforredheads.co.uk). This year she joined up with 2 other prominent members of the ginger community, Barry Singleton, originator of the MOGO awards and owner of Ginger with Attitude (gingerwithattitude.co.uk), and Emma Kelly of Ginger Parrot ( http://gingerparrot.co.uk) to stage the event. "It's my first year organising Redhead Day UK and it’s been a ginger adventure; from picking the venue to seeing redheads queuing to get in, has all been wonderful. The friendly, relaxed atmosphere was exactly what we wanted to achieve" says Emma "Having the Anti- Bullying Alliance on board has been incredible too - their work in schools and their Anti-Bullying Week in November are great steps to combat bullying in the UK." NOVA SILVER

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 30 2015

As we write this it really feels as though Summer has come to an end, with the night’s drawing in and those arguments about whether it’s time to put the heating on or just pop (another) jumper on. But there’s nothing nicer about this time of year than a walk through the Norfolk countryside and spotting the changes in the weather. If you’ve been into our shop before you’ll know how much we here at Nova HQ are influenced by our beautiful surroundings and we try to reflect that with many of the pieces we have to offer. You’ll notice this season we have introduced one of our favourites, the hunting Barn Owl necklace- a really wearable piece that still makes an impact.

We’ve talked before about the rose gold trend and it seems to be going strong for the next season. It’s a brilliant way to introduce some of those warm Autumnal colours into your wardrobe, whether with a subtle bracelet poking out of a jumper, of a glimpse of an earring. Our Faraway trees collection has been consistently popular, and we’ve brought them out in a rose gold plate which has been going down a storm. Don’t forget about yellow gold plate too, which has been going from strength to strength and can add a slightly more vintage look to an outfit.

We had a lot of interest in our longer length chains recently- always a sure sign that the weather is cooling as people are wearing more layers and looking for chains that will sit happily on top of warmer jumpers. Simply popping a favourite pendant onto a new chain can give a new lease of life to a well-loved favourite.

We hope you’re enjoying the ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ as much as we are!

ICENI INTERVIEWS

Issue 30 2015

Iceni Interviews Ashley Pearce Award winning designer Interview by Jessie Quick Mystic Magic certainly is mysterious and magical, how would you explain your creations? My creations are a work of pure

imagination infused with art and fashion that like to test the boundaries between both dimensions allowing others to also indulge in my bizarre fantasies. I like to put a tiny piece of my spiritual self within each design giving them a crazy life of their own which in some ways brings comfort knowing I’ll always be with them wherever they travel to. When I take the time to gaze upon my designs it’s like they deeply stare back at me reflecting a coded fragment of my life, almost like a secret time capsule that only I can read.

Your Mask and Head Wear Couture is eccentric, diverse and individual, what/who inspires your creations? I draw my inspiration from the earth and the abyss of the night skies as flickering lights of twinkling stars whisper softly into my dreams like muses. When I look upon the world and it’s day to day life I am inspired by all its beauty whether it be the textured colors of nature, architectural shapes or even just to simple things like a shop window display or a pile of junk, some people may see it as nothing more than what it is but I like to look beyond the obvious and see the potential.

You mention on your website you suffered from bullying in high school. Is this something, which may have encouraged you to create masks? In some ways yes, I’ve always had a strange fascination with masks of all sorts Twitter: @icenimagazine

and from a very young age I’d gained accustomed to masking life with a simple smile to hold back the hidden emotions of what was really going on behind closed doors. When I was bullied at school the masks of my emotions grew so thick that even I when looking in the mirror could no longer see my true self. By being bullied everything that was me had been painfully skinned from my body and I couldn’t even begin to see a way of life after high school nor getting a normal job so I made a plan to sacrifice all that I had left to start the healing process and becoming a mask maker, slowly peeling back each face I had created for myself and sealing it into a physical mask of beauty. I wanted to turn what had been a torturous situation into something positive and prove I was not a lost cause.

In reference to your email to us, you stated you welcome the challenge to create exclusive 'out of the box' designs for discerning clients. What separates your work from the evergrowing fashion industry? I truly believe

everyone has their own individual unique hand printed style that’s injected into their work no matter what it may be. What makes my design work different from most others is that I am fully self-taught. I have never been trained up by anyone or shown PAGE

any helpful methods that I have not learned by my own self through trial and error.

From personal experience when I’ve seen others who have been mentored they’re work tends to be mostly an extension of that who has trained them. It’s like the better part of their creativeness has been extracted and replaced with the teacher’s robotic ideas, which can make them narrow sighted and uneasy to step out their comfort zone. I’m never afraid to experiment and test the boundaries passed their limits and beyond plus I also am a good listener to criticism allowing me to all the time better myself. With specializing in bespoke design I am always ready to take onboard my clients ideas no matter how freaky they may seem (trust me I’ve seen it all!) and together we shall create a work of art they’ll love. A good handful of people who go into fashion have a passion for it and yet there are also those who are money driven only looking to profit themselves to a comfy living. You can see it in the details. Any normal person being a fashion designer knows there is rarely a quick fix and you’ll no doubt spend more than what you make. I’m just happily doing what I love and putting all that I have into it.

How do you stay up to date with fashion?

Mostly it’s from updates on Facebook and Pintrest as I surround myself with lots of wonderful people who constantly feed me with new ideas. Fashion magazines and TV too when I get a spare moment to breath. I like to set trends not follow them and yet funnily enough I always seem to be on trend! My family thinks it must be a gift passed down from my mum as she’s always a very fashionably creative person.

42

How do you decide on what materials to use for your designs? They

tend to choose themselves if that makes any sense! Twitter: @icenimagazine

I get a rough idea as to what I would use but often during the crafting process everything evolves to new methods. I love to browse Etsy and eBay to resource most my quality materials from all over the world as you can always guarantee you’ll find something extra special no one else in UK will have, giving my designs that added uniqueness. Also I make regular trips to my local haberdashery shop, which as you can imagine for me is like a kid being unleashed in a toy shop!

Your work was featured by Paloma Faith’s stylist on the cat walk at the NEC Clothes Show Live. If you could have anyone model your designs, who would it be and why?

Naturally I would say Lady Gaga as from day one when she first came about with her ‘Just Dance’ song I’ve always wanted to make something for her even before she really started to wear all the OTT stuff. But the business side of me is poking to say I should try and get a member of royalty to wear one of my headwear designs to a special event like Kate Middleton or perhaps the Queen if she fancies having an off day and wearing some crazy hat creation! As for my current self I would love to see my Mystic Magic stuff actually styled on Paloma Faith or someone like Katy Perry and Rihanna. Anyone like them who has their own defining style that stands out from all the rest would be the perfect kind of person to wear my designs. An all time dream come true would be to do a collaboration with my favorite photographer Kirsty Mitchell or at least one day meet her.

Your website presents photography of your work. The ‘Shades of’ section includes the use of black and white images, working particularly well with a lace material mask. What did you want to tell people with these images? Is there a story behind your creations? Yes, All my designs have something to say about themselves it’s up to the individual to open the connection and see what their story holds. For each person it could be something different, the aim is to get you to imagine what happens next within the image. I love to create stories with deep meaning that never presents itself at first look. One of my upcoming releases for Easter 2016 is entitled ‘Haus Of Candy’,

inspired by the warped reality of movie director Tim Burton and the story of Frankenstein. The images for this set haven’t long been completed and trust me they are definitely something sweet to behold, showcasing full handmade looks by me. With my ‘Shades Of’ photo shoot I bet you can probably already guess it was inspired by the recent release Fifty Shades of Grey. My goal was to create a darkened beauty collection that puts a high fashion spin on the theme and in a bizarre way adds a new sense of edgy drama to my work that I’ve never adventured into before, opening doors to a new type of customer and yet showing everyone else how you can make anything into a stylish statement. Just like the image of my rope sunglasses paired with a bondage rope boob tube, so many people have said how it reminds them of a Twiggy photo and yet I can easily imagine someone on a sunny beach wearing it. As once said I love to experiment.

Animal Heritage is another fascinating section of your work. It almost looks like it should be in a Tim Burton movie, what stimulated you to create animal masks and headwear? Autumn, festival season and Wind in the Willows! I wanted to again create something fashionable with a vintage twist showing how masks can easily be incorporated into normal everyday fashion and with summer festivals being a big thing in UK it allowed me to showcase how you can become one with nature and be a party animal by wearing an animal mask!

At the time vintage heritage and furs were big on the fashion scene and I sort to take full advantage in combining both styles together. Later did I realize this mask collection was versatile enough to suit almost any theme going and can be reinvented over and over again.

and be prepared to take onboard criticism but think of it as a positive to help better your talents no matter how silly the opposition may sound. Never be afraid to kick the ‘box’ and step out of your comfort zone to take a risk. You can’t please everyone so do what you love for yourself - An adventure into new things is always like a blind leap of faith that tends to rise higher than a jumping fall…

Some of the most import key skills I learned through experience are to be smart thinking with a great down to earth personality that’s always open to listen to others while still maintaining that ‘thick skin’ to laugh off the bad stuff you’ll inevitably get thrown your way at some point. Always make sure to pace yourself and never take on far too much work than what you are able to handle. A most recent lesson I’ve had to yet again learn is the harsh reality of keeping all your colleagues at arms width until they have proven themselves worthy - Don’t ever let anyone use you for their own self gain as I’m sure just like me you’ll come across plenty of talent sucking leeches that once they’ve got their prickly teeth into you it’s damn hard to get free of them. Finally the most important thing to remember is enjoy yourself and relish in your achievements as happiness is sure to illuminate in all aspects of your work and everyone will warmly see that.

You mentioned you are fininalising your 2015 collections, what are you plans for the future? Lots of exciting secrets that I’m having to bite my tongue on speaking and even a few that I may not know yet! All I can leave you with is a mix of random words, Romanian Gypsies, Oriental, Sisters of the Forest and of course the updates of my anticipated Redemption collection. My mind is constantly full of ideas to unleash upon the world.

What advice would you give to aspiring fashion designers, and what skills are important for a successful career in fashion?

Be yourself and don’t ever let anyone try to dampen your spark as that glowing light will be the thing to which defines your whole career. Always aim high Twitter: @icenimagazine

MOTORING REVIEW Issue 30 2015

DS5 Review By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - tweeting @carwriteups

The DS5 used to have a Citroën badge on it. But not anymore.

When the first DS5 came out four years ago, it was instantly criticized for the chassis’ shortfalls.

DS is now a brand in its own right, and the DS5 is the first separate model the French auto maker has produced.

Not only did the earliest models blunder over the edges of Britain’s pothole-ridden roads, but the rear suspension’s endeavours to soak up the jolts also brought about a booming knocking feel.

The most evident changes are to the motor’s ‘face’, where the fresh DS company grille makes its entrance. It supersedes the old snout which sported the dual Citroën Chevrons as its moniker. Now the grille is more erect and gets a fat, gleaming surround. There have also been nips and tucks to the headlights and to the appearance of the lower bumper. Step inside the DS5, and the unique cabin - similar to that of an aircraft, with switches everywhere, including the roof - now gets a touchscreen, Mirror Link for smartphones and a sat-nav system as standard on both Prestige and Elegance trims. The most significant alterations to the latest DS5, though, are under the metal. PAGE

44

Citroën stepped up to the plate and pretty much fixed this, but wheeling out the new DS model was the best thing to do, because it’s 100% sorted now. The reason for this is because the DS5 of today has a taller ride height as well as renewed shock absorbers. Now, the media often gets sent the highest trim level car to test, and DS didn’t disappoint here - sending me the DS5 in flagship, ‘Prestige’ guise. Behind the wheel, my BlueHDi 150 press car motored along well, hooked up to a six-cog manual gearbox. The 147bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine is quiet, and fairly quick, but this is no racing car. Expect body roll if you chuck it through corners and if you keep

hammering the bends, don’t be surprised if you lose front-end traction pretty swiftly, too. The DS5 does churn out lots of mid-range thrust, though. This is good for when you want to build up speed without changing gear, making motorway commuting more of a relaxing experience than a chore. The raised ride height makes it very easy to get comfortable, and the ‘in-yer-face’ dashboard, combined with a shallow windscreen, give you a sense of inclusion. Things are a bit snugger for your rear passengers, and the lack of room in the glove box and the absence of cup holders is a bit of a let-down, too. Thankfully, the large, rectangular boot goes a long way to make up for it, as it will gladly consume everyone’s luggage. If you are bored to tears by all the German cars you see on our roads, then this DS will charm you with its stand-outof-the-crowd

looks alone. You will also like this DS5 if you enjoy a raised ride height but don’t want a sport utility vehicle (SUV). As well as being a handsome looking car with lots of road presence, the DS5 is one of the safest motor’s on the market, having achieved a five star Euro NCAP safety rating. Economy throughout the whole range is excellent, too, with the Prestige BlueHDi 150 returning an official combined average of 68.9mpg.

Issue 30 2015

Iceni Interviews Claire Fowler Wedding & Social Events Coordinator at Sprowston Manor Marriott Hotel & Country club What inspired you to become and how long have you been a wedding Co-ordinator?

How can couples most effectively use your services? My brides and grooms know they can

Being a wedding coordinator is something I always saw myself doing and I was lucky enough to get the job at an incredible venue, Sprowston Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club. I have been a wedding coordinator at the manor for a year and I feel so lucky to be a part of so many couples’ special day.

What is your first step when you meet a couple? When I first meet a couple, I like to hear

I have always had a particular interest in weddings my poor boyfriend is subjected to hours of wedding related television shows each week and I spend far too much time on social media researching up-andcoming trends and themes.

How would you describe what you do and what does your work entail? I am the hotel’s

point of contact for all brides and grooms - first I’ll arrange an initial meeting so that I can introduce myself and show them around our beautiful event spaces, helping them to imagine what it would be like on their big day. I also help them throughout the planning process, from choosing menu options for their guests to helping them find the right DJs and suppliers for them. We’ll then organise a final meeting where I take each couple through their wedding schedule a few days before the ceremony. We’ll sit and meticulously go through every decoration, every place card, every table setting and so on, so that the couple is truly comfortable with the day’s plans. I go on a journey with each and every couple and it’s wonderful to see it all come together on the most important day of their lives. PAGE

46

come to me with any query they may have. If they need help with anything, I’m always here for them. Whether they’re struggling for ideas, need help with room decoration, or need assistance with a certain theme, they can call or email me at any time to ask for my thoughts. All those hours I spend looking at centre pieces and key themes definitely come in handy!

exactly what they want from their big day, everything from table layout to name cards and favours. I love to describe to them how we can make their dreams a reality. There is nothing quite like envisaging yourself standing in a room knowing that, in a year or so, you will be there to celebrate your love for each other, and I like to be able to bring that image alive for each couple that walks through our doors.

How do you go about co-ordinating a wedding? Communication with the couples is

absolutely key. The information they give me helps our conference & banqueting team make their day run as smoothly as possible. I usually have a six month, three month and final meeting with the couple but if they wish to come in for an ad hoc appointment then I’m more than happy to help. I want to make sure they are happy every step of the way.

Have you had any unusual requests from a couple? I’ve had some wonderful theme requests from

couples in the past, but the strangest request I ever had came from a Best Man. He had reworked the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ theme tune to fit his speech and had

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

ICENI INTERVIEWS Issue 30 2015

requested we play it while he performed dressed as MC Hammer. His speech was certainly one the whole of our banqueting team will always remember!

Have you noticed a change in trends - what is the most popular trend today? There have

been a couple of changes in trends, especially for 2016. Although rustic & vintage themes such as hessian sashes, table runners and the more DIY look are still popular, rich, jewel-like colours are making a comeback. Emerald green, ruby red and royal blue are starting to feed through for 2016 with Moroccan lanterns and beautiful deep coloured flowers as centre pieces becoming one of the key trends. Winter weddings are also extremely popular for 2016, with crisp white linen and log centre pieces with lots of candles and frosted flowers making an appearance. It’s so nice to see such a range of trends becoming more popular because it gives lots of couples the opportunity to find some inspiration for their big day. The key trend we have seen in 2015 is the rustic theme, but it’s such a timeless idea that every single couple can make their own mark with it.

What has been your greatest achievement whilst co-ordinating a wedding? Seeing each couple smiling and happy on their wedding day is the greatest achievement for me.

What do you like most about what you do? I am lucky enough to see each wedding come together through every step of the planning process. I always get to see photos of the bridesmaid dresses (sometimes I’m even lucky enough to get a sneak peak of the actual wedding dress). I get to see photos of the cake they intend to have and I can share in the excitement with the brides and grooms.

Is there anything you would like to add? As

I say to all my prospective brides and grooms, the biggest compliment I can give Sprowston Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club is that you can trust the team implicitly. I’d trust them with my own wedding and one day I hope to have wedding celebrations of my own here at the manor. World War 1 Love Story Heads To Norwich

©Liquid Photo

A controversial play from the Edinburgh Fringe is coming to Norwich Arts Centre on 10 November as part of an extensive national tour.

The Flood by Badac Theatre Company was originally created in 2014 to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, described at the time as ‘the war to end all wars’. This confrontational, intense yet deeply moving drama highlights the devastating effects of the insanity of war on an intimate relationship. Performed by writer/director Steve Lambert and Austrian actor Susanne Gschwendtner it’s an uncompromising portrayal of the unspeakable horror wrought on humanity by wars past, present and, God forbid, future. The Flood is set in the bloody battlefields of WW1. It recreates the unimaginable horror of the conflict with an explicit depiction of the slaughter of millions of soldiers torn from their ordinary lives to fight in perhaps the most hellishly filthily squalid conditions and daily terror endured by man. A parallel love story explores the devastating effects on the women who loved those men. As the insanity of the war intensifies, it follows an emerging relationship between a front line infantryman and the woman whose love gives him hope. The drama switches between the horror of war and their increasingly passionate love affair. The Stage said 'Lambert and Gschwendtner movingly embody the emotional costs of war' They play people whose love is irreversibly affected by unfolding events, by the emotional and psychological effects of life during wartime. This is London based Badac’s 11th original production. Their work focuses on human rights issues and is brave, dark, all-consuming and stunning in every meaning of the word. Celebrity fans include Steven Berkhoff who said 'The strength and power of their work is extremely rare.’ www.badactheatre.com
