Why You Should And What To Consider

Welcome To Iceni Magazine, “It’s summer and time for wandering” Kellie Elmore Welcome to Issue 110 of Iceni Magazine! This month’s focus is on Holidays – adverts for getaways are all over the media right now, dreaming of jetting off somewhere without a care in the world. Susan Leigh analyses what you can do to refresh your relationship while you’re away (Pages 34 &35). Pages 38 and 39 cover what you can do to minimise the risk of facing a holiday disaster – and let’s face it, everyone has had way too much to deal with over the past couple of years to tolerate anything else going wrong. Our favourite home educator, Missy, is back this month (Pages 42 & 43) with exciting news as well as details about her return to a popular childhood holiday destination, this time with her children in tow. Elsewhere in the mag, check out Gadget Man Matt’s review of the PodZilla flexible tripod (Pages 22 & 23) – we have decided that we definitely need this in our lives. Struggling to fit exercise into your busy life? Elliot from Armoured Muscle shares a quick total body workout that can help you to stay fit and healthy without sacrificing too much of your time (Pages 24 & 25). While May’s weather has been somewhat changeable, we hope that June will bring sunshine and a bit of heat with not too much pollen. Don’t forget your sun cream, antihistamines and sunglasses as well as to enjoy the latest issue of Iceni Magazine.

THE BENJAMIN FOUNDATION

Issue 110 2022

The Benjamin Foundation For over 25 years, children, young people and families across Norfolk and Suffolk have been supported by The Benjamin Foundation to overcome big challenges in their lives. Each night, we accommodate up to 180 vulnerable young people, equating to over 50,000 safe nights’ sleep a year. They can finally feel safe from youth homelessness. Each week, 150 young people access our emotional wellbeing support improving their mental health, increasing their self-esteem to finally feel understood.

Each year, over 400 young people attend our youth work in the community to gain new life skills, expand their horizons and finally feel confident. Overall, in the region of 2,000 local children and young people every year finally feel hopeful of a better future because of the work of The Benjamin Foundation.

A brighter future awaiting Rosie

When she was aged 18, Rosie left home as she felt that she wouldn’t be accepted for the person she wanted to be. She moved across country, staying with people she did not like or get on with before securing a place at university. She says at this time that she felt scared and alone and she was finding the course increasingly difficult. She was also experiencing a significant decline in her mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Halfway through University, Rosie decided to withdraw from her course, with fears of not being accepted for who she truly wanted to be. At this time, she was going through a transition and would hide this from her peers, as she feared what their reaction would be. She would change into women’s clothes in an alleyway to avoid anyone finding out. She eventually felt she had to move out of the shared accommodation if she was going to live the way she wanted and be true to herself. Rosie then spent time training her voice and continuing her journey to transition before moving back to East Anglia. Over the next few years, Rosie moved around, sofa surfing staying with friends and then living in her car travelling the country for six months before a friend told her about The Benjamin Foundation’s Anchorage service.

“I was living very unhealthy and eating raw foods. I didn’t feel safe enough to beg on the street. I did what I could. I applied to The Benjamin Foundation and got a room with Anchorage in one of their shared accommodations. Anchorage saved my life as I would still be living in my car if it wasn’t for the service,” she says.

“I finally feel that, although life is still a struggle, my mental health is improving and the support I’ve received has been good for me.” *Name has been changed.

My New Pad One of the best bits about moving to my new pad is the garden.

Above: Keri Beevis

My last house had barely any outside space, so it’s been a real novelty having a patio and grass and a safe space for my cats, Ellie and Lola, to play.

The previous owners were clearly keen gardeners and there are several mature bushes and shrubs in the borders. This year, I am simply watching to see what comes up and every day is a surprise as different plants are flowering and my garden is a beautiful mass of colour. I was so excited letting the girls outside for the first time. They have been indoor cats for years, so I kept them in for a few months before I let them have their first taste of the outdoors. They are fifteen now and struggle to jump and the garden is fully enclosed, so I feel safe when they are outside. Watching them sniffing the grass and staring in wonder at birds gives me a real kick. And don’t worry, readers, our feathered friends are safe. Ellie and Lola are literally scaredy cats and simply sit and stare. Life is domesticated bliss and the other day as I stood drinking my coffee, looking over my beautiful garden and considering how lucky I am, Ellie slunk into my vision as she crossed the lawn to my patio.

where my hand had been rummaging through soil the previous day. I pulled a yuck face, but being in a positive mood I silently congratulated her. It might not be her litter tray, but at least she was going outside and not on my carpets (Ellie is the queen of pussycat naughtiness when it comes to weeing in inappropriate places). I did pick up my most recently planted pot though and sniffed at it gingerly. Finished with her business, Ellie then jumped out of the tub and leapt up onto the fence. At this point my jaw dropped and I nearly dropped my coffee cup. When did my old arthritic cat learn to jump like this? I rushed outside in a panic, scared she was going to disappear out of the garden as she nimbly ran along the top of the fence. ‘Ellie?’ At which point she turned and gave me a haughty look, and I realised it wasn’t my cat. So, things we have learnt from this encounter. 1. Ellie has a double. 2. I would be rubbish at picking my cat out of a pussy line-up 3. My garden is the neighbourhood toilet Best my girls get outside and start defending their land.

That’s odd, I thought. She was upstairs asleep on the bed and I never saw her sneak past me. As I watched, she made her way over to one of the tubs of compost I have been using to pot up my indoor cuttings and climbed inside, squatted down, and while maintaining eye contact with me through the window, defiantly had a pee in the exact spot

My new book ‘With Friends Like These’ is available now on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited and in paperback. Audio coming soon. Follow me on Facebook or Twitter for more information.

MUCH ADO ABOUT...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 110 2022

Much Ado About Everything Have you ever noticed how people who are stressed and low of mood often feel that everyone is against them? They may see their neighbours as selfish and unfriendly, their family as uncaring and disinterested, they complain that their colleagues are unhelpful and overly ambitious, friends may be seen as too busy and unsupportive, they even speculate that strangers look at them in a judgemental, dismissive way. If these feelings persist, it may be helpful for them to book a check-up at their family doctor’s or see a therapist, as this mindset could be symptomatic of depression, which can be helped by medication and counselling. But many of us have some experience of feeling helpless, hopeless or unlovable at times, especially if we’ve been through a tough time with rejection or hurt.

What can we do when everything seems negative, when we make much ado about everything and can’t see any positives in life. When we feel that everything and everyone is difficult, unpleasant and unkind towards us, how can we help the situation improve? Reflect on any possible triggers that may be exacerbating your downbeat approach to life. Question if there’s something in your past that’s predisposed you to expect the worst. If you’re experiencing a familiar, ‘here I go again’ pattern check to see if this has been triggered in some way. Are you okay with this happening, or would you prefer a different, more appropriate response? Self-protection can assume many forms, one of which is an ‘if I expect the worst, I’ll never be disappointed or caught unawares’ approach. PAGE

MUCH ADO ABOUT...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 110 2022

This might be all well and good, but it’s not a happy or fulfilling way to make decisions or conduct relationships and new opportunities. When we appreciate that much communication is done non-verbally, that what we anticipate and focus on is where we automatically channel our energy, we gain a better understanding of how we shape our lives and our future happiness. Have you been through a tough time of late, working long hours, with too many demands on your energy and emotional reserves? Sometimes learning to say, ‘no’ and take a little time away, even to go for a country walk or enjoy some quality me time, can make the world of difference, help you to reconnect with yourself and feel more in control again. It can become habit to see the world solely through our own eyes, and forget that not everything is about us. Other people may see the world differently. They have their own lives, with issues, concerns and distractions to preoccupy them. They may have been completely unaware

as to how their behaviour affects us, because their focus is on their own issues. They have their own families, finances, career prospects and health situations to contend with. Perspective is important. Check if you’re magnifying something into far more significance than it warrants. Have you got the whole story or are you jumping to conclusions because you’re feeling a little vulnerable? I remember a friend being distressed that she’d not been invited to a ladies lunch, but further investigation revealed that the event was for working mothers and, as she didn’t have children, the organisers didn’t think she’d be interested in attending. When we’re stressed lots of little things, the smallest slights, comments or facial expressions can be quickly honed in on, taking on a whole new level of relevance, with much being read into every sigh, smile, or glance. We can become super-vigilant as our stress responses go into overdrive.

MUCH ADO ABOUT...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 110 2022

Stress can affect us physically, mentally and emotionally. We’re all familiar with the mind-body connection, so apparent when we use phrases like ‘it’s doing my head in’, ‘I’m sick to my stomach’, ‘it’s such a pain in the neck’, ‘I’m choked/heart-broken’. We often internalise mental and emotional stress into our bodies. So, if we’re experiencing more headaches, a flare-up of an old skin condition or our IBS, are struggling with worsening insomnia and poor concentration consider if these symptoms could be signs of overwhelm and stress. At these times we may well become increasingly concerned and preoccupied with our health, often vaguely aware that we’re hijacking ourselves. Help yourself cope better by starting to step away from those feelings and any negative self-talk. Managing triggers more

“ It can become habit to see the world solely through our own eyes, and forget that not everything is about us. Other people may see the world differently.” effectively is important, as you teach yourself to recognise and intercept the warning signs of overwhelm before they become too intense. Detach from being too personally invested and ask yourself if the things you’re bothered about today will really matter in a week or a month’s time. It’s important to change our focus away from being too much about ‘me’ and ‘my’ sensitivity. Explore a different perspective, on how what’s happening might be affecting any others involved. Consider what’s going on in their lives; everyone has their own story, their personal situation and associated stress. When you reflect on what’s going on with them, their perspective and interests, it helps you become more empathic and able to see the bigger picture. Life then becomes a more inclusive experience, more grounded and fulfilling on a daily basis, with less inclination to make much ado about anything!

TRANSPARENCY

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 110 2022

Transparency Transparency… very much a word currently in vogue, and seemingly severely lacking on so many fronts. Whether it’s politicians splitting hairs about what constitutes a gathering (multiples of people), bloggers/influencers not being upfront when they’re advertising (or constantly using filters), or brands making claims that can’t be backed up, transparency is important. Let’s get back to basics. To be transparent is an adjective meaning to be clear and easily understandable (those at No 10 please note). To me it is an indication of honesty - if someone or an organisation are not transparent, I’m naturally suspicious - what have they got to hide? What are they trying to slip by me that they know I’m not going to like? What are they afraid of? I’ve spoken before about this, but greenwashing is a classic case of lack of transparency. Eco or sustainability claims are often vague

and undefined, being used to distract and deflect from what is truly happening within an organisation/brand or product. Whether it’s a case of packaging with pretty pictures of plants and flowers (implying natural ingredients), or the trumpeting of an ‘amazing’ eco range of clothing which makes up a minuscule amount of the overall fast fashion output and you are still encouraged to buy more, it’s just window dressing. Even ITV’s Love Island has dumped fast fashion sponsors for Ebay after a vocal campaign on Twitter - it makes a difference! The need for sustainability in our lives, and ultimately the brands of the products and services we buy and use, cannot be underestimated. All the other ongoing issues pale into insignificance if the natural world, its habitats, and species, continue to disappear. The shortage of cooking oil hasn’t just been caused by the crisis in Ukraine (the world’s largest producer of sunflower oil), but by crop failures due to weather and pest infestations in Canada (one of the largest producers of rapeseed oil) and many other countries. The grain prices are incredibly high currently - some are over 100% up on last year - due to crop failures in many

TRANSPARENCY Issue 110 2022

of the major producing countries, again due to pests (many of the more effective chemicals having been banned) and adverse weather. These issues will have a major impact on other food stuff. In an era where we have access to so much information, it seems many take statements at face value without doing any independent research - it shouldn’t be difficult. If a company makes a claim about sustainability/ eco credentials, they should be able to back these up with evidence. Look for independent accreditation schemes that don’t just apply to the final product but the whole process. A great example of this is COSMOS organic certification. It is the world standard and doesn’t just apply to the ingredients but the whole manufacturing process (including hygiene/cleaning protocols), packaging, printing, the lot. So if instead of facts and evidence, you see fancy words and fluffy pictures beware! Your money is hard-earned and has so many demands on it now, so you are in a powerful position to choose who you spend it with. Become a conscious consumer - to the best of your ability - and know that by doing so you are not only supporting the environment, but also those brands who are putting their efforts into being transparent. It’s hard economically for everyone out there, but the big brands who seem to want to hoodwink you, often have deeper pockets and if we don’t stand up for the inevitably smaller and often independent truly eco brands, we may live to regret it. My advice is to research and challenge - head out armed with your shopping list and be powerfully positive consumers! New Toyota Aygo X Review

By Tim Barnes-Clay. Follow on Instagram: @tbarnesclay and Twitter: @carwriteups. Every car is fair game to get the SUV crossover treatment nowadays - and the latest one to receive it is Toyota’s little city car, the Aygo.

Only a solitary 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine is offered. It produces 72PS and comes with front-wheel drive. You do get a choice of a five-speed manual gearbox or a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), though.

Add some cladding to the exterior, raise the ride height by a few centimetres and add an ‘X’ to the end of the name (even though it’s pronounced ‘cross’) and voila!

Thanks to its light weight and small-scale engine, running costs are likely to be low. There are no surprises behind the wheel, though.

Although the Aygo X looks like the Aygo city car, it’s more closely related to the Toyota Yaris, as it’s based on the same platform.

The powerplant is slow-moving, and while its looks might garner a second glance, nobody will be praising the X for its ability to move away from the traffic lights.

And while the X will be sold alongside the Aygo for the moment, the intention is this new one will eventually take the place of the standard Aygo.

In the time it took to get up to 62mph, I could work out that the Aygo X is far better as a motor to drive around town in. First, the higher ride height means visibility is superior to a standard

city car. And, despite its passive performance, it feels sprightly in heavier traffic. Given the Aygo X is featherlike, it can wind its way through traffic with ease. Its handling won’t be winning many awards, but it does the job, while the additional ride height means the suspension has more give in it. This springy setup helps to smooth out flaws in the blacktop. The body lean is more noticeable than in the regular Aygo, but it’s not excessive. And, thanks to the light steering, the Toyota is agreeable to drive. The CVT gearbox is okay - it means there’s only one gear, so, for all intents and purposes, it’s an automatic. This may make things easier around town, saving you from endless gear changes. Toyota has developed it well, but I still found myself preferring the manual ‘box. The interior is nice, too, and full of funkiness. Some of it will be recognisable to anyone familiar with a Yaris interior, but the Aygo X creates its own persona. Of course, this is a small car, so there isn’t a tremendous amount of space inside. The front isn’t too bad, but adults will struggle to fit - let

alone get comfortable - for any length of time in the rear. Boot space measures up at 231-litres, and you get 829-litres with the rear seats folded down in a 50/50 split. If you need an inexpensive new family runabout that’s perfect for dropping the kids off at school and heading into town to do some shopping, it certainly ticks the right boxes. The Podzilla doubles as a grip, if you want to use it, so it’s a jack of all trades! The device has been built using an aluminium flexible core, which makes bending the three legs extremely easy, but also incredibly grippy too combined with its rubber grip. It’s lightweight at .25kg and has a 1/4" inch standard tripod mount with a flexible ball-head with push-button locking. The phone clamp can handle smartphone widths of between 6,7 - 8.8cm.

I’ve used mini tripods before, but this is my first chance with a flexible type and I found it fun to use and very useful. I was able to film hands-on videos and use if with my action camera to get some cool footage, all in all, I’m impressed and at around £35 for the full kit, I thought it was extremely good value for such a high-quality product. The Joby Podzilla is available from joby.com See you next month. Matt www.thegadgetman.org.uk PAGE

Refresh Your Relationship With A Holiday

Many people have high expectations we collapse in front of the TV or wander off exhausted to bed. of their holidays. They spend weeks, even months, hoping that everything will be blissful, idyllic. Reality can mean that things don’t always go to plan as they discover that they’re not as relaxed with their partner as they’d hoped and may have even grown apart from each other. Holidays can put one heck of a strain on our relationship! It’s interesting that many family lawyers comment that whilst New Year is often the busiest time for people to seek a divorce, after the full-on closeness, stress and drama of a family Christmas hot-housed together, holiday times and long Bank Holiday weekends can equally place an inordinate amount of strain on our relationship. So much of our normal day-to-day living consists of familiar, automatic routines, where we’re aware of our roles, know what’s expected of us, have tasks that we regularly do before

Holidays can put any flaws or short-comings in our relationship under the spotlight as we book time away, expectantly hoping to have fun together and rekindle some of the old spark and intimacy during our trip. How to refresh your relationship with a holiday: ● A de-stress session before your holiday can be a good idea. Clearing your desk, winding down, maybe booking a de-stressing hypnotherapy session so that you can relax immediately your holiday starts, rather than taking two or three days to calm from your busy work schedule can be a useful tactic. A pre-holiday massage is another valuable way to clear pre-holiday stress and tension. ● Discuss in advance if there are specific things you’d each like to do during your holiday.

One may simply want to relax by the pool or on the beach, whilst the other would hate to do that and prefers to explore, walk miles, browse through markets and sight-see. Check that you’re happy to compromise and do a little of both or are comfortable at spending time enjoying some things separately. Then any areas of potential dissent are discussed and agreed in advance. ● Check out what’s free. Whilst it great to go away and relax doing whatever takes your fancy, no one wants to come home to financial worries and having to cut corners due to overspending. Check the prices in advance of various admittance charges and activities, the booking requirements for children’s clubs, what’s available by way of trips and excursions. Parks, museums and beaches may provide hours of relaxed fun for minimal or no expense. ● Children often benefit from playing and spending time with other children whilst they’re on holiday, as do their parents from having a little free time on their own. You may need to pre-book children’s clubs, but then ensure you make the most of that personal time by doing companionable things together as a couple. ● Some couples only realise whilst on holiday that they’ve lost the art of chatting conversationally with each other. They’ve stopped sharing banter and chit-chat and now simply exchange routine information and updates. Holidays may be a revelation, when they discover how far they’ve drifted apart and lost touch with each other’s lives, interests, hopes and dreams. ● If this is you, your holiday can be a good time to focus on what needs to be done; talking, taking time for intimacy and love-making, having fun together. It can be a great opportunity to sensitively discuss your relationship and agree on the importance of scheduling regular ‘us’ time as part of your post-holiday plans.

Issue 110 2022

● If you’re going away as part of a group determine in advance how much time you want to spend together. Agree when you’re happy to meet up, whether it be at mealtimes, in the evenings or for specific trips and activities. Otherwise, the holidays can become a tedious round of time spent waiting for others or discussing what you’d like to do. ● If you’re spending the holidays at home ensure that some time is committed to fun activities and not just doing chores, DIY and projects around the house. Plan some leisurely time together for relaxing lunches, walks and catching up on idle conversation. Aim to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company. Have a plan A and plan B, so that wet days and dry days are covered; picnics, treasure hunts, sports days and barbecues or craft days, board games, baking and charades can be options. Holidays can provide an opportunity to put life’s daily stresses and pressures to one side for a while and interact as the couple you used to be before life/children/work/stress got in the way. They can provide time to revisit what attracted you to each other in the first place, reconnect with your relationship and remind yourselves of how good your relationship can be with a little regular effort. Use the opportunity to relax, practise sensitivity, mutual respect and commit to communicate well whilst letting go of some of your daily stresses and strains. Your holiday can be a time to refresh both yourself and your relationship. Article By Susan Leigh, Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Author & Media Contributor www.lifestyletherapy.net PAGE

Camping Tips:

How To Embrace Camping As A Family

When it comes to the family holiday, Having the right tent you might be trying to explore One of the first things to consider would be different options. Many people don’t always enjoy a holiday abroad. They might have a fear of flying, or it could be that the hotel and beach combination doesn’t appeal. Taking trips in the UK can often be a source of great family memories and camping is one of the options that you might be considering. However, if you are a first-timer, or have done it before but never with your family, then here are some of the camping tips to help you embrace it as a family.

having the right tent. It is important for you to ensure that you have a tent big enough so that the whole family can sleep comfortably. You also want to ensure that there is enough space. right cooking equipment for the simple things such as warming up soup or making a cup of tea will make the trip far more appealing. Of course, you can go out, but this is a budget-friendly way to enjoy a holiday. Finding the right campsite It doesn’t matter if this is your first or tenth camping trip, finding the right campsite is essential. Everyone will have different priorities but the things to look out for would be the facilities and how close the site is to a town or village, or even things like countryside walks or the beach. Planning what you will do Initially, the first day will be spent setting up your campsite and tent, but then once you have everything organised, what next? This is why it is important for you to plan your camping trip. Think about the places you want to see and the things that you want to do. Maybe it is hikes or biking trails, or perhaps you want to seek out tourist attractions. Plan just as you would any other holiday. Bringing different things with you A camping trip means no restrictions on your luggage. Your only limit is what you can fit in

your car or trailer, so take advantage and bring everything with you. Garden games, bikes, and things for your children to play with or do. The more you have, the more they will be happy to embrace the camping trip. Embracing the elements Finally, make sure you are prepared to embrace the elements. You might not guarantee good weather, so be prepared for anything. It is also the perfect opportunity to spend time outside and away from screens and technology. Enjoy it. Hopefully, these tips will help you to embrace camping as a family. PAGE

Holiday Disasters: What Might Happen And How You Can Avoid It Your holiday is one of those things that Your suitcase not arriving at your destination you might count down to. After all, for so many of us it is that one opportunity in the year to switch off, explore a destination and completely relax, am I right? Having a holiday means you get to enjoy some good weather, enjoy a new culture, or get that important time with your family. They are also not exactly cheap, so when things go wrong it can often send you into turmoil. I wanted to share some of the common holiday disasters and how you can avoid them yourself.

One of the first things that you may experience is your suitcases not arriving at your destination. There is nothing worse than being stood at the conveyor belt and no more cases are coming out. Often the suitcases are located and sent to you at a later date. But this is where travel insurance can be your big saviour. You can claim back for lost luggage or purchases you need to make while you wait for your case. Also, a great tip is to ensure that the flight details are on your case and that you make yours easily identifiable with a luggage label or something unique to you.

“ Booking the wrong dates, having cancelled bookings, or even just making a mistake on your booking can be very costly.” Becoming ill while you are away There is nothing worse than being ill on holiday, especially for things like food poisoning. Travel insurance can help with the costs of medical treatment, but you might also want to be savvy with your choices on holiday when it comes to food and drink. Always pack with you some medication for upset stomachs or pain relief. This can help you feel back to your normal self. Missed or cancelled bookings Booking the wrong dates, having cancelled bookings, or even just making a mistake on your booking can be very costly. Often these issues occur if you book things separately or

directly with an airline or hotel. However, if you are worried about this happening booking a package deal with a travel agent can give you extra protection and assurances that you won’t lose out. Late departure or cancelled flights Late or cancelled flights can cause big problems when it comes to your holiday. It might cause you to miss a connecting flight, or lose out on your holiday altogether. Often this is out of your control but you can be assured that late and cancelled flights often mean you get some form of compensation. Not having your expectations met Finally, many of us will have been in a situation where we are not having our expectations met. It could be that the hotel doesn’t look like the pictures, it is having building work that wasn’t advertised, or there was misinformation on the location. To name a few things. However, you can try and avoid this being the case by reading online reviews. Social media and review websites are great to give you inside information on a holiday or location before you book. Hopefully, these tips will help you avoid or handle holiday disasters in the future. PAGE

Investing In A Campervan

Why You Should And What To Consider When it comes to holidays, not all of us The different types of vacations you want to stick with the standard hotel could have and beach combination. The world is a big place, and because of that, some of us are a little more adventurous with our destination choices. Having said that, more of us like to do different things on holiday. Find untouched beaches, hike mountains or use the bikes to explore. This is when investing in a campervan or motorhome could give your holidays much more flexibility. It also means that you can head away sooner rather than having to book things well in advance. However, is there anything to consider? Here are some reasons why you should and what to remember if you are thinking of getting a campervan.

Having a campervan that you have invested in, means that the type of vacation you have can be a lot more varied. Packing up a campervan is more flexible, and you can take things such as bikes for enjoying different national parks and countryside locations. You can pack up your hiking gear to head off up the mountains, or you can even pack up the camping gear to get closer to nature and enjoy the best of both worlds. Not to mention the standard road trip that helps you see much more of the destination you have chosen to travel to. How great is that?

Remember there will be maintenance costs Of course, like anything that you invest in, there will be maintenance costs, and the best way to compare the types of costs you might need to

Now that both children are growing in confidence and keen to explore, it seems like the right time to venture slightly further afield.

Life is for living, and childhood is fleeting… I love devoting time to my children and saying ‘yes’ wherever possible.

The weather is warming up, and we are fortunate to belong to a boating family. So, our next adventure will be on the River Hamble in Hampshire.

But in an ongoing cycle of commitment and expense, it can be difficult to allocate time and money for holidays. We have enjoyed some brief coastal breaks in Norfolk over the last two years of somewhat limited travel. And because my daughter is

because we’re not tied to term-time schedules, I hope this will be the first of many visits to the South coast. Watching my kids experience life is precious to me, and quality time together is amongst the principal deciding factors in our home education journey. And although our days are filled with wonder, spontaneity and laughter, some evenings leave me filled with noise, disarray and fatigue. When my little live wires have settled down to sleep, there is barely time to recuperate before we begin the next day. And honestly, the lack of personal downtime does concern me. With obvious health benefits, such as reduced stress and improved immune function, I would love more access to rest and relaxation.

A staycation in the UK with children, although special, does not qualify as parental repose. But the sun, sea and sand of the Algarve coast sounds much closer. Factor in Grandma & Grandad’s babysitting service to allow five days of leisurely bliss and five nights of uninterrupted sleep… and imagine my smug anticipation as I begin the four-week countdown until this becomes a reality. Aside from the perks of the holiday itself, the ensuing rejuvenation will be welcomed. Throughout the bustle of parenthood I will continue to make holidays happen, for myself and the children. Upcoming breaks seem to boost motivation, and make the tricky moments a little easier to navigate. As much as we live for the moment in this house, it is also important to look forward.

Gemini 22 May - 21 June

Taurus 21 April - 21 May

Cancer 22 June - 23 July

This is a time of adventures closer to home, that are motivated by curiosity and a love of new discoveries. With Mercury forging ahead from June 1st, it’s time to make a start on any plans that have been on the back burner. You may have your sights set on far horizons too, and a course or class could be perfect for your needs. Ready to give your place a makeover? The Sun’s move into your home zone from week three, can be excellent for decluttering and redecorating, Aries. Sobering Saturn rewinds in your sector of career for some months, bringing a chance to step back and reset your priorities. Finances are emphasized from week three, as your canny side comes to the fore. As June gets underway you’re in a quieter phase, with the Sun in a spiritual sector making this a time to reflect and recharge. It’s an opportunity to tie up loose ends and let go of anything that is holding you back. Now is the time, Capricorn.

If plans related to the home have been on hold, they may show signs of movement. The pace picks up, and what seemed impossible could now seem very likely. The Sun in Gemini encourages you to get into a playful mood, and enjoy some down time. Have a hobby you enjoy? Indulge to the max! Plus, getting organized may help you accomplish more, as the New Moon in Cancer can be the perfect time to kickstart positive habits that will make a noticeable difference.

Homely affairs can keep you busy, and you’ll enjoy having people over and doing things with the family. You may be in demand too, as the midmonth Supermoon in your sector of ambition, puts you in the spotlight. It could be time to celebrate your success. As the Sun moves into your leisure zone, creative and romantic activities may call out to you. Making time for the things you love can leave you more joyful. Plus, as Neptune rewinds, you’ll see the truth about something.
