June has been a very hot month, hitting the late 20’s and early 30’s for many consecutive days in a row. So, while the days are a little bit cooler and before the summer holidays are upon us once again, sit back and take some time to catch up on the local gossip in issue 51. July is proving to be a busy month with the likes of the Holkham Hall Country Fair and The Fairhaven Garden Concerts. Plus, for the dad readers out there, The Dad Network will be holding some opportunities for them and other dads to get together. Family is something that is very important over summer, as we head off on our holidays or just spend some lazy days in the sun together. Sadly, for some, summer isn’t as great as it could be. Our Charity of the year - The Benjamin Foundation once again are looking for landlords with 3 or 4 bedrooms houses to rent, to help tackle the growing youth homelessness in our area.

THE BENJAMIN FOUNDATION Issue 51 2017

The Benjamin Foundation News Annual Staff Away Day Once a year we organise an Away Day for our staff and this year over 100 attended. With our charity spread across Norfolk and Suffolk the event gives our staff a rare chance to spend time together. Many though can’t attend as they continue to provide support to children, young people and families. We started the day with a Quiz to break the ice and provide some healthy competition between colleagues! This was followed by a talk from our CEO Tony Ing who outlined some of the challenges facing our sector as well as noting our success and future opportunities.

Our guest speaker, Tracy Clark, was a real inspiration to everyone in the room. An open water swimmer with many achievements under her belt Tracy told us her incredible story including the obstacles she had overcome to complete a number of swimming challenges including the English Channel, an Ice mile in the Netherlands and the Manhattan Island swim to name but a few.

The last part of the afternoon was spent providing recognition to some of our staff, a lovely way to end a great day. Long service awards were presented to staff who've reached 5, 10 and 15 years' service. We then had our first 'Heart of The Benjamin Foundation' awards. Each award winner had been nominated by a colleague for their work to bring our key words to life for people we support: Hope, Opportunity, Stability and Independence.

We'd like to give a huge thank you to all our staff and everyone else who made this an inspiring and memorable day.

And for the first time in our rich history, the club has found its first ever stadium sponsor, now named The Amber Dew Events Stadium. PAGE

SCULPTURE TRAIL

Issue 51 2017

Sculpture Trail Set To Grace The Waveney Valley This Summer A trail of sculptures and site-specific artwork will lead visitors to an idyllic site in the Waveney Valley this summer.

Rachael Long

The fourth Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail will host the work of more than 50 artists on a threeacre site of hidden paths, romantic groves and secretive corners in a little-known site on the edge of the Waveney Valley. Organised by Waveney & Blyth Arts the event builds on the success of last year’s trail and will take place at the Raveningham Centre near Beccles. The Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail annually attracts thousands of visitors to the region to see the work of artists from around the country. Many established artists such as Vanessa Pooley, Liz McGowan, Gordon Senior, Patrick Elder, Simon Griffiths and Meg Amsden will be joined by up and coming artists taking part for the first time.

“There will be 50 artists displaying sculptures and responding to the space with a variety of materials and techniques as well as a pop up shop selling smaller works.”

Curator Sarah Cannell, who has encouraged artists to create work in response to the site, said: “I am thrilled to be curating the sculpture trail again.

The trail will feature site-specific work, 3-D constructions and sculpture throughout the site including textile works, bronze sculpture, ceramics and a sound installation.

“The three-acre site is an exciting challenge for both myself and the artists. It has a variety of different settings from open meadow to magical secret garden and is all set in the grounds of a beautiful Tudor farmhouse.

A programme of workshops, guided walks, and events will accompany the event, including a family day and a curator’s guided tour of the site to give people an insight into how the sculpture trail was created.

Summer Networking At Its Finest: Lunch On The Green 2017 Mix, mingle, and soak up the sun at Clapham & Collinge’s annual summer networking and fundraising event in support of Break Charity, Wednesday 12th July. With plenty of local businesses exhibiting across all sectors, many offering special deals and delights, this fabulous fundraising event is a great opportunity to network with the Norfolk business community whilst supporting a fantastic Norfolk charity. Break is a children's charity which provides a diverse range of specialist residential and community based services for vulnerable young people in Norfolk. Clapham & Collinge Solicitors have supported Break for many years with our annual Lunch on the Green fundraiser, sponsorship of a GoGoGorilla and GoGoDragon Sculpture. GUNG-HO! DEBUT

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 51 2017

Gung-Ho! Debut First look at world’s tallest inflatable water slide ahead of Gung-Ho! debut These are the first images of the world’s tallest inflatable water slide which will be coming to Norfolk as part of Gung-Ho!.

It has been part of the obstacle line up since we started Gung-Ho! in 2014, but this year we’ve made a few changes to make it even better.

The 72ft tall, 200ft long ‘Thriller’ is the showpiece obstacle of the fun-filled 5km – the biggest obstacle course on EARTH - which comes to Earlham Park, Norwich, on Saturday 16th September.

We went to Manchester last year and it was raining hard, but that only served to make the Thriller even faster and more fun for people taking part.

Participants in the run, which features ten obstacles requiring enough air to inflate 100 MILLION footballs, will hit speeds of up to 40mph on the iconic slide.

That’s why we have added water to it for 2017, and the results have been amazing. It has been more popular than ever, with the screams even louder than before!

Runners have already tested out the slide ahead of its arrival in Norfolk, and course creator Alex Winters can’t wait to see its regional debut.

We are bringing Gung-Ho! to Norfolk for the first time this year and I can’t wait to see people’s faces as they see it for the first time and then fly down it at a ridiculous speed.

Alex said: “The Thriller is our most popular obstacle, and always gets rave reviews from runners.

I have a feeling this will be the best Gung-Ho! debut we’ll have ever had, so come on Norfolk, get your tickets and show us what you’ve got!”

GUNG-HO! DEBUT Issue 51 2017

Alex came up with the idea for Gung-Ho! in 2014 while sat in front of the TV watching Ninja Warrior with his three children. The event is now half way through its second national tour, with more than 100,000 people taking part in Gung-Ho! over the past two years. As well as the five-storey Thriller, participants in the exciting event will get to pit their wits against obstacles including an inflatable climbing wall, giant ball pit, labyrinth and gauntlet. Many runners will take part for charity, with thousands of pounds expected to be raised for good causes this time around. Participants can go Gung-Ho! in aid of the race’s national charity partner BBC Children in Need, who are offering discounted tickets and a free t-shirt to those who run as part of Team Pudsey, via www.bbc.co.uk/Pudsey. Runners, who must be at least 4ft tall, receive a free bib with race number, Gung-Ho! t-shirt and headband, while any spectators can attend for free.

Tickets and more information are available at www.begung-ho.co.uk. Check out Gung-Ho! updates by searching ‘Gung-Ho!’ on Facebook and on Twitter, at @begungho. PAGE

Care Of Your Jewellery Over Summer

Ahhh, the British summertime! Whether you are holidaying abroad, or soaking up some sun in the UK we have a few tips to make sure that your jewellery stays looking its best! It’s worth taking a few minutes to think about which pieces you want to take with you. You may not want to wear it sitting by the pool, but it is nice to feel extra special going out for dinner! However, we always recommend leaving anything special and sentimental in a safe place at home, we’ve heard so many stories from people who have returned from a holiday without their favourite jewellery. At the same time, think about who you are telling that you’re going on holiday. We’ve been seeing more and more homes being targeted for theft while the owners are on holiday, so while it’s nice to share those holiday pictures, it’s often wise to only show them off once you’ve returned. Once you’ve decided what you’re taking you’ll need to think about how! Suitcases can take a real hammering, so make sure all jewellery is protected and wrapped up securely. Once you’re there it’s easy to let the carefree days and nights take their toll on your jewellery. Sunscreen, perfumes and even sweat can have major effects on silver jewellery, so we recommend waiting a while after applying anything before popping your jewellery on. If you do find that your jewellery is getting a little tarnished a buff with a silver cloth should bring it back to its sparking best! Most of all, you’re there to have fun, and let your hair down. So, think colour, think bold jewellery and have a great time!!

Nibbles &Tipples July Article By Cheryl Cade

HomeBrew and home cooking I have a job in my house, it’s very important, on bottling day I have to make sure the fermenting vessel does not fall on my husband’s head whilst it is tipped. Right now, any person who lives with a home brewer is nodding. Our reward? Drinking the results. I still remember the boots kits that boiled on the stove, then sat in their plastic buckets to bubble away, until the day of bottling then ultimately taste. Sometimes these would work other times, well least said.

Times have changed, these days home brew can be via kits that are well made e.g Muntons or if you feel more adventurous Whole Grain. Along with these changes so has the quality, recently I have been judging Homebrewed beers for 2

competitions and I can’t lie.... some of them where better than the beers I find down my local! This does not mean that home-brewers don’t go to the pub, far from it! They have to do a lot of ‘research’, that’s what my husband calls it. So, what should you do if you feel like brewing your own beer?

There are a number of local groups, Artisan Craft brewers, meet in BrewDog (Norwich) 1st Tuesday of the month. Norwich Brewing club meets on the 3rd Monday (see their Facebook page) and then the Anglian Craft Brewers (ACB groupspaces.com/AnglianCraftBrewers) meet around the county on various dates.

They all hold their meetings in pubs, as they are keen to follow trends and experience new beers and continue their ‘RESEARCH’.

Homebrew Starter Kit

If you are ready though there are a number of competitions in the area too, Craft Beer Week with BrewDog are holding one in August. ACB are holding competition with Norwich and Norfolk CAMRA to find 3 beers to be brewed for Norwich Beer Festival. Finally, there are even 2 homebrew festivals! The first is held in Colchester with one following in Norwich in September.

Currently I am having a ‘discussion’ with my waist line, because of this fried food, curries out and even cheese are on a strict allowance or greeted with the vampire's cross. This impacts on where and what I chose to eat, so it was hearting to find that on visiting the Angel Gardens (Angel Road), not only did he have a range of fish dishes that did not have to come with chips or sauce, he was happy to change the dish so I could allow a cheeky half of Oakham to accompany it without being racked with guilt. I had though only expected one Skate wing, the only thing missing from this was the head. It was grilled to perfection as were the tomatoes.

I know that this is not the only place that is prepared to change dishes to suit their customer, yet I find it is the independent place that is more responsive to these requirements. Places that serve cheap quick food, where the only thing needed is a microwave and a hygiene certificate do not have the flexibility that the home cooking outlet has. So, this summer support your independent, restaurant, pub or cafe.

PRINTING IN NORWICH

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 51 2017

Printing Comes To Norwich Article by Dan Keeble Nearly a century after Caxton introduced the printing press to the world, few outside of London had access to the printed word. This would have been the case in East Anglia, where only the wealthy had the opportunity to read. Then, four hundred and fifty years ago in 1567 a Dutch immigrant, fleeing religious persecution, came to our shores. Anthony de Solempne brought with him his wife and two children, but also set up the first printing press in Norwich. Philip II of Spain feared the growth of Calvinism as a threat to his control over the occupied country. The Duke of Alva, the governor general of The Netherlands, with an army of 10,000 men were tasked by Philip to rid the country of the Protestants. The mobilisation of the army caused Anthony, along with thousands, to flee

the threat of execution by the Blood Council. Many sought refuge in Germany and Britain. Their superior skills in the production of textiles made them welcome settlers here, particularly as our textile industry was in crisis at the time. Queen Elizabeth I, an enemy of Catholic Spain, was eager to show compassion and support for the persecuted Protestant Dutch weavers, many of whom settled in Norwich at the invitation of her ministers. Anthony, came from the province of Brabant and had been a wealthy spice merchant. It is thought that he was also part of an underground anti-Spanish network of printers producing propaganda in Emden Saxony, close to the Dutch border. From his Norwich press, Anthony began printing religious works initially for the Dutch community and the Dutch Reformed

Anthony was well respected by the Dutch and Flemish inhabitants of Norwich who settled mainly in Ultra Aquam (Norwich over the water) - the poor area of city, situated North of the river Wensum. Because of their strange customs and appearances, they were known as the Strangers. Despite their successful integration into the Norwich community, some antiimmigrant sentiment arose. Having welcomed the Strangers because of their desperately needed superior skills in textile production, Queen Elizabeth was facing the challenge of xenophobia arising from the growth of immigration in some areas of the country. But she was determined to quash any dissent.

Church; later printing books of psalms in English. He was a prominent figure in the area, and was commissioned by the Norwich authority to print bye-laws. By 1570, being the first practitioner of the print trade, Anthony was allowed to purchase his citizenship. His grant of citizenship recorded his trades as printer and wine merchant. There existed severe restrictions pertaining to printing which was covered by the Royal Charter of the Stationers' Company granted in 1557. This was to safeguard both Church and the Crown against the publishing of heretical or treasonable propaganda on pain of death. And for commercial gain it also ensured a monopoly in the industry. Printers were required to be registered and accept control and censorship of their printed works. Anthony de Solempne appears to have evaded membership of the Stationers' Company. Perhaps because his printing was acknowledged by the authorities of the city he was allowed to carry on his business unimpeded. His non-compliance however did come to the attention of the Bishop of London, which resulted in his later printed works bearing the note, Seane and Allowyd, indicating it had been sanctioned by the ecclesiastical authority.

In 1570 a group of local men attempted to create an uprising against the Strangers to drive them out. The conspirators were betrayed and their leaders hanged in Norwich on 30th August 1570. One of the condemned, Thomas Brooke, wrote a ballad while awaiting execution, lamenting his fate and entrusting his soul to his Maker. It is ironic that these last words were then published as a broadsheet by Anthony de Solempne, one of the Strangers that Thomas Brooke had sought to eradicate. By 1582 the Strangers of Norwich made up a third of the population, even though the plague of 1578 had wiped out almost 2500. Popular among the Strangers was the breeding of canaries - a practice they brought from their homeland. And it is said that the name and emblem of the Canaries - Norwich City F.C has its roots in the practice. Anthony de Solempne only appears to have continued his printing trade in Norwich until 1572. Few of his publications survive. There is however a copy of Thomas Brooke's ballad held in the Bodleian Library. And a plaque located in Dove Street commemorates the contribution Anthony de Solempne made to bringing the printed word to Norwich. PAGE

MAKE RETIREMENT A...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 51 2017

Make Retirement A Positive Experience The recent announcement by the Duke of Edinburgh, saying he is due to step back from public engagements, has prompted discussion amongst those of us who may be thinking about retirement. When we're young retirement can seem like an elusive concept, associated with old age, grandparents snoozing in their arm chairs and hours of daytime TV. The reality is that people are fitter than ever before, have more drive and determination and are using their retirement in exciting and innovative ways. It's often a time to catch up on the things that could not be done in earlier years. Let's look at some ways to retirement a positive experience:

make

• Financial

planning is crucial. People historically saved for their retirement through private or company pension schemes, but many of those schemes have proven to be

less than satisfactory. An increasing number of older people are supplementing their retirement income through part-time work. This can provide unexpected benefits; new interests, motivation and challenges, a regular routine that needs to be followed, the requirement to take care of one's appearance and the potential to make new friends in a more relaxing environment than was previously provided by a career driven job.

• Down-sizing one's home can be an important consideration. Many retirement apartments provide a way to maintain independent living whilst combining close proximity to other like-minded people. If family have left home down-sizing can be a good way to reduce overheads and perhaps release some capital. It's often a good idea to move whilst still fit and active as this is the best time to get to know new neighbours, form relationships and friendships and become an active member of the community.

MAKE RETIREMENT A...

Issue 51 2017

Retirement apartments often include access to support should health-related issues or a change in one's domestic circumstances at some point occur. Also, they usually offer a calendar of regular social activities and a guest bedroom which can be booked for a nominal fee when overnight visitors come to stay.

• Commit

to staying healthy and looking attractive. Feeling confident in one's appearance helps keep a positive, upbeat attitude alive. Exercise regularly and be invested in a good approach towards diet, sleep and wellbeing. Dress smartly, remain in touch with what's in fashion, the different trends, colours and make-up. It's important to update one's look from time to time or else it can feel dated and stale. Wearing smart, appropriate, fashionable clothing keeps a person looking good, standing taller and improves personal confidence.

Making a regular weekly commitment keeps you coming back and means that people become familiar faces. This is a relaxed way of making new introductions whilst doing things in a supportive environment. Over time these activities could be extended into friendlier relationships by suggesting a coffee or going out for lunch.

• Be

proactive. If there is nothing on offer in your vicinity why not set up a few activities that appeal. Rally a few friends and neighbours into a short walk once a week, coffee at each other's houses, a book club or games night. These ideas have been known to blossom into eagerly anticipated, regular occurrences. All it takes is one person with a little drive and enthusiasm to start the ball rolling.

• Consider

learning. Was there a subject that you were really interested in but never had the chance to study? My mother took up whist, tai chi, Egyptology and learned to play bridge, all at 81. Retirement can provide the opportunity to take up subjects that are of interest, and the beauty is that you don't need to take any exams unless you want to!

• Keep

up to date with popular culture. Pay attention to the news, the latest technology, listen to modern music, maybe even watch some of the popular television shows that everyone is talking about. Keep an interest in present-day life, even if you don't actively follow every gimmick. This simple activity maintains an engagement with modern life and helps you avoid feeling left behind.

• Social

activities are aplenty for retirees and are often reasonably priced. Local Councils provide exercise classes, swimming, walking groups, table tennis, with refreshments and time for conversation often included.

Every age in life has its advantages and disadvantages. Ensuring that retirement is a positive experience requires a little planning and taking care of one's health and finances. But by being receptive to opportunities and invitations that come along you can enjoy a positive, interested mind-set with the potential for many satisfying and fulfilling relationships and activities to be introduced and enjoyed.

2018 Honda Civic Type-R By motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay. Follow Tim @carwriteups rom its styling to its brain churning performance, the 2018 Honda Civic Type R is now an out-and-out supercar. Yes, it’s a hot-hatch, but it is the most desirable one out there - in terms of looks, image and clout. The latest version I tested in Germany - on road and track - just blows you away. The rear spoiler seems the size of an aeroplane wing – and the car is so hunkered down to the tarmac, you swear it’s sucking up asphalt for breakfast. The underpinnings of the 2018 Type R are all box fresh. It's lower, wider and longer - and it sits on a platform that is even stiffer than the departing model. The six-speed bolt action rifle-like manual gearbox is the same as before, but the powerplant’s muscle has been hiked from 310ps to 320ps.

Now, it might seem odd, but the car has been furnished with a comfort button on top of the Sport and +R settings. This is to give you some relief from the stiff suspension and growling alpha-male-esque drive. But if you’re like me, you’ll want to hoon around all day in testosterone dripping +R mode. Sport is awesome, but +R is the one when you’re either on track or in a ‘racer’ mood. Just be careful of your licence here in the UK, though. Out in Germany I got 258kph (160mph) on the unrestricted sections of autobahn. And on track at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, near Klettwitz, I was too scared to look at the speedo. But whether you’re on track or tarmac, the newest Type R astounds with its cornering ability and sheer refusal to become unstuck from the road. It inspires masses of confidence

and makes you push yourself to limits you didn’t know you could get to. So, what does it truly feel like to drive? Well, when diving into a bend, the brakes shave speed off in an instant. The Type R never rolls and under no circumstances does it get disturbed by potholes or changes in the road surface. As I say, it is awesomely reassuring to pilot. The front wheel drive car’s steering is pin-sharp and by no means feels skittish, so you can tilt the Civic into turns eagerly. The feedback is spot on, so it’s easy to measure the amount of useable traction left on the tyres. The Type R doesn’t sound as beast-like as you might imagine, but the low rumble is enough to satisfy, and the sweet free-revving feel of the powerplant just tops it all off. Another plus is that manual gearbox. The six cogs are precise and engaging when asked to change up or down - making you feel like a racing driver, whether you’re on track or not.

There’s a ‘normal’ Honda Civic Type R and a GT variety, which costs a couple of grand more. We drove the latter, and reckon the extra money is worth it. You get extras that include: LED front fog lights, an infotainment unit with sat-nav and an upgraded sound system. Overall, the 2018 Type R is a car that you will relish driving - and never get sick of. I was genuinely gutted to only have two days with the PAGE

Nokia 3310 Nostalgia reborn for the smartphone generation Ask anybody which mobile phone they owned at the beginning of the 21st Century, you could pretty much guarantee that the answer would be the Nokia 3310, a handset which was considered a turning point in the mobile phone industry, where a company brought a product to the market aimed squarely at the masses. A phone that was durable, functional, had an outstanding standby time of 10 days and was fun! Yes, the 3310 rocked 4 games, fun ringtones and Xpress on covers in a vast array of colours and designs. The Nokia 3310 had something for everyone in the days when the iPhone was merely a twinkle in Apple’s eye. After selling over 126,000,000 units, it went on to be replaced by much more feature rich

alternatives and eventually the keyboard was dropped entirely to be replaced by touch screen smart phones that we see today. Now, almost seventeen years later, the Nokia 3310 has returned. The black and white five-line display has been replaced by a 2.4 inch TFT colour display, it now supports a MicroSD, has a camera and can play MP3 music either through its speaker or included headphones. Ringtones are no longer Monophonic, but now boast polyphonic and MP3 support. It’s also quite a bit smaller and lighter that the original 3310 and doesn’t feel quite so durable. It still rocks very impressive talk and standby time which would make most smartphone owners green with envy, in fact whilst iPhone and Android users will be recharging their devices late in the evening, Nokia 3310 owners

Opera web browser, but don’t expect anything more than the most basic surfing experience and email is only available if your provider supports it.

Don’t get too excited if you are expecting to get all the super features of your touchscreen phone. No, this is aimed squarely at the budget marketplace. You won’t find Wi-Fi or GPS support and the available apps are limited to say the least (although fans of the original 3310 will be delighted to find ‘Snake’ has returned in its more advanced full colour glory! The phone also has a inbuilt camera for both stills and video, you will need to plug in a MicroSD card to use these features and the camera will only capture 2MP images on a pretty basic sensor. Internet is available, but only ‘Edge’ speeds, however, you simply don’t need 3G or 4G speeds these networks allow because the technology of the phone doesn’t make use of it. Limited web and social network functionality like Facebook can be found using the included

With all this said, the Nokia 3310 isn’t looking to replace the touchscreen smartphone industry, but what it does do, goes some way to adding a bit of ‘cool’ to the low-cost entry level phone market. It’s a welcome cheaper alternative to excessively expensive smartphones and it really looks the part. Nokia is now in the hands of Finnish startup HMD, a company formed specially to take on the mantle of one of the most legendary names in the mobile phone industry. The 3310 forms one of four new handsets announced this year, the others more ‘traditional’ Android powered smartphones. You can pick up a Nokia 3310 in four bright colours for around £49 to buy the phone outright. Add a low cost ‘Sim Only’ contract of an even lower cost Pay and Go sim and you are away.

Twitter An Update For The Better? Well as you’re all probably aware by now Twitter recently had an overhaul of it’s interface across all platforms to make it less cluttered for the user. So, I’d thought I’d take a little time to just delve into what they’ve done. While a few of these changes made their way to the Android version of the app a while ago for this article I’ll focus on the changes to the iOS version.

The first, most obvious change is that your profile image has gone from a square graphic to a circular one - so some of you might need to tweak your existing square profile photo ensuring that your key imagery/message is within the visible circular area! This isn’t going to be a good move for those users that use text or QR codes for their profile image.

PAGE

32

Twitter: @icenimagazine

Twitter has also added a new side navigation menu tidying up all your account(s), lists, moments, settings and privacy into one place! While Android had the change a while back this is the first time it’s been seen on iOS. To access this either just tap your profile icon in the top left corner or swipe right to reveal the side menu options.

In the bottom left corner of this new menu is the ‘moon’ icon, tap this to toggle from daylight to night settings. Handy if you don’t want to draw attention to yourself checking your feed in a darkened environment! In the bottom right corner is the QR code generator/scanner (it’s been about for a while now but was hidden away rather too

SOCIAL MEDIA Issue 51 2017

well). Essentially it allows you to generate and save/share your own unique Twitter QR code which once scanned will automatically take a user to your Twitter account, or allows you to scan another users QR code. I’ll leave you to consider if/how you’d want to use this. To save your own unique QR code just tap your QR code to reveal the save, tweet or share options. If you manage more than one Twitter account these are now also available to access quickly from the same side menu. Your current account will be displayed on the top left with other accounts displayed in smaller circular profile images in the top right - if you have more than 3 you’ll also see the 3 dots ‘more’ menu to allow you to toggle between the rest and also create or add another account. The Twitter blue & white trademark colour scheme has also been retired in favour of a more monochrome clean line/icon based design. This is particularly noticeable with the ‘interaction’ icons under each tweet. The reply ‘arrow’ has been removed in favour of a more obvious speech balloon and the other icons seeing a slight graphical tweak making them thinner in appearance. In addition to this the reply, retweet, and like counts in conversations are now ‘live’ on mobile apps and the compose icon has changed to a ‘quill’ icon.

As with any updates there’s going to be those that like the changes and those that don’t but there’s no going back so however you feel about the changes you’ll have to embrace them eventually. To be fair these are fairly cosmetic changes and having used them for a while I personally think it’s a refreshingly clean layout and a step in the right direction but it would have been nice to see Twitter address some of the more weightier issues like better spam controls and the most requested feature - an editing function for posted tweets. So there you have it - my rundown of the new Twitter changes. The Diary of a Norfolk Family. By Mark King Above: Mark King The school summer holidays are fast approaching although for people with children at university the holidays have already started. It’s also the time of year when the family diary fills very quickly with children related activities. From sports day to summer fetes, end of year shows, assemblies and awards presentations, and then all those various after school clubs holding their grand final events. It is a welcome break for the modern parent not having to trudge out all evening running the little ones from one venue to another, or having to quickly change work plans so, you can make that show your little one has been practising for weeks, but the school only invited the parents four day before! It’s only a small gripe because at the end of the day teachers deserve their extended holiday breaks. People sometimes mock the amount of holiday time teachers enjoy, but I don’t. Just having half a dozen of my children’s friends around for the afternoon for birthday parties have left the wife and I exhausted, and that’s normally after the grandparents have helped out too. I can then well imagine how drawn the average teacher must feel after having to take care of not just the educational needs of thirty children for the whole day, but also their physical and mental wellbeing! They deserve the break and so do all the unpaid volunteers that freely give up their spare time to help out with after school clubs. These people deserve a big thank you from us parents, and their break too. Although for my boy's football team coaches the training sessions are carrying on throughout summer, and there’s summer competitions as well. So through rainy, sleety and windy winters to blazing hot long drawn out days of the summer, James Duggan and Mark Jones the Hillside Rover’s under 9s coaches are there with the lads, and to these two individuals I give my biggest thanks. People like Jim and Mark are not just an inspiration to our children, but to us adults too. Well done. www.always-hanging-around.blogspot.com Follow on twitter: @author_king PAGE

I was talking with a friend recently and she asked me if I had ever been to Birmingham. I started to reply no, but then I remembered I did once visit, albeit for a brief time, and I really shouldn't forget it as it was possibly the most Above: Keri Beevis embarrassing time in my life. Let me set the scene. I was seventeen, just a few weeks shy of my eighteenth birthday and my best friend and I were off on holiday to Scotland. We had decided to travel by bus, which involved a nice scenic (I use the word 'scenic' in the loosest possible term) journey all over the country before we reached our destination. We also had to change buses in Birmingham, which meant a two-hour transfer. Deciding to make the most of our brief visit to Birmingham, we headed off, suitcases dragging behind us, to find the nearest pub. Once inside, we ordered drinks then settled down for a girly chat about our plans to party once we hit Scotland. Five minutes. Yes, five minutes. That is how long it took for me to attract the attentions of the local drunk. There we sat minding our own business as he ambled up and started hitting on me. I tried my best to ignore him, but my friend found the situation hilarious, which only seemed to encourage him. After twenty minutes of putting up with his advances I suggested to her that we head back to the bus station. Big mistake. The rat-faced Romeo decided Twitter: @icenimagazine

to follow us and spent the next hour serenading me and declaring his undying love for me, while I just desperately wanted the ground to swallow me up. There was a moment of relief when our bus arrived. Explaining my predicament to the driver he allowed my friend and I to board early, thwarting the drunk's attempts to also board the bus. Now here's where things got really embarrassing, as it was clear he wasn't giving up without a fight, and he started pestering the other passengers who were trying to board, telling them we were engaged to be married and the bus driver was stopping us from being together. Eventually we were ready to go, my drunken pursuer still trying to board the bus. By this time he was shouting and crying and the other passengers were giving me odd looks. The driver started the engine, I let out a deep breath of relief, then Romeo declared he couldn't live without me and threw himself on the road in front of the bus. I was mortified as the other passengers glared at me and my friend in the seat beside me was in fits of giggles. It took two members of staff to physically lift him out of the way so we could continue with our journey and I had to endure several more embarrassing hours with my fellow passengers, who were not impressed. Birmingham: I am sure you are lovely, but I won't ever be back.

THE DAD NETWORK

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 51 2017

The Dad Network Article by Tom at: seewhatmummysays.com Traditionally, we’re used to local village halls, community centres and even some public houses offering mother and baby sessions, but this is 2017 and there’s a new group in town. 'The Dad Network' is a national collection of county wide groups, initiated by AJ Ferguson. Norfolk's network began life at the end of 2016 and is already the largest of the Dad Network communities in the country, attracting nearly 400 members to the Facebook group. The group is run by three admins, or 'Dadmins' as they prefer to be called, Paul, Isaac and Nathan. One of the biggest challenges for any father is facing the feeling of isolation. A lot of emphasis is put on mum and baby, and rightly so of course...but we mustn't forget the dads. As part of the group you have the opportunity to interact as much or as little as you like, often learning that you’re not the first to have experienced a particular situation. Made up of doting dads, stepdads and dads to be, the group provides support, solace and encouragement. The network is completely non-profit, and Nathan tells us the 'Dadmins' simply do it to 'bring dads together' and to give others the opportunity to 'make new friends, and appreciate that they’re not alone'.

Farm, the Dinosaur Adventure Park is the next event in the diary. Also in the diary for 2017 are High Lodge at Thetford Forest, Tots Town, and Bewilderwood to name just a few. In addition to the events that you can enjoy with your little ones, there is also a chance to relax without the children, occasionally joining the group for a few drinks or taking part in the networks 5-a-side football league. I’ve been assured this is for all abilities! There is rumoured to be a national 5-a-side tournament on the horizon between all of the Dad Network counties. Monthly meet ups with the children allow them to also interact with friends away from childcare or school, to ensure they get as much out of the group as the dads. The online interaction can often be light hearted, but the 'Dadmins' ensure that the important bits are covered too, having recently organised a successful baby and infant first aid evening. I recently joined the network and was shocked at how quickly I was approved and welcomed into the group, and not just by the admin team. My welcome was quickly followed by an invite to an event. I already feel like a valued member. I would urge other dads or dads to be to give it a try. There are no expectations or obligations to fulfil, just like-minded people making the most out of being daddies.

There are no monthly fees or hidden costs. Each member simply pays their own admission cost to each event, often successfully negotiating group discounts. So, what does the future hold for Norfolk's Dad Network? Having already run popular outings to Hulabaloos and Melsop

North West Norfolk Social Media Surgery

Meets last Wednesday of each month, 10am - 12pm at Thornham Village Hall. Each meeting includes a focussed, in depth social media learning session, an update on the latest developments in social media, a question and answer session, and an opportunity for you to network with other local businesses. July’s North West Norfolk Social Media Surgery will look at how to optimise your social media profile, including what to put into your ‘bio’ or ‘about’ section in order to make it compelling and increase the chances of appearing in search results. Many business owners make one common mistake when it comes to their social media marketing efforts: they fail to optimise their social media accounts. A Celebration Of The Career Of A Rock Icon SOME GUYS HAVE ALL THE LUCK - July 11, 2017 From street busker to international superstar and now verging on becoming a national treasure – Rod Stewart has swaggered, charmed and crooned his way through 46 years of a versatile and enduring rock career. Last year, his UK tour brought him to Norwich’s Carrow Road stadium and it also saw the tribute stage show Some Guys Have All The Luck grace the Theatre Royal stage for the first time. A pure celebration of all things Rod Stewart, the theatrical production now returns to the theatre on July 11 with Paul Metcalfe at the mic, singing all of Rod’s greatest hits, from Maggie May, which was written 46 years ago, to other more recent favourites. Paul delivers an authentic and charismatic performance, displaying the distinctive vocals and swaggering showmanship that has made Rod one of the most loved performers of all time, while packing in all the massive hits from his incredible back catalogue. Paul said: “Rod Stewart’s life has been graced with significant strokes of luck along the way and I’ve picked out some of these as key moments in the new show. Rod has made the most of this luck combining it with hard graft and talent and I feel as lucky to be performing his current songs as much as the classics like Maggie May.” The show features songs from Rod Stewart’s time with The Faces as well as classic hits including Maggie May, Baby Jane, Do Ya Think I’m Sexy, Sailing and You’re in My Heart, Tonight’s The Night and timeless Motown tunes from the album Songbook.

Birmingham Stage Company, who have brought Horrible Histories and some classic Roald Dahl books to life in theatres, are turning their attention to David Walliams’ best-selling novel Gangsta Granny. Running from July 13-15, it tells the story of Ben who spends his Friday nights staying with his grandmother. Alice Back In Wonderland - July 26-29 Norwich Theatre Royal Youth Company Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and its sequel Through The Looking Glass are amongst the best-loved of children’s stories - and now audiences can see how the heroine’s life panned out as Norwich Theatre Royal’s Youth Theatre summer musical revisits the scene of her adventures. Alice Back In Wonderland is the creative work of the Theatre Arts Courses director

David Lambert and follows on from successful productions in recent years such as High School Prom Queen, Peter Pan Return To Neverland and The Wind in the Willows. David said: “I chose the Alice story because it’s such a classic and it was the 150th anniversary of the publishing of Alice in 2015. It’s a great story and I thought of a sequel of what happens when Alice is a little bit older. I have twisted

The Youth Company has done five productions at Stage Two this year while the Junior Classes have done class work and workshops, performances and presentations over the course of the academic year. Now it all comes together and we have the summer show and it’s on stage at the Theatre Royal which is a huge experience for the young people involved.”

Listing: Alice Back In Wonderland, Wednesday 26-Saturday 29 July, at 7pm, and Saturday matinee at 2pm. Tickets £7-£12.

A small group of youth theatre students took part in a day of brainstorming with David to come up with the base plot line, which he then took away and spent eight weeks on, writing the script, lyrics and music. Now everyone is in rehearsals getting ready to present the show on the Theatre Royal’s main stage from July 26 to 29. The story starts off in Oxford where Alice (played by Matilda Bailes) is now unsure whether her adventures in Wonderland were real or were they only a dream? But then suddenly the White Rabbit (Sam Ings) reappears and tells her that Wonderland needs her once again. So its’s back to Wonderland and encounters with all the favourite characters from the Red Queen (Lauren Bryant), the March Hare (Isaac Wright), the Dormouse (Heather Kelly), the Mad Hatter (Ali Hunt) and the Caterpillar (Kieran Crawford), to the Cheshire Cat (Octavia Sharman), and Tweedledum (Callum Adkins) and Tweedledee (Jamie Cleminson). Uplifting Literary Classic Gets New Life In Touring Stage Production

The Railway Children – July 31-August 5 A classic tale loved by millions of bookworms and recreated in an iconic Seventies movie is getting a new lease of life on stage. The Railway Children is being brought to life in a thrilling new production at Norwich Theatre Royal from July 31 to August 5. Originally written by E Nesbit, it tells the story of Roberta, Peter and Phyllis whose lives are turned upside down when their father mysteriously disappears with two strangers. It means they have to leave their lavish London life for a simpler existence in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside.

Cue some new friendships and the discovery of a secret which will change their lives forever. Although a best-selling book, the story also entertained generations of young people and their families thanks to the iconic 1970s movie starring Jenny Agutter and Bernard Cribbins. Now a new generation of actors are set to bring The Railway Children to life with the help of some beautiful period costumes and ingenious designs. Taking on the role of station-master Perks is Stewart Wright who is a hugely experienced actor and writer. He made his name in the mockumentary series People Like Us before

taking a break from TV to create his own work. Stewart then returned to the small-screen spotlight in the ITV hit Love and Marriage opposite Alison Steadman and Duncan Preston. Mother is played by Joy Brook who has a long stage and TV career with previous roles including DC Kerry Holmes in long-running crime drama The Bill and Joanne Pearson in ITV’s popular prime-time hit Peak Practice, while Phyllis is played by Katherine Carlton who made her professional stage debut in Much Ado About Nothing at the Old Vic opposite Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones. Others in the cast include former Leicester City youth team footballer turned actor Andrew Joshi who plays Father and Doctor, versatile stage and TV actor Neil Salvage, Will Richards who has appeared in the likes of Holby City and Endeavour, and Richard Brindley who is no stranger to Norfolk having starred in the popular festive Christmas show at Thursford. Paul Jepson, who is directing The Railway Children, says it will resonate with all ages. He said: “The script is loved because we all have that warmth and connection to the story. I think the reason is that it is all about transition and it is also very well-mannered. It is about loss and

pain and the ability to transcend them, and that is why people love it so much. “I also think it resonates because people are having a rough old time at the moment. If you are not sitting in London and earning a lot of money, times can be tough. At the moment, a lot of people are not having a great time and I think people will relate to that fact at the beginning of the story. I also think there is an implication about the romance of a train taking you away somewhere for a better time is also important. In a nice and non-heavy way, The Railway Children is exciting.” Listing: The Railway Children, Monday 31 JulySaturday 5 August at 7.30pm, and Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. Tickets £7£21. Discounts for Friends, Corporate Club, Over-60s, Under-18s and Groups. Signed and audio-described performance on Saturday 5 August at 2.30pm.
