Issue 73 2019

The Benjamin Foundation 2019 marks the 25th anniversary of The Benjamin Foundation. Our charity helps people across Norfolk and Suffolk to deal with some of the challenges that life throws at them. Whether it’s the prevention of youth homelessness, helping families to build stronger relationships or providing positive activities for young people with limited opportunities in life, our work brings hope, opportunity, stability and independence to the people we support.

Butterflies Emotional Wellbeing Service was launched in 2018 to provide emotional wellbeing sessions in local communities for young people aged 5 to 18, which are paid for by the parent or carer. It aims to strengthen their emotional and social wellbeing, increase their self-esteem and help them to recognise their greatness to enable them to be better able to deal with the ups and downs of life. Reasons for referral are usually very varied, but may include general self-esteem issues, anxiety, friendship issues, bereavement, and family relationship breakdown. By helping at an early stage, our work aims to prevent more serious problems arising in the future.

Claire’s* son has recently used the service. “It’s been invaluable and Sam* has benefited in more ways than he or I could have ever imagined. He has a tricky home life as his sister has poor mental health, which has had a negative impact on Sam’s own wellbeing,” Claire explains. Our Support Workers are experienced at working with different ages of children and supporting their emotional wellbeing by using a range of activities.

Claire continues: “Since seeing Bob (Support Worker), Sam has become more able to open up and talk about his feelings; he no longer keeps things bottled up. His self-esteem has improved and his sense of humour has returned. It’s so lovely seeing flashes of the old Sam. Life will never be easy, but he knows he has a regular time to check-in with Bob and can just be himself. Thank you all so much for showing Sam there is hope and life can be good again.” *Names have been changed

In September, Tangomotion (Sat 21 Sept) promise an evening of raw and intoxicating Tango (you might recognise them from Strictly Come Dancing). Theatre and dance combine in Come Dance With Me (Sat 28 Sept) a warmhearted family saga told through the romance of ballroom dancing. As always, there’s plenty of comedy lined up throughout the summer: Edinburgh Comedy Award Winner Adam Riches (Fri 3 May) promises a unique evening of off-the-wall comedy. Shappi Khorsandi (Wed 8 & Thur 9 May) shares confessions from a life of comedy (and a brief stint in the jungle), whilst The Vicar of Dibley co-writer Paul Mayhew-Archer (Fri 10 May) performs his debut stand-up show on Parkinsons and the therapeutic power of laughter. Danish comedian Sofie Hagen (Fri 7 Jun) combines comedy with a reading from her first book. Just Like That! The Tommy Cooper Show (Wed 12 Jun) captures the magic of the comic genius, and we recommend getting in the mood for Norwich Pride with Suzi Ruffell (Sat 13 Jul). Following a February sell-out Dad’s Army Radio Show (Wed 24 Jul) return, exMP and QI star Gyles Brandreth (Fri 26 & Sat 27 Jul) is back on the stage, and Ruby Wax (Thur 5 & Fri 6 Sept) explains how to be human.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show

They’ve both taken the states by storm, and now they’re back in Blighty; The Tape Face Show (Mon 16 - Wed 18 Sept) and Paul Zerdin (Tue 1 & Wed 2 Oct) are sure to delight Norwich audiences with their respective miming and ventriloquism. Historian and bestselling author Ben Macintyre (Wed 5 Jun) shares the thrilling true-life story of Cold War agent Oleg Gordievsky, in a discussion based around his latest book The Spy and the Traitor. Journalist Caitlin Moran (Wed 10 Jul) promises a hilarious and thought-provoking evening of feminism, fame, and fiction. For the younger generation, the classic fairytale Ugly Duckling is transformed with a heartwarming reimagining in Honk! The Musical (Sat 4 & Sun 5 May). Acrobatic chaos for kids comes to Norwich with Chores (Sat 8 & Sun 9 Jun), the story of two rascally brothers and their attempts to absolutely, definitely tidy their rooms. Picture book favourite The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show (Wed 3 - Sun 7 Jul) is crawling into the Playhouse, with some other of Eric Carle’s other brilliant characters for

company, including 10 Little Rubber Ducks and Brown Bear. It wouldn’t be a Playhouse season without some fabulous cabaret! Godfathers of alternative cabaret The Tiger Lillies (Sat 15 Jun) return to the Playhouse with a very special show celebrating their 30th anniversary, and jaded faded drag star Miss Hope Springs (Fri 12 Jul) sings fabulous comedy melodies in sequins. Cult sensation Bourgeois & Maurice (Fri 27 Sept) are back again, and diving deeper into their demented universe of hyper glamour and black comedy. Theatre and music combines in Electrolyte (Fri 14 Jun) a multi-award winning piece of gigtheatre exploring mental health, which comes to the Playhouse in time for Norfolk Creativity and Wellbeing Week. We’re also welcoming Welsh National Opera to Norwich for the first time in almost fifty years with a very contemporary production of Don Pasquale (Thur 20 & Sat 22 Jun). This riotous new version of the classic includes a kebab van on stage, and has been described as Gavin and Stacey do opera! For more traditional music, The Classical Duo Hayley Moss & Benjamin Lake (Thur 27 Jun) who made their name busking on the streets of Norwich, return with their popular ballards and classic repertoire. The Spooky Men’s Chorale (Tue 9 Jul) combine humour, improbable facial hair, and sonorous tunes for an evening not to be forgotten.

Gyles Brandreth

The Floyd Effect (Sat 31 Aug) return after a sold-out performance in 2018 for another evening of the Pink Floyd canon (and lasers). Featuring actual former Kinks, The Kast Off Kinks (Thur 12 Sept) play all the classics, whilst The Bob Dylan Story (Fri 20 Sept) celebrates the 50th anniversary of Dylan’s famous Isle of Wight comeback show with an aural and visual feast. Norwich favourite Karl Minns (Thur 18 Sat 20 Jul) brings his sort of stand-up, sort of biography back to the Playhouse. An Evening of Jazz and Cabaret (Sun 15 Sept) is back for the 17th year of fundraising, and satirical comedy The Screwtape Letters (Thur 26 Sept), adapts CS Lewis’ classic book for the stage. The team at Tiger Eye are inviting local businesses to ‘take a walk on the wild side’ and join them in raising funds for The Benjamin Foundation through ‘netwalking’ across the Norfolk Coast, from Hunstanton to Cromer. networking event that’s just as diverse as the range of clientele their business works with. As winners of a Gold Accreditation at the Best Employer Eastern Region awards 2018, Tiger Eye recognised that physical exercise and teambuilding were important for their employees’ wellbeing and decided that the walk would be a great way to promote mental and physical health within their own team, as well as the local community. With community engagement in mind, Tiger Eye decided that all the proceeds from Tiger Trek will be donated to The Benjamin Foundation, who carry out vital work in the community, helping children and young adults deal with many of the challenges that life throws at them. Tiger Trek will feature as part of a number of events and fundraising activities that are being carried out this year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the charity. As well as offering accommodation centres for homeless young people, the charity also provides help and support to help them get their lives back on track.

David Bullock, Director of Client Services at Tiger Eye, said: “We are delighted to announce this exciting event, continuing our longstanding policy of nurturing employee wellbeing as well as increasing our engagement with the local community. We hope that local businesses will join us in recognising the benefits of Tiger Trek for personal wellbeing and mindfulness, as well as raising vital funds for such an important cause.” “The Norfolk Coast Path is excited to welcome the Tiger Eye Team, and everyone involved in Tiger Trek, for a weekend of sand dunes, salt marsh and sea air. Along the way, we hope that Trekkers can enjoy the great local produce available from the fantastic cafes, pubs and delis that line the path.” - Jack Davidson, Trail Officer for the Norfolk Coast Path. Chris Elliott, Marketing Manager at The Benjamin Foundation, stated: “We are delighted that Tiger Eye staff have chosen to support our charity in 2019, which is our 25th anniversary year. With their three-day walk, they are truly going the extra mile and the funds raised will help us make a positive difference to many more local young people.” For more details or to take part, please visit http://tigereye.eventbrite.co.uk/?s=91030977. The musical was commissioned in 2010 by the RSC. It was written by renowned playwright Denis Kelly, while antipodean comedian, actor and musician Tim Minchin wrote the lyrics and music. RELAX AND TAKE A BREAK

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 73 2019

Relax And Take A Break How often do you relax and take • One reason why so many of us work so hard is to provide a good living for our family a break? Statistics reveal that increasing numbers of us are loath to take time away from work, with some 19 million days of UK holiday entitlement remaining untaken in one year alone. One in five of us work seven extra hours each week of unpaid overtime. And these figures only record those in salaried employment. Business owners and sole traders rarely think about set hours or what time they should be clocking off from work. It may be only when their health starts to suffer, relationships with family and friends are affected or they start to feel resentful and jaded that there's any motivation to change things. Allowing time to relax and take a break is important on many levels. A recent Labour Force Survey discovered that 45% of all working days, 11.7 million last year in total, were lost to stress-related issues. The impact of not relaxing and taking a break can be hugely significant in every area of life.

and make them proud of us. But spending less and less time together, giving increasing importance to clients or customers, or being constantly irritable or distracted may be impacting on the quality of those relationships. Equally, we need to take some time for ourselves, have a break, pursue our hobbies and interests or simply relax and do nothing at all. Taking time to nurture the creative and non-work side of ourselves brings another dimension of satisfaction and fulfillment.

• It's been found that when we do take a break, even for short periods, perhaps for a short stroll or a drink of water, we often return with fresh ideas and insights into problem areas that may have been troubling us. People often say, don't make a hasty decision, sleep on it and see how you feel in the morning. Equally, detaching and taking a break can be beneficial. It allows time for our minds to still, new thoughts and ideas to surface, and for us to take a little time away from the 'coal face'.

RELAX AND TAKE A BREAK

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 73 2019

• Chasing our dreams, challenging • Relax and take a break with family. ourselves and being successful are all well and good. It's important to say 'yes' and step outside our comfort zone sometimes, but it's also relevant to say 'no', and claim time and energy for ourselves too. Including every area of life in our focus matters. Let's consider some helpful ways to relax and take a break.

Learn to have proper conversations, keep upto-date with each other's news, opinions and stories. Share your challenges with them; they're the people closest to you, and let them help. They may be able to ease the pressure in different areas of your life, resulting in better communications and an improved bond.

• If work is usually a mental, cerebral • Consider outsourcing some of your activity, a break can provide the opportunity for alternative activity like physical exercise and time to work and tire those muscles. Sleep-related issues and our quality of sleep can be affected when we're tired mentally, but not physically, or vice versa. If work is largely mental, introduce sport, walks, a round of golf, visit to the gym and maybe add a social element by sharing those times with friends or family.

commitments. You may be able to buy yourself a break by hiring help with domestic chores, like cleaning, ironing or gardening, or by paying someone to do those work-related tasks that are not your forte. Paying the best person to do the job can be money well spent, resulting in a more professional approach, which may even generate new business. Then use your free time well by having an afternoon pleasing yourself.

If you work in mainly a physical capacity, join a quiz night, locate your board games, start doing the crossword or join a book club and find sociable ways to have a break and spend time exercising mentally.

• In the evenings switch off technology

• Sometimes we need to learn to relax gradually, maybe by feeling there's a purpose to it. Volunteering, perhaps for a charity, youth group or community project can introduce something different but also add value to life. We move our focus away from work targets, profit, earning, and, as such, redirect our energy into something with a less businessfocused angle. Doing this provides space to explore new skills, work with a different agenda and meet new people, those with similar interests to ourselves.

and determine not to turn it back on unless there's an emergency situation which needs monitoring. Do relaxing things, like taking a walk, listening to music, reading a book, spending time with those you care about; all investments in those other important areas of your life. Sometimes even decline invitations and occasionally have a night off if you've been over-committed with social engagements. Then use the time to indulge, eat your favourite foods, have a relaxing bath and an early night. Taking personal responsibility for your health and wellbeing, both mental and physical, gives you back control. After all, even airlines say in times of turbulence first put the oxygen mask on your own face. Then you're in a better position to help others.

Article By Susan Leigh Susan Leigh, Altrincham Counsellor and Hypnotherapist, has published her third book, 101 Days of Inspiration #tipoftheday (ISBN 9781910275160) based on her social media series. The Diary of a Norfolk Family By Mark King As I write this article, I’m sitting within the stadium of Norwich City Football Club. There are currently two games to go before the end of the season and the fans do not yet know (although they might by the time this article is published) if the Canaries have achieved automatic Above: Mark King promotion or if they are now slugging their way through the Championship play of system. I’m not here to watch a game though, but here to donate blood. As the wife is also here, but with her appointment thirty five minutes after my one, I decided to bring my laptop and work on my manuscript for my third book in the Daniel Jones series while I waited for her, but instead I’m writing about my experience in giving blood. Today was my thirtyninth pint of blood. So many people tell me when they find out that I donate through the N.H.S Blood and Transplant service, that they would love to do the same, but then never get around to doing it!

There are people from all walks of society turning up to take their turn, from the young to the old, both male and female in equal numbers and all volunteering to give their free pint for the use of some stranger they will never knowingly meet. It takes less than an hour from start to finish and is painless. The staff are always very friendly and, over the last two decades, I’ve got to know them like you would your local friendly postman, or postwoman. When you’re finished, you get to sit down with a wide choice of drinks, biscuits or crisps to enjoy for free; plus, when you leave you have the added satisfaction that, in a world that throws up on a daily basis such bloodshed and misery, you yourself have done something positive and constructive for humanity. So, when you’re next flicking through the internet on your phone, just type in blood.co.uk, take sixty seconds to register with the service, and then make an appointment online at the next local session in your community. Then just turn up. Simple as that! www.always-hanging-around.blogspot.com Follow on twitter: @author_king

Exorcist In The Ceiling My friend, Ness, and I have a history of trying to out prank each other. We’re work colleagues as well as pals and, over the years, there have been many occasions when I have come back from lunch to find the letters Above: Keri Beevis on my keyboard have been rearranged or the wallpaper on my computer desktop changed to something amusing. To be fair, I have pulled my own share of pranks on Ness and my best effort has to be the time I scared the bejesus out of her with an eight-foot green alien when we were exploring an abandoned hospital. I made her scream so loudly as she fled out of the building, I probably deserve fifty pranks in return. Anyway, a couple of days ago, Ness decided it was time to try to even the score. We work in a fairly creepy old office building and one of the ceiling tiles above our shared desk is currently missing. Over the past few days, Ness (whose imagination is as twisted as mine) and I have discussed how the hole would be a great place to hide a body, as well as how creepy it is. I had commented to her that I wouldn’t want to be alone in the office until the tile had been replaced and from that the seed was sown. She starts work before me and, by the time I had arrived, she had climbed on top of the desk and stuck a large photo of the creepy Exorcist girl in the hole with the intention of freaking me out.

Except it didn't quite work out how she had planned, as, unfortunately for her, I am the most unobservant person on the planet. After sitting at my desk all morning, completely oblivious as to what was above my head, my brother (who was in on the joke) emails me. 'Look up, you muppet! I seriously can't believe I'm related to you.' I peered over my computer screen thinking 'what on earth is he on about?' as I glanced gormlessly around the room and, after a couple of minutes, I glanced up at the hole in the ceiling and spotted the face. I immediately burst out laughing though, which wasn’t quite the reaction Ness was hoping for. Still, when our receptionist came up a short while later, we managed to scare the heck out of her. Not a totally wasted prank after all. PAGE

Family Road Trip An 800 mile round trip and over 18 hours travelling in a car with two small children... was it worth it for an Easter weekend away in Cornwall? Absolutely! We had planned a few things to do over our four days away: meet up with family that understandably we rarely see; visit The Meadery for our Saturday night meal and check out St. Michael’s Mount, which features in every Cornwall travel video! At half past five on the Wednesday evening, Becca finished work and we were ready to set off on the first leg of our journey. We had decided to drive half way that evening and stop off in a hotel in Swindon, allowing us to wake up early Thursday and continue on. It's a long way to travel with anyone, but two young children could be more difficult than most. They were a bit uncomfortable, but with comfort breaks and a few carefully selected CDs for the journey, we made it, still talking to each other! We arrived at Tehidy Holiday Park around lunchtime. The in-laws had travelled ahead with their touring caravan and had bought in the most appropriate lunch they could: traditional Cornish pasties!

Tehidy Holiday Park, with several regional winner trophies to its name, is family run site that offers tent and touring caravan pitches alongside static caravans, cottages and glamping! It has a generous-sized park, games room, small on-site shop and toilet/shower facilities: everything you need for a weekend camping whilst retaining its family feel and not being too commercialised. We had the tent set up quickly and decided to head straight out to explore! First on the list was St. Michael’s Mount. Originally in the diary for Saturday, we luckily discovered it's actually closed to the public on Saturdays as it still remains a private residence. I was surprised, having not visited before, that there isn't a huge sea front town present, but a few quaint shops, with the main attraction being St. Michael’s Mount. We couldn't walk across as the tide had started to come in, so had to catch one of the small boats. These run back and forth, so you don't have to wait long, but remember to take change as the boat journeys and car park are cash only! There is a children's pack with activities to complete once inside, which can earn them a medal. Being a little short on time, we didn't

stay too long, but it is definitely worth a visit, and if you're already National Trust members, entry won't cost you anything! Next on the list, and as we weren't far away, was Lands End! You can't really go to Cornwall without visiting! It was close to closing when we arrived, so close in fact that they didn't even charge us to park the cars. However, we weren't really interested in the 4D cinema or shops, rather just visiting the landmark itself... and maybe a picture of the famous sign! It was rather blustery at the very end of the country, so we returned to the campsite to get some rest ahead of another full day! Friday and I'm up early making a cuppa on the small electric stove and thoughtfully offered our neighbours, the in-laws, a drink... forgetting that we hadn't packed milk or sugar, so ended up carrying over a cup of warm black tea for them to finish! We were meeting family today, so we all decided to head to Flambards Amusement Park. Flambards offers lots of rides for all ages, from teacups and dinosaur trains to spinning swinging thrill rides. As the weather was fantastic again, we started outside and only ventured to the indoor attractions later in the day. Indoors includes a Victorian village and Britain in the blitz, both of which we enjoyed more than we had expected. Afterwards, we headed back to the campsite for a big family BBQ, thankfully not cooked on our little two burner stove!

Issue 73 2019

As we now had Saturday free, we squeezed in a visit to a couple more of the family and visited Perranporth beach! More pasties were to be eaten of course, washed down with some local beer at The Tywarnhayle Inn, location of Becca's folks’ first date many years ago! If you visit and it's nice outside, I'd definitely recommend the little beach hut booths in the beer garden! In the evening, we visited The Meadery in Newlyn. It's first come first served, but we didn't mind enjoying a drink downstairs whilst waiting for a table. Everything inside is themed, so there's a lovely atmosphere as you enjoy your chosen tipple, including the famous mead. I'd recommend the "Chicken in the rough" for main, eaten with fingers (as cutlery, not a side order!) Sunday soon came, and it was time for our final day! We squeezed in a carvery with family, a visit to St.Ives on the train enjoying the beach while we were there and finishing the day with some horse riding for the kiddies, courtesy of some very accomodating family, and well behaved horses! Monday had arrived and it was time to leave. With a mammoth nine hour car journey ahead of us, we had lots of time to reflect on our long weekend! Was it tiring? Yes. Was it a long way to travel for a few days? Yes. Should I have packed more clothes suitable for warm weather? Most definitely! Would I go back at the next opportunity? Yes. Time is precious, and time with the family even more so, so if you keep putting off that trip, or you've always wanted to go somewhere... just do it! THE GREEN COLUMN

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 73 2019

Introducing The Green Column I am delighted to have been asked to write a monthly ‘Green’ piece for Iceni magazine. I am passionate about protecting our One Planet Earth and look forward to sharing ideas and stories with you that will hopefully be of interest and inspire some creative thinking and action about how we as a community and individuals, can do more to look after where we live. A little about me… I have been a vegan for nearly 3 and a half years and I am loving all the new and exciting food options that Norfolk offers at such ease now. Even in my short time of being vegan, the market is shifting and I no longer need to panic about getting food out on the go! I am also a keen composter and on a journey (which seems to be a long road) to zero-waste. Each time I go out, my bag is already full with my collapsible cup and pot for food and drink take outs, my cutlery, drinks bottle, napkin and sometimes a stainless steel straw! (More on this in next month’s column). By day, I am a part time teacher and trainee Forest School leader. Being outdoors and in nature is my true home and I am blessed that I get to spend some of my days with energetic and curious children making dens and potions, cooking on campfires and eating together, climbing and hiding, identifying and imagining, observing children creating friendships and community… how fabulous! I enjoy wild swimming, walking and I love to dance and be amongst friends and loved ones talking and sharing.

I look forward to this new challenge of writing for Iceni and until next time… don’t forget to pack your reusable shopping bag and think twice about whether you really need to pack that broccoli in a plastic bag before taking it to the checkout! Sunshine and Spring flowers to you all! Shona PAGE

Vehicle Tracking Gadgets - Part 2

Quartix Vehicle Tracking From Zest Tracking Following on from my previous car gadgets, this month, I’m talking about the Quartix Vehicle Tracker from Zest Tracking.

Quartix Website and, more importantly, install an App onto my Android device to monitor my vehicle in real time. Quartix provide both Android and iPhone compatible apps.

Again, the Quartix Tracker is aimed at companies with fleets of vehicles where detailed usage of cars and vans is a requirement.

I thought the Quartix app was much more ‘friendly’ to use and it showed me intuitively ‘how’ the vehicle was being driven, whether gently or more aggressively.

The Quartix Tracker is again very compact and also plugs into your vehicles onboard diagnostic port (OBDII); the difference being it is much smaller in footprint and can be stowed away in the vehicle making discovery more difficult. Zest again very kindly provided me a preconfigured device which was quickly plugged into my car. I was able to log into the

These types of devices are aimed directly at businesses or indeed individuals that are interested in protecting their vehicle investment. When vehicles are driven sensibly, their lifespan is drastically extended, meaning components of major expense are less likely to require replacement.

By monitoring the use of vehicles, fleet owners and managers are able to monitor the use of their vehicles and provide advice to the drivers if they find they are being driven too hard. Aside from the ‘fleet’ usage tracking, the device also provides a degree of tracking if stolen, but as with the previous device, this is NOT a dedicated stolen vehicle tracker as would-be thieves would find it all too easy to locate and dispose of the device. Again, reporting is extremely detailed and will provide users with extremely detailed information about vehicle usage whether individual or a larger fleet. At the business end of the App, Quartix have partnered with Google, utilising its Map systems which provide usage reports, ‘live’ geographical information and reports of style of driving. If a vehicle is stationary, it will show where and for how long it is positioned, if driving, it will show its current speed. All with a Google map in either ‘road’ style or satellite style.

During the use of the device, my wife had to rush for an emergency dental appointment 15 miles away. Due to commitments with our children, I needed to stay at home. I was very concerned about her in the few hours I was away, but I was comforted knowing she has both safely travelled to and from the dentist in real time. Both gadgets have been really interesting to test and both provide excellent reporting; I personally would lean towards the Quartix due to its outstanding mobile app. If you run a business with a fleet of vehicles and don’t currently keep tabs on driver movement, then the Quartix Vehicle Tracker may well be for you. NOVA SILVER

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 73 2019

May At Nova Silver We have one of the largest amber collections around, and we’re often asked lots of questions about amber.

So... what is it? Amber is the preserved resin of trees that existed over 30 million years ago. (Staggeringly, the last dinosaurs were around 66 million years ago, and the very first modern humans somewhere between 6-2 million years ago.) Amber is often called a gemstone, but, in fact, it is made of different compounds and can’t truly be called a stone. Most people think of amber as fossilized tree resin, which is mostly correct, however if you want to be technical about it, it isn’t a fossil at all. Most fossils start with an animal or plant that is buried, and, over millions of years, mineral elements replace the organic material. This results in a hardened image of the once living thing. The organic compounds of amber have not been replaced, but instead have undergone a chemical transformation into a polymer, a type of natural plastic. This means that amber reacts very differently to gemstones, and, for jewellery makers, this can be very exciting! Amber is much more malleable and lightweight than stones, which typically are much harder and can shatter when being cut into thin or small pieces. We often use amber in designs that use a very simple silver setting because of this fact, alongside it having the most gorgeous warmth when light is able to shine through it. We also use natural Baltic amber in our mosaic amber ranges, which feature slices and slivers of amber that have been mosaicked together to create something that resembles a work of art. As each piece uses natural amber, there are never two pieces the same, which demonstrates the harmony between nature and the maker, using pieces that have the natural glow and beauty of amber to compliment the sleek simplicity of the silver setting. Our mosaic amber range is a limited run, and is currently on sale both in our shop and on our website.

That will propel you to 62mph in a mere 4.3 seconds and on to 180mph. The Cayman handles corners with assurance its recipe of a mid-mounted powerplant and rear-wheel drive gives it colossal levels of adhesion. Combine this with ultra-precise steering and exceptional brakes, and you have a sports car that’ll stick a grin on your face. Lotus’ rickety Exige will do that to you as well, but it can’t equal the Porsche for everyday use. Equipped with adjustable dampers, the

Cayman makes light work of lumps and bumps even with 20-inch alloys at each corner. Thanks to the model’s front and rear load compartments, you don’t even need to worry about practicality - the Cayman’s cargo capacity is enough for a couple of weekend bags - plus a bit more. Although when it comes to occupant space, you do only get a couple of seats. That said, the steering wheel and driver’s seat have a good range of movement, so you shouldn’t have any trouble getting comfy. WITH

LUCAN & SOPHIE FROM WYMONDHAM RADIO

Saturday 23rd February saw a panic-filled start to Norfolk’s newest radio station, Radio Wymondham. Today, just over two months later, we had the opportunity to chat to two of their youngest DJs, Lucan Grave and Sophie Garrod, about their roles at the station and their passion for music.

Why don’t you start by telling us about Radio Wymondham and why you decided to become involved? S - It’s a lovely local community station, with a great mix of presenters and shows. I personally have been trying to break into radio for nearly a year with no luck as there are limited opportunities, especially if, like me, you have a full time job... Radio Wymondham has been amazing in letting me work around my job and my hectic life being part of an amateur dramatics group Attleborough Players. I just wanted to see if I was any good (all I had done previously was some podcasts) and it’s given

me great confidence in myself and doing this as a potential career. I found the station was looking for volunteers and sent them my podcasts and now here we are with my own show “The Sophie Sessions”. L - As Sophie says, it's a lovely group of people with a really wide range of music tastes (also spoken word and chat shows), which has helped create a massive multi-genre hot pot where pretty much anyone should find something they like. I became involved at the beginning of November having seen an article about it on the internet,

and I just thought the idea sounded really interesting. I had no experience with DJing and didn't even really make people listen to the music I liked that much, but I wanted to be involved and was happy to even do some kind of background job, but ended up being asked to host a show. I pretty much fell into it by attending a meeting and that's the really great thing about the station: it offers the opportunity to anyone willing to give it a go, and that's what community radio should be about. Sounds amazing. How would you describe your shows and who do you hope to appeal to? S - Mine is mostly me rambling on about random stuff: mostly TV and film with the occasional Facebook poll about unimportant stuff, and playing really good music. Hopefully there’s something for everyone! L - I enjoy an eclectic mix of music, but my roots really come from rock and metal. My parents used to go to a lot of gigs to see bands like Queen, KISS and Aerosmith; rock was always blasting out of our house and it forms the backbone of most of the music I listen to now. So, it only seemed natural to be the music I would play on the show. I'm all about trying new things and broadening horizons, so what I'm really trying to do is catch the people who are already really into rock and metal, but also those who enjoy maybe only enjoy the classics, with that I hope to introduce them to more music. I’m sure our readers could find something they liked amongst everything you offer! So, if you could have any guest on your shows, who you choose and why? S - Hmmm... that’s a tough one; there’s so many people I’d love on the show. I’d probably say Kesha because she is my favourite musician and celebrity idol, and a radio interview with her would be crazy and unpredictable. Or David Beckham because it would be quite funny

Issue 73 2019

to have the real one in the studio (we have a cardboard cut out of him). L - I'd probably have to say Alice Cooper. For a long time growing up, he was my idol, and the wealth of knowledge and experiences he has would make it an incredible show, but I would most like spend the whole time saying “I'm not worthy!” Interesting choices… who would you least like to grace the studio then? L - Our station manager Bob Johnson, ha, nah… only kidding; he's a keeper and has saved my skin a few times. That's a really tough one for me because I would obviously enjoy the pleasure of a guest I admire or respect, but would really enjoy the pleasure of having someone despicable, so that I really put them in the spot. I guess the worst thing would be to have a guest who just wouldn't engage, either that or Lee Evans; I just can't find him funny! S - Donald Trump for obvious reasons or Jimmy Carr as his laugh just grates on me and I don’t find him funny at all. L - Oh, I forgot… Steve Wright! That guy gets right under my skin! Let’s hope they’re not reading this magazine then! So, imagine that you were only allowed to listen to one album for the rest of your life, which would you pick and why? S - Ooh… that really is “Sophie’s Choice”. That’d be like choosing between children for me... so many albums I couldn’t live without. If I really have to, I’d say Animal by Kesha as that album really changed my life in high school and really gave me confidence. In Blue by The Corrs and Shania Twain’s Come on Over are close seconds. L - Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero: it’s hands down my favourite album. I could listen to it on PAGE

repeat over and over, sing to it constantly and wish I could play it all on guitar. This album is awesome! It's a concept album set in a dystopian America in the future where a totalitarian Christian government rules over the country with an iron fist. Individuality, art and freedom of speech are banned; people are forced to have tracking devices embedded in their wrists and everyone is being spied on. However, there is a resistance trying to fight back with the power of art, Nine Inch Nails, a resistance band, have been sending messages back to the past in the form of websites to try to warn the people of our time. Throughout the whole promotion of the album, Nine Inch Nails created a huge alternative reality game where they would drop clues at gigs such as USB sticks, posters etc., which would lead you to one of these websites sent back from the future, so that you could start to piece together the warnings. It was mental. Me and my friend Rem got really into and it made a huge impact.

It definitely seems that way. That leads me nicely onto my next question then… what about your futures? Where do they lie with regard to you both and radio? Something you’d love to be in your lives forever or happy for it to be a side-line? L - For me, I initially signed on because I just wanted to be involved and never really thought I'd end up hosting a show, but I would like to keep doing it for as long as I can mostly because I enjoy it. I've not really thought much about it as a potential career, but if something were to come along I may consider it. The important thing to me is to try and play music people love and to give them something new to love too. I am hoping the right person will hear it at some point and offer me the odd DJ night though! S - I can’t speak for the radio as it’s still at early but exciting stages. I personally want to be the next Alan Partridge... just kidding! I’ve finally found something I feel I have a knack

for. I count myself extremely lucky to have it, even as a hobby at the moment alongside amateur dramatics, but I’m never one to turn down opportunity when it knocks. Whether this will be the stepping stone of a potential career, who knows? Lots of talented and hard working people I know are still trying to make it in all media industries not just radio... acting, film anything like that are extremely tough to get into and require very thick skin. I’d hate to lose my passion for it as that can happen when people start doing their hobby as a full time career, but it would be amazing to do this full time eventually. We’re all newbies at the moment, which I love as it’s given me so much freedom to be myself on air... and I think that’s what people like about my show. Hopefully, like Lucan says, the right people may hear. At the moment though, if one person tells me I’ve made their Monday night better with my show, I’ve done my job. I truly feel music has the power to heal and that’s all I’m trying to do: spread the power of music. Thank you so much to you both for taking the time out of your busy lives to speak to us. Finally, tell us which one song sums up you and your lives. S - Thank you so much for this opportunity! Oooh, I’d have to say Tik Tok by Kesha because “The party don’t start ‘til I walk in!” Just kidding. At the moment, it would have to Sandcastles by Kate Voegele. “I'd rather make sandcastles. Instead of these wide world decisions. I knew it all was catching up to me. And I don't have a plan at all. But I got this six string religion. And I do believe a song can heal me”. Pretty much sums me up. As for a song to describe my life at the station, it would be “remedy in The Melody” by Sheridan Smith “If you’re out of luck, a little broken. You’ve given up, all the words been spoken. Turn the radio on when you need to feel strong. It'll lift you up.” So, make sure to tune in and let us lift you up at Radio Wymondham.

L - It’s gotta be Queen - the show must go on! It's a massively powerful driving song. In life, there’s ups and downs, and even through loss, heart ache and whatever struggles are thrown your way there's always the next battle and you have to be able to continue on and push through. I'm very much about not being beaten down and, whatever happens, you dust yourself off and keep going. What I'm trying to say is that you can never give up. That's relevant to the radio as well; we have the odd tech hiccup, or you run out of planned music, or the milk has gone bad, but we've told our listeners that they will receive the best radio broadcasts in Norfolk and they are relying on us to provide just that. That was a really tough question to be honest because I feel life is ever changing and to sum it all up in one song is pretty tough ha ha. Thank you very much Vicki for interviewing us. It's been an absolute pleasure and hopefully some of your readers will find their own slice of Radio Wymondham. Don't forget if you are interested in rock, metal and alternative music or just want to try something new tune in at 9-11 every Thursday night and join The Resistance.

Are You Making The Most Of Your Website For Social Media Integration? I'm sure you work hard at engaging on social media and sharing content that you think your followers will like and subsequently repost, but how easy are you making it for your web visitors to actually share your content? Don't think of your website and social media profiles as separate entities - it's important that both can drive traffic to each other. Here's a few tips on ways you can improve your website for social traffic.

1. Social account links This is an absolute must - make sure your web visitors have quick and easy access to all your social profiles. Placement for these is normally in the header and/or footer sections of your website and are either just the social profiles logo or their logos and the words 'Follow us' or something similar. Once clicked on, these take the audience directly to your specific external social platform. Depending on what your website's built in, there's options to manually add these or via a plugin. 2. Embedded social feeds Most social platforms will allow you to display a recent feed of posts from Twitter, Facebook,

Instagram and the like. This encourages your audience to engage. Be selective where you place these embedded feeds though, as these can increase page load time and overuse just gets annoying for the visitor. You can either create these via the platform's developer pages, for instance https://publish.twitter.com/ or through the use of free or paid plugin. Developer SmashBalloon offer Facebook, Twitter and Facebook feed plugins - for instance https://smashballoon.com/instagram-feed/ (other developers are available)! When setting these up you may need an 'API key' to authorise the feed, but this is easy to set up and most social platforms do explain how to do this simply. 3. Sharing buttons Add sharing buttons to selective pages/posts. Don't use these on every page/post, but just on those that you feel your visitors would actually share. There's a variety of options to choose from including in-page share buttons, image share buttons and floating share buttons. Be careful on adding sharing buttons to product pages when a conversion (ie. a purchase) is the key goal. A recent VWO study found that a product page increased conversions by 11.9% after removing social buttons. This might be a bit controversial, but the logic is it's distracting people from the main call to action, which is to buy the product/service.

Make it simple for your visitor to share your page/post by writing the share snippet as well as the sharing URL. If you're using a third party 'sharing' application like ShareThis https://www.sharethis.com/ or Shareaholic https://www.shareaholic.com/website-tools/ social-share-buttons/ these can make it easy to add this snippet. It's worth remembering that social share buttons use JavaScript, so the more sharing options you give your visitors the more scripting is being used, which can severely slow your site down - so be selective in what platforms you'll offer your visitors to quickly share on. Use your analytics package to see where most of your social media referral traffic comes from and also consider who your audience is and what platforms they're likely to use. To Summarise Make sure you link your website to your social media profiles, consider embedding your social network content on your site (sparingly & when it makes sense) and make sharing easy with carefully chosen sharing content options.

Be wary of sharing counters. If your website has a large, active audience, go ahead and display share counters but if your audience isn’t that large, you may want to stay away from sharing counters as low share scores can reduce the perceived value of your articles to your web visitors.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Issue 73 2019

Jorge's Restaurant Reviewed Jorge’s Restaurant: a hidden gem within Norwich city centre. We had a night we will never forget with incredible food, wine and atmosphere. Immediately upon arrival, we were greeted cordially and shown to our table. The modestlysized restaurant (it seats up to 32 diners) was warm and welcoming; we instantly felt at home.

Jorge passionately explained that Portuguese meals are a special occasion: a time for chatting over good food. This was certainly something we were able to replicate during the hours we spent in the establishment. We decided to sample a range of dishes and allowed them all to be selected for us. Having never dined in a Portuguese establishment before, we were both completely clueless, so allowed the expert (Jorge) to take the decisions

out of our hands. Additionally, he paired wines with each dish, complementing the food on offer. First up was the freshly-baked (on premises) bread and a selection of marinated green and black olives. Eagerly anticipating the meal ahead, we had both had a light day when it came to food, so this dish was quickly devoured by us. Next was ham and more bread (two different varieties). We spoke to our waiter about his favourite dishes and this, he explained, was the holy grail when it comes to ham. There were two different types, both cured for long periods of time, but one for an incredible 36 months! The texture and flavour of both were just exceptional. Parma ham has nothing on these delicacies! I’d never fancied trying cured tuna before, but this was beautifully presented before us with salsa verde and a sprinkling of almonds. Jorge explained that it would have the texture of ham, but the flavour of the sea: that description was absolutely spot on. It was simply delicious! Our final starter was the king prawns. They were

cooked to perfection with just the right balance of tang and spice. If it weren’t for the process of removing the shells, I’d probably have devoured them all within seconds. The seafood cataplana was our next surprise. I’d read the details on the menu and thought it sounded appetising, so was excited to be able to sample it. Presented in a unusual copper pot, as the lid was lifted, the smell was divine. Jorge served it for us and with each ingredient being placed in our dishes, a new scent was unveiled. I got stuck in as quickly as I could. The taste was exceptional with subtle depths of flavour, changing with every mouthful particularly with the bursts of freshness from cherry tomato. The balance of clams, tiger prawns, cod, tomato, potato slices, peppers, onion and white wine really was perfect: a dish I could eat again and again. Another main was our next dish: black pork secretos and pluma, served with fries. We chose both standard and sweet potato fries, which were served in miniature copper pans and PAGE

well-seasoned. The pork itself was succulent and the fat soft and tasty. Jorge’s homemade piri piri sauce provided a tangy spice to the dish, working brilliantly alongside the freshness of the tomato, red onion and coriander salsa. I bet you’re wondering if we had room for dessert… the answer is YES! Jorge chose dishes for us, which we probably wouldn’t have selected. However, in future, we certainly will. The chocolate mousse was incredibly rich with an amazing texture. Even when I had told myself I wasn’t going to have any more, my spoon kept dipping in and reappearing with more mousse for me to devour. It was delicious! The Portuguese almond tart arrived looking picture-perfect, served with lavender ice cream and an edible flower. The subtle flavour of the lavender built as you ate the dish and that along with the sticky, chewy tart was a remarkable combination. A coffee to finish the meal for my partner and along came the opportunity to sample Jorge’s Portuguese custard tart: wow!

So tasty and fresh, with a creamy, full-flavoured custard. In addition to the superb wine choices throughout the meal, we also sampled other traditional Portuguese delights such as an almond liqueur and their equivalent of a ‘cognac’, aged in oak barrels. The restaurant itself features some quirky décor and plays traditional music quietly. The crockery is minimalistic, allowing diners to pay attention to the remarkable delights in front of them. Overall, our evening was a sublime one. I messaged a friend shortly after we returned home and told her that I had eaten the best meal of my life. I can honestly say that Jorge’s Restaurant provided us not only with magnificent dishes and drinks, but also amazing anecdotes throughout and a friendly service with such a relaxed, comfortable ambiance to the establishment. If you are seeking somewhere

NIBBLES & TIPPLES

Issue 73 2019

Nibbles &Tipples May Article By Cheryl Cade, Beer Educator My father only gave me a few good pieces of advice in life; ‘Never talk Sport, Politics or Religion unless you want a long, loud conversation.’ This was one of them when I started working in pubs. I would add 'beer' to this advice especially when it comes to social media. This month though, there are reasons to talk Sport and Beer, (unfortunately we can’t avoid the ‘P’ one). If you are Blue you may be drowning your sorrows; if though, you favour yellow and green, then the pubs in Norwich will be seeing a rise in smiles and trade (fingers crossed).

It's not just sport being celebrated or commiserated, but also beer. Over the last month, a number of local brewers have received

awards for their perfectly brewed products. SIBA and CAMRA have been handing over awards to Lacons, Elm Tree, Panther, Moongazer, Peoples and many, many more. Pubs have not missed out either; local CAMRA groups have been voting for their favourites.

The top ones in the region are The Green Dragon in Wymondham and the Stanford Arms in Lowestoft, which have once more been rewarded for their continued hard work in providing, quality service and beer, along side the Wheatsheaf in Ipswich.

Deservingly joining their ranks as the Norwich & Norfolk City Pub of the Year is The Leopard (on Bull Close, Norwich): a pub that I would highly recommend as it normally has on a selected range of local beers (with at least a Lacons and Boudicca), all served in top condition by Bob and his team.

May is the perfect month to enjoy the pubs in Norwich and visit the new City Pub of the Year. The formation of a beer mile in the NR3 area is ideally walk able with some well-paced resting points or by bus you can use the 11/12. It includes 3 brewery taps: The Kings Head (Humpty Dumpty), Artichoke (Golden Triangle) and The Fat Cat Brewery Tap (onsite brewery). Alongside this is the award winning and original City of Ale. City of Ale begins on the 23rd May with a ‘Launch’ party at the Waterfront and this is a ‘Launch’ as our twin city Rouen is sending us some Moongazer collaboration beer. A flotilla of little boats will make its way up the Wensum during that afternoon to deliver the beer harking back to how most produce would arrive and depart the second city in England during the Middle Ages. There will be many great events happening and I am so happy to see that a number of them are featuring Nibbles with our traditional tipple, from Twitter: @icenimagazine

fine dining at the Maids Head with Wild Craft to a Sommelier-led curry & beer at The Rose.

This is also the opportunity for our local brewers to bring out some new beers to delight the taste buds. This year, they will be trying very hard as Norwich will welcome some of the countries greatest Beer Writers as The British Guild of Beer Writers are holding some special events during the first few days. WHEN YOU'RE THINKING...

When You're Thinking About Getting Married

'Will you marry me?' Those words can change our lives forever. If it's our first serious commitment, we may have been living together for a while and have now decided to progress our relationship to the next level. We may be thinking about settling down, nest-building, becoming more career-focused. Getting married will no doubt influence our future choices and decisions and see us becoming an adult. If it's the second time around, we may feel elated at having another chance at happiness, or we may be thinking about getting married to ensure that our partner is safeguarded and properly provided for in their later years. Things can change after we're married and here are a few tips to support that transition: Continue to communicate with genuine love, affection and interest. When life becomes busy, it can be all too easy

•

to get into the habit of quickly delivering news updates on your day, becoming a stressed, preoccupied presence at the dining table or spending evenings immersed in your phone. Communicating properly means switching off your phone, listening and then following up with genuine interest in what's happening in each other's lives.

• Keep channels of communication open and share your thoughts, fears and concerns, even when you're tired. It's tough for your partner if they find out about any stresses or troubles you're going through from family, friends or months down the line. Share both the good and the bad news. Agree on a specific, regular time for any deep and meaningful conversations that can't be properly conducted in a normal, busy week. Maintaining open and honest communications is the best way to remain happily married.

• Respect each other's opinions and decisions. There may be times when you agree to disagree; you may never fully understand

each other's point of view, but respecting their standpoint is what's really important. Each of you is an individual, with your own back story, values and opinions. And even if one of you is wrong, it's not always necessary to argue vehemently to prove your point. Give and take are important components in remaining happily married.

contributing to the smooth running of the household, especially if they have busy, committed lives. Sometimes there may need to be exceptions to the rule. Or it may be determined to be a more constructive use of your time and money to hire someone else to do those tasks for you.

respectful of them, even if you're unhappy about something that's happened. It makes an important difference to the quality of your relationship. Other people may want to offer parenting advice or choose to disagree or criticize your partner. Stand together and be loyal, even if you need to have a conversation later, in private.

interests and friendships too. Enjoying some independent activities adds value to your conversations and helps to keep the spark alive. Some friends or hobbies may not interest your partner. Respect that and allow each other some space. Those times can provide a break, external stimulus and provide new topics of conversation for when you meet up again later on.

• Allow each other space. It's good to • Support your partner in public, being share, but it's also good to maintain separate

• Admit if you're wrong. Relationships

can struggle if there's felt to be a lingering, unresolved injustice, especially if integrity or honesty are called into question. If you're wrong be prepared to work to improve the situation. Allow time to sit and discuss the matter, calmly and without rancour. Explain yourself, accept the feedback and try to determine a way forward.

• But equally be prepared at times to join

your partner in things that want or need to do. Make the effort to be supportive on occasion if your attendance or input is important to them. It oils the wheels of your relationship and may win you brownie points! A marriage is often described as a work in

• Share the everyday stuff. Some people progress, evolving, adapting and changing love cooking together and it can provide a valuable opportunity to talk, chatter, gossip animatedly together and invest in your relationship. Even gardening, decorating, walking the dog can be done together and become important 'us' time. And sharing mundane tasks means that both are

over the years. The best way to remain happily married is to maintain fun, friendship, open communications and mutual respect. When both people feel they are working in the same direction, a happy marriage can survive the bad, not just enjoy the good.

TOP MAKEUP TIPS

Issue 73 2019

Lina Hallberg’s Top Makeup Tips for that special day!

Preparation is the key! You can’t put wallpaper on a wall without preparing it first; the same goes for makeup. If you want to look great for that special day, you need to start looking after your skin months ahead. ALWAYS wash your makeup off and do not use baby wipes! If you have to use wipes, use ones especially designed for the face. Moisturise am and pm, and try gentle exfoliator once a week. When it comes to choosing a foundation, make sure you try it on in natural daylight and match it with your neck: a face three shades darker is not a good look. Also remember, once you add blusher and bronzer, you will warm the face up. I always start with eyes if using a dark colour or glitter as its easier to clean up fall out. SPF and primer are essential, especially in the summer. If you have cool toned skin, pinks will look better on you; on warm olive skin, a peach blush is lovely. Don’t forget to wear WATERPROOF MASCARA! Even those of us hardcore enough not to cry watching Watership Down can be prone to tears at a wedding!

Always remember, less is more. Something that looks amazing on stage or in a nightclub will not look great in broad daylight... heavy foundation and contouring are not recommended unless you are planning on going on stage as a line down your face might look amazing in a picture, but not so amazing close up. BUT! Rule number one with makeup really is that there are no rules! If it makes you feel good, wear it! It’s all about YOU! Ignore the advice that you shouldn’t wear shimmer eyeshadow over the age of 40… but do make sure you review your skincare routine and products every few years as you skin changes and a foundation you wore in your 20s may not suit you anymore. My must-have products: • Dermalogica skin smoothing cream • Elizabeth Arden 8-hour cream • Charlotte Tilbury magic concealer • Nars Laguna bronzer • L’oreal paradise mascara If you are looking for more tips and advice, I offer bespoke 1-2-1 makeup and skincare lessons. CHOOSING THE RIGHT...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 73 2019

Choosing The Right Wedding Dress My name is Chantelle O’Neill, I’ve been a seamstress for over 10 years and work from my home in Attleborough. I absolutely love my job and the people I get to work with. After having my two children, I took a step back to try and balance my work and home life. One local bridal boutique has always been there for me and has kept me busy through the years. La Crème on Exchange Street in Norwich have been a bridal boutique for over 16 years. I used to walk past it as a young girl dreaming that one day I would be able to wear a beautiful gown! Now, I get to work on all of these amazing dresses every week! Jill and Lucy at La Crème are brilliant at helping brides with finding their dress and always make every bride feel and look amazing. They have a great selection of dresses that range from the more traditional to the very boho and unusual gowns.

There are a few things to think about when it comes to the fitting process of your dress, here is an overview of the more important points:

1.

After you have found your perfect dress, your consultant will usually take your measurements; these are to check against the supplier’s size chart. It may be that your hip measurement is bigger than your bust measurement, so the bigger size would be needed to fit that area.

PAGE

52

Twitter: @icenimagazine

Facebook: www.facebook.com/icenimagazine

Instagram: icenimagazine

CHOOSING THE RIGHT...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

This means that when your dress arrives, you’re more than likely to need some sort of alteration for the perfect fit. The length of the dress is also a standard length and again will probably need to be shortened.

2.

Alterations can take several weeks in the busy season (March-August). You will need at least two fittings: one to pin the dress and another to check the finished alterations. On occasions, you may need a third if more work is required following the second fitting. Make sure to leave time for these fittings when ordering your dress. A lot of dresses take 4-6 months for delivery, so it’s not uncommon to order a dress 9-12 months before the big day!

3.

If you have decided on buying a sample or sale gown, then it’s fine to buy one that is a couple of sizes too big. I would say 2 sizes can easily be taken in at the side seams with maybe a dart or two for shaping, but any more than that then the proportions aren’t right and the dress would need a lot more work to make it the perfect fit.

Issue 73 2019

4. It is very important to take your wedding

shoes to your fitting! A dress’ hem cannot be altered until you have them. Save some time and remember them for the first fitting. You may also like to think about underwear as some dresses are made in a way that you either don’t need a bra or you just can’t because of the style! I go through so many pairs of bra boosters, which help to give lift and support if you feel like you need it. If you can’t face not wearing a bra, then again you must have the bra you intend on wearing on the day at the first fitting. Every bra is a different shape and will affect the fit of the dress.

5. Extras! Bustle loops enable you to tie up the

long train at the back of the dress when you feel you need to move about easier in the evening and for dancing. It’s done with either ribbons or poppers under the back seam of the dress. Your seamstress should be able to show you your options and what will work best with your dress. Another extra could be the addition of straps, sleeves or maybe a bolero if you fancy creating two looks for throughout the day. Your consultant and seamstress will be able to guide you through the process and remind you of all these things. The biggest thing is to relax and enjoy the experience! If you have any queries then please do not hesitate to get in touch and I will be happy to help. ECO-FRIENDLY WEDDING

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 73 2019

Planning An EcoFriendly Wedding We all know how important it is to take care of our environment, but, when it comes to weddings, often we forget about the bigger picture, focusing largely on creating an egocentric day to remember. What if we told you it’s possible to have both? Follow these five simple steps to create a day you’ll never forget without impacting negatively on the world around us.

1. Reduce paper usage

how close you are to that person, how much you know about them. Time-consuming perhaps, but quirky and they can double up as a wedding favour, a treasured keepsake.

2. Repurpose things

Rather than splashing out on new vases or table centrepieces, try upcycling items, which would ordinarily be thrown into the recycling bin. Old glass vases are perfect as candle holders. Simply tie a bow with some twine around the top of the jars and they’ll look great!

Instead of sending out intricate paper invitations, why not email guests? Alternatively, if you’re not quite ready to embrace a paperfree culture, use recycled paper. You could even make your own; it’s not as difficult as it sounds and would certainly be unique. Place names are often marked by a folded piece of card and thrown out at the end of the special day. Why not try a personalised painted rock instead? Choose a design, which demonstrates PAGE

Issue 73 2019

If, however, you do over-cater, there are local organisations who will take food off your hands. Research, in advance, local homeless charities, who would collect and distribute the leftovers to those in need.

5. Choose a sustainable venue

This does not mean you have to hold your wedding in a forest or farm, rather that you select a venue with a conscience.

3. Transport

Now this one is a bit showy, but really does impact the environment positively by reducing your carbon footprint. Ditch the limousine or the Rolls Royce and opt for a horse-drawn carriage instead. Having the ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening celebrations in the same venue will also cut down on vehicle usage with fewer miles needed to be travelled. Environmental considerations aside, this can also put guests at ease knowing they are settled in the one place for the rest of the day.

Research the energy they use in your favoured location: do they have solar panels, for example? Also, contemplate how they deal with waste and if they have secure links with other local providers. Once you’ve found the place, you’ll know! Do make sure to avoid using a marquee in the grounds though: consider the environmental impact transporting this will have.

4. Limit food waste

Consider the number of guests attending and plan the amount of food accordingly. Also, avoid using throwaway crockery and cutlery; you can hire quirky retro or vintage dining sets for a low cost, safe in the knowledge that you are not going to be sending more plastic into landfill.

We have presented you with five easy ways to minimise your carbon ‘wedding’ footprint. Many other solutions exist and we would love to hear about your own eco-friendly celebrations. PAGE

Top 10 Tips For Getting Into Shape For Your Wedding! Mike Smith, qualified personal in plastic containers, we simply encourage you trainer and founder of Happy to know what’s for dinner tonight and have your workout pencilled into your diary. Sports and Fitness, shares his top tips with you in preparation for Team work - Have you been open and honest to your partner or a friend your big day. Consistency - Along with a consistent sleep pattern, having meals at regular times and working out frequently will have an enormous effect on your health and well-being. This is sometimes hard to put in place, but, if possible, I encourage a sit down meal each day, two and a half hours of high intensity exercise per week, and eight hours of sleep per night. Plan and preparation - just like your wedding, food and exercise relies on prep. By simply having meals planned, it will stop you from making rash decisions leading to poor food intake. We are not saying pre-bake your meals and have them all set out

about your fitness aspirations? We suggest you are. Maybe speak to someone who will support you, encourage you and maybe even join you by enjoying wholesome meals and exercise classes with you.

Inclusive eating - NO DIETS! Concentrate on which foods you need to or would like to include in your diet. Cutting food out never works. For example, if you ‘ban chocolate’ or cut things out, you will eventually resort to a ‘binge’. Why not try a strip of chocolate after every workout as a treat? Concentrate on including five portions of fruit and veg per day and two portions of fish per week. Drinking plenty of water will also encourage progression.

Reward - A good day, a good week, or a good result could mean celebration. Try adding something you really enjoy to your schedule as a reward? Celebrate with a movie, a new book, half an hour listening to your favourite music, a relaxing bath or even a piece of chocolate. Celebrate success! Targets - Have a clear simple target to achieve. ‘Lose 6 pound in 6 weeks’, ‘drop a dress size in 8 weeks’ etc. A clear, written-down target is easier to achieve and sets a visual reminder of where you want to be and by when. Maybe even attach your target to the fridge if you are confident enough to. SMART goal - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time. ‘I’m going to get skinny’ or ‘get jacked’ is not a sufficient goal. Add detail and purpose to your progress.

walk with the dog. Focus on doing something that will leave you a little breathless and build from there. Challenge yourself - Wherever you are at, whatever you decide to do, be proud. If you see an opportunity to do something in your day to day life that may leave you breathless, I say go for it. Walk/run up some stairs, play ‘tag’ with the kids, gardening etc. Find small opportunities to push yourself.

Variety - Don’t be boring and think you have to eat chicken and rice for six months, and complete the same routine at the gym that never really pushes you. If you can afford it, sign up to a class, and complete various activities like cycling, swimming etc. Keep food fun and eat things that you enjoy. Slow steps you do not start slowly is no shame

- One step at a time. If regularly exercise, then and build it up. There in going out for a long

Be realistic - Doing nothing for months then spending three days working out and eating salad is not healthy. One step at a time, one day at a time, one challenge at a time. If you have a bad day (and you will – we all do!), don’t compensate by not eating the following day. Reset, re-establish your goal, and settle back into a routine. Be proud of who you are and keep moving forward. Exercise and nutritional food will always be there for you, how you use it is up to you. WEDDING TRADITIONS

Wedding Traditions

There are many aspects linked to weddings, which we have come to expect, but what are their origins? The White Dress In the past, brides would wear their very best clothes in which to get married. However, once Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840 in an ivory-white gown, white dresses suddenly became commonplace and on trend. Additionally, some people do associate the choice of the colour white with innocence and virginity.

Tossing the Bouquet Many years ago, it was considered good luck to touch the bride. In fact, guests would regularly attempt to rip pieces of her gown off, often ending rowdily. In a bid to stop this happening, brides began to toss their bouquets into the crowd of single ladies, who had been gathered together. It is believed that the lucky lady, who catches the flowers, will be the next to get married.

The Father gives away the Bride Seen as a heart-warming, tear-jerking moment by many, this tradition does in fact go back to the days when daughters belonged to their fathers and they were literally handed over to the groom like a business transaction.

The Wedding Rings The earliest example of wedding rings dates back to Ancient Egypt where the circular shape was first associated with eternity. Nowadays, rings are usually worn by one or both of the married couple, night and day, with many believing that the removal of wedding rings is unlucky.

The Honeymoon A much-loved explanation for this, which has now been dismissed, was that couples would drink mead (a drink made using honey) together throughout the first month of their marriage. Nowadays though, it is commonly believed that the month following the nuptials is the sweetest and the idea of going away was simply in an attempt to visit family and friends unable to make the big day.

Simple And Effective Ways To Enhance Your Wedding Day

Epic Event Hire, a Norfolkbased events hire company, can help with many aspects of your wedding. Continue reading for their wedding must-haves and how they can enhance your perfect day.

DJ

For many couples, the evening entertainment is the most important part of the wedding day. A good quality DJ should be able to make recommendations for other aspects of your night. Music is what they do, so if you're looking for ceremony music suggestions or first dance ideas, then ask them for advice. A DJ is there to play the songs that you and your partner love, but fluidity is also important. Work with yours to ensure that you hear your

favourites but also consider your guests too after all, a full dance floor is the sign of a great night. Try picking your top 10 tracks to give your DJ a sense of the kind of music you like, and then allow them to prepare a set that will tick all the boxes. At Epic Event Hire, we offer our customers an online wedding party planner, which they can complete with all the information relevant to the evening that the DJ will work to.

Lighting So, whilst there is a whole range of lighting available, it all depends on the location of your wedding. You can use the lighting to draw attention to things like your cake and any floral displays or table displays. Maybe you’ve got particular architecture in the venue, for example, a barn, then you can use lighting to highlight certain areas. PAGE

Lighting can really set the mood and atmosphere and, whilst not so effective during the day, can really come into its own once it starts to get dark. Lighting is also great for enhancing photos and can really create the WOW factor for your wedding. At Epic Event Hire, we have a huge range of lighting options from fairy lights & festoon lights to up lighting and lighting projection.

Photo booth One of the best reasons to have a photo booth is to entertain your guests! It's important to consider that weddings have down times, and you have to think of a way to keep your guests occupied throughout.

Hanging lanterns Hanging Lanterns are becoming an increasingly popular decor choice for weddings. Dangling clusters of Chinese Hanging Lanterns from the ceiling of a marquee, barn or function room can completely transform a room. They are perfect for suspending in traditional wedding marquees, barns with exposed beams or hotel conference rooms. At Epic Event Hire, our lanterns are available in a wide range of sizes and colours and our expert installation team have all the accessories to quickly and easily suspend lanterns in all sorts of indoor and outdoor spaces.

Table decorations

The number one reason for having a photo booth at your wedding is the memories it creates, for you and your guests, young and old.

Planning your colour scheme and decor is an exciting part of the pre-wedding prep, especially when it comes to the guests’ tables where they’ll spend a lot of their time.

At Epic Event Hire, our brand new selfie post box is now available to hire, combining a wedding post box and a photo booth, your guests post their cards then post their selfies online whilst collecting all the images it takes for you!

Table decorations are often the main focal point at the wedding breakfast. Consider the size of decorations carefully to make sure guests are able to see and talk to each other. At Epic Event Hire, we have a huge range of accessories that will help incorporate chosen themes, from mirrors that will add a hint of sparkle to the table to large candelabras. Or if you’re on a smaller budget, fresh blooms arranged with foliage in old bottles or jars trimmed with ribbon can create just as big an impact, without breaking the bank!

Staff hire

Looking after your event is an important task and getting the right team of staff to manage the day can make all the difference to its success.

No matter what size your party or gathering, hiring waiting staff can be a weight lifted from your shoulders particularly if this is not something your venue supplies.

HENS ON BOARD

Hens On Board

When someone says ‘hen party’, be honest, what comes to mind? L plates, glittery sashes and willy straws? This sort of ‘do is more of a don’t for some. If you are one of those people repulsed by the idea of a rowdy night on the tiles advertising your ‘last night of freedom’ to all of your fellow revellers, then perhaps a more sophisticated event would suit your needs. Broadland Charters offer bespoke packages for up to eight people. Cruise the Norfolk Broads in style on board their luxury skippered sports cruiser, Norfolk Time, for two hours or longer depending on your own personal requirements. Why not consider adding some extra special touches to your event? These include champagne on arrival, canapes, a celebratory cake, themed cupcakes, picnics, brunch, handmade chocolates or truffles – all food is locally made and, where possible, locally sourced. Furthermore, you could consider adding flowers, boat decorations or even captain hats.

Norfolk Time’s cockpit is covered and heated (with the option of snuggly blankets), meaning you can enjoy your cruise whatever the weather. If the Broads are sunny and warm, alfresco is where it’s at. Don’t forget to bring your sunglasses as the sun reflecting off the water can be gloriously powerful. In need of a pamper in preparation for the big day too? Broadland Charters are also able to provide on board treatments such as hand massages and gel nails. Prices start at just £25 per person. The entire experience can be tailored to meet your party’s needs. Find out more over at: www.broadlandcharters.com. Mooring is at South Walsham. Exploring What Happens To An Online Legacy

Dante Or Die: User Not Found -

May 13, 6pm & 8.30pm It’s the moment of your death. There’s a magic button. Do you delete your entire online legacy? Or do you keep it - and leave the choice for someone else? Would you delete your online legacy at the moment of your death? User Not Found is a pioneering and intimate new play by celebrated site-specific theatre company Dante or Die and award-winning writer Chris Goode.

Examined with humour and heartbreak, it was created by Dante Or Die’s joint artistic directors Daphna Attias, who also directs, and Terry Donovan. The words are by Chris Goode who is recognised as one of Britain’s most innovative and ground-breaking theatre-makers.

Taking place on May 13 in the intimate surroundings of Norwich Theatre Royal’s newlyrefurbished and re-named Prelude restaurant, audience members will be given a smartphone and a pair of headphones to be immersed in one man’s story, as he’s faced with keeping or deleting his partner’s online existence.

Having previously been performed by Terry Donovan, the sole character is portrayed on tour by Andy McLeod who sits amongst the audience as he narrates his story, with his voice heard live through headphones. His words are entwined with an evocative new score by Yaniv Fridel and immersive lighting and set design by Zia Bergin.

This location-based storytelling piece is presented by the theatre in partnership with the Norfolk and Norwich Festival. The production has received four star reviews from The Sunday Times, The Guardian and The Independent.

Dante or Die also collaborated with digital agency Marmelo Digital to build a bespoke app that syncs smartphones and is central to the performance of the play.

Now on tour playing in cafes around the UK, the award-winning 90-minute show premiered to sell-out performances at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2018, having previously previewed at venues which included the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich.

User Not Found follows the company’s previous critically-acclaimed works, including most recently Take On Me which is currently on tour to leisure centres nationwide, Handle With Care by Chloe Moss, I Do which has been staged in hotels nationwide, and La Fille à la Mode at the Theatre Royal Haymarket & National Theatre.

It follows the story of Terry and Luka who were together for nine years until Luka left Terry. Then Luka died leaving Terry as his online legacy executor. In a rapidly changing digital age, a story of contemporary grief is presented through this intimate, funny performance that gently interrogates our need for connection and the fate of our digital afterlives.

Tickets cost from £10 to £15 and the performances will have embedded captioning. Show Information: Dante Or Die: User Not Found, Monday May 13, 6pm and 8.30pm. Tickets £10-£15. To book, log onto www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk or call the box office on 01603 630000. PAGE

World-Renowned Orchestra Bring Diverse Programme To Norwich

Russian Philharmonic Of Novosibirsk - May 19 A world-renowned orchestra, who have performed across the globe for over 60 years, are set to bring a diverse programme of music to Norwich Theatre Royal. The Russian Philharmonic of Novosibirsk will present three pieces, which share richness and depth while each being very different. Mussorgsky’s colourful and iconic Pictures At An Exhibition will head the concert on May 19. It was first composed as a tribute to the Russian artist Viktor Hartmann when Mussorgsky visited a retrospective exhibition of his work. He wanted to capture the experience in music and ended up with an interpretation of 10 different paintings.

Each piece is different ranging from the sombre and lyrical The Old Castle through the forceful sound of Two Jews: One Rich and One Poor to the cheery The Market At Limoges. Each piece is also linked by an upbeat theme representing the composer walking through the exhibition. Also in the programme is Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1, renowned for its romantic air and deeply expressive, rousing composition. The thunderous opening moments are incredibly well-known, and this sweeping rhythm is heard at the beginning and end of the concerto, with the middle movement featuring a slightly more soulful feel. Completing the concert is Wagner’s Overture to The Mastersingers of Nuremberg. The composer

took a break from his Ring Cycle to write it with the piece itself being slightly lighter than his other work. Wagner realized this prelude stood alone as a piece of music away from the opera and so he adjusted it slightly, so it could be performed as a solo piece. The Russian Philharmonic of Novosibirsk were founded in 1956 by Arnold Kats who remained with them for over 50 years and he helped build their reputation as one of the country’s leading orchestras. They have performed in many prestigious venues and festivals across Europe, Japan and China, and boast a repertoire that spans Bach to contemporary composers. Their principal conductor and artistic director Thomas Sanderling will be conducting the Norwich Theatre Royal concert. Music was in his blood as his father was the eminent conductor Kurt Sanderling, and Thomas was appointed music director of the Halle Opera at the age of 24. He has conducted many of the world’s finest orchestras and opera companies and has won many prizes including an ECHO KLASSIK award for a recording of works by Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Pictured: Thomas Sanderling

And the eminent Russian pianist Sergei Redkin will be the soloist for the concert. Sergei started playing the piano at the age of five before studying at the Music Lyceum in his native Krasnoyarsk a year later. He went on to learn his craft at many prestigious schools in his home country including the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. Since graduating two years ago, he has been an artist-in-residence at the Queen Elisabeth Chapel in Belgium, performed worldwide, and debuted with the likes of the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonia Orchestra. John Bultitude, of Norwich Theatre Royal, said: “This concert will be a fantastic opportunity to see one of Russia’s finest orchestras perform alongside a pianist who has had music in his blood from a very young age. “It will also be a great chance to experience the diversity of Pictures At An Exhibition and be swept up with the emotion of one of Tchaikovsky’s most rousing pieces of work.” Show Information: Russian Philharmonic of Novosibirsk, Sunday 19 May at 7.30pm. Tickets £10-£37.50.
