Then straight after, on pages 24-25, read our Interview with the legendary Grant Holt whose book is out NOW! So, until next month, enjoy reading all that this issue has to offer and we hope that the weather lasts long enough to enjoy plenty of BBQs and sunny evenings in the garden.

Positive Activities

We provide positive activities for young people who may have limited opportunities in life. We give them a safe, supportive environment where our staff will provide them with opportunities to learn, socialise and be a positive part of their community.

Library Link is a new project funded by the North Norfolk Youth Advisory Board and delivered by The Benjamin Foundation, in partnership with Norfolk County Council Library Service.

We are running young people’s activity sessions fortnightly in each of the eight North Norfolk libraries, raising awareness of the many activities and resources available to young people.

Each library group will be led by young people and their ideas will shape the activities taking place, so if there is something for 11-19 year olds you would like to see happening in your local library, let us know. PAGE

June At Nova Silver Pearl Jewellery

Those with June birthdays are lucky enough to have a couple of our most popular stones to choose from as their birthstone: moonstone and pearl. Often, pearls have a reputation of being a little unfashionable, but we’d like to set the record straight. While not an actual stone, pearls are thought to have been used as jewellery for as long as humankind has been around, and there’s probably not a period of time that pearls have been out of favour. In fact, in 2012, French researchers in the Emirate of Umm al Quwain, United Arab Emirates, discovered a pearl believed to have originated between 5547 and 5235 BC. That makes it over 7500 years old, and is thought to be evidence that Neolithic peoples were diving for these treasures and valued them highly. The Ancient Greeks had a legend that pearls were the hardened tears of the goddess of love Aphrodite and in the past they have been thought of as symbolic of purity and love. It is perhaps because of this that they have become a traditional jewellery option for weddings. Pearls can be used to create beautiful and simple strung necklaces and bracelets or as an accent on jewellery that provides a subtle shimmer. We’ve noticed that many brides are going for nontraditional options and choosing pieces that reflect their personality and sense of style, while retaining a classic colour palette. We think this trend is set to continue! As weddings become increasingly varied, so too are jewellery choices, and here at Nova, we’ve been lucky enough to help many brides over the years choose the perfect jewellery to compliment the special dress. Our Magpie Nest Set is one of our most popular bridal wear options, but also works well for anyone looking for a simple set that blends modern and traditional. Trends are showing that pearls are shaking off their stuffy image and look set to remain in fashion for the foreseeable future!

The Diary of a Norfolk Family By Mark King It is nineteen years since it last happened.

Above: Mark King

In that time, two wonderful children have come into my life and I have written two award winning books in Frenzy a Daniel Jones Story and Daniel Jones Doom, and I’m now eighty percent through the manuscript for the third book in the series.

In those nineteen years, I have moved home twice and seen my football team Norwich City promoted and relegated on too many occasions. Pets have come and pets have sadly gone. It is nineteen years since I last went on a lads’ holiday abroad. Well, by our average age, it would better be described as a gentlemans’ holiday. Our group was made up of people I have become friends with through my local pub. I organised it and was expecting a relaxing time, but after a week in the presence of five fellow men, who are all single and have been confirmed bachelors for many years, it was at times hard to even call it a gentlemen’s holiday!

By the time we flew back into Norwich airport, I could see why some of my group of friends are still single after all these years. I had a renewed appreciation of my wife as well and couldn’t wait to see the family, and Percy our dog. Compromise and respect for others’ wishes are probably two of the most important things needed most to make any relationship work, and when you have spent the last two or three decades on your own with nobody else, but yourself to worry about, these are two words that are in short supply. All in all, I still enjoyed my time away and would probably give it another go, but with some small changes! In three months’ time I’m on holiday again, but this time with the family and I mean all the family. We’re all off to Devon with Percy as well, plus my mother-in-law and her dog too for another week of relaxation!!!!! www.always-hanging-around.blogspot.com Follow on twitter: @author_king

Dieting With Beev I have a posh function coming up in a couple of weeks; one that will require a pretty dress. That's no problem. I have a wardrobe of pretty dresses. The bloody problem is that due to my wine/pizza/ cheese addictions, plus, let's Above: Keri Beevis face it, being a lazy bugger, I can't currently fit into any of them. Cue mad last-ditch attempt to shed a few pounds. Monday: Banana for breakfast, salad for lunch and salad for dinner. I have an inner battle as I stare longingly at a bottle of red wine, but manage to summon up some willpower. I meet my quota of steps and go to bed feeling satisfied. 'I have got this,' I tell myself smugly. Tuesday: I swear my clothes are feeling looser. Feeling motivated I do extra steps on the way into work. I had forgotten it is the charity bake day at work and I stop off to buy cream doughnuts as a contribution. (Not that anyone would voluntarily eat anything I have baked anyway). Bump into best mate, Hannah (who has had the same idea) and we concoct a plan to buy extra doughnuts to hold back for us. Doughnut scoffed, I go upstairs just to admire the baked goods table and make a contribution, but Krysia in marketing has made sausage rolls and Ian, our designer, has brought in a divine looking chocolate cake. What is a girl to do? 'And it is for charity,' I justify to myself, wiping the cake crumbs from my mouth and feeling a bit sick.

I concentrate on getting my steps up and have a jacket potato for dinner. Again, I look longingly at the wine and settle for a halfway house slimline G&T. I fall asleep on the sofa, exhausted from exerting all this willpower. Wednesday: Today I am going to kick my diet plan into shape. Banana for breakfast... and maybe a cheeky croissant I found buried in the bottom of my drawer. It had been there a while, but passed the Beev test of 'If it smells okay I'll give it a bash'. Yes, I know. I'm gross. Salad for lunch. Steps were appalling, so made an effort to get a couple of thousand in during my lunch break. Come back from an afternoon meeting to find a Krispy Kreme Doughnut on my desk. I can't be rude. Apparently teleport from my desk to my house, despite detouring to Mum's to feed her cat, as my stupid pretend Fitbit decides not to register any steps. Stare at super giant boobs and two tummies in the mirror and wonder if fat and pasty might eventually come back into fashion. Mutter, 'Sod it,' Google 'Ball gowns for fat people', and pour a glass of wine. PAGE

WHAT DOES LOSING...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 74 2019

What Does Losing Teach You About Success? Losing sucks; nobody wants to lose. You often hear people talking about celebrating failure. I can’t think of a sillier thing to say. Who celebrates failure? What does that even mean? Do these people buy a cake and sing “happy failure to us”? One must accept failure, of course, it’s part of the journey. To think that we can build something remarkable with no failures along the way is unrealistic. But you should definitely not celebrate failure; accept it, learn from it and move on. Failure can bring teachings, if we listen. Resilience, perseverance, teamwork and focus are always sharpened and strengthened when coming out of a setback. There’s plenty of

material you can read about these. The one that I feel is equally important and seldom mentioned, is choosing to truly inject passion in what you do. I have a passion for inspiring others to do better. I don’t believe that I am, as a whole, better than anyone else. I might be better at something; others might be better at a different thing. I've chosen to use my passion in everything that I do. If my job was that of collecting rubbish in the morning from residential homes, I would do the same. If I was a builder, I would do the same. If I was a lawyer, or a painter, or a singer, I would do the same. My job is to run a digital agency, so I'm doing it here. And I do that by implementing either formal or informal, overt or covert, ways of inspiring my

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

team, my staff, my colleagues and anyone I come into contact with. I think this is one of the biggest teachings failure offers: find ways to truly love doing what you do and getting up from failures might be a lot easier. Before you allow your pessimistic monkey (we all have one) to sabotage you, yes you can do this in any job and with any passion. Let’s imagine you are a lawyer with a passion for drawing. You could use your artistic passion and skills to draw that infographic and move away from the traditional way of presenting legal information. Or maybe your passion is singing; you could launch the singing lawyer podcast, all about legal issues, in harmony. These are wild ideas I am thinking of on the fly. Use your expertise and passion and come up with something that suits you. The point here is to not convince yourself that your passion cannot be translated into something that you can do daily and profit from. I think that’s really sad. Every single person on the planet has something special to offer; but we know that we can only add true value when we’re in a state of excitement and passion. Even if you're not in love with the technicalities of what you do, spice it up, change it up a bit and inject your passion into what you do.

Issue 74 2019

I have competed in high-level mixed martial arts (MMA) whilst leading a digital marketing agency and speaking at events. I needed to interact with staff and clients faceto-face. When you do something like mixed Luca Senatore martial arts, you might end up going to work with bruises on your face, or limping, there’s always a chance I’ll turn up with a big black eye. How did I deal with that? I’ve made being a mixed martial arts athlete part of my brand. We worked on this at the agency: MMA was all over my LinkedIn profile and all over my Facebook profile; we published more than one blog post on the agency website about it and generally made it very much part of my brand. Not only did this give me a valid reason to potentially carry marks on my face at work, but it also gave me license to talk about it, write about it and it provided something that stood out, a talking point. What does this have to do with learning from failures? Being able to do what you’re truly passionate about whilst running your business allows you to get up from failures with more energy. It makes working hard worth the main, even when you lose. And when you win, it makes that win even sweeter. Don’t wait to find what you love; inject what you love in everything you do, at any given time. Good luck. Luca Senatore is the author of the new book The Agency and the director at multiaward-winning digital agency Genie Goals. PAGE

Issue 74 2019

My Zero Waste Buddies! Last month, I mentioned that my bag is full of handy zero waste items that allow me to still enjoy food and drink out and about and with the huge variety of vegan options now in Norwich, being ‘take-out’ prepared is an absolute must when it comes to foody treats! So, what’s in my bag? I carry with me my very sexy collapsible ‘stojo’ take out mug. This is a winner. It’s lightweight, small and BPA free. Some coffee shops also give you 2 stamps when you use your own cup, so I get that free hot chocolate even quicker! My collapsible lunch box is a close friend and allows me to buy take out treats without the packaging. This again folds down for space saving in my bag. I love cake and I get way more satisfaction when I can eat it zero waste style! I carry my super neat ‘JosephJoseph’ cutlery set. Energy is used to make even the most biodegradable fork for those chips! My napkin, which I can wash and reuse, and my stainless steel water bottle from ‘onegreenbottle’ come everywhere with me, along with my shopping bags and fruit and veggie bags. I also have a stainless steel straw which comes out with me when it’s time for cocktails! Although these items have cost me money, they have and will continue to last for years and motivate me to reduce my impact on the Earth whilst still enjoying treats. Other ideas are to just pop a fork, spoon and Chinese take-out pot in your

bag and keep reusing the same bottle for water. I recognise that each time I choose to not take that plastic wrapping and give back the napkin and use my own, that I am consciously taking part in a movement to take care of the planet I live on. An even bigger element to this, is that when I use my zero waste items they spark conversation and connection with others around me. I get to talk to the shop owner, staff or another customer about the impact our choices have on the planet and how we can reduce this and it spreads the message. I get lots of positive comments about my colourful zero waste gear. This subject needs talking about and while I may annoy the next customer because I have my 10 loose brussel sprouts and carrots rolling all over the conveyor belt and it takes a little longer for the checkout staff to weigh and pass to me, that is a small inconvenience and I trust that by seeing my small changes, others may be inspired to find changes they could also make. What could you add to your bag that would help you reduce the amount of packaging you are handed over with those take-out treats? Can you inspire someone else today? Next month - a sneaky peek at a zero waste period and some composting top tips and myth busting! Shona PAGE

Q

Issue 74 2019

&A

WITH

SOPHIE MCKINNA Norfolk-Born GB shot putter. British Indoor Champion 2019. European and double Commonwealth Games finalist. First of all, thanks ever so much for agreeing to this interview. It’s an honour to be chatting to one of Norfolk’s young athletes. Why don’t you start by telling us what you do and how you got into it? So I’ve always been a pretty sporty person. My grandad Dave Stringer used to pay for NCFC so I’ve been brought up around sport all my life. I originally started out my athletics life as a sprinter in the 100m and 200m, but soon discovered that shot putting was for me after my mum entered me into a competition and I finished 2nd. Within six weeks or so, I’d worked my way up to second in the UK rankings for my age group at the time. I then stuck with it and here I am today! Wow! Amazing work. So, have you had professional training to work your way up?

I’ve had three coaches in my career. My first coach was my club coach Billy, who initially sparked my interest in throwing and helped me in my first two years. Geoff Capes then coached me for 7 years, maybe more and my current coach Mike Winch has been coaching me for 4 years now. Mike has been really crucial to my recent progress and great results. Tell us more about your recent progress then. What have you been up to? So, in the last two years, I have had lots of breakthroughs. Last year in April, I went to the Commonwealth games where I threw a personal best of 17.76m to place 5th. This also put me top of the UK rankings for the remainder of the season. Later in the year, I went to the European championships in August where I finished 7th which was the best result by a British female shot putter in 60 years! This year,

Q&A WITH...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

I’ve been lucky enough to start of the season well, winning the British championships with a distance of 17.97m, which is the furthest throw of this century. This last weekend I went on to smash that distance with a personal best, world championship qualification mark and UK lead of 18.23m, which has now become the furthest throw this century. Wonderful. Sounds like you’re doing brilliantly. So, what’s next for you? This season the Work Champs is in September/ October, so between now and then it’s going to be training hard and making sure I’m sharp and ready for it. I hope to perform consistently for the rest of the year and maybe squeeze out the 18.50m needed for the Olympics 2020. We hope to see you achieving that too. Tell us what a typical training session involves. It very much depends on what my objectives at that time are. I train at Top Body, home of the Trench, for my strength training, which I undertake 4 times a week. All my other sessions are based around throwing or plyometrics, which are used to increase explosiveness in the muscles. Typically, I train 6 days a week twice a day.

Issue 74 2019

Do you have to have a certain diet as well to go alongside your training regime? I work with Jasmine Campbell, who is my nutritionist. She advises me on what I should eat and when. Being an athlete, you have to be pretty strict, but as a shot putter I have a bit more give as I have to be a little heavier to make the throw work! You sound incredibly dedicated. So, now you’ve made a name for yourself in shot putting, do you get recognised when you’re out and about? On the odd occasion, I get recognised locally, but it’s not often! Unfortunately shot putting is not a blue ribbon event so doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, at the same time I’m happy with that because I’m very happy with just getting on with it! Have you been lucky enough to meet any of your sporting heroes yet? Any stories to tell? I’ve been lucky enough to be on lots of teams with great sporting people such as Mo Farah, Jess Ennis and even Sir Bradley Wiggins at the Commonwealth games. Generally athletes are there to compete and perform, so no exciting stories unfortunately! I’m sure there’ll be lots more opportunities to meet more sporting legends in the future... for now though, know that many people in Norfolk see you as our very own shot putting legend. Thank you so much for the lovely chat! We hope there are lots of amazing things to come for you. No problem. Thank you very much.

Norwich City… Living the Dream with Passion? As a lifelong fan of Norwich City FC, my dream was always to have some involvement with club in whatever capacity I could. I was never going to play for them; I was never that good… in fact, a long way off. As a young lad, I used to stand on the open River End on the terraces. The first game I attended on my own (without the supervision of my parents) was an opening day fixture against Southampton in 1978; Norwich won 3-1, but I remember Southampton had my Norwich City

boyhood heroes playing for them that day in Ted MacDougal (who scored in that game) and Phil Boyer. It was always difficult getting to games living in Essex as I did then, and I was only 12. When I started attending games on a regular basis, I used to travel up the A140 and stood once again on the River End, which by now was an impressive 2 tier stand, but minus the seats (they came in the ‘90s). I always bought a programme and remember looking through at the local businesses who took an active role in sponsorship. I remember seeing Trevor

Putney, who was sponsored by a local Norwich estate agent, Bush Spelman. I was working for an estate agent in Essex in the late ‘80s, but I remember thinking I would love it if I could be involved with Norwich City and have my own company and see my company’s name in the programme. I held onto that dream for years. I eventually moved to Norwich in 1992 and then set up my own company in 1994. I was literally operating hand to mouth for the first 3 years making sure the business survived; there was no spare money for sponsorship of any kind, but I can assure you that the dream was still very much alive. In 1999, I remember speaking with Bryan Gunn, an absolute canary legend; he was the commercial manager at Norwich City at the time and I remember talking to him about kit sponsorship and who was available plus the costs involved. He suggested a young player by the name of Matt Joynson, who was a local lad, played full back and grew up in Wroxham. It didn’t take a lot of time and thought, so I agreed to sponsor him. Finally, I had realised my dream; Millbank Estate Agents were the official Norwich City FC kit sponsors of Matt Joynson. I couldn’t wait to get to the next home game and see my company in the programme and up in lights on the score board, “Matt Joynson, official kit sponsored by Millbank Estate Agents” so dreams can come true if you believe and work hard enough. Unfortunately, Matt was released at the end of the 2000 season and went onto to play local football for Wroxham and later on Diss Town. Over the 20 years I have been a player kit sponsor, I have had a variety of different players: Paul Dalglish followed Matt Joynson; I’ve had Carl Cort, Julian Brellier, Andy Hughes, Simon Charlton, Mark Rivers and Simeon Jackson. Simeon was great as I was sponsoring him that season when he hit the winning goal at

In more recent times, I have sponsored Declan Rudd, who is another local lad and rose through the Norwich City youth squad and now plays under former Norwich City boss Alex Neil at Preston North End. Prior to this season, I was sponsoring James Maddison who was voted player of the season and went on be Norwich City’s record transfer when he was sold to Leicester City in the summer last year. For the 2018/19 season, I asked if I could sponsor Emi Buendia. I had no idea at the time what kind of season he would have or even if he would be involved in the first team. The rest as they say is history and Emi went on this season to be very much part of Norwich City’s championship title winning team. Emi is a very likeable person and is very much the cornerstone of the team. An interesting stat is that Norwich City never won a match this season when he wasn’t on the pitch; that is how important Emi is to the team. So, I wonder who I will be sponsoring next season in the Premier League, it won’t be Emi but it will be someone… Article by Tony Beales owner of Millbanks Estate Agents. www.millbanks.com PAGE

Grant Holt Norwich City legend, Grant Holt, took time out of his busy schedule to chat to us about his book, his wrestling and his favourite colour. Firstly, we’d like to say a huge thank you for agreeing to be interviewed. We really appreciate you giving up your time. Tell us about your book then... what made you decide it was time to write one? I have been asked many times to do an autobiography, but I just kept on putting it off. Then I got approached by Norwich to do it. I have now retired and thought it was perfect timing to tell people about my amazing journey to the top of professional football. It hopefully will inspire a young Grant Holt out there to keep searching and working for his dream. What can we expect? Any revelations? It’s just an open and honest account of my highs and lows throughout my career. It’s got early

days as a kid to now with my fabulous family. I can’t give too much away as not released as yet. You will have to buy it to find out! So when is it released then? You can pre order now through Norwich City. It is in the shops from June 1st. We are doing a signing session, which will be announced very shortly. You had an amazing career with Norwich City spanning three football leagues. What was the highlight? The highlight is always the promotion! It doesn't matter what league you go to, it’s the same. The best thing was I done it with fantastic team mates and fans.

Thinking about the opposition, who was the most talented player you ever played against? And who was the player you dreaded the most? The best player I have played against was Gareth Bale. It was just before he left to go to Real Madrid. He was quick, strong and had excellent game awareness. The one I hated playing against was Ryan Shawcross as it was just a constant battle. Stoke were such a hard team to play against: big, strong and organised! What about your favourite fellow Norwich player? Who had the best banter? Who trained the hardest? The best in training was Russ Martin. He was always on training pitch last and in the gym. Best banter was probably Michael Nelson for me. I lived with him for 6 months - he’s so funny! You’ve tried your hand at wrestling. Is that where your future lies or do you have other plans? I’m doing it part time at the moment, but will see where it goes. I’m busy getting my football

knowledge working with Norwich at moment and really enjoying it. Sounds perfect! Now, we’d like to know if there’s any truth in what your wife, Fay, said in a previous issue of our magazine. What is your favourite colour? Ha! My favourite colour is green. But I must admit I have had so much pink round me that it’s my second favourite! Ha ha! Good to know. Final question then... it’s been an absolute pleasure chatting to you, Grant. Thank you so much for allowing us the opportunity. Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans across Norfolk? Keep supporting the club as always and on the ball city. Thanks again for taking the

All-New Mazda 3 2019 Reviewed

By motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay Twitter: @carwriteups | Instagram: @tbarnesclay The all-new Mazda3 is possibly the most attractive hatchback to arrive on these shores for some time. Just a couple of powerplants are on offer. There’s the SkyActiv-G petrol, tested here, and the SkyActiv-D diesel. The petrol unit is refined, and the gearbox, steering and chassis are sound. So, there is no doubt that the all-new Mazda3 is a superb family hatchback to drive. The inherent rigidity of the platform means that the car’s suspension doesn’t need to be unshakable for this to be a car you can push hard and confidently. It’s magnificently

composed - if maybe not as eager to turn in or as grippy as its rival - the Ford Focus. However, the Mazda always retains a first-rate ride quality. Given the limited torque dished up by the non-turbo engine, you need to stir the gears vigorously to keep the pace up. But the six-speed transmission is a delight to use, with a precise, short throw. Occasionally, the steering feels like it could be more animated, but by familyfocused hatchback standards, it's decent. The driving position is agreeably flexible, too. Whoever slips behind the wheel will be delighted, as should other occupants, given the classiness of the Mazda3’s interior. I tested the mid-spec Sport Lux variant, and although you will need to go up to GT Sport for leather-covered seats, the materials used around the cabin are clearly

of a good standard. It is a far more beautiful place to be than the Ford Focus and it possibly outshines the current VW Golf, too. Significantly, the Mazda gets a fresh infotainment system as well. The 8.8-inch screen is sharper than before and is controlled through a revolving dial. Navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are all on hand, as they are on every new Mazda3.

MOTORING REVIEW Issue 74 2019

So, there is no doubt that the all-new Mazda3 is a superb family hatchback to drive.

Indeed, every model is well kitted out for the money. Even the basic Mazda3 has LED lights and radar cruise control. And the shortcomings? Well, the Mazda3’s sporty sloping shape means room in the rear isn’t overwhelming - and it’s gloomy back there, as well. The width of the C-pillars means that rear visibility is limited and the 351-litre load area isn’t among the most voluminous in the class. But, overall, the all-new Mazda3 is an impressive, well-made machine that’s worth considering if you’re after a family car that stands out from other mainstream hatchbacks. LIVING WITH M.E

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 74 2019

Living With M.E.

M.E. (myalgic encephalomyelitis), sometimes known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), is a long-term condition which can affect anyone. Typical symptoms involve extreme tiredness, problems with sleep, pain in muscles and/or joints, headaches and brain “fog”. Diagnosis can be a challenging time for many sufferers with no specific test existing. Doctors work with their patients to determine the symptoms they have and usually rule out other conditions first. Living with M.E./CFS can be really difficult with others jumping to conclusions assuming they are “lazy” or simply “faking it”. Two ladies, both diagnosed with M.E., kindly share their experiences with us.

After being unwell with infections and extreme fatigue for over a year, I was diagnosed with M.E. at just 15. I knew nothing about what this diagnosis meant and I certainly didn’t think I would be battling the illness for a further 10 years of my life. One of the most frustrating aspects of M.E. is on the outside you look fine, no one can see anything physically wrong with you. However, I can explain it like having the flu, glandular fever and the worst hangover all at once. I was bed bound for 2 years of my life, in extreme pain and with no energy. On bad days,

I didn’t have enough energy to use a knife and fork to eat or to walk 5 steps up a flight of stairs. It feels strange and emotional to write that now, because today with a lot of hard work and soul searching, I no longer consider myself to have the illness. I am mum of 2, Oliver and Ruby, I run my own sleep coaching business and love being active. Although having said that, the biggest lesson I have taken from a 10 year journey of M.E., is that I have to spend my energy wisely and self-care is very important for me being happy and healthy. MY M.E EXPERIENCE

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 74 2019

My M.E. Experience At 18 years old, I was diagnosed with M.E. After numerous tests, it was a relief to know it wasn’t anything life threatening, but being told so young you have a chronic illness which will likely affect the rest of your life also isn’t something you want to hear either, especially being a person that is normally constantly on the go!

shower because I could not physically cope with both. On top of the unrelenting exhaustion, some of the things I was also trying to deal with were the sharp shooting pains in my head, wrists and hands, the constant nausea and also brain fog, which was so bad at times I could not remember how to put my shoes on or use a knife and fork!

M.E. is not about being lazy; most sufferers are the complete opposite, normally having pushed themselves so hard that their body just can’t cope anymore.

Luckily, at 18, I was still living at home with my parents, so I didn’t have any financial pressures to worry about and it also meant I had plenty of support from them and my boyfriend (who is now my husband) so I could concentrate on recovering. It would have been so easy at my lowest points to just give in to my symptoms and allow them to stop me living my life, but anyone who has met me knows I am pretty stubborn and I was determined to not let it beat me!

Extreme fatigue is a massive part of the illness, but there are also so many other symptoms to it; everyone suffers in their own way so each person’s experience of M.E. is different. At my worst, I could sleep for 20 hours in a day and would still feel so exhausted that I would have to make a decision whether to eat or take a

After trying various medications prescribed by the doctors for my symptoms, which just

MY M.E EXPERIENCE Issue 74 2019

gave me other side affects to deal with, I tried a holistic approach and I truly believe this is what allowed me to recover. Changing my diet, taking herbal supplements, doing gentle yoga and learning to listen to my body meant that each day I suffered a little less, but it wasn’t easy and I suffered many set backs. My M.E. seemed to work in cycles, so I would gradually improve over a few months and then I would crash down hard again, but in time, each time I crashed, it wasn’t as bad as the time before. When I felt ready, I started working, which was only for 2 hours a day, but slowly, I built up my hours and after 4-5 years successfully managed to have a life and job working 30 hours a week. Fast forward to 15 years later and I see myself as fully recovered, I am a mum to one strong willed little girl and heavily pregnant as I write this with my 2nd, I am also a successful business owner running Bop Tots Children’s Classes, which are very active not only for the children, but the adults too. I am well now, but I do still have to listen to my body to ensure I don’t relapse meaning M.E. does change your life forever. Saying that, it doesn’t have to define you as a person or the rest of your life, but I do see myself as one of the lucky ones because some M.E. suffers can suffer for 20 years and never get to a point of recovery that they can lead a normal life like me. Unfortunately, the world we live in now is that unless it is something obvious that people can see, they never seem to truly sympathise or even believe in illnesses like M.E., Fibromyalgia and Arthritis (just to name a few). For those who do suffer with these chronic illnesses being told they are lazy and it is all in their mind is something they will hear from others too often and this is not helpful! PAGE

Gluten Free, News To Me! This week, I got the results of a price 25p bag of penne pasta is now over £1) biopsy testing for Coeliac Disease. and I instantly panicked. The thought of adding A small envelope fell to the doormat. It was so thin in fact, that I didn’t believe that it could contain such life-altering news. Perhaps it’s just confirmation of another appointment I thought to myself… but no. I had already done some research and was feeling particularly sorry for myself when I received the confirmation. Tom tried in vain to cheer me. “It’s not too bad. It’s just bread and stuff. You can still have… oh no wait it’s in sausages, and pastry… oh and cakes”thank you, Tom! I then discovered that in our area they no longer prescribe gluten free items and you have to purchase them from the shop (my usual smart

even more spend to our ever-increasing food shop was quite alarming! Then I realised how awkward eating out and takeaways will now be. Perhaps the small list of items for me to choose from on the menu would help me decide my order quicker! A few phone calls to family, and a few hours for the news to digest and I started to look at the positives. There is legislation to help when eating out so restaurants can label menus clearly and there are so many Gluten free foods now that it will be so much easier than it would have been 10 years ago. Products now have to be labelled clearly with any allergens in bold. I am so much

more fortunate compared to some others who have allergies not an autoimmune disease. I feel I should raise awareness of Gluten allergies as there were so few symptoms that I had Coeliac Disease and I am almost 30! (however, I have since discovered it can develop at any age and the most common age for it to be diagnosed is between 40 and 60). From about 12 years of age, I had bloating when eating, but this didn’t follow any pattern, even if eating the same meals. One time I would be fine and the next I would bloat and my stomach would cramp.

Issue 74 2019

The symptoms of coeliac include but are not limited to (and may not all be present): • Headaches • Sudden or unexpected weight Loss • Abdominal pain or bloating • Extreme tiredness which may be a sign of an Iron, vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency • Mouth ulcers • An itchy rash

At 14, I was diagnosed with IBS and told to take Buscopan, bought over the counter and that was it. I had no weight loss which is a sign of Coeliac Disease, and no other symptoms. 2 years ago I became very tired to the point I couldn’t lift my hairdryer to dry my hair one morning and last summer began to just not feel ‘right’ so I went to the GP who took bloods and found that I had symptoms of hyperthyroidism and so I was referred to the hospital for more tests.

• Tingling or numbness in hands and/ or feet or swelling of the hands and feet

These tests showed my thyroid levels continuing to decline to near the normal range but the bloods showed a reading of 21 which is more than double the high end of normal for a possible Gluten allergy.

This is all extremely new to me, and I would love to hear any tips, tricks and hacks for cutting out gluten!

Had I not have listened to my body and sought additional support when I didn’t feel right, I would not have known and continued to think I had IBS, potentially causing more damage to my gut and increasing my chances of bowel cancer, infertility, anaemia and osteoporosis.

Can you buy gluten free products in large quantities? Is there a restaurant you know that is particularly accommodating?

HOW HERBS CAN HELP

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 74 2019

How Herbs Can Help Balance Mind And Body We all know from experience that days, months or even years, it can put a strain on there is an intimate link between our body and put our health at risk. mind and body. Fortunately, the world of herbs can help! When we feel poorly or uncomfortable, it affects how we think and feel, while every thought and emotion has an effect on our physical state. Negative thoughts sap our energy and reduce our resistance whereas happiness and positivity create health and vibrancy. Stress is part of our everyday lives. When we feel emotions such as anxiety, distress or anger, we can experience physical symptoms: our heart rate increases, we breathe faster and our muscles tense up. If this response to stress continues for

There are herbs which can lift the spirits, calm anxiety, relax muscles, increase memory and concentration and aid sleep. Some herbs, known as adaptogens, can improve energy and vitality and enhance our resilience to stress; there are even herbs for a broken heart and low self-esteem! Calming herbs include passionflower, California poppy, wild lettuce, skullcap and wild oats. You may even find some help for your stress among the herbs growing in your garden, such

as chamomile, lemon balm, vervain, rose, lime flower, hops, lavender, thyme and rosemary. To soothe anxiety and ease muscle tension, you could also add any of these herbs to the bath or have a massage using essential oils of holy basil, nutmeg, lavender, rosemary, rose or chamomile in a base of sesame oil. If you need herbs to strengthen your nerves and increase your resilience to stress, you could try Siberian ginseng, ashwagandha, gotu kola, liquorice or holy basil. Recent research on the bacterial population of the gut (gut microbiota) has shown that the there is a close relationship between the bacteria in our gut and our nervous system. There is a two-way process, meaning that our state of mind can affect the microbiota and these in turn can influence the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and GABA, affecting our behaviour and mood. So, paying attention to the balance of the gut microbiota may be a great strategy for treating problems of the nervous system. Fortunately, there are many common herbs and spices that can help combat disturbances of the gut flora. These include cat’s claw, garlic, burdock, golden seal, olive leaf, dill, calendula, echinacea, fennel and reishi mushroom.

increases GABA levels This is why a cup of tea can be calming and comforting while coffee can cause a host of nervous problems! Herbs are best combined with good digestion, healthy eating, stress reduction therapies such as massage, yoga, breathing exercises, meditation and non-competitive exercise. Together they can radically transform our mental and emotional state. Vitamins B, C, and E, calcium magnesium, zinc and essential fatty acids are all essential to support the nervous system and may need to be increased in times of stress when the body’s uptake of these can increase dramatically. Foods devoid of nutrients such as refined carbohydrates, sugar and junk foods can result in deficiencies of vital nutrients, and are best avoided completely to optimise your resilience. So even though stress is a part of everyday life, by taking good care of ourselves and using supportive herbs on a regular basis, we may begin to see stress in a different light, perhaps as a learning experience and even embrace it as a natural part of being human.

Spices including turmeric, cinnamon, ginger and long pepper stimulate the flow of digestive enzymes, improving digestion and absorption and reducing fermentation in the gut. Aloe vera juice is soothing, immune enhancing and helps balance gut bacteria. GABA is a neurotransmitter which can help reduce anxiety and stress. Several herbs increase GABA including valerian, lemon balm, skullcap and Baikal skullcap, ashwagandha, lavender and chamomile. Caffeine inhibits GABA release, while theanine, an amino acid found in tea,

TAKE THE STRESS

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 74 2019

Take The Stress Out Of Stress How would it be if you awoke every day feeling refreshed and confident about the day ahead, with enough energy and resilience in reserve to tackle whatever might be thrown your way? Yes, unexpected challenges crop up from time to time, but how would it be, if in the main, you knew yourself well enough to be able to manage stress, cope well and have some time for yourself, including breaks for those important people and things in your life? In a busy life, we often focus on work, letting home, friends and outside interests take care of themselves. But often personal areas will stay quiet, gently fading into the background, not wanting to force us to choose or add to our stress. At some point, the realisation hits us. Friends and family don't include us anymore. They are living their lives without us. It may take a while for us to notice, but it's not an uncommon situation. Some stress is good for us. It keeps us on our toes, helps us think outside the box, come up with new ideas, deliver more than we thought we could. But continual stress is counterproductive and can cause many issues and

ailments over time. There are a documented 360 physical symptoms of stress and you may be working your way through them all! At first the occasional, symptom may go unnoticed or be explained away. The intermittent headaches, sleepless nights, irritability, disappearing sense of humour, poor concentration can be explained away through being busy and overloaded. You may have a stressful period at work, problems at home, health-related concerns, things on your mind. But, if they continue unabated or start to escalate, it may be time to address what's going on, what the root cause or trigger is to these changes in your equilibrium. Ignored, things often continue until you can't discount or brush them aside any more. The continual drips can escalate into an overflow which starts to impact and affect every area of your life. Starting to take responsibility and own how you're feeling, the way you're living your life is an important first step to manage stress. When we acknowledge our responses, recognise that we need to take control and then start to do so, we become more able to move to a better place both mentally and physically.

TAKE THE STRESS

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Why not manage stress by selecting 3 of these items to action in the next 48 hours? 1. Outsource tasks that are not in your area of expertise. Hiring someone to manage your accounts, PR, advertising could be money well spent and free you to focus on your main business. Maybe hire someone to do your domestic chores, your cleaning, ironing, gardening and use that free time to do something for yourself. 2. Share with family. Your partner often wants to be there for you. Discuss what you're going through and let them be supportive. Even children can have tasks that are their responsibility, maybe setting the table or loading the dishwasher. Communicate and ask for help. 3. Ensure you have family time by sitting and eating together, even if it's just once a week. Keep two-way channels of communication open, so it's not all about you. Be interested in what's going on in their lives and remember what you've been told so you can follow-up again. 4. Turn off technology at a set time in the evenings, unless there's an occasional emergency that needs your attention. Allow yourself to switch off, preferably for a couple of hours before bed. If you commit to specific time slots each day to go online, you'll avoid wasting time by constantly checking. You'll have more free time and be able to invest genuine attention in your real relationships.

Issue 74 2019

5. Treat sleep as important. Stress and sleep-related issues cost UK businesses ÂŁ40 billion last year, or the equivalent of 200,000 days' lost productivity, due to accidents, absenteeism and poor performance. Prepare to sleep well by winding down for an hour or two before bed. Avoid that heavy conversation last thing at night, plan for the next day by making a list of impending tasks, maybe have your clothes ready, the children's lunches packed. 6. Try to maintain a regular routine, a relaxing bath or shower to wash away the day's cares. If you have a busy physical job, try to introduce balance with mentally challenging interests like quizzes, puzzles, interesting conversations, or mentally demanding work might be balanced by scheduling physical activity like the gym or a walk. 7. It can be fun to regularly get outside and maybe share that time with family by taking a walk, game of football, playing together. 8. Reward each stage of your journey with treats, me time and self-praise. Trying deserves recognition, even if things don't work out how you'd hoped. 9. Commit to ongoing training, learning, developing, improvement. Keep your brain active so that you're engaged and stimulated. Stress is a fact of everyday life, but by incorporating a few basic steps you can implement effective ways to take the stress out of stress!

Are You Running On Empty? Top Wellbeing Hacks To Fill Your Cup Stressed, anxious, running from one thing to the next, no time to relax, broken sleep, ever demanding work hours, family commitments… sound familiar?

activities that don’t take up much time that can fill our cup. Fill our levels back up so we can cope with the demands of life; it doesn’t have to be this way.

According to the mental health foundation in December 2018, there were 10.3 million people experiencing anxiety in the UK (Office of National Statistics) and this figure doesn’t look set to improve with not much change since 2013.

See the thing is, our brains have not changed much since caveman times. We are naturally wired to the negative and that is to protect us from harm. Find the negative in our environment, focus on it and it’s a threat and look at ways to fix it so we are safe again.

A lot of us are feeling like we are running on empty and with time poor lifestyles, reduced leisure time and no time to relax it feels like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. But there are some things we can do, small

Then there is the fight or flight mechanism at play, get us ready to fight or flight with or from the ‘threat’ we are facing. Our bodies are protecting us and keeping us safe. But the thing is, the types of things nowadays that cause us

We are naturally wired to the negative and that is to protect us from harm.

stress and anxiety are not usually the sort of things that we need to fight or run away from. Perhaps we are stressed about a work meeting, our bodies think there is a threat such as a tiger attacking us and our brains shut down getting us ready to fight or run away. What we actually need in those situations is the opposite, logical thinking and fuel in the tank that is our brains. The good news is there is a way forward with this, there are ways to hack this historical bias which is preventing us from living the best version of our lives.

The reason the activities work is because they create positive emotion (happiness!) and this fuels our brains helping them overcome the negativity bias which is fuelling our stress and anxiety. Mindfulness helps by growing areas of the brain responsible for emotion regulation and shrinking down the areas responsible for fight and flight, making us less reactive.

It all starts with simple activities such as just a few minutes of mindfulness a day or happiness habits such as writing down every day what you’re grateful for. These may sound simple but have found to create dramatic effects in the brain, giving the brain more fuel.

As well as growing the useful logical areas of the brain, giving them fuel! I’ve seen some dramatic shifts in the wellbeing of my 8 weeks of Mindfulness course participants, they have created habits for life over the 8 weeks with some simple exercises.

In my 21 days of Happiness programme, I have found doing activities like these for 21 days can make a huge difference to people’s daily lives. SShawn Achor, Happiness researcher, says from his research on these activities, ‘Your brain at positive is 31% more productive than your brain at negative, neutral or stressed’.

So, what could you do to fill your cup? Even just 10 minutes of Mindfulness a day can make a huge difference! I would be honoured to help you fill your cup, you can reach me here: Gemma Sandwell - Mindfulness Teacher and Chief Happiness Officer Visit: www.thehappinessbranch.com Facebook and Instagram: The Happiness Branch Twitter: @happybranchhq

SOULSHINE

Issue 74 2019

SoulShine SoulShine is a social enterprise based in Norfolk that aims to empower people in their relationship with food, body and themselves. The SoulShine team are on a mission to create a supportive and holistic Body Positive Community. Continue reading to find out how to embrace more Body Positivity in your life and create a more empowered body image. 1. Dance and let it all jiggle. Move in a way that feels GOOD for you. Trying to forget about what burns the most calories, instead focus on what makes you feel ALIVE and FREE? When do you feel most confident? I feel freest and my most true self when I’m dancing to my favourite music. 2. Thank Your Body for all the things it does for you every second of every day. While you are reading this, your heart is pumping, your lungs are breathing, your digestive system is working to turn the food you ate earlier into energy, your cells are being healed and renewed. There are thousands of biochemical reactions happening

that we have no say in; our body does that on its own. Let’s thank it for what it does and allows us to do instead of criticising it for not looking how we think we “should” look. We will be hosting a Thank You Body Festival on July the 12th at the Forum in Norwich from 10am - 4pm full of fun and inspiring talks, stories and exhibitions to celebrate everybody. 3. Become aware of the language you use. Both talking to yourself and other people. Notice how “normal” it is in our culture to criticise one’s body, punish it, restrict it, and talk about how “naughty” we are when we have a slice of cake. Moralising food is a huge part of our diminished self-worth and negative body image culture. Set the intention to no longer join the self-depricating and self-scrutinizing party.

that’s what makes this world so special. Take time to celebrate those around you too. When you recognise beauty in others, it means you have that within you as well. Celebrate and rejoice in your successes and the successes of the people you love. 7. Join the Body Positive Community. Find a meetup or a group in your local area with kind and supportive people, that doesn’t involve counting calories or body shaming. We hold regular confidence building workshops, empowering photo shoots and deliver 1-1 coaching sessions in and around Norwich. 4. Diversify your social media feed. All day every day, we are bombarded with images from different kind of screens. Much of the time, images that have been edited and tampered with. Taking control of what we are seeing can drastically improve our mental health and wellbeing. Choosing to see more body diversity and venturing out of the mainstream media will not only allow your brain to create new neural pathways and create a new “normal” but you will feel more uplifted and at peace with yourself. I would highly recommend filling your feed with authentic and inspiring people such as: @bodyposipanda @bopo.boy @scarrednotscared. 5. Read life-changing books like Body Positive Power by Megan Jayne Crabbe. This is a must read for anyone looking to empower themselves in their relationship with their body and food. Other books include: Rising Strong by Brene Brown and #EmergingProud through disordered eating, body image and low selfesteem which we will be releasing later this year. 6. Celebrate yourself and others. Do you constantly compare yourself to other people? There is no one else in the world that is you, has your body or your amazing gifts. It’s time to start celebrating who you are and what you have been given. EveryBody is different and

8. Get involved in a Body Positive photo shoot. Come and join us for an empowering and fun filled day to boost your confidence and connect with amazing women. With these magical days, we want to prove that it doesn’t matter what shape or size you are, moments of deep empowerment and true beauty are able to shine when we are able to drop all our limiting beliefs and the shame we carry around with us all the time. This is a time to say goodbye to that little voice that says: “you’re not x enough, you’re too x, you can’t possibly have your photo taken!” The next dates for our Wild Woman photo shoots are: 11th of August and 15th of September. Low Maintenance Ways To Look And Feel Your Best This Spring/ Summer, With Just Hollie Hi! Please let me introduce myself, my name is Hollie and I am Iceni’s new monthly columnist and will be bringing you all things healthy body and mind, with a little bit of delicious plant based food thrown in too. This month, I wanted to focus on ways you can look and feel your best as the temperatures rise, as this can be a tricky time in personal grooming. Heat = humidity, sweat and less layers! It can be a great time to embrace the ‘natural you’, because who wants to be stuck indoors spending hours on a beauty routine when there is fun to be had in the sun!

Natural hair, don’t care: When the weather hots up, it is pointless trying to tame your tresses with straighteners to make it sleek or blow dry your hair to dizzy heights just for it to fall flat again when you get outside in the elements. The best thing to do is to go with nature and embrace whatever you are blessed with. Personally, I have slightly wavy hair, so I use salt spray; spritzing my hair all over after air drying it and scrunching the spray in creating a beachy, laid back look. If you have poker straight hair, why not use accessories such as a headband/ turban to add interest to your summer look,

making otherwise flat and lifeless hair look stylish and interesting? There are loads of great hair accessories on the high street at the moment; Primark have a brilliant cost effective selection. Whatever your hair type, there will be something you can do to make the best of it in the heat and not spend all day fighting nature more time for cocktails and picnics!

Deodorant, not just for underarms!

Semi-permanent makeup: I have recently had my brows ‘tattooed’ in preparation for summer this year, favouring the more popular bold brow look, but unfortunately myself having blonde hair. In the colder months, I use mainly Benefit Cosmetics brow products to create the naturally fuller brow but, in the summer, it doesn’t take much sunshine for my makeup to start running and my brow secrets to be revealed! Microblading, powder brows, micropigmentation, semi-permanent makeup whatever method you choose to have (it differs from salon to salon, so do your research) it will mean you can be confident that your beautiful eyebrows which frame your face will look spot on whatever you get up to. Just be sure to use a good sunscreen after the treatment to keep them looking fresh for as long as possible and if you’re going on holiday leave plenty of time after having them done to heal properly before you go. I went to Norwich Face and Body Clinic, Bridewell Alley, and found them to be professional and informative throughout. Deodorant, not just for underarms: Bear with me on this one as it is slightly TMI but - I use roll on deodorant under my chest to stop sweat patches there in the real hot weather and between my thighs to stop ‘chub rub’. If these things aren’t a problem for you then you are lucky but personally, I’ve found them to be embarrassing problems that a lot of women get in the summer but rarely speak

about. Personally, I prefer a roll-on deodorant as they’re better for the environment and I find they work better, especially on the inner thighs if you’re going for a lovely stroll this season. Just a little hack to make life in the heat more bearable! Finally, make sure you always use at least factor 30 in the summer months, drink at least two litres of water a day and protect your scalp from burning by wearing a hat or headscarf. I KNOW you already know these things but, how many of you actually do them? Until next time, Just Hollie Visit: justhollieblog.com Follow On Instagram: www.instagram.com/justhollieblog

perfect for pre-party preparations and has zero downtime.

With the world gone social media mad, it's no wonder the strive for the perfect selfie means more and more people investing time and good money to achieve this.

Million Dollar Facial A luxurious facial where science meets indulgence. Working the skin from the outside in, this treatment has been designed to deeply exfoliate, polish skin, flush out toxins, increase and stimulate college and cell turnover. Targets everything from fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, dull skin, acne scarring and puffiness. A course of 4-6 is highly recommended.

Gone are the simple facials and skincare regimes as clients want more and better results from these treatments for the price tag they pay. It can become a mine field when trying to keep up with what's the hottest treatment to have is and what exactly to expect from these treatments. It's important to know what you want to achieve and what is actually being done to your skin. It doesn't just stop at the skin, brows and lashes, treatments have stepped up their game. I began my training in Dublin where I grew up, specialising in skincare, lashes and brows. If I’m not preening and pruning away in The Space at StandenMay, it's because I'm busy trialling the latest craze in the industry. Dermaplaning This facial suits all and is a brilliant introduction to a more aesthetic approach to facials. A noninvasive exfoliation treatment that uses a small scalpel to remove the top layer of skin along with any fine hairs to reveal flawlessly smooth skin. Skin Peels A lot of people never try a skin peel because they are afraid their skin will look burnt and peel. This is the effect of a chemical peel not an acid peel which uses natural fruit acid to eat up all dead skin on the surface. Sometimes, during these peels, the skin goes a little red while the peel is on the skin, but quickly fades. With the benefit of my LED Light Therapy Mask there is little to no down time. Each client will receive the peel that is perfect for their skin’s need after careful assessment of skin. A light peel can give you beautiful glowing skin. It treats clogged pores, acne, pigmentations to reveal healthy clear skin. A course of 3 peels is recommended.

Ultimate Breakout Blitz With the power of our High Frequency machine breakouts become a past problem. This facial kills bacteria, reduces redness, heals inflammation and combats acne. We begin with a double Cleanse then a quick peel onto the high frequency machine. Finished with a sebum control mask and our blue LED Light Therapy Mask. A course of 4-6 is recommended.

LVL Lashes Also dubbed the Botox for lashes, this treatment is so much more then your average lash perm. LVL which stands for length, volume and lift it promises to transform your natural lashes and giving the eye area a complete lift.

All Treatments and many more available with myself Wednesday and Fridays at Standenmay Salon and at private residence at Wymondham (subject to availability).

Using beneficial and conditioning series of serums the treatment gives you longer more lifted lashes without the need of false lashes and harsh adhesives. Every LVL treatment has a free lash tint included and last for 6-8 weeks. No more worrying about mascara running while pool side.

TOP TIPS FOR FEELING ...

Issue 74 2019

Top Tips For Feeling Beautiful And Being Healthy, Without Pills And Potions! Simone is a Health & Vitality Coach, supporting her clients to cut through the confusion and mis-information around mental and physical wellbeing and create their own path to reclaim health, in their own time, without having to struggle alone so they can move beyond daily struggles of “fine” and instead live, look and feel Fabulous. The beauty industry is a multi-billion £ industry. It seems everyone wants to defy – or better yet reverse - the ageing process and many will go to any length and pay any amount! Rather than opting for the use of toxins, expensive potions, or even surgery, each of us has the power to make a real and positive difference to how we look and feel, every day, that doesn’t require huge expenditure nor radical procedures. Here are just four of them…. It begins with acceptance. As a child, we would look in wonder in the mirror, amazed at what we saw! Yet as the years tick over, that wonder can turn to criticism the focus is automatically the flaws. Borne of life’s

experiences as well as simply living in our age of compulsive comparison and “tall poppiness”, the harsh approach is often explainable. But it doesn’t need to be terminal. Today is the day to find a mirror and start seeing the beauty in you! When you look for the beauty - in the mirror and in life - you find it! And you’ll see more! (We find what we focus on, right?!) It’s time to give up the self-criticism, accept yourself just as you are, make plans to improve what you can, if you wish, stop comparing yourself to everyone else and simply get on and be You! Sounds simple. Start with 3 a day. Once the self-acceptance journey begins in earnest, it’s wonderfully transformative! You can instantly look more beautiful, if you just give you a chance! The second thing you can do to turn back visible signs of ageing is drink! Oh, no, no, this doesn’t mean gin enough to turn your vision blurry! This refers simply to drinking more water. A properly hydrated skin is literally plumper and happier looking, showing fewer wrinkles and it looks, well, healthy! When you wake, opt for a big glass of water - yes, with lemon if you fancy - and then sip throughout the day. Aim for a

litre and a half and finish drinking by 8pm so your bladder doesn’t call you in the middle of the night. A tip - set an alarm on your phone to remind you to sip until your new refreshing habit is established. You will feel so much better, with more energy, a clearer brain, better digestion, your skin will appear smoother, fresher and younger and your eyes will sparkle... people will wonder what you’ve been up to! Another step in a self-guided beauty routine - your quest to turn back the signs of time - is sleep! Simply, get more sleep! On average, we humans need eight to nine hours a night. Sound sleep is restful for your body and restorative for your energy supplies. And a lack of sleep can really show on your face, but also in your demeanour and moods. By prioritising your sleep with a routine and bedtime, you are more likely to look and feel better, fresher and have way more energy. By ensuring your bedroom is dark and quiet, electronics are left in another room and wind-down techniques like a bath or reading a few pages (of a book not an ipad or kindle) are employed, sound sleep becomes

Issue 74 2019

possible. A tip to elevate melatonin levels and bring on sound sleep is to enjoy 1/4 cup tart cherry juice 3/4 hr before bed. Lastly, you can eat for beauty! Lemon in the water is just the start. Not only does this powerful citrus kick start your digestion and cleanse your liver and kidneys the fresh supply of Vitamin C supports skin lustre and health. Our supply of this particular vitamin comes from fresh fruit and vegetables, so think strawberries, pomegranate, mango, pineapple, broccoli, cauliflower and red and green peppers. And more. Adequate supplies of vitamin C in our daily diet supports our immune system, detoxification processes as well as fighting inflammation in our body. As well, and more importantly in the context of beauty and skin health, adequate supplies of vitamin C ensures the body can make and store collagen which is the “plumpness” in your skin. Collagen levels naturally decline as we age but by eating a diet including an array of whole and colourful foods, and minimising processed foods, you give your body (and face) the very best chance to look and feel fabulous. Every day, your choices can support or hinder your feelings of beauty, happiness and health. They are inter-twined. I like to think of our “beauty routine” as our “being routine”. With mindful consideration we can move from looking and feeling fine, to living, looking and feeling Fabulous. It’s a matter of prioritising you and making real health, simple. Is it time to take a new more confident approach to your wellbeing? If you’d like support to take control of how you look and feel and regain calm control and balance in your health and life, you can contact Simone on: +44 7824 644 323 or email: simone@simonegilbert.com For more information visit: www.simonegilbert.com

#MissySays Be Nice To Your Nails

As a nail technician, the best part about my job is helping clients to love their nails!

2) Always wear gloves whenever you are using chemicals or anything that can stain or weaken your nails or skin.

Whilst I’m well known for creating mini works of nail art, what’s most important for me is that my clients know how to maintain their manicure to protect their natural nails.

3) DON’T pick, pull, bite, or chew your nails.

The following tips are worth taking note of, whether you prefer your nails naked or dressed up! Missy’s Top 5 tips for healthy Tips! 1) Cuticle oil is a must and should be applied twice a day, massaging into each finger around the cuticle, side walls, fingertip and the nail. This will increase circulation encouraging healthy, new nail growth and reduce the appearance of dry, cracked skin. It will also help to protect the nail and skin against trauma and keep your manicure looking good for longer.

4) Always carry a nail file with you. A small split or chip can easily be filed away and save the rest of your nail. It also stops the temptation to pick or pull at your nails if you snag one. 5) Most importantly, remember your nails are jewels NOT tools! Whenever you find yourself using your nails, adapt and find another method, for example you can use a spoon to open ring pulls. This leads to a common question I’m asked, “Do enhancements ruin your nails?” Providing your service is carried out by a fully qualified, competent nail technician,

using regulated products AND you adhere to all aftercare advice, then the answer is “NO”. If you’re ever in doubt about a tech’s qualifications, don’t be afraid to ask to see their certificates. Ultimately, you need to feel comfortable throughout your service as this can take anywhere from 1-3 hours, so make sure you find the best tech for you! So, you’ve found your technician, now what to have done? I always greet new clients with an initial consultation to understand their lifestyle, ascertain their nail type, and discuss which service is most suited to them. Here’s a brief description of the core services you will find readily available in most salons: Gel Polish: a two week, chip resistant polish that flexes with the nail and feels lightweight. Professional removal required. Acrylic: this can be used as an overlay under gel polish to add strength as well as being used to extend the natural nail. It’s the strongest system on offer but not the best choice for thin, weak nails. Maintenance or removal should take place every 2-3 weeks. Hard Gel: this can be used in the same way as acrylic and likewise it needs maintaining or removing every 2-3 weeks. It’s a great option

for those with weaker nails and still a very strong product. What’s trending this summer? Once you have chosen your system, it’s all about the design and colour! If you’re after an on trend set, then you’ll be wanting neons, corals and animal prints this summer. You may also want to consider your skin tone? Cooler skin tones best suit blues, pinks and greys, whereas warmer skin tones are great for reds, creams, and golds. But my advice is to wear what you love, whether you want your nails to make a statement, co-ordinate with your wardrobe or express your personality, just have fun and be your own kind of beautiful!
