Welcome To Iceni Magazine, “August rain: the best of the summer gone, and the new fall not yet born. The odd uneven time.” Sylvia Plath Issue 76 is upon us already. Flight for Youth is our flagship 25th anniversary celebration featuring our much-loved and well-recognised butterfly. Thank you to everybody who has got involved by purchasing a glazed pottery butterfly or by painting their own – we’re enjoying seeing such brilliant creations! We’re pleased to announce that the displays of butterflies are now open to view at Norwich’s Assembly House and The Walled Garden at Holkham Hall.

The Benjamin Foundation Special Projects and Events Manager, Colin Lang, says: “Our charity’s 25th anniversary presented a wonderful opportunity to create even more awareness of the work we do in the region, as well as generate much-needed funds to see our charity into another quarter century. We also wanted any celebrations to be inclusive and family friendly and we think the displays do just that.”

Colin continues: “We warmly encourage visitors to come and enjoy the display of butterflies in Holkham and at The Assembly House. In addition, you can get involved and support the charity by purchasing a glazed butterfly which will be available after the installations are dismantled in September. Preventing Youth Homelessness We want to end youth homelessness and we’re tackling the problem locally by providing a home and support to over 100 vulnerable young people every night. We’re helping young people like James* who, aged 17, has lived at one of our local accommodation centres since September 2018 following a breakdown in family relationships. It’s been a difficult time for him but living at our accommodation centre, which is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, has given him some much-needed stability. The support of our team is helping him to take the next, positive step in his progression towards independence. *Names have been changed

If you’re feeling inspired to support our work to prevent local youth homelessness, why not register for Sleep Out 2019? Our annual fundraising event invites people to spend one night outside so young people like James don’t have to.

Award-Winning Musical Kinky Boots Set To Wow Historic Shoe-Making Centre

KINKY BOOTS September 17-28, 2019

Inspired by the true story of a shoe factory, Kinky Boots, the winner of every major Best Musical award, is set to wow audiences in Norwich, a city that was once the centre of a large shoe manufacturing industry. Kinky Boots takes audiences from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Factory owner, Charlie Price, is struggling to live up to his father’s expectations and continue the family footwear business of Price & Son. With the factory’s

future hanging in the balance, help arrives in the unlikely but spectacular form of Lola, a fabulous performer in need of some sturdy new stilettos. The story will have particular resonance for audiences when it arrives at Norwich Theatre Royal from September 17-28. For more than 200 years, Norwich was one of the foremost shoe manufacturing cities in the country, with only London, Leicester and Northampton producing more footwear. It employed 12,000 people in around 30 factories,

mainly making women’s and children’s shoes for famous brands such as Start-rite, Van Dal, Norvic and Bally.

The musical Kinky Boots was inspired by a 2005 comedy-drama film of the same name, and the show premiered in Chicago in 2012, making its Broadway debut in 2013 and opening at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End where it became a favourite with UK theatregoers.

The UK tour opened at the Royal & Derngate theatre in Northampton on 19 September 2018, returning to the home of this heart-warming British story, whilst after three years and over 1,400 performances, the West End production ended its run at the Adelphi Theatre in January this year.

It has won three Olivier Awards for Best New Musical, Best Costume Design and Best Actor in a Musical for Matt Henry who played central character Lola. Kinky Boots also won the London Evening Standard BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical as well as three WhatsOnStage Awards for Best New Musical, Best Actor in a Musical and Best Choreography. The book for the show was created by fourtime Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles), while the music and lyrics were written by American singer/ songwriter and actress Cyndi Lauper whose 1980 albums included hugely successful hits such as Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Time After Time and True Colours.

Judy Foster, of Norwich Theatre Royal, said: “This dynamic musical is full of heart with a very real story at its centre. It will certainly appeal to all ages for its tale of an unlikely friendship between two very different people and their fight to revitalise a failing business and save the livelihoods of the factory workers. Plus there are echoes of Norwich’s past as its own shoe industry contracted in the face of stiffer competition from overseas - and of course, there is a good dollop of glitz and glamour as well with those towering heels.”

Direction and choreography is by by twotime Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde, Hairspray). Kinky Boots is produced by Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig and Playful Productions, in association with Cameron Mackintosh Kayi Ushe, who is playing the role of Lola on tour, has starred in multiple West End theatre productions including Motown the Musical, The Book of Mormon and Crazy for You; while Paula Lane, best known for her role as Kylie Platt in Coronation Street (and also Anna Copping in Doctors, Wendy Kelshaw in Heartbeat and Geraldine in The Royal), will play Lauren and Joel Harper-Jackson, whose theatre credits include Mr Thompson in The Curious Incident

SLADE Are Back On The Road With A December 2019 - UK Tour Playing NORWICH - Waterfront On Saturday 7th December! SLADE - Without doubt one of the most exciting bands to come out of Great Britain in the past 50 years. Norfolk Gardens Open In August 2019 August is the month of summer and school holidays, and time to enjoy a perfect day out with the family by visiting some beautiful gardens and open spaces. The majority of gardens that open for the National Garden Scheme in Norfolk are familyfriendly, and, of course, children go free. There are eight beautiful gardens, including four in and around Norwich, which are awaiting your visit this month. The Long Barn in Newton Flotman boasts a new ha-ha this year creating infinity views across ancient parkland. The garden has strong Mediterranean influences throughout demonstrated by a walled group of four venerably gnarled olive trees. There are herbaceous borders, tiered lawns a woodland garden, and walks down to a stretch of the River Tas. North Lodge, Bowthorpe Road, Norwich, is a charming town garden surrounding a Victorian Gothic Cemetery Lodge. The quirky garden is

home to a classical temple, Gothic conservatory, Chinese-style veranda, oriental water garden and ponds. The planting in this fifth of an acre triangular plot is predominantly herbaceous with an interesting collection of carnivorous plants and succulents. Brick Kiln House, Shotesham, is a two-acre country garden with a large terrace, lawns and colourful herbaceous borders. There is an intimate rose garden, garden sculptures and a stream running through diversely planted woodland. 33 Waldemar Avenue, Hellesdon is a large suburban garden with a mix of exotic and tropical plants combined with unusual perennials. A palm-thatched Tiki hut is an interesting feature and the pond is home to wildlife and rare plants. A large collection of succulents will be on show and there will be plants available to buy. Highfield House, Castle Acre has evolved over 36 years, and was originally created from a farmers field. The ž acre garden is planted

for year-round interest with large herbaceous borders showing off late summer colour and a lawn sloping down to a planted bog garden, pond and summerhouse. This garden opens in conjunction with…. Tudor Lodgings, Castle Acre is a two-acre garden that incorporates Norman defensive earthworks. The garden has a C18 dovecote, abstract topiary, ornamental grasses, hot herbaceous border, and a knot garden designed in the style of a ‘Mondrian’ painting. Adjacent to a fruit cage and flower cutting garden is a natural wild area with a large pond and flower meadow and where bantams and ducks roam free. New this year is Richard the Rhea, who lives in the paddock. All the open gardens will be serving home-made cake, and tea and coffee. Entry for children is free, but please check the website for garden entry fees, wheelchair access and whether the garden is dog friendly. If you have not yet got your free booklet listing all the 2019 National Garden Scheme ‘Gardens to Visit’ then you can find one at your local library, garden centre or tourist information centre. Norwich Playhouse Announces An Extraordinary And Exciting New Season Of Shows For Autumn 2019

Including comedy from Ed Gamble, Flo & Joan, Andy Parsons & Count Arthur Strong, a contemporary production of Othello set in the Jazz-age, children’s picture-book favourites transformed for the stage, a comedy show from She Go of Nimmo Twins fame, and A Circus Carol from Lost in Translation Circus. With over 50 shows and 120 performances, the Playhouse’s Autumn Season truly has something for everybody. Running from September 2019 to January 2020, these fabulous productions are sure to brighten the winter months. She will be signing books afterwards. Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s bestselling love story The Scarecrows’ Wedding (Tue 19 - Sun 24 Nov) is an unmissable production filled with live music and plenty of fun. Beautiful and enchanting dance theatre comes to the Playhouse with Arthur Pita’s The Little Match Girl (Wed 27 - Sat 30 Nov) in this rave-reviewed family dance piece based on the haunting Hans Christian Andersen fairy-tale. This Christmas, we’ll be revelling with a new version of Dicken’s A Christmas Carol from local stars Lost In Translation: A Circus Carol (Wed 11 - Sat 21 Nov). This is a new coproduction between Lost In Translation Circus, Norwich Playhouse, and Norwich Theatre Royal. Filled with thrills, spills and plenty of festive spirit, this acrobatic spectacular is not to be missed! MUSIC Enjoy the splendid acoustics in the Playhouse auditorium with some stunning music, and celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Dylan’s famous Isle of Wight show with The Bob Dylan Story (Fri 20 Sept). Jazz icons The Ronnie Scott’s All Stars (Fri 4 Oct) share tales of the venue’s history through stunning music in a sixtieth anniversary concert, The Simon & Garfunkel Story (Fri 25 Oct & Sun 1 Dec) perform all their hits, whilst The Adele Songbook (Sat 26 Oct) faithfully re-creates the magic of Adele. The Diary of a Norfolk Family By Mark King It’s the end of an era. This short sentence is used often to the point where it can lose its true meaning, but, for our family, it’s spot on. For the last eleven years, my children have attended Hillside Avenue Primary School. My daughter left for high school four years Above: Mark King ago, and after these summer holidays are over, my son will be joining her there too. For our family this has truly been the end of an era. Most of these school years there, were at least two visits a day, Monday to Friday for the school run, and quite often three or more for things like class assemblies, sports days and competitions, weekly parent/child reading time, parents’ evening, exhibitions, music lessons, sickness pick-ups, popping in to drop of forgotten items, fates, fairs and fund raising. Christmas shows, dance shows, orchestra shows and end of year shows. Presentations and prize winning. Then every Saturday come rain or shine, heat or hail, cold, freezing cold or just damn unbearable cold weather, there was football training

or competitive games on the school football fields for Hillside Rovers Football Club. Once at high school, this all ends. They now go to school under their own steam, and virtually all schools events like prize giving, sports days, competitions and much more are held behind closed doors. There are the occasional shows put on for parents, but that’s it! The family, including grandparents, went to all the leavers’ events and on the last day we all attended the special leavers’ assembly. Afterwards, we all gathered in the sun for group photos and to hand over presents to the teachers, and their teaching assistants, and all the children signed each other’s white school shirts with a varied colour of pens. It was emotional I must admit as the tears flowed from the students, parents and teachers. I could not thank enough Hillside Avenue School, and all their wonderful staff over the years for the first class education my children have received. They have both excelled academically, musically and both came away with a passion for sport. Time For Drastic Action I am not sure if it was catching sight of myself in the mirror or trying to squeeze my bum into something that felt a little too snug, but recently I decided enough is enough and it was time to address my weight.

‘So how about you?’ I asked, keen to find out how she had fared.

I have a ton of pretty dresses hanging in my wardrobe from my slim days and I keep promising myself that one day I will get back into them. Problem is, it’s not just the dresses I can no longer fit into. The last few months have been a wake-up call, as I can barely get into any of my summer clothes. Time for drastic action. Now Mama Beev also wants to shift some weight. Although she is slim, she carries a bulge around her middle that she is eager to address, and, like me, she lacks willpower, so I suggested last weekend that we start together the following day and encourage each other. She readily agreed. By Tuesday evening, I was super proud of myself. Not only had I swapped all of the rubbish in my diet for healthy salads and vegetables, I was two days teetotal. Only two days I hear you cry? Trust me, two days is a big effort for me. I had also been tracking my steps, being sure to get 10,000 in a day. Not easy when you work in an office, but between lunches and after work walks I somehow managed it. ‘Those 10,000 steps are supposed to be in addition to

When I pointed out that it was about 7,000 steps a day more than I had been getting, so should be viewed as a positive, I got a lecture about planning my day properly to get in more steps. She also seemed unimpressed by my dieting effort and lack of alcohol.

Mama Beev went into a longwinded story about her busy Monday that was entirely irrelevant to my question. When she paused for breath I interrupted and asked again. ‘Well, that was what I was getting to,’ she told me. ‘By the time Monday was over I was exhausted, so I threw a frozen pizza in the oven.’ ‘I see. And have you stayed off the alcohol?’ I enquired. ‘Well I had some wine on Monday,’ came the reply. ‘But I was good on Tuesday and only had a couple of gin and tonics, which don’t really count.’ Okaaay! As I type this column, six days in to my new regime, I am sticking to my diet, still managing my steps, and my weekly alcohol intake consists of one single measure of gin. I spoke with Mama Beev again last night, who gave me a repeat lecture while stuffing her face with a packet of crisps. Will I be following any of her advice? Probably not. PAGE

Have You The Confidence To Speak Up? There are times when we could kick ourselves, aren't there? There was something we wanted to say, an opportunity to join in and contribute, but we hesitated and the moment passed. Irritatingly, someone else may have even then inadvertently offered our pearls of wisdom and received a great response. If only we'd had the confidence to speak up! At work, finding the confidence to speak up can be a mixed blessing. If we put ourselves out there, with all that it entails, will we then be regarded as someone who doesn't toe the line, a trouble maker or a know-it-all? Some people fear voicing opinions at work; might there be reprisals, could it jeopardise their promotion prospects, put a ‘black mark’ next to their name? As an employer, it's important to provide an environment where staff feel safe to share ideas and concerns, knowing they'll be taken seriously.

Or, even worse, might something said be perceived as stupid or inappropriate and result in being ridiculed? Meetings and presentations can be especially vulnerable situations for someone who's feeling low on confidence. The prospect of standing up and having to speak out loud can be daunting. In family and social settings, many people prefer to avoid confrontation and keep quiet or go along with things, choosing it as the safest option. And, indeed, there are times when smiling and saying nothing is a preferred course of action. Not everything needs to be debated or analysed. But, over time, not speaking up can change a relationship's dynamics and affect its balance. Having open, respectful channels of communication can mean that nothing’s simmering or left unsaid and everyone feels included and valued, able to say what's on their minds. PAGE

Could sport, a hobby or volunteering bring some happiness and joy into your life and result in improving your quality of life? • Are people in your life drains or radiators? Some people drain your confidence and joy for life. They only ever see the bad, cannot be supportive, are maybe jealous of you and your enthusiasm and drive. If you can't avoid them, be sure instead to protect yourself from too much exposure and minimise the time you spend in their company. Refuse to join them in negative or draining exchanges. Try to mix with people who radiate positive qualities like confidence, who share your outlook, who are equally committed to their dreams and encourage and support you in yours. • Occasionally, challenge your point of view by inviting other perspectives and discussing any contentious issues you may have to deal with. There may be another side to the story. Be prepared to consider different points of view, constructive criticism and feedback. A clearer thought process can improve your confidence. • In disagreement situations, own how you're feeling rather than blame others. It gives you a more confident stance. 'When this happens, I feel,' is far more constructive and less antagonistic than, 'you make me feel', which can cause the other person to feel under

Avoid using lots of examples attack and become defensive. Avoid using lots of examples. They can distract and generate a merry-go-round of explanations, justifications and counter-claims. • A neutral place is often a good idea when there's a difficult conversation to be had. It keeps a discussion on track and avoids it becoming loud or escalating out of control. You can stay calm and hold onto what you have to say without losing confidence or being concerned at things 'kicking off'. • Sometimes a mediator can be useful, but has to be someone who both parties respect. Yes, there are professional negotiators available, but sometimes a trusted friend, neighbour, colleague or religious leader is able to do a good job and keep discussions relevant. If confidence issues regularly surface, consider hypnotherapy to deal with associated matters. Some people fear confrontation, want to be liked, are wary of upsetting others. Therapy can help you deal with any background factors like childhood influences or previous relationships, remedy underlying concerns, and enable you to move forward, so finding ways to speak up calmly, appropriately and with confidence.

Former Norwich University Of The Arts Student Releases Game! The Game: Must Dash Amigos is the latest family-friendly, must-have party game! Arriving like a pinata stampede, the brainchild of minibeast Studios co-founders Anthony Brunton-Douglas (above right) and Ben Lowther (above left) will quickly have the entire family addicted to its fun, fast paced, easy control gameplay! Choose from one of four crazy characters including Pedro, a former wrestler turned racer, whether you’re in Battle or Race mode and you’re off! We were lucky enough to sample an early version of the game at the Norwich Games Festival two years ago and found it difficult to pull ourselves away. Back at the festival in

2019, we played the finished game and it didn’t disappoint! Its massively addictive gameplay and simple controls mean that the whole family can get involved. Collecting perks as you race to eliminate or hinder the other racers, you must also avoid being caught up by the screen itself. Think Micromachines, but more Mexican?! Surely, you’ve often wondered what it would be like to transform your friends into avocados and chase them around with a giant mallet?! Of course you have, and now thanks to one particular perk in the game “Gwack-a-Mole”, you can! This is by far my favourite perk and as much as I’d like to tell you about all of the others, I won’t spoil any more surprises you’ll encounter along the way…

miniBeast Studios: Anthony, originally from Norwich, is the artist responsible for all the bright engaging levels and quirky character design. Anthony graduated from Norwich University of the Arts back in 2005. His career started as an intern for an e-learning company where he helped create educational games for a number of clients including the NHS. He then went onto become a solo developer to create games for both the Castle Museum and Bridewell museum here in Norwich. Although proving popular as a solo developer, it wasn’t long before Anthony relocated to Cambridge to work at Jagex, the games studio responsible for the hugely popular RuneScape. It was here that he met Ben, the programmer of the game. The pair took part in a game jam hosted by Jagex, and after four days and barely

any sleep, a prototype racing game was born, which was to later grow into Must Dash Amigos! Jagex were kind enough to allow the duo to take the title for their own to work on in their own time so with that they went onto setting up their own studio, miniBeast Games. Four years later, and the multiplayer game has just been released on PC with it arriving to Xbox on 7th August! Ultimate Mood Lighting With Cololight There’s nothing like putting your feet up after a busy day at work, sitting in your lounge with the lights turned down low with some nice relaxing music playing. Over the past few years, mood lighting has become very popular and with the advent of colour changed LED, we can now have a beautiful range of colours pulsing gently and filling our rooms with serene pastel colours. I was therefore eager to try out the Cololight from Lifesmart. Cololight is a modular light solution which enables you to fit hexagonal shapes together to create an Alexa-aware, smartphone-driven lighting solution to suit everyone’s taste. The kit I received had 3 lights, a stand and power supply. The device is WiFi driven and setting up

was as easy as downloading the app my Android or iOS device. After clicking the lights together and mounting it in the stand, I powered it up and the lights began pulsing together in unison. Each light has an array of 19 LEDs built in, which allows for animated effects and 16 million colour changes. After connecting it to my wifi, I then began experimenting with different colour choices and effects. ‘Sunrise’ was particularly pleasant as I could see it being sat on my bedside table and being triggered by Alexa to gently wake me up in the morning with a Sunrise colour scheme gently transitioning from red to blue-white. There are a number of other effects, which give both relaxing and stimulating effects. Due to the shape of each of the lights, they can be positioned to form several different shapes and

best of all can be expanded by buying additional lights to add to the 3 supplied. I could imagine an entire area of wall covered in these lights providing some exciting colour effects. Digging deeper into the app, there is scope to create your own effects using the simple interface and Cololight tell me they are planning to expand the features to build in your own custom animations. The unit can also be sound aware, so playing your favourite music will change the lighting dynamically. The build quality and packaging was very high standard and it felt safe to use with power supplied via low voltage USB using just 0.3w. A digital display takes the place of what would be dials in most motors - and BMW's iDrive infotainment unit comes with voice control, a prominent touchscreen, and a swivel wheel next to the gear selector - both now obtainable in crystal. For a convertible, this is a relatively roomy model. It has four seats, but only two smallish kids will fit in the rear – not because of the width or headroom – but due to limited legroom. As for the BMW’s boot, there’s 350-litres of cargo capacity available, which is decent for a vehicle of this class. If you're purchasing a car in this class, you won't be too fussed about the running costs. But if you’re curious, the 850i V8, that I tested will do around 28mpg in the real world. Mind you, over 500 horsepower returning circa 28mpg isn’t bad! As anticipated from a car reducing your bank balance by six-figures, the quality is precisely what you'd expect. Fine-looking rich leather is wrapped around the cabin, and the metals and plastics feel exceptional.

And when it comes to safety, you’ve got nothing to worry about – there’s a lot of kit built-in to this German convertible, including sensors and cameras. A head-up display, which keeps your eyes fixed on the road, is also fitted. And in the unlikely event of a roll-over accident, a roll-bar will deploy, protecting the heads of all occupants.

Are You Making The Most Of Your LinkedIn Business Page? Everyone understands the importance of having a personal LinkedIn profile and if you also have a business, it can be beneficial to also have a business page to engage on a company / brand level with your community. The big question is: have you made the most of your LinkedIn business page?

Not everyone knows that you can personalise your standard LinkedIn url (which contains your unique identification number) to something more memorable - and it only takes a few clicks to create! Sign in to your Page Admin Centre, click 'Admin tools' and select 'Public URL' enter your new page URL and click 'Save Changes'.

Here's a few tips to consider...

You're able to do this once every 30 days, but to be honest, I can't see why you'd do this multiple times anyway - unless you're a bit indecisive.

Review your company profile information, keeping it up-to-date and accurate. Ensure you've added your company’s website URL, contact details, and important information.

On a more basic level, don't forget to make sure you've got a personalised background/cover image for your business profile rather than the default LinkedIn one - this can really help reinforce your brand to potential visitors. As on personal profiles, your headline text needs to grab your visitor's attention, so careful thought needs to be given to this. Create both an overview and accompanying page content to tell your business’s story in an engaging way - don't forget that the first few lines of your company’s overview is the content that will be visible to users across devices so craft this carefully, remembering to include relevant keywords to aid searchability. To help your company get discovered on LinkedIn, create some additional Showcase pages. Use these to spotlight different facets of your brand - possibly a new product, product areas or events. These will help give a broader understanding of your business to your visitors and allow for potentially more engagement and searchability. If you've not joined a group - do it now! It doesn't matter whether it's your personal or business profile, being a member of a group allows you to see people who aren't on your network and most importantly, engage with them. Holkham Country Fair Review

Horses, shooting, classic cars, tractors and delicious food - what’s not to love? This is what I was lucky enough to be surrounded with when I visited Holkham Estate recently for their annual country fair! Held over the weekend of 20th and 21st July, the yearly spectacle of Norfolk’s finest did not disappoint on my first ever time visiting, despite the downpour of rain we were unlucky enough to have on the Saturday of the show! If you’ve never been to Holkham Estate, I highly recommend it. The grandeur of the hall and the beauty of the grounds never disappoint belonging to the Earl of Leicester, the 25,000acre estate really does take your breath away!

I was privileged to be invited to the show as part of an influencer experience held in conjunction with North Walsham Waitrose, and this meant entry into the vice president enclosure, something I have always wanted to do at a country show. It was brilliant to have a front row seat at the grand ring, and especially the opening ceremony consisting of the Poppy Parachute Team with their colourful smoke and impressive parachuting which led onto The City of Norwich Pipe Band - I love bagpipes! The day really was a chance to embrace the English spirit (quite literally… who knew there were so many fab Norfolk gins?) and get stuck into the world of the country set. I had to stop myself from buying something from each of the amazing clothing vendors who were exhibiting

too; there were so many! If I hadn’t brought my other half along to voice reason, I would’ve left with at least 3 fedoras, a wax jacket and several pairs of wellies/boots. However, if you are in the market for this type of attire, I would seriously recommend saving yourself for next year as there are some brilliant show-only offers the stalls do and so many lovely things to choose from. Whilst I loved the animals, the clothing and seeing all the beautifully restored tractors and cars, the real draw for me (as always) was the food stalls. I am finding it easier and easier to find something vegan and delicious at places like this. I went for an amazing chaat masala served with vegetable samosas - and it was to die for! There was no shortage of food options. My other half chose a pasty as big as his head and we both had the nicest ice creams for dessert too! As always at a country fair, there were lots of local food and drink sellers displaying their wares: something which never fails to amaze me in Norfolk, as I really do believe we have so many local companies doing brilliant things.

I treated myself to some Yau’s nut-free Thai satay sauce, which made me very excited, because as someone allergic to peanuts I had never tasted satay before. All I will say is, I see what the fuss is about! All in all, I would really recommend giving Holkham Country Fair a visit next year if you can. It is a day out that all the family would enjoy. With archery, a fairground and donkey rides amongst the activities on offer, there is plenty for children and adults alike to discover. The setting and grounds are one of the best in the area, you cannot help but stare in awe at the house the whole time, it’s incredible. Whilst you’re that way, if you get the chance please visit Holkham beach - it is the most stunning beach I’ve ever been to; you won’t be disappointed. Firstly, welcome to the Iceni Magazine family. We are delighted to have you on board. So, let's start at the start. What inspired you to work with roses?

It all started when I was 'knee-high' to a rosebush. My late father and mother started Peter Beales Roses in the late 1960s. So from a very early age, I was surrounded, by in my opinion, arguably one of nature's most beautiful flowering shrubs. Their form, colour, and, of course, perfume make them irresistible, and therefore I was hooked. And when you combine this with my late parent's enthusiasm and passion, there was no other option than for me to fall in love with them too.

Richard Beales Garden Design and Build is a garden design and construction company which is focused on creating new and exciting outdoor spaces which can be enjoyed by all who use them. Our core belief is that a garden is so much more than a collection of plants interspersed with structures and hardscape. It is an extension of the client themselves and, for that reason, should be a place where they can go to be at one with nature.

What has been your career highlight to date? There have been so many that it is almost impossible to highlight any one event. This said, I am incredibly proud to have designed numerous gold medal-winning displays at the Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show. These are significant to me not only because of the accolade, but because of the pleasure they given to so many people over the years. More recently, another highlight was when myself and a good friend and co-designer Paul Zimmerman were asked to redesign the gardens at the headquarters of the American Rose Society in Shreveport, Louisiana. When completed, the new garden will hopefully be seen by many thousands of rosarians and keen gardeners alike, making it most definitely a feather in our cap. What is next on your to do list? We are currently working on two projects. The first being the re-design of a rather tired front garden. In this instance, the client requested a simple, low maintenance garden, so we are working on a contemporary theme. Within the design, there will be a series of raised planters of different levels which will be accessed by formal

paving and surrounded by stone and modern Buxus cubes. The planting will be for impact and will include a variety of grasses and plants with both a colorful and structural influence. Our second project is the creation of an Apothecary garden at a Manor house in Sussex. Due to its very nature, this design will include intricate, symmetrical box edging, which was very much in vogue at the time. And due to the gardens historically being for medicinal purposes, we will use as many of the plant varieties that would have been present that time, along with a selection of medieval roses. We are privileged to have you on the team, what kind of things can our readers expect from you? The Role Of Food In Your Social Life The words, 'would you like to come for dinner?' can be enough to cause apprehension in even the most confident of us. What shall we wear, who else might be there, should we take something with us, will we be able to eat what's on offer, what if something looks too awful to eat? I'm sure we've all been there, running through these questions before we go to someone's house. And if it's a dining out arrangement then we may add questions about settling the bill, who's drinking alcohol and who's not, how formal will it be. A lovely invitation to a relaxing meal can suddenly become overshadowed by a plethora of 'what if' thoughts running through our minds. Fear at looking stupid, inexperienced, a fussy eater can make us wonder if we should even go along.

Of course, all these concerns can be dependent on the circumstances of the invitation, on how well we know the person or persons involved. Is it a group invitation with colleagues, friends or family or is it something more formal, perhaps accompanying our partner to a business event? Is it a first date, the early stages of a new relationship or something more long-standing? And then, of course, there's the other role of food in your social life, the invitation to supper! Whatever does that invitation mean? Is it going to be a light snack or something more substantial? Preparing your response in advance, so that you're appropriately gracious and appreciative, whatever is served, is an important social skill. Random social events and food are a potential minefield. I recall supermodel Jerry Hall saying she always had dinner before she went to a reception in order to avoid being tempted by the high-calorie buffet snacks that never fill you up.

You never know what you're going to encounter at buffets and canape events! And then there's the hazard of finger food, the juggling of a drink, a small plate, all whilst chatting or maybe wanting to greet someone or shake their hand! Let's not forget the food vigilantes who monitor what everyone eats. They know who's on a diet, who ought to be on a diet! Dare we eat anything too rich, or have a dessert! Dare we risk the raised eyebrows as we order a creamy pasta sauce or a sticky toffee pudding for dessert? And allergies! Hasn't almost everyone got special dietary requirements these days, ranging from food intolerances to extensive lists of what they will and won't eat? The diverse requirements of a bigger group often justify going out to eat and choosing somewhere with a comprehensive menu that accommodates everyone. Money can be another hot potato. The bill! Should it be divided equally between all the diners? But what about the people who hardly ate and those others who had several courses or expensive choices? Some people may have wanted to be sociable and join in, but can't afford to spend a lot. Should they subsidise the others? What about the wine drinkers and the non-drinking drivers? Is it a first date, and if so should the man pay, or could that cause discomfort or embarrassment? Having said this, social eating is a great way to relax and reconnect with old friends and make new ones. Taking time over a meal is

Many restaurants now cater for family parties and it's a joy to see several generations sitting together over Sunday lunch, chatting and taking their time. Home entertaining can be an easy way to share time together, especially if several people have young children and don't want the potential stress of dining out. One suggestion can be that everyone contributes a dish, so spreading the load in terms of cost and effort. Barbecues and picnics can come into their own too over the summer months and are a fun alfresco way of enjoying food and a social life. Safari suppers are also a good idea, where residents in a street or community plan to have one course at each house and then journey on to the next over an evening. Introduce a theme and you can end with an unexpectedly fun time! We all have to eat so let's make the most of these opportunities to really relish the role of food in our social life.

Barbecue Side Dishes I believe there are two different kinds of barbecue people: the ones who gravitate towards the meat and those who prefer the side dishes. Being someone who could take or leave the burgers, kebabs and sausages, I’m sharing three of my favourite recipes that are must haves at our barbecues.

SWEET AND SOUR ONIONS

Who doesn’t love fried onions with their hot dogs? Well, try these and you might be craving these instead from now on. They add a tasty tang. Simply slice five or six red onions and add to a pan with a little oil. Fry until they’re becoming translucent, then add a big knob of butter, a good sprinkling of brown sugar and a few splashes of balsamic vinegar. Cook until they’re thick and sticky, then enjoy!

HOMEMADE COLESLAW

Homemade coleslaw is truly unbeatable. Even if you go for the most luxurious supermarket version, it still doesn’t live up to the real deal. The mayonnaise you choose is so important and I recommend Heinz [Seriously] Good mayonnaise - my all-time favourite! Simply finely dice half a white onion, shred half a white cabbage and grate a peeled carrot - mix together with some mayo and add some freshly ground pepper and salt. Sometimes, I choose to use a mixture of red and white cabbage for a bit of variety.

POTATO SALAD

As with coleslaw, it’s impossible to beat homemade potato salad. Simply boil some new potatoes (Jersey Royals are my favourites though a little pricey!), drain and allow to cool. At the same time as boiling the potatoes, I often boil three or four eggs to add to the mixture (once peeled and diced), but this is down to your personal preference. For the sauce, I use a mixture of mayonnaise and salad cream, plus salt, pepper and a sprinkling of fresh dill. I’m a huge fan of gherkins (cornichons), so finely chop a few of those and throw into the dish. Article By Vicki, Blossom Words PAGE

Nibbles &Tipples August Article By Cheryl Cade, Beer Educator Having survived the hottest day of the year, what do you do? Go for a curry of course. 3 of Norwich’s curry houses are in the National Curry finals, so we had to visit one of them. Dhaba 15 is located in the old Nazma restaurant (Magdalen St). There is a clean, relaxed look to this new Indian Street Food restaurant.

The menu had such a different range, including traditional English curries. We were spoilt for choice. Selecting poppadums, a Chellinad beef curry, Bengal Roshon and a mushroom garlic bhajia.

A welcome that was friendly with all the staff smiling rubs off on you as you walk in.

The first delicious surprise was that the chutneys arriving with the poppadums were fresh and different. I am so used to mango chutney from a jar I never bother, but this was homemade with delicate whole spicing lifting the sweet mango. Next to this was a mint and coconut, which I fought my husband for the last bit of. His favourite was the carrot, onion and garlic with a hint of spice.

We had not booked, but a small table was found, thankfully next to the aircon. The restaurant is unlicensed yet the range of drinks is not held back, with different Lassis and Mocktails available.

Moving on to the mains, the Roshon had a background of gently roasted garlic, with perfectly balanced warmth. While the Chellinad had some heat, tempered by the coconut and this allowed the floral notes of fresh curry leaves

to come through. The mushrooms in the Bhajia were fresh with a little bite still in them, small bits of pepper lifted the garlic. I can honestly say that it has been a while since I have had such a well-cooked curry. All the dishes were fresh, meat soft, spice balanced, each dish tasting different and presented well. I am sure they will be winning more awards. Today's tipples is more about being upset with a couple of pubs (no names will be mentioned). In this heat, beer can suffer. Recently a friend on a Cask Marque visit found a beer served at 27°! It should be a max of 12°-14°. There are many faults a beer can have that are not always the fault of the brewer; a lot comes from storage and service. In general, all beer lines should be cleaned a min of every 7 days (even if they have a keg of beer on). Cask beer is more delicate. Once tapped, its life starts to head downwards. After 3 days, depending on the cellar and the beer, it can go a couple of days longer, but never a week. So a landlord telling me that his beer was “very fresh as it had only been on for about 7 days.” results in me turning around and never going back.

How do you know your beer is on the turn? (quick guide) If you can smell / taste, wet cardboard, paper, musty or dust it is Oxidised (exposed to air). Malt Vinegar and / or butter will hint at an infection. If your beer smells / tastes of Balsamic vinegar, yoghurt or wet hay, check you are not drinking a; Sour/Barrel aged/Old/kettle sour as these are expected in these styles. Composting… Myth Busting And Facts That May Aid Your Home Composting Practice! Composting is a deliciously earthy recycling process, converting waste into yummy fertile organic matter that feeds insects, plants, seedlings, us and earth itself. I volunteer for the Norfolk Master Composter Scheme (I’m a bit of a composting geek!), which sees me attending events talking to people about the fun and ease of composting. Here are a few simple facts and myths that I’ve picked up along my way which may support you in your own composting journey…

‘My compost bin needs to have lots of holes to aerate the contents’…. MYTH! It’s all in the layering and structure. Adding holes to your bin will let out much needed heat in your bin. The process of composting is aerobic (it needs air to decompose) which you can get by adding cardboard, scrunched up newspaper, toilet and kitchen rolls and twigs. As long as your compost bin isn’t oozing or drying out into one compact lump, your compost is being aerated. Keep an eye on it and add as you need.

‘There is a recipe for composting’…FACT! Successful composting will happen when you add equal (ish) brown and green materials. Green materials are fresh and moist, and include fruit and vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, grass and weeds (without the seed head), while brown materials are dry and include cardboard, paper, dry leaves, twigs and straw. If your compost looks too dry, add more green and hold off on your browns. If it looks too wet, go steady on your greens and add more browns. ‘I shouldn’t put grass in my compost’…MYTH! Putting grass in your compost is absolutely fine, as long as that’s not all that goes in there! (See greens vs brown info above) If you really have nothing other than grass, then use cardboard in between layers of grass to balance out your compost. ‘Compost bins stink and attract rats’…MYTH! Nope, just not true. Organic compost smells sweet! If your bin/pile is smelling, check it out. Is it too wet and looking slimy? Add brown. Rats hate being disturbed and won’t stay around if they notice human activity, so by visiting your compost heap regularly, you are letting any little rodent friends know it’s not a good place to set up camp. ‘You can’t put cooked waste in your compost’… MYTH and FACT! Meat and dairy is a sure way to attract little animal friends to your compost bins. (There are special HOT compost bins for this purpose). If you are adding small amounts of cooked vegan food on rare occasions, this will not have any damaging impact on your compost. Don’t make a habit of it, but if you do have left overs (and you haven’t eaten them?!) adding them in will be fine. ‘Citrus peels and onion skins will kill all my compost organism friends’…MYTH! If you have a wormery, adding citrus and onion skins is a no (unless you are using a lime mix which adjusts the PH level). In a wormery, worms do pretty much all of the work and they are sensitive.

Too much acid will harm and potentially kill them. However, in a compost bin/pile there are many other organisms and magic at work, so citrus and onion peels aren’t a problem. ‘I can add my pet bedding into my compost’… FACT! If your pet is vegetarian or vegan and uses natural bedding you can scoop out the lot and add it into your compost. TOP TIPS Add a layer of twigs at the bottom of your compost bin/pile to increase the aeration. Cut up your citrus peelings, avocado and onion skins so they break down quicker. If you are a zero-waste addict, add your hair and nails to your compost. You can ask your hairdresser to bag up your cut hair and take it home and feed it to your compost friends! Composting can change the world if we all get on board with it! Less methane, less waste heading to landfill or being transported elsewhere. It saves you money by not having to buy compost (that is often not organic) and it is such a satisfying and nourishing process of feeding your bin and the many organisms that thrive there. If you are aiming for a more zerowaste life, composting also helps you keep an eye on what it is you have as ‘waste’. Happy composting! Shona PAGE

TELES PATISSERIE We have heard amazing things about your Patisserie. How would you describe yourselves? We describe ourselves as very hardworking and passionate Patisserie lovers. We believe that love and high quality products are the perfect combination for excellent food.

What journey did you take to end up here? Joaquim has been a pastry chef for 28 years and in several countries: Portugal, France, Luxembourg, Belgium and now England. After six months in the UK without a job, a neighbour suggested that he become selfemployed and sell at farmers’ markets, food festivals and events, so he did. Ana was a teacher for 24 years. She was always passionate about cakes and did cake design in Portugal as well as having her own cake art studio. In England, we sold our goodies all around Norfolk and Suffolk until the day the Aylsham Show changed everything. We approached Yare Valley Oils and Farm Shop with the idea of having a Patisserie/tea room onsite. They excelled themselves in helping us to make this dream come true.

You have a great customer base who keep returning time and time again. What's your most popular offering? It’s difficult to say as our customers want to try different cakes and food every time they come. But having said this, our French Fruit Tart and our unique recipe of the Bakewell tart, Tarte d’Amande, are our bestsellers. Our unique luxurious afternoon tea is also gaining more and more popularity. Have there been any regrets? Maybe some things we would have done differently, but we don’t regret being where we are and doing what we love!
