Wymondham Access Group

Wymondham Access Group

Following our meeting on Thursday 31st March 2016 we are pleased to announce the creation of The Wymondham Access Group. It is a voluntary community group with one aim in common, and that is to campaign for better access to all aspects of day to day life in Wymondham and the surrounding area. Our aim is to promote a change of attitudes and culture in dealing with people, understanding many could have invisible additional needs. We want to work with local businesses, other volunteer access groups, local district and county councils to educate an understanding of what potential barriers there are and how these can be overcome. We aim to promote sharing of information, giving people who face barriers a voice and work towards making Wymondham and the surrounding Towns and Villages accessible to all. Our next meeting is to be held on the 9th June 2016 9:30am-11:30am at the Town Green Centre in the Frank Bunn room. All members of the public are welcome to attend our meetings, whether you are a parent or carer who has difficulty accessing areas with pushchairs, a person with a physical or sensory impairment or a local business person who wants to know more about our group, we can advise you on how best to ensure you are catering for the needs of all members of the community wherever possible. For more information please email: contact@accesswymondham.org on twitter via @WymondhamAccess or find our group page on Facebook under Wymondham Access Group Neil Seach Founder of Wymondham Access Group To Advertise In This Magazine email: wymondham@icenimagazine.co.uk or call: 01603 510 856

North Wymondham Community Arts Event Is A Great Success Visitors to the North Wymondham Community Arts event viewing the work of printmaker Andy Hibberd. Photo by Terrence Burchell

A steady stream of visitors dropped into the Community Arts event on Saturday (April 2) at North Wymondham Community Centre. The event, entitled “Art of the Community”, was one of more than 1000 staged around the country on that day, as part of the BBC Get Creative initiative. However, the trustees and supporters of the charity-owned and maintained building in Lime Tree Avenue, Wymondham, used the opportunity to highlight the venue as a community resource. Printmaker, Andy Hibberd and painter, Liz Reed, shared their skills during the four hour period of arts-related activity, which included author presentations of creative writing, colouring for adults and demonstrations of various handcrafts. Liz Reed changed her role for the second part of the day, to that of a musician, joining colleagues to provide a medley of songs and music. Mulbarton-based film maker and photographer, Terry Burchell, also attended. A spokesperson for North Wymondham Community Centre said: “We achieved our aim of bringing a group of likeminded people together and attracted a number of visitors to the community centre by doing so.” For more information about the community centre, visit: www.facebook.com/North-Wymondham-Community-Association To Advertise In This Magazine email: wymondham@icenimagazine.co.uk or call: 01603 510 856

Wymondham Heritage Museum

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 04 2016

Wymondham Heritage Museum Exhibition at Wymondham Heritage Museum until 31st July 2016

I’m Not Dead Yet is the name of a collection of pastel and charcoal portraits of older people, created by Norfolk based artist, Malca Schotten. As people get older they can begin to feel that they are invisible and that their contributions to society are not recognised or appreciated. I’m Not Dead Yet sets out to challenge that attitude and to make people - of whatever age - think again! During the summer of 2013 Malca created a ‘pop up studio’ in the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library, inside the Forum, and spent hours with her sitters, capturing their faces, stories, loves, lives and personalities on huge canvases. You can find out more about this exhibition on the I’m Not Dead Yet blog at imnotdeadyetblog.com Normal museum entry prices apply but why not take advantage of the “Pop in Late for One Pound” offer. Enter the museum after 3.15pm, you’ll have time to see the exhibition and be able to spend a short time in the 19th Century ex prison, hopefully this will encourage visiting again and spending more time with us. In addition to this excellent exhibition the museum is also a fantastic place to learn about the history of the town from Kett’s rebellion to the Bridewell inmates and the many individuals who have contributed, good and bad, to the history and making of the market town. The museum is also a great place to take children of all ages with the added extras of a mouse trail, archaeological box, quiz sheets and various interactive displays. The dungeon is a particular favourite! Some changes have been made this year to integrate the tearoom more closely with the museum. Display panels and improved lighting give the opportunity to show a range of items that will be changed from time to time; the first items are from the Town Archive. The museum welcomes offers from anyone or group who may wish to show works of art or items of interest either in the tearoom or the Community Cabinets, contact via the museum email: info@wymondhamheritagemuseum.co.uk While you are at the museum, do not forget to visit the courtyard garden. The garden was originally the exercise yard for the new Bridewell and later became the airing yard for the Women’s Prison Laundry. It has been transformed with box hedging, ferns, flowers, shrubs and climbing roses. Landscaping includes historic artefacts such as a local millstone and an iron pump formerly used to lay the dust on the roads. It provides a pleasant area to just sit and relax after your visit. Entrance to the garden is included in the admission price. The museum is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm, Sundays from 11.30am to 2.30pm from 29th February to 29th October. 10

Mulbarton Words Week

Mulbarton Words Week Is Back! After a successful first year in 2015 the South Norfolk village of Mulbarton will once again be hosting a Festival of Words, spoken, sung and written, from 5th to 11th June 2016.

Broadbeat Choir Saturday 11th June

With a larger and more diverse range of events planned for 2016 the organisers hope that the week will attract even bigger audiences this year. Amongst the offerings this year will be an evening devoted to wildlife and natural history writers, including Mike Toms from the British Trust for Ornithology and author of “Owls”, an afternoon vintage tea party with Phyllida Scrivens who will be talking about her book “Escaping Hitler”, the story of a Jewish boy’s flight from Nazi Germany and how he eventually became Sherriff of Norwich, and an evening with four female authors, one of whom will be Elly Griffiths, author of the popular crime fiction series set in and around North Norfolk. Saturday afternoon and evening will be filled with song and poetry, with acts including the Broad Beat Choir, soprano Emma Nuule, the Emily Winng Band, pop poet Ben Winn and a welcome return of Kings Lynn-based Morganway.

The Wymondham playwriting group “Four by Four” will also be returning to perform a new series of radio plays whilst other events planned include a Sunday morning talk and exhibition looking at the effect the Bible has had on English literature. There will also be an early evening walk around Mulbarton’s historic common led by local historian Jill Wright, author of the “Book of Mulbarton”. The “Big Quiz”, complete with an extra special table round this year, will take place in the World’s End on Sunday night whilst children’s events will be taking place in the village’s Infant and Junior Schools on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. Wymondham’s community bookshop, Kett’s Books, is again supporting Mulbarton Words Week and will have a bookstall at several of the events. Ladies Who Write Monday 6th June

Further details of the week’s programme together with ticketing and booking information can be found on the Words Week website, www.mulbartonwords.org, and Facebook page or by phoning Chris Lansdowne, Event Coordinator, on 01508 570976.

Fosters Solicitors

Fosters Solicitors Understanding How To Make A Will. The benefits of creating a valid Will cannot be understated. If you die without leaving a valid Will you may unwittingly cause problems which can be very difficult to sort out. In this situation the law provides strict rules which spell out how your property and assets are to be shared. The effect may not be at all what you would have wanted. At Fosters Solicitors, we will prepare a Will that is tailored to you and your situation. Below are the five areas of a Will that you would need to consider: EXECUTORS You should name who you want to appoint as ‘executors’. These can be family, friends or professionals such as solicitors. They will carry out the terms of your will. An executor can also be a beneficiary. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS You can decide if you have any particular wishes for your funeral e.g. burial, cremation and what type of service you would like. These wishes can assist your executors. PROVISION FOR CHILDREN UNDER 18 If you have any children who may still be under 18 when you die, you may want to nominate a guardian for them; you may also want to provide for them financially under a trust. It is important that you let us know if you have any children who are not biologically yours, e.g adopted, fostered, or step children.

GIFTS IN YOUR WILL If there are any specific items you wish to gift to anyone in particular the place to do this is in your will. You can also leave a specific sum of money to family members, friends or charities. Be prepared to tell us what assets you have such as property, savings and property abroad. REMAINDER Fosters will need to know who you wish to have the remainder (residue) of your estate after any gifts. This can be left to any number of people, or organisation/charities. Don’t forget to provide for your spouse, civil partner or life partner. With this information Fosters Solicitors will be able to draft a Will for your approval. Once you are happy with the draft it needs to be signed before two witnesses who are both present when you sign, and who then sign the Will in each others and your presence. A witness cannot be a beneficiary nor can their spouse or civil partner. If a beneficiary or their partner witnesses your will the gift to them will fail. For further information about writing a Will contact Fosters Solicitors Wills, Trusts & Probate team on 01953 607724 or by email on: wtp@fosters-solicitors.co.uk

Hannah spent much of her formative years touring Europe with her family band, then moved to the USA. Social Media

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 04 2016

How Secure Is Your Social Media? We all like to think that we've taken all the precautions we can to avoid allowing anyone to access our smartphone, tablet or desktop PC but have you considered whether your social media accounts are secure? While no account can be 100% secure there are a variety of steps we can take to make it as secure as we can. Here are just a few to get you thinking... 1. Stronger Passwords Stop using the simplistic passwords like 'password123', 'password' or '123456ABC' yes, they might be easy to remember but that's the inherent problem - these all use simple 'patterns' that are easy for hackers to guess. Ideally try to use a 'password vault' that generates longer secure passwords that are harder to guess. There's a host of 'password vaults' available, one of the most popular is 1Password which can generate strong passwords and store them safely until you need them.

Another alternative is the three random words option which HM Government is championing at the moment at https://www.cyberstreetwise.com/ passwords 2. Keep them fresh Try to change the passwords on all your social accounts at regular intervals. Password managers can make quick work of this potentially time consuming task. In addition to making it harder for anyone to guess your password changing your passwords also hinders former employees, who may have known the passwords, from accessing your accounts and posting unwanted content. 26

3. Be careful what you click We've all experienced phishing emails asking you to click to verify your bank or eBay details or that your account has been suspended - well you can also get these on social media. Often these phishing attempts are in the form of malicious links in a tweet or post from someone you don't know or that have no additional content or just seem out of place for that user. Other examples are click baiting or #hashtag hijacking. Remember if you're not sure or it's too good to be true - don't click it. Using a third-party social media management application to manage all your social accounts in one place can give you some additional security as some of these are designed to spot malicious links and alert you before it’s too late. In the end use your common sense and you can't go far wrong. 4. Account contact info Most social media platforms will ask for an email address or mobile number that they'll use in the event of an issue. For instance Twitter asks for a mobile number to associate with your account as they'll use this to contact you via a txt message should you have issues accessing your account or suspect fraudulent usage. In some cases this is the only way they'll contact you, so if you don't enter one you could be left high and dry! Always periodically check your account details to ensure they're up to date - yes it's tedious but you might just be glad you did check them if you have an issue. Summary At the end of the day all social media platforms want you to have a good user experience so check their support pages for additional ways to secure your accounts. Well that wraps up my tips for securing your social media account. There are obviously lots more that I could have touched on but hopefully these few tips will help make you think a bit more about your accounts, what you do on them and who has access to them. Arabian Nights Oman is a hidden gem, a breath of fresh air in contrast to its high rise, packed and somewhat artificial neighbour Dubai. Not only does this relatively unknown country have some of the warmest and most hospitable people, its culture, history and beauty make it a perfect holiday destination. October to April, before the summer heat arrives, is the best time to visit. Start your holiday with a few days in Muscat. Founded some 900 years ago, it is set on the edge of rough desert landscapes overlooking emerald seas. Today it’s a sought-after holiday spot for those in search of pristine diving waters, all-year-round sunshine and an authentic Arabian experience. Hit the souq, a maze of tiny winding streets. The heat, aromas and hustle and bustle can be overwhelming but it is the perfect place to pick up souvenirs. Venture off the beaten path to secure the best prices and remember that haggling is all part of the fun and experience. Go with the flow and enjoy the experience. 28

Before leaving Muscat you may wish to visit a fort or two. Complex structures built out of mud,

brick, stucco and stone, they are cleverly designed to endure the test of time. Two of the most well-known, Al Jalali Fort and Al Mirani Fort, are looked at as the guardians of medieval Oman. His Majesty Sultan Qaboos decreed that Muscat’s buildings could never rise more than ten stories so that they would not overshadow these forts. Neither of the two forts can be visited (they’re closed to the public); but both can be viewed, admired and photographed. The all-white Moorish architecture and killer attention to detail make The Chedi one of the region’s most luxurious hotels and it's a gorgeous location to sit back, relax and enjoy a drink or two whilst watching the sunset. But why confine your visit to Muscat when there is so much more to do and discover. Driving in Oman is relatively easy. Pick up your 4x4 and head about 2 hours south to Wadi Arbeieen, a paradise high in the mountains. Go deep along the rock tracks where only 4x4s can venture.

Before leaving Muscat you may wish to visit a fort or two You will be rewarded with long stretches of serene and untouched valley all to yourself, dozens of fresh water pools for a dip, and the ultimate soundtrack of nature. There are moments when all you can hear are the sounds of running water, bird song and a breath of wind flowing through the narrow channels. Watching the night sky with its myriad of stars at the 1000 Nights Camp in Wahiba Sands will take your breath away But, with no artificial light pollution, be sure to take a torch with you. If you want to catch sunrise in the desert you have to get up at about 5am. Climb to the top of a sand dune and just sit there. Take sand boards and have a thrill riding down once the sun is up. Before leaving Wahiba Sands, hire a guide and go for a spot of dune bashing. Charging up, down and sideways through the dunes isn’t for the faint-hearted but it’s an experience that’s hard to beat. Nizwa, originally the capital of Oman, is most famous for it's fort and should not be missed. The many examples of Omani architecture, with its ornately carved wooden doorways and window frames, are great for budding. Nizwa is an ideal overnight stop en route between Wahiba Sands and the entry point to get to Jebel Akhdar. Jebel Akhdar, meaning Green Mountain, refers to the northern section of the Hajar mountains. As you take the road out of Nizwa heading for Jebel Shams, you start to climb past ancient villages steeply terraced into the mountainside.

Near the summit is a wide plateau from which you can peer into Wadi Ghul, Oman’s Grand Canyon. A sheer drop of over a kilometre, with dramatically contorted vertical rock faces opposite, it simply takes the breath away. The Sahab Hotel is a great spot to stop for lunch. Perched halfway up the canyon wall in a seemingly inaccessible location at the head of the valley is an abandoned village where the narrow terraces can still be made out. After a fun filled and exhilarating week in the desert and mountains of Oman we stopped for an extra couple of nights back in Muscat for a little bit of beach time and to get our water fix. If there is diving to be had in a destination then we will seek it out. Exceptional coral growth and exotic marine life make for a great diving experience, even if the visibility isn't as great as elsewhere due to the plankton-rich waters. We also couldn't leave without taking the opportunity to spot dolphins. There are numerous operators in Muscat offering Dolphin sighting and snorkelling trips with the chance, if you are lucky, of whales making an appearance too.
