Thought Of The Month Saturday afternoons ...well I'm still going to the gym (don't all sound so surprised) I'll keep you posted. What a great time of the year this really is, bright mornings, warm days, countless BBQ's and beach outings. But I miss those Saturday afternoons when I run in and switch the TV on, to countless screams of joy coming from all over the country. Still not long to wait... one month to go...on the ball city. SWAGGER & JACKS Issue 16 2014

Swagger & Jacks Gentlemen’s Grooming

Despite media speculation to the demise of the Beard, more and more Gentlemen are embarking on their journey of discovery into Beardhood, A proud symbol of masculinity, marking the transition to Manhood. The Beard is a whole new area of self-expression, where you can display your individuality through stylish grooming. Many Gentlemen are using their holidays as the perfect opportunity to start growing their whiskers to establish an impressive foundation before returning to work. Before starting your journey consider these golden rules to achieve the Ultimate Beard. Start the journey from the beginning. If you’re looking to start growing a new beard, be sure to start from nothing. Set aside some time and have a proper wet shave so that the skin is fresh and well treated. This will minimise any early signs of irritation or underlying skin problems. Be Persistent and determined The beard may be itchy for the first few weeks or even up to the first month. Products such as Swagger & Jacks Ultimate Beard Oil can be used to combat this, but the main thing to remember is that the itchiness will eventually leave. You realistically want to grow the beard for about two months before you can appreciate its true potential and the true fullness. One of the most common errors is to attempt to start shaping or sculpting the beard too early in the process. Consider a shape that suits you. Different beard shapes suit different face shapes. A consultation with one of our Swagger & Jacks Barbers, who have a wealth of experience in the specialist area of beard shaping, will design a beard to suit the contours of your face and texture of the beard.

“Long Live the Beard”

Focus on your strengths. If your beard is patchy or sparse in areas, consider these influencing factors with a style that suits your beards natural growth patterns and texture. Be advised to avoid extravagant shapes, as they will be difficult to maintain and manage at home. Take Pride in Your Beard. Be sure to use a specialist shampoo for your beard like the Swagger & Jacks Argan Oil Beard Shampoo, treat with Swagger & Jacks Ultimate Beard Oil and style with Swagger & Jacks Beard Control. A well-groomed beard is essential, and using the Swagger & Jacks Beard Brush with soft natural bristles, will detangle and smooth waves to leave a healthy shine

FOSTERS SOLICITORS Issue 16 2014

Fosters Solicitors Proposed changes to the legislation on using a mobile phone whilst driving. The current penalty for using a mobile phone, or similar device, while driving is 3 penalty points and a fine up to £1,000. However Patrick McLoughlin, Transport Secretary, is considering doubling this penalty following a recommendation by Sir Bernard HoganHowe, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. This proposal has been sparked by the first increase in the amount of casualties on the roads caused by dangerous driving in over a decade.

Any driver reaching 12 penalty points under the ‘totting up’ procedure will, as a general rule, be disqualified from driving by the Courts. However the Court may use its discretion not to disqualify a driver if ‘exceptional hardship’ circumstances exist. The Court can consider exceptional hardship (which is a specific legal term and includes very detailed case law) to the driver and to others who would be affected by the disqualification.

Driving while using a mobile phone has been a criminal offence since December 2003. However surveys show that many drivers are not deterred by this, and many drivers seem confused by the exact terms of the law. “Using a handheld communication device” is the technical term that covers the offence, so many drivers are unaware that they are guilty of the offence even if they are not making a telephone call, for example there are cases where using the music player function, checking to see whether a text has been received, and even checking the time has been held to fall in the definition of “using”.

Fosters Crime and Defence team have significant experience in dealing with all cases of this type, particularly in pleading exceptional hardship arguments.

If the new proposals come into force, anyone caught twice within three years would face a driving ban of 6 months. For newly-qualified drivers however, the increase in penalty would be even more significant, as it would mean that any ‘New Driver’ would face the loss of their licence and having to retake their test.

If you would like to speak to a member of the Crime and Defence team, please call the main switchboard on 01603 620508 or email Chris Brown at: cbrown@fosters-solicitors.co.uk.

COLLEGE FARM Issue 16 2014

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Welcome To One Of Norfolk's Newest And Most Historic Wedding Venues Earlier in the year a group of wedding suppliers came together to launch College Farm in Thompson as an exclusive new wedding venue with a styled wedding shoot and a bespoke wedding show. College Farm is owned by Katharine Wolstenholme who has run the house as a bed a breakfast since 2010 (which her late mother Lavender established in the 1970s). Set in the heart of the beautiful Norfolk countryside, the house is steeped in history and dates back to the 14th Century. It was built by Sir John and Sir Thomas de Shardelow as a College of Priests to serve St Martin’s Church and inhabitants of the village. Sir Thomas married Margaret, daughter of Sir Roger de Grey of Merton from whom Katharine is descended. In 1541 following the dissolution of the monasteries and the College, its lands and revenues were assigned to Sir Edward Knevitt. In 1845 the Thompson College estate was exchanged for the Suffolk estate of the 5th Baron Walsingham. Thus Thompson College, or College Farm as it became known, passed back to the de Greys of Merton. Fast forward to 2013 when Katharine had the idea to develop her business by offering the grounds of the house as a venue for weddings.

“My husband Richard and I had our own wedding reception here back in the 80's and it was beautiful – we walked from the church back to the house where we had a marquee in the garden with the front of the house as a stunning backdrop to our reception. My vision is to be able to offer the same magical experience to other couples,” she explains. To help launch College Farm Katharine got together with fellow wedding suppliers - Debbie Harris of 2up photography, hairdresser Anna Kirkpatrick and Anna Yeomans of Anna Yeomans beauty. After starting with modest ideas the group were amazed at the interest shown in the wedding show especially via social media. Very soon they had secured a giant hat tipi from Magical Camping and a marquee from Mortons Marquee hire which then gave scope to include more exhibitors. At another of the team's high powered meetings around Katharine’s farmhouse kitchen table (fuelled by one of her legendary cakes!) the group decided to organise a styled shoot on the day before the show to generate more publicity and to give some of the exhibitors an additional chance to show-case their products. Once again the team found social media invaluable and they used the Norfolk hour on Twitter to find several models for the shoot.

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

After months of planning the event weekend arrived with a flurry of excitement and activity. Katharine continued to use social media to share the transformation of her lawn into an exhibition space and wedding venue. The Saturday wedding shoot was unique to say the least with the addition of race horses, lambs, a guitar and a very fetching pair of white wedding wellies, while the show day itself attracted over 30 exhibitors and couples from across Norfolk eager to check out Norfolk's newest and historic wedding venues. Speaking after the weekend Katharine was very pleased with how the shoot and show turned out.

English natural mineral water Iceni, Official Water Supplier for the England Hockey teams, is delighted to announce the winner of the successful 'Iceni Grassroots Hockey Giveaway' is Ashford Hockey Club. The programme which is designed to support local clubs across the country, provides essential hockey equipment using the simple mechanic of collecting the labels from bottles of Iceni Water, which are then exchanged for branded balls, bibs and training cones. Starting in January 2014, the programme ran until the end of June, and saw record numbers of grassroots hockey clubs across the UK getting involved! Iceni received impressively nearly 4,000 labels, which were exchanged for Iceni-branded bibs, cones and hockey balls. Recognising that hockey clubs are always under growing pressure from increasing costs, the programme is designed to be suitably achievable and affordable, and after feedback and comments from entrants and winners from the 2013 giveaway, Iceni kept most of the format and mechanics of the competition the same as before. Clubs simply collected certain quantities of Iceni water bottle labels in return for the hockey training equipment. Brett Fleming-Jones, Managing Director of Iceni Waters Ltd commented, “After the success of the 2013 Iceni Grassroots Hockey Giveaway we are absolutely delighted to be able to continue to support hockey clubs and encourage the younger generation to become more involved in the sport. It’s been really exciting to see the amount of new interest, building on last year, as Iceni continues to grow alongside the reach of grassroots hockey clubs we’re in touch with. Our aim is to use the scheme to continually raise awareness of the importance of maintaining hydration during exercise as this is a key element to achieving sporting excellence.” Kristy Goldie-Brammer, Clubs & Facilities Manager at England Hockey said, “It’s fantastic that Iceni Water can continue to provide such tangible support for hockey clubs up and down the country. The quality of people’s experience at their local hockey club can often be affected by the availability and quality of training equipment. Like many organisations, hockey clubs are coming under sustained economic pressures and the affordability of the programme will really appeal to them. NATURES MENU Issue 16 2014

Natures Menu - Review We love our pets, they are part of the family therefore we want to feed them what we believe to be the best. Having a dog with a skin condition that only steroids and antibiotics would cure, I looked for a longer term solution to prevent the flare ups, rather than treat them once they occur. Researching on the internet the advice that was turning up time and time again was ‘Feed Raw’. Where to start? Once again it seemed that pet owners were sourcing the meat from butchers/supermarkets, mincing it, adding vegetables/fruit. This seemed quite confusing, time consuming, and how much do you feed? What percentage protein per meal was required? I was searching for answers but ending up with even more questions!!! Then I stumbled across Natures Menu - Makers of raw and natural pet foods. They have a range of complete and balanced raw meals which provides a simple way to feed your dog (or cat), a healthy varied raw diet. Bingo!! Just what I was looking for!! I found a stockist and was surprised by the range of Just meat minces - I choose the frozen, free flow easy to pour mince, blended fruit and vegetable nuggets and some meaty bone treats. I decided to change both my dogs to raw feed, because it is good for them and also to make it easier at meal times. I was a bit apprehensive with the first meal, however I followed the feeding quantity guidelines on the packaging, I also added some boiled rice to bulk the meal as suggested on Natures Menu website - it was Simple. Now the truth will be in the tasting (not me I hasten to add)!

The only thing I felt they were missing was something ‘crunchy’ in their bowl, but once again Natures Menu came to the rescue with their new range of products - I have used the ‘Mighty Mixer’ which is simply added to the raw food as you would any mixer (although it is suggested you may not need to feed as much as ‘other’ mixers). There is also a range of cans and pouches - this is great to have for a change, when you’re out and about, or if (like me), you forget to defrost the frozen meat! I use the Venison with Blueberries but there are a lot of flavours available in this range. If you prefer a dry, complete food this is also available in their new Country Hunter range. Lastly, but not least, there is also some completely natural treats - once again with no additives, flavouring or sugar. In conclusion if you are looking to change to ‘Raw Feeding’ Natures Menu make it easy to feed your pet a complete, balanced, hassle free diet. The many varieties available will suit all, whether it is for medical reasons, your pets taste preference or because you want to ensure your pets diet is healthy. I will definitely be continuing to feed Natures Menu with the confidence that, whether it is their main meat, their mixer or treats, what I am giving my pets is completely natural and good for their health and wellbeing.

I need not have worried they loved it - feeding times causes excitement and I feed them in separate areas, because whoever finishes first will be after the other ones!

Now I always assumed my over active imagination was a side effect of being a crime thriller writer. I wouldn’t say I assume the worst of people. If anything I am a very much a glass is half full type of girl, but my mind does sometimes get carried away leading me to some interesting and often Above: Keri Beevis farfetched conclusions. Like for example the time I could hear my neighbour doing DIY. There was banging and sawing and he was probably putting a wardrobe together or something similar, except in my mind I was questioning if he was chopping a body up in his bathtub. Then there was the man sitting in a white van parked on the side of the road, innocently eating his lunch. But was he really eating his lunch or was he a serial killer out looking for his latest victim? And what exactly was in the back of his van? As I say, my overactive imagination would seem to be connected to my writing, except I’ve recently learnt maybe it was actually inherited from my mother. You see, a few nights ago Mama Beev hears a knock on the front door. It’s about 10:30pm and she is getting ready to go to bed. Being her daughter’s mother she immediately assumes that an icepick wielding killer is standing the other side, so approaches the door with caution and asks tentatively, “who’s there”? The knocker replies, but has a thick accent that she can’t understand. Instead of asking him to repeat himself, Mum decides the best solution is to keep very quiet and not move (you know, just in case the caller is Superman and can see through her front door). Ten minutes pass and then comes another knock, this time more persistent. Ooh, scary stuff. Time to get Detective Beevis on the phone. My sister takes charge of the situation (she’s very good at doing that) and advises mum to turn all of the lights on. Let the caller know you are you home. In fact, let the whole freaking street know you are home and give the electricity company something to rub their hands in glee about.

The Diary of a Norfolk Family. By Mark King It's that point in the year that children love, but parents dread, yes, the summer school holidays. The lead up to the holiday can be a busy time with end of year sports days, school shows, concerts and the many other activities and clubs that children attend.

Above: Mark King

From choir, to football and from Brownies to Beavers they all come to a stop for the teachers, and volunteers, who work so hard with your children throughout the school year. It can be a relief not having to act as a constant unpaid taxi driver for the little ones, but if the long hot summer that you long for turns out to be a damp rainy wash out then its hard work trying to keep children entertained. Of course in my youth during the seventies it was a different matter. Parents didn't need to keep you constantly amused. As long as you had a bike, or a football, and a friend to play with you were expected to keep yourself busy, no matter what the weather conditions. In those days in the U.K there were only three television channels and they weren't 24 hour channels either. When you read this my family will be in Tunisia for some relaxation in the sun by the pool. This is where the Arab spring as it became known started before spreading throughout the Muslim world and which is now being played out in Syria. It seems only the British are prepared at the moment to venture there as our European friends stay in friendlier places.

She then instructs Mum to go stand by the front door and say in a commanding voice.

Seeing as we British seem to have been at war with one country or another over the last five hundred years maybe we are more used to it?

“WHAT DO YOU WANT”?

Or maybe we just like a good deal when we see one?

Mum psyches herself up, approaches the door and does as my sister instructs. “I’m from Pizza Hut,” comes the reply. “Did you order a pizza delivery”?

East Coast Truckers Children’s Convoy The East Coast Truckers Children’s Convoy will be taking place on Sunday 24th August 2014 and it’s hard to believe that although this is our 29th Convoy people in Norfolk are still unaware of what this day is all about, or maybe have never heard of the charity. This year is our 29th Convoy and 90 pristine trucks, each carrying a special child with their carer, will be leaving County Hall, Norwich at 10 o’clock heading to Pleasurewood Hills with its invaluable police escort. The Lord Mayor Councillor - Judith Lubbock and the Sheriff - Mr William Armstrong will be in attendance to wave to the children as they leave County Hall. Along with The Chairman of Norfolk County Council - Mr Brian Hannah and The Vice Chairman of Broadland District Council Councillor - Mr John Bracey. Our convoy director - Matt Fitch has the responsibility to oversee the convoy, having had regular meeting throughout the year with the Police and the Highways department. Matt also has the enormous task to select the drivers, who must be DBS checked and ensure their trucks are suitable. We are always over whelmed by the generosity of several hauliers and owner drivers in allowing their trucks to be part of this event free of any charge. Our Child Liaison team Sharon Thorndyke, Evette Styles and Julie Botwright manage our child database. Once the driver is aware of who their invited child will be, they will make contact with the parents to introduce themselves and find out if the child has any special needs. Many a driver after each convoy has gone onto keeping in contact with the child and their family. The Mayor & Mayoress of Lowestoft CouncillorMr Roger Bellham and Mrs Jo Bellham will be at Pleasurewood Hills to greet the Convoy as it arrives and have kindly agreed to join the children at the tea party arranged for later in the afternoon. After an enjoyable afternoon at Pleasurewood Hills the Convoy will leave at 5 o’clock and make its PAGE

way to Great Yarmouth. The charity exhibition trailer will be situated between Joyland and the American Diner on Convoy day. Several bands have agreed to play free of charge throughout the day to the holiday makers. We also have other entertainment from the Crystalette Twirlers, the Fay Bedford dance school and the T S Warrior’s marching band. Just before the Convoy hits Great Yarmouth roads will be closed and volunteer stewards lead by charity trustee Darin Culling will manage the crowds as the convoy slowly makes it way along the Golden Mile preceded by the marching band of the Great Yarmouth T S Warriors. The Mayor of Great Yarmouth CouncillorMarlene Fairhead will be among the crowds near the American Diner to wave to the children riding high in the cabs. We do ask spectators to take care and not to get too close to the trucks as they travel along the Golden Mile. On return to County Hall at about 19:45 the children will receive a goody bag before they start their journey home, tired but very happy ‘little bunnies’. The drivers and their families will then have time to reflect on their day and share their experiences with other drivers as they tuck into a buffet kindly prepared by Betty Tortice and her team. Several trophies are awarded before everyone departs after another fantastic day. And the next day, the process of fund raising and organising the 30th Convoy starts! There are so many people and organisations to thank, without their continued support the convoy would struggle. The Charity is eternally grateful for everyone’s help and support and long may it continue. If anyone would like to volunteer as a steward at Great Yarmouth, please contact Darin Culling on 07966 397733.

Tips To Support Good Health By Susan Leigh For many of us taking good care of our health means being registered with a local family doctor, a caring general practitioner as well as having access to quality specialist care if required. We may pay into private health care insurance schemes or be registered through our employment so Susan Leigh that we can avail ourselves of speedier treatment should an emergency situation occur. It's good to observe that many of us are becoming increasingly involved in the level and quality of care we receive from our healthcare professionals. We ask more questions, demand more answers, want to know what we are being prescribed, how long will we need to take it, are there any known side effects, what is the longterm prognosis, do we need this procedure, are there other options? Access to online information has added to the level of interest over the last few years, sometimes contributing valuable knowledge, other times fuelling health anxiety about symptoms and diagnosis. The good effect is that many of us are looking to take more personal responsibility for our health and wellbeing. We look to support our ongoing health and invest emotionally, mentally and physically in ways to take better care of ourselves and support good health. • Ways to support good physical health are often readily available in a plethora of magazines and the media. Eating a healthy balanced diet, minimising the consumption of processed food, alcohol, sugar and fat are seen as a common sense decision by many people. Exercise is good for better physical health and is also an excellent way to de-stress, manage weight and can include a fun social element if it involves team games like football and rounders or a brisk walk with family and friends. • Stress is often regarded as harmful and bad for our health but some stress can be a good for us. It keeps us on our toes, takes us out of our comfort zone and often enables us to achieve more than we originally anticipated in a crisis or pressure situation. Sustained stress impacts negatively on mental and physical health and is recognised as a major factor in high levels of sick leave and absenteeism. Learning to recognise your own warning signals of being overstressed can provide valuable insight and enable you to introduce effective ways to manage stress more effectively. Your personal warning signs may include loss of concentration, irritability, poor quality of sleep, lack of appetite, headaches.

Once these symptoms are recognised as stress alerts you can support better health by taking a break, going for a walk, having some quality food, taking time for hypnotherapy. Find your best ways to support good health, take control and allow your stress levels to subside. • Work, for many people, is an area of unremitting, sustained stress. Deadlines, excessive volume, urgent demands, the pressure of competition can impact on the quality of other areas of life by devouring your time, energy and good humour. Identify the key areas of pressure, your problem areas and consider ways to effectively manage those concerns. Do you need to delegate, prioritize or schedule your time more efficiently, are you lacking in knowledge or skills where you'd benefit from additional training or would it be helpful to build relationships with other businesses so you can share and support each other, thus offering a better, more comprehensive service to mutual customers and clients. • An important contributor to good health is feeling balanced, at peace and satisfied, where you successfully accommodate the different and diverse areas of your life. A positive mindset benefits your mental health and raises your spirits, bringing joy and allowing you to maintain an optimistic outlook. This balance may be achieved through a combination of undertaking charitable good works, sharing fun time with family or friends, having personal time to pursue your own hobbies and interests, feeling a sense of pride in the efforts you've made to succeed in your career development and business, doing something special with your personal goals, maintaining successful personal relationships. Maintaining a positive outlook occurs as you become increasingly aware of your thought patterns and intercept those that are negative or unhelpful. It involves supporting a good, realistic outlook on life, where you deal with things you can change and enlist help in areas that you can't. Hypnotherapy can help to change unhelpful habit patterns, negative thinking and self-doubt, thus enabling a more constructive mindset, behaviour and attitude to become the norm. Susan Leigh is a Counsellor and Hypnotherapist who works with stressed individuals to promote confidence and self belief, with couples experiencing relationship difficulties to improve communications and understanding and with business clients to support the health and motivation levels of individuals and teams. Mercedes-Benz GLA BY TIM BARNES-CLAY, MOTORING JOURNALIST FOLLOW TIM ON TWITTER: @CARWRITEUPS OR VISIT: WWW.CARWRITEUPS.CO.UK This Mercedes-Benz is zippy on country roads and dynamic and frugal around town or on the motorway. But this isn’t just your standard high-quality Merc. The GLA is the first Mercedes-Benz compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) to be available with the company’s new-generation permanent all-wheel drive system, 4MATIC. The GLA is less imposing than many SUVs, and therefore it fits perfectly into the dayto-day urban lifestyle. At the same time the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, fitted to my GLA 220 CDI model, guarantees plenty of recreational enjoyment. So, once you’re away from the daily routine, the car could tackle, say, rough terrain, the beach, and loose ground without a problem. As a composed everyday companion the GLA has a flexible interior. The rear seat backrests can not only be folded down completely, but are also adjustable for angle if required. In addition, the liberal luggage compartment can be loaded without difficulty thanks to a low sill and wide hatchback. The dashboard consists of an upper and lower section, allowing surface structures that are different in look and feel. Matt and glossy graining creates an attractive light effect and five round air vents are integrated into the dashboard. The Mercedes’ seats are sporty and supportive and controls for the electric seat adjustment are arranged on the interior door panels. These panels are of extremely high quality, having a soft, plush feel about them. The GLA has a large, free-standing display set in the middle of the dash. It serves as a

sat-nav and as an information source. But it has the unfortunate appearance of being stuck on at the last minute. A more integrated system would complete an otherwise perfect cabin. This SUV features a fuel-saving ECO start/stop function; and the engine on the 220 CDI GLA is combined with a dual clutch automatic transmission, which marries efficiency and sportiness to an outstanding level. The set-up of the car’s chassis means you’re guaranteed a comfortable commute. And, compared with conventional systems, the GLA’s power steering provides brilliant feedback.

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

The power steering also allows various assistance functions. These include counter-steering if the vehicle oversteers; steering corrections when braking on surfaces with different levels of grip; reducing the effects of front-wheel drive on the steering and compensation of cross-winds and road camber. This technology gives you the confidence to turn hard into bends because you can sense exactly what’s happening beneath the tyres. The four wheel drive obviously adds to this assurance and fuels a belief that the Merc will grip to pretty much anything at any speed. Numerous safety systems also offer support in the GLA and reduce your workload. Features include Attention Assist drowsiness detection and radar-based Collision Prevention Assist with adaptive Brake Assist, which helps to protect against collisions from a speed of only 4 mph. So, if you’re a bit of car badge snob and you fancy yourself as fair-weather off-roader, then this could well be the motor you’ve been looking for.

Issue 16 2014

Every issue - Dave Lincoln of Horatio Creative (www.horatiocreative.com) will be answering any Web or Design questions you may have. If you would like to contact him, you can do so on Twitter: @HoratioCreative I have heard people mentioning domain names, I realise this is something you type into your address bar to get to a website online, but can you tell me a bit more about these – Anon Domain names have become more important as business and consumers move online. The success of an entire brand / company can depend on if you manage to get the right domain name. To understand these a bit more, lets start at the beginning… How Do Domain Names Work? When you type a domain name into your browser, this is checked against a massive database of domain names that is contained online on DNS servers. When the record is found, the corresponding IP address is returned to the users machine and points to the correct web server that connects and displays the page. Things To Think About When Buying A Domain Name What does your domain name say about your business? - If you registered cupcakes.com – this gives the impression you are the industry leader, if you got online-cupcakes-store.biz, users may think you were late into the industry and just took any name you could get. A good domain name is like getting a store on a busy high street, the more visibility you have, the PAGE more chance you have of visitors finding it.

34

What makes a good domain name? - A good premium domain name should be, keywordrich (so think about what people would put into Google to find you), short, generic, descriptive, include a proper name, geographic, memorable and brandable. If you can, you should always try and get a Top-Level Domain (TLD), these are .com, .net, .org, .info and .biz. Good Locations on the Web Are At A Premium - Its no secret what makes a good domain name, this is why most of the good ones are already taken! PersonalLoans.com fetched $1m when it went up for sale! If you find a good one, snap it up! Don’t Let Your Domain Name Expire! The domain name is yours, as long as you keep renewing it when this is due. Most providers offer an automatic renewal service, which I strongly recommend you use, as if yours does expire and someone else poaches it, it can cost a sizable sum to get this back. What If Someone Domain Name?

Already

Owns

My

If you find someone already owns the domain name you wish to buy, you can find out their information on the WHOIS database (http://www. whois.net/) and contact them to see if they are interested in selling. I Don’t Need My Domain Name Anymore, How Can I Sell This? If you wish to sell your domain name, there are plenty of online tools to help you do this. Sedo.co.uk is a good one, and works on an auction basis.

SOCIAL MEDIA Issue 16 2014

Is Your Business Taking Advantage Of Animated Gifs On Twitter Yet? On June 18th 2014 Twitter announced that you could add animated gifs to your tweets. This unleashed the obligatory cat playing piano gifs, dancing pet gifs, blooper gifs and many more dubious gifs. But don't despair it's not all pointless gifs are gradually being used by businesses as another free and more importantly fun promotional opportunity. What could they be used for? The animated nature of the gif means you could use them to promote a product, brand, service or evoke an emotion in a variety of possible ways: •A step-by-step process (floral or baking businesses) •Product demo (new tech gadget - possible 360 or showcasing a cool feature) •Emotive advertising (ideal for solicitors, wedding industries, food & beverage manufacturers) •Software tutorial (app or game promotions) •Even the obligatory 'funny' outtake! The list of options is only limited by your own creativity and image manipulation skills. A couple of great example can be seen here from InVision http://bit.ly/1A76OOi and this one by Samsung http://t.co/nvGXD5IE22 So how do you add them to your tweets? The process is really straight forward: 1. Compose your tweet 2. Press the 'add photo' icon to add an image and select your precreated animated gif from your desktop. 3. Post your tweet. Then, when the tweet is viewed it'll display the play/pause button. Play the gif, enjoy and share! Unlike photos, where you can add up to 4 photos you can only add 1 gif in each tweet. It's worth noting also that gifs don't auto play - this has to be instigated by the viewer. How do I create a gif? There's a variety of applications that will help you create your animated gifs including Photoshop(Mac/PC), GIFboom(PC), GIFBrewery(Mac) and Gifmaker.me (all formats) to name just a few. For the purpose of this quick run through I'll keep the steps generic - most image applications will work in a similar way. Firstly select your video clip (.mov, .avi, .mpg .mpeg and .mp4). Remember that gifs work best when kept short so you may need

to trim your video in a video editing application like iMovie or Movie Maker. Open your application and select how much of the video you want to work with. Once imported, your gif will split into separate layers/ frames - the longer the video clip the more layers/frames there'll be in your gif. At this point you could customise the gif by adding overlay text or graphics to the relevant layers/frames. This may take some technical know how to get the best outcome. Then, when you're ready you can save your animated .gif. Depending on your application you might need to specify that the gif file is 'animated' - if there's a box for that, make sure it's checked. When you save your gif you should try to make the file size as small as possible - no bigger than 1MB. This might mean tweaking your images bit. The easiest way to cut down your gif is by resizing its dimensions. The 'Colours' setting should be set to 256 - the highest setting. You also want the 'Dither' setting to be as high as possible and 'Lossy' should be as low as possible. You've now created your animated gif to insert into your tweet. These can be then be viewed on twitter.com, most tablets, smartphones & iPhones but at present can only be posted via twitter.com. I hope this brief overview has expanded your perception of this new format and the opportunities that animated gifs can offer your business and you now see them as more than just the next funny cat playing a piano clip. What's next? Well, an interesting 'spin-off' of animated gifs is the way people are manipulating them at a layer level to create 3D animated gifs. 3D really? Well sort of, although I like to describe them as 'perspective' gifs where they give the illusion of depth with the clever use of vertical white lines within the gif. If you want to learn more about 3D animated gifs then check out http://blog. saijogeorge.com/really-easy-create-gifs-3d/ for some really cool examples from film and TV. If you want to know more about animated gifs and their advertising/promotional opportunities or need help creating your own for Twitter, Tumbr or even Google+ get in touch with me at http://paulkirkdesign.co.uk if you need any help with your social media or your website don’t hesitate to get in touch with me at http://paulkirkdesign.co.uk PAGE

EXTERNAL NORFOLK Issue 16 2014

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Eternal Norfolk Summer is maturing. This season is like the finest and richest of wines. Deep, intoxicating, satisfying. And full of a natural richness, a celebration of the myriad joys of life. Which can be witnessed all over Norfolk at the moment. Sights, sounds, senses, all working overtime, because there is so much to see in Norfolk at this time of the year. So much life beneath that broad slash of bright blue canvas that are its big skies. Most of it is free of charge. And much of it either passes us by-or we, ever oblivious, do so ourselves. Take the harvest for example. A yearly ritual where, even if the technology has changed, the importance of it has not. It is a yearly ritual, an indicator of changing times and seasons. The scent of the harvest being gathered in as it drifts with the breeze on a still Norfolk Summer evening is one that rushes me, non-stop, back to childhood and is one I could, if I had to be marooned on that desert island with just books and music for company, want to take with me. Take it in yourself sometime, don’t let the organised burr of the combine be part of the backdrop, there and gone again. Stop, observe, see it, feel it and sense it. This is how it has been for centuries and will, good sense prevailing, continue for many more to come. And let that scent settle in your nostrils. You don’t need wines, perfumes or any other artificial stimulant to delight that particular sense. Sense nature, sense history, sense the passing of time and ritual change. Find a country lane to walk in. There are still plenty of them to explore, to negotiate and wonder at if you look-and looking is part of the fun. For me, the old

PAGE

lands and tracks that criss-cross the chalky uplands that slope gently away from the sea along and up from the coast are a favourite place to lose myself in. Discover the wonder of the hedgerow and bank, still unspoilt and ravage free with many a farmer now choosing to allow the perimeters of his fields to be a wildlife sanctuary. Life oozes in these place in abundance. Hear the song of the Skylark as it soars heavenwards, its song a signal of its own joy in life. Or the Yellowhammer, ‘a little bit of bread and no cheese’ if you please. As you walk, let a hand drift through the poppies, prolific along the banks and field edges, a reminder at home of all those Norfolk pals and so many others who went off to war a century ago so we could all continue to enjoy what we so often take for granted. We have all of our beaches to enjoy as well. Wild, windswept and gloriously desolate in the winter, they are still big and magnificent enough for you to find personal place of peace and solitude on, even at this time of the year. The gentle conversation of an incoming tide washes over both the sand and senses as it encroaches the beach, stand and watch it come ever onward, an eternal union betwixt the earth and the moon, one older than life itself yet still an experience there for us all to play a minor part in, mortals gathering to witness the infinite. Many of these beaches are bordered by wide, wild swathes of salt marsh, tiny muddy rivulets abound that, in time and like the root system of an ancient oak, disgorge their waters into a main creek that invites the incoming tide into its domain before, all too soon, sending it back again, the tide retreating with only the one vow, that it will, as sure as the sunrise and sunset, be back again.

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

These creeks and reed beds are the haunt of a rich variety of wildlife. You may be lucky enough to hear the plaintive ‘boom’ of the Bittern-and even more fortunate to see one for yourself. Avocets, Sandpipers, Terns of all shape and sizes, and, as the days eventually surrender and become shorter and sharper, the seasonal visit of the Pink-footed Geese with up to 40,000 estimated to choose the mudflats at Snettisham as their roost for the darkest days of winter. Walking along the grassy, occasionally boggy footpaths that cross some of the salt marshes all along the coast, a gentle mist maybe accompanying the visiting tide, it’s easy to recall the old tales of Black Shuck, the legendary devil dog that is said to endlessly wander that part of our coast on a never ending search for his long last master. And maybe too easy at times as the skies darken and mists rise at such times, even the most sceptical can decide to head back to more familiar lanes and byways. Take in a town or two to explore one day when you are able to give time the day off. Kings Lynn, ever changing but a rare delight and an unknown one for many who have yet to discover its noble Hanseatic past, its Custom House and tiny backstreets, many of them full to the brim with history that is both local and national in its importance. Swaffham, known best, perhaps for its Saturday market, as traditional as any you will see anywhere, but also for its collection of exquisite Georgian buildings. A reminder of the towns commercial past as well as the medieval Church of St Peter and Paul, its glorious double hammer-beam angel

EXTERNAL NORFOLK Issue 16 2014

roof testimony to the skills of craftsmen in centuries long gone. Yet Swaffham has its contemporary side as well, the EcoCentre the towns nod to progress, the 300 steps that lead to the top of its wind turbine a well rewarded climb on some days with views that can stretch across the landscape as far as the distant Ely Cathedral. Visit Holt for both its gentle town centre charm as well as the opportunity to ride the steam train to Sheringham, the route there one to beguile those who claimed that Norfolk was ‘very flat’; had Noel Coward ridden the Poppy Line over the wooded hills and through the heights of Kelling Heath and Sheringham Park, maybe he would have revised his ill advised opinion? Or stroll part of the Peddars Way, maybe starting at the paths most northerly point at the coastal village of Holme-next-the-Sea, the nearest settlement to the site of the ancient Seahenge timber circle, a sacred site for the Norfolk folk of the Bronze Age, early devotees of a part of the world where time really can stand still if only you’ll let it. So much to see and explore, so much to take in, absorb, feel. And so much more. We can only ever scratch the surface of possibilities with such a rich choice of destinations and explorations, yet now is the time, with the days still long and the light forgiving that we should take the opportunity to see so much that is new, fresh and rewarding-without venturing out very far at all. THE MASH TUN REVIEW Recently I was lucky enough to have the fabulous Iceni Magazine ask me to attend the launch of a new bar in Norwich, The Mash Tun. I have to say when I received this invite I felt pretty chuffed with myself, after some hard work in the Bloggersphere and Twittersphere I’d finally been given some recognition. The invite looked great and with the words 'Exclusive Opening' pasted on it you couldn’t help feel like you were a VIP...and then I turned up at the event. I took some photos of the outside the location and made my way inside, with a start time of 5pm and with me turning up at 6pm I can only imagine that I’ve really misinterpreted what is classified as being 'fashionably late'. The place was pretty much empty, it was dark inside and the builders and their cliché bums were the force that stood behind the bar. Now, I don’t know what you picture when you see the words 'Exclusive Opening', but what I saw in front of my eyes was certainly not what I had been day dreaming about in the hours before. It really is a shame that The Mash Tun was only 60% through its makeover, because you just couldn’t get any true feeling or indication of what this place is going to be like and what type of clientele it will attract. I know full well that big projects like this have the danger of hitting large hurdles and therefore delays, so I tried to make the most of what could harshly be called a bad situation, and grabbed myself a beer. The Mash Tun has a large beer menu on the wall showing the beers on offer, their brewery, the

alcohol percentage and of course their prices. Although I wouldn’t mind a free drink at an 'Exclusive Opening' I couldn’t complain about the prices because they are very fair for this day and age. I loved the taps they have, you can see the colour of the beer within the tap before it hits the glass, a lovely little novelty which I’m sure would wear off if you became a local within this bar. There is a must try in The Mash Tun though, their Hop Infuser Tap, apparently the only one in the UK! I had a sample and wow, even just smelling this stuff lets you know it’s the real deal. Full of flavour and bite, although as I’m a frequenter of the light beers that are common in pubs and bars I’m not sure how I’d cope with a full pint of this stuff. The next disappointment came in the fact one of the star features of this new place wasn’t ready, The Gin Palace. Although I did some digging and found that this bar upstairs will only serve you doubles in large Spanish bulbous glasses, probably something that will be greatly appealing to you if you’re a big fan of gin.

I managed to grab some of the owners time, Amy, what a wonderful lady. She was very friendly, polite and courteous, and managed to give almost everyone there a little bit of her time. She did very well considering that she must have been asked the same questions over and over again. She had a clear vision of what she hoped to achieve and whilst she was talking to me I could picture how the place might be once it’s complete. She’s created a warm Nordic feel downstairs which will be lovely in the winter with lots of little cosey areas to chill out in with your friends. The Gin Palace is set to have a Bohemian vibe. There’s a large open space which I’m told may accommodate a DJ Booth and the space can cater for the merry few that feel like busting out some moves or giving a little twerk. I didn’t have the opportunity to try some of the food, although I’m told it’s fantastic. You may well have already tried food from these guys before, because instead of developing their own menu at The Mash Tun they have gone into partnership with The Madder Mash Kitchen. Although the food is what you would expect from these guys they have also made some little amendments to make the food more beer orientated to suit The Mash Tun down to the ground.

All in all, I have to say, you have to visit this place at least once. Purely to try something new and have a sip on the beverage that comes out of their hop infuser. I couldn’t possibly say if this will turn into a repeat venue for you, because the place wasn’t a finished article and it would be unfair for me to say either way, and really I guess it just comes down to personal preference at the end of the day. However definitely give it a go and see if you’ve managed to find yourself a new watering hole. Introducing Pepper The Donkey Excitement for new arrival to Redwings’ Caldecott Visitor Centre. Denise - but this will be a gentle process to ensure she is not overwhelmed by all her new donkey friends. Pepper is also receiving a lot of attention from the Redwings veterinary team to ensure any underlying health issues are identified and treated.

This June, Redwings Horse Sanctuary has welcomed the adorable Pepper into their donkey-fold. Pepper was signed over into Redwings’ care having been bullied when living with a group of horses. Knowing the importance of donkey companions to Pepper, her kind owner was very concerned for the little donkey’s wellbeing and so asked Redwings for help. Donkeys are companion animals who form very strong emotional bonds among their own kind. They are also very sensitive souls and are easily stressed. Happily, the 17-year-old Pepper has now settled into a small group of donkeys at the charity’s Caldecott Visitor Centre near Great Yarmouth and is enjoying spending time with pals Molly, Jemima and Ellie. Issue 16 2014

The Final Yarn Frankie Valentine

A darkly comic tale, where P G Wodehouse meets Jerome K Jerome, where worse things might happen at sea, but not on this voyage. CAPTAIN CRAWLEY BIX, aka the OLD MAN, has spent all his life at sea and served on almost every ship in the WhippetSnide line, from the the ill-fated Rose Snide, to the flagship of the fleet, the Susan Snide. With his ragtag crew, CAPTAIN BIX is returning home to Liverpool. But all is not well with this pride of the fleet. The game's afoot as VYVYN K SNIDE, heir and now owner of the line, seeks to make changes which will affect even the crew of the Susan Snide. Coupled with this, CAPTAIN CRAWLEY is also corresponding with a BEATRICE POUCH, currently residing in Tooting Bec Mental Hospital with whom he hopes to cement a lasting union. Author Bio: Born a pessimist in Edinburgh, Frank Valentine was orphaned as a baby, adopted and taken from the comparative safety of Scotland to some prime German targets in England, just in time for him to learn how to run before the bombs began raining down.

the planet. He joined the Merchant Navy and was still sailing the seas and oceans of the world missing almost the entire groovy, swinging, free loving, permissive 1960s, invariably being stuck in the middle of nowhere on board ship, when, at the age of thirty-two, he met and married his wife in five weeks. Moving to rural Norfolk for peace and tranquillity, he discovered he’d married a woman who never stops talking. Likes - sarcasm, cynicism, cats and classical music. Dislikes - too numerous to mention. ISBN: Category: Price: Extent: Size: Rights: Territory: Orders:

Six terrifying years later the war ended, the nightmares took a little longer. As a lad he learned the trumpet with the idea of picking up some extra money playing in one of the local palais, just in time for the dance orchestras to disband, all the dance halls to close down and guitar players to take over

The Final Yarn A book loosely based around a voyage of the merchant ship the ‘Susan Snide’ which takes place in 1956. The story concentrates not on the ship, but the oddball selection of individuals on board who can certainly be described as ‘a motley crew’. The central character is Crawley Bix, the alcoholic captain of the ship, but time is spent developing the characters of the rest of the crew. An introduction to some of the main characters at the start of the book, followed by countless flashbacks & sub-stories which occur during the voyage gradually builds a clear picture of all involved.

Frankie Valentine Some of the incidents that happen (e.g. making the Chief Steward walk the plank because he has sold the ships store of beer & whisky), clearly identify this as a work of fiction. However, I wonder whether some of the tales are (loosely) based on the real life experiences of the author &/or his good friend Ernie Abbey, during a lifetime spent afloat? A book that took some getting into. Will you enjoy it? - persevere (as I did) and I think you will.

Boyzone- BZ20 Tour Thetford Forest

oyzone formed in 1993 when I was just one years old. Their first release was a cover the classic song 'Working my way back to you' but of course went on to have massive hits with 'Love me for a reason', 'Father and Son', 'Words' (BZ first number 1 hit) and of course my favourite song 'Picture of you' (soundtrack from Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie). The band split in 1999 and reformed in 2008. During the course of the band they had 21 Singles in the top 40, 6 Number 1 Singles, 5 Number 1 Albums and have a combined total of 25 million records sold worldwide (as of 2013). The band are everything you want from a boyband - classic songs, good looking guys, punching the air during ballads and charm. And I must say BZ still had the lot!! Firstly we were treated to Kian Egan (formerly of Westlife) who was outstanding. He sang all our favourite WL hits which the crowd enjoyed and loved. Safe to say we were warmed up ready for the boys to come out and rock Thetford. They sang all their classic hits to a crowd of adoring fans who were busy singing and dancing and reliving the 1990s. And I think that's what the tour is all about, a look back at the last 20 years and toasting the next 20 years. The band took us through the years and talked about the fondest memories before talking about the sad passing of Stephen Gately (sadly passed away in 2009). It was clear that the boys still find it incredibly hard performing and talking about Stevo. The most poignant part was then boys thanked us, the fans, for allowing them to come out and do shows throughout the summer and remember their great friend and band member Stevo. Of course I don't remember the band the first time around but after seeing them twice in the past 7 months I think it's safe to say that Ronan, Keith, Mikey & Shane are still every bit adored and we thank them for the past 20 years. I for one say here's to the next 20 years. PAGE

DREAMSCAPE - THE REUNION RESCHEDULED Due to lower ticket sales than first anticipated for Dreamscape - The Reunion (scheduled to take place on Saturday 16th August 2014 at The National Bowl, Milton Keynes.) we have taken the difficult decision we can no longer hold the event at The National Bowl. On a positive note we have been fortunate enough to secure a suitable, alternative venue and have decided to re-schedule and re-locate The Reunion to the stunning Willen Lake Park, Milton Keynes. We have been working very hard with the management at The National Bowl over the last 18 months to make this event happen. When we originally made the official announcement for The Reunion back in January, the support and response from our fans was overwhelming. We anticipated a high volume of ticket sales and a great turnout. However, as many of you will be aware, there have been a high number of music festivals in 2014 all experiencing low ticket sales just as we have. We are sad that we could not reach the ticket sales needed in order to make DREAMSCAPE - THE REUNION work at The National Bowl. However, on a very positive note we at ESP Promotions decided that rather than cancel the event completely leaving 1,000's of our dedicated fans disappointed, we have re-scheduled and re-located the event to Saturday 20th September 2014 to Willen Lake Park which is only 3 miles away from The National Bowl, Milton Keynes. All tickets already purchased for The National Bowl date will be honoured at our new re-scheduled event. Willen Lake is in the heart of Milton Keynes with easy access to the M1 motorway, all major road networks and nearby train stations. Set in 180 acres of park land and water lakes with a ampi-theatre. We all strongly feel that this new venue will better suit our needs and is a better setting for Dreamscape - The Reunion with it's picturesque surroundings, nearby

amenities (There are 2 hotels within walking distance from the park) and create a more relaxed atmosphere. All the tents and their hosts will still be in place at Willen Lake; Accelerated Culture, Whizzkid presents, Ultra Vegas & Data Transmission, the VIP Milwaukees Convention, weekend camping and of course the outdoor stage. We are working very hard to keep exact DJs and Artists on the line-up for this event and this will include some new additions to make The Reunion a truly memorable day. This will be one of the last festivals of the summer and what better way to celebrate 25 years of dance music with our return back to Milton Keynes. We hope you will all support us and come and join us for our home-coming. For all those dedicated and faithful fans we are giving away a free goody bag to those who originally purchased a National Bowl ticket and who choose to use them at our Willen Lake date. Amongst the goodies in the bag will be a limited edition Dreamscape Reunion lanyard, timecards, a CD pack and other festival essentials.

For refunds and more information please refer to our website:

ICENI - HOROSCOPES Issue 16 2014

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Horoscopes For August Aries 21 March - 20 April

Libra 24 September - 23 October

The focus this month can be both light-hearted and intense, as a blend of energies in Leo encourages relaxation, romance and creative exploration. However, shared finances may need careful attention as Mars links with testing and restrictive Saturn. Yet, a practical approach swiftly acted upon, could help free you of anxiety and stress, paving the way for peace of mind.

Your social life increases in activity with both Mercury and Jupiter adding a lively element. Enjoy partying, celebrations, barbecues and general fun. However, on a more serious note, you may be keen to get financial matters sorted, and could even feel pushed into doing so. Once you make a start though, relief can quickly follow.

Taurus 21 April - 21 May

Scorpio 24 October - 22 November

You may find the company of family and friends a positive boon, especially if important matters seem overwhelming at times. A Full Moon in your career sector midmonth, might help you showcase your skills and abilities. Later, relationships or a key partnership could intensify, encouraging the chance of a meaningful breakthrough.

You seem to be in the spotlight and loving it, even though it may clash with a need to uphold your privacy. However, a Sun, Jupiter and Mercury presence at the top of your chart, hints that goals can now be achieved, or perhaps a career move hints at success. Though this might necessitate being courageous, it could prove to be very much worth it.

Gemini 22 May - 21 June

Sagittarius 23 November - 21 December

Confiding in friends and family may be one way to offset the pressures of work, particularly if you find yourself feeling a little on edge at times. Plus, efforts to negotiate and perhaps to work out a compromise could help ease any day-to-day stresses. Later, a Virgo New Moon on August 25th can encourage a DIY blitz or at least a chance to de-clutter.

On the one hand, adventurous options appeal, particularly if they invite a leap of faith. A blend of expansive energies encourages you to consider travel or study options. Yet, besides a chance to enjoy life, you might feel motivated to tackle an ambitious personal project. If so, opt to make a start on or just after the New Moon of 25th August.

Cancer 22 June - 23 July

Capricorn 22 December - 20 January

Feelings run deep as Mars in Scorpio heightens desires and intensifies a romantic attraction. However, try to avoid manipulating a crucial situation, or allowing someone to do the same to you. Along with this, a focus on the sign of Leo enhances your financial savvy. This may see you motivated to explore money-making options as a way to earn extra income.

Shared finances look positive, with a chance to explore ways of making your money work harder for you. August 2nd can be a good day for applying for a loan or extra funds, as you might be considered. Later, you could feel like adding to your skill-set, perhaps by upgrading your knowledge or getting a qualification that betters your prospects.

Leo 24 July - 23 August

Aquarius 21 January - 19 February

You may be in your element this month, particularly as Jupiter, newly in your sign, can bring confidence and a sense of adventure. Yet, life at home could be complicated. Perhaps you’ll need to untangle knotted feelings by being open to compromise. Later, a New Moon in Virgo can spotlight an opportunity to purchase a coveted item.

Relationships may be a source of fun, romance and financial good fortune, as Jupiter continues to find its feet in Leo. People can seem to support you, and this could lead to the potential for lucrative opportunities. August 25th offers the chance to make a fresh financial start, plus you might find yourself in the spotlight for all the right reasons.

Virgo 24 August - 23 September

Pisces 20 February - 20 March

You seem to be in a natural phase in which relaxing and recharging your batteries could be helpful. Dreams can be vivid, especially around the time of the Full Moon on June 10th, and one might contain useful guidance. Later, Mercury in your sign, along with a New Moon on June 25th, encourages a new start that could prove quite liberating.

There seems to be a lot of positive activity associated with your lifestyle sector that can heighten the feel-good factor. Let your creativity flourish and you could be rewarded by being given more work or money. Later, the New Moon in Virgo enhances the potential in a key relationship. Whatever your status, a new beginning may be possible, Pisces.
