We also have our mouth-watering monthly recipe from our resident chef – Eric Snaith that has a very autumnal feel, whilst being super healthful with plenty of nuts and seeds. For those of you looking to start the new school year by eating better or keeping fit, you can do so by either checking out our fitness articles by Josh Mann or by attending the free activities that are offered in our region through ‘Fun & Fit Norfolk’. The end of September also sees the annual ‘Be Prepared’ week, promoting safety in our fabulous region. With so much bad weather this past year they will be focusing on how to deal with not only a bad weather situation, such as flooding, but also first aid, car accidents and online safety. If being online is something you enjoy, why not check out our guide to Instagram written by the fabulous Paul Kirk, you can also check out the back issues for more help and advice on social media by visiting www.icenimagazine.co.uk.

Thought Of The Month August Bank Holidays...stay at home. Ever since I was young boy or at least as long as I can remember each bank holiday it's rained, well actually poured down. And of course we'd either go bowling, go to the cinema or bake a cake. This August bank holiday was no different we planned to go to Cambridge and of course it poured down. So we did what the majority of people probably did - sat at home watching Only Fools and Horses (Margate one...featuring sunshine) which was hilarious and made the day. To sum up...we were ‘plonkers’ to think it wouldn't rain and plan never to make another plan on a bank holiday. By Alex Wiseman

REDWINGS Issue 17 2014

WELCOME TO THE WORLD TEENY TUCKER! Tiny foal causes huge excitement at Redwings Horse Sanctuary Tucker

orn on Saturday 26th July, Tucker has already brought great joy to staff at Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s headquarters in Norfolk. Tucker the spotted Miniature Shetland is a titchy 43cm tall - that’s less than 17 inches! He weighs just 10kg. He was so named on behalf of a Redwings supporter who had sadly lost her husband and asked for a foal to be named in his memory. Despite his size he has already made a huge impression on the veterinary team and care staff at the centre. After a healthy birth Tucker was brought into the veterinary unit at Redwings’ Hapton site on Sunday as he was a bit weak and was struggling to stand, but following some rest in the stables Tucker is growing stronger by the hour.

and following a few days building his strength he is now most definitely full of energy! He may well be the smallest foal we’ve ever had here at Redwings.” Tucker’s mum Beau arrived at Redwings in foal as part of a group of Miniature Shetlands. They were brought to Redwings from an owner in Essex who had been struggling to cope with their care. It is hoped that once mother and baby are back to full strength they’ll take up permanent residence at Redwings’ Ada Cole visitor centre in Harlow so the public can come and marvel at Tucker’s tiny size too (open daily, free entry)! Redwings provides direct care to over 1500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules with a further 500 living out in loving guardian homes across the country. Please visit www.redwings.org.uk or call 01508 481000 for more information. Keep up to date with all the latest news about Tucker on the charity’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/RedwingsHorseSanctuary.

Subsequently, Tucker and his mother have been turned out into a paddock that is still within sight of the veterinary unit – and his devoted fans! Teeny Tucker can now be seen frolicking and darting about his new home, followed by a fair few naps. He also recently met office dog Rosie the Westie, who is about his equivalent in height! Commenting on the little foal’s arrival, Redwings Chief Executive Lynn Cutress said: “Tucker is an absolute delight and it is lovely to see how this little chap has already captured the hearts of so many at the Sanctuary. He is feeding well and resting contentedly by his mother’s side,

REDWINGS Issue 17 2014

A Rescue Pony From Essex Has Been Declared Supreme Champion (Overall Winner) At A Large Hertfordshire Show. Redwings Noel, a grey Welsh X Arab, and his rider Guardian Hayley Ward recently took part in the 70th anniversary Kimpton Horse Show (27 July). The title was the most recent in a string of successes since Noel was rehomed by Redwings Ada Cole in 2003. Noel’s placement with Hayley is part of the Redwings’ Guardian scheme which sees suitable horses and ponies rehomed but remaining in the charity’s ownership and responsibility. Noel’s show success is remarkable as his start in life was very troubled. He was rescued by Ada Cole Memorial Stables (as it was known before merging with Redwings in 2005) in 1998 as a two-year-old, along with his companion Mistletoe. Both horses were found abandoned and in very poor condition having been left to fend for themselves while their owner was in prison. When signed over into the care of the Sanctuary, it was decided that Noel would be happiest as part of a loving, active family.

inside out and have an unbreakable bond. To win the Supreme at the Kimpton Horse Show was incredible. I would like to give a huge thank you to Redwings Ada Cole for giving me the opportunity to take on such a smashing pony - especially one they worked so hard to save and care for. The work they do is truly amazing”. Redwings provides direct care to over 1500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules with a further 500 living out in loving guardian homes across the country. Please visit www.redwings.org.uk or call 01508 481000 for more information.

Hayley became Noel’s Guardian when he was five years old and soon they were jumping and competing together, with their first success at a show Ada Cole Memorial Stables then ran. It was the start of a succession of competition wins. “Noel, now 17 years old, is a true champion both in his competition success and in his relationship with his Guardian,” explains Redwings Operation Manager Rachel Angell. “Hayley represents the perfect Guardian and all that the Redwings Guardianship scheme stands for - providing neglected and mistreated equines with a safe and happy home for life, where they are loved and given a second chance”. “Noel is one in a million,” adds Hayley. “I can’t describe the pleasure I have in giving a home to this cheeky little lad. We know each other

KEYS AUCTIONEERS Issue 17 2014

Keys | Fine Art Auctioneers ‘If music be the food of love, play on!’ may be one of the more famous lines from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night however the love of music, and the items associated with it, are extremely popular and often very collectible. 1950s and 1960s music magazines such as Melody Maker can often be worth considerable amounts when they are offered for sale at auction while original musical scores, signatures from famous musicians and singers and memorabilia from superstars such as Elvis are all desirable. While the market for sheet music and for vinyl records is quite unpredictable and patchy, other areas such as music magazines are increasing in value. Keys Auctioneers will be including a specialist section in their November Book & Ephemera auction on 20th and 21st which will include musical and theatrical interest. With entries still being invited for sale until the end of October, of particular interest are 18th and 19th century theatre programs and posters which, in recent auctions, are proving to be of increasing interest to collectors both local, national and international with prices for some items more than doubling in recent years. Keys Book Department’s next sale is scheduled for September 25/26th and, while entries for this have closed, the sale will include a large and important collection of rowing memorabilia which has not been offered for sale before at auction. Included in this are books, medals and rowing cups along with prints and other items of rowing interest.

Issue 17 2014

Gossy THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY JEREMY GOSS, WITH EDWARD COUZENS-LAKE FOREWORD BY MICK DENNIS ‘Your time will come’ This is the story of former Norwich City footballer Jeremy Goss. Gossy is, of course, most famous for the memorable goals he scored during the club’s UEFA Cup campaign in 1993, as well as the part he played in Mike Walker’s entertaining side. A competitive and hard-working midfielder, Gossy’s football career reached its zenith with his home and away strikes against Bayern Munich during that UEFA Cup run, a BBC Goal of the Month award for his volley against Leeds United at Elland Road, and perhaps his own favourite footballing memory, the last goal scored in front of Liverpool’s famous standing Kop in April 1994. But his rise to national fame was hardly a sudden one. He’d been a Norwich City player for a decade before any of those goals were scored, and set an unofficial club record for the highest number of reserve team games played. Hard and difficult times in his life on either side of his ‘fifteen minutes of fame’ make his story a compelling one - sometimes funny, occasionally frustrating and, on one occasion, touched by genuine personal heartbreak. THE CO-AUTHOR Edward Couzens-Lake is the author of Norwich City: The Seventies, Norwich City Miscellany, Fantasy Football and Norwich City’s Greatest

Games. A passionate supporter of Norwich City, Edward regularly contributes to the Canaries’ official matchday programme as well as numerous other sporting and lifestyle publications. He contributes regular features to numerous magazines and other publications, both hard copy and digitally published. He is currently researching and writing his first novel. Edward currently lives in reluctant temporary exile near Chichester, but divides his time between Sussex and Norfolk. BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION Publication: 28 August 2014 Price: £15.99 ISBN: 978-1-4456-1901-9 Size: 235 x 156 mm Binding: Paperback Extent: 192 pages + 16 col. 20-30 illustrations Rights: World, all languages

Gossy - The Autobiography Jeremy Goss, With Edward Couzens-Lake - Foreword By Mick Dennis A refreshing change, when compared to the ‘usual’ autobiographies of professional footballers. Not the tales of scandal & almost unbelievable exploits, (which are probably dreamt up by a ghostwriter), but the genuine down to earth experiences of a ‘real’person. The reader gains a true insight into the real world of the vast majority of professional footballers, which is very different to that experienced by the very small number of ‘multi-millionaire superstars’. A book I thoroughly enjoyed & would recommend to anyone with an interest in football. PAGE

The Diary of a Norfolk Family.

To the people reading my column who think I’m not all the ticket, I would just like to say… okay, you may have a point, but it’s not my fault. Crazy runs in my family. Take my Dad for example, who couldn’t help himself when it came to adopting the accent Above: Keri Beevis of whoever he was talking to. This wasn’t so bad when the person came from Norfolk or London, but it did used to get embarrassing when he’d starting speaking with a Jamaican or an Australian accent or in broken English to the Spanish waiter. I recall the cringe worthy time I had a friend over who had never met my parents and Daddy dearest spent the entire evening talking with a thick American twang (for reasons known only to himself). Particularly embarrassing when my friend started asking me at the end of the evening why I’d never told him about the American side of my family. I am Norfolk through and through! When my mum isn’t pressing the emergency red button in the loo on the plane – just to see what it does – or listening to the same Will Young track on loop 20 times, then complaining that all his songs sound the same, she is trying to send emails. I say ‘emails’, actually it was just the one rather long one that had to go to about 12 recipients. Dear old Mum didn’t realise you can send to multiple addresses all in one go, she also didn’t know about copy and paste. You can see where this is going, can’t you? Yup… 12 emails all typed out in full, followed by the complaint that this Internet mail thing is very longwinded. Then of course there was the time we got her a DVD player and she spent an hour watching the 30 second trailer on the main menu screen. My brother won’t wear green pants. He has this paranoid fear that bad stuff happens to him when he wears green underwear. Enough said. Then there is my sister who once owned a toy tortoise she insisted on calling Titty, much to my mum’s chagrin. One night she left the stuffed toy at the bottom of the garden. It was almost dinner and Mum told her to go fetch it in case it rained overnight. My sister, being about 7 at the time, obviously thought toy tortoises could move themselves, so spent ten minutes at the door shouting loudly... ‘Titty? Titty? Come here tits!’ Mum never sent her to get her toys again. It’s not just my immediate family who are mad. Not long after 9/11, we went on a family holiday and took my aunt. Now understandably airport security were a little bit antsy about potential weapons being on board the plane, but my aunt thought they were being very unreasonable when they took away the knife she had snuck from the villa and packed with her crackers and cheese to have for her lunch.

The journey from Norwich Airport to the Hotel Tropicana in Tunisia went without a hitch and was quite a joyful experience. The flight left at 6.30am and by 3pm the children were in the hotel pool splashing about, and making new friends. Within twenty four hours everyone was relaxed and being in North Africa it felt as if we were in a different world. By day two we had got to know the Bertram’s from Exeter, a wonderful family with two young children like ourselves. Their father was quick witted and their mother graceful, and while the children spent all day in the pool having endless fun; one of us would act like a meerkat keeping a watchful eye on them as the other three relaxed on the sun lounges soaking up the sun, reading, or just chatting. In the evening we sat under the stars by the poolside bar enjoying a drink and finding out about each other lives as the little ones ran about, and played, carefree without a worry in the world. It was a nice mixture of friendship while at the same time still having enough space and doing out own things without being in each other’s way. By the end of the holiday when both families had to say their good byes there was a tinge of sadness in the air. The flight back to Norwich was as easy as the flight out. We were picked up at our hotel at 7.15 in the morning after having breakfast as the rising sun was quickly heating up the day, and by 2.45pm we were back in our home having lunch as the sun carried on shinning outside. You can’t beat flying form your local airport when everything goes to plan and as we slowly get back in the daily routine of life, and the family holiday becomes just a fond memory, I’m already looking forward to next year’s brochure for Norwich airport.

ICENI - TUITION Issue 17 2014

Fosters Solicitors Training the Law firm of the future Fosters are a Solicitors firm that understands that links to the community are not just financial, or charity based. We are aware of the difficulties faced by young people in obtaining employment and training. By forging links with local Job Centres, Schools and Lowestoft College to offer work placements, we have offered large numbers of young people either a career at Fosters, or the chance to experience life in a busy legal practice. A scheme offering internships with Law students at the University of East Anglia enables 2 law students a year to gain a month’s work experience in our Crime and Defence Team. The team also organises a ‘Mock Trial’ programme, which was rolled out across local schools as part of their citizenship programme, with lawyers attending, providing training, and adjudicating on the trial. Over the last year Fosters has been working in partnership with Norwich for Jobs, a community initiative, which aims to create 1,000 jobs for young people in Norwich. Four young people from Norwich have landed their first jobs at Fosters thanks to the Jobcentre Plus Scheme and are now in paid roles. Marguerite Russell from Fosters said “Experience is essential for youngsters to get their foot on the ladder, I was happy to provide the candidates with work experience opportunities and have found the experience hugely beneficial.” Whether it be offering an opportunity to experience working in the Law, or creating jobs for young people around us, training at Fosters is another way we cement our links with the heart of our community.

“With the help of Thomas I understood the entire course in a few lessons” A battleground of youth in the hundreds of years past transforms the image of young lads in muddy dug-outs and women struggling against patriarchy to gain equal social standing, to that of those sat behind a scratchedout examination desks sweating profusely as they try to distinguish figure from figure, fact from fact.

one tuition. I saw the potential to gain superb grades in our FIRST meet, and we set out a game plan from there.

On 14th August 2014 we once again saw this battleground of youth floundered in the form of university acceptance and A Level results. Tears, joy, happiness, scorn – the day held it all for many. I remember not too long ago I was in the same position. My present situation however - tutoring GCSE and A Level History and Politics in the greater Norwich area.

1. Cultivating a positive framework for exam participation

What makes a university choose you? What transforms students’ potential to tangible success? What makes them well-rounded individuals outside the four walls of classrooms and school halls?

Is all hope lost for those who don’t seek help early? Certainly NOT! Ed is just one of many tutees around Norfolk who have sought help at late stages and undergone remarkable transformations, turning seemingly inherent exam anxiety into almost inevitable success. This has put Ed in a prime position for his upcoming university application and continuing A Level success.

Assembling all these parts is a struggle, when the greatest challenge you face is getting out of bed on a Monday morning. Students require a base of good grades to support them! After all, this is the new beginning of their educational journey. They need the transferable skills and opportunities that enhance them as individuals; to become more than a one-page statement on the computer. Private tuition provides pupils of GCSE and A Level with the opportunity to benefit from tailored one-to-one sessions with a guaranteed support system through their exam period. Plaice, Girolles, White Beans, Salsify, Nuts and Seeds Serves 4

Eric Snaith Head Chef at Titchwell Manor

This dish would work well with any white Fish. The Girolles can be substituted with a different wild Mushroom, but Girolles are a favourite of mine. If you haven’t tried Salsify it’s a really delicious root vegetable that is very popular in France, definitely worth searching out. Also, the Nuts and Seeds are really versatile – they’re great just tossed through salad. For the Nuts and Seeds: 10g whole Almonds 10g peeled Pistachios 10g Macademia nuts 1g Fennel seeds 1g Pumpkin seeds 1g Sunflower seeds 1g Poppy seeds 1g Maldon salt

Toast all the ingredients in an oven at 180c until the Nuts start to colour, allow to cool, then chop in a food processor or by hand.

For the Salsify: 2 sticks of Salsify ½ a Lemon 100g Butter 300ml Water

Heat a frying pan on a medium heat. Add a little Vegetable oil, remove the Salsify from the water and fry on a low heat. When they start to colour, add 10g of Butter, when the Butter stops bubbling add a little more, continue until the Salsify is coloured and soft in the middle. Season with table Salt.

For the Mushrooms and white Beans: 1 small tin of Cannellini beans 180g Girolle Mushrooms, washed 1tbsp of finely diced Shallot 120ml white Wine 250ml Cream 50g Butter 1 wedge of Lemon

Heat a large frying pan on a high heat until it starts to smoke. Add a little Vegetable oil, followed by the Mushrooms and sauté until Squeeze the Lemon juice into the Water. Peel they start to colour. Add the Butter and the Salsify with a potato peeler, cut into 2 inch Shallots and continue to cook. Add the Beans, pieces and immediately put in the water. add the Wine and reduce by half. Next add PAGE

ICENI - FOOD & DRINK Issue 17 2014

Tell us about ‘Station Bistro’? We opened our doors back in March 2011, prior to this the restaurant was known as the Brief Encounter. Part of the interior is based on the film; with train carriage seating to make it feel as if you’re on-board an old train, first class of course! And complete with luggage racks! However, it was a new beginning for us, and we wanted a new fresh name; bistro refers to a small family run restaurant, exactly what we are and it is run by my husband Simon & my mother-in-law, Jenny and me.

What’s special about your restaurant? We are located on the main Norwich to Cambridge line, on the historic train station at Wymondham. The setting is unique as the station retains many of its original features, is well maintained with flowers on the platform outside, and we also provide a good take-away service to commuters. We have the carriage room as mentioned above, plus a larger dining area providing seating for an additional 32 people. In here we also prepare our freshly ground coffees and have a tempting homemade cake display. You’ll find our open fires lit in the colder months but mind you don’t spill your teas, as the high speed trains pass through! Our rooms are also available to hire for all your needs, whether it’s a business breakfast, a celebration, or maybe you need to organise a wake. We add a personal and special touch.

What else do we do? Open every day, we provide great quality homemade dishes. From a superb cooked breakfast to traditional Sunday Roast lunch. We also have a licenced bar. Weekends get very busy, so it is advisable to book.

What’s new at the restaurant? We have a new bistro menu up and running and the food is looking delicious. We offer traditional dishes still but felt we needed to update the menu with some modern ideas too. It’s always a gamble when you change anything in a business, and we have made a few tweaks here and there by listening to our customer feedback, but so far, so good! From Friday 19th September, we’ll also be open every Friday & Saturday evening for drinks and meals, with bookings up to 9pm. You can even arrive & depart by train, so no need to drive!

Our Christmas menu is now available for bookings & we’re open Christmas day with a special menu for that day.

History We were established in 1999 and running our family business with the ambitions of providing a high class south Asian dining experience to food lovers. Through the gentle introduction of more and more authentic dishes from the subcontinent, more deserting palates have developed, many have discovered Spice Zone. Indian food is different from the rest of the world not only in taste but also in cooking methods. It reflects a perfect blend of various cultures and ages. Foods of Spice Zone are better known for its spiciness. But one must not forget that every spice used in our dishes carries some or other nutritional as well as medicinal properties. At Spice Zone we present various dishes as a sample of the variety of classic south Asian food found across the Indian sub-continent. We augment this with a series of specially perfected dishes created by our dedicated long serving chefs with a common slogan believe in quality. We are involved with the local community and sponsor Wymondham Football and Rugby clubs and are also in talks with the Cricket club.

The Tiffin Club Was set-up by Keith Vaz and his colleagues in parliament in 2005/2006. The competition receives cross party support and has steadily grown over the years to reach most parts of the UK. The restaurants that reach the final 12 all come away with a Tiffin Club chef’s jacket and all in all it’s a pretty good way to help support the industry. The competition pits the best south-east Asian takeaways across the country, nominated by their local MPs, against

each other. The Lime takeaway The Newmarket branch of Spice Zone, once again successfully gained its place as the regional finalist, in a repeat of last year. Last year, 83 restaurants were nominated by local MPs around the UK, with chef Ainsley Harriet joining the judging panel.

Ways to Help With Your Work/Life Balance By Susan Leigh There are times when our commitment to a positive work/life balance can be affected and we start to feel stressed, resentful and frustrated with life. Our time may be required to deal with an urgent work situation, staffing levels may be inadequate or we find we are needed Susan Leigh to intervene in a domestic matter and we become stressed as we're pulled in many different directions. If this is an occasional or emergency situation we may be able to accommodate it for a while. However, if this becomes a way of life, goes on for too long or becomes our usual fire-fighting response we may need to look at other options to support a better work/life balance and bring some peace of mind and harmony back into our lives. Hypnotherapy can help reintroduce a better sense of balance and the ability to cope in a happier, more positive, less reactive way. • Balance in life starts by taking care of you, looking after yourself nutritionally, stopping for regular, healthy food breaks, water, exercise, fresh air and fun. When we're stressed and out of balance it can affect our quality of sleep, libido, sense of humour, positive perspective, ability to cope. Start by weighing up what's really important to you, what you need to support your ability to take good care of you and enable you to maintain a healthy balance in the different areas of your life. Recognise that there may be a need for additional help. Consider paying for cleaning, laundry, gardening to be done by someone else. Delegate tasks or ask for help and even if they're not done to your exacting standards, relax and appreciate the input. • Learn to say 'no' sometimes. It can be tempting to appear ready and willing to do everything that's asked of you, happy to take on more and more work or accept invitations to every function you're invited to but sometimes it's important to weigh up the pros and cons of these different requests. Small businesses understandably often have a feast or famine mindset. When work requests come in it is often automatic to accept them because of the requirement to earn money and establish good relationships with existing or potentially new customers and clients. But learning to say 'no' sometimes can help you to use your time and energy in the best possible way, to look after your existing

business well, focus on what's right for you, prioritise, give each piece of work, offer or opportunity your full consideration and focus clearly on how it meets your longterm goals. 'No' can teach co-workers, family and friends not to rely on you for everything and, if necessary, to become a little more independent in their thinking and more confident in their own abilities. It also teaches them that while at times you may be amenable to their suggestions, go along with their wishes and/ or demands, you are also deserving of respect, entitled to have opinions of your own and have a say in any decisions, plans and arrangements. • Do what feels right for you. Are your motives on track or are you over-committing in order to be seen as popular, busy or indispensable? Take some quiet time and check what your gut, your inner voice is saying. Taking on too much or agreeing to do things we don't really want to do may take us out of our comfort zone and encourage us to develop and grow, but the motivation to maintain that effort comes from the excitement, enthusiasm and positivity we feel in following genuine, heartfelt goals, hopes and dreams. • Work/life balance includes putting yourself in the diary on a regular basis, planning quiet time, time to read a book, to go for a pleasant walk in the countryside or to the beach. Arrange a spa day where you have to leave your phone behind and are unavailable to be contacted unless there's a real emergency. Make time to enjoy your hobbies and interests. • Decide to finish work each day at a reasonable time. Turn off your work phone and computer. Be strict about it, dedicating time for yourself, your family and friends. These personal areas deserve to be treated as important, respected and valued by you in order to thrive and enjoy a significance in your life, to enjoy a healthy work/life balance. Susan Leigh is a Counsellor and Hypnotherapist who works with stressed individuals to promote confidence and self belief, with couples experiencing relationship difficulties to improve communications and understanding and with business clients to support the health and motivation levels of individuals and teams. ICENI - FITNESS Issue 17 2014

Fat Does Not Make You FAT! What makes us Fat? We get fat because we are consuming more energy than we need. Any excess calories in any format that the body cannot use will be stored as fat for energy. This is why drinking excess alcohol and processed/fast foods is a quick way to get fat. Exposing yourself regularly to toxins from both processed foods and man made products such as shampoo’s, chemicals, pesticides, pollution etc, can make you fat. These toxins are pulled from the blood stream and stored within fat cells. The more toxins you consume, the more likely you are to store fat. Eating Fat will not make you Fat – When it’s Natural Fat Sources of natural fats: • Meats • Nuts, • Avocado • Hummous, • Full fat yoghurts • Butter (not margarine etc). Dietary fat is needed by the body. Every cell in your body is made from cholesterol and fat, including your skin. So if you want better skin and less cellulite - Eat full fat products! Full Fat vs Low Fat Foods Low fat products digest faster in the body, raising blood sugar levels quicker, which means more chance of fat storage. If you take yoghurt as an example, to make it fat free, the fat needs to be substituted for another ingredient. Have you guessed what the substitute ingredient is? The fat is replaced with either sugars or additives to bulk out the product. Saturated Fats: Are they bad for you? Saturated, natural fats are crucial for hormone production, cell health, reducing stress levels

and are not the cause of high cholesterol and heart disease. It’s inflammation in the arteries and blood cells that are the actual causes of heart disease and heart attacks. This is by consuming a largely processed diet, containing lots of sugars, stress and toxins. What should you do? If you want to improve both appearance and health, don’t listen to people who recommend low fat this and that, especially if they’re not in the shape you want to be, or cannot backup their reasons.

• Keep protein levels high - Eat lots of meats, eggs and fish; • Eat plenty of vegetables - The more greens, the better; • Eat plenty of natural fats - Avocado’s, coconut, organic butters, full fat dairy; • Drink lots of water; • Keep alcohol, sugars and stress to a minimum. If done often, I can guarantee that you’ll improve all round health and body composition.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Issue 17 2014

Using Instagram For Business Instagram has largely been seen as a 'personal' social media platform but it has much to offer a business and with over 200 million active users and one of the top ten social platforms it's not to be underestimated. Let's be clear though, Instagram isn't for everyone. Instagram describes itself as making it easy for you to capture what’s happening in your world and share those moments instantly through the use of photos or short videos (max 15secs). Over 90% of Instagram users are under 35 years old and 68% of it’s users are female which makes it ideal for brands who've got a product or service that appeals to the 18-34 year old markets - like food & drink manufacturers, restaurants, clothing brands, attractions and even florists, gardeners, artists, wedding photographers etc.

Have clear goals As with any form of social media it's important to set your goals for the platform. Firstly determine if or how Instagram fits into your overall brand marketing strategy - there’s no point in being on a platform if your audience isn’t already using it. Formulate your goals - is it to increase awareness of your product, shift perceptions, reach a new audience or something else? Then structure your photos/videos around this plan. So you might want to promote your brand with the following: • Sneak peeks at your new product launch • Step by step processes • Behind the scenes look at your company • Instigating a photo contest between your followers • Emotive product placement - ie. what the perceived benefits of using your product are, how it makes people feel - get into the culture of your audience.

SOCIAL MEDIA Issue 17 2014

Setting up your account This is really straight forward either sign-up on the website or download the App. Choose an account name that's ideally your business name so that it's easily recognised - and try to make sure this is consistent across all your social media accounts.

Best time to publish There's been lots of research about then's best to publish but personally, I believe that, as your followers are likely to be individuals you'll want to engage with them when they've got spare time so evenings and weekends are probably best. Test this for a month or so and evaluate your efforts.

Try using your brand's logo or a graphic symbol for your profile photo - just bear in mind it will be cropped into a circle and appear as a 150 x 150 pixel image - so it needs to be legible at small sizes, especially on smartphones.

Analytics So how can you analyse this? Well, there's lots of third party application out there that'll give you a variety of data on your account. Try 'Iconosquare', http://iconosquare.com/ it's a free and very compressive set of tools which can analyse your account, interactions, engagement rates, popular times and much more. Don't forget though for Analytics to be successful you need to be consistent and regular with publishing photos/videos.

Don't forget to enable 'notifications' so you can see what people are saying about you and sharing with their followers. Sharing Like other social media platforms you can make finding and sharing your photo/video easier. The simplest way is to use #hashtags - these can be searched via Instagram's search. It's recommended, for your existing followers, to restrict hashtags to five or less but, in contrast, the more hashtags you add to a photo/video the wider audience it'll be seen by - so it's a compromise between follower satisfaction and audience exposure. It's also worth discovering what hashtags are trending on Instagram and creating interesting unique content around those. Keep accompanying descriptions short and where possible ask questions to your followers to hopefully get follower engagement. You can also 'tag' your photos or videos with their location or use the 'Add People' feature to include relevant people in your posts. Don't forget to also 'like' other peoples posts that you find interesting or even comment on their posts. This helps broaden your audience. A relatively new feature is the ability to send an Instagram post to specific Instagram users using the 'Direct' feature. Because of their specific nature Posts sent with Instagram Direct can't be shared through Instagram to other sites like Facebook or Twitter, and you also can't tag people or use hashtags in these shared posts. Photos Photos on Instagram are proportionally square, when you take a photo or select one from your photo album you'll see the square grid appear over your photo so you can determine which portion of your photo you want to use, then select an optional photo filter (use these sparingly) and publish.

Finding customers For this you have to use the #hashtags to search for trending subjects or keywords surrounding your product/service then follow and engage with people talking about them. Linking accounts Although I'm not a huge fan of this Instagram gives you the option of posting to Facebook and Twitter as well, but the results are varied. On Facebook your pictures will look exactly the same as they do on Instagram - with your description, links, and even hashtags. On Twitter images are not viewable straight away but are displayed as a link which then take you Instagram. Summary So that's a quick overview of Instagram for business. It may not be for everyone and like any social media platform you need to determine whether it fits into your marketing strategy, if your audience is active on it and if you have the time to dedicate to it.

The Dolly Parton Show

Diss Corn Hall is pleased to announce that The Dolly Parton Show will be at the Corn Hall on Saturday 20th September at 7.30pm.

The Dolly Parton Story is a two hour journey through the sensational career of one of country music’s most successful ladies. Dolly Parton’s career has spanned over 50 years and her most celebrated material features in this show, from her early country classics such as ‘Coat of Many Colours’ and ‘Joshua’, through to the later smash hits such as ‘Jolene’, ‘Islands in the Stream’, ‘I Will Always Love You’ and ‘9 to 5’. Andrea Pattison has been a professional singer for many years and in that time, many people have commented on her similarity in sound and style to Dolly Parton. As a life long fan of Dolly’s, Andrea always took this as a huge compliment, but it was only recently that she decided to use that aspect of her talent to reach a wider audience. SAM SWEENEY’S FIDDLE: MADE IN THE GREAT WAR Diss Corn Hall Wednesday 24th September 8pm

In 2009 Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with Bellowhead, bought a violin in Oxford. It had all the appearance of a new instrument but the label inside gave the date 1915 and the name Richard S Howard. Research revealed that the violin had been made - but never finished - by a luthier and some-time music hall performer from Leeds called Richard Spencer Howard. He had been conscripted in 1915 at the age of 35 and two years later was killed during the battle of Messines Ridge. His violin had been left unfinished in his workshop. The pieces were given to his daughter Rose in a manila envelope, as a memory of her father. She kept them all her life. On her death they were sent to an auction house. The parts were bought and the violin was finally finished by luthier Roger Claridge in 2007. The fiddle was then placed in the window of an Oxford music shop where it was spotted by Sam. Discovery of the history behind the fiddle has inspired Sam to create a multi-media performance telling the incredible story of the fiddle which took nearly 100 years to complete, to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I. Collaborating with award-winning story-teller Hugh Lupton, fellow Bellowhead band mate Paul Sartin and acclaimed concertina player Rob Harbron, as well as Bellowhead lighting designer Emma Thompson who has developed set, projections and lighting for the show, MADE IN THE GREAT WAR will bring the reality of World War I into 2014, as Sam performs the show with the actual fiddle made by nonreturning World War I soldier Richard Howard. Sam Sweeney’s Fiddle: Made In The Great War is supported by funding from Arts Council England and the English Folk Dance & Song Society.

Tickets £15 / Concessions £13 Tickets can be purchased online at www.disscornhall.co.uk and through the Box Office on 01379 652241
