Thought Of The Month

By Alex Wiseman

Moving house Is moving house the most stressful thing in the world? I reckon it could be. Even changing your address with companies is a headache. The best part is the 'mass clear out', I've had 4 trips to the dump and counting. The most exciting part is the sense of a new beginning... a new start. But fear not you don't need to move to start a fresh beginning. But I do confirm that it is stressful!!

Fosters Solicitors Ghost signatures on documents may come back to haunt you

Gordon Ramsey the TV chef and presenter will have had cause to curse himself following the decision in the case of Ramsey v Love 2015. His company Gordon Ramsay Holdings International Ltd (GRHI) a company which Gordon Ramsey controlled, took a lease of premises. Another company which he controlled called Gordon Ramsay Holdings Ltd (GRH) and Gordon Ramsay himself agreed to act as guarantors and/or to indemnity. The lease had apparently been signed as a deed by Mr Ramsay and witnessed by Christopher Hutcheson , who was a director of GRHI and Mr Ramsay's father-in-law. In July 2011 a Mr Love acquired the reversion of the premises. He looked to Mr Ramsey to meet the terms of the guarantee and indemnity.

Mr Ramsay told Mr Love he was not bound by the guarantee because he did not sign the deed. His signature had been placed on that document by means of a signature writing machine operated by or under the direction of Mr Hutcheson. Mr Ramsay said that Mr Hutcheson did not have authority to place Mr Ramsay's apparent signature on the document. It was accepted that if Mr Ramsay had operated the machine, the signature would have been valid. Therefore, the questions raised were: Did Mr Ramsay know about the guarantee and indemnity? Did Mr Hutcheson have authority to commit Mr Ramsay to the guarantee and indemnity? ➼

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Authority of agent to sign documents A key point of the case was whether or not Mr Hutcheson had authority to commit Mr Ramsay to a personal guarantee and indemnity which he may not have been aware of. The case discussed in detail whether or not, as a matter of fact, Mr Ramsay knew the liability existed. It was agreed that Mr Ramsay did not generally know the details of all business transactions entered into by the group companies, even when entered into by Mr Ramsay personally. Mr Hutcheson did not routinely inform Mr Ramsay about matters of detail and Mr Ramsay accepted he would neither expect to know everything and that he was not kept informed about all transactions. As Mr Hutcheson was also Mr Ramsay's father-inlaw, there was an additional element of trust in their relationship. The Judge found that Mr Ramsay had agreed a general policy with Mr Hutcheson that where a landlord of a prospective premises was not satisfied with the covenant from one of the group companies, Mr Ramsay would be prepared to give a personal guarantee. The judge also found that Mr Ramsay was enthusiastic enough about this particular lease that on the evidence if he had been asked to give a personal guarantee it was likely he would have agreed. There was no limitation on Mr Hutcheson’s general authority to act for the group companies. Mr Hutcheson had Mr Ramsay's authority to put his signature on documents as a director of GRH and of GRHI. However, the question was whether Mr Hutcheson also had authority to bind Mr Ramsay personally. In course of dealings, Mr Hutcheson did seem to have extended authority to make contracts on behalf of Mr Ramsay but this authority would not extend to non-business or domestic matters. The court ruled the guarantee and indemnity, although personal, was by its nature a business-related matter since it was required to acquire a lease for premises which the company and Mr Ramsay were keen to acquire. In committing Mr Ramsay, Mr Hutcheson was acting on the general authority conferred upon him by Mr Ramsay, and that extended to agreeing a personal guarantee where the business required it. Mr Ramsay was held to be bound by the terms of the guarantee and indemnity. The ghost signature It was accepted that if Mr Ramsay had operated the ghost signing machine, the signature would have been effective. For the purpose of signing and creating the document (in this case a guarantee and indemnity), when operated with authority express or implied a ghost signature from a machine will still be effective.

FOSTERS SOLICITORS Issue 22 2015

A point legal point was argued with regard to the execution requirements which differ between a guarantee and an indemnity. If a document constitutes a guarantee, the provisions set out in the Statute of Frauds 1677 apply. Section 4 provides it must be evidenced in writing by a document 'signed' by or on behalf of the guarantor. In Firstpost Homes Ltd v Johnson [1995] 4 All ER 355 it was held a document could only be 'signed' by an executing party and the 'signing' must be with a pen in his own hands. Firstpost does not explicitly refer to ghost signing machines, but as the disputed document was a guarantee and an indemnity, it did not prevent the ghost signature being effective in this case. This case emphasises the importance in commercial agreements precisely what an agent can and cannot do. Mr Hutcheson was given wide authority to commit Mr Ramsay to personal liabilities where leases were seen as helpful to the business. The court distinguished between personal matters relating to the business and domestic affairs, but that did not assist Mr Ramsay on the facts of this case. Ghost signature can bind a party who does not sign it himself, so if you are not precise about the authority you give to an agent, they may come back and haunt you. Ghost signatures could cause problems for the other party to the transaction. Whilst the landlord here was successful, the outcome may have been different it the court had held Mr Hutcheson did not have authority. The ghost signature machine used to place Mr Ramsay's signature on documents used pens that gave the appearance of a pen with a fine nib. So comparing the signature to a specimen signature would have been convincing enough to suggest a pen had produced the signature. The case leaves Mr Ramsey with a personal liability and a substantial legal bill. Mr Hutcheson was dismissed from the company before it went to court, another example of a once trusted personal relationship turning sour. Whether there is a background of personal relationships or not, it is better to think ahead and set out how far you are prepared to go.

Five Effective Tips To Manage Stress By Susan Leigh

Susan Leigh

Issues with stress can be experienced by any of us at any age. Children may experience stressful peer pressure, worry about their exams, their body image, popularity. Adults often have work, family or relationship worries to contend with. Older people may stress about health, finances, their quality of life. Each age brings its own stresses and concerns.

Let's look at five effective tips to help you manage stress: l Acknowledge that at times, stress can be an effective

motivator; it helps you perform at a higher level, get more done each day, tap into unexpected resources and think outside the box. But a constant stressful state can cause issues with health, affect your quality of life and impact on your happiness and contentment. There are recognised as being over 350 physical symptoms of stress, from problems with sleeping, irritability, lack of libido, headaches through to palpitations, gut-related problems and heightened sensitivity to pain. Sometimes it can be helpful to engage professional support as an effective way to identify and manage the different kinds of stress - the 'bad' stress that can become a draining, habitual pattern and response to situations or the 'good' stress that can help us to 'up' our game whenever we need to. l Many people find that listing their worries or stresses

helps them to manage their lives better as they itemise the things that are preying on their mind. Sometimes spending thirty minutes on a Sunday can be a useful way to focus on the week ahead and clarify key tasks. You can add to the list as required, prioritise items, make notes, and cross out tasks once completed. It can be good practice to list individual worries and stresses, move them from inside your head to outside where they can be dealt with systematically and effectively, one at a time. Congratulate yourself each day at what you've accomplished and relax knowing that any outstanding items won't be forgotten, just simply carried through to the following day.

l Delegate. At home let others help even if the result is not

to your personal standards. Giving positive feedback and encouragement helps others to feel included in your team, more responsible, happy to volunteer and receptive to new skills. Some people struggle to delegate; they may feel guilt at not doing everything themselves, be concerned at the prospect of losing control, like the idea of being indispensable. Become aware if you recognise yourself behaving in this way. Why do you feel the need to manage everything yourself? Identify what this is about and commit to letting that behaviour go. At work delegating to staff encourages them to grow in confidence as they become more adept in their tasks. Your trust in them may even encourage them to offer suggestions or come up with new ideas that ultimately improve the business. You may find that you're able to let go of the more mundane tasks, are able to focus on taking your business to the next level or can enjoy a little free time for yourself. l Managing stress includes improving your personal

relationships and allowing them to become an important part of your support network. Take time to establish regular open and honest communications. Share conversations about your thoughts, feelings, experiences rather than simply exchanging impersonal instructions and factual updates. Why not prepare your evening meal and as it cooks enjoy going for an early evening walk or play a game together as a family. By doing this you provide a regular space to de-stress, improve your relationships and have relaxing time together where you chat and maybe even engage in a little exercise. l Have quality personal time. It can be all too easy to put

ourselves last on our list, but committing to regular time for yourself to go to the gym, spend in your garden or enjoy an important hobby or interest makes all the difference to your stress levels, your mindset and your quality of life. Treating yourself well is important; taking time to eat healthily, sleep properly, exercise and wind down in an evening all help you to look after yourself well and manage stress. Professional help, like hypnotherapy can help you to feel more confident about saying what you need in a respectful, effective way. Adopting a positive approach often improves the dynamics of all your relationships. Having time for yourself, whether to spend alone or with others, is important in demonstrating that you and your personal interests are important. Personal time is another valid and effective way to help you manage stress. Susan Leigh, www.lifestyletherapy.net

Iceni Interviews Zaiphan 'Z-Man'Morris Professional Boxer

Credit: All photography is by Jerry Daws of StillFocused.

When and where did you start boxing? I first set foot in a boxing gym when I was 8 years old in Manchester but I had a little bit of an unsettled upbringing shall we say, ha. I moved around the country quite alot as a kid and trained on & off at many gyms. In cities from Manchester, Leicester, to Edinburgh. But I couldn't commit due to moving so much to so many different places. I think the longest stint I had off training was 6 months. It was more something to do that I enjoyed rather than trying to become a boxer as such. What or who inspired you to box? My Grandad boxed where he's from in Jamaica, so my dad, in turn loved the sport. I didn't have a lot of contact with my dad, but when I did see him one of the main things we would bond over would be talking about and watching boxing. You recently turned professional, what made you make this move? I have been settled in Norwich for a long time now, its my home and have really been able to knuckle down and focus on training at The Kickstop Gym in Norwich. I improved so much under the great coaching staff at the gym, rubbed shoulders and PAGE 16 trained with some of the best professionals in the

country and because of this I was finally good enough to be able to realise a life long dream of becoming a professional boxer. I am very much still a novice though and still learning and improving every day. But I love every second of it! Where did the nick name ‘Z Man’ come from? It's easier to say than my full name Zaiphan, easier to be shouted at and told to buck my ideas up when I'm in training too, lol! You have a bout coming up soon, where and when is it? Yea, it's in Norwich at St Andrews Hall on February 13th, Tickets are available now direct from me 07901 652002 priced at £35, trust me it's unbelievable value for money! Biggest professional boxing show in the city for over a decade. It's an absolute MONSTER of a show, so I'm really excited and privileged to be on the show. Mervyn Turner of Shamrock Promotions is the man and team behind the show and he always has great, professional boxing shows in Norwich. I made my winning debut on his last show in Norwich. Kickstops unbeaten Nathan Dale, is fighting for the WBO Junior World Title. Kickstops unbeaten Billy Bird is fighting for the Masters Title plus many more fights. With many more fighters from Kickstop. All at such a prestigious venue, the atmosphere is going to be electric, I can't wait!

ICENI INTERVIEWS Issue 22 2015

What has been your most memorable moment in your boxing career so far?

'Z-Man' on the pads with Jon Thaxton one his coaches from The Kickstop. A Norwich & boxing legend.

Tell us a little about your opponent. I don't know a great deal about him to be honest, apart from he's a fellow professional, he would have trained as hard as possible and will be coming to beat me, but I'm not about to let that happen. I've trained harder, I want it more, and am part of the best gym in the country. Coaching staff and management of Graham Everett, Jon Thaxton, Glen Saffer. I've also sparred with tall, short, quick, strong, precise, genuine top level, varied opponents in the gym, it's been going really well. I'm very happy with how it's going and feel I'll be ready for anything that's thrown at me in the ring. So if my opponent was to beat me he'd 100% deserve to. But I'm hopefully looking for a big performance on such a big show! What other interests do you have? I like football I'm an avid Manchester United fan but we won't talk about that because we 're not winning alot at the moment ha. I also love spending time with my fiancee Danielle and our amazing kids Tilly who's 4 and Louis who's 3 months old. They're the best thing in the world and honestly make every day worth it, I'd be lost with out them.

Getting my professional License and winning my debut fight with a very good performance in front of the best support a man could ask for. To have my debut in my home city in front of so many friends was unbelievable, the noise they made I will never forget. Very proud moment I'm glad I could share that with so many of them. So grateful. Also being patted on the back by the Coaching Staff who I respect and look up to so much, meant alot to me. Who are your sponsors and how do they help you? I'm very fortunate to have great sponsors . The Surrey Tavern Alter Ego Hair & Beauty Fallen Angels Gentleman's Club Bobby Dazzlers Cleaning Ltd Ultimate Fight Outlet D.S Watson They help in lots of different ways whether it be with the training kit I need, financial help to get new kit, to go on training camps or my yearly medicals, advertising my fights, or the most important help I need which is supporting me and turning up and getting behind me on fight night, loud & proud!. I can't thank them all enough for all they've done and do for me. Is there anything you would like to add? Yes. 2014 has been the best year of my life and am looking to absolutely better it in 2015. Being part of the Kickstop Gym, as long as I keep listening, learning, pushing and performing, I can achieve something in the sport I really believe that. I've got the best support there is and I need and hope they keep coming and I can build more support, because with out them I'd be nothing as a fighter and that is 100% the truth! #LetsBeSpecial And finally ‘good luck’ for your forthcoming bout from the team at Iceni Magazine! Thanks so much really appreciate that. Onwards Upwards Always! Real nice to talk to you. Take care & hopefully speak again sometime soon. Ps. I hope you're coming to check the show out too.

A few nights ago I was running down the stairs because I'd forgotten I'd left food in the oven and I could smell burning. It was late; I’d gotten caught up writing, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, I didn't have my bra on (it's okay, the blinds were Above: Keri Beevis drawn, so no neighbours were traumatized) and I was running down the stairs pretty fast when suddenly my boobs clapped together. Yes, they proper smacked into each other. It was like a freaking thunderclap. Of course this was ridiculous. If my boobs had gotten so big that they could beat each other up, maybe it was time to stop feeding them and go on a diet. You know how it works. New year, new me. Except I’ve never been very good at the whole embrace the weight loss thing. I have no willpower and I love my food far too much. But fear not, I have created my own diet plan. 1/ If there is no calorie information on the packet, then you can eat as much of it as you like. 2/ Chocolate (cocoa beans), wine (grapes) and vegetable pizza (vegetables, duh!) count towards your 5 a day. It is very important that you consume lots of these. 3/ Scales are evil. You should judge your weight by how your clothes fit... and if they are tight then just undo your zip or something. 4/ Exercise is dangerous. People get hit by golf & hockey balls all the time, cycling should be classed as an extreme sport (hello, cars?) and as for swimming; have you not seen Jaws?? Yes, exercise is best avoided at all costs. 5/ Depeche Mode said ‘Everything counts in large amounts’. Now it is a known fact they were talking about pizza, red wine, cheese and chocolate. Listen to Depeche Mode, as they clearly know what they are talking about. 6/ Those traffic light systems on food packets in the supermarkets are just plain wrong. They tell us we should eat all the green stuff, right? Well what happened to mixing it up a little? Look at the Incredible Hulk; he is a perfect example of why too much green is bad for you. The Diary of a Norfolk Family. Above: Mark King

By Mark King

The children went back to school after the Christmas break on the 5th of January and although it was a hectic, but enjoyable, holiday I was glad to get back to some normality. I sat down enjoying the peace and quite with a hot mug of tea answering questions to my latest interview for my new book Daniel Jones Doom on my laptop when the wife set down some old letters next to me. She had decided it was time to go through them and recycle some. Most were letters from various groups and the school with dates and information on them. One she did keep had all the school holiday terms for 2015 and when she left the room to answer the phone I took a quick peek at it. I looked and then took a double take at the dates. The next holiday term was only six weeks away! Six weeks, that’s it! As a parent the school holidays seem to come around too quickly, but as a child I remembered it seemed the other way around and took ages to arrive. We had one week’s grace before all the groups the children attend started and King’s taxi service would have to resume which felt like a small luxury, but one we knew wouldn’t last for long. As they grow older more things spike their interest and the more things they like to try. This only means more groups they potentially want to attend and so the more time us parents have to sacrifice to fulfil these new desires. On the one hand it’s great for any child’s development, but on the other it can be hard work, not just with your time, but also financially, but it’s something well worth making the sacrifice for.

Issue 22 2015

ICENI INTERVIEWS Helen Smith Artist Of The 'Friends Of Iceni' GoGoDragon How did you get involved with the GoGoDragons? I heard about it through Wild in Art, who emailed me details, as I had been involved in one of their other art trails, ‘Stand Tall’, in 2013, which involved me painting a giant giraffe to celebrate 50 years of Colchester Zoo. What made you submit and inspired your design of Carters King? I enjoyed doing the giraffe so much, that I thought I would try the dragons, as it sounded fun. I was hunting around for ideas when I discovered that Howard Carter, who discovered Tut’s tomb, grew up in Norfolk, so it was a nice link. I’ve always loved history and archaeology, and the patterns used in ancient art and treasures. How did you feel when you were told your Design had been chosen? I was thrilled to hear my design had been chosen, and then there was a double surprise when I got asked to do two dragons. How long do you anticipate the painting of Carters King to take you? I think it will take about two weeks, certainly no more than three. We understand the colours you are using were chosen due to a connection to Tutankhamen’s treasure, can you elaborate on this? There are three main colours - dark blue like the jewel lapis lazuli, turquoise and an orangey red which

represents the stone carnelian, all these stones are featured in the treasures found in the tomb. They are all offset by gold, of course. Do you have any other interests? When I am not busy on my artwork, or being mum to my two teenage sons, I enjoy sewing and stitching, I’m at my happiest when I’m making things. I also love animals and being outdoors, walking and cycling. What do you do as a job? Art is my job…I have been a freelance illustrator for over 20 years, (with a few years off when I had small children) When I left college I worked mainly on children’s educational books, but in recent years I have done a lot of work on greetings cards, and licensing the designs on to other products such as tea towels and embroidery kits. HOWARD CARTER Issue 22 2015

WONDERFUL THINGS “At first I could see nothing, the hot air escaping from the chamber causing the candle flame to flicker, but presently, as my eyes grew accustomed to the light, details of the room within emerged slowly from the mist, strange animals, statues, and gold - everywhere the glint of gold. For the moment - an eternity it must have seemed to the others standing by - I was struck dumb with amazement, and when Lord Carnarvon, unable to stand the suspense any longer, inquired anxiously, 'Can you see anything?' it was all I could do to get out the words, 'Yes, wonderful things.'” he words of Howard Carter as he gazed upon the ancient tomb of Tutankhamen, the discovery of the famous boy Kings burial site in 1922 becoming, almost instantaneously, the stuff of which legends and myths are made of-with a little bit of Indiana Jones sprinkled in for good measure. Maybe Hollywood even had Carter in mind when they cast Harrison Ford as Jones in the immensely popular films? They certainly served to give archaeology a sexed up image of derring do, dastardly foes and perpetual danger that a career served as an archaeologist in the real world could never do. Yet maybe the exhibition to Egypt’s Valley of the Kings that he led alongside his companion and sponsor, Lord Carnarvon, was the exception to the rule? If he is ever to be depicted as an action hero armed with trowel, map and a sense of history, then Carter’s origins were as humble as those of Tutankhamen were of bejewelled power and privilege.

to 1889, combining that with working as a portrait painter during his time in Swaffham, a place close to his heart where he retreated to as much as possible. He was good enough to exhibit some of his paintings at the Royal Academy where they drew much public acclaim, including from the eminent Victorian art critic John Ruskin. Samuel Carter has also been credited with having created the original drawings of the great sculptures of Lions that guard Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square, works that were eventually created and brought to astonishing life by Sir Edwin Landseer, the artist who Samuel Carter has most been likened to.

Make no mistake about it, the man who made one of the most important archaeological discoveries in history is and was a man of Norfolk and we should be proud to call him one of our own.

Yet, despite accompanying his Father to some of the great stately homes of Norfolk from whom he had been summoned to paint their dogs and horses, a desire to follow in his Father’s footsteps and become an artist himself never really appealed to the young Howard Carter-although it was on one of those trips that he first became aware of the topic and study that would become his own lifelong love and obsession. This came about as a visit to the great (and now, sadly lost) Didlington Hall, the home of the noted historian Lord Amherst, who was a great collector of Egyptian antiquities.

Samuel Carter was a renowned and respected artist who specialised in painting pictures of animals who worked for the Illustrated London News from 1867

From the moment his eager young eyes first fell upon Amherst’s collection, any lingering thoughts that Howard Carter might have had of joining the art set

He was born in London’s Kensington, the last of Samuel and Martha Carter’s eleven children. Yet neither he or his parents were Londoners. Samuel and Martha hailed from Swaffham, that ever pleasant market town that nestles, at ease and comfortable with itself, in the Breckland area of Norfolk.

himself disappeared forever. He was fascinated by them and, with his mind and imagination set in flames shared this with Lord Amherst who was able use his influence to get Howard a job at the British Museum. Upon starting work there, Carter soon found that the skill and aptitude for art that he had inherited from his Father was in great demand and he was soon set to work making painstakingly accurate copies of the numerous Egyptian tomb drawings that were kept at the museum. With his talent for the work and enthusiasm for the subject more than apparent, Carter was soon on a boat heading out to Egypt where he was commissioned to copy the tomb paintings at source and in-situ rather than drawings of them, this work and the opportunity it gave him to pursue his interest in ancient Egyptian archaeology coming via the Egypt Exploration Fund. By 1897, Carter had progressed to the hugely responsible position of Inspector for the Service of Antiquities whilst also working alongside the man who was his mentor, Flinders Petrie who was, at the time, the most famous archaeologist in Egypt. Three years later he was appointed as the Inspector of Monuments for Upper Egypt and Nubia-a colossal area of land that included numerous sites of great importance-as well as, of course, many yet to be discovered.

HOWARD CARTER Issue 22 2015

The knowledge that there were wonders out there, hidden from human eyes under all that sand and rock, unseen for thousands of years drive Carter to seek both funding and patronage to set about finding it which is how his famous partnership with Lord Carnarvon came about. Carter had the expertise whilst Carnarvon had the money-and they both had the passion for exploration. It was inevitable that they would indeed go onto find “wonderful things.” Carnarvon readily funded Carter’s explorations for several years but, by 1922, with the Valley of the Kings thought to be exhausted and with no more secrets to hold, Carnarvon motioned that the work there should cease, a thought that was shared by several senior archaeologists also working out there at the time. Perhaps this is when Carter showed some of that spirit and sense of adventure portrayed by Indiana Jones himself? For, despite Carnarvon’s misgivings and readiness to quit the project, Carter was so determined to keep looking that he offered to fund that excavation himself. This conviction so impressed Carnarvon that he agreed to act as his benefactor for another year. Thus, on November 1st 1922, Carter, along with 100 men in his employ began the work of clearing some rubble around where he was convinced an undiscovered (and therefore un-looted) tomb lay. His conviction was splendidly rewarded when, with Carnarvon in close attendance, he discovered the hither-to lost tomb of Tutankhamen, describing it as, “the day of days, the most wonderful I have ever lived through, and certainly the one whose like I can never hope to see again”. He hadn’t just made history. He had become part of history himself. Not bad for lad from Swaffham who might have thought he’d have ended up painting the lapdogs of the rich and privileged for a living. Edward Couzens-Lake for Iceni Magazine. OnTopHeadwear ARTICLE BY: CHARLOTTE SHARMAN At Attleborough Academy Norfolk, in Year 10, our business lessons have been slightly different than usual - for no longer are we watching presentations, taking notes and reading from textbooks‌ Instead, we are going to be gaining valuable experience of the real business world, and this is our story: Until June of 2015, we will be developing and running a business of our own. We have been able to do this by participating in a competition, run by the charity Young Enterprise. Young Enterprise aims to encourage young people to gain experience of trading and operating in real business situations. They do this by running a competition for young people to partake in, which involves creating and managing a business with peers and friends. The enterprise that we have agreed to start and run is called OnTopHeadwear, and as a company, we are committed to providing our customers with quality headwear that they’ll love. As students; our aims and objectives are simple; to gain experience to support the understanding of the theory we learn in classes, and develop cooperation skills that we can use in the future. Appleseed Social Enterprise After two years of planning, Appleseed Social Enterprise finally opened its doors in October 2014.

The Care Farm has been set up to support disadvantaged people of Norfolk and Suffolk by giving them access to dedicated small holdings to improve well-being and health. Groups of up to 10 adults visit the site on a weekly basis and take part in activities that include looking after chickens, growing flowers and vegetables in an allotment area and in polytunnels. The group also take part in conservation projects, habitat management and woodworking sessions.

an alternative way of working and their approach is accessible, inclusive and tailored to as many different individuals as possible, including people referred from health and social care, mental health care, police, local authorities, youth groups and education. Appleseed helps people achieve their potential, and gives people the opportunity to do so in a very practical, hands-on, simple but life-enhancing way. Greg Sadler said “Appleseed provides a cost-effective, efficient and innovative approach to wellbeing and health, and develops skills such as time keeping, personal responsibility, communication, motivation and teamwork.” The initiative received early support from Barry Duffin of the Rural Community Council, and local councillor Neil Ward who both saw the immediate benefits of the Appleseed vision and heavily supported the search for start-up funding. A successful application to the Norfolk Community Foundation Safer Norfolk Police Fund and funding from South Norfolk Councillor Michael Edney has allowed all the necessary infrastructure to be put in place, including the building of ‘The Lodge’ that provides a warm meeting area and work space.

Appleseed has been set up by Greg Sadler, a Headteacher and Steve Lerpiniere, Marketing Manager at the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation trust and their first site is located in a beautiful 17 acre spot in the Norfolk countryside. The first site has successfully opened in Wymondham, Norfolk and a second is soon to open in Eye, Suffolk serving the communities of Diss and the surrounding areas. Greg and Steve, who have both known each other for over 30 years, are keen to provide PAGE

Appleseed sessions are currently funded by the European Union Social Fund and offers free places for anyone aged over 19 in Norfolk of working age who is currently employed for less than 16 hours per week. Sessions are run by Occupational Therapist John Hirst who sets up the plan for each day and allows individuals to choose what activities they take part in - sessions are run in a very relaxed nonthreatening atmosphere, and there is always plenty of time for regular breaks with tea and cake that is provided free of charge. The first programme, led by John, has recently been completed and has been hugely successful with individuals turning up on a weekly basis readily prepared for the day ahead, and the benefits have been there for all to see. Steve Lerpiniere said “We are able to meet the needs of so many groups of people and we can offer sessions to jobseekers, people suffering from mental health problems, stress, depression and anxiety - we have supported people with learning difficulties and those suffering general

health issues. Our users have told us they feel better about themselves, and the handson sessions give them a chance to learn new skills and share experiences. What is important within our set-up is that individuals can come here and take ownership of what they do; they can bring ideas and build upon those. The next group will build upon those ideas and Appleseed will grow.

ICENI - FITNESS Issue 22 2015

Don’t Be A One Workout Wonder?? I began working with a new client last month, and they mentioned something that I come across quite a lot that I want to talk about… My client said to me: “Earlier in the week I did half an hour of exercise: around 15 minutes on the cross trainer in the garage, and then 15 minutes upper body weights on the multi-gym I have. Then for the rest of the week I just did not fancy it.” I know quite a few people like this, they don’t exercise (for whatever reason) and then they try and do too much in one go - like they are trying to make up for lost time! Firstly this is a marathon and not a sprint! This is where you analyse your daily routine, and find a space (there is always space – trust me) in your daily diary where you can exercise. If you have not exercised for a while, you should be focusing on creating a routine that is sustainable for you. I recommend exercising in short bursts. This allows you to make exercising manageable. That’s the key - keeping it manageable. With my client, I have set him the challenge of completing a 15-minute workout 3-4 times in a week. The workout I have given him is completely bodyweight, so he shouldn’t be feeling too sore the next morning and it’s even possible to do it in front of the TV in the evening. I would rather someone did 4x 15 minute exercise sessions than a single hour of exercise and then nothing else for the rest of the week. This way their body will adapt quicker when they start to increase the amount they do each day. So don’t worry if you are starting out (or getting back into it), you need to pace yourself. There is no need to rush into committing to exercising four times a week for an hour at a time. Start off short and simple, and you’ll surprise yourself with what you will achieve.

Keep it up, Josh

MONTHLY RECIPE

Issue 22 2015

Adam Spicer is a local chef, caterer and food writer, specialising in modern British cuisine. His ethos on food is to keep it local, seasonal and simple. Cold wet with most likely snow all this and the festive period is over in addition to this we are already struggling to stick to our new years resolutions January can be slightly depressing for the foodies amongst us but January has some great produce popping up all over the place that needs to grace our plates.

Adam Spicer

January being one of the coldest months of the year does not mean eating steamed vegetables and flavourless salads it is a chance to embrace the hardy vegetables that have fought through the frost to remain alive throughout the winter such as leaks kale Swede and the array of squashes or why not treat yourself to some tasty venison which is at its best this time of year. For this recipe I want you so use those Sunday roast chicken leftovers and some of those fantastic squashes that you see around the supermarket and farm shops.

Roast chicken seasonal squash and bail risotto. 1 medium acorn squash 1small butternut squash Whatever left over chicken you have from your roast. 500 g of risotto rice arborio 2 banana Shallot 1 bunch of fresh basil 1 small glass of white wine 2 L of vegetable stock Splash of coldpressed rapeseed oil Remove the hardshell of the squashes and cut squares around 1 cm Place in the oven with a splash of oil and the basil stalks for around 20 minutes. Add the remaining oil into the pan with your finely diced shallots when the Shalott turned soft at the wine and all of the arborio rice stir until the wine is fully absorbed. Reduce the heat and add the stock a ladle at a time stirring constantly until each ladle is absorbed before adding the next the rice should become sticky after around 15 minutes But still retain a slight bite. Add the roasted squash and chicken and stir for 2 to 3 minutes until piping hot garnish with fresh basil.

Serve with a crisp white or a cold cider

WOODFORDES ALE TRAIL

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 22 2015

It’s All ‘App’ening With Woodforde’s Ale Trail Ale Trail goes digital to increase footfall to pubs Hundreds of real ale establishments across East Anglia and London take part in the Ale Trail and many expect to see a boost in visitor numbers thanks to the activity. It is hoped that the App will attract new audiences and make visiting and talking about great real ale pubs even easier. The Fur and Feather Inn in Woodbastwick is one of the pubs taking part. Tim Ridley, manager of the Fur and Feather Inn says: “The Ale Trail is brilliant for pubs and ale aficionados alike! We’ve always found that the Ale Trail increases footfall but we hope that the App will attract new or younger customers, eager to continue their journey into the world of real ale!” An Ale Trail designed to encourage people to support pubs in East Anglia will return this summer with, for the first time in its history, an App to make navigating pubs even easier. The Woodforde’s Ale Trail, which has become a mainstay in beer lovers’ calendars for over a decade, is returning from 21st June to 30th September 2015, with the aim to highlight the region’s array of real ale pubs. This year participants can choose to follow the Ale Trail via the App or, as in previous years, by using a printed guidebook available from participating outlets. The benefit of the App, however, is that participants can explore the built-in map to locate participating pubs nearby, as well as collect Trail stickers virtually using innovative QR code-scanning functionality. This has been specifically developed to operate with or without a data connection, in order to cater for areas of the region where mobile data is limited. Rachael Shakespeare, marketing Woodforde’s, comments:

manager

The Ale Trail is co-ordinated and run by Norfolk real ale brewery Woodforde’s which has been producing cask conditioned and bottled beers for 34 years. Based in Woodbastwick, the brewery prides itself on consistency and excellence in every pint, thanks to the use of local ingredients in its beers. Woodforde’s was named Brewery of the Year by the Good Pub Guide 2015. As before trail-goers will collect stickers for Woodforde’s pints purchased in each Trail pub visited (one per pub). The more stickers collected, the bigger and better the prizes from the Norfolk brewery; from a limited edition t-shirt to bottles and boxes of beer. For more information visit WoodfordesAleTrail.co.uk. The App is free and will be available to download from the Apple and Android App Stores from 21st June 2015.

“This region boasts some of the country’s finest real ale pubs, from historic coaching inns and city centre bars to country pubs and coastal taverns. “Exploring pubs and enjoying local real ale is one of life’s true pleasures so the Ale Trail is an excellent way for beer lovers to discover the region’s rich array of pubs and, with the help of the new App, locate them more easily.”

To See Cheryl, Mike and Jay (formally of Bucks Fizz) At the Lowestoft Marina Theatre on Sunday 12th April More than thirty years after they stormed charts across the globe with a string of hits, Cheryl, Mike and Jay are once again set to tour the world with a 70-date World Tour to remind everyone that there is more to Cheryl, Mike & Jay formerly of Bucks Fizz than Making Your Mind Up. The band's original line-up was classic Eurovison, two boys, two girls - a formula established by ABBA, to whom Bucks Fizz were inevitably compared. Having performed together since 2009 when ‘girl next door’ Cheryl Baker and ‘cheeky pin-up boy’ Mike Nolan reunited with ‘The Raunchy One’ Jay Aston, the trio are being joined for their ‘Paradise Regained Tour’ by a fourth vocalist - coincidentally called Bobby. The fourth member of 1981's Eurovision winning line-up was Bobby G. Originally put together as the perfect winning act, Bucks Fizz went far beyond their original Eurovision remit and as one of the biggest selling bands of the 80's, became a global phenomenon. Making Your Mind Up became a number One hit across the world selling more than four million copies... The legendary skirt-ripping routine propelled them to overnight success, charting at No.1 in many countries beyond the UK with countries like Japan, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia falling to Bucks Fizz's charms. ‘Paradise Regained’ will be their most comprehensive tour since the 80's, with more than 70 dates in the UK, Ireland, Europe and beyond... including Australia, where in spite of not being part of Eurovision territory, Bucks Fizz had a massive following. It will be the first time the band have performed there since 1986. CAP VOLUNTEERING Issue 22 2015

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

CAP Volunteering Communication Statement The Carers Agency Partnership (CAP) is a partnership of eight local charities, which provide services to support unpaid carers. We aim to reduce the social isolation carers can experience due to their role, as well as ensuring there is access to peer support, and we rely on the valued skills of volunteers in order to do this. There are a number of volunteering opportunities within CAP that can help support carers in your local community, such as supporting carers groups, community ambassadors, fundraising, admin work and befriending. ‘I have been involved with West Norfolk Befriending as a volunteer for about 10 years. My clients have all been a joy to visit and are so appreciative of the time given to them. Many of them are very lonely due to their isolation and do not see anyone all week except for carers/ cared for. They all have wonderful tales to tell and with a little encouragement they soon begin reminiscing about childhood antics, school days, and their working life. We always manage to have a laugh even if the client has been a little “down” when I first arrive. Those who are able, love going out for coffee and cake and we encourage as many as possible to attend our social functions (which always involves a meal!). It is a pleasure to hear the “buzz” of conversation when they all get together.’ Volunteer Befriender at West Norfolk Befriending. Our volunteers come from varied backgrounds, and therefore bring a wide range of skills and experiences to their roles. We believe in creating partnerships, where volunteers benefit and develop through their work, as much as we do from the valuable time that is contributed. PAGE

34

We take a person centered approach to volunteering and will work with you to identify where your skills can be most useful and where the experience will be most rewarding for you. In return for your time, we offer a chance for you to make a real impact in carers’ lives, as well as improve your skills and confidence. We also offer training and support in your role and out of pocket travel expenses. New Opportunity To Join Award Winning Choir For Festival Commission Open call for singers to taster for new Norfolk & Norwich Festival project dip in for selected projects. I really cannot stress enough that absolutely everyone of whatever ability or experience is very welcome, no-one is judged in any way and we especially welcome first timers’ said co-director Sian Croose.

The Voice Project Choir, twice EDP People’s Choice winners at the Norfolk Arts Awards, are inviting anyone who would like to try singing to a no obligation taster session. The Norwich based choir, who have performed at many international music festivals are recruiting new members for their new commission to be performed at this year’s Norfolk & Norwich Festival in May. The details of the project are still under wraps but past Voice Project performances have been held at site specific locations such as Holkham Hall, Norwich City Hall, the Norfolk Broads and others – and another exciting venue is anticipated for this year’s, as yet untitled, performance. The Voice Project Choir always has new music and words specifically written for its performances by internationally renowned composers, poets and lyricists and this will be no exception. Recent incarnations of the choir have seen membership grow to almost 150 voices. The choir is totally open access, there are no auditions and first timers are positively welcomed. The age range runs from 18 to 80 and the choir is created from beginners, experienced performers, and everyone in between. ‘Most people are far more musical than they think, and singing regularly in a group can really lift your spirits. Many join time and time again, extolling the relaxing and therapeutic values of singing in such uplifting surroundings, while others prefer to

One recent recruit added ‘I had never sung in a choir before, and was quite nervous about airing my voice in public for the first time ... but Sian and Jon created such an incredibly supportive, fun, engaging, and non-judgmental atmosphere during weekly practice that any fears I had about being a novice faded rapidly away. The setting and choreography for the performance itself added to the excitement and reward of being part of the Voice Project. More please!' There is a no commitment ‘taster’ evening on Tuesday 17th February at 7.30pm at The Friends Meeting House, Upper Goat Lane. Prospective singers can just turn up on the night or get further information and reserve a place at www.voiceproject.co.uk. After the taster rehearsals will take place each Tuesday up to the concerts in May. Previous works by The Voice Project Choir have gone on to be performed at The Queen Elizabeth Hall London, Sage Gateshead, and at Normandy’s ‘Jazz Sous Les Pommiers’ Festival. The choir has been featured on BBC 1, BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 3 and primetime TV in France.

Your Facebook page could be the first exposure that a prospective customer sees of your business so, like any social media platform, making a good first impression counts. It's easy to just 'dump' a generic photo into your Facebook header and think that'll do - but taking a bit of time to decide what your end goal is with the page and the role the imagery can play to inform any visitor that views it, is essential. A few technical points to consider when creating your header image - at the time of writing this article Facebook headers consist of a Cover Image (851 x 315 pixels) and a Profile Image (180 x 180 pixels). If you upload a differently proportioned images, Facebook will ask that you crop it - potentially losing part of your message contained in your image. Facebook also re-samples your images' resolution making it sometimes appear 'fuzzy' so it's an idea to play around with the image resolution (dpi) in your preferred image manipulation program, until you get the best result. Now it's not all plain sailing with the image content either - Facebook has more rules you should adhere to:

1. Copyright

3. No hard sell tactics

You're not allowed to mention a price, a promotion or a special offer either on your cover image.

4. No contact information

Email, phone number, address etc are also banned - these must be listed in the About section of your Facebook business page. Now that's not to say that I haven't seen businesses disregard these - because I have, to widely varying degrees. Personally I would recommend that you don't and that you keep within the guidelines they've set. Ok, you're thinking that's a lot of restrictions. Well yes it is but what it makes you do is think creatively about what you could portray here. Here's a few ideas to get you thinking about your Facebook header cover image:

Promote your products or service

Create a montage of your products/service but make sure it's unique to you and follows your brand colours and design. If you could just put the image you've created on someone else's Facebook page, and it works for them, then it's probably not right. See picture below.

Make sure the images you use are yours to legally use - don't plagiarise someone else's work and pass it off as your own.

2. Call to actions (CTAs)

Theses are not allowed in any format on your cover image (i.e. please click, like, share, buy, download etc). In fact even adding a graphic device like an an arrow pointing towards the 'like' button is not allowed. PAGE

SOCIAL MEDIA Issue 22 2015

Promote the lifestyle of your brand or product

If your products aim is to improve the users quality of life - whether it’s a feeling of belonging from being part of the brand’s community or whether it simplifies their life in some way, portray this in your cover image.

Promote your latest release

If visitors are likely to visit your Facebook page on a regular basis you could consider changing the content of your cover image weekly, monthly or seasonally to keep things engaging. For example if you're a magazine you could update your Facebook cover image (and any other social media platform imagery) to display the latest cover photo every time a new issue hits the shelves or if you’re in the film industry promote your latest movie release.

Show off your creative skills

If you're in a creative industry you could consider combining the profile image and cover image to show your skill set (ie. Photographer, illustrator, designer etc) and if your solution is creative, it'll be memorable. Some people have used the relationship between the two images in very interesting and creative ways. Giuseppe Draicchio's Facebook page is often used as a prime example of the creative possibilities. See picture below.

These are just a few ideas to get you thinking creatively about your Facebook header imagery and realising the importance of brand consistency across all your online platforms. Above all have fun with your Facebook header. Be creative, be memorable and be brand consistent.

Volvo V70 D4 SE Lux (2014 onwards) By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Follow Tim on Twitter: @carwriteups or visit www.carwriteups.co.uk I MIGHT buy one of these; I’m serious. Very rarely do I get seduced enough by a test vehicle to keep it for realworld use - but this one ticked all the right boxes. You see, I’m probably a typical family guy, so even though I love cars, it’s not practical for me to empty my wallet and buy a sports coupé. Where would my kids sit? Consequently I’m forced to look at middle of the road motoring. That’s where Volvo works for me. It’s heading towards premium - some would argue the Swedish brand is already there, and we all know they’re built like brick outhouses.

They’re also more stylish than they used to be, and ultra comfy. Even better, the V70 has flip-up booster seats in the rear. This is like discovering a diamond in the rough when you have an eight and a five year old. I hate swapping child seats about, and these fold-away boosters work a treat. It’s good to know I could buy a V70 and have everything I need for the family without having to purchase a peoplecarrier. I hate them. Well, maybe ‘hate’ is too strong a word – I just don’t want to own one – because that really would be admitting middle age. The V70 isn’t just practical, it’s good to drive – especially with an automatic gearbox. It’s smooth and you can press on well. It’s also a quiet car and one with a load area to make the managers at IKEA smile. Yes, it’ll fit in all those boxes that are too long for a ‘normal’ sized boot - and that means there’s no excuse when your wife asks you to go and collect all the bits to bolt together later.

So, I’m tempted to say that this could be the ultimate family car. It certainly offered my brood first-class comfort, combined with an impressive 575 litres of load space. As well as the integrated child seats, the rear seatbacks can be folded down in three 40/20/40 segments, giving more options to configure extra room. What’s particularly reassuring about the V70’s drive is its IntelliSafe technology – the automaker’s blanket name for all-active safety systems. One of the best gadgets is Pedestrian Detection, which watches out for people walking into the car's path and automatically puts on the anchors if there’s an impending impact. Road Sign Information supports you too by displaying road signs on the instrument panel. Maybe now you might see why I’m tempted to own this Volvo? When you have kids, protecting them comes top of the list. Top speed; 0-62mph; C02 emissions and, to some extent MPG, go further down the list. That said, the V70, on test here, is not an inefficient motor to run. It’ll do over 68.9mpg and it emits just 111 CO² (g/km).

Issue 22 2015

Mind you, I’d still have to go for a used one. Costing £34,720 new, my Bank Manager would throw me out if I asked for a loan - and there’s no way I’m going down any car finance route - the mortgage is enough of a chain around my neck. Now, where’s my nearest pre-owned Volvo dealership?...

Whitechapel's Sherlock Holmes The Casebook of Fred Wensley OBE, KPM Victorian Crime Buster

Dick Kirby

By any measure the story of Fred Wensley, a Somerset gardener who joined the Metropolitan Police 1888 and retired forty-one years later of Chief Constable of the CID, is an extraordinary one. After an abortive attempt to catch 'Jack the Ripper' by nailing strips of bicycle tyres to the soles of his boots, Wensley got stuck into arresting the ne'er-do-wells of Whitechapel, where he would spend twenty-five years of his service.

His hugely successful career was not without controversy - did he frame Stinie Morrison, convicted of murder, as was claimed? whatever the truth, Wensley was awarded the first King's Police Medal, appointed OBE and commended on many occasions.

Written by a popular crime writer with a Met background, Whitechapel's Sherlock Holmes not only paints a fascinating portrait of the legend dubbed 'The Greatest Detective of all Time' but contains thrilling stories of gang busting, murder and insurrection. RRP £25.00 • Hardback • 254 Pages • ISBN: 9781783831791

Review “This story of Fred Wensley’s 41 year career in the Metropolitan Police force makes interesting reading. The life of a policeman in London a century ago was certainly a very harsh and dangerous one. The story is predominantly told by going through his casebook of numerous diverse and colourful cases, ranging from modest thefts to more infamous events such as the Sidney Street Siege.

The book paints a fascinating picture of a man dubbed “The Greatest Detective of all Time”. Whether that is true is a matter of opinion, but he certainly made a significant contribution to the development of the Metropolitan Police force in the first half of the 20th century, with his most significant achievement being the creation of the Flying Squad.” PAGE

ICENI - HOROSCOPES Issue 22 2015

Horoscopes For February Aries 21 March - 20 April

Libra 24 September - 23 October

Dreams can play a part in helping you make decisions, and may have guidance that not only resolves problems but helps unlock creative possibilities. Mars and Venus in your sign can enhance your charisma, making you an attractive option, boosted further by the New Moon of the 18th which could see a significant breakthrough around long term goals.

It will help to break your goals into steps and set yourself deadlines in order to accomplish them. However, once Mercury kicks into gear from February 11th, you’ll find it easier to get ahead and meet your commitments. Romance looks more promising after the 19th and your social situation could be noticeable for its dynamism and fun.

Taurus 21 April - 21 May

Scorpio 24 October - 22 November

Though Valentine’s Day is here, the whole month looks good romance wise for dating or bringing extra sparkle to your current relationship. Meanwhile, Mercury forges ahead on February 11th, giving you the green light for those key plans. Later, you may want to keep news under wraps until you’re really ready to share.

Whether you prefer romance to be slow and tender or fiery and passionate, you could get the best of both worlds this month, as the planetary energies can bring sparkling opportunities your way. However, your attention may shift to wellness and lifestyle matters later, with a firm desire to get cracking and make one or two healthy changes.

Gemini 22 May - 21 June

Sagittarius 23 November - 21 December

The Full Moon midmonth can be excellent for a chance to promote your goods and services to all the right people, or even for a fun celebration. Meanwhile, delays become a thing of the past as Mercury pushes forward from the 11th of February. Your social life is also looking very positive Gemini and can help a Valentine’s romance to blossom.

Home and family life may well absorb your attention this month. However, these influences might incline you to focus on gentle activities that can inspire - such as the arts, crafts or even DIY. However, once the sparky Mars moves into Aries on the 20th, you’ll be looking to more challenging pleasures such as sport or the chance to prove yourself in other ways.

Cancer 22 June - 23 July

Capricorn 22 December - 20 January

Learning new skills or getting a qualification may be useful, even if further down the line. Then again, travel can call encouraging a jaunt to another country. Meanwhile, the New Moon could be useful for setting a budget or applying for funding. Renewed motivation might also emerge in the latter part of this month helping you to prove your worth.

This month’s blend of influences brings folk together, encouraging you to reach out and connect. Plus, as Mercury turns direct in your money zone, you might experience fewer delays with financial tangles quickly melting away. Concerning a family matter, you could find yourself willing to give it 100% to resolve things once and for all.

Leo 24 July - 23 August

Aquarius 21 January - 19 February

The Full Moon in your sign on February 3rd makes for an early, yet potentially delightful start to this month’s St Valentine’s celebrations. However, you’ll find that romantic opportunities are a particular feature of the weeks ahead, allowing for many tender and intimate moments. Later, the pace amps up, and far horizons could tempt you and prompt a bold move.

Are you ready to make a few sacrifices to get personal plans and projects off the ground? If so, things should get easier once Mercury steps forward in your sign from February 11th. Financial matters may keep you busy though, with a focus on wise budgeting. Mind, your ideas zone comes to life which could help enhance opportunities to develop along exciting new lines.

Virgo 24 August - 23 September

Pisces 20 February - 20 March

Your love life can rock this month, bringing a chance to take a relationship to a new and more satisfying level. And with Valentine’s Day on the 14th, chances are you’ll be keen to add plenty of sizzle to a budding romance. However, a Mars Venus connection could encourage a spending spree - even if you don’t have the cash to spare.

You can revel in the romantic opportunities that are open to you, whatever your current relationship status. In fact, the Valentine’s celebration might be only one of many sizzling days you'll enjoy. Meanwhile, plan ahead and work on your goals daily to showcase your creative abilities. However, try not to be too frivolous around spending.
