Thought Of The Month By Alex Wiseman Christmas Trees I know people often talk about other people putting up their trees early, but I've always been one to want them up in November. When I was little I always had to wait until December which seemed a long time! The excitement of watching my parents try to untangle the lights was too good to miss. Although this year I said in mid-November I can't believe that someone has put their tree up, to then be reminded that I in fact had the tree up at the same time last year. Merry Christmas all. Look forward to continuing my moaning next year...A x

WHITE SAGE Issue 32 2015

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

White Sage Holistic Therapies For the past 12 years I (Louise Francomb) have worked within the NHS as a Senior Cardiac Physiologist. Having worked in this environment for many years I have seen first-hand how the effects of work related stress and busy lives can impact health. After going to a massage therapist myself and feeling the amazing results not only for my painful back but my stress levels I soon realised that complementary therapies have their place in our lives as well as conventional western medicine. I was hooked‌ I first trained in Reiki, completing my 1st and 2nd degree certificates. I then went on to train as an ITEC level 3 massage therapist and qualify in pregnancy massage and deep tissue massage. I also offer Hopi ear candling and crystal healing, gaining my diplomas at the Jackie Hamilton School of Therapies and from the Complementary Health Care Clinic in Norwich. For many people there seems no release from the daily grind of working long hours whilst trying to maintain healthy relationships with family and friends. Many of us have stress in our lives but it is how we deal with this stress, and of course the level of stress that is crucial to its impact on our physical health. So much importance is placed on a balanced diet, regular exercise and how a ‘healthy mind equals a healthy body’ but sometimes despite our best efforts we are not able to maintain this balance. My aim is to re-store balance to mind and body. Whether you want to de-stress, revitalise your energy levels or soothe sore muscles my aim is to get you back on track! I am fully insured, first aid trained and a member of the Complementary Therapists Association. For more information visit: www.whitesageholistic.com

FOSTERS SOLICITORS Issue 32 2015

Fosters Solicitors Can You Sue Your Relatives?

Many of you will no doubt have seen the recent story from Connecticut, USA about the aunt suing her nephew after he gave her a hug. It was painted in all sections of the media (at least in the UK) as an example of the 'compensation culture' that is supposedly widespread in the US and is rapidly taking hold in the UK. The truth, as in so many cases, is far more complicated than it looks at first glance. While the aunt, Susan Connell is indeed suing 8 year old Sean, this is not a case of an 8 year old having to forgo pocket money for the rest of his life to pay the potential damages in the region of $127,000, but rather it would be his parents home insurance policy that would ultimately have to pay any damages - assuming that the case is won. So, could this happen in the UK? Well the short answer is yes although it would have to be something more than a hug ie a reasonable injury in order to justify bringing a claim. To take a more usual example it is quite normal for a child who has been injured in a road traffic accident due to say the fault of his father, to then sue his father with his mother acting for him as his "litigation friend ". As with the case in America it would be the father’s insurance company that would pay any damages. If you or one of you family have suffered injury whether through the fault of a family member or a member of the public you may have a claim. Plan For An Easier Time Over Christmas by Susan Leigh

Many of us get swept along by our desire to create the perfect Christmas for our family, but even the Archbishop of Canterbury has expressed concern at the amount of pressure, and especially financial burden, that some people subject themselves to at this time of the year. There are those who over commit themselves financially to such an extent that it's estimated it could take them up to three years to pay it all back. Let's look at ways to plan and make for a happier, less stressful Christmas:  Where to spend the Christmas festivities is often a major contributor to family stress and tension, especially when there are in-laws, ex-partners and step families to consider. Some families compromise and agree to alternate visits and custody arrangements over the Christmas and New Year period. Others decide to avoid conflict altogether by having their festive meal on a 'token' different day. Be firm from the outset and arrange what's best for you and yours so that it makes for a happier Christmas all round.  Gift shopping can be fraught with difficulties; what to buy and for whom as well as how much to spend can cause real dilemmas. Try some of the local markets that sell unique, attractive items with no discernible price tag. Interesting, locally sourced food and drink, jars of preserves, handmade pictures and crafts all make for relatively inexpensive yet thoughtful presents. PAGE

Twitter: @icenimagazine

 Have you a particular skill that would make the perfect Christmas gift? Genuine offers of help in the garden, baby-sitting vouchers, a delicious homemade cake or an original picture or photograph you've framed are often much appreciated.  Discuss present giving with your children, especially the older ones. Let them know that you're cutting back and that they'll receive one main present this year. Agree amongst the adults in your circle that you're only giving gifts to children or commit to a price limit or a Secret Santa approach to present giving.  What about spending time together as an alternative to buying gifts? Children often appreciate the wonderful memories of times when you went bird watching, spent an afternoon painting, playing games, scrapbooking or sharing a picnic together. Time and attention can be the most treasured gifts of all.  Share catering over the Christmas period by asking your guests to bring a contribution of food and perhaps even provide their 'famous' signature dish. Many people routinely bring a bottle, so extend the request and include everyone in the food provision, thus sharing the cost and effort.

 Don't forget to schedule some 'me' time so that you can enjoy an interlude for a pleasant bath and some relaxation. Ensure that you're able to socialise and enjoy your guests' company. Remember to record your favourite programmes so that you can watch them at your leisure.

 Plan the routine family meals ahead. Draw up a timetable and prepare as much food as possible in advance. This avoids the hassle of expensive panic buying and means that you're able to batch cook several simple, tasty winter casseroles. People enjoy these as a welcome alternative to rich, heavy Christmas fare.  Investigate free events like carol services, concerts and gallery openings. You may need to book some seats in advance. Plan a brisk country walk for one day, an outside ball game for another. Get out your board games and cards and enjoy the opportunity for conversation, fun and friendly rivalry. Twitter: @icenimagazine

 Don't be afraid to delegate some tasks so that family members feel proud that they've contributed to the day's success. Accept offers of help with the simpler tasks like vegetable preparation, setting the table and washing up. And remember, the things that go wrong are often the very things that people remember with affection for many years to come. They're the special memories that make for the perfect Christmas Day and become part of your family folklore. Susan Leigh, Altrincham Hypnotherapist,

ICENI TALKS...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 32 2015

Iceni talks social media to... Jason Borthwick, Development Partner at Dalegate Market.

There are quite a few networking hours on Twitter, which is your favourite and why? I like #NorfolkHour as I manage to chat with quite a few people. I still haven't found the best app to use to follow this, normally finding it better to do this online. I've also tried #WestNorfolkHour and #CraftHour for particular things, but finding the time to go on regularly proves to be more difficult than it should.

What is your favourite social media campaign you have managed? My favourite is Deepdale Christmas Market, as we have over 100 reasons to visit and its lovely seeing different reasons being reposted in different directions.

Which social media experts and/or influencers do you follow? Not many. I tend to watch what is happening,

Jason Borthwick. Photo credit: Andy Davison

What does your role within Dalegate Market as a Development Partner involve? The job is pretty varied,

but the core is about making sure people know Dalegate Market exists and getting them to visit the site. That includes giving reasons for people to stop at the site, promoting the site around the web, organising events and generally getting the site known.

Can you give us a brief run down on how you use social media to interact with potential clients and the general public? We use social media for a whole

range of uses within our business. However primarily we use it to let people know what's happening with all of our different shops and cafe, and also to keep them up to date with events and activities. Maybe a shop has a sale on, there's a live music event at the cafe, or a new stall is confirmed for the Christmas Market. We hardly ever try to sell anything through social media, we just want people to know what's happening and hopefully that leads them to want to visit and see for themselves.

How do you use social media as a tool for your existing clients? We're a destination for most of our

particularly from my colleagues in similar industries, and hopefully emulate the good stuff and try not to fall into the pits that many do. There's no definitive answers with social media, as its an art that is very much in its infancy and so lots of people have lots of different views. Also things vary massively depending on the customers following you.

What kinds of skills/qualities do you think you need to possess to be a Development Partner? You have to try to look into the future, and try and see the bigger picture. Neither are easy and you certainly can't always get it right, but you have to try. You also have to try and move all the relevant parties in the same direction.

What are your competitors doing on social media?

Kind of depends on who you class as our competitors, so many variations of what we do. Because of that, we watch a wide range of organisations. Some are great at social media, others are less so.

And finally, what one piece of advice can you give to someone starting out into the world of social media? Don't be afraid to make mistakes, but never get

customers, so most actively have to travel here or visit when they are in the area. They like to know what is going on, so they know whether to return and visit.

into arguments with customers or others on social media.

Which social media platforms do you use and and why? i.e Hootsuite, TweetDeck, etc? Hootsuite to

How To Size Your Twitter Account Images To Get The Best Results We've all been there, you've found your perfect profile or header image for your Twitter account (or other social media platform) but you upload it only to discover it's stretched in some very strange way. Arghhhh!

Open you chosen image as another separate file, then copy/paste it into your new correctly sized file. When you paste your image in it'll probably come in larger than the actual dimensions of the new file (and may be a separate layer). Be aware that if the image pastes in smaller it may not be suitable as it'll appear pixelated/blurred.

Fear not though, hopefully the following tips might just help you get professional looking results. This is my preferred way of creating images - there are lots of other ways out there that would still get you the same results. It’s best not to just upload a photo and keep your fingers crossed you get it right. To get the best result you need to resize your images in a image editing application. There's lots of applications available for both Macs & PCs - like Photoshop CC, Photoshop Elements, Gimp (free) https://www.gimp.org/ and Pixelmator http:// www.pixelmator.com/mac/. For the purposes of this article I'm going to use Photoshop - the terminology and steps are fairly similar across most good image editing applications. Here's the current dimensions for Twitter images:

With this layer active select ‘Transform > Scale’ (Cmd+T on a Mac and Ctrl+T on a PC) to display the corner resizing points. Select a corner point, hold down ’Shift’ (Mac) or ‘Ctrl’ (PC) ensuring you resize proportionally, and drag the corner point diagonally down to scale the image until you get it to fit as you want.

Twitter Header Photo - 1500 x 500 pixels, 72dpi, max file size 10mb, JPG, GIF or PNG Twitter Profile Photo - 400 x 400 pixels, 72dpi, max file size 10mb, JPG, GIF or PNG

Once you're happy with the image layer, save the file as a .jpg, gif or .png depending on your final requirements. You should be able to adjust the quality of the .jpg when saving it to reduce the file size. I find this way gives me more control than resizing the image directly via ‘Image Size’ method.

It doesn't matter whether you're creating your profile or header image the procedure is essentially the same.

You should now have a correctly sized image to use on your Twitter account. Don't forget that your Twitter cover image is partially hidden by your profile icon, so it might help to add guides/rulers to your cover image to determine what'll be covered so you don’t place any critical imagery or text over that area. Remember that the placement of the profile photo over the header photo varies slightly depending on the device you’re viewing it on.

Open up a new file to your desired final pixel dimensions and most critically at the correct 72dpi resolution. If your files resolution is higher, for example 300dpi, your final image may not fit correctly or be bigger than Twitter allows as an upload. Twitter: @icenimagazine

ICENI INTERVIEWS Issue 32 2015

Iceni Interviews

Actress Holli Dempsey

How did you get into acting? Looking back, I remember going to see Pantomimes and shows as a kid, but I didn't leave the theatre like all the other kids; giggling and chatting, instead I was always really quiet and sad thinking "I want to be up there doing what they're doing". At 11 I joined a local youth theatre which solidified those dreams. I went there most weeks until I was about 17. I was by no means confident or loud so I got lost amongst the other young people. However, I knew I'd found my first love in acting. After attending a normal college and getting my A levels I decided to really go for it and try and make my gap year count! I took part in lots of shows and short films. I even wrote and filmed a mini film in my bedroom, showcasing the different characters I thought I could play. I landed a role in the very last episode of 'The Bill' - which was a dream come true. All these things caught the eye of my now-agent who has really helped get my career moving.... ICENI INTERVIEWS Issue 32 2015

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

What or who inspired you to go into the acting profession? I think it's invaluable to always teach your children that they "can be whatever you want to be" - which is something my mum has always taught me. It doesn't matter about your monetary or class status, you MUST believe in yourself beyond these social barriers. People can inspire you along the way but a belief in a dream, especially one that seems so unattainable, has to come from deep inside YOU. No one else can push that dream but you. Find out what it is you're good at and love...then do it! I think I have just always loved all kinds of people and want to portray their stories to the world. In Britain we have so many brilliant influences which no doubt inspired me. I have always loved real, true and honest performances and hoped I could emulate them one day. What was your first acting job? My first ever experience on stage was at 11 years old in my school's showing of 'Little shop of horrors'. All year 7s had been told they could only be part of the Chorus, but after hanging round rehearsals so much - soaking up the atmosphere, my teacher offered me a little part as Detective Bernstein! This was the big test. I was absolutely petrified! But as the lights hit me and the words rolled out I realised how much I loved it. Just under 10 years later I landed my first TV role in the long running British classic series of The Bill. I had always wanted The Bill on my CV so I was overjoyed to be cast in the last EVER two episodes!

What job or character do you feel gave you your ‘big break’? I had done lots of good telly and some powerful dramas, such as 'The Ice Cream Girls' that were getting me noticed but I have to say my 'Big Break' moment is getting cast as Vicky in Ricky Gervais' show 'Derek'. Vicky was originally only ever meant to be in one scene. When I got the job, and even at the audition, her part was growing and becoming more important. Ricky saw how powerful it could be to have a young person working in the Old peoples care home. He also loved my Adlibs and the authenticity I bought to her. After that she became a main character with some lovely story lines. This show has been such a hit around the world and has no doubt put the spotlight on me, but more importantly girls like Vicky. Real, hardworking, good hearted girls, who don't often have a voice. That means I've done my job as a story teller.

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

There were days filming Dad's Army that got very cold and long. Who is your favourite character you have played and why? Vicky was probably one of my favourite character to play, for a few reasons. It's always great to play someone who is quite different from yourself. I think there are similarities with me and all of my characters, but the wild ones who want to just have fun, or no filter to their words are often the most fun to play. I had spent longer with Vicky as a character too. Seeing her grow over two series' and a Special was wonderful and not something I'd had the chance to do yet. Can you tell us any amusing stories, whilst you have been on set? There were days filming Dad's Army that got very cold and long. One particular scene took two days to shoot and we all got quite cold and needed to keep morale up. I began the 'tap' game; where you tap someone on the shoulder and disappear as they turn around! It got very funny at one point as Sir Tom Courtenay kept 'getting' me. I had met my match! It continued over some days and it suddenly dawned on me one day..."I've been playing this juvenile game with SIR Tom Courtenay". I do believe this is why a lot of actors don't 'get old', at least not in their spirit. They never stop playing and that has to keep your inner child alive We hear you have landed a role in the film remake of Dads Army, what character are you playing? I am indeed part of the new Dads Army movie, ready to hit screens on February 5th. I play Private Pike's girlfriend Vera. I can tell you she is sweet, old fashioned and fiercely loyal! I am really excited to be a part of a film that is going to unite families, old and young and hopefully bring in a whole new audience that didn't give the original series a chance. It's truly classic comedy.

ICENI INTERVIEWS Issue 32 2015

Dads army was an iconic TV show, how do you feel about living up to the general public’s expectations of the film? Living up to old series. Firstly, people are completely right to be worried! 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it!' The original series was so iconic and brilliant just the way it was. The actors, the characters, the storylines were all flawless - they even had city backdrops that wobbled in the wind! - Classic! We really hope people begin to see that we are not trying to remake it, or change it, but simply Celebrate it! The director Oliver Parker did an incredible job at casting the men. Not only did he select actors that weirdly resembled their older counterparts, but each one is a true British acting legend. It's quite a special mix to have. The script sticks to the original themes and gags of the show. I am excited about reviving Dad's Army for audiences, like me, who were never enticed to watch the original series growing up. It's a brilliant celebration of a British classic. You have done a lot of TV work, how did film work differ? I definitely expected Film to be a very different experience to TV, but it wasn't really. The style of filming was similar, except it felt like they had a little bit more time to get exactly the shot they wanted. Some scenes took much longer to film than in TV as Oliver had decided how he wanted it shot. I think the conventions between TV and film must be more blurred now than ever. A lot more TV is being shot in a filmic way and taking over channels such as Netflix and changing the way people watch TV therefore changing the way we make it. What is next on the horizon for you? I am currently filming a great part for E4s new show Aliens (title may change) which has been so brilliant to work on. The character I play is brilliant fun as she is so mouthy and has some great lines! The cast are so talented, fresh and exciting. I can't wait for that to air! I appeared in a very scary episode of Jekyll and Hyde for ITV in November. It's a part like none other I've played.

Dad’s Army will hit cinemas on February 5, 2016.

Cancel That Call With The Estate Agent, Here's 10 Tips To Stop You Needing To Move House! lmost everybody wants a beautiful looking home, where everything is neat and tidy, and there is plenty of space to go around. Unfortunately, in the real world, life sometimes gets the best of us and busy lives and growing families often leave homes feeling undersized and over cluttered. In the quest for more organisation and living space, many people feel they have no option other than to move to a larger home, when actually adding some creative storage solutions and maximising the space available can be all you need to do. Check out this list of storage and design ideas to help you get the most out of your current space, and start to love where you live once again. 1. Restrict your belongings When living as a large family, or trying to survive in a tight space, the most important factor to being comfortable is to restrict the number of belongings you own. Regular purges should be done once or twice a year to eliminate any unneeded items, and only really sentimental items should be kept in addition to items that are regularly used or needed. 2. Maximise cupboard space Cupboard space is valuable in a home, especially a small one, so maximising the space available is PAGE

essential. Consider adding a second hanging bar to your fitted bedroom wardrobes*, to obtain double hanging space. Also, incorporate functional pieces like shoe racks and storage cubes into your rooms to keep things tidy and easily accessible. 3. Choose multifunctional furniture pieces Furniture that does double duty is a must have when trying to maximise space, and there are many creative solutions on the market today. A pull out couch provides space for guests, and there are many children's beds that feature loft beds with incorporated desks and even storage built into the stairs. For adults, there are many bedroom sets that have clothing storage built in under the bed and built-in wardrobes can be designed to fit in even the smallest of bedrooms. 4. Kitchen storage In smaller homes, kitchen cabinet space is often limited, but a little creativity can go a long way. Hanging pot racks can be a functional and visually attractive solution for storing necessary kitchen equipment, and floating shelves can be ideal for storing those must-have small appliances. There are also many great multi-purpose pieces such as serving cards that double as islands for food prep and wine and glass storage below.

5. Bathroom function When many people share space, or it is limited to begin with, most will find that bathroom suffers the most from clutter and lack of functionality. These issues can be addressed stylishly by incorporating space-saving storage solutions that fit in over the toilet and under the sink for linen and product storage. Choosing a good medicine cabinet can help clear up the typical clutter that accumulates on countertops. 6. Sharing a room It may be necessary for young children to share a bedroom, which can quickly become crowded if not approached properly. Bunk beds, captains beds with storage underneath and clever storage solutions such as lockers, cubbies and various bins and buckets will keep things organised and even enhance the decor in the bedroom. Consider colour coding furniture so that each child has something that is just theirs. 7. Organisational aids There are endless organisational aids available to maximise the function of just about any nook and cranny in the home. Items like drawer dividers, storage caddies, baskets, segregated bins and shelving will help keep things tidy and give everything a proper place. Choose stylish organisational aids to match your decor and reflect your personal sense of style. 8. Outdoor living Bring the indoors outside whenever possible and create functional living spaces in gardens, patios or balconies. Comfortable seating, a dining table and even space for outdoor cooking can help make the home feel more spacious, as not all of the activities done at home are within the confines of four walls.

9. Find the hidden space There are many smaller areas of a home that can be utilised for storage in creative ways. Space under the stairs can be turned into a functional storage cupboard for shoes and coats, and although floor space can be sparse, hanging cupboards and shelves on blank walls can add decorative effects, as well as giving a cluttered home valuable storage space. Integral garages can easily be converted into functional rooms too, with sheds and greenhouses providing storage space for the usual garage clutter. 10. Go white Many people consider decorating in all or mostly white to be drab, but in all actuality using white makes everything seem very clean, bright and spacious. Incorporating all of the above storage and organisation tips with white design will make the space feel clear of clutter. Infusing your personality is easy - simply use statement pieces and interesting pops of colour throughout to put your own stamp on your newly spacious rooms. If you feel you're running out of space in your home, don't immediately start contacting estate agents! Taking a good look at maximising the space you have already, and considering alternative storage solutions may be all you need to live more comfortably, without the stress of moving house. DAISY CHAIN

DAISY CHAIN, a magical animated film, interactive app and book, voiced by ™Academy Award winning actress Kate Winslet that opens up the conversation on cyberbullying. WHAT IS DAISY CHAIN?

HOW DID KATE WINSLET BECOME INVOLVED?

Daisy Chain is an animated film and interactive App narrated by Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet and written by British Australian writer Galvin Scott Davis. Daisy Chain tells the magical story of a little girl named Buttercup Bree who falls victim to nasty posts from shadowy bullies... until she discovers that her love of Daisy Chains unlocks a power that will bring light to the darkness of the playground.

Galvin had met Kate twenty years previous, as a young UK actor on the set of Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet. During a short conversation, Kate had asked Galvin what his ambition was. He told her he wanted to write and direct. Kate’s last words to him were, “My advice would be, never give up”. And twenty years on, when writing the second book in a series who’s theme is to never give up, Galvin knew This Tim Burton-like tale was written and there was only one voice in mind. Galvin took directed by award-winning creative Galvin a chance and sent the book out to Kate’s agent. Scott Davis and produced by digital agency Protein One. Galvin, originally from Erith in Kent, moved to Sydney in his twenties and has become a successful creative. The interactive app is the sequel to the Best of Appstore 2012 recipient ‘Dandelion’. Both stories intertwine to tell the story of children who are bullied yet overcome the darkness to become something bigger than ever before. Daisy Chain was financed with the assistance of Screen Australia. PAGE

WHAT IS DAISY CHAIN? Issue 32 2015

To his surprise, Kate responded to the story, herself a victim of bullying. Not only is Kate one of the world’s most respected and recognised actresses, she is also a passionate advocate against the way people are judged by how they look. Daisy Chain captures this message and captured her attention. HOW DID THE PROJECT COME TO BE? The first tale, Dandelion, was written after one of Galvin’s sons was bullied and he could not find an adequate story on the shelf to help him Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet discuss the topic with this son. The incredible Photo Credit: Frederic Auerbach response that Dandelion had globally, winning international design awards and being adopted the makers have embraced this knock-on in schools, encouraged him to write Daisy effect upfront and have partnered with the Anti-Bullying Alliance (UK) will now benefit Chain and continue the fairytale series. from Daisy Chain as the project is donating a percentage of profits to each foundation as a HOW IS THE PROJECT GIVING BACK? way of giving back. With the success of Dandelion (#1 Book App LINKS TO ASSETS AND THE in the Appstore, 2014 New York, London and ANIMATED STORY: Sydney Design Award winner etc.), Galvin noticed that there was a knock-on effect The Film: that the project was having. Though the story, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGxmschhkNg stunning illustrations and groundbreaking Website - http://www.ilovedaisychain.com.au interactions were created to offer an original Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/dandelionapp storytelling experience, the theme of bullying Instagram - https://instagram.com/dandelionbooks had not been lost on the audience. ICENI INTERVIEWS Issue 32 2015

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Iceni Interviews Owen Morgan Business Manager at The Space What is your Role within ‘The Space’? Currently I am the Business Manager at The Space which means I oversee our team that look after operations, sales and accounts. It’s an overall role that encompassing all aspects of the venue, I also get out and about as an ambassador or representative of our venue both as a business and our social aims. Tell us a bit about what ‘The Space’ is? The Space is a social enterprise conference venue. As a conference venue we provide spaces that help our guests and clients deliver excellent and effective events. We have a series of flexible spaces that can be used for a variety of events and meetings and our facilities include free parking and wifi and perhaps most importantly our above and beyond customer service. You might be wondering what it means to be a social enterprise, well for us that means two things, firstly it means we are a not for profit organisation which means every penny of our net profit is spent on charitable causes. Secondly we have social aims as well as business aims, for us that means providing young people or long term unemployed people with the opportunity to gain experience and skills in a professional environment through short or long term work experience placements, volunteering and apprenticeships. We love seeing people grow and develop in confidence through working with us and go on to full time work with us, elsewhere or even start their own business. The Space is operated by Proclaimers Church, who use the venue on Sundays, the startup costs all came from donations from the people in church and while midweek we host all manner of events, on Sundays, all the rooms are taken over by Proclaimers, for the sunday service, foyer and kids rooms. PAGE

28

What made you choose the premises you are in? It was the need that Proclaimers had to find a venue that started the process, we had outgrown all the venues for hire and so looked for a suitable large space to convert. This one became available and had great potential. We wanted something large and not too far from the city centre. How was the building before you changed it? A bit of a mess to be honest, it was very dilapidated so we had a lot of work to do to get up and running, repairs and then new walls, floors and decor throughout. How long has ‘The Space’ been open/operating? We took on the lease in 2010, then opened for conferencing for the first time in April 2011. We were a long way off the venue we have today but we picked up some clients over the next 18 months. In the last quarter of 2012 we opened with all 7 hireable spaces that we have today. So 3 years with all the rooms but it all started in April 2011 so we plan to celebrate 5 years in April 2016. What is ‘The Space’ used for? Our space is used in a huge variety of ways. Over the last year we have hosted events for local businesses, schools, charities, local and national government as well as national and even global businesses. For example we have hosted events from large global companies like Apple,

Sony and Hallmark to local charities such as Break and the Nelson’s Journey, meetings, conferences, product launches, you name it! Recently we were proud to host the Broadland Community at Heart Awards celebrating local heroes. We pride ourselves on versatility but also on being accommodating no matter what the event. Then every Sunday the venue is used by local church Proclaimers, the breakout rooms host children’s groups and the auditorium fills with hundreds of people each week. Proclaimers hold occasional events too such as the Christmas services which are growing in popularity year on year as well as events throughout the year for children and young people, including a free holiday club in the summer. Do you have any plans to extend its use in the future and if so what? We are always seeking out new clients and new opportunities as we know there is so much more that our venue can do. We are always improving, updating and generally making it better. Right now we are installing new lighting in The Auditorium with The Blue Space coming soon too. Then in the new year we will be installing a redesigned cafe area in The Atrium that we are really excited about. We will soon be launching three new spaces for hire too, The Boardroom, The Lounge and The Office. These will be available for hourly rate hires and present a flexible option for people who need less space or are looking for a different setting than a home office or shared office. Do you get involved in charity work? Absolutely! In so many ways. We are a charity ourselves, and so our conference income provides funds for our

charitable causes and several others also, our net profit all goes towards charitable causes. Love Norwich is our own community arm which does a huge variety of things, self-esteem courses for young men and women, christmas hampers for families in need, work with prisoners and ex-offenders, volunteers for community events, weekly visits to our adopted streets in Pilling Park. Right now we in the middle of our Christmas Hamper campaign, this year we are aiming to provide 250 hampers to families across Norwich. The luxury hampers contain donated food items and meat vouchers, everything you need for Christmas lunch. Last year’s recipients were incredibly grateful, we are involving more businesses, workplaces and schools this year than ever before. How many people work at ‘The Space’? We have a very small team, I am the Business Manager, Ian is Centre Manager and Jill works on Marketing and Networking on behalf of The Space. We have some part time conference staff and a lot of volunteers!

WRAPPED UP

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 32 2015

Wrapped Up I don’t know about you but I always want it to feel cold around Christmas. December is the only month I find snow acceptable, mostly because I like to layer up in warm and festive outfits. Which is why, just in time, I’ve pulled together a list of items and accessories you might want to add to your wardrobe this winter. Scarfs are the perfect way to add some colour and pattern to your outfit. Some very important for a time of year when we spend most of our time in our winter coats. I’d always advise that you go plain with your coat for this very reason; it’s much cheaper to buy a few different scarfs and allows you to play around with different looks. My recommendation is this blue checked Ted Baker scarf. These cute reindeer socks from River Island are way of bringing some subtle festive style to your look. Okay, so chances are most people won’t see these but they’ll put a smile on your face. Patterned socks are all the rage right now so why not go for a pair sure to add a Christmas twist to your look.

I personally love trapper hats (although only during actual cold weather and not worn ironically in the summer). Now there are several different styles and looks but for me, you can’t beat a simple wool style, like this one from Next. The hat has enough individuality in itself without worrying about any extras or bright colours.

We all know that besides presents and trying Starbucks red cups, December is full of parties, gatherings and work get-togethers. This glitter clutch from Topshop will add some Christmas sparkle to any party outfit this season.

NOVA SILVER

Christmas At Nova Silver Now here at Nova Silver we may be slightly biased, but we think the Norwich Lanes may be at their best during the Christmas period. The festive lights are switched on, the streets and lanes are packed with shoppers full of Christmas cheer, but we don’t seem to see any of the hassle that comes with High Street shopping in December. Maybe it’s the fact that there are plenty of opportunities for a bit of a sit down and a cup of tea (or something stronger!) when it all gets a bit too much, or the fact that you’re bound to be served by people who know their stuff and are passionate about what they’re offering. Add the fabulous buildings we’re lucky enough to have surrounding us and it’s a recipe to create a really special Christmas feeling. Here at Nova HQ we love helping to create a Christmas cheer, and we’re always pleased to have a happy customer leave knowing they’ve chosen something that will make someone smile on Christmas morning. We’ve been working really hard to make sure that there are plenty of options for everyone this year, and have been changing around lots of our displays to make room for our gorgeous new collections of silver jewellery. Our elves have been busy designing more classic silver pieces, and we’ll be adding lots and lots more to our silver men’s jewellery. Make sure to check out our brand new Nova Luxe collection of CZ set silver pieces, it’s perfect for the party season! We’ve got stocking fillers and secret Santa’s covered too, with loads of little stud earrings starting at £5, and we really hope there’s something for everyone!

The Diary of a Norfolk Family. By Mark King December is a time of year that you cannot escape the biggest festival of them all, especially if you have a young family. For a large percentage of the U.K population, the true meaning has been lost because of mass commercialisation by big business, and political correctness. Still the basics of what the birth of the baby Jesus means still manages to shine. Above: Mark King

During the cold bleak winter months, there is nothing better than putting up the Christmas tree with the sparkly decorations, and the flashing lights. This we do as a family two weeks before the 25th and then we take everything down again two weeks after Christmas Day. Plenty of cards will be posted and hopefully plenty received. When we do the large shop in the mad week before the big day, we will purchase extra tins for the local food bank. The gift of food for the needy is a present we can all afford, and it is so easy to do. When you purchase your tins of baked beans, or mixed veg, which cost a few pence, just pick up an extra one or two, and put them in your trolley. The media will be flooded this time of year by the very big charities asking for your money to add to the tens of millions they already have sitting in their bank accounts, or investment funds. It can be just as easy to drop a few pence into their collection box to clear your guilt, but I think for now they can wait for the New Year. I feel there is nothing more rewarding than taking the family, with a variety of items be they tinned food, long life milk, sugar, pasta or even a bag of sweats and visiting your local drop off point for the food bank. You can visit any church of most denominations or other faiths too, or the town hall. Let your children put the items in the drop off box, and then they will learn the joy of giving, and not just think Christmas is just a time for receiving toys. We wish you and your family all best for this festive season and the New Year ahead. www.always-hanging-around.blogspot.com Follow on twitter: @author-king

Things I have learnt since getting older. I don’t need algebra. I was told at school to pay attention in class as I wouldn’t be able to get through life without it and each day I wake up and think, ‘ooh, maybe this will be the day my algebra skills will be required’. Well, I’m still waiting and I really hope I don’t need them as I can’t bloody remember how it works. Stuff aches a lot more and I am not as flexible as I used to be. These days, if I attempt to stick my leg around the back of my head there is a real danger it will get Above: Keri Beevis stuck there. Grocery stores hiking the price on the stuff I regularly buy by just a few pennies irritates me to the point that I almost turn green and burst out of my pants. Mama Beev and I have many conversations where we are ranting about the rising price of toilet roll or peppers. Walking into a room and not remembering why I am in there is a daily occurrence. When I am talking to Lola and Ellie I get their names muddled with all of the other family cats and I end up saying, ‘come and having your dinner, Ella, Frankie, Shelby, Lily, I mean Ellie and Lola.’ Even though you promise yourself you will never say ‘when I was younger’ to a younger person, it just automatically happens. Next thing I know I’ll be telling them to take their coat off indoors or they won’t feel the benefit of it when they go outside. Only I can make myself happy. There is no point grumbling to people about your problems. There will always be someone worse off than you and if you’re not happy with things the way they are then take steps to change them. I must always remember to ‘clench’ before sneezing. It’s not just white hairs on your head you have to worry about. Those nasty little buggers get in your eyebrows too. It is never good to look downwards into a mirror. It used to be that Mama Beev would suggest a weekend trip to the garden centre and I would sneer my nose up. These days, I don’t just agree to go, most of the time I actually enjoy it. If people don’t like me the way I am that is their problem, not mine. Working with adults who weren’t even born when Dirty Dancing and Pretty Woman came out is mind blowing. Are those movies really THAT old? Am I really THAT old? Making it through the night without visiting the bathroom for a 4am pee is on a similar achievement level to climbing Mount Everest. I still love Christmas. My family may have shrunk and I now have a day job where my busiest period is the 23rd December and Christmas Eve, but I am like an excited kid when my tree goes up. As for my Christmas dinner, don’t get me started. Whatever you are doing over the festive season, I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Twitter: @icenimagazine

Top Tips To Get Your Household Running Like Clockwork. Article By Nadia Render

For the vast majority of women, running the household is pretty much a full time job in itself. Throw a couple of kids calendars, a husband and a full time job into the mix and it can get pretty overwhelming. Now there are thousands of articles out there telling you what to do to get the perfect work life balance as a full time working Mum. I’m not going to do that. I’m simply going to tell you about things that I have found from my own personal experience and professional experience have worked for me, but have also worked for friends.

The things I recommend and why:

1. Have a Wall calendar or planner, visible in a well-used communal area. Always add things as soon as you

know about them. WHY? Because this gives you a glance first thing to see what the day holds, and will make you unlikely to forget it.

2. Have a good online Calendar. (Google, outlook-there are many fantastic ones out therel). You can sync

this with the calendar on your phone and set auto reminders. This works for birthdays too and you can set multiple reminders-one reminder a week in advance and one for the day itself. WHY: We all have smart phones, and we all look at them when they flash or beep. So even if just for a second, that reminder has popped into your thoughts.

TOP TIPS TO GET... Issue 32 2015

3. Register for online grocery shopping, and set up your shopping list. Now this takes time initially, but is

great once done. WHY: You can then log in and complete your shop with a few clicks. Obviously there will be things that you want to add from week to week, but these will save in your favourites. This saves tons of time and money-stopping impulse buys and saving you the trip to the store itself.

4. Get to know your post person. WHY? When you know who is delivering your post, you can tell them where you prefer parcels when you’re not home-if they understand you don’t mind things left in the back garden, it means less tickets and less time queuing down the collection office.

5. Have a housework schedule. WHY? If you schedule small daily tasks on most days of the week, and

then a clean on one morning of the week, you feel in complete control and the one full day housework can be shelved. Allocate small jobs to the family and put a rota on the fridge. Everyone feels a sense of achievement.

6. Have a gift and stationery stash: Keep a small stash of gifts for both men and women, (I tend to pick

these up in offers and sales or if I see something that makes me think of someone I know) and a couple of birthday cards and gift wrap, with a few jiffy bags and a variety of postage stamps. WHY: Everyone forgets a birthday from time to time. The beauty of first class post is that it doesn’t take long. So even if you remember on the day and you get home late, you can select a gift from your stash, wrap it and get it popped into the local post-box on that day and say the gift is on the way. Post is sometimes late. And people are never unhappy receiving another gift a couple days after their birthday.

7. Have a weekly menu plan and prepare as much as possible in advance: Plan your meals for the whole

working week. (Something the online shop is very helpful for). This includes breakfast and lunches. If you know what you’re having daily, it means you can just go straight in and do it. After dinner, whilst dad and kids wash up, you can prepare lunch for tomorrow. Keep a backup supply of lunch items too, just in case. Also then set up breakfast. Get the tea cups set in front of the kettle with the tea/coffee and sugar in them for the morning. Fill the kettle ready for morning use. And get the cereals/toast items out and ready to access or chop the fruit and cover ready to eat. WHY? If you spend 10 minutes every evening doing this (while everyone else is in the kitchen with you after dinner anyway) your mornings will just flow, and even if you are running a bit late one morning, it doesn’t matter because everything is good to go. So there are some simple things that you can implement into daily life, that do take a bit of time setting up, but once they are in play, really can make a huge difference.

There are of course methods that can take almost the entire workload from you. You can hire or outsource, both have proven to be very successful in many households. Some hire housekeepers and nannies, but this might not be right for everyone. This is when you might outsource. I run a VA (Virtual Assistant) business and I offer a range of services remotely that take the pressure away from daily life. I offer anything from doing the weekly online grocery shop, to booking car MOT’s, renewing insurance and paying bills, arranging appointments; purchasing and sending family birthday cards and gifts, Christmas cards and shopping, (I will even gift wrap). And so on. I offer a full support service to working Mums who just haven't got the spare time for these things (or when they do, Nadia Render and her spaniel Henry! they want to be with their children.) I create a shared calendar for the Mum, where important things are listed and I can act as a physical reminder of things so that Mums have one less thing to worry about. My services start at as little as 1 hour per week. And there are many VA’s out there. I have a whole network of them across the UK. Sometimes, it is nice to be able to delegate! Issue 32 2015

2015 has been a pivotal year for apprenticeships in the UK.

Naked Element’s Perspective On Apprenticeships In Norfolk The summer of 2015 saw David Cameron announce radical plans to increase the number of quality apprenticeships across England as part of the government's ambitious pledge to create a massive 3 million apprenticeships by 2020. We’ve taken a closer look at apprenticeships and how they’re changing the face of the workforce in Norfolk.

techniques of the trade, government research shows over 90% of apprentices stay in employment after finishing their apprenticeship. Paul Grenyer, Managing Director of Naked Element comments, “Not only are apprenticeships a credible and cheaper alternative to university for young people, but they offer a fantastic opportunity for employers to teach them what is really needed in their businesses.”

What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships in Norfolk

Apprenticeships combine on-the-job training in a real world working environment with theoretical knowledge, often taught at a college or training centre. Open to school leavers as well as mature candidates, apprenticeships are an alternative to full-time education but still work towards nationally recognised qualifications, whether a BTEC Certificate, Maths, English and ICT qualification or other recognised industry specific qualifications.

Norfolk County Council created the Apprenticeships Norfolk Network to “help increase the number, level, range and quality of apprenticeships in the county, as well as generating an additional 5,000 apprenticeships across Norfolk and Suffolk by 2019.” In 2013 they announced £3.5m of public funding to help subsidise 400 apprentices’ wages for SMEs who took on an apprentice for the first time. The Apprenticeships Norfolk Network places particular emphasis on the country's growing sectors including engineering, energy, advanced manufacturing, hospitality and tourism, creative industries, health and social care, agriculture, and food and drink.

Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete, depending on the industry, type of qualification and the requirements of the employer. One of the biggest benefits for many young people is the chance to earn while you learn. The National Minimum Wage for apprentices aged 16-18 and during the first year for those over 19, rose from £2.73 per hour to £3.30 per hour on the 1st October 2015. Many see an apprenticeship as a best-of-both-worlds solution when deciding between continuing their studies, either at college or university, or entering the workplace. For many industries, hands-on and first hand experience is the only way to learn the skills and techniques necessary, for example in IT and software development. Because of the practical skills learnt throughout an apprenticeship and access to the latest methods, technologies and PAGE

Apprentices Norfolk reveal “at any one time there are thousands of apprenticeships available in a variety of industry sectors across England (and usually over 200 vacancies in Norfolk alone each month).” What’s more, based on figures for vacancies advertised across Norfolk in June 2015, many employers are paying their apprentices far more than the apprentice National Minimum Wage - even with the October increase. Based on an average of 30 hours earning £3.30 per hour, apprentices would earn £99 per week, but figures showed that weekly wages for some Norfolk based apprenticeship vacancies were as high as £308 per week.

Businesses with apprentices in Norfolk With over 200 vacancies for apprenticeships every month in Norfolk, more and more Norfolk based businesses of all shapes and sizes, are looking to apprenticeships to find committed and high calibre candidates to drive their business forward.

Issue 32 2015

Build Norfolk aims to develop the county’s construction supply chain and promotes the role apprentices will play in doing so.

Historically there has been a stereotype that apprenticeships were only the domain of builders and hairdressers. This myth has well and truly been dispelled with apprenticeships available in businesses across the board, from graphic design and nursing, to horticulture to hospitality. Plus, everyone from one-man bands to national names like Sainsbury's and BMW are offering apprenticeship schemes in a bid to shape the next generation of the country’s workforce.

What’s more, Norfolk County Council have given a membership organisation, Swarm, £50,000 to deliver a new take on apprenticeships. Swarm is a collection of businesses, with space for 80 businesses and apprentices, who have signed up to a scheme that will create groups containing 10 apprentices and 10 businesses, centred around a market town. Swarm will employ the apprentices directly in the hope that after a successful year-long apprenticeship the businesses will bring the apprentice into the business and onto their own payroll. In essence Swarm are offering small businesses in market towns the chance to try-before-you-buy and reap the rewards of having an apprentice without any of the paper pushing.

So impressed with their first apprentice back in 2009, Norwich-based KLM UK Engineering offered eight Norfolk school-leavers prestigious apprenticeships on its flagship training programme in 2013. KLM UK also played a core role in establishing the Norwich International Aviation Academy, the first of its kind in the UK, and bringing with it a further 80 engineering apprenticeships to the area every year.

Saffron Housing set up the Saffron Apprenticeship Programme in early 2013 to help 20 local business dip their toes into the apprenticeship pool. The programme’s trust will source and employ up to 20 apprentices and contract them out to local businesses. This means businesses will benefit from having an apprentice, but the HR support and training will be supplied by the programme.

Lotus, one of Norfolk’s famous exports, launched a recruitment drive in July 2015 which saw 25 apprentices join the British manufacturer’s 1000 strong taskforce.

Naked Element took on apprentice Lewis Leeds in August and are teaching him software engineering. Lewis was immediately productive and the extra pair of hands helped Naked Element secure a project with a new client.

As well as organisations and training providers who are committed to supporting the growth of apprenticeships in Norfolk, there are also groups dedicated to supporting the apprentices themselves. East of England Apprentices is “about bringing together apprentices, past, present and future, to share their experiences, advice and socialise with like minded folk who are at a similar stage in their chosen careers.” The group's quarterly meet ups give apprentices the chance to give and get advice from other apprentices and provide an important support system for the growing community of apprentices in the area.

Support for Apprenticeships in Norfolk

Building on success

Apprenticeships have become such an important part of the future of our workforce, councils up and down the country have set up networks in support of bridging the gap between employers and budding apprentices. Take Apprenticeships Broadland for example, under the guidance of Broadland District Council, Apprenticeships Broadland are a specialist training provider offering apprenticeships in everything from retail to dentistry and equestrianism to customer service.

2015 has been a pivotal year for apprenticeships in the UK. The government have pledged to create 3 million apprenticeships across England by 2020 and they’re certainly not alone in identifying the unique potential they hold, not only for the future of the workforce, but for the next generation of the country's tradesmen and women. As we’ve seen, Norfolk based businesses have embraced the benefits of apprenticeship schemes and this could go some way towards explaining how the region is now able to boast record levels of employment.

Complimenting one of their key campaigns, ‘Developing the Talent of our Young People’ Norfolk Chamber have welcomed 4 apprentices over the last 3 years and have expressed their commitment to bringing together education and the world of work.

Norfolk County Council have also demonstrated a commitment to apprenticeships in the region with Build Norfolk, a network led by the NPS Group of the council. Twitter: @icenimagazine

A CITY SYMBOL

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 32 2015

A CITY SYMBOL ome of our finest Cities are defined by their skylines, images of same that, when presented in even the most simplistic of forms, afford instant recognition by casual onlookers. London is an obvious example and one that has fashioned images of the old with those of the new. Hence St Pauls Cathedral and the Elizabeth Tower being joined in iconic status by newcomers The Shard and One Canada Square in Canary Wharf. Paris and the outline of the Eiffel Tower go hand in hand as does Sydney with its Opera House. Whilst if you have ever been fortunate enough to visit Kuala Lumpur, your breath will have been taken away by the logic defying lines of the Petronas Twin Towers. Yet such famous and instantly recognisable building outlines are not restricted to the world’s biggest and more glamorous Cities. Take Norwich and its Cathedral, the original construction of which was completed in 1145 after nearly half a centuries hard but remarkably skilled and dedicated labour. The outline of the building, highlighted by its 315 feet high spire (only Salisbury Cathedral has a spire that climbs to loftier heights, measuring at 404 feet) is one that has been adapted to represent both the City and the County itself as a symbol of its identity and strength, not least by the once familiar Norwich Union. They chose, even after their corporate rebranding exercise in 2009, to retain an image of the outline of the Cathedral as PAGE

a reminder of their long relationship with the City of Norwich. One of the ways in which this was brought to a wider audience, both at home and abroad was the depiction of the Cathedral’s spire on the front of Norwich City’s football shirts, where it stands out, tall and proud, against a blue and green background. Then there is the famous sign that welcomes all visitors to Norwich, nine in total, that pronounce Norwich to be the ‘fine City’ it unquestionably is. They stand at strategic positions near the outskirts of the City, including Newmarket Road, Aylsham Road and the Thorpe Road. Some of the signs dated back to the 1960’s and have recently been replaced but, despite the modern ages appetite for company logos and sponsor details to litter upon signage, both logo and the depiction of the Cathedral have remained, enduring symbols of a thoroughly progressive City which, for all that, refuses to let go of its cultural heritage. The Cathedrals first spire failed to see out the thirteenth century, never mind remain as one of the most familiar sights on the East Anglian skyline into the twenty first for it was burnt down during the infamous Norwich riots of 1272. Rebuilt with the same material, it’s successor was destroyed during a hurricane in 1362 with its replacement, the Cathedrals third spire succumbing to fire after being struck by lightning in 1463. Most City planners would, you might have thought, given up at this point but this was Norwich and both the people and Church were resolute: there would be

another spire. It was commissioned by Bishop James Goldwell and built using brick encased in stone, the newer building technique meaning it could be raised to even greater heights than any of its unfortunate predecessors. This structure remains, for the most part, the same one which dominates the City skyline to this day. This present spire, constructed in 1480 had its stone structure strengthened by lime mortar which was a flexible and very adaptable medieval alternative to cement with one of its chief benefits being superb elasticity; the spire can, quite literally, flex and bend in the wind. It has also been adorned with several lightning conductors meaning that, for the time being, two of the three reasons its predecessors were lost have been addressed. We can only hope there is never a need for rioting in Norwich during the modern era which might see it lost again to the fury of an angry mob. Evidence of the fire that followed the lightning strike in 1463 can still be seen on some of the stonework within the Cathedral walls which, due to the heat of the fire, have taken on a pink hue, a reminder of the heat and carnage of ages past. The Cathedral may even have been lost again; destroyed in the same cataclysmic manner in which

Issue 32 2015

the City of Coventry lost its own during Luftwaffe bombing raids, when Norwich was targeted by enemy aircraft during the Second World War. Norwich was one of several English Cities that were ‘cherry picked’ by the German High Command as those which, whilst strategically unimportant from a military point of view, were culturally and historically rich in buildings and valuable treasures. The reasoning behind the raids (which were also carried out on Exeter, Bath, Canterbury and York) was that the British public would not be able to bear to see some of their greatest buildings and Cities destroyed and would, in response, demand talks on brokering some sort of peace deal. This, of course, never happened and Norwich, like so many other locations throughout the country, took its punishment yet remained standing and defiant, as did the Cathedral which, for all its prominence and value, was damaged but not lost despite heavy bombardment. This included, on the night of April 27/28 1942, over 90 tons of bombs being dropped on the City in a raid that was responsible for 67 deaths. The Cathedral’s attractive lies approximately between Tombland and the River Wensum, from which fine views of it can be seen. The Cathedral Close is almost as interesting and historic a site as the Cathedral itself, containing a number of fine old buildings that date from the 15th right through to the 19th centuries. This includes the remains of an infirmary, dedicated to the care of the sick, elderly and dying. The Close is unusual in that it is located entirely within the defensive walls of the City, its size (85 acres in total) reflecting both the Cathedral’s importance as well as the wealth and influence of the City of Norwich throughout much of its earlier history. Such is the endearing popularity of the Cathedral and its picturesque surrounds, it is rare to find a day and time when you might be the only person wandering the grounds and enjoying the views, the history and the ‘feel’ of this great building. It is one which radiates history and spirituality in equal measure and remains the symbol of our City; strong, tall and proud, a building to be proud of with a history that is as rich and fertile as the agricultural lands which surround it.

Motoring Review

Peugeot 308 GTi

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter @carwriteups www.carwriteups.co.uk “Apart from track days, where do you get as much fun”? That’s what my mind kept reciting each time I got behind the wheel of this exciting motor. verything about the new Peugeot 308 GTi is so electrifying - right from the minuscule, sporty steering wheel to the grip the car has around corners. I really feel Peugeot is back on track with its contribution to the hot-hatch market. Way back in the 205 GTi days the French car maker had that particular market sewn up – and the 205 was, and still is, an icon in the motoring world. The 308 GTi will become a legend too; no doubt about it. It has the looks, feel and performance of a true celebrity as well as all the safety gadgetry you need for modern day motoring.

My test car looked superb cloaked in a metallic ‘Magnetic Blue’ paintjob, combined with dark leather effect and Alcantara sports seats. The 18 inch alloys appeared satisfyingly sizable against its medium sized, muscular body, and its double chrome tailpipes looked ‘the dog’s’. On starting the engine, the 1.6-litre turbo petrol lump, pinched from the RCZ-R sports coupe, has a willingness to rev, and once you engage first gear and take off, you know this car is not your usual motor. For a start, the gearshifts feel precise and jaunty, and the car is eager - it’s like a dog straining at its lead until it can find an open stretch.

" I really feel Peugeot is back on track with its contribution to the hot-hatch market ". Then, when you do find a suitable uncluttered bit of road, you can set the 308 GTi free. That’s when it sits back on its haunches for a moment before launching into a scorching attack on the asphalt. The 248bhp is certainly apparent and the 0-62 mph comes in just 6.2 seconds, climbing where legal, (German autobahns calling?) to 155mph. This 308 is certainly the embodiment of an exciting new direction for Peugeot. No surprise then that there has been an incredible and positive response to the new car, with plenty of orders so far. The 308 also obtained five stars from Euro NCAP, certifying its safety credentials.

Iceni Interviews Sheniz Natalya Coe Face Of The Globe Grand Finalist Congratulations on becoming a face of the Globe grand finalist. Can you tell us a little about Face of the Globe? Face of the globe is an all natural international beauty pageant that focuses not just on a girls looks but things like personality, smile, confidence and the biggest part being charity work. Their chosen charity is the rainbow child foundation which was founded by x factor Chico Slimani who I got to meet, chat to and dance with how cool. This charity is so good it helps children and their families all across the globe with things like providing fresh drinking water, play pumps, immunisations, education, building orphanages and terminally ill children. This is the aspect I really love of face of the globe as helping others means a lot to me, which was initial reason for entering face of the globe I never for one second expected to be a grand finalist runner up. All the Face of the Globe girls are like one big family and all support each other in the fundraising and have fun doing so last weekend four of us did a sponsored walk through London, Megan and I were from the Junior category, Elizabeth from the teen category and Cara from the Mini category but age is nothing for a Face of the Globe girl, we are all united as one. Tell us about yourself. My name is Sheniz Natalya Coe and I am 12 years old, I started high school in September and love it. My favourite activity is fundraising. My other hobbies include: ballet, tap, acrobatics, modelling and natural pageants. I also love visiting new places and meeting new people. My aim in life is to spread love, happiness and smiles. In the past 9 months I have raised £1,800 for the Rainbow Child Foundation, £100 for an orphanage in East Africa and £30 for the RSPCA and helped out with a homeless charity. PAGE

Twitter: @icenimagazine

What inspired you to raise money for charities? I have always wanted to help children less fortunate, because too often we take simple things like fresh drinking water for granted and I realised I have bigger luxuries like a mobile phone, a tablet and television and can still sometimes be grumpy, so I decided to do something where I would be more appreciative by thinking of others first. There are four things I wanted to achieve from entering Face of the Globe: 1. Raise lots of money for the rainbow child foundation 2. Spread lots of word and awareness of this amazing charity 3. Encourage and inspire other young people to do charity work 4. Make others smile by spreading love and happiness. From entering face of globe it has boosted my confidence and thus made me believe in myself and realise you can achieve anything, so have made it my mission to help as many charities as I can this year. Helping others gives me a warm happy feeling inside. I understand you have won some awards - tell us about these. In April I won the runners up place in Face of the Globe to the world finals at Disneyland next year and also won the Miss Charity award for being the highest fundraiser. In July I entered the glitz Olympics and won division supreme, second place runner up in the talent round for my dancing and was very excited to have again won the charity award for being the highest fundraiser, raising for an orphanage in East Africa. Last month (October) I won the Radio Norwich Gold award for my fundraising this was such an honour and surprise as I didn’t know I had been nominated for this. I felt so special, especially as I got to meet and dance with Alesha Dixon.

Issue 32 2015

Recently I won two dance trophies; ballet and acrobatics for being the highest achiever and I have to say once again I am thankful to Face of the Globe, because this has given me the confidence to believe in myself and achieve great things.

biggest dream to get this arranged, but I need more people on board to support my work to achieve this.

How do you choose which charities to raise money for? I love supporting the children’s charities because they are similar age to me, so I can relate better and put myself in their shoes. I had a fundraising event on Sunday 22nd November, raising money for 2 charities the Rainbow Child Foundation and CDLS, the reason I picked the CDLS was because my lovely friend Ella (who lives in Norwich) who I have been friends with since we were babies was born with CDLS, it makes me feel really sad to know how much Ella and her family suffers every time Ella is poorly in hospital, so I wanted to help children like Ella. Ella also inspires me because despite what she goes through she’s always smiling.

What do you aim to achieve in the future? When I am older I want to become a dancer or an actress. But there is also one thing I really want Chico Slimani (left) to achieve..... to become Sheniz Natalya Coe (right) an international Miss Charity and be given the opportunity to actually go to these countries and help put smiles on these children’s faces myself ... that’s my dreams.

Although I have mainly supported children’s charities I have also offered support to the Norwich Soup Movement by collecting lots of warm clothes, cooking a meal and helping on the soup run. It makes me really upset when I see homeless people, especially when it’s cold or wet. Whenever I am in the city with my mum, if we see any homeless we stop to chat and buy them some food, it’s good to spread smiles wherever you can. I have also raised money for the RSPCA as animals are cute and lovely and no animal should suffer. What fundraising events have you organised? In the past few months I have organised many events: a family fun day, a sponsored camp in my back garden (with lots of friends), charity body shop party, sold lots of clothes on eBay, did lots of car boot sales, ran ‘build a cuddly’ stall at fates, did a charity sleep over party, did raffles, guess the name of the bear and ran online competitions. In October I also completed a sponsored walk through London, it took 3 hours which I did in a ball gown and heels, this wasn’t too comfortable but I decided I needed to make it challenging to make me realise that children in less fortunate countries sometimes walk a lot further with no shoes so I wanted the walk to raise money, awareness and gratefulness in me, for which I have raised £80. In September I did a 20 mile sponsored bike and raised £120. What are you working on now? I am hoping to organise another fundraiser before Christmas. I am desperate to organise a charity talent night, that’s my Twitter: @icenimagazine

How can the general public get involved? I have a face book page if people could like it and follow me on there all my charity events get listed here: www.facebook.com/Sheniz-Coe-Face-of-the-Globegrand-finalist-my-charity-fundraising I also have a competitions page where I run online fun competitions for charity if people like that there are often prizes to be won on there: www.facebook.com/shenizfundraisingcompetitions I also have a just giving page where all donations will mean so much to this great charity: www.justgiving.com/Eloise-Coe1 People’s support by attending events, donating and sponsoring me means so much. Also I am desperately seeking a business sponsor to make my fundraising even greater it would be amazing if a local business would sponsor me, this would provide great publicity for their company as I will be sure to mention them at every opportunity and by sponsoring me that would be helping so many other children. If I could get a business to sponsor me it would help so much with achieving my dreams of helping others. Is there anything else you would like to add? I would love to take the opportunity to thank Lucie Hide for giving me the amazing opportunity to be part of Face of the Globe, it’s been an amazing journey so far and I have met the most lovely people and have made some friends for life. ICENI - COMPETITION

Issue 32 2015

Joe Brown - Major 2015/2016 Tour Joe Brown MBE hits the road again this Autumn on his first UK outing this year. It’s a major tour that takes him up to Christmas and then on into 2016 for another two months. It’s a long tour, and a tough one, but it could so easily never have happened. And not just this set of dates. Way back in 1960 Joe was on the road as lead guitarist with Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent. Joe already had solo hits with People Gotta Talk and Darktown Strutters Ball so Larry Parnes, his then manager, pulled him off the tour to do his own headline shows. A stroke of luck? Fate? Who knows. One thing’s for sure, it certainly could have saved his life. If Joe’d stuck with the original plan he’d have been in the car crash that tragically cost Eddie his - and the last five and a half decades of JB music would never have happened. Since that very first hit Joe has toured, performed and entertained like the master he is - a man with a musical skill set to be envied and totally at home with the quickfire gag and the effortless repartee that’s now part and parcel of the cheeky chappie . Although born in Lincolnshire, Joe was evacuated to London and grew up in the East End in the pub that his mum ran. He started playing professionally at 18 and soon outgrew the music hall songs of his parents, embracing skiffle in his late teens and then rock ‘n’ roll. The revelation that was Little Richard changed his life. Much has been written of Joe’s role as a UK guitar pioneer and rightly so. But, as the man modestly says, “There was nobody around in those days to tell you you were doing it wrong”. So he developed his own style which included playing guitar behind his head (a move that is said to have influenced Jimi Hendrix). His guitar playing has been lauded by many of his fellow artists including luminaries such as George Harrison, Mark Knopfler and Keith Richards, to name but a few. His receipt of a coveted Mojo Award a few years back proved one of the most popular awards of the night. Joe’s last album “The Ukulele Album” demonstrated his love of that instrument, one he’s championed for many years, but his accomplishments are spread wide. He also plays mandolin, mandola, fiddle, trumpet, banjo and, of course, electric and acoustic guitar. Accompanied by his four strong band which includes his MD son Pete, the forthcoming tour will see Joe playing old favourites, rockers and new songs with a twist. Like a ringmaster overseeing his domain Joe commands the stage and, like the true professional he is, always delivers. So what’s in store? A great musical evening, a hugely enjoyable one and probably a complete revelation. An inspiring tour de force - that’s Joe Brown for you.

A GOLDSTAR CENTURY By Ian Hall

Number 31 Squadron RAF will celebrate its centenary in 2015; a pivotal milestone for a Squadron engaged at the forefront of military activity for the past 100 years. Former Commanding Officer of the Squadron, Ian Hall, has explored the Squadron’s entire history, from formation right up to current-day activities. This lively and informative narratice is interspersed with first-hand accounts taken from interviews conducted with the men, past and present, who make up the Squadron. The first twenty-five years of the Squadron’s history were spent on India’s North-West Frontier, until the Second World War where it was occupied mainly in the Middle East and North Africa. Operational deployment in recent years has seen the Squadron deployed during the Gulf War, the Iraq War, in Kosovo, and Afghanistan. In the event of troops pulling out of Afghanistan in 2014, there has never been a better time to commit the Squadron’s history to print. A Goldstar Century is a well-researched and informative account of the Squadron’s 100 year history. It not only records the facts of the various deployments but tells the personal stories of the men behind the headlines. Each and ever facet of this long and varied history is relayed in a style that serves to provide an account that is celebratoty and objective.

Horoscopes For December Aries 21 March - 20 April

Libra 24 September - 23 October

Start as you mean to go on, and don’t feel duty bound to rush around dancing to everyone else’s tune, as you might end up resenting it. Bringing structure to areas of your life where it’s been lacking, can help you feel in control. Over the festive week, early preparations allow you make the most of the party scene Aries.

Welcome to the season of goodwill, when someone may get a ticking off from you, if they take you for granted. Indeed, doing so can set the tone for better times ahead. Meanwhile, give yourself leeway to explore those activities that boost your spirits. A key relationship stabilizes moving into the New Year.

Taurus 21 April - 21 May

Scorpio 24 October - 22 November

There’s no point in implementing a festive budget if you spend it all on your friends. Clever accounting can leave you better off financially, if you’re prepared to be canny with your cash. Plan to delegate some of the bigger chores too so you can unwind. Faces from the past or faraway may visit, adding sparkle to the holiday week.

As luscious Venus dances into your sign you’ll be ready to move in new circles and connect with like-minded people. Around midmonth though, one person may stand out from the crowd. And, though you’ll happily attend festive gettogethers with family and friends, spending time with them may be a priority for you.

Gemini 22 May - 21 June

Sagittarius 23 November - 21 December

You may need to tread a careful path between doing what you want to do and involving yourself in your family’s or partner’s plans. If you desperately need some space insist on some me-time. Make use of the December 11th New Moon to expand your social horizons, but leave yourself time to relax in the midst of the jollities.

If you’ve recently felt hemmed in by responsibilities and disappointed at a lack of progress, then it may be time for a few changes. The New Moon in your sign on December 11th is the time to take control and push forward in the direction of your dreams. In addition, a sound seasonal budget can ease financial angst.

Cancer 22 June - 23 July

Capricorn 22 December - 20 January

Sometimes disruptions can serve a useful purpose, with the chance that chaotic scenes around December 10th might move you to take control in an area where you may have been too lax. Regards the Full Moon on December 25th, being with family nourishes you, leaving you feeling buoyant leading into the New Year.

Though keen to advance your goals it helps to be choosy. Don’t overload your schedule if you want to enjoy the weeks ahead, as the focus on a more secluded part of your chart encourages you to recharge between projects. Even so, by the holiday week you’ll be more upbeat and ready to play a big part in gatherings and festivities.

Leo 24 July - 23 August

Aquarius 21 January - 19 February

While getting feedback or advice from others can be a source of support, you might suffer a setback if it proves wrong, leading to a potential falling out. Indeed, making your own decisions brings positive rewards this month. In addition, creating a sound fitness schedule could be a way to avoid the temptation to overindulge.

The call to speak your truth may be hard to resist early on, when you may want to divest yourself of a relationship in which your authenticity has long been sacrificed. The resulting feeling of freedom could brighten your mood considerably. By the holiday week you’ll be ready to unwind and give yourself a much needed rest.

Virgo 24 August - 23 September

Pisces 20 February - 20 March

It seems you’ll embrace the organizational aspect of this month avidly, working to make sure friends and family have a wonderful time. Even so, lovely Venus in passionate Scorpio can see you deeply involved with one person or activity - enjoyably so! Stepping back for a while might help you get a sense of perspective.

It’s time to lay the cards on the table Pisces, and to say if an arrangement, relationship or financial deal doesn’t suit you. You could call time on an agreement that’s been a drain on you for a while now. You’ll then have more energy to put into your goals and ambitions, and into enjoying the pleasures of the season.
