WELCOME

Welcome To Our New Publication For Wymondham!

There are many reasons why we love our town of Wymondham. From our rich history to our picturesque and quiet location, local independent shops and great transport connections, Wymondham is a terrific place to live. With this in mind, earlier in the year a group of volunteers got together to form Wymondham Town Team. The Team looks at ways of promoting our Town, making the most of activities and publicising all that is wonderful about Wymondham. Our publication - Who, What, When Wymondham - aims to bring many community groups together to provide support for each other and help provide activities and services which keep our Town vibrant and a desirable place to live and work. With so much going on, we thought it would be a good idea to have a local ‘what’s on’ guide, something which collated all the information about local group activities and services together, in an attractively packaged magazine produced in collaboration with our friends at Iceni Magazine. This is our first magazine - hopefully the first of many - and while we have a fair number of groups featured, do get in touch with us if you have something to publicise over the coming months. It is hoped our magazine will be produced every two months and cover Wymondham activities. Many people have contributed to the Magazine and I thank all of them for their voluntary energy and spirit, particularly the editorial team who have been instrumental in getting things together. Many thanks also to the number of businesses who have made our publication possible by taking advertising space. So have a browse through the Magazine, and find out about coming events in Wymondham now in November and December too. Suzanne Nuri On behalf of the Wymondham Town Team Editorial group

WYMONDHAM NEWS

Wiggins Wheels Through Wymondham THE AIR of expectancy in Wymondham grew throughout the morning on Saturday 12th September as residents, businesses and visitors eagerly awaited the Tour of Britain to race through. With a backdrop of shop windows full of cycle themed displays and colourful bunting and canopies, a sea of people lined the streets waving flags and sporting bowler hats to cheer a breakaway of three racers cycling through just before midday. A few minutes later the peloton of 100 plus cyclists followed, including Sir Bradley Wiggins, accompanied by a long convoy of the many team cars and support vehicles and police motorcyclists. The fun of the Tour continued with many staying to enjoy the music, food and cycle themed stalls on the Market Cross. Children pedalled furiously to blow up balloons, power Scalectrix and make a smoothie, whilst those with longer legs had a go cycling round a virtual velodrome hosted by Howard’s Cycles. The Strada Sports Team, August Wheel Works, sports massage and pedal powered Mr Cycle continued the cycle interest complemented by crafts, books, freshly cooked pasta, cakes and a chance to see a Zenos car. It was a wonderful atmosphere with so many people of all ages enjoying themselves into the early afternoon, made possible by a good race, a little sunshine and a lot of goodwill from the businesses throughout Wymondham Town.

Local Talking Point Wymondham and Attleborough Talking Newspaper (W A T N) will record the 900th edition of their audio news and information service for visually impaired people on 20th November 2015. Items of local news, information and a “what’s on” listing are recorded by volunteers. The service is free to the listener and reaches them by means of a USB memory stick, posted each week in a returnable postal wallet, using the special Royal Mail “Articles for the Blind” freepost concession. W A T N also produces a monthly audio magazine. At 0900 (9.00am) on 20th November volunteers will be at the Market Cross in Wymondham to publicise the service and to collect donations. For more information about the Talking Newspaper, visit their website www.watn.org.uk or telephone the W A T N secretary, Georgette Vale, on 01953 605434. REGAL EXPERIENCE

REGAL EXPERIENCE

The Regal Experience group is dedicated to keeping classic cinema alive in Wymondham. The town’’s Regal Cinema was built in 1937 and closed on the 29th June 1993. Following the closure, the main auditorium of the Regal was converted to a dance floor and bar for the Wymondham and District Ex Services Club, whilst retaining the decorative features, stage and ambience of the old cinema. The projection room remained largely undisturbed with its two Kalee 12 projectors with Vulcan Carbon Arcs. Prior to the Regal being built, the proprietor instructed his architect to design a building which would last 25 years. However, the building has stood for over 70 years and once again, although on a limited basis, allows the magic of those classic movies to grace its silver screen and provide “The Regal Experience”. Many people expressed their sadness at the demise of the old Regal. However, one film enthusiast, Mr Michael Armstrong, who had been associated with the cinema for many years, rescued many of the original fittings and re-created a scaled down version of the cinema at his home. Over the years he showed 16mm and 8mm films in his mini cinema. At the same time, a small group of film enthusiasts who regularly attended film shows there, explored the idea of putting on a classic film show at the old Regal to bring back memories of cinema in Wymondham. This enthusiastic group called themselves “The Regal Experience”. With the aid of Cinema City in Norwich, it was decided to screen the classic Ealing comedy “The Titfield Thunderbolt” on the 23rd July 2000 to tie in with their exhibition of “100 Years of Cinema”. The event was well attended and many patrons expressed their wish for more classic film shows. Firstly, with the aid of Cinema City from 2000 to 2008 and now since 2008 with the aid of the Hollywood Cinema in Norwich, the Regal Experience Group has held many special one day screenings of famous old classical films, with guest visits from many well-known stars.

FOSTERS SOLICITORS

Fosters Solicitors

With the launch of “Who What When Wymondham”, a magazine with the community at its heart, Fosters Solicitors are delighted to be asked to be the “go to” experts for the Legal Q&A feature. As a firm Fosters are very much involved in the life and activities of Wymondham being fully committed to supporting local events and community based sponsorships throughout the year, during many of which we are pleased to welcome visitors to our offices in Middleton Street.

People often hold property in this way if they co-habit or own property with a family member or friend. Married couples and those in civil partnerships also sometimes hold their property in this way particularly those who have been married before.

We have Lawyers who specialise in commercial law, business law, property transactions, personal injury, clinical negligence, wills and probate, family law, crime and defence and mediation.

You can own the property in equal shares i.e. 50:50 or you can enter into a Declaration of Trust if you wish to hold the property in unequal shares eg 60:40, 75:25 or any other percentage you wish. This may apply if you contributed different amounts to the purchase price or only one person will be paying the mortgage or outgoings.

If you have any query of a legal nature please write to “Who What Where Wymondham” and mark your letter or email ‘Legal Matters’. As an example we recently received a question via our website on the difference between Joint Tenants and Tenants in Common The Question was - Can you please explain the difference between the two ways of owning property, the different implications of doing so and what happens to your half if you die first? Joint Tenants If you own your property with another person as a “joint tenant” you are each regarded as having an undivided share in the whole property. This means that your share in the property will automatically pass to the surviving owner on the death of the first of you rather than passing in accordance with that person’s Will. If you do not want this to happen you must change the way in which you co-own the property to Tenants in Common. Tenants in Common Property may also be owned jointly with another person as “tenants in common”.

If you own property as “tenants in common” then your share will not automatically pass to the survivor on the death of the first but instead it will pass in accordance with your Will or if you do not have a Will under the law of intestacy. It is therefore very important that you have an up to date Will which is written in accordance with your wishes. You may like to make provision for your co-owner to continue to live in the property for a period of time after your death whilst also ensuring that your share ultimately passes to other chosen beneficiaries. This is possible with a well drafted Will.

If you would like to make a will or amend or update your existing Will please call into our office at 1 Middleton Street, ring Laura, Maya or Lisa on 01953 607724 or email them on wymondham@fosters-solicitors.co.uk

FLOWER FESTIVAL

FLOWER FESTIVAL WYMONDHAM ABBEY

May 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th 2016 marks the dates of the most spectacular of Flower Festivals. Wymondham Abbey is honoured to host the Flower Festival which is under the strict direction of Mrs Doris Waymark who is past president and chairman of the East of England NAFAS. Mrs Waymark also has to her credit the flower festival at Norwich Cathedral to celebrate their 900 year celebrations. The theme for this amazing flower festival is ‘Rejoice’ which is rather appropriate as the Abbey is rejoicing in the fact that the development project which was recently completed has made a superb addition to this magnificent building. There will be over a hundred flower arrangements and thousands of blooms to create an amazing treat for all the senses. There will be special activities for the children, so put the date in your diary NOW and come along and Rejoice at the most amazing flower displays and have a good look at the £2.85 million extension to Wymondham Abbey.

Reflection From The Wymondham Church Network

Edith Cavell

“How amazing,” I thought as I looked at the statue of Edith Cavell just off Trafalgar Square, “that the daughter of a Norfolk country vicar ended up with such a memorial amongst an array of statues to some very important people – all of them men.” She was an ordinary person, but with an extraordinary dedication to what became her life’s work: transforming the nursing profession in Belgium. Cavell had resolved early in life that she wanted to help people and to make a difference to their lives and this she certainly did in Brussels. Unfortunately, the reason she is immortalized in Trafalgar Square is because she was executed for treason in October 1915. Her commitment to everybody, equally, meant not ignoring allied soldiers in danger once she was caught up the messiness of the First World War. She told her nurses to treat the injured German soldiers like anyone else but she worked behind the scenes to help British and allied soldiers escape to neutral Holland. When they were caught, the Germans put 27 people on trial: five were sentenced to death but only two were actually shot by firing squad: Philippe Baucq (a young architect) and Edith Cavell who met her death with integrity and faith. Her last letter to her nurses affirmed her happiness and told them not to worry about her. She shared communion with the English Chaplain the night before and the German Chaplain, who was present at the execution, recorded: “She was brave and bright to the last. She professed her Christian faith and that she was glad to die for her country. She died like a heroine.” This is why I am commemorating the centenary of Edith’s execution on October 12th. Her story is a powerful one and, for me, it is particularly so because of her being a woman in the early twentieth century; of her being a British person caught up in occupied Belgium, and because of her strong Christian faith that makes her not just a heroine, but a martyr. Rev Jacqui Horton Minister of Wymondham Methodist Church 16

Bringing The Community Together: Celebrating Wymondham’s Lemon Day

Participants in Lemon Day 2014 (Photo credit: Anna Meek) THIS year’s popular Wymondham Lemon Day event is to be held on Saturday 7th November between 10am - 1pm at Town Green Centre. There will be food demonstrations and tastings, arts and crafts displays and sales, drama and music presentations, competitions, games, refreshments and even a raffle. This free charity event in aid of the Wymondham Youth Bus, will prove to be fun for all the family and will be the 5th year Wymondham celebrates Lemon Day. The first ever Lemon Day in 2011 was held to bring all sections of the Town together under a common theme. Lemon was chosen because as a colour it is a vibrant and uplifting symbol of spring and the antidote to winter gloom. As a fruit it represents the zest of life and acts as a medicinal comfort for coughs and colds. UPCOMING EVENTS

Find out about Christmas traditions at The Library

AS well as the traditional Christmas Fayre planned for Saturday 5th December, there will be a special all-day event on at Wymondham Library. This interesting event explores how our “Christmas” traditions have slowly evolved from at least as far back as ancient Egypt. For example, what is Frankincense and Myrrh? How much influence have the Jewish and Roman mid-winter festivals had, and why did Oliver Cromwell ban Christmas? Can you eat a mince pie in front of a Puritan who is ranting at you, telling you that you are committing a mortal sin? And does the Qu’ran have anything to say? Slow Theatre are planning to continue with the ever popular Dickensian theme, and there will be surprises - all done in the best possible taste, with a nod and a wink to “Horrible Histories”! Come and join in the fun, free event from 10am - 4pm at Wymondham Library in Back Lane. Mince pies donated by Morrison’s! DECEMBER

Return of the Wymondham Tree Festival this Christmas

From Saturday 5th December 2015 until Friday 1st January 2016, residents and visitors to Wymondham can again enjoy the annual Christmas Tree Festival, which proved a resounding success last year. The opening will take place on Saturday 5th December at 1.30pm with live music all afternoon from Victoria Louise and others. The Festival is then open when the Abbey is open throughout the Christmas period from 10am- 3pm during the week. Community groups from all over Wymondham will come together to create something extraordinary, showing their interpretation of Christmas. There is a prize for the tree that the general public vote is the one they like best. There will be memory trees, trees from pre-school groups, from primary schools, community support groups, youth groups, all participating in the aid of charity. This year the Festival is hoping to raise money for the charities E.A.C.H - to help towards the nook appeal to build another hospice in Norfolk - and Wymondham Abbey to help maintain the running of the facilities. Last year the Festival managed to raise an amazing £1,328.88 and organisers are aiming to smash that this year with a target of £2,000. But they need your help to achieve that goal. Contributions will be gratefully received either through purchasing a programme or as donations when visiting. Suzie Heylings - who is organising the Festival for the second year running said “We hope that you will all come to see the trees and nominate the tree you like best. Please come to see the trees and support everyone who has taken the time to create a display for your pleasure. We all look forward to seeing you in the Abbey in December. So get into the Christmas spirit and make sure you don’t miss it!” DECEMBER

Blogging For Businesses If your business has a website then you should be making the very most of your online presence by offering your customers a weekly blog. Why? Because it is the best way of connecting with today’s market. It is therefore crucial that your business is well represented online. What is a blog? • A blog is a frequently updated online feature that gives you the opportunity to promote your business in a series of informative articles of 500-750 words. These are aimed at giving you and your business the chance to share your thoughts, expertise and passions. In short, anything that you think will appeal to your existing customers or attract new ones. Why should you have one? • It’s all about communicating with your customers. Publishing a regular blog about your business and what it has to offer should be a vital component of any online marketing strategy. Indeed, if you don’t have a blog on your website, you can be certain that your online presence and the leads and potential it creates for new customers will dwindle. How can I help? • Simple. I will write a weekly blog for you to put on your website. It will focus on promoting your business and professional expertise with the intention of attracting a growing audience of potential customers attracted by your regular updates about what you do, how you do it and why you are amongst the very best at what you do. • I can also start up and manage a Twitter account for you. The Ingredients For A 'Perfect' Tweet? Everybody wants tweets that drive conversation and ultimately sales but what one person would class as a perfect tweet another might not. Different techniques work for different people but the following tips might just help you craft tweets that get shared more, favourited more, engaged with more and most importantly drive even more traffic to your website. Here's my top 6 tips to creating a 'perfect' tweet: 1. Be specific: Keep your main message informative and to the point. It should be punchy and leave no doubt with the viewer what your tweet is about. If it's a more conversational than promotional tweet ask something that requires a reply or offer a helpful piece of advice or industry insight. 2. Keep it less than 140 characters: This allows followers to retweet adding in their own hashtag or modify the tweet to make it more relevant to their followers. Keeping a tweet to around 120 characters should allow this. Twitter recently added the 'Quote Tweet' option which allows you to add a comment to the original 'packaged' tweet - much the same way you can do when you share someone else's post on Facebook. It'll be interesting to see what impact this has on the way people retweet and share content. 3. Add a link: If relevant, add a link to the main article or product/service page on your website giving them instant access to the details. Use a url shortener to allow you to track clicks - it also reduces the number of characters you use. 4. Add a photo: It's generally agreed that Tweets with images are approximately 94% more likely to get retweeted but you must ensure that if you add an image you make sure it’s relevant and eye-catching. If you've got photo manipulation software you could consider adding branding or 'text' to your image to aid your character count message and retweet potential. 5. Reference a trend or company: If you're promoting a product, service or event see if they've got a hashtag or username that you can leverage to try to get a retweet from or join in conversations surrounding the hashtag - it's great for your business exposure. 6. Add a Twitter card: By ensuring the web page on your site you link to has an active 'Twitter Card' and using that url (long or shortened versions) it will include additional promotional content (text and optional image) to your tweets that don't form part of your normal 140 characters limit. It's important to note that if you have a Twitter Card set up for one of your web pages that this will override any image you may already have placed in your tweet. Summary: There you have it - the potential ingredients for a 'perfect' tweet. With a limit of 140 characters you have to become more focused in what you want to say and be a bit inventive in the ways to achieve this using a combination of the above. Don't forget whether you're promoting your own content or sharing others content you should always balance this with conversational tweets. Remember the principles of Twitter - listen, engage and share but most importantly 'be more social'. SHARE THE MAGIC

Share The Magic Of Christmas

With An NSPCC Letter From Santa

Christmas is a time filled with family traditions - anything from putting carrots out for Rudolph to leaving ‘snowy footprints’ around the house - to preserve children’s belief in Santa Claus. However, even the most creative parents can be caught out! To help share the magic of Christmas with children here in the UK and around the world, the NSPCC has once again teamed up with Santa to send personalised letters all the way from Lapland in return for a suggested donation of £5. And this year, Santa has been hard at work, finding new ways to make each letter even more special.

A brand new, colourful illustration style and characters and stories tailored to specific age groups are complemented by more personalisation in the letters, further enhancing the magic of receiving a letter from the man himself. Parents can choose whether the letter is signed by Santa or Father Christmas, and each letter now comes complete with an age appropriate game for children to play. For the first time, those requesting a Letter from Santa will be able to write a personal P.S. message, and will receive a complimentary pack including games, recipes and activities to help make the experience even more enchanting. Santa has even written a special poem to celebrate Baby’s First Christmas - a keepsake to treasure for years to come. Yasmin from Glasgow requested a Letter from Santa in 2014 and said: “My seven year old thought it was fantastic. He couldn't get over the fact that Santa knew so much about him, and kept saying ‘How does he know this? Look, he knows I sing!'" By making a donation to the NSPCC, parents will be able to share the magic of Christmas with their loved ones, whilst helping the charity keep more children safe.

Request your Letter from Santa from 1 October - 22 December at www.nspcc.org.uk/santa for a suggested donation of £5 to the NSPCC. To Advertise In This Magazine email: wymondham@icenimagazine.co.uk or call: 01603 510 856
