WELCOME

Welcome To Our Second Issue The provision of a dedicated publication for Wymondham and its satellite villages, to communicate all things happening in our busy town, was one of many ideas first discussed in the early days of the Wymondham Business Group a couple of years ago. Who would have thought that so many of those ideas would become the reality they are today, in such a short period of time. The issue all along has been that with so many calls for your attention, how do we tell everyone what the huge number of groups, clubs and associations in the area are planning? Social media is great, we have dedicated Facebook pages for both the Town Team and the Wymondham Business Group and we would love you to follow us, but not everyone is digitally savvy and there really is no substitute for a handy magazine you can keep for a couple of months with all the relevant dates listed. From very humble beginnings we now have a limited company formed to run the group, a proper constitution, volunteer directors and a dedicated events group, the Wymondham Town Team. That team have delivered this magazine to you today, and I trust you’ll be as pleased as I am that it is a genuine effort to inform residents about Wymondham events for Wymondham people. Of course, unless you tell them about your event they can’t pass it on, so please contact the editorial team by email: whowhatwhenwym@gmail.com . Tell them all about what your group is getting up to and be included in what we hope will become the place to read about events happening in our Town. Finally just a shout out for volunteers, the Town Team has lots of ambitious plans for 2016 and beyond and we would love to hear from you if you can help in any way. Whatever your skillset, your ideas are important so do follow our Facebook page, get in touch and get involved.

WYMONDHAM NEWS

Wymondham’s Very Own Ukulele Group! Wymondham Ukulele Group was formed in February 2013 by a small group of friends who had just taken up the ukulele. Our aims are to have fun, to enjoy playing the ukulele with others and to hopefully improve! We welcome ukulele players of all abilities and attract a wide range of people, helping each other along and learning from the better players. As the number of people in the group has grown, so has our repertoire. We enjoy playing all kinds of songs but particularly those you can sing along to and we try to keep things fresh by regularly introducing new songs. Although not a performance group, we are often invited to play at events and particularly enjoy playing at day centres and residential homes. For more information see our website: www.wymondhamukulegroup.com or our Facebook page www.facebook.com/groups/ wymondhamukulelegroup . We meet regularly on the first and third Tuesdays of every month upstairs at the Green Dragon Pub at 7 - 9pm. New members are always made very welcome so come and join us.

Fundraising Efforts For East Anglian Children’s Hospice WYMONDHAM Ex-Services Club have been particularly active this year raising money for the East Anglian Children’s Hospice (EACH) appeal to build a replacement for the Quidenham Hospice at the ‘NOOK’ site at Framingham Earl. Both jointly and independently, Wymondham Town’s Rotary and Lions Clubs have raised almost £20,000 in 2015 for the project, and this total is likely to rise to £25,000 by spring 2016. The newly formed Satellite Group of Wymondham Rotary led the way with a highly successful metal detecting weekend in July, raising more than £8,500. In September the Presidents of Lions and Rotary, together with their camp followers raised a further £7,000 on a charity cycle ride between the three regional Hospices and the new site at Framingham Earl. The rest of the money was raised through smaller events including Quiz nights and a 1940’s themed dance evening. Further events are planned. It’s All About the Books Emily Freeman on volunteering at Kett’s Books. MY name is Emily Freeman, a normal 14 year old teenager who found myself bored on Saturdays and after school during the week. I wanted to do something to benefit Wymondham, the town where I live. Many ideas came to mind such as joining the Wymondham Town Team and supporting more local events in our town, but that wasn’t enough. At the time I was also doing my Baden Powell award with Guides, which had a criteria of community action. Emily at the Kett’s Books stall on Carnival Day This is when volunteering at Kett’s Books came to mind. Kett’s Books is a non-profit making shop, therefore I wasn’t getting paid but that didn’t matter to me. I am learning so much that can benefit me later on in life, which means more to me than money. So after speaking to Tracy Kenny (manager of Kett’s Books) on the Wednesday I started working at the bookshop the following week.

There have been many events whilst I’ve been a part of Kett’s Books such as school sales, kid’s book group, community stalls at events such as Wymondham Carnival and the Tour of Britain coming through Wymondham. One of the newest projects I have been a part of at Kett’s Books is the window display. For the past three window displays I have put together a suitable themes such as our spy display for our author evening with Rory Clements. We also put together a cycling window for the Tour of Britain coming through Wymondham, all with the help of Tracy and Chloe Dawson another volunteer at Kett’s Books, and our Christmas window with the collaboration of Wymondham High Art Club. I have learnt a lot in the past six months at Kett’s Books and I intend to stay there and carry on with this incredible learning curve, with new experiences and fun along the way as well as reading brilliant books.

Seven-year-old Thomas Wells of Costessey enjoying his prize winning birthday treat

Birthday Competition Win For 7 Year-Old Thomas THE WINNER of a Lemon Trail competition, arranged as part of Wymondham Lemon Day, has received his prize as an additional birthday treat. Seven-year-old Thomas Wells of Costessey heard that he had won the prize of “High Tea for Two” at competition sponsors Lemon Tree Café Bar in Wymondham, just a few days before his seventh birthday. Thomas and his grandmother, Sue Robinson, who lives in Wymondham, took part in the competition, which involved following a trail of specially designed “Lemoji” characters, displayed in shop and café windows. Mrs Robinson said: “Thomas was thrilled to hear that he had won the competition a few days before his seventh birthday but he was even more delighted that he had beaten his Nana to the prize” During the course of the celebratory afternoon tea with his Nana, Thomas was presented with a No. 7 Lemoji, by the competition organisers, as a souvenir of his win. Lemon Day is an annual event in Wymondham, which aims to bring the community together, by means of the common theme of lemon (colour, flavour or fruit). RSPCA

RSPCA - Protecting Animals THE RSPCA Charity Shop on Church Street in the Town supports the local RSPCA Norwich & Mid Norfolk Adoption Centre by raising funds to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home animals in Norfolk. All monies raised in Norfolk stay in Norfolk and we are proud to support local animals in need. Many people do not realise that the local RSPCA branch is a small, independent from National RSPCA, self-funded charity. The RSPCA rescues starved, beaten, injured and sick animals on the basis of need, not on whether they can be easily rehomed, not because they are young or pretty. As a result our small independent local branches are full to the brim with animals needing rehabilitation and expensive veterinary care. For so many vulnerable and frightened animals the RSPCA is their only hope for rescue from their suffering. We are the only animal charity that provides an inspectorate to work to protect animals and to prosecute those whose behaviour causes suffering. We do upset people by taking cases to court but this is often the only way to prevent those individuals from being able to mistreat animals in the future. Our inspectors rescue animals that have been run over, beaten by thugs, used in illegal dog fights, trapped, poisoned, set alight, abandoned in bins and generally treated as objects rather than the pain feeling, beautiful creatures they are. The RSPCA is the only charity which prioritises the most abused and vulnerable animals, rescuing those that other charities are unable to take. We rescue more dogs than any other charity in the UK. Our network of branches, of which Norwich & Mid Norfolk are just one small independent charity, undertakes a high proportion of the RSPCA’s animal welfare work, supplying high quality care, rehab and rehoming, and provides excellent value for money for our generous donors and benefactors. As a small branch we have no funding from government and very little from HQ so our ability to continue providing care for Norfolk animals really does rely on our fundraising efforts. Just one facet of our fundraising is our seven charity shops including the Wymondham shop on Church Street managed for over 12 years by Sue Spurgeon. We stand proud for the work the RSPCA does locally and hope for the continued support of Wymondham Town residents. The shop team really enjoy participating in local town events such as the exciting Tour of Britain last September and the annual Lemon Day celebrations - these events help bring the town folk together to create ”community”. You can support the shop and its work by donating good quality clothes and bric a brac, or even by volunteering. The shop has a really friendly team of volunteers who work tirelessly to support the local Adoption Centre. The branch is always looking for help with fundraising events such as the recent BIG WALKIES at Earlham Park, and the SANTA Paws event. If you would like more information on supporting the RSPCA locally please contact Tammy Clarke, email: tammy.clarke@rspcanorwich.org To Advertise In This Magazine email: wymondham@icenimagazine.co.uk or call: 01603 510 856

Buy To Let And Second Home Purchases From 1st April 2016

STAMP DUTY CHANGES: The Chancellor announced the hike in stamp duty in the Autumn budget. Additional stamp duty land tax will be payable on buy to let homes or property that is in addition to your main residence with a value of over £40,000 from 1st April 2016. Caravans, mobile homes and house boats will not attract the higher rates and it is said that corporate property development will not be affected as part of the Government strategy to provide more housing for first time buyers. It has not been welcome news to the private rental sector. It comes as another blow on top of the Summer budget announcement on the changes to mortgage interest tax relief and the annual wear and tear allowance. Property experts expect a surge of buy to let purchases in early 2016 and envisage that landlords will look to recover any additional tax paid by increasing the rent or carrying out less maintenance reducing property standards for tenants. The consultation paper is not yet available but already, lots of questions have arisen as to how this will affect current landlords or the future plans of individuals that already own property and may want to change their circumstances in the future. A few common questions since the announcement are; “If I wanted to let out my current home and buy another for my main residence then would I need to pay the additional stamp duty?” “I have bought a second home off plan, we have exchanged but completion is due after April 2016, will I be charged the additional stamp duty?”

WYMONDHAM’S GOT TALENT KICKS OFF AGAIN FOLLOWING on from the huge success of the inaugural Wymondham’s Got Talent (WGT) competition in 2014, the 2015 event continued to grow from strength to strength. The winner, 14 year old Martha Dack was rewarded for some fantastic singer-guitarist performances of her own original songs as well as covers by Bob Dylan, First Aid Kit and more by taking home the £700 first prize, kindly donated by Fosters Solicitors. The concept and structure of WGT runs very similar to that of the similarly named national TV show, with participants with all ranges of talents, skills and abilities and of all ages able to apply. If you want to apply for Wymondham’s Got Talent 2016, Apply via an application form (these can be collected from Disney’s Deli, Puff’s Toy Shop, The Green Dragon, or found online at www.facebook.com/wymondhamcarnival from January). Audition - unlike the big TV show, these auditions are private with the participant performing to just the judges. These will be held in the Green Dragon’s upstairs room over February and March. Those successful at auditions then make ‘the live shows’. At each of these a number of acts perform with a set number then qualify for the next round and so on until the grand final. These shows have previously been held in the main hall at Wymondham High on Friday and Saturday evenings and have been open to the public, attracting good crowds at a bargain price of £2 per person. The top 6 finalists then perform on stage in the town centre at Wymondham Carnival complementing the fantastic parade, stalls, exhibits and other entertainment. The winners are announced at the end of the day and are presented with their cash prizes from Fosters Solicitors. A very simple format, a great way to bring the community together and a huge opportunity to showcase your talent. Many finalists of the past two years have gone on to secure paid performances since the competition.

So whether you are a singer, dancer or gymnast, magician, musician or comedian, or anywhere in between, show that Wymondham HAS got talent and apply for

Wymondham High Studio Theatre Cinema Screenings

FOR SEVERAL years The Studio Theatre building at Wymondham High School (accessible via the ‘south’ Norwich Road entrance) has hosted film screenings and over 2016 this is set to continue with some movies that are expected to be very popular. The purpose of the screenings is to give the people of Wymondham and surrounding areas a chance to see great films at affordable prices, locally. Over the past few years blockbusters such as Gravity, The Imitation Game, The King’s Speech and Philomena have brought expectedly large audiences. There have also been some hidden gem independent films and those that have evaded the national press publicity, such as Moonrise Kingdom, Her, Dark Horse and Pride, leading to those attending enjoying a film they would never normally have seen. The theatre itself has a large cinema screen, comfortable raked seating for 98 people, free parking, toilet facilities and refreshments and is run by volunteers who will always greet you with a smile. The 2016 programme is so far confirmed up until April. Wednesday 3rd February (7pm doors open, 7.30pm film begins) features the quirky The Lobster, a film which has just about everything you want from a film. It’s unpredictable, offbeat, laugh-out-loud funny and has an incredibly impressive subtext; managing to reflect how odd our own modern-day social pressures are. An impressive cast of Colin Farrell, Olivia Coleman and Rachel Weisz star. FEBRUARY

ARE YOU THANKFUL?

Are You Thankful? An Attitude Of Gratitude By Rev Mike Porter - Alive Church Wymondham

AS WE begin a new year, are you grateful for your life- the people and situations you experience - or is the grass always greener on the other side? How about working on an attitude of gratitude? There are benefits – it improves your heart rhythm, reduces stress, and helps you heal physically and think more clearly under pressure. It floods your body and brain with endorphins that strengthen and rejuvenate. People who say ‘thank you’ are measurably happier and less depressed. The CEO of Campbell Soup wrote over 16,000 thank-you notes to his employees, and energised the entire company in the process. The Bible is full of encouragements to be thankful - ‘Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good’ (Psalm 107v1). Jesus gave thanks for five loaves and two fishes, and proceeded to feed 5000 people. Paul exhorts us –‘No matter what happens, always be thankful’ (1Thessalonians5v18 NLT). Now that is an attitude of gratitude. We all have the choice to either grumble about life, or to be thankful. To see our cup as half-full or half-empty. Can I encourage you to thank God for all that is good in your life, and for his provision of food, shelter, etc? Let’s say ‘thank you’ to everyone who serves us in any way. I guarantee you will be happier, for -‘Thankfulness is the soil in which joy thrives’

The Importance Of Being Social On Social Media How many times have you been on Twitter or another social media platform and had someone drop in, shout about their own service or product and then just disappear? It’s a bad trait sadly employed by a large number of people who don’t realise the importance of actually ‘being social’ on social media. If you think of social media as networking but without actually physically meeting someone then you wouldn’t dream of barging into a crowded room, shouting about your product and then expect people to respond favourably. Of course you wouldn’t and the principles are no different on social media.

Being Social Social media isn’t about hard sell, it’s about listening, discussing, sharing and generally building relationships through interacting with businesses and people. Always remember that all people on social media are potential customers and advocates of your product or service. Being successful on social media is about building a voice for yourself, your business and your brand - that is trusted and respected. Social media may be ‘free’ but 26

it takes time and dedication on your part to actually establish and maintain a presence and tone of voice on social media - there’s no ‘quick fix’. Over time, through discussion and sharing content you will hopefully become seen as a recognised ‘voice’ in your specialist field by fellow tweeters. Sharing snippets of helpful information, giving advice or even showing people what you’ve been doing enhances their perception of you and you begin to build trust and recognition. Be honest and sincere and you will build a rapport with your followers - they are then more likely to trust you and then even more likely to recommend you to their friends and colleagues. Social media is a great way to build a reputation for your business as it’s quick and easy to share and inform but it also gives your customers a chance to talk to you direct. Keep an eye on what other

people, across all social media are saying about your name, company, or brand and if there’s a problem, get in touch and see if you can fix it or if they’re singing your praises - share it.

Promoting yourself Earlier I said don’t shout about your product or service, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t promote what you do. Show people what you’ve been up to by including a photo directly in your tweet and ask people for feedback or tweet an interesting fact linked to what you offer. This initiates conversation in your work and can then lead to people favouriting, retweeting or even following you and is a much more acceptable way of promoting yourself than saying ‘I have this - buy it!’ and don’t forget if someone sings your praises, RT and credit them - make them feel good and important to your business they then potentially become an ‘advocate’ for you - something that money can’t buy!

Specialist twitter hours In addition to just tweeting to your followers during the day, groups of likeminded people have created a variety a ‘hours’ that enable you to chat with businesses or individuals in a form of ‘soft’ networking. There are a huge number of twitter ‘hours’ available and these are generally divided into two categories those based on a specialist service like weddings for instance, and those that are based on geographical location. Our local geographical ‘hour’ is #NorfolkHour which

New Year, New Starts, Plan for New Destinations. As Christmas fades into the distance and we all have pangs of guilt over our overindulgence, many of us have the urge to either jet off somewhere or plan some travels for later in the year. A challenge I constantly face as a Personal Travel Designer are requests for holidays at completely the wrong time of year. Majorca in November is unlikely to produce a tan. Dubai in August is far too hot. And you’ll never see the Northern Lights in Iceland in June. In this series of articles I aim to provide some ideas of where and when to go and to include some great inside tips. Melbourne is a cosmopolitan and dynamic blend of sophisticated restaurants, interesting architecture, culture, sports, entertainment and personality. No trip to Australia would be complete without visiting its cultural capital. January is a fantastic month. It is the height of summer with warm and sunny days tempered by a freshening breeze from the south in the afternoons.

I found Melbourne’s food scene to be uniquely diverse. Finding restaurants on rooftops and in basements, in iconic settings and historic buildings, and in countless funky spaces in between. Cafés and coffee shops are popping up throughout the city, ensuring nowhere is far from a caffeine fix. One of my favourites is ‘Hell of the North’ in Fitzroy, an informal bistro using local produce and fresh ingredients to produce tantalising French inspired fare. I recommend the ‘Let Us Feed You’ option. In Australia's home of sport you have so much choice, January you’ll catch the Australian Open, in March the Formula 1 Grand Prix and in November the Melbourne Cup. If you are a cricket fan, then why not take a tour of the MCG. Australians love their beaches, and why wouldn't they? St Kilda is popular and close to the city where you can kick off your shoes on safe sandy beaches, enjoy the café culture, or head to Luna Park to whizz around on rides which have been running there for ever. Bells Beach, which hosts the annual Rip Curl

‘Melbourne has everything’

Pro competition at Easter, is a must for those into surfing. Queen Victoria Market has been the heart and soul of Melbourne for over a century, it's a great place to shop, eat and explore, or just simply people-watch and soak up the atmosphere. By escaping the busy city life and heading out of town for a few days you get to experience the natural beauty and wonder of the Great Ocean Road, one of the world’s most scenic coastal drives. You’ll pass through quaint towns, gorgeous beaches, iconic surf breaks and waterfalls. Apollo Bay is gorgeous and charming, known by the locals as ‘Paradiseon-Sea’ and, if you are lucky enough to be there in April, be sure to time your visit with the

Apollo Bay Music Festival. Easily accessible from central Melbourne are the diverse wine regions of Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsular, two of my favourites. Combining a trip to the Mornington Peninsula with a visit to Cape Schank allows you to marvel at the stunning landscapes, wild beaches and scenic walking tracks. Melbourne has everything. After only a few days you’ll soon see, as I did, why it has been named the world’s best city to live in. Sarah Laverty, owner of Compass Connections has travelled the world all the name of passion for what she loves and being able to pass on her knowledge to others. www.compass-connections.co.uk
