Following on from last year’s success of the Dickensian Christmas Steampunk Fayre, its back again! Following on from last year’s success of the Dickensian Christmas Steampunk Fayre, its back again on Saturday 6th December! We are hoping you will join us again for another fun packed and eventful day. With a 1.45pm start in Back Lane, there will be a procession including a Pipe Band, horse drawn Landau carriage carrying Father Christmas and the Snow Queen followed by The Panhard et Levassor (Norfolk’s oldest working car) with the Mayor and Lion President. Throughout the day we will have the Rock Choir, dancing Penguins & Elves and the Reindeer in Fairland Street. There will be a Bubbleologist, traditional Punch & Judy, Charlie Cheesecake the Balloon man, fire eaters, Fool Hardy Steam Punk, face painting and many other things going on. The magic of the festive season will continue when Smee from the Theatre Royals Panto Peter Pan, will be switching on the lights at 4:15pm. This programme has been produced by Iceni Magazine and is sponsored by various traders of Wymondham through the advertising they have placed. They would like to thank you for your custom in 2014 and look forward to your support in the following year. The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who’ve helped, supported and contributed through sponsorship and wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

Wymondham Lions Christmas Fayre Committee

Just imagine... You are living in a world where the microchip has never been discovered. Yes we have mobile phones and computers etc - but they are machines, driven by miniaturised clockwork and steam engines. Gadgets and gizmos are part of everyday life, and Zeppelins are the preferred mode of international transport. The old Victorian values and dress codes are still followed, of course. Why change them? However it is now more fashionable to wear your corset as an outer garment. Everyone is very polite to each other. A gentleman does not open a door for a lady because she is a lady. It’s because he is a gentleman. But there is another side. Adventuring - HG Wells, Jules Verne and Conan Doyle were not writers of fiction. They were first rate journalists. Time travel is a reality –and the Lost World does exist, where those of us that can afford it can hunt real dinosaurs. Nerf guns are the preferred weapons of choice.

Welcome to the amazing world of Steampunk, where everything is possible..... 3

The event, which marks the official start of the Christmas celebrations for the Town, will take place throughout Wymondham on Saturday 6th December. As part of our continued community support, Fosters will be welcoming visitors to our office for festive food and drinks from 2pm until 6pm. The office will also be playing host to the Children’s Face-Painter, which Fosters are proud to sponsor as part of the celebrations and there will also be a fundraising stall in aid of The Lymphoma Association for lymphatic cancers manned by Fosters staff. “This will be the second year we have opened for the Steampunk since it changed from the traditional mid-week street procession. It was really well attended last year so we are hoping to see lots of familiar faces popping in to say hello and enjoy our hospitality” said Stephen Green, Solicitor and Partner from the Wymondham office of Fosters. Fosters will have Solicitors on hand during the event who will be offering free 15 minute appointments covering topics from our Wills, Trust and Probate and Residential Property teams. PETER PAN COMPETITION

An all-star cast will bring the classic story of the boy who never grew up to the Norwich Theatre Royal stage this Christmas, from December 18 to January 18, with the family pantomime Peter Pan. Heading the cast will be Kevin Kennedy as the evil Captain Hook. Kevin trod the ‘Corrie cobbles’ for 20 years from 1983 to 2003 as the kind-hearted Curly Watts and is also no stranger to the West End and touring stage which included a highly successful run in We Will Rock You playing the role of Pop. He will be joined on stage by CBeebies favourite Sid Sloane as the ship’s cook Aunt Delilah, while Cromer Pier favourite and the writer of Ha Ha Holmes, Ben Langley, will be troublesome pirate Starkey. Norwich’s panto stalwart Richard Gauntlett will take on the role of Smee as well as writing and directing the show, and Ruth Betteridge, who played Cinderella in last year’s show, is also returning as Wendy. Completing the cast will be Charlotte Baptie and Sinead Kenny, who both recently appeared on the Norwich stage in West Side Story, making up the cast as Peter Pan and Tiger Lily. The show also gives local young people the chance to shine with boys from the region selected to play John and Michael Darling after an intensive all-day audition earlier in the autumn.

We have joined forces with Norwich Theatre Royal to give away a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) to see Peter Pan on Friday 19 December at 7.30pm. To be in with a chance of winning, just answer the question below: Which role will panto favourite Richard Gauntlett be playing this year? A - Smee

B - Starkey

C - Peter Pan

Please send your answer to: competitions@icenimagazine.co.uk by 13th December 2014. Please state ‘Peter Pan’ in the subject line. Terms and Conditions Prize is 1 X 4 tickets to the performance of Peter Pan on Friday December 19 at 7.30pm. Tickets cannot be exchanged for seats for another performance or a cash alternative 15

Message From The Town Mayor For many years Wymondham’s Christmas Fayre was known as ‘The Dickensian Evening’ where everyone was encouraged to wear fancy dress from a Victorian age. Sadly over time the number of people wearing fancy dress became less and less in parallel with attendance numbers declining. The Wymondham Lions, who traditionally organised this event in the town’s social calendar, realised that a ‘re-think’ was needed. So after much thought by the Lions’ organising committee, the idea was born to relaunch the event for the first time last year in 2013 as a “Dickensian Steampunk Christmas Fayre” and instead of an evening event, it was extended into the afternoon as well. The fantastic result was more stalls, more street entertainment, bigger crowds with many dressed appropriately, making the event a wonderful carnival of colour and excitement. Go to the website Jalbum.net/a/1441920 to view all the photographs of last year’s event and just feel the excitement in colour. Many people ask - “Steampunk” - what is it? There are several answers all of which have some truth, but basically it is modern day life incorporating Victorian romance in the style of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells etc. Just imagine TV and radio sets powered by steam? And it doesn’t stop there. Just give your imagination free rein. Come and support Dickensian Steampunk Christmas Fayre 2014 Cllr Colin Foulger Mayor - Wymondham Town Council

Welcome To This Year’s Fayre I am glad to say that the Dickensian Steampunk Christmas Fayre continues and this year the committee has had some new recruits join to help expand the event. Again we see that the event is on a Saturday afternoon, giving a greater opportunity for more people to attend the family event. With several more craft stalls and new artisan food vendors the event is ‘strengthened’. There is also more entertainment this year with a full house for acts on the stage and other entertainment at various venues about the town. With sponsorship from South Norfolk Council and Wymondham Town Council, local businesses and input from the Lions and its other volunteers, to whom I am greatly thankful, the event carries on. I hope you have a fun packed day and enjoy a really exciting start to the festive season. Lion President Jim Cawte

A year’s membership to the Adoption Club costs just £12.50 and makes a fantastic gift for family and friends. As a member, your loved one will receive a certificate, updates and photographs from their new best friend and an invitation to their birthday party. Also, to celebrate Redwings 30th anniversary, for adoptions purchased before 31st December 2014, the charity is offering a year’s free access to your chosen Adoption Star’s online diary, which includes a blog, extra photos, videos and even an interactive game! Best of all, every penny goes directly towards the care of your chosen horse, pony, donkey or mule and their friends to contribute towards their happy Christmas. You can choose from 21 of Redwings’ special Adoption Stars to sponsor for your family and friends, all of whom are based at the charity’s visitor centres so can be visited free of charge. Alternatively, pretty Victoria who lives at Redwings Caldecott near Great Yarmouth is every young girl’s dream pony. “If your loved one fancies themselves quite the superstar, Elvis - the rock ‘n’ roll pony, with a quiff to rival his namesake - at Redwings Ada Cole in Essex is the perfect match. And for the donkey lovers out there, how about making two new longeared friends? Donkey duo Wiggins and Wacko are best buddies and live at our Aylsham visitor centre in North Norfolk”. Adopting a Redwings horse or donkey for Christmas provides an extra special gift and is a wonderful way to help equines in need during the festive season - and beyond.
