WELCOME According to documents found in a small village in the North of Spain, the origins of the Spanish language date back to the 10th century. Today it ranks as the second language for international communication, preceded only by English. Presently, the U.S. already accounts for a larger Spanish speaking community than Spain itself and recent studies published by Instituto Cervantes predict that by 2050 the U.S. will be the country with the highest number of Spanish speakers worldwide with an estimated number of 138 million speakers. For quite some time now, the 'hispanohablantes' have been the largest minority in the U.S. Moreover, since this past July and for the first time in history, the Spanish speaking community of California is larger than the English speaking part. All of this shows that the U.S. is clearly moving towards a functional bilingualism in vast areas of this great country. Instituto Cervantes New York offers you the possibility to become a bilingual citizen through its high quality academic program, that comes with our most ambitious array of cultural events so far, which will allow you to enjoy and to take part in the impressive and fascinating culture of all Spanish speaking countries. BIENVENIDOS La lengua española nació formalmente en torno al siglo X en un pequeño monasterio del norte de España. Hoy es ya la segunda lengua de comunicación internacional, solo por detrás del inglés. Actualmente los EEUU tienen ya más hispanohablantes que España y, según un estudio publicado recientemente por el Instituto Cervantes, los EEUU se convertirán en el país con mayor número de hispanohablantes del mundo en 2050, con 138 millones aproximadamente. Los hispanohablantes son desde hace ya tiempo la primera minoría del país. Además, desde el pasado mes de julio la comunidad hispanohablante del Estado de California ha superado a la comunidad angloparlante por primera vez en la historia. En definitiva, los EEUU avanzan claramente hacia un bilingüismo funcional en amplias áreas de este gran país. El Instituto Cervantes de Nueva York te ofrece la posibilidad de convertirte en un ciudadano bilingüe a través de un programa académico de gran calidad, que se acompaña con una de las más ambiciosas ofertas culturales que hemos realizado hasta ahora, y a través de la cual podrás disfrutar de la impresionante cultura de todos los países hispanohablantes. VENANCIO SHINKI A DREAMCATCHER PAINTING

Opening! Tuesday, September 15, 7:30-9:00 pm Sat, September 19 By Invitation only Venancio Shinki is one of the great Peruvian masters and a leading figure of the contemporary arts. Shinki, of Japanese descent and Peruvian soul, shows in his work an exceptional mastery of pictorial techniques and the strong consistency of his language. He successfully combines universes that appear to be different, like the oriental reminiscences in the careful descriptions and strokes, the power of dense chromatic ranges based on earth tones, and the free use of figurative elements that challenge all primary logic. His work is one of the most poetic productions of contemporary art in Latin America. Venancio Shinki es uno de los grandes referentes y maestros peruanos de la plástica actual. La obra de Shinki, de ancestros japoneses y alma peruana, muestra un dominio prodigioso de los recursos pictóricos y una sólida coherencia de lenguaje. Conjuga felizmente universos aparentemente divergentes, como la reminiscencia oriental en las cuidadosas descripciones y trazos, la fuerza del denso cromatismo basado en colores telúricos y el libre uso de los elementos figurativos, desafiando toda lógica primaria. Su obra es una de las producciones con mayor contenido poético de la plástica actual en Latinoamérica. Con la presencia de Venancio Shinki. THE ART OF ANCIENT CULTURES CRAFTS

Opening! Tuesday, September 22, 7:00-8:30 pm Friday, October, 1st Free admision Chile’s traditional handcrafts are an expression of the diverse cultural identities found in the Andean territory. This show brings together some of the art of extant original cultures: Aymara, Atacameño, Rapa Nui, Diaguita, Mapuche and Kawésqar. Their works express the sensations and visions of daily life, sociability, religiosity and the symbolic universe. The multiple materials, techniques and aesthetic patterns of great beauty are the testimony of a primeval connection between nature and culture, which is part of the cosmogony of the original inhabitants of Chile.

La artesanía tradicional chilena es una expresión de las variadas identidades culturales que pueblan el territorio andino. MEXICO: IMMIGRATION THROUGH THE LENS PHOTOGRAPHY Opening! Tuesday, October 6, 7:00-8:30 pm Sat, October 24 Free Admission This exhibition brings light to the human side of immigration through citizen photojournalism. The project brought together a team of 12 individuals from six nationalities to Yucatan, a non-traditional migrant-sending Mexican state with one of the fastest-growing rates of migration to the United States. The extraordinary product of their work is an unprecedented collection of environmental portraits and stories that embodies the uncertainties, achievements, failures, fear and hopes of those who stayed behind –either expecting their opportunity to cross the border, or waiting for years for their family members to return – and those who came back home and remember. Curated by UBELONG (Raul Roman and Lonnie Schlein).

El proyecto reunió a un equipo de 12 personas de seis nacionalidades en Yucatán, uno de los estados mexicanos en los que la migración a Estados Unidos ha crecido más rápidamente en la última década. El extraordinario producto de su trabajo es una colección sin precedentes de retratos e historias que encarnan las incertidumbres, logros, fracasos, miedos y esperanzas de aquellos que se quedaron atrás, aguardando su oportunidad para cruzar la frontera, o esperando durante años el retorno de sus familiares, y de aquellos que regresaron a casa y recuerdan. Thursday, December 10, 7:00-8:30 pm Sat, January 2016, 6 Free Admission Four visions of a city that demands from its dwellers an extreme level of courage; a city that trades boldness for freedom. It is, without a doubt, a city of pioneers; pioneers arriving anew in consecutive migrations, in waves that change the environment of the city while, at the same time, keep alive its familiar character. What would become of New York without its brave inhabitants? These four photographers who reveal the city to us also share in the collective desire to find a place for themselves in this urban mass. No other city in the world demands with such urgency a spirit of conquest in those who arrive. They arrived from Spain; they wanted to feel that at some point they could capture the spirit of this vast city. Photographers Fernando Sancho, Xavi Menós, Ana Nance and Sion Fullana share their vision with us, and we can also sense their own experience in what they see.

Cuatro miradas sobre una ciudad que exige un grado extremo de valentía de sus habitantes. Una ciudad que cambia arrojo por libertad. Es, sin duda, una ciudad de pioneros. Pioneros que se renuevan en migraciones sucesivas, que cambian en oleadas la naturaleza de la ciudad y, al mismo tiempo, mantienen vivo su reconocible carácter. Qué sería de Nueva York sin los valientes que la habitan. Los cuatro fotógrafos que nos la ofrecen participan también de ese deseo colectivo por hacerse un hueco en esta mole urbana. No hay ciudad del mundo que exija al llegar tan imperiosamente espíritu de conquista. Vinieron de España, quisieron sentir que en algún momento capturaban el espíritu de la ciudad inabarcable. Fernando Sancho, Xavi Menós, Ana Nance y Sion Fullana, fotógrafos que nos prestan su mirada, y en lo que ven podemos intuir también su propia experiencia.

LOW COST DIPLOMATIC POUCH INSTALLATION ART Opening! Thursday, October 29, 7:00-8:30 pm. Sat, November 14 Free Admission This, exhibition project curated by the Spanish writer and curator Nilo Casares that reinterprets the "Decentralized packages distribution network" concept (aka diplomatic pouch) and makes it deal with the Art, using standard suitcases for traveling in the cabin of a low cost flight company, surely the means of transport used by most of us, as an intervention space. This is an exhibition of modest budget and all DIY, an objetual exhibition featuring 16 artists from all five continents and in which the suitcase is the element of continuity between all art works. "Valija diplomática low cost" es un proyecto expositivo comisariado por el escritor español y comisario Nilo Casares que reinterpreta el concepto de la "Red de distribución descentralizada de paquetes" (aka valijas) y lo lleva a su encuentro con el arte, empleando como espacio de intervención una maleta tipo de cabina para viajar con una compañía low cost, seguramente el medio de transporte más utilizado por la mayoría de nosotros. Se trata de una exposición de presupuesto modesto y del todo DIY, una muestra objetual que cuenta con trabajos de 16 artistas repartidos por los cinco continentes y en donde la maleta es el elemento de continuidad entre todas las obras.

The Americas Poetry Festival of New York 2015 is a multilingual poetry festival and writers’ conference organized for a second time by poets and professors Carlos Aguasaco and Yrene Santos. This year the festival honors the memory of poet William Akcoo (AKA William Beltrán 1973-2011) and will take place on October 14, 15 and 16. El Festival de Poesía de las Américas Nueva York 2015 es un festival multilingüe y un encuentro de escritores único y diferente. La segunda edición del festival que organizan los poetas y profesores Carlos Aguasaco e Yrene Santos está dedicado a la memoria del poeta William Akcoo (Pseudónimo de William Beltrán 1973-2011).

CERVANTES BIENNIUM DON QUIXOTE: 400 YEARS

2015 marks the celebration of the four hundredth anniversary of the publication of the Second Part of Don Quixote (1615) and of the book Ocho comedias y ocho entremeses nunca representados (1615), and also of the death of Cervantes. The author, his works, and his lush literary era, are the protagonists of the Cervantes Biennium program.

En el año 2015 celebramos el cuarto centenario de la publicación de la Segunda parte del Quijote (1615), del volumen Ocho comedias y ocho entremeses nunca representados (1615) y del fallecimiento de Cervantes. 16th and 17th century Spanish and Latin American theater forms a living diversity of theatrical practices that transfused the multiplicity of cultural dynamics of the era while at the same time it was nourished by them. If culture is, first and foremost, symbols, relations, ideologies and creativity, 16th and 17th century theater was the privileged space to explore the particular characteristics of the theatrum mundi. El teatro español e hispanoamericano de los siglos XVI y XVII constituye una pluralidad orgánica de prácticas dramáticas que permeó y se alimentó de múltiples dinámicas culturales de la época. Si la cultura es, ante todo, símbolos, relaciones, ideología y creatividad, el teatro de los siglos XVI y XVII fue un espacio privilegiado desde donde indagar los rasgos del theatrum mundi.

The bonds between music and literature have been a constant throughout history. Poetry was born hand in hand with music, and music was meant for dancing, which initially was endowed with a sacred and liturgical role. In this publication, Professor Alcalá revisits those elements in European Literature that connected the word music with the arts, beginning in the 15th century up to the 21st century. Los vínculos entre la literatura y la música han sido una constante a lo largo de la historia. La poesía nació unida a la música y la música estaba destinada al baile, que inicialmente poseía un carácter litúrgico y sagrado. El profesor Alcalá en esta publicación revisita aquellos elementos de la literatura europea que conectaron la palabra, la música y las artes, iniciando su recorrido en el siglo XV, y llegando hasta el siglo XXI.

It was in 1938, the year in which her third collection of poems Tala was published, that Gabriela Mistral, keenly aware of the dramatic situation that was affecting Spain, made the decision to donate all the proceeds of this publication to benefit the institutions that housed the “displaced children from the war zones.” En 1938, el año en que se publica Tala, su tercera colección de poemas, Gabriela Mistral, plenamente consciente de la dramática situación que afectaba a España, decide donar todas las ganancias de esta publicación para ayudar a las instituciones que daban albergue a los “niños desplazados de las zonas de guerra”.

The marriage between fiction and reality in narrative is indissoluble. From fiction, the author takes a dialectical position regarding human reality and its historical circumstances. Sometimes the author makes an inquiry on the nature of fiction and how it penetrates everyday life to reinvent it. Other times, he searches for answers, while always writing what readers need to read to reflect upon their reality. The journey of the author takes off from a particular context to fly, together with the reader, into the universal.

Lydia Cacho is a Mexican journalist, feminist, and human rights activist. She was the first woman in Mexican history to take to trial an organized crime ring involved with child pornography, sexual tourism and trafficking of women. Cacho is the winner of numerous international awards for her journalism, including the Civil Courage Prize, the Wallenberg Medal, and the Olof Palme Prize together with Roberto Saviano. In 2010, she was named a World Press Freedom Hero of the International Press Institute

The project seeks to create a new space and opportunity to empower the concept of community among Spanish speakers in New York; let them learn how to create a narrative and present it in public; open a platform to the Spanish-speaking community where they can express their own experiences. The workshop project culminates in this storytelling performance before an audience at Instituto Cervantes. The Moth en español, dirigido por el legendario grupo de contadores de historias The Moth y organizado por el Consulado General de España en Nueva York (Spain Culture NY) y el Instituto Cervantes, es un proyecto de narración de historias para hispanohablantes, que tiene como objetivo: crear un nuevo espacio para potenciar el concepto de comunidad entre hispanohablantes en Nueva York; enseñarles a cómo crear una narrativa y presentarla en público; proveer a la comunidad hispana de una plataforma en la cual puedan expresar sus propias experiencias. Soprano Raquel Andueza and La Galanía, the ensemble she cofounded in 2010 with Jesús Fernández Baena, present a program with music from the age of Miguel de Cervantes (15471616), with texts by Calderón de la Barca, Quevedo and Cervantes himself, among others. The concert “Yo soy la locura” is a rare opportunity to listen to wonderful music from the 17th century Iberian Peninsula. Present and introduce: Álvaro Torrente, Executive Director, Instituto Complutense de Ciencias Musicales. La soprano Raquel Andueza y La Galanía, formación fundada en 2010 por ella y Jesús Fernández Baena, presentan un programa con música de la época de Miguel de Cervantes (1547 – 1616) y textos de Calderón de la Barca, Quevedo y el propio Cervantes, entre otros. Enrique Granados (1867-1916) spent the last months of his life in New York, and his stay included some of the most important artistic successes of his life. As the hundredth anniversary of his death approaches, we will rediscover his important contribution to our musical heritage. The program includes some of his most important vocal compositions and the dance from the opera Goyescas, which he composed in NY for the premiere of the opera at the Metropolitan in 1916. After working in public relations for Yves SaintLaurent and Valentino, she took over Studio 54 and turned it into the most fashionable club in New York. Located on 54th Street, Studio 54 was a space of freedom and experimentation, frequented by Andy Warhol, John Travolta, Grace Jones, Donna Summer, Eartha Kitt, Alice Cooper, Farrah Fawcett, Gia Carangi, Al Pacino, and by older stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Gloria Swanson and Bette Davis; it played a key role in the rise of disco music. POLICIES REFUNDS

To request a refund, please send a written request by email to classprogram@cervantes.org before the first day of class. Cancellations by telephone or regular mail are not accepted. A refund will then be issued less a $75 administration fee. Refunds are not offered for private lessons. However, if you request a refund during the following 24 hours of your registration you can have the whole refund.

MAKE UP CLASSES & TRANSFERS

It is possible to make up one missed class per term by attending a class in another course of the same level, subject to availability. Once you have arranged the Make Up class is not possible to reschedule it. This will have to be arranged through the Academic Department, which may be reached at classprogram@cervantes.org or 212.308.4420 ext.3. Once classes have started, it is possible to switch courses before the second session of the course.

CANCELLATIONS

Instituto Cervantes reserves the right to cancel classes and workshops, adjust curricula, and change teachers during sessions if necessary without advanced notice. Courses are sometimes cancelled due to insufficient enrollment (less than 4 students). If your course is cancelled, you will be notified by telephone or email and given the option to transfer to another class or to receive a full refund.

The library, located in the heart of Manhattan, offers reference services, bibliographic information, loans and inter-library loans, an online catalog, and internet access. Access to the library’s facilities and collections is free and open to the public with lending privileges available for ICNY members. 85,000 volumes including books, magazines, audiovisual and multimedia materials. Due to the focus of the library most of the material is in Spanish or the other official languages of Spain (Basque, Catalan or Galician). Resource center for the study and teaching of Spanish as a foreign language. The most outstanding collections of the library are in the areas of Spanish and Spanish American literature & cinema, with more than 5,000 feature films and documentaries. Children’s and Young Adult literature. The library is a resource for all types of users: students at all levels, from elementary to graduate school, students of Spanish as a foreign language, professors and researchers as well as the general public. The electronic collection includes audiobooks, e-books, video stories, along with access to databases, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, magazines and newspapers. Anyone with an ICNY membership card and connection to internet can access the platform and download or borrow an e-book.

RENTALS Instituto Cervantes New York at Amster Yard is the perfect location to host your next event or meeting. As a recently restored historical landmark, ICNY offers a venue that is both charming and modern, providing an ideal space to make your event extra special. Our historic building and lovely garden offer everything you need to ensure a successful event. ICNY is conveniently located in vibrant Midtown Manhattan, near the 51st and 53rd St. & Lexington Ave subway stations and minutes away from Grand Central Terminal. Bus stops are also available on both 2nd & 3rd Avenues. Facility space available for rental includes our auditorium, gallery, multifunction room and Amster Yard garden.

Auditorium: Our modern auditorium can accommodate 130 guests and is a perfect setting for conferences, lectures, meetings, presentations, and seminars, as well as visual and performing arts such as private performances, cultural events, award ceremonies and film premieres. The full stage is backed up with advanced video projection, sound and lighting capabilities, in addition to the availability of dressing rooms and a private restroom. State-of-the-art wireless technology and infrastructure also permit for two real-time translators allowing for events to be held in up to three languages simultaneously.

The gallery offers a unique and elegant setting that is perfect for events such as gatherings and receptions for up to 80 guests. Garden: Our lovely garden located in the heart of Manhattan is the perfect setting for receptions or gatherings accompanying any other activity that takes place at ICNY. Named after James Amster, the designer that remodeled the building and garden in 1944, our historical courtyard is considered one of the most beautiful small enclosures in the Turtle Bay neighborhood. This space can comfortably hold over 100 people. Multifunction Room: ICNY can provide you with attractive office space that is perfect for training sessions, small group discussions and offsite meetings. This flexible room can accommodate working group(s) that can be configured according to your needs for up to 25 people. The multifunction room is fully furnished, equipped to handle your business needs to maximize productivity and features the latest technology, including built-in flat screens, broadband connections and white boards.
