THE CUBAN AMERICANS GEANDY PAVÓN PHOTOGRAPHY
Opening! Thursday, February 4, 7-8:30 pm Sat, Feb 20 Free admission I believe that we Cuban Americans are a people “trapped” between two stereotypes. The Cuban Americans is centered on the idea of the hyphen, developed by Gustavo Pérez Firmat, as the time that separates, both culturally and in name, that which is Cuban from that which is American. This intermediate space generates a sort of timelessness and, therefore, strangeness; a complex space of uncertainty and anachronism that is the central element of my work. REFLECTION OF SHADOWS GLADYS TRIANA PHOTOGRAPHY
Opening! Thursday, March 3, 7-8:30 pm Sat, March 18 Free admission The exhibit, Reflections of Shadows, includes a video trilogy by Cuban artist Gladys Triana, with a selection of four of her photography series since 2008. Throughout her artistic trajectory, Triana has continuously renewed and reinvented her language, particularly through photography, as a means of expression and reflection on the human condition. In her photography, the artist transforms small objects from daily life into irreconcilable sculptured shapes, creating an iconography that speaks eloquently about our fragile surroundings in our journey through this world. For Triana, photography is not a reproduction of reality, but rather, a kind of alchemy that transforms reality by creating new meaning. Reflections of Shadows places the viewer before a cosmic realm and offers a mise-en-scène of a metaphysical poem by JosÊ Triana about alphabets shaped by the dread and marvel of life. Gladys Triana shows us that photography can be quite an adequate medium for philosophical musings. Part of the program Havana Evenings & Femenine Space

SOUND VS SENSE: INTERSECTIONS
VÍCTOR AGUADO, MIGUEL ÁLVAREZ FERNÁNDEZ, JUAN LUIS FERRER-MOLINA, RICHARD GARET & MARÍA CHÁVEZ SOUND ART
Opening! Tuesday, March 22, 7-8:30 pm Sat, April 9 Free Admission Sound and language have a challenging relationship. What exactly does it mean to “understand” what we hear? This doubt is expressed through various artistic forms in this exhibition, taking the form of a dialogue (while at the same time it tests the limits of this concept) and blurring the lines that divide aesthetic categories as apparently well-defined as music, poetry or the visual arts. In their installations and in the eventful relations formed between them, artists Víctor Aguado, Miguel Álvarez-Fernández, María Chávez, Ferrer-Molina and Richard Garet place us face to face with some of the infinite nuances that constitute and inhabit our language. Sound and sense will collide and coalesce, repulse and intertwine, in a dialogue that is, in the end, as impossible as communication itself.

PERFORMANCE: INTERSECTIONS Monday, March 29, 7-8:30 pm. Free Admission RSVP: cult1ny@cervantes.es As part of the sound art exhibition Sound vs Sense: Intersections, we offer a series of live presentations by artists M. Álvarez-Fernández, M. Chávez, F. Molina and R. Garet. These concerts and performances will delve into some of the questions the exhibition posits, mainly about broadening the concept of listening and its relation to processes of meaning. The materials, processes and ideas that come into play in these artistic acts encompass many types of perceptions, activating resources as diverse as algorithmic composition, analog synthesis, turntablism, pre-existing circuit alteration, appropriation or data sonification, among others, which will attempt to provide spaces and times with new meanings.

THE FRENCH-SPANISH RESISTANCE (1936-1950) Free Admission Spanish
In no other country did the Spanish Civil War have such an impact as in France. The Resistance was born at first as simple gestures, passing to the written word the articulation of a discourse and the armed fight. In a time where the hegemonic interests of some world powers are again disguised as Europeanism, it would only be right to germinate a new the seeds of our shared history.

The marriage between fiction and reality in narrative is indissoluble. From fiction, the author takes a dialectical position regarding human reality and its historical circumstances. Sometimes the author makes an inquiry on the nature of fiction and how it penetrates everyday life to reinvent it. Other times, he searches for answers, while always writing what readers need to read to reflect upon their reality. The journey of the author takes off from a particular context to fly, together with the reader, into the universal.

THE MASTERMIND WITH LORI CARLSON HIJUELOS & ERNESTO QUIÑONEZ MODERATED BY AARON PETROVICH
General Admission: $5 | ICNY Members: Free In English Love, murder, and political intrigue come alive in Guatemalan-born Unger’s latest novel, based on a beguiling true story of Guatemala’s recent past. The novel is not Unger’s fictional Guillermo Rosensweig, nor is it the fictionalized version of former Guatemalan president Colom; it is Miguel Paredes, modeled after Luis Mendizábal, who was Guatemala’s most notorious spy and the one man with knowledge of all the country’s secrets. The Mastermind is a novel that will make us reflect on the relation between fiction and reality.

A GUAJIRO IN NEW YORK WITH YUNIEL JIMÉNEZ TRÍO
General Admission: $20 | ICNY & CCCNY Members: Free
Cuban tres player and poet Yuniel Jiménez will present a flawless work that highlights the music of the Cuban countryside, played by an immigrant in a great city like New York. His music started in Santa Clara; he then moved to Havana, Cuba, where he graduated from the National School of Arts. He traveled to Barcelona and later came to New York, never forgetting the Cuban countryside and African music. This personal voyage marks his universe, rich in sounds and styles. The poetics of his music provides a good account of the joys and sorrows and pervades the biography of a guajiro in New York. Jiménez has worked with Liuba María Hevia, Luisito Quintero, Yunior Terry, Oriente López Chocolate Armenteros, Kiko Pi de la Serra, Javier Carlos Lage, Karel García and Mane Ferret. Guajiro en Nueva York are Yuniel Jiménez (Cuban tres and vocals) (Tres Cubano y Voz); Jorge Bringas (bass and backup vocals) (Bajo y coros); and Manuel Carro (percussion and backup vocals) ( Percusión y Coros). Part of Havana Evening's Program.

General Admission: $20 | ICNY & CCCNY Members: Free
Paquito D’Rivera, winner of 14 Grammy awards, will speak live about his experiences during more than six decades of musical endeavors. A lifetime gathered in this unusual epistolary work that starts with a letter with no return address from a presumed fan that asks D’Rivera for advice about a musical career. Paquito uses this character as the common thread to narrate his own artistic career, which the audience at Instituto Cervantes will have the opportunity to hear in his own voice. Part of Havana Evening's Program.

The characters of this hilarious cycle face the troubles of daily life in a unique way, which will trigger a chain of misguided actions and mistakes that will inconceivably lead to a happy ending. This is the essence of Spanish comedy, the film genre that better represents Spain’s film industry.

Victor, a filmmaker of sorts, gathers around his deathbed his most loyal collaborators to try to start what will probably be his posthumous work. They will gather in unusual conviviality at the place where filming is supposedly under way, while they confusedly discuss their relationships and the origins of their respective anxieties regarding the creation of fiction…

BY MERCEDES ÁLVAREZ, SPAIN 2011 The abandonment and demolition of an old house, with all its furniture, its plentiful library and its full load of personal memories, becomes the starting point for this film, which tries to portray some of the aspects of the new world. The camera peeps into the real state furor, turned into a showroom and promise of financial gain or of the paradise; into financial investment brokers, gurus and preachers of success and mythology. Personal and collective memory, dreams and desires will be ultimately transformed into pure merchandising.

FEMININE SPACE The effective presence of women in the film industry is a challenge that seeks a real equality of employment access and opportunities, but it also enriches this topic with other views and it aids in the creation of new male and female characters. Feminine Space will present, on the one hand, a selection of short films by female directors, and, on the other, two unique contemporary full-length films from Spain.

Lupe lives shut away in her house, afflicted by agoraphobia, with a teenage son that loathes her; a very different life to the one she led as a rock star during the eighties. This is a film with magic and esoteric undertones. Through its female characters, it narrates a story of personal triumph, accompanied by a soundtrack that takes us back to that past.

In 1966, Basilio Martín Patino sent Berta nine letters. Almost fifty years later, Virginia García del Pino attempts to write the tenth. The letter she shares with Basilio Martín Patino is the portrait of an identity in flight that, under the precept stated by Patino himself, “to forget every rule about what should be done,” explores what is left of the rebellious student that wrote to Berta in 1966, at the start of a brillianzt career as a film director.

TRADITION (Thursday, February 11) The prestigious Artadi winery proposed that Rioja recognized single vineyard and village wines, and expressed its willingness to leave the region in 2016 if its requests were not met. But these ideas seem to be at odds with traditional Reserva and Gran Reserva wines, that are made from a selection of the best lots, most times blending grapes from different areas within Rioja. This wine seminar is devoted to debate on these controversial topics, tasting top wines from each different camp.

RIBERA DEL DUERO: TO BLEND OR NOT TO BLEND (Thursday, Feb 18) Vega Sicilia, along with Tempranillo, had been using Cabernet, Merlot and Malbec, as well as local Garnacha and Albillo for over a century before the official recognition of Ribera del Duero. Thus, when this appellation was founded these varieties were also accepted. However, it was stipulated that Tempranillo must make up a minimum of 75% of the final wine while the other varieties can take up the rest. As a result, some wines are blends, but others are made with 100% Tempranillo. In this tasting we will compare these two different styles, as we previously did with Rioja. THE ULTIMATE TEMPRANILLO CHALLENGE: RIOJA VS. RIBERA VS. TORO (Thursday, February 25) SOLD OUT TEMPRANILLO VS. SANGIOVESE (Thursday, March 3) Tempranillo is the grape of Rioja and Sangiovese the queen of Tuscany. Their traditional wines, made from these two varieties, are elegant, polished and perfumed, yet powerful and food friendly. In this tasting we will compare the wines made from these two world-class grapes in these two acclaimed regions 2012: FIRST LOOK AT A GREAT VINTAGE (Thursday, March 10) The 2012 vintage delivered wines of outstanding quality in most of the top regions of Spain. In some of them, it crowned an unprecedented streak of four consecutive outstanding vintages. This tasting seminar is our first look at 2012, a vintage poised for greatness. BLIND AMBITION (Thursday, March 17) This special, challenging and fun tasting is devoted to identify the defining features of some of the most famous grape varieties of Spain. In each of the selected varieties we will first taste a classic wine and then we will compare it to other wines to assess similarities and differences due to soil and winemaking factors. This will be an enjoyable learning experience that will help us refine our palates.
