Marilyn has her own ideas about trends, fashion, buying and what women should have in their wardrobes. After twenty five years of buying, fifteen of which took place in Europe, she felt the time had come to open her own shop. Tired of selling full wardrobes by appointment only, Marilyn chose a more open environment for her store. She designed the whole store around the customer’s shopping comfort. Marilyn feels it’s all about trying to find things customers will use and enjoy wearing. More and more trends are being set by women and not the fashion designers. Designers have for years given women a grand selection of style, color and excitement but not much individuality. The days of buying a whole look from one designer is fading and being replaced by

a collection of creative individual pieces by many designers. Women are craving more creative ideas, leading to custom and individual looks. Marilyn, a veteran of European trade shows and showroom buying, feels that the new fashion is found outside of trade shows and showrooms. She admits it is more work looking for designers’ workrooms or studios; however, you will sense the difference once you walk into one of her shops. She buys with a sharp eye for good taste and special item pieces that you won’t see anywhere else. “It’s personal”, Marilyn says, “I enjoy helping women find the right accessory for their wardrobes.”

Editor’s Letter From the beginning of time, fashion, style and beauty have been present in everyone and everything. It is apparent in what we wear, where we dine, how we live, what we eat and what defines us as human beings. There are three main components that set Bayfront apart from the rest; individuality, inspiration & timelessness. In our debut issue, we tackle pressing issues such as the oil crisis in the Gulf of Mexico while counterbalancing its gravity with pages of delectable fashion and news from the entertainment world. From Oscar de la Renta to BCBG, we present fall trends that taunt and inspire us to find the beauty within. My promise to the readers of Bayfront Magazine is that I pledge to deliver newsworthy stories and the most imminent fashion trends from the runways of Paris to your favorite boutique. PHOTOGRAPHERS William Occhi

Long Island born photographer William Occhi has always been insatiably curious and deeply driven by the visual arts. At a young age, he strived to further his skills in drawing, painting and sculpting. The idea of taking the time to “see” light and shadow came from the father of his childhood friend, Francisco Perez, a prolific sculptor, painter and photographer. William attended the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), where he befriended several fashion designers and quickly became excited by the fashion world. While in college William began to assist several prominent fashion photographers and worked in local photo labs to further immerse himself into his art. After graduating FIT, he started work as a freelance advertising and fashion photographer, doing work for Pepsi Co, KLM, and shooting stills for films such as Balto for Amblin Entertainment as well as music videos for Skid Row and Salt-N-Pepa.

Waleska Occhi

Originally from Chile, Waleska Occhi also studied fashion buying and merchandising at FIT. While in school, she wanted to try her hand at modeling and acting, so she went to HB Studio for acting. While there, Waleska decided to pursue a career as a makeup artist. Honing her skills, she worked for several of the most prestigious makeup lines in NYC, such as Bobbi Brown, Shu Uemura and MAC. She had the opportunity to do makeup on several celebrities including Heidi Klum and Kathy Smith. Furthermore, she has worked on numerous fashion shows including the iconic 7th on 6th in Bryant Park. Currently, Waleska is the Production Manager and Resident Makeup Artist for Occhi Photography, based out of Miami Beach. Having an exceptional work ethic and extensive management experience makes the job of production manager a natural fit. Her philosophy is WORK TO LIVE, NOT LIVE TO WORK.

TRIBUTE TO

Brittany Murphy By Tom Stoup

Though the 1977-born actress was part of Hollywood’s on-screen community since the age of 14, she first made waves as Tai in ‘95’s sleeper hit, “Clueless”. Tai, based on Harriet from Jane Austen novel “Emma”, is our grounding point in an otherwise outrageously garish, image-obsessed world. It was with this humble role we began to see ourselves in Murphy - a reflection that rarely faded throughout her catalogue. Through fallenfrom-grace nannying in “Uptown Girls” to self-destructive characters in both “Girl, Interrupted” and “Spun”, there would always be something about the star’s relative outsider demeanor we could empathize with. Along with entertainment work, Murphy frequently donated her celebrity to worthy causes. In ‘96 she recorded an informational piece on Angeles National Forest’s Wildlife Waystation, enthusiastically promoting animal rights and educating about the unique facility. With Alyssa Milano in ‘03 she impressed troops during a USO tour for which she was lauded as a fun, caring individual who was there for the right reasons. Famous friends and collaborators of Murphy’s recall her as “unique and electric” (“8 Mile” director Curtis Hanson), “effervescent” (“Shrinking Charlotte” co-star Matthew Lillard) and “a little piece of sunshine” (“Just Married” co-star and ex-boyfriend Ashton Kutcher). Family members, including single mother Sharon who risked anything and everything to help her daughter succeed, regarded her as “a shining star.”

MTV’s HOT JOCK

Jayson Blair By Toni Ferrara

MTV’s new hit scripted series, “The Hard Times of RJ Berger” stars Jayson Blair who talks exclusively to Bayfront Magazine about being the BMOC (Big Man on Campus), the exciting changes over at MTV, and why he thinks RJ Berger will continue to have a lot more Hard Times. Jayson first captured our attention as the smoldering good-looking guy in the elevator on the Taco Bell™ commercials, then by several guest-starring roles on Heroes, Glee, Rizzoli & Isles and CSI: NY. Now he’s making another big career move in June, playing the arch nemesis for our show’s namesake. He’s a version of the handsome, over egotistical jock that dates the prettiest girl in school and still finds humor in picking on the nerdy kids in class. His character Max Owens is Mr. Popularity who makes the girls swoon and all of the guys want to be his best friend. Blair sat down last week with me to discuss the show:

14

www.BAYFRONTMAGAZINE.COM

Your character, Max Owens on the show is quite the BMOC, was that similar to your real life in high school?

I too could have been called the BMOC in high school. I was voted Homecoming King. HA! Still cracks me up. That said, I was popular for a series of completely different and all goodhearted reasons. It was a surprise to hear that this series was scripted, something new to the MTV line-up in quite a few years. Why do you think it’s important for MTV to opt for a scripted series vs. another reality show?

I think it’s important for MTV to move into scripted series because it was time for them to re invent themselves and change the market on what’s hip, yet again. That’s what they’re known for, right? Tell us in your own words about Max Owens. What might people not know

about Max?

Max does most of the bad things he does because he’s insecure and feels threatened. You should see him with Jenny behind closed doors… He’s a big softy… There’s a bit of an intense David and Goliath struggle between your character, Max Owens and R.J. Berger. Describe the importance of this dynamic.

The rivalry between Max and R.J. is important because there always has to be someone keeping the man down. Max gives people a reason to want to root for the underdog. Not to mention, some really funny circumstances come out of the rivalry. Aside from Hard Times, what future roles should we expect to see you in?

I will be Guest Starring on Rizzioli & Isles this August.

“Twilight” Star

Kristen Stewart By Tom Stoup

Los Angeles native Kristen Jaymes Stewart is undoubtedly best known for playing Isabella Swan, lip-nibbling vampire lover in the “Twilight Saga” phenomenon, but what might we have missed or, perhaps, not given a chance? The early-blooming star was discovered piping “I Have a Little Dreidel” for an elementary school play and has gone on to rub elbows with such Hollywood heavies as Sharon Stone and Diane Lane in “Cold Creek Manor” and “Fierce People”, respectively. Nonchalantly rolling with punches and perks, the actress boasts a professional filmography pre-dating the recent decade, commencing from her screen debut in 1999’s “The Thirteenth Year”. Opting to complete much of her education outside a traditional school setting, “KStew” focused her adolescence on acting - a bold decision easily attributable to her oftcomplimented, mature-beyond-her-years disposition. She garnered the public eye’s gaze, beginning to win what would eventually become millions of hearts, at the mere age of 12 for her turn as Jodie Foster’s diabetic daughter in home invasion thriller, “Panic Room”. Audiences weren’t the only captives to her goon-dodging performance, as the film’s head honchos - particularly Foster herself - had nothing but glowing praise to shower upon the budding talent. Not afraid to venture further through tense subject matter, Stewart moved on to appear in Showtime’s emotionally demanding feature, “Speak”. Her portrayal therein, of a verbally shut down rape victim, attained critical acclaim for its careful nuance and unconventionally caustic levity. Far from finished sharing the marquee with practiced predecessors, Stewart soon joined Meg Ryan for “In the Land of Women” in a role she claims to have personally related to a great deal, then Sean Penn’s “Into the Wild” with Catherine Keener. She even took center stage in the Sam Raimi-financed horror flick,

“The Messengers”. In 2007, on the set of Greg Mottola’s dramedy “Adventureland”, she met with “Twilight” helmer Catherine Hardwicke. Through the actress’ potent combination of innocence and desire, Hardwicke became desperately enchanted. Thus, Edward Cullen’s soulmate was found. Between full-steam “Twilight” productions, Stewart has continued to explore provocative, independent cinema. Last year she took the mic sporting legendary rocker Joan Jett’s duds, ‘do and delivery in “The Runaways” alongside worthy child sensation and “Twilight Saga” co-star Dakota Fanning. This year, her performance in “Welcome to the Rileys” buzzed throughout the Sundance Film Festival, touted by USA Today as “fearless” while Roger Ebert declared, “I’m discovering an important new actress.” Considering the internet’s probing social outlets, today’s is a culture of open exposure and, subsequently, vulnerability. Stewart shamelessly embodies the mentality behind that vulnerability in aspects of her public life, further implementing it professionally to signify her film roles. Her relevance in pop society is relatable and, considering many of her contemporaries, unique. In brazen realism and informality does she endear. The timing for this loose-filtered brand of celebrity couldn’t be better. It is difficult to envision such candor seeing similar degrees of success at an earlier period. As opposed to a creator of the times, Kristen Stewart is a product of them, as are we all. Through this relaxed yet earnest nature she has carved her niche on the Walk of Fame. In heyday’s midst she may be, but if her filmography to date forecasts anything, it is that she will persevere beyond, seeking challenges regardless of the tumultuous tabloid tempest’s inevitable attempts to toss her. Stewart is a star to be regarded beyond surface depths, and surely a star to be remembered when all is said and done.

Nathan Brooks

In May, Naples singer/songwriter Nathan Brooks flew in a jet airplane to LA. He spent a couple of weeks taking his musical notes and lyrics on paper and, with the help of producer Justin Glasco, transformed them into full arrangements that really bring the songs to life. “What an incredible experience that was,” laughed Brooks, 29, recalling long stretches of recording time with little sleep. “There really are no words that can describe the intensity of the process to create this album. It literally takes all of your energy, but the results….that’s what makes it so exciting at the same time.” Studio musicians included Jason Orme, who plays guitar for Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan, and bass player Jonathan Ahrens, who has worked with Jason Mraz, Christina Aguilera and Jewel. All the work culminated into the album “Dream in Truths,” which will be officially released at 7 p.m. on September 10 during Nathan’s album launch event at The RitzCarlton Golf Resort, Naples. From there, Nathan’s tour will include Kansas City, Indianapolis and St. Louis for starters. He hopes to someday tour internationally. “My album reflects my own musical influences, which range from John Mayer and Jason Mraz to Warren Barfield and Sanctus Real,” Nathan said. “It’s a cool vibe with songs that I think people can relate to.”

It’s that ability to connect with people that producer Justin believes is the key to Nathan’s longevity in the music business. “He knows how to speak to people on a personal level, and there aren’t many artists who can do that. The album is really creative and includes the cool vibes of horns and strings,” said Justin. Nathan’s journey to today actually began as a youngster when he would direct his church’s choir from the pews. By the time he reached the fifth grade, the Kansas City native was playing the piano. Before graduating from Northwest Missouri State University, he learned to play guitar. After graduation, his travels took him to Nashville, where he recorded his EP, “Waiting for Now.” It was during a performance at the Grand Emporium and Beaumont Club in Kansas City in 2006 that country music stars Big and Rich crashed his show. Nathan didn’t mind the intrusion. When he’s not writing songs in the middle of the night or working as the music director at First Christian Church Nathan enjoys running, biking, and travelling (he’s been all over the US, and to Paris, Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Nicaragua). Some day, he hopes to meet John Mayer, “he is the total package, amazing writer, brilliant player, and amazing entertainer,” Nathan said.

One of Nathan’s favorite movies, “The Shawshank Redemption,” features one of his favorite actors, Morgan Freeman, who says “Get busy living or get busy dying.” “That line resonates with me on a lot of levels,” Nathan said. “Life is for living and that’s part of what drives me to succeed.” While on the go, Nathan likes wearing jeans and favors clothes from Banana Republic, shoes from Kenneth Cole and a really good tailor who makes sure things fit his 6-foot, 4-inch frame. His shopping habits, however, are changing since he and his wife Stacy are expecting their first child, a son, at the end of this year. With two albums and countless performances, Nathan has learned a lot so far. “I’ll tell you one thing for sure. The music business isn’t for the faint of heart,” he laughed. “The playing and singing are the rewards, but it’s all the work before that, challenging yourself and really being honest about the person you are,” he said. “It’s also about balancing confidence while also remaining humble.” To hear some of Nathan’s music and for ticket information, visit www.nathanbrooksmusic.com. OC’s REAL HOUSEWIFE

Gretchen Rossi How is your makeup line Gretchen Christine Beaute doing?

My makeup line Gretchen Christine Beautè is doing great and has been a huge hit with all of its customers. I get emails and tweets everyday about how much people love the makeup! It is very gratifying that everyone is enjoying the products so much. I worked very hard to make sure we produced the highest possible, yet still affordable, quality. What inspired you to design a line of handbags?

The inspiration really came from demand. I received so many e-mails, facebook and twitter messages from fans inquiring about my fashion and style. Everyone wanted to know how they could replicate the look. I realized as I continued talking with everyone, all women

18

www.BAYFRONTMAGAZINE.COM

and men want to be fashionistas but, in this economy, we need to be recessionistas. I wanted to give every woman the opportunity to look like a million dollars without having to spend it. I focused on having the highest quality, functional yet fashionable handbags for the everyday woman at affordable prices. If you could compare your designs to another handbag line, what/who would it be?

I sat down and thought about all designer handbags I have had and what I liked and disliked about all of them. I used this inspiration to make my collections! I wanted the same quality and attention to detail incorporated into my bags, but it was very important to have a bag that was functional for the 2010 woman (computer, PDA, cell phone, make-up compartments etc.)

Did you design your line by hand/from scratch? Who helped you produce this?

Yes, we designed the bags from scratch. My partners, Lust for Luxe and head designer Jeff Catalano in particular, were a tremendous help in putting all the designs I wanted to create into fruition. We chose the silhouettes first and then chose the best leathers and materials to get a plush and rich look. We hand-picked all the embellishments and details from the tassel zipper pulls to the gold mushroom studs. Our launch includes two separate collections, our Pearlized Collection and our Woven Collection. In our Pearlized collection, we incorporated outside zipper pockets for easy access to cell phones and keys, a hidden zipper pull on the front of the bag for all the items you don’t want to misplace (valet or mall parking tickets, passports etc.), and probably our most unique feature, on the inside of each bag we created a custom built-in make up wall, we then covered it with a branded flap to protect your make-up from getting all over the bag. Our Woven collection includes the inside makeup wall and the outside zipper pull. Beautiful croc and leather interwoven with each other to create a very plush and gorgeous texture in

our handbags. We have an array of colors to choose from that will fit with every woman’s wardrobe. Bright, bold, and strong colors that allow a fashionista to stand out in a crowd! Where do you sell your handbags?

Currently we are exclusively with Shop NBC. I am debuting the line live on Shop NBC on July 3Oth. They will also have them for sale on their website at www.shopnbc. com. Eventually we will sell other handbag collections on my personal website www. gretchenchristine.com and eventually move into some large retail stores (Nordstrom, Saks, Bloomingdales, etc.). Do you have or will you have wallets to match?

Currently we do not have wallets but we do plan to have wallets that go with our collections in the near future. Are you still singing? We remember the song you wrote for Jeff and how well it took off. Will you be making any more songs or albums in the future?

Don’t get me wrong, I love to sing, but I never expected to be singing in public! I have always been a writer and I love the music industry. After investing in a music catalog, it propelled me into the business and the opportunities to meet with producers. I found it to be very therapeutic to sing and release the song I wrote about Jeff when he passed away. I have recorded another song already that is much more club-like and not so serious. I hope to release it soon but we will see how it all works out. It is a passion for me to sing but I need to remain focused on my collection and other projects I am working on right now.

If I had known that Jeff would take a turn for the worse and that I would lose him on national television, then I probably wouldn’t have done the show. At the time I was approached to do the show, he was told by doctors that he was going into remission. How are things between you and Slade?

Slade is amazing and he loves me unconditionally. He really understands the grieving process and what I was going through when I lost Jeff. He has been my rock this past year and a half and I look forward to a long future with him. He makes me so happy and I haven’t been this content in my life. Do you see marriage and kids in the future?

Absolutely! But tell life and God your plans and watch them laugh at you! I want what God wants for my life. I am excited for what is in store and am open to it all! Do you still spend time with Jeff’s kids?

I do! Jake was just in town about a month ago and I talk to them often. They are great amazing people and remind me so much of Jeff, so it means a lot to stay connected. Jeff always told me that no matter what, he wanted me in their lives; so I have made sure that happens. Has your relationship changed with any of the housewives since the season finale?

Not really. I only spend time with one of them off camera; the rest of the women aren’t really people I would call friends. Friends don’t treat or do the things some of them have done to me. I am not fake, so it is hard to pretend like I enjoy their company off season. What are your top beauty secrets?

What is your goal for your new line?

My goal is to bring quality, beauty, and functionality to the fashion-forward everyday woman with all the items in my collection. I want a woman to feel like a fabulous fashionista on a recessionista budget. Every woman loves to have a gorgeous looking handbag. We all want to look like we are carrying designer bags with high quality leathers and embellishments but without it costing us an arm and a leg. I have now found a way to meet that demand with the Gretchen Christine Collection. Is there anything that you would do differently after watching the past season?

moderation and I am active no matter what. I walk or ride my bike instead of drive to some places, like to the coffee shop or the local grocery store, when I can. I work-out with my own body weight mostly and what is accessible at the time. For instance, I travel so much that I have had to become accustom to figuring out how to use what I have around me to workout, which I have gotten really good at. I love to be outside, running, bike-riding, rollerblading, or hiking.

Well, if they are beauty secrets then I can’t tell you! J/K. I sincerely believe that beauty comes from within. I truly believe that if you aren’t happy with yourself or what your life has become, then you will never be beautiful on the outside. I am like every other girl: I love to look good, I wear Gretchen Christine Beaute’ (my make-up line), do my hair, love great clothes, but I also know that none of that matters unless I am a happy person on the inside. That will always shine through any beauty treatment. So the answer to that is…… My beauty secret is my faith and happiness!

Can you tell us three things we don’t know about you? grew up riding motorcycles and 1) Iwas always a tom-boy playing with the boys in the mud! was a hard-working real estate 2) Iagent and was in the top 7% worldwide of realtors before I started to get serious with Jeff. That success allowed me to buy my own home and have a lot of the luxuries that I have acquired to this day. the Lord and was raised in 3) Ialove very strict Christian home. I go to church almost every Sunday I am in town!

Do you have a daily workout routine?

Defy Aging Can you really defy aging, or is it all in your head?

D

id you ever wonder if there is a real fountain of youth somewhere out there? What causes us to mature and grow old? Can it be stopped? Well, according to most plastic surgeons and herbalistic practitioners, the solution to defying the aging process lies within the scalpel or the pill bottle. However, to what extent is botox, laser therapy and liposuction really the answer? Well, this will be the subject of interest as we explore the modern fountain of youth. Taking care of your body is an arduous yet vital task throughout your lifetime. There are the lucky and fortunate ones whose DNA is too good to be true, but for the most part, you are what you eat and what you do to expend calories. Of course it may be easier to exercise and adhere to a diet rather than go above and beyond to make oneself feel younger. Plastic surgery and dermatologic rejuvenation have become increasingly popular. Is plastic surgery for aesthetic reasons worth it? Well obviously the majority of skin plastic surgery will not hold up after several years, thereby making some people continue to want more and more until they have exhausted their money and psyche. Breast implants, for example, will need further surgical attention in

the long-term as they do not last forever. In the end, whether it is breast augmentation or liposuction, the less healthy you are at the time, the more risk for adverse events. With the rising number of plastic surgery procedures, there has been concern raised for the psychological effects of these rejuvenation procedures. Many decades ago, mental health specialists viewed people that pursued cosmetic surgery as having psychiatric disorders. Those individuals with a history of neurosis are more likely to have negative psychological results following a procedure. Psychologists are interested in further understanding what separates the people who have great results vs. the ones who pursue further and further medical procedures. Improving body image perception and quality of life are common benefits but obsession is likely the indicator of deeper struggles such as anxiety, depression or a personality disorder. Unrealistic expectations may even open the thought of suicide to rare individuals. So does this mean that the majority of people seeking plastic surgery have undiagnosed body dysmorphic disorder? Well not really; it is likely a minority of patients. However, the point of interest here is that there needs to be more psychological screening for patients seeking cosmetic surgery; there could be more than meets the eye.

NEaPOLITAN BEAUTY

Skincare and makeup rules for girls on the move. By Sarah Mihailoff

Fabulous Fall 2010 Makeup Trends & More As the long summer days are winding down, autumn is an excuse to go in for a few darker lowlights and grab the latest jewel tone additions to your wardrobe. Models gracing the runways presenting 2010 Fall Clothing trends from designers Kors Marc Jacobs to Diane Von Furstenberg seemed to have one specific makeup trend in common; a balance of muted and bold.

Balancing act Diane Von Furstenberg models all sauntered down the catwalk working a multi- dimensional smoked eye and neutral lips in their fall 2010 Look book ensembles. To create a similar smokey eye at home, use 2-3 striated colors of shadow with deep blues and greens layered over black cream base, a dramatic and exotic evening look. If you’ve never done a smoky eye at home, go visit the counter of your favorite makeup line and ask for a quick tutorial. Michael Kors debuted peachy coral lipstick shades on his models to complement the neutral color canvas of his Fall 2010 collection. The peach pouts were accentuated by very natural looking eye makeup and peachy-apricot shaded cheeks. To do this monotone look at home, try out NARS Barbarella sheer peach lipstick on your lips, Smash Box Naked Beauty Photo Finish Lid Primer on your eyelids and MAC Melba blush . Sweep on some mascara and this is a perfect daytime look. Numerous designers at New York fashion week

featured the 1960’s cat eye look again this year. To do this winged eyeliner look correctly and easily, waterproof liquid black eyeliner is essential. Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Zero Smudge Liquid Eye Liner is a favorite. For those girls comfortable enough to use an angled makeup brush, try dipping a MAC 263 Small Angle Brush into black or dark brown gel eyeliner and sweeping the color across your upper lid from the inner to the outer corner, then sweeping the color up in a rounded 45 degree angle that comes out 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 an inch from the outer corner or your eye. Give the cat eye impact by setting your liner with a black eye shadow and dusting this dark shadow along your lower lash line as well, then load on the mascara.

Beautiful eyes start with your eyebrows As every makeup artist knows, having the correctly shaped and manicured eyebrows gives a dimension and frame to the entire face and allows the eyes to truly stand out. In fact, models sporting the latest Narciso Rodriguez collection rocked nude faces with strong dark the correct structure and

arch of an eyebrow takes an eye for the natural and unique bone structure each of us have. If you don’t have enough of an eyebrow to shape in the first place, then try Eye Brows by MAC- it is self sharpening with a very narrow point which is perfect for filling in spots or drawing tiny little dashes to create the illusion of an eye brow.

The power of masking Contrary to popular belief, not all masks are made to leach the oils and moisture out of your skin. Masks can do a number of things from soothing, purifying and exfoliating to hydrating. If you want to make the results of your latest facial last longer, using a mask one-to-two times per week can do wonders to maintain your fresh face. Visual Changes Fruit Acid Masque detoxifies, cleanses and exfoliates your face, with natural ingredients like orange, apple, lemon essential oils and Dead Sea mud. Put the mask on in 1⁄4 inch thick layer on damp skin, then feel the gentle tingle as it works its magic. Jump into a steamy shower after about 15 minutes if the mask begins to harden. Steam will help the ingredients deeper penetrate your pores, and keep the mask soft. To rinse the mask off, just use water and rub the mask in circular motions to further exfoliate while taking it off at the same time. Rinse with cool water and tone with natural Witch Hazel on a cotton ball to remove any excess residue that may be lingering. You will see and feel the results if you make this part of your routine.

Amanda Jaron Fine Jewelry Designer

a

Amanda left New York City (NYC) as the head jewelry and watch designer for Avon Products after the birth of her twins in 2004. While in NYC, she designed for many household name jewelry brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Nine West and Jones NY. She also enjoyed working with Paris Couture Houses to create collections for the everyday American lifestyle. Now living in Naples with her family, her casual life in paradise has allowed her to launch her own sterling silver jewelry brand. She can be found on national television selling her namesake line “A. JARON STUDIO” on HSN. Her couture line in sterling and 18 ct gold can be found on the Who’s Who of Hollywood and Naples, Jamie Pressly, Niecy Nash and Sharon Stone. What/who is your inspiration for your trademark style? My life experience is huge. I grew up

in FL and did not realize how much that influenced me until I moved to NY. I spent 11 years

designing in NYC. Now I see the influence from that time too. Today, I draw so much directly from my clients. I never know what is going to come into the studio. This year, I have had everything from a broken Chinese jade tree leaf to a 10 ct diamond tennis bracelet come into my studio for an A JARON “Bling Over”. Yes, custom jewelry “renovations” is what I call BLING OVERS! It is the ultimate in Glam recycling! Who is your personal favorite jewelry designer (other than yourself)? Funny, I do not

wear anything other than my own work! But, if there was one jewelry designer that I admire, it would be a British designer, Elizabeth Gage. She really does not follow fashion trends. She just designs what feels right and does huge, high carat over the top sculptures out of gold and diamonds and vintage-found stones and coins. She is very old school, no Ecommerce™, no Facebook™. What do you find most beautiful? In spir-

it: honesty and integrity. I believe in being true to

yourself and others. In material: anything purple! Not sure why, but any object in any shade of aubergine, purple, plum, violet or lavender just looks amazing to my eye! Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Relaxing! My life is so go, go, go... Funny how I thought by moving my studio to FL from NYC I would be living the slow life! Well... not! I am so thankful that my clients are calling and that my days are filled doing exactly what I love to do! In ten years, let’s hope that I can find the balance that we all are looking for! If you could give your daughter only one piece of (useful) advice when she is older, what would it be? Follow your heart and live

passionately. Life is so short, I cannot imagine what my life would have been like had I taken a job at a bank right out of college. I would probably be doing something far removed from my life’s dreams? I am so saddened when I hear people saying to me, what if or I should have.

outure is to fashion-lovers what a Rembrandt is to the sophisticated art collector. The Fall/Winter 2010/2011 collections shown in Paris in July exhibited this fact with verity in true theatrical form with gothic drama, natural elements and pale hues mixed with shimmering metallics. The usual suspects, such as Dior, Chanel and Givenchy, stand out in the media

spotlight with their continued success on the catwalks. However, lesser known designers such as Elie Saab, Franck Sorbier and Stéphane Rolland, validate themselves as master artisans. Franck Sorbier’s collection encompassed a wide variety of inspirations including a flouncy layered tutu and bustier sun-washed in natural color, comprised of elements such as raffia and hemp. In contrast was the nod to the Parisian woman blended with a bit of the gothic in a black,

frayed peplum jacket over a long biascut silk crepe skirt of the same color. And the fairy tale was complete with the ball gown assembled as a bustier over a long, full skirt complete with flowing train in panné velvet. Stéphane Rolland proved his talents in draping and tailored

construction by means of modern silhouettes and soft femininity. The designer manipulated clouds of crepe de chine, chiffon and organza, into sculptural works of art contrasting the soft, billowing textiles with dark shades of charcoal, blacks, and browns. A step further there is a black lambskin dress, skirted with a black, double satin train. The end result is a collection filled with subtle beauty, as fluid as the fabrics themselves.

Lebanese-born designer Elie Saab stood out of the crowd with his use of heavy draping and similar light-weight, sinuous materials. Graceful and elegant georgettes, chiffons, and tulles were topped with elaborate detailing such as heavy embroidery, ruffling and lace overlays for an over-the-top dose of glamour in the style of old Hollywood. Pale neutrals, glistening metallics and deep rouge reds created a setting of intense drama in the sea of sumptuousness.

Style STYLE MATTERS

Stylish DNA?

w

We all know someone, regardless of his or her age, size and budget, who looks fabulous in just about everything they put on. These are the men and women who always get it right and seemingly have an endless closet of stunning clothes (I’ll come back to this). It’s tempting therefore to take the view that some people are simply born with an innate sense of style and that’s just the way it is – part of their DNA – so the rest of us might as well pack up and go home. I am here to tell you that really isn’t the case. While there are geniuses from birth in every field (okay, so Mozart was a concert pianist at the age of 5), others develop and learn their art. The driving forces behind Coco Chanel’s great talent were at opposite ends of the scale: the need to escape the impoverished circumstances she was born into and something far more prosaic - finding something to wear that suited her body shape! Thereby lays the key for all who want to be stylish. Understanding your personal body silhouette and proportions unlocks the door to finding the clothing styles and shapes that work for you. (Read that last sentence again because it’s important.) Our genetic make-up has determined whether we have long or short legs, broad or narrow shoulders, a defined waist or a straight torso – there’s little we can do to change any of those physically, but we can create the illusion of being taller/ shorter, slimmer/heavier or curvier by choosing clothing styles that create balance – those which highlight the positive and play down the negative. When we look good, we feel good; when we feel good we’re more confident and project positivity. What’s really interesting is that positive people perform better and those around them also tend to perform better – improving personal, family and business relationships. But wait – there’s more! As if looking great and feeling fantastic about your appearance aren’t already significant benefits, there are others that come with knowing what works for you: Save time: as you become more conversant with the designers, ranges and stores whose clothing is

32

www.BAYFRONTMAGAZINE.COM

the right cut for you, you’ll save time by knowing what doesn’t work and walk past the garments and stores that aren’t for you (yes, it can be done!). Save money: by eliminating costly clothing mistakes. The impulse buy that later gives rise to the “what was I thinking of?” moment will become a thing of the past. Earn more: it’s a fact that people who take pride in their appearance earn more! So, to end where I began, those stylish folk who

always seem to have the right outfit for the right occasion probably don’t have a massive wardrobe of clothes. What they do possess however, is an understanding of what suits their figure, personality and lifestyle, whereby every garment and accessory they buy complements those elements. That’s something everyone can learn and in future issues of Bayfront I will be sharing with you some insider information, hints and tips on how you can develop your own signature style.

ver 10 years ago, this business created carnival and Halloween costumes using recycled materials and fabrics. Victor and Francisco were able to ingeniously create unique and elaborate designs year after year. In fact, they never wore a costume more than once – they have a closet to prove it. The concept of ECO/Green fashion was born from the idea of recycling haute couture pieces. Victor and Francisco’s initial concept was to create “wearable pieces of art” from recycled material, fabrics and vintage garments. Both designers started to see, hear and Fall 2010 BAYFRONT

For the accessories, Victor used roof tins, dry roses, rocks, wire, burlap thread and other materials. The show and collection were a hit! Three of the pieces have become Franovik signature pieces. The yellow, silver screen and white blackout are the most viewed and covered by magazines. Some of their garments will be made for mass production; however they do also enjoy creating a unique garment for that one special person or event. In the very near future, Franovik plans to launch their line of everyday wear which is manufactured from recycled material. It will be comfortable, eco-friendly and fashion forward. In addition, they are in the process of opening a retail boutique and publishing their own magazine Models & Designers, which will premiere during the first quarter of 2011. As for their boutique, they have looked at several locations in South Florida and decided that it should be placed somewhere that is both accessible to everyone and trendy. They want their store to represent glamour and high fashion. The location for the upcoming boutique is in the beautiful city of Aventura, Florida. The shopping experience will definitely be new and built upon certain specifications. Meet The Designers Victor M. Vega

Founder, CEO and Designer

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Victor moved to Puerto Rico during the 1980’s to pursue a degree in Marketing and Public Relations. Academically he thrived in the arena of art and graphic design, which ultimately helped paved his future career. In 1990, he moved to South Florida to work for an engineering firm as a consultant, although this proved to not be his true interest at heart. Victor then gravitated to the field of hospitality at the time. Following this, he ventured in medical marketing and served as Director of International Marketing for Air Ambulance Professionals. This opportunity opened up the doors to international relationships as he traveled the world. Thus far, Victor has worked for several hospital groups including Columbia, HealthSouth, Baptist and HCA. He presently serves as Associate Vice President of Customer and Concierge Services at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital. In addition to this, he is in the process of completing another degree in Business Administration from the Stratford Institute.

When it comes to the Arts, Victor has kept himself active. He has been the recipient of several awards including the Golden Aurora award for the films “The Coffee Shop Robbery” and “It’s About Time”, both created by Christopher De Stefano Productions. His most recent endeavor and passion has been Franovik Designs, a green fashion company that he and his lifelong partner have been working on for years now. Victor is founder, CEO and Illustrator, where he creates the design on paper and also designs the accessories for every garment. “We love to give back to the environment by being eco-friendly, using organic, recyclable and sustainable materials and fabrics”.

accurate depiction of how things occurred. You have to remember that for weeks and weeks of filming, they edit the footage down to a 18-22 minute episode.

6.

On your website www.audrinapatridge.com you have top recommended fashion in certain price ranges for your fans. Where do you find these pieces of clothing?

1.

When you first moved to L.A. did you ever think you would be a star of a reality show on MTV? What were your initial plans?

I moved to LA to pursue a career as an actress. I was working at Quixote Studios, and taking classes. I was meeting a lot of industry people through my job, but breaking into the business still seemed an impossible dream.

2.

When we first saw you, it was the beginning of The Hills; How has your life changed since starring on it?

Well for starters, I’ve grown up! I was 19 when I started filming The Hills, and now I am 25. I think I’m more mature, and more confident. With the success of the show, it’s also a lot harder to go “incognito!” I used to be able to walk around the city, go shopping, have lunch with a girlfriend… all without being recognized. Now, the paparazzi camp out in front of my house and every time I travel, I get stopped by dozens of people in the airport to take photos. I am grateful though - The Hills brought me amazing opportunities.

3.

We love your style. What are your favorite designers you wear? Do you have a favorite store?

I love to shop! I like to mix it up, so I might pair a really high-end leather jacket with an inexpensive t-shirt and my favorite jeans from Bongo. I shop at boutiques like Maxfield’s and Arcade and vintage stores like Decades and The Way We Wore. I also order a lot of things online and I totally hit up the mall in OC with my little sister.

4.

When all the cameras are off and you are alone, what is the one thing you like to do?

I love to get massages! That’s something I’ll definitely indulge in, if I’m having a busy week.

5.

What is it like to have cameras follow you around and have your personal life/emotions aired on national television?

To be honest, it’s not the invasion of privacy that bothers me, it’s the editing! Most of the time, I don’t feel like what is presented on camera is an

My sisters & I have fun surfing the web and finding inspiration. I like to shop online, just like everyone else, so I bookmark items or email them to my web-designer and he’ll put them up on the site.

7.

In regards to your career who would consider to be a role model for you in today’s society and why?

I really love Mila Kunis – she is funny, beautiful and she takes on a variety of roles.

8. 9.

Boys in your life?? Do tell….

My lips are sealed!

What is your situation with Justin Bobby? He seems like someone who will always have a piece of your heart.

Justin was a big part of my life for more than 4 years. He will always mean something to me, but we are in NO way romantically involved and I can say without a doubt that we won’t be rekindling our romance.

10.

12.

What do you carry in your make up bag? I used to have this HUGE purse, and I could never find what I needed in there. I switched to a tiny chain wallet from Chanel, and now the only things I can fit in there are my Blackberry, my lipgloss, cash & credit cards, and maybe my camera. If I’m traveling, or going to be away from home all day I’ll take the following makeup items with me for touchups: Chanel translucent powder, NARS blush/bronzer duo (laguna/ orgasm), MAC lipstick, mac eyeliner (ebony) and my Givenchy eyeshadow.

Where to get it? NARS Blush/Bronze Duo $38.00 Bloomingdales

What’s your favorite vacation spot

I love Cabo San Lucas! When I’m there, it’s the perfect mixture of rest, relaxation and fun! I’m also taking trips to London, and to Tahiti this summer, and I’m really excited about that!

 Chanel Pressed Powder $50.00 Neiman Marcus

11.

What does your workout routine consist of? How many days a week do you work out?

It really depends on my filming schedule – but I work out with a trainer (Jarett del Bene) and he keeps things interesting! Sometimes, I will meet him to work out in the gym, other times he gives me exercises that I can do from anywhere – my hotel, my house etc… I also love to be active outdoors, so if I have a day off I’ll take a hike, or go play volleyball on the beach.

13.

Beauty Secrets?

I drink a TON of water and iced tea! I try to stay away from sugar/sweets. This last year I have made it a point to always wear SPF, because I started to see signs of some sun damage.

19.

Regarding your career, what do you hope to do in the future?

I want to make people laugh! I think it would be fun to do a comedy or romantic comedy film, and I’d love to do more scripted work in general. I am going out on auditions now for TV and film projects. I also want to do something that really challenges me – maybe a dark indie film. Fall 2010 BAYFRONT

Deepwater Horizon On April 20th of this year, some 40 miles off the coast of Louisiana, the Gulf of Mexico became the sight of the largest ever oil spill to originate in U.S.controlled waters. By Elon Meles

Photography: Sean Ocean | Hair/Make up: Ashley Allbee | Model: Chelsi Malloch

t

The BP run oilrig, Deepwater Horizon, was quietly drilling for crude oil, arguably our Nations most invaluable resource, deep beneath the ocean floor when something went terribly wrong. Safety alarms blared at full alert and emergency evacuation procedures began. Lifeboats managed to salvage the lives of hundreds of terrified workers, but 11 men would remain unaccounted for as natural gas fires burned for 36 hours straight. But this scary scene was only the beginning of one of the most devastating disasters of the 21st century. A barrel of crude oil contains roughly 42 gallons. From day one of the spill, as much as 60,000 barrels worth have been released into the once pristine waters off the shores of Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. As of July 30th, over 92 million gallons of this harmful, hazardous waste has been poisoning our water, wildlife and overall well-being. Although the leak has finally been capped, the ecosystem affected could take years, if not decades to recover. Nearly 87,000 square miles of ocean have been contaminated. Eight National Parks and Wildlife Preserves have suffered some kind of adverse effects. Over 8,300 different species of animal will never be the same. 34,000 birds have had their feathers tainted, with more than 3,000 of them losing the battle. Another 600 beautiful creatures of the sea have also lost their lives, with one rare breed of sea turtle coming that much closer to the brink of extinction. Even the smartest mammal known to man has not been

able to avoid the terrible tragedy, with dolphins seen off the coast of Florida blowing oil, instead of oxygen, from their blowholes. While I’m sure the effect of this catastrophe on the helpless animals has already left you shaking your head, let me enlighten you on the cold hard facts on how this has crippled the economy and livelihood of the hard working people of this once peaceful region. It has already been called, “The worst disaster in the history of Florida tourism,” by highly regarded economist at the University of Central Florida, Abraham Pizam. The monetary impact on the west coast of Florida alone has already exceeded $3 billion dollars. Retail and real estate revenues along the coastlines of all of these states has been cut nearly in half, and the once thriving fishing industry, that employed over a quarter of a million people, has suffered so tremendously that economists have dubbed it the Great Gulf Depression. “This is more than an oil spill,” stated a worker for the Center for Disease Control in Louisiana. “This is an ongoing leakage of a highly dangerous chemical doing more damage than can be calculated by human minds.” Crude oil contains hydrocarbon compounds, which when released into the atmosphere can cause dizziness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, chest pains, increased heart rate and in the most severe cases cancerous tumors. In the first 100 days of the tragedy, health care agencies have seen an increased risk of mental disorders and stress related health problems.

Reactions to the spill from various public officials and private sector activists have ranged from blame and outrage at the terrible damage, to calling for greater accountability by the Federal government and BP executives. In a meeting before Congress, this statement was made by a member of the investigating committee, “BP appears to have chosen riskier procedures to save time and money, sometimes against the advice of its staff and contractors. They have operated unsafely and failed to monitor and react to several critical warning signs during the drilling process. Their behavior likely represents gross negligence or willful misconduct.” Why is that BP continues to make upwards of a million dollars per day, and the ones who pay the price are the eleven oil workers who lost their lives, tens of thousands of animals who lost their home and countless Americans who lost their jobs and futures. Someone has to be held accountable. Boycotting the use of BP gasoline and other sponsored products and services may seem like a small gesture, but it is one sure to be appreciated by those affected by this terrible tragedy. Please go to Facebook.com/ BeyondBP to sign the petition. There are also many other ways to join the fight. You can contribute to the United Way Gulf Recovery Fund at liveunited.org/gulfrecovery or donate to the National Wildlife Fund at NWF. org or make an immediate impact by texting “NWF” to 20222 and pledge a $10 donation through your cellular phone bill. Psychic Advice

a

enlighten us when we are ready, ll of us have them. They are always with us, whether we can perceive them or not. They aren’t Angels, they are souls who walk with us who are here to help, offer comfort, guidance, advice and sometimes protect. Just what are these spirits and where do they come from? They are what are known as Spirit Guides and they exist in a dimension that many call the “Other Side”. A Spirit Guide, unlike an Angel, once lived their life, performed their tasks, died, and crossed over to the Other Side. Some make the choice to grow spiritually while helping others still living to learn their life’s lessons. This is a Spirit Guide. As human beings now on another plane of existance, they have a wisdom beyond our knowing, but still retain their sense of humour, their life talents and experiences and their connection to this plane through their love and service to us. Some Guides can bring in their own own special areas of expertise, often based on past personal experiences, talents or careers they have had in their life on Earth and bring that expertise to you when needed. Your Spirit Guide is always there to help you. This is their sole purpose, to offer the living their help and guidance. As “people in spirit” they operate on a higher, faster vibrational frequency than mortals do, so the majority of us cannot see them, cannot hear them, and cannot touch them. You can have more than one Spirit Guide, if something arises that needs special attention or information, a guide with knowledge of that area can come in to help. That gentle nudge or voice in your mind that you may think are random thoughts could be your Guide speaking to you. If you have a decision that needs to be made or you’re at a crossroads in your life, a Guide can give that loving nudge, but can never make the choice for you. That is up to us. A Guide will keep bringing us the information that we need always for our highest good, they’ll

“This is not your normal run of the mill advice column, all of the information that I’ll be imparting will be from your Guides and Angels and not myself. I’m here to help with my gifts in whatever ways you may need.”

however we have to be willing to listen. We are here to experience this life with joy and grow spiritually. Our Guides are here to help us with that and grow along with us....as we grow, so do they. As we accept their blessing, they receive ours.

q. a.

What can I do to better hear my guides?

We all have guides or helpers that work with us and protect us from birth. Guides are different from Angels, in that they have had a life here in the physical and Angels haven’t. They are similar in that they are here to help us on our life journey and watch over us. It’s comforting to know that we are being guided, however when you don’t “hear” them, know that the guidance is still there. Signs are a way for guides and Angels to let us know that they are with us and giving us direction. In your case, I would ask for very specific signs to take place. A special song or piece of music, a favorite image being presented to you in unusual moments, a specific phrase or word repeatedly being said to you, all of these can be signs. Ask for the signs, ask for confirmation on the guidance that you feel you’ve been given and then start to trust the process. You can ask in prayer or meditation or driving down the road, it doesn’t matter where you are. Trusting the process is key in letting the connection to your Guides get stronger. Seeing the signs and recognizing them is the beginning. Open all of your senses, for you won’t always “hear” your guides, you may feel their message or just “know” the message or sign. After recognizing that you are connected by get-

ting validation, you can begin to trust that you receiving your guidance.

q.

In my guided meditation with you, what was the significance of the child with all of the people standing behind? It was as if they were greeting me and welcoming me in. Almost like I was dead and they were welcoming me to the other side. Do I have a long life ahead?

a. I usually don’t answer a question of “How long will I live?”. I normally answer, “That is between you and your God.” I don’t want anyone to get stuck on the number and forget that this moment in living your life is the most important and where you’re supposed to be. The child was you. Healing your self and embracing the child that is you are important. It will give you strength in this moment. The other “people” are guides, helpers, family members, etc…..so many ancestors and lifetimes of yours giving you wisdom and strength to move into who you are, but aren’t living it. You’re a vibrant spirit and you’re constantly stifling your energy to sometimes be invisible. You have steps to take, I almost said decisions. The decision is one, to live joyfully and when you do that, everyone around you will benefit. The steps will be more difficult, ask for help in taking the steps. Put your heart first and live in joy. It’s what you’re supposed to be doing, living in joy. Once this is accomplished, then the floodgates will open and you will be swept away on a rush of joyful living.

What Lies Ahead In Your Future? Candyce Strafford is a nationally and internationally renowned Psychic Medium who, for over twelve years has been reuniting thousands of people from all walks of life with their loved ones who have crossed over to the other side. She is a “seer” of life events and talks to ones Angels and Guides to bring essential information for all life issues. Feel free to submit your question to askcandyce@bayfrontmagazine.com and look for your answer in the next issue of Bayfront Magazine. Fall 2010 BAYFRONT
