The Estate
The Wine
The Restaurant
Created without compromise to stand beside the finest estates in the world, Phantom Creek Estates is the realization of a dream that is destined to set a new standard for winemaking in Canada.
Director of Winemaking Mark Beringer uses both traditional and modern techniques, together with the latest technology to create complex, textural, age-worthy wines. Precision and attention to detail inform every step we take throughout the winemaking process, to ensure that our Bordeaux reds and Alsatian whites speak for themselves.
Every dish that comes out of our kitchen is made with the same philosophy as our wines—to let the ingredients speak for themselves.
Phantom Creek Estates: A modern winery built on a legacy of excellence, producing single-vineyard Bordeaux reds, Alsatian whites and the Okanagan’s benchmark varieties of Viognier and Syrah, all from storied vineyard sites. The history of Okanagan winemaking has been written here. And a new era has begun.
Viticulture. Led by the tireless efforts of our vineyard team, our estate vineyards are conscientiously farmed with precision viticulture. We farm naturally using both Organic and Bio-Dynamic practices under the guidance of Olivier Humbrecht, proprietor of Alsace’s acclaimed Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and France’s first Master of Wine.
Created by Chef Alessa Valdez, our stunning dishes pair perfectly with our wines, and are all made with local and artisanal produce on a menu that follows the seasons. We feature a selection of multi-course menus and seasonal chef’s specials. Your seat also comes with one of the most spectacular views of the South Okanagan and Lake Osoyoos, that can be enjoyed from the Restaurant and the patio. Private dining experiences are available.

publisher’s LETTER
off to a great start!
while we can’t truthfully say “the weather is getting warmer and drier”, we can say that the days are longer, so that must mean summer is here, right? and, although the temperatures haven’t necessarily warmed up much, as the daylight hours have grown longer, vancouver’s events scene certainly has. the diamond rally headed over to vancouver island for the first time, and outdoor concerts, fashion shows, grand openings and presentations have all given this summer season a feel of “the good ol’ days”. as i write, surmesur is putting the final touches on my outfit for ‘the cup’, and dîner en blanc, like many other events, is just around the corner. so, for those of you that have been waiting for a good excuse to venture back into your most stylish wardrobe, you’ll soon be spoilt for choice. to dine for! in this edition, we start a new series of articles introducing new restaurants, helping them showcase their brands and culinary offerings. welcome to ... acquafarina! the glamorous restaurant in the heart of the city stuns with breathtaking interior design and a michelin-star-worthy menu that draws inspiration from across italy. the concept has proved so successful that a second location will open in toronto. as for the next dining establishments you will have to wait to find out! we hope you enjoy the content of this edition and we wish you a wonderful summer...when it finally arrives...

A REIMAGINED BMW R 18 BY RADIKAL CHOPPER Handmade, using noble materials such as brass, aluminium and wood, with a design unlike any other custom: the BMW R 18 Magnifica. Unveiled on June 8 at the exclusive Top Marques show in Monaco (MC), the extreme reinterpretation of the German maxi cruiser, this project commissioned by Officine Riunite Milanesi was entrusted to the genius and art of Andrea Radaelli from Radikal Chopper, a well-known name in the custom bike world. The inspiration for the design of the BMW R 18 Magnifica winks at the
vintage motorbikes of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s and in particular the BMW R 37, objects that “have an incredible charm that even today many modern motorbikes cannot replicate”. Rather than relying on modern technologies such as computeraided design (CAD), a sketch was used and nothing on the R 18 Magnifica is bought. Almost everything that you see on this bike was manually built, except for the wheels. Even the innovative brake discs and callipers were specially created. Tail and seat are one-piece suspension and give the idea of floating in the air. The rear end is mahogany with a polished stainless steel centre section, giving the motorbike a jewel-like appearance. The electrical system has not been modified and everything on the bike is fully functional, and as the dimensions, rims, and tyres have remained true to the original, the bike is perfectly serviceable.

BATTLE OF ISSUS CHESS SET You love chess and have 2 million to spare? In that case, we found an extraordinary board for you. The board itself is made up of pink rhodonite and green malachite squares, framed by sides made of pure silver.
The third installment of the stunning masterpieces has been designed by creative director Alessandro Michele, evoking an “imaginary Grand Tour” through the world of jewellery divided into five themes. www.gucci.com
Each piece comes to life through a mechanical movement. According to the seller, high-end antique dealer M.S. Rau, it took master gemologist Ruven Perelman 14,000 hours to complete. So spoil yourself ... with this US$1.9 million chess set. www.rauantiques.com

BRABUS 900 CRAWLER It may look like a G-Wagen, but this Dune Buggy is built on a bespoke chassis with an entirely carbon-fiber body. At its heart lies a tuned version of AMG’s twin-turbocharged V8 engine, producing 888 hp (900 ps) and a peak torque figure of 922 lb-ft (1,250 Nm). Add a permanent all-wheel-drive system and a nine-speed automatic gearbox, and this 4,553 lbs/ 2,065 kg madness gets you from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. The top speed, however, is limited to 160 km/h, due to the offroad tires. And no, the Crawler isn’t street legal. Brabus will only make a limited edition run of just 15 examples of the Crawler through 2024. Pricing starts at 749,000 Euros. www.brabus.com

23
JASON STATHAM was born on July 26, 1967, in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, to Eileen (Yates), a dancer, and Barry Statham, a street merchant and lounge singer. His family moved to Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, where he initially chose not to follow his father’s career working the local market stalls, instead practising Chinese martial arts and kickboxing with his older brother, Lee. But Jason soon found other athletic passions in football and diving. Statham would start daily diving practices to perfect his techniques, eventually becoming part of the British Olympic Team in Seoul, Korea in 1988, and a member of Britain’s National Swimming Squad for 12 years. He competed for England in the 1990 Commonwealth Games and finished twelfth in the World Championships in 1992. The same year, he was ranked 12th in the world as a platform diver. It was “a great experience,” one that “teaches you discipline, focus, and certainly keeps you out of trouble,” he is quoted from a 2003 interview. However, he finally decided to focus on the next chapter of his career. While training at London’s Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, he was spotted by the agency Sports Promotions specialising in sports modelling and landed a gig in a commercial for Levi’s Jeans, and some work for Tommy Hilfiger’s 1996 collections. Other jobs followed, most notably an ad campaign for the European clothing retailer French Connection. He also made smaller appearances in a few music videos and has reportedly admitted to having supported his income as a con artist, selling fake perfume and jewellery on street corners. It was during his time at French Connection that Statham caught the attention of British filmmaker Guy Ritchie, who was working on a film project and was looking for an actor to play a street-wise con artist. Realizing that Statham had both the physical appearance he envisioned and a history as a con artist, he decided to cast him even though Statham had no acting experience or training. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) was Jason Statham’s first movie and was well-received by both critics and audiences. According to research, he got paid UK £5,000 for the role. Fascinated by how Statham had adapted to the movie world, Richie brought
24

him on again in Snatch (2000), playing a petty criminal who tries to make a name for himself in underground boxing. Cast alongside well-known actors such as Brad Pitt and Benicio del Toro, the movie earned more than $80 million in box-office revenue and Statham saw his salary triple ... to UK £15,000. More importantly - Jason Statham got the attention from Hollywood. He next appeared in the science fiction action horror film Ghosts of Mars (2001) and the science fiction martial arts action film The One (2001), before French director Luc Besson was next to cast Jason Statham. Besson was looking for the main character - a driver-for-hire, willing to deliver anything as long as the price is right - in the action movie The Transporter (2002) in which Statham did nearly all of his own stunts, including car chase sequences, scuba diving sequences and fight sequences. The film was a huge hit and two squeals followed, Transporter 2 (2005) and Transporter 3 (2008), both starring Statham in the lead role. He also played supporting roles in Mean Machine (2002), The Italian Job (2003), and Cellular (2004). In 2005, Statham was once again cast by Guy Ritchie for Revolver, which was a critical and box office failure. The independent film London (2006) then saw him in a more dramatic role, before he went back to the action genre in Crank (2006) and its sequel Crank: High Voltage (2009). In 2008, Jason Statham starred in Death Race, a remake of the 1975 Death Race 2000, as well as in The Bank Job. 2010 should become another turning point in Jason Statham’s career, when he joined action stars Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Mickey Rourke, among others, in the action movie The Expendables. It opened at number one at the box office in the United States, the United Kingdom, China and India, becoming a worldwide success that saw two squeals, The Expendables 2 (2012) and The Expendables 3 (2014). In 2011, Statham played the role of Arthur Bishop in the remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson film, The Mechanic, as well as in its highly commercially successfully 2016 sequel. Jason Statham was now a household-name for action
“I’ve come from nowhere, and I’m not shy to go back.” movies, lauded by the UK’s The Daily Telegraph as “England’s best export to action movies in just about forever, a businesslike brute with gentlemanly soul.” And in 2017, BBC News reported that his film career from 2002 to 2017 generated an estimated US$1.5 billion (£1.1 billion) in ticket-sales, making him one of the movie industry’s most bankable stars. In 2011, Jason Statham began filming Parker, which was released in early 2013. But it was a brief cameo appearance at the end of Fast & Furious 6 (2013) that should ring in his next story of success. The brother of the film’s antagonist Owen Shaw, played by actor Luke Evans, became the role of the main antagonist in Furious 7 (2015) and The Fate of the Furious (2017). 2018 saw Statham as a former Naval captain in the 2018 action-horror film The Meg, which would gross $527.8 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing U.S.-Chinese co-production of all time. Reprising his role as Deckard Shaw in the Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw (2019), he added another highly successful blockbuster to his portfolio that grossed $758 million worldwide. It also showed a significant jump from his first-ever salary in the movie industry. According to IMDb, Statham received US$13,000,000 for Hobbs & Shaw. In 2021, Statham appeared in a cameo in F9. The Expendables 4 is currently in post-production, and both Fast X and Meg 2: The Trench are in production and expected to hit the big screen in 2023. Personal Life Jason Statham is engaged to model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley since 2016. In 2017, they welcomed their first child, son Jack Oscar. Did you know ... that Jason Statham was inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame in 2014?

BENTLEY VANCOUVER
La Dolce Vita!
ACQUAFARINA. FUELLED BY CAVIAR, COGNAC AND CHIC ITALIAN STYLE. Vancouver’s most glamorous restaurant arrived on the scene last summer and the grandeur of the dining room is truly breathtaking, especially in a city where a casual aesthetic reigns supreme and showstopping design is rare. Look up, way up, at the soaring, triple-height ceiling. In its former life, this long, narrow, glass-walled space at the corner of Georgia and Homer streets, was the atrium for the Bank of Montreal. The room still smells like freshly minted money. The tall windows are now draped in golden sheers, the walls lined with exquisite millwork and the front plaza partially enclosed to create a sumptuous, year-round terrace filled with lush greenery, classical statuary and Murano-glass chandeliers. The overall impression is warm, elegant and transporting. Every element of the design -- the wooden Pinocchio free-falling over the entrance (an ode to Tuscany), the red “Ferrari” scissor lift used to scale the upper shelves of a magnificent 8000-bottle wine cellar, the antiques from Milan, the copper bartops, the black-and-white mural of Toto (the famous Italian comedian) wryly staring down the room while chewing on dry spaghetti – was hand-curated by Mr. Foz, a debonair entrepreneur who once raced motorcycles for Ducati. This is Mr. Foz’s 26th hospitality enterprise. Most of them will be unfamiliar to Vancouverites, as they were almost all located in Italy, the Dominican Republic and South
26

America, where he lived for 15 years. But many people will certainly recognize Per Se Social Corner, a tremendously popular and equally striking, albeit more casual, establishment that creatively incorporates three concepts – Rosalinda (Spanish tapas and charcuterie), Flour + Water (a fire-roasted pizzeria) and Ciclo Espresso (a café with its own Italian roast).
AGNELLO AL PISTACCHIO Rack of lamb, Sicilian pistacchio, Moroccan jus
Acquafarina was originally intended to be an upscale pizza restaurant, the first stand-alone expansion of Flour + Water. Then, in the middle of construction, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Realizing that a 200-seat restaurant could not survive with empty office towers surrounding it, Mr. Foz swiftly pivoted to fine dining. In retrospect, he says it was the smartest business decision he has ever made. The plan, already well underway, is to make Acquafarina one of the best restaurants in Canada and open a second location in Toronto. On a Friday evening, the dining room is hopping, as it is almost every night. Lively music gently floats through the air thanks to excellent acoustics and a state-of-the-art sound system that

allows for comfortable conversation. Crystal glasses clink over tables set with crisp, white linen and everyone is dressed to the nines. Acquafarina enforces a strict business-casual dress code to celebrate the European art of fine dining and keep standards high. When it first opened, Acquafarina prohibited the use of cameras and cell phones in the dining room. The policy, now lifted, was partly introduced to emphasize an air of exclusivity, but also because Mr. Foz wasn’t quite sure how the cuisine would evolve and didn’t want to create a false impression. Early menus leaned heavily into the vibrant flavours of Sicily and Naples, where Mr. Foz’s family is from. But a talented new kitchen team now draws inspiration from all across Italy, cooking with modern flair and Michelin-star ambition. May we suggest you begin the night with Beluga Imperial caviar, torched Carabinero prawns or A5 wagyu tataki? Acquafarina carries nothing but the finest luxury ingredients. And the caviar, we are delighted to report, leaves a decadent trail through the entire menu – folded into creamy lime dressing on luscious ahi tuna crudo, ladled lavishly over lobster tail in a smoked beurre blanc linguine and crowned atop irresistibly innovative seafood bombolone. In addition to à la carte, Acquafarina offers a monthly changing tasting menu that brings an exciting approach to Italian cuisine by combining classic techniques with cutting-edge creativity. Imagine Castelmagno risotto elevated by a fermented pear that tastes like exactly like blue cheese, but is still fresh and juicy. It’s wild – and delicious. There is also daily aperitivo with sophisticated snacks, lunch on Thursday and Friday and, coming soon, an outdoor café.

From the moment you step across the threshold to the final course, white-glove service will exceed expectations. Olivier Bureau is the director of operations. A consummate professional who previously managed Tableau, Market at the Shangri-La Hotel and The Bearfoot Bistro in Whistler, he orchestrates the whole show like a virtuoso conductor and has assembled an all-star team that is passionate – and genuinely happy – to be working here. Bar director Barry Jackson, formerly of Gotham Steakhouse, easily runs one of the best cocktail programs in Vancouver. Whatever your pleasure, bartenders David Wolowidnyk (the longtime bar manager at West Restaurant) and
Chris Enns (2018 World Class Canada Bartender of the Year) will mix your libations with chemist-like precision and inventive twists. Under blue skies, when the terrace roof is retracted, it is hard to the resist the sunshiny allure of The Optimist, a floral sour made with fresh orange juice, house-made orgeat and The Botanist Gin. But anytime is the right time for a dram of Louis XIII de Rémy Martin. Acquafarina is the only restaurant in the world with the privilege of possessing three jeroboam decanters. This is the king of cognacs. And tonight, in this majestic restaurant, you will be treated like royalty. MEMBERS ONLY Acquafarina’s most unique feature is a towering wall of paned-glass lockers. The spaces are reserved for invite-only members, who are able to purchase liquor from the bar with a 10 per-cent markup and rare allocations. Annual membership accords certain privileges, including front-of-line reservations and the ability to bring your own wine to the restaurant for a small corkage fee. There are three tiers: the small lockers at ground level; the eye-level Louis Row (which includes a personally engraved 700-ml decanter, two Christophe Pillet crystal glasses and invitations to exclusive Louis XIII events); and the large upper-level boxes, which unlock access to the private dining room on the second storey, via a secret speakeasy-styled staircase.

out & about GRAND OPENING CLUB VERSANTE | VERSANTE HOTEL On Thursday, June 16, 2022, Club Versante in Richmond celebrated its official Grand Opening. The Grand Opening evening took place on three different floors and at four different venues. Guests were welcomed by a golden carpet that led them up an elevator to the 6th floor, 7000 sq. ft. President’s Lounge. A red draped burlesque area welcomed ‘Members Only’ but on the right, hidden behind a dark wall, an indoor and outdoor garden party was hosted for all guests. A massive cherry blossom tree starred in the centre of the room, overlooking a generous charcuterie platter and pointing to an open bar of bottomless summer cocktails. After the welcome ceremony and the ribbon cutting, guests were ushered downstairs to the Club Versante Concierge-level which hosts Cask Whisky Vault and Oo La Cha. The golden carpet was gone and replaced by a flower wall with golden winged models that handed out champagne and hors d’oeuvres. Cask offered shots of Macallan 12, live-carved Iberico ham and the most decadent bitesized quiches. Moet et Chandon flowed endlessly through an ice luge at Oo La Cha. This champagne bottled-ice sculpture also acted as a serving platter for oysters topped with caviar. Groups were then led through the building and across the towers, into Versante Hotel where the final destination took place on the 12th floor. Alaia stunned its guests with its black and white design that seemed to transport its visitors out of Richmond and into a world of its own. Live music filled the room, composed of live saxophone and drum players along with a DJ that played into the night. The most valuable car in the world: The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé sold for an all-time record price!”
Sold!
$142M
It is an icon of automotive history and with just two prototypes built at the time, an absolute rarity. Named after its creator and chief engineer, Rudolf Uhlenhaut, it is considered to be one of the finest examples of automotive engineering and design by automotive experts and enthusiasts worldwide - and now, it is the most valuable car in the world.
A Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé from 1955 has been sold at auction for a record price of 135 million EUR to an unnamed private collector, who agreed with the company that the car will remain accessible for public display on special occasions. “The 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupés are milestones in sports car development and key historical elements that have shaped our brand,” says Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG. “The decision to sell one of these

two unique sports cars was taken with very sound reasoning – to benefit a good cause. The proceeds from the auction will fund a global scholarship programme. With the “Mercedes-Benz Fund” we would like to encourage a new generation to follow in Rudolf Uhlenhaut’s innovative footsteps and develop amazing new technologies, particularly those that support the critical goal of decarbonisation and resource preservation.”
The second original 300 SLR Coupé remains in company ownership and will continue to be displayed at the MercedesBenz Museum in Stuttgart. Before the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé, the record for the most valuable car sold at auction was held by a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, which was auctioned for around $45 million in 2018.

CROWN ROYALE LUXURY IN ITS OWN DIMENSION. THE NEW BMW 7 SERIES BMW calls the new 2023 7 Series sedan a “reinterpretation”. It is the most luxurious and high-tech car BMW has ever made, and, for the first time in its history, the flagship is offered in both a gas-fueled and an-electric version, called the i7. “Leading the luxury segment into a new era”, the seventh-generation 7 Series (G70) almost seems to aim at Rolls-Royce clients rather than its fellow German counterparts. Only available in a long-wheelbase version (compared to its predecessor it grew by 12.9 cm in length, 4.8 cm in width, and 5 cm in height), it clearly does it visually. From the outside, it impresses with a newly interpreted front-end design with a massive and at night illuminated grille, flanked by stacked headlights with Swarovski crystal elements. The side-profile, however, shows a more conventional, aesthetically proportioned classic BMW approach, with door handles now flush with the car’s body, whilst the rear-end is one of the cleanest approaches we have seen in the flagship model, with simple lines and a clean structure. Inside the Cabin The 7 Series and i7 interior stun with a bespoke mix of modern technology and some of the finest materials. From the latest curved widescreen infotainment system for the driver, a minimalist dashboard with hidden air vents, touch-sensitive buttons under crystal-effect panels on the dashboard and doors, to an optional first-in-its-class massive panoramic glass roof with built-in mood-lit panels and the 31-inch 8K display that folds down from the roof and stretches all the way across the back seats, you will feel on top of the world - both as a driver or chauffeured passenger in the back. You can even open and close the four automatic doors with the BMW App on your phone and if you decide to run your next business conference from the backseat, the built-in 5G internet connection will allow for high-quality video calls on the move, all controlled using touchscreen menus or with a
34

dedicated 6-inch touchscreen that’s built into the rear doors. There is also an Executive Lounge package that includes a reclining function with integrated leg rest for the space behind the front passenger seat, plus an optionally quilted and heated armrest with glass insert and integrated smartphone tray for inductive charging. Fancy a movie whilst being chauffeured to your next destination? Just sit back and enjoy: With the pre-installed Amazon Fire TV, you can stream the latest movies to the 31-inch 8K display and enjoy a theatreworthy 4D sound through a Bowers & Wilkins stereo system with up to 36 speakers, 1,965 watts, and in-seat bass drivers. Engines and Performance Depending on the country, the new 7 Series comes with 6 different internal combustion engines (ICE), both gas and diesel, which have all been fitted with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and some form of a hybrid system. At this point, it seems that BMW Canada will launch the new flagship with both the all-electric i7 xDrive60 and the 760i xDrive, using a new 4.4-liter V8 with 536 hp and 549 lb-ft of torque that should propel it to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. Both versions are offered starting at C$147,000, making BMW the only global automaker, luxury or otherwise, to offer a gas and all-electric model for the exact same price. Plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 7 Series are expected to follow in numerous markets from the beginning of 2023. These will include the first BMW M model with a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and plug-in hybrid drive system. Electrified – the i7 BMW recently announced to have an all-electric model in every segment by the end of 2023. The i7 xDrive60, the first-ever all-electric

7 Series in its illustrious 45-year history, shares the same platform as the gasoline-powered and plug-in hybrid models and looks almost identical, with the exception of some blanked-out air intakes and a few flashes of bright blue trim. There are two electric motors – one on each axle, making it all-wheel-drive — that create a combined output of 536 horsepower and 549 lb-ft of torque. It is notable that BMW sources raw materials such as cobalt and lithium, used in the high-voltage battery, from responsible mining and that the electric motors are designed with no rare-earth metals in their rotors. The i7 allows AC charging at a rate of up to 11 kW, while DC power can be taken on board at a rate of up to 195 kW. The full-charge range is estimated to be 498 kilometres based on the EPA test procedures, and according to BMW, the i7 xDrive60 will sprint from zero to 100 km/h in about 4.5 seconds. Not fast enough? Not a problem - BMW has the solution in the already confirmed i7 M70 with 660hp and 1,000Nm of torque, making it the most powerful BMW model ever registered for road use. It should do the 0-100 sprint in comfortably less than 4 seconds. Finally, there is My Modes, an interplay of light, sound and climate optimized to match the driver’s mood. It includes BMW IconicSounds Electric which
lets you experience a driving sound composed by legendary composer and Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer for every drive mode. It’s worth noting the i7 doesn’t qualify for Canada’s Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles Program because it costs more than $55,000/ $65,000. Fully Loaded The BMW i7 xDrive60 and the 760i xDrive come with loads of driver assistance features. All models get standard two-axle adaptive air suspension with auto self-leveling and electronically controlled dampers, all-wheel steer system, and a new adaptive cruise control system that works at up to 130mph. This can accelerate, steer, brake and change lanes for you, and uses GPS data to slow down for corners, junctions and sliproads. Other driver assistance systems include Speed Limit Assist, Lane Departure Warning, City Collision Mitigation, Automated Parking, as well as BMW Live Cockpit Professional with an augmented reality video feed on the screen ahead of the driver. Interested? Brian Jessel BMW will gladly answer all of your questions. The first cars are expected to arrive by the end of the year.

VAYANNE FROM VIENNA WITH LOVE: 2,200 HP 1,475 LB-FT 0-100KM/H: 1.9S TOP SPEED 400KM/H
Deus Automobiles, one of the latest electric startups, has revealed a hypercar with ridiculous horsepower, torque figures and a 99-unit production run planned for 2025. First unveiled at the New York International Auto Show, the DEUS Vayanne’s (day-oos vy-ahn) electric hypercar has been developed with technical support from Italdesign and Williams Advanced Engineering. The company itself calls the car a “production-oriented concept,” and we should mention that their performance numbers, which would make the Vayanne the world’s most powerful production car by a significant margin, are “computer-simulated performance, not validated”. The Vayanne’s front and rear grilles are inspired by an infinity loop,
and the more conventional interior design shows some infinity inspiration with infinity mirrors used for accents on the dash and door panels, creating a look that changes with the viewing angle.
The electric hypercar was also presented at the famed Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May, followed by its European debut during the Top Marques Monaco 2022 in presence of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. No two of the 99 units will be exactly alike as each owner can customize their Vayanne to their individual tastes. First deliveries are expected in 2025, and each Vayanne will be built at Italdesign’s facilities in Turin, Italy. www.deusautomobiles.com

he 2022 Diamond Rally journeyed from Vancouver to Victoria cruising through the Strait of Georgia on Saturday, May 21st. Over 100 luxury and supercar teams got together to raise funds and awareness for Make-A-Wish® Canada and other charities selected by the driver teams. Driving from Richmond to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal to Nanaimo and then through the Cowichan Valley, ending in Victoria.
For the past 9 years, Diamond Rally has been Canada’s most famous charity rally providing a platform for luxury and supercar drivers and navigators to challenge each other to raise funds and awareness for their favourite charity.

In 2019, the Diamond Rally gained worldwide attention. 294 luxury and supercars, the most vehicles to take part in the rally since its inception, gathered on the Pemberton Airport runway to set a new world record! In 2022, the organizers changed the route of the rally by travelling to Vancouver Island. On Saturday, May 21st, and with 100 cars, epic blue skies welcomed the drivers at the official starting-point, TROVE Supercar Condominiums in Richmond. After breakfast, drivers left for the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, where to the delight of the other ferry passengers, the ferry loading area turned into a huge luxury and supercar show presenting exciting photo opportunities to people waiting for their own sailing.
After an enjoyable ferry ride, the drive continued along the highway from Nanaimo to the first stop, the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit, halfway to Victoria. It was a fun afternoon, where drivers ultimately had the chance to hit the track and test the abilities of their rides. By four o’clock, the convoy could again be seen on the Malahat, this time on the way to the destination - Victoria. There, the majestic Fairmont Empress Hotel became the backdrop for a parking lot the likes of which it has never seen before in BC’s capital. Word - and the sound of revving supercar engines - spread, and soon locals and visitors alike strolled through an array of iconic cars, from Lamborghinis to Ferraris, Porsches, McLarens all the way to a stunning Pagani Huayra BC Roadster. Once checked in and freshened up, Lugaro Jewellers, just a
short walking distance from the Fairmont Empress Hotel, welcomed all participants for a cocktail reception, followed by the awards presentation. The day wrapped up at several restaurants throughout Victoria. The next morning, still under the bluest of skies, and after a breakfast reception at the Fairmont Empress Hotel, the cars departed for a scenic drive along the ocean with many photo opportunities. It was the official end of the 2022 Diamond Rally, and drivers either made their way back to Vancouver or stayed for another night, enjoying all that Victoria has to offer. It was an amazing drive and we truly enjoyed being part of it once more. The new route and destination were a much welcome change, and epic blue skies and summer-like temperatures

Yes, you can be the author of your very own book! It doesn’t mean that you will be the next Dan Brown but maybe you’ve always been a writer at heart, and are ready to share your story with the world? It is a fact that writing a book is on many people’s bucket lists and recognized as a life accomplishment. Obviously, you want your book to be phenomenal, polished, and packed with content that readers will truly connect with. But how do you do that? It takes skills, and you may already have issues writing a birthday card for your loved one, and it takes countless hours which you definitely can’t spare. So how can you then write a book? Well, that’s where We Write Stories comes in! Throughout his career in the music and entertainment industry, Aaron Bethune
the founder and CEO of “We Write Stories”, a company that has created a process to write your very own book for you in nine months, without the need to put pen to paper. “I believe that writing a book is not just a lifetime achievement, but a vehicle to pause and reflect,” Aaron says. “The experience of distilling your life experiences into a book can be transformative. Through reflection, you become the observer of your own life story—a new perspective on your life that provides deep insights.” We Write Stories in a way goes back a couple of years with Aaron’s own experience. In 2017 he took a break from his own demanding job and in the process of reflecting on his life, he decided to write down his thoughts. “The whole experience
YOUR LIFE
IN A BOOK

has met many influential people, often shared time with them, heard about their their stories of success and even got their advice based on their own experiences. Inspirational stories, things other people could use in their own life, or simply interesting and captivating tales worthy to get an audience. “If only other people could hear them,” Aaron Bethune thought. “A book would be the perfect medium to do just that.” We recently met with Aaron, who is now
was so transformative. And suddenly I realized that there is more that I can do, that I was looking for something different, a change in my career, my life.” For the best part of two decades, Aaron Bethune had worked with entertainers starting their careers and household name celebrities. “I worked in various capacities; however, no matter my role, I would inevitably spend a large chunk of my time working with my clients on their personal development. I believe if you want to experience growth in your personal life and career, you need to actively participate in the changes you’ll have to go through. When clients put time into themselves, the results in the rest of their careers played out in a big way.” Seeing the results firsthand, Bethune started exploring the idea of creating a coaching company. “I predicted that coaching would become the next yoga. Once upon a time, it wasn’t a mainstream “cool,” and now yoga is everywhere. Many people, including Millennials, are less interested in ownership and
48
ICONIC CONCIERGE
more interested in experiences. Having a coach to help you experience your best life, I believe, will become a familiar monthly expense people will be willing to pay for.” However, Aaron quickly realized that very few coaches offer a product and working on a book with a client could be an excellent vehicle for self-exploration and creating such a product. From this simple idea, We Write Stories was born. “We provide frameworks for people to pause and reflect, and books are our flagship product.” Bethune started by building a team of bestselling writers, coaches, graphic designers, and brand and marketing experts to start working with clients worldwide. “Unlike ghostwriting,” he explains, “we have a team of experts around each author to develop their manuscript through to the finished product. Our process is scalable and allows us to work with multiple authors simultaneously. The book is in the author’s own words, and the author retains 100% ownership of the book.” Authors? “Yes,” Bethune smiles. “We call our clients “authors,” not because they are writers but because they are the author of their life stories. During our time together, they become aware of how they have developed their life’s narrative. And with that knowledge comes the ability to write the rest of the story as they want it to unfold.” The benefits of books are many. A book is a positioning tool; it underscores the fact that you are an expert and an authority on your own life experience. You reach more people with your message. It is a legacy you leave and a way to share your story with others. “Working with We Write Stories, you learn about yourself,” Aaron says, “ and in doing so, you become a better communicator of your personal brand.” To write an engaging book that communicates your life experiences, knowledge, and beliefs requires the ability to be open with your audience. It is a process of reflection on your life and the art of organizing your thoughts. Aaron Bethune and his team guide their clients through that process. They sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and foster an environment to share a client’s story without inhibitions. “Nothing goes to print without the author’s consent,” Aaron points out. “Our authors need to know that their story is safe with us.”

“Waking up to who you are requires letting go of who you imagine yourself to be.” --Alan Watts
The Process We Write Stories starts by exploring an overview of a person’s life at 30,000 feet through a series of interviews. During that process, they create the book outline and start to zoom in on the stories that have emerged in greater detail. Looking more closely at the insights coming from these experiences, the team learns how this understanding has informed critical decisions and actions over time. Then they turn this information into actionable insights, providing value to you and the reader. “We all get caught up in the whirlwind of life and rarely stop to think about how we got here and where we are going. In developing our products, we wanted to find a way that would allow you to pause and reflect, uncover who you are, and get a tangible outcome at the end of the experience. So our first offering became the Transformational Book Experience™. It focuses on non-fiction autobiographical/ memoir-style books written through our process of self-discovery. In nine months, you have your book in your hands.” Working on Transformational Books, they met people who had obtained success but were still searching for happiness. They had the cars, houses, dream partners, lavish lifestyle, and money to spend, but were still searching for joy and had even sacrificed their health over wealth. “Doing the book helped them find satisfaction in
50
ICONIC CONCIERGE
their lives and recognize their path to happiness,” Aaron says. “We wrote a book with an author who, although financially retired, kept pushing himself to keep working. It became apparent it wasn’t out of passion. We uncovered a deep-routed fear of returning to his humble beginnings. This fear was interrupting his enjoyment of the present and dictating his actions, perpetuating his fear into the future. His past was running his present. During our time working on the book, he shared valuable business and life lessons. In reviewing his life, he became aware himself of the patterns that provided the greatest returns and was able to identify his barriers to feeling fulfilled.” We Write Stories’ second product came from finding that there are a lot of experts wanting a book specifically about their expertise without the time to write it. So they created the Expert Book Process™. With a commitment of 10hrs spread over weekly calls, they turn the author’s knowledge into a book in 5 months. “Authors working on Expert Books create a tool to sell their expertise and generate new income streams and gain clarity in their knowledge; some have even found new ways to apply their expertise,” Bethune explains. “One of our authors, Scott, wrote a book on developing mental toughness. He had turned his life and health around at 48 and by his mid 50’s became a machine of a man competing in ultraendurance events with Navy Seals. He would complete the events when guys half his age could not make it through. While writing his book, he made it known that he feared public speaking. He wanted to challenge himself and sign up to get a role in a play. By the end of our process, he had found a way to take his skills to complete ultra-endurance events and apply them to doing auditions. He has since been cast in Netflix shows, a Christmas Hallmark movie, acted on stage as part of a theatre
company and is now a public speaker.” It didn’t take long to recognize that companies benefit from a similar process to understand their brand compass clearly and better communicate their “Why.” So for their third product, We Write Stories created the Brand Book Process™ which combines the major elements of their two initial offerings adapted for businesses. “Patagonia is perhaps one of the best examples of a company that understands its core beliefs,” Aaron Bethune says. “Their story is woven into everything they do. Their story attracts people to work for them, buy from them, and talk positively about their brand. We know Patagonia’s narrative is to make a better planet. That is how they can go from making trucker hats out of recycled fishing nets to making documentaries about saving salmon. And it is no surprise that they directly give financial support to activists. It’s who they are.” We Write Stories use their Brand Book Process™ to help a company go through the necessary steps to gain the same level of clarity on their brand. Having spent the time understanding an author’s story and voice, they provide ongoing content to publish to their various online platforms. “We all have a story and constantly contribute to how our next chapter unfolds. Taking the time to recognize our role in creating the story so far provides incredible potential to impact how we feel and enjoy life now and moving forward,” Aaron Bethune sums up what was the inspiration for We Write Stories. If you are interested in finding out more, We Write Stories have created an exclusive limited-time offer. To redeem it, use the code: ICONIC2022 when signing up. M.A.D.1 RED
For the past 16 years, MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser has been creating other-worldly timekeeping machines - but Max has also been playing with a side project for a while now: creating a more accessible machine, under another label, but always with the crazy MB&F touch. The result: “M.A.D.1”. The M.A.D.1’s fully visible triple-blade, titanium and tungsten rotor winds one of the rare automatic movements with unidirectional winding (essential for an easy, high-speed rotation), the reliable Miyota 821A, flipped upside-down – a nod to MB&F’s HM3 and HM8. Time is displayed laterally thanks to revolving hour and minute cylinders, engraved and boosted with Super-LumiNova. But there is more: Due to a massive response to the watch, a raffle was put in place to get an allocation, making this watch one of the most sought-after and rarest time machines on the market! www.madgallery.net

LM SEQUENTIAL EVO
So typical: Maximilian Büsser never said that MB&F would never make a chronograph. What he did say is that MB&F would never make a chronograph like all the other chronographs out there. Those who spoke the language of MB&F always knew what this meant. All good things come with time; better things come with more time, and after 17 years of creating horological art, MB&F brings us something better. The Legacy Machine Sequential EVO features the debut appearance of MB&F’s 20th movement, in the first chronograph wristwatch of MB&F. The movement incorporates two column-wheel chronographs and a groundbreaking “Twinverter” binary switch, allowing multiple timing modes including split-second and lap timer modes – a combination never seen before in any chronograph. The watch is housed in a zirconium case, water resistant to 80m and protected from shocks by an internal ‘FlexRing’ damping system. Available with either orange CVD or black PVD dial plates. SUMMER STYLE, DONE PROPER Your search for the perfect fitting shirt is over! Soak up the sun in stylish shirts, from button-downs to plaid and stripes, without forgetting summer patterned camp collar shirts. We define the best summer fabric as a combination of comfort, look and sustainability. Here are our perennial recommendations for your summer shirts: LINEN: Linen is both breathable and absorbent. That means you’ll stay cooler longer, and any moisture you produce will swiftly evaporate. That makes linen ideal for summer and working in offices without any air conditioning (we feel your pain). ;) COTTON: The King of summer fabrics. Natural fibres like cotton are best because they allow for maximum breathability and feel better on the skin in the sweltering heat. The majority of your summer pieces will be 100% cotton or cotton blends. BAMBOO: No other plant used in clothing is as well-suited and gentle on Planet Earth. Bamboo is 40% more absorbent than even the finest organic cotton. This means that it brilliantly wicks moisture away from the skin and is extremely comfortable.

KEEPING IT LIGHT & BREEZY To stay breezy in a sports jacket, you need to know your fabrics. Many guys don’t realize every season has its own seasonally appropriate fabrics. Summer weight fabrics will be lighter, with looser weaves allowing heat to escape and keep you cool. The jacket should also be unlined — meaning no full-canvas — a style that cuts unnecessary weight and softens the silhouette for a more casual aesthetic. MURANO COLLEZIONE Sports jackets are an everyday wardrobe staple, especially in breathable summer-ready fabrics. SURMESUR’s sharp array of jackets and blazers crafted with the Cavani Murano range will take the modern man wherever he needs to be. The luxurious blend of wool, linen, and silk offers the fabric the right amount of softness, shine, and freshness. The understated elegance but high-quality performance allows you to go from boardroom to cocktails with ease. With a coordinated selection, dressing in the morning just became a lot quicker and easier.
“When the dress code is business casual, but the forecast predicts blazing heat, the right choice is a well-tailored garment made of summer-weight fabric.

CREATING IMPACT Candid Conversations with Leaders in Life, Business and Philanthropy
Jay is well-known in the Vancouver tech and business community for his infectious spirit and commitment to making the world a better place through business, qualities that beam through like a homing-beacon whenever we interact. He and his talented wife, Nicole, are onto their next business adventure with their new startup, Gunkii-the world’s sexiest tongue scraper… saving relationships one breath at a time! Jay’s entrepreneurial genes run deep, beginning with his grandparents, both of whom were born in India and later moved to East Africa in search of a better life. “My grandfather built a successful machine shop called Elgon,” Jay told me. “ He and his wife had their children, one of whom was my dad, and lived a great life with help in their home and drivers to get them where they needed to go. They were privileged and fortunate. Then, in 1972, Idi Amin came to East Africa and ordered the family to leave the country within 90 days, forcing them and many other Asian minorities to flee for their lives. With the ties to the British Commonwealth, my grandparents moved with my dad and his siblings to England. Due to regional uncertainty, around the same time, my mom’s dad, who was a banker for Barclays in Kenya, asked for a transfer to England. The families didn’t know each other, they just both moved to England from Africa and eventually, my parents met each other in London!” JAYESH PARMAR Co-CEO/Founder, Gunkii.com Former CEO/Co-Founder Picatic.com [Exit/Eventbrite] Investor

It’s finally feeling like summer in Vancouver and when the weather is like it has been recently, the rain we all endure for most of the year feels like a distant memory and a worthwhile trade-off! Perhaps you’ve picked up this edition of Iconic Concierge in an airport lounge to read on a plane to somewhere exciting or maybe in a hotel and you are relaxing by the pool. Wherever you are, I hope you and yours are enjoying the start of the most “normal” summer we’ve had since 2019! For this edition of Creating Impact, I had the fortunate opportunity to sit down for a conversation with a good friend and incredible entrepreneur, Jayesh (Jay) Parmar.
64
ICONIC CONCIERGE
It is an entertaining story and Jay still laughs when he remembers how his parents ended up meeting in London. “When they first met, my dad rolled up in an Austin Mini, and my mom flipped him the bird! How could they not end up dating and marrying and starting their family? The Austin Mini became an instrumental car in their life. A few years ago, I bought my dad a restored, retrofitted mini, which he was thrilled about and drives with pride. It was such a cool experience to give my dad that car, it’s like it had come full circle”. In 1976, Jay’s uncle (his dad’s brother) decided to move to Saskatchewan for an opportunity to open a machine shop, much like his father had done years earlier. Jay’s mom and dad soon followed, and his dad started working with his brother at the machine shop, which was in Swift Current. Shortly thereafter, his parents moved to Saskatoon, bought a house and on January 27th, 1977, Jayesh Parmar was born. “Carrying on the entrepreneurial spirit of his own father,” explained Jay, “my dad started a petroleum construction company, building gas stations and other petroleum
infrastructure. And to pay homage to what my grandfather had built and had to leave behind in East Africa, he named the company Elgon.” Fast-forward to 1983, the year that Jay’s brother was born. “We had a phenomenal childhood,” Jay reflected, ”it couldn’t have been better. My dad built the business and my mom worked as a nurse aide while looking after us kids. It was so interesting growing up as an Indo-Canadian in Saskatoon as our Indo community was predominantly made up of transplanted doctors, professors, dentists and other professionals. In high school, I was the only Indo-Canadian in the entire school and I truly never experienced any racism, it was just a great group of people all around. Humorously,” Jay states, “I believe this was because we had two rules growing up in Saskatchewan: Rule number one, don’t be a douchebag; rule number two, go back to rule number one!” Jay’s entrepreneurial journey started as an elementary student, selling clay he dug up, wrapped in tissue, door-to-door. Leading into high school and through an idea he came up with after joining Junior Achievement, he created a brand called Black Prince (a combination of his favourite racket sport brands) and made embroidered T-shirts which he sold to classmates at his high school. Toward the end of high school, Jay got a job at Below the Belt and ultimately, it was a conversation while working at this job that would lead him to take his entrepreneurship to the next level. “I was working at BTB and my good friend Pavan was working next door at Le Chateau,” shared Jay. “We had graduated and were attending the U of S (University of Saskatchewan), enjoying school and now, at 20, some partying, too. One day, while at work, we started brainstorming about businesses we could create, based on the question, “how can we make money to party?”. It was this conversation in 1997 that led Jay and Pavan to create Boom Music, a company focused on throwing top-notch parties for university students. “At the time, BDC was offering $3,000 student business loans,” Jay explained, “which we used to purchase DJ equipment from local pawn shops. Then, we pitched the U of S campus paper called the Sheaf to write an article on us. They ended up doing a full-page spread on our start-up and it took off from there! We had all kinds
of different colleges starting to hire us to throw parties and over time, this led to us becoming event promoters. We went from making $50 a day selling clothes at the mall to $500 a night hosting these awesome parties to ultimately making $5000 a night putting on our own events. It was so awesome because we were getting paid to HAVE FUN!” In 1998, Pavan decided to pursue his education to become an optometrist and Jay bought him out of Boom Music. A year later, Jay graduated from U of S and decided that he wanted to build a big business. “I graduated with a degree in physical education and became a teacher, working half time at that and half time at Boom Music, doing weddings and corporate events,” Jay looked back. “We had 10 crews going, 20 part-time staff and we were doing really well. We ended up using an online bookings site, which was my first experience using technology and automation. We offered our customers the opportunity to save $50 by booking online and as a result, everything went online!” One of the signature events were Rider Trips, which were pub crawls through small towns on the way to a Saskatchewan Roughriders game. “Roughriders football,” Jay explained, “is like a religion in Saskatchewan, so this quickly became a super popular event. We used an online ticketing platform for these events, and I soon realized it was a clunky, terrible experience so, naturally, I decided that I was going to build my own company for online event ticketing. This was the birth of the company that would become Picatic”. As this was still early days with people using online payment for anything, Jay noted that it was a tough time to get this type of business going. “People thought they were going to be scammed by paying online with a credit card”, shared Jay, “they also had a hard time understanding how an e-ticket would then have to be printed and brought to the event. We had tons of blockers and naysayers, so I chose to use it for our own events only and through that, eventually got it up to $1 million in revenue just in Saskatchewan alone! Fast-forward to
2010 when my brother came on board. I dropped my teaching to two hours a day in the morning and then went home and put on my suit to work the rest of the day at the company. I wanted to optimize my time so much that I ended up buying the commercial space below my loft apartment and made it our office so I could come home, change, and go downstairs to get right to work. It saved me hours every week!” Jay was loving life at this time and speaking of love, on New Year’s Eve 2011, Jay married Nicole, his fiancé whom he had met while they were teaching together. Four days after they were married, they packed up and moved to Silicon Valley. “We had previously met a Silicon Valley group on a Canadian roadshow, and they were impressed with what we were doing. It was important for us to be down there and man, did I get my a** handed to me when we moved there! In the Valley, the language, the signaling, capital raising, structuring, everything was so different. Eventually, a Canadian tech accelerator took us under their wing and we ended up in New York City. We were planning on staying there and then, we found out Nic was pregnant. We decided to move back to Canada, settled in Vancouver and in October 2013, our son Jai was born.” With a newborn at home and everything on the line with his company, Jay asked his Saskatchewan-based team to follow the dream with him, jump in and move to Vancouver. “The team was incredible,” Jay said. ”They made many sacrifices including

From this point, the team was stronger than ever and continued to scale Picatic until 2018 when it was acquired by Eventbrite. Post-exit, Jay wanted to stay onboard with Eventbrite to ensure the team was well-integrated. “When you build a company, you realize the responsibility you have to your team and I wanted to ensure the hand-off was smooth,” Jay explained. “Then, not long after we had integrated the team into Eventbrite, COVID hit and 500 people were furloughed. Our entire Vancouver team was part of that group and so I ensured that using my resources and network, I’d get every one of them new jobs and I was able to do that. Again, I felt that responsibility to them after everything they had done for me over the years.”
selling homes, giving away pets, uprooting their entire lives to make this really happen. It’s something I’m forever grateful for. Having the team together really allowed us to accelerate and shortly after they moved out to Vancouver, we raised our first round which allowed us to scale Picatic. We hustled hard as a team and were on the major grind, scaling, and growing, scaling, and growing.” By 2014, and with the company on a roll, Jay found out that a co-founder had been misappropriating funds, which put on the brink of insolvency. “This was the lowest I’ve ever been in my life,” he shared, “we’ve got a baby at home, we’re scaling the company and now I find out about this. I’ve never been that stressed. I couldn’t sleep or think straight and to save the company, I had to go out and raise $250,000 in seven days. Thankfully, our investors were so supportive, and I raised the funds in six days. They believed in what we were doing and so did the team! They were incredible, willing to work extra hours and not get paid, whatever it took! I truly believe that this was THE defining moment of my life as an entrepreneur.”
It was during the COVID-19 pandemic that Jay decided to just stop doing everything, pause, and reflect on what was truly important in his life. “In our home, we have what we call “Friday movie popcorn night” and I realized that I had missed 90% of these while building Picatic and decided I’m never going to miss any of these again! I also used this time at home to talk to Nic about building a mission-driven company with her. She is incredibly talented and we wanted to use her skill set to grow something great together, that we could also run anywhere from our phones.” Through the outcomes of these conversations, in 2021, Jay and Nicole founded Gunkii, a company that makes ‘the world’s sexiest tongue scraper’. To validate the market, they ran a Kickstarter campaign and raised over $30,000 when they had only set a $10,000 goal. Of course, as with any start-up, they’ve run into their share of speed bumps getting Gunkii off the ground. “We continue to refine the product/market fit and are working to overcome challenges with manufacturing and shipping. Having the start-up experience from the past businesses has been very helpful,” Jay pointed out. “That said, we’re so excited about what we’re doing and the coolest part about Gunkii is that a portion of every sale of a tongue
scraper goes to Project Smile, an organization doing incredible work to support children born with cleft palates and lips. We’ve built this in at the revenue level, not just at the profit level, as we believe it’s important for businesses to have giving woven right into their business model, not just an afterthought once profit has been made.” As we were nearing the end of our time together, I asked Jay to share words of wisdom and advice to our readers, particularly as it pertains to giving back. Knowing him and his purposeful approach to life and business, I wasn’t at all surprised with his response. “Start by reading ‘Creating Shared Value’ from the Harvard Business Review in 2011. It answers the question, how do we create philanthropy through creating profit? It’s not about giving back once you’ve made some money, it’s about interweaving how you make money and who you are as a company!” Jay went on to share that this becomes a business’s competitive advantage and allows them to attract staff, investors and supporters who align with what the company is up to. In closing, he said that, “today, more than ever, consumers are voting with their dollars. When you focus on shared value, you create a better world through creating a better business!”

PREPARE TO LAUNCH IC: In fifteen words or less, who are you and what do you do? RW: Ray Walia, CEO and Founder of Launch.vc. I build and invest in tech companies. IC: Tell us about Launch Academy and what is the guiding purpose behind the organization that you have built over the last 10 years. RW: Launch Academy is our not-for-profit technology accelerator, built for entrepreneurs by entrepreneurs. As entrepreneurs we know how difficult the journey is. We created Launch Academy as a place for entrepreneurs to get out of the garage, out of mom and dad’s basement, and into an environment where they are surrounded by fellow entrepreneurs. In this space, we can provide them with the resources that can help them build their company, in addition to in-person and online access to knowledge and expertise. IC: Your personal focus has been on developing companies in the technology sector. What’s behind your passion for this sector? RW: I think every type of company is now considered a technology company. Tech is critical for acquiring customers, differentiating from competitors, optimizing operations, reducing expenses, and making work more enjoyable for employees. I spend more time in emerging tech sectors, such as spatial computing (VR and AR), blockchain, crypto and NFTs, cybersecurity, robotics and quantum computing, for example. These emerging technologies are shaping the future of humanity and I enjoy having a hands-on approach during this evolution.

IC: Vancouver has started to emerge as one of the leading hubs for technology start-ups in the World. What changes have you seen in the city’s ecosystem over the last ten years that you believe have been key influences in this evolution? RW: The key element is experience. What we are seeing is a 10year, overnight success story. The entrepreneurs and the tech talent behind these successful startups have put in a lot of work, following the build/measure/learn cycles and scaling their businesses internationally. We have also seen a strong influx of Silicon Valley companies and global anchor companies opening offices in Vancouver.
In 2019 over 100 Bay Area companies opened offices in Vancouver, granted some were just 1 or 2 employees working remotely, but the momentum was there and seems to have restarted as we push through recovery from the pandemic. Large offices for Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Salesforce, Samsung, and others just add to the credibility and viability for Vancouver to attract more international corporations and tech talent. IC: On the flip side, living and working in Vancouver presents obvious challenges for first-time entrepreneurs. In your opinion, what more could the city do to give this cohort of pioneers a boost and support their development? RW: From a municipal government perspective I think there are two things that are needed for the entrepreneurs in this city: 1. Ensure the infrastructure needed to support these first-time entrepreneurs is in place. These facilities and resources like Launch Academy can put entrepreneurs in environments surrounded by other entrepreneurs facing the same challenges they are having or have just dealt with, 6 months prior. 2. The other element is international media coverage on the successes and opportunities in the city. We know how great things are here, but we need international media talking about Vancouver as more than just a tourist destination. Corporations and tech talent around the world need to know how deep and successful our tech industry is. Not only does this help deepen our pool of resources, but it helps create business development opportunities for local entrepreneurs. IC: Which other cities that have focused on supporting the tech start-up scene inspire you and what lessons can we learn from these cities to enhance our local entrepreneurs? RW: I think it is more about the entrepreneurs and the collaboration of support players such as accelerators, universities and governments that make for the best environments for entrepreneurs. San Francisco and Silicon Valley are naturally the first ones that come to mind, but the elements there are hard to replicate given the existing density and the funding that flows through there. Denver, Austin and Miami are gaining steam right now. Singapore and Dubai are pushing forward on an international level. These governments have recognized the value of a knowledge-based economy and that their role is to support the entrepreneurs and let them lead the path to change, rather than trying to force the change themselves.
10th Anniversary Launch Team - Past & Present.
IC: We have seen a variety of market challenges provide some significant headwinds for companies globally operating in the cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, Web3 and cloud computing space over recent weeks. From your perspective, are these expected teething problems in embryonic sectors that are still solving problems related to balancing decentralized philosophies with necessary governance measures, or are there more existential threats that we should be aware of? RW: It certainly is a tough time for more than just crypto and Web3, but these sectors are getting a lot more attention and ridicule than others. People quickly forget that the internet was laughed at and pegged as just a place to send emails and access encyclopedias. The same is going on right now with Web3 technologies, but as we move forward, this technology will be instrumental not only for how we interact with each other, but how we govern how society and businesses will operate. Just as people don’t care what type of technology is behind their Uber Eats order, they just care that their tacos arrive before they get cold, people will not care to understand how blockchain and crypto are protecting their data and giving them more control over their data, they will just care that they get paid for the use of their data or they have the ability to cut off companies from their data when and where they want. IC: What subsectors of the field currently excite you the most and show greatest potential for growth over the next 10 years? RW: I think it really is about control and participation in monetization of everyone’s own data. One of my companies, Playwize,
is actively building out this vision with a specific focus on athletes, giving them full control of their financial future and control over their performance and health data throughout their careers. IC: There are concerns that many of the technologies emerging in the blockchain technology and Web3 space are so alien in concept to large cohorts of the population that they risk splintering society into those that are in the know and those that aren’t. How do you propose the sector should seek to educate the masses on how some of the less tangible, more virtual technologies can be integrated into our lives and to a certain extent, why they should care? RW: As I mentioned before, I don’t think people will care to understand how blockchain and crypto are protecting their data and giving them more control over it. However, for us to get to mass adoption, on-boarding people into the Web3 world and everyday use will require smoother and more intuitive user experiences. It is also important to note that Web3 will be transformative and instrumental for some platforms moving forward but not all. It will make total sense in some areas but will not be needed in other areas where the speed of transactions is key, and transparency and security isn’t as important. IC: Which local start-ups should we be keeping an eye out for at the moment and why are you excited by them? RW: The one I would mention is playwize. io. Full transparency I’m a co-founder and investor, but I’m very passionate about what the team is building. There is tremendous
ICONIC CONCIERGE
69
opportunity and need for improving the back office of the business side of the sports industry and supporting athletes in not only controlling their financial future but giving them control over their own data. IC: Over the next five years, what would success for Launch Academy look like to you and your co-founders Alex Chuang and Roger Patterson? RW: Success is measured in the success of the entrepreneurs we work with. But the failures of the entrepreneurs are also a measure of success. Helping entrepreneurs recognize what is and isn’t working is critical. So, the more entrepreneurs that fail, yet come back with a 2nd or 3rd startup, or join other startups is a great achievement for us. IC: What do you enjoy most about your work? RW: Working with fellow entrepreneurs IC: What 4 words would your closest friends use to describe you? RW: Funny, calm, focused, and futuristic IC: Thank you Ray! I have always enjoyed our conversations, and this was no different, in that it gave great insight into an exciting community in Vancouver that is building a strong global reputation. RW: I hope your readers find value from my insights. Thanks for including me this issue. IC: …and finally, here are our ‘Completely Unrelated, but Nevertheless Entertaining Standard 10 Questions’…you ready? RW: Fire away… IC: You lose everything you own. How do you rise like a phoenix from the ashes? RW: Growing up, my family had a lot of ups and downs. I learned that you can’t change the past, and it’s not worth the time to stress out about what you cannot change. It’s not easy, when the lows are really low, but I try to focus on the future and what I can control. Take it a day at a time and just keep looking at making progress. Even microsteps forward each day are beneficial as they add up. IC: We finish this interview and as you step outside, you find a lottery ticket that ends up winning you $20 million. What do you do? RW: I would invest in more startups and help more entrepreneurs that are trying to make our world a better place. IC: You can invite 5 people for a dinner party…and the guest list
isn’t restricted by the confines of time and mortality. Who joins you for dinner and why? RW: Hmm. Do you look back in time and gain insight into some of the world’s oldest mysteries like how the Pyramids were built, or do you convene guests that can take action and help solve some of today’s most pressing problems and shape our future? Opting for the latter, I would invite Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, Elon Musk, Melinda French Gates and Michelle Obama. IC: What was your first car, what do you drive now and what is your dream car? RW: First car was a Nissan Maxima, currently drive a Mercedes CLS, and my dream car would be an all-electric version of the car from the Flintstones. IC: What one piece of advice would you give to your 16-year-old self? RW: Time is the most valuable thing you have in your life, so don’t worry about what others may think, just focus on what makes you happy and what you want to dedicate your time towards. IC: Who would play you in a movie about your life? RW: Danny DeVito…because Danny DeVito. IC: Where is your favourite travel destination and why? RW: I do a lot of travelling for work, so when I do have any personal travel time I prefer a spot with white sand beaches, crystal blue water, and fresh seafood. IC: Tell me your favourite joke… RW: A bear and a rabbit were taking a sh*t in the forest … IYKYK IC: Where is your favourite Vancouver restaurant? RW: Hapa Izakaya IC: Complete the sentence: “Vancouver is a great place to be an entrepreneur because…” RW: “…of the community.” IC: Thank you, Ray, and we look forward to following the latest ventures to come out of the Launch Academy over the coming months.

RIVIERA NAYARIT Do you like the warmth of the sun? A sandy beach, turquoise waters, and the sound of the waves? Year-round? Wouldn’t it be great if you could even make some extra income on top of that? Have we caught your interest? We thought so; let’s keep on reading! In the pandemic, Mexico was one of the few countries who kept its border open, and as a result, jet setters from all over the world became aware of its beauty and all the opportunities in Mexico. Specifically, we are talking about buying real estate in Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit. This area on the Pacific coast of Jalisco has really taken off as the new luxury location. Located just north of Puerto Vallarta, a 300km stretch of shoreline offers breathtaking natural beauty with golden-sand beaches, world-class golf courses, charming beach towns and legendary waves attracting surfers from around the world. It is an area with a sophisticated infrastructure and high economic development. Every year, thousands of Canadians flock to this area to leave the cold and rainy months. They come to recharge their batteries with some much-needed Vitamin D.

Both international and domestic tourists are constantly booking top-of-the-line accommodation there, so it sounds like a good idea to have your property for personal use and as a rental investment. You can have the best of both worlds – your own private retreat just hours away from home, and a solid investment. Tempting, right? But - it’s Mexico. Is it safe to buy property there? And aren’t there certain restrictions? How does the transaction work, and can I get financing? What is the tax situation, how can I rent out my property, and what other pros and cons should I take into consideration? These questions can be daunting, but not if you have the right certified real estate agent. Enter Vancouverite Nik Valcic, who left a career of 25 years in neurosurgical sales at UCSF and Stanford to start a new life in Mexico. He is now an award-winning top agent, not only delivering luxury dream estates to Canadians and Americans, but also showing investors how to own and profit from real estate in Mexico. He also specializes in how to deal with rental income, taxes, laws, banking and more. We discussed some amazing opportunities with Nik on one of his recent visits to Vancouver. Q: Nik, you left quite a career, a wellpaid job, to start all over in Mexico. That must have been a tough decision? A: Like many of my fellow Canadians, I’d spent a fair amount of time in Mexico for various vacations, and during each one I kept learning more about how easy it is to make the move. Yes, I will admit that pulling the trigger was a little nerve-racking, but once I was here, I felt at home, and I have never looked back. Q: So why Puerto Vallarta? A lot of people prefer Cabos San Lucas, its proximity to the US border, and the big resorts. So, what makes PV, in your
opinion, the better choice? A: Cabo is a great location, but it does lack some of the things that PV has to offer. As everyone knows, Cabo is out on the very tip of the Baja peninsula, and as such, your choices for domestic travel are limited. Additionally it’s basically a large desert. Puerto Vallarta has a thriving fine arts community with excellent quality Broadway musical productions, and live music from Jazz to Rock and even Country. High level performers from across Canada and the US flock to the stages of PV every season. From PV you can easily drive to Guadalajara, Mazatlán, or Manzanillo, and you can also visit several amazing smaller towns. Furthermore, there are lake resorts, and guest ranches up in the hills where the temperatures are much lower. The area offers many different natural habitats from the coastal jungle to temperate forests and the desert, all within driving distance. There is even a world-class awardwinning botanical garden. We are seeing buyers and investors shift their focus away from Cancun and Riviera Maya area to Puerto Vallarta. Even current owners of property in that area are looking to relocate to the Riviera Nayarit. The issue of the sargassum seaweed in the Caribbean is a big concern, it has really made many beaches unsuitable and even lowered real estate prices. Crime is high in Cancun, whereas Puerto Vallarta is very safe. Additionally, there is also the issue of hurricanes in the Caribbean. We are also seeing the PVR airport undergoing a major expansion and it will be double in size when complete. Flights to Guadalajara and Mexico City are short in duration, one can fly out in the morning and be back in the evening. More importantly, there has been an increase in direct flights to Canadian cities, such as: Comox, Abbotsford, and, Hamilton, Que-
bec City; so it’s very easy for Canadians to get here. Q: It seems you still visit Vancouver on a regular basis? Is it just to see friends and family, or do you also meet up with prospective clients? A: Both, I’ve started regular informational seminars about owning and investing in Mexico here in Vancouver. There is a lot of interest, but unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation out there as well. I find that one of the more important aspects of my career here is education. If I can help guide my clients through the process of residency, taxes, banking etc. then I feel I’ve done my job. It’s really one of the most rewarding aspects of this career. Q: What are some of the most often asked questions and concerns? A: Well, they fall into three major categories. Let me give you the short version of the answers as well...
Can I own in Mexico, and how do I do it? Yes, it’s legal to own in Mexico as an individual or Canadian LLC, no you do not need to form a Mexican Corp., and no it’s not a lease. How does Mexican residency status affect me as a Canadian? Mexican residency status simply offers you the ability to stay as long as you wish, but there are no required minimum stays. Your residency visa is very easy to obtain it’s based on economic solvency, and you do not need an immigration lawyer to get it done. Can I rent out my property when I’m not there? Yes. The vast majority of condo complexes here do not have any restrictions on rentals. A few have minimum number of rental nights, but none have restrictions on what percentage of the building can ICONIC CONCIERGE

be rentals. There are a plethora of rental management agencies in town, and you can tailor your use of these services to your liking. Some folks like to be hands on and manage all the guest interactions through Airbnb, hire their own cleaners etc., others would prefer to be completely hands-off. Either way, the costs for these services are reasonable. Hiring a cleaner to deliver “hotel level” condo cleaning and turnover between guests for a 2-bedroom condo is about $300 pesos. Q: What type of clients are you seeing and how has Covid changed the landscape? A: Great question, in the past the tradi-
tional buyer here has been a retiree, and certainly Canada is now seeing record numbers of baby boomers retiring. These folks are looking to purchase a place in the sun. Cost of living is a big factor for retirees, and inflation has really taken a bite out of purchasing power. While Mexico is not immune to global inflation, we still enjoy about a 50-65% lower cost of living here. So our traditional buyer is still a major player. However, COVID changed people’s perception about how they view work. Many realized that work can be a part of their adventure rather than an anchor and chain holding them to a particular spot. We started seeing a marked increase in younger people and digital nomads who have started buying here over
the last two years. The Canadian housing market has, and continues to have a high bar for entry and many of my clients realized that it is possible to become first time owners by buying in Mexico. Increasingly folks are realizing that an income generating property is their best hedge against high inflation rates. $230,000 USD will get you a lovely two-bedroom condo here. Someone starting out, working remotely, can easily live here for 6 months, return to Canada for the other 6 and have an income generated from the condo when not here. We’ve seen nice solid equity increases in the past 5 years, showing that your property here in Mexico will increase in value over time. The same is true if you are looking at the other end of the market, homes in the $2m plus USD range are stunning properties with over 10,000 sq. ft. and are priced in the $200-$300 USD/sq. ft. range. The rental demand for these fully staffed mansions is high with nightly rental rates usually well above $5000 USD. What is amazing is that both ends of the market offer great investment opportunities, a home in the tropics, income generation, equity gain and a great hedge against inflation. Q: You have mentioned a new ultra-luxury development in the Punta Mita area, Mandarina. Please tell us more about it. A: Yes, it’s called Mandarina and it’s unlike

WHAT - IF...? THE
SAFEST PLACES IN THE WORLD
Our world is changing, and not in a good way. Only a year ago, in the second year of the COVID-19 crisis, the world was often described as ‘war-like’, requiring the mobilisation and direction of resources at unprecedented levels. The pandemic made us realize how vulnerable we really are and the solidarity between countries pulling together and making sacrifices for the common good to beat the virus that had brought the world to a standstill, was something we haven’t seen since World War II. As virus mutations and disease levels rise, contributed to by climate change, causing virusbearing mosquitoes to hatch in unprecedented numbers in some countries where temperatures and humidity rise, we have realized that we may never return to our previous normal. Fast forward to summer 2022. Covid remains with increasingly novel variants causing cases to rise again, whilst supply chain shortages remain a global headache. However, something else dominates the news. Russia’s invasion of its neighbouring country has seen a level of threat rise, to that bordering of possible World War. Doomsayers have been predicting all-out nuclear war since the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in August 1945. Since then, several countries have acquired nuclear weapons and according to the Federation of American Scientists, there were almost 14,000 nuclear warheads in the world as of early 2022, with Russia and the US owning more than 90% of them. In 2010, Hillary Clinton in her role as US Secretary of State was quoted as saying “We have more than enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world many times over.” Was this a reassurance for ongoing peace, or was it a warning of what may lie ahead of us?
76
ICONIC CONCIERGE
And the raging conflict between Russia and Ukraine is not an isolated one. North and South Korea now appear to be at loggerheads after the North renewed threats of military action against its southern counterpart; there are violent clashes at the Indochina border; the world is waiting for China to invade Taiwan; and Turkey has warned that a conflict in Syria will be the flashpoint for World War III. We haven’t even mentioned Afghanistan and numerous other ongoing armed conflicts all around the world. As tensions erupt around the world, and our experiences over the last two years are testament to the fact that it doesn’t take a lot to bring the world to a standstill, many are wondering where would be safest place to live? Which countries and areas are the least likely to get affected by deadly viruses and potential military tensions? Is the only solution to follow in the footsteps of millionaires and billionaires who are already building bunkers all over the world to keep themselves and their families alive for many years with hydroponic vegetable gardens, enormous water tanks, generators, and wind turbines? It definitely doesn’t sound all that appealing, and considering the Bikini Atoll is still uninhabitable more than 60 years after America’s nuclear tests, it may not be the ultimate solution. So we looked into this, we checked the countries which have been lauded for their approach to the virus, and we looked for the countries that would be the least affected by a war. And since all of the world’s nuclear powers are in the northern hemisphere, and targets are usually countries with lots of resources, the list can
be narrowed down pretty quickly. Yes, we guess that Antarctica would be pretty safe. It definitely offers lots of space to keep a safe distance from your neighbours and with adequate supplies and shelter you could survive for quite a while, but it is also kind of chilly. Countries like Australia, New Zealand and Argentina are temperate with plenty of space to grow food, and since they’re well out of the way you’re unlikely to be targeted. There are always pros and cons, but here are our top places to maximise your chance of survival... Iceland First of all – it is an island. And at 102,775km2 and with just 370,000 people, a fairly small one. The NATO member has been the most peaceful country in the world since 2008, with almost no crime. Icelanders don’t have an army and the police do not carry guns. Not even Iceland’s president has a bodyguard. It also ranks high in democracy and equality indexes, and in 2020, was ranked as the fourth-most developed country in the world by the United Nations’ Human Development Index, and it ranks first on the Global Peace Index. And then there is this: Iceland runs almost completely on renewable energy! Costa Rica Pura vida - that’s what Costa Ricans call their simple, slow-paced lifestyle. Visitors point out the quality of the air, the scent of exotic flowers, and the long stretches of deserted and undeveloped beaches. But there is more: Costa Rica has excellent healthcare, a stable democracy - and its energy grid is 99% powered by wind and solar. No wonder this Central American jewel is at the forefront of eco-tourism and eco-living, having become a premier destination for those seeking a secure home to live an active retirement. Switzerland Did you know that back in 1963, every household was required to build an underground bunker? So, yes, the famously “neutral” country has multiple underground bunkers for its population and hasn’t fought a war in over two centuries. However, its location also could bring it right into a conflict zone, and due to its size, distance is a problem and a virus can spread fairly easy. New Zealand New Zealand is one of the countries the world’s elite has chosen for survival. Several billionaires have decided to buy homes in the country complete with massive underground bunkers. There is little chance of nuclear fallout due to atmospheric circulation,
and as a food exporting country it is not dependent on food imports and would not be susceptible to famine. Other than that, New Zealand’s rates of violence are also very low compared to the rest of the world and it ranks high in the World Index of Healthcare Innovation. The island nation also ranks highest in healthcare quality, with high scores for patient-centered care and infrastructure. Chile A country with a long coastline and friendly people, Chile is one of South America’s most stable and prosperous nations. At the southern-most tip of South America and with relative ease of access to Antarctica, an abundance of fresh water, clean air and the protection by the Andes mountain range, Chile appears to be an ideal location to raging weather or threatening wars. Chile is also the seventh-largest wine producer in the world. Just sayin’... Azore Islands Located hundreds of kilometres from continental Europe, in the North Atlantic Ocean, the autonomous 9 island archipelago of Portugal offers a subtropical climate, surrounded by Gulf Stream-warmed waters. About 40% of the islands’ energy comes from renewable resources, mostly geothermal energy, and thanks to its nutrient-rich water welling up from the deep it attracts a kaleidoscope of ocean species – from whales to barracuda and devil rays to loggerhead turtles and slipper lobsters. Marlin, tuna and shark swirl around the peaks of barely submerged volcanoes and more delicate lifeforms shelter in caves made from lava tubes. Tropical Islands They are far away from other islands and especially the mainlands and there is no threat other than rising sea-levels. There won’t be too many people (well, unless all of us have the same idea, of course), you can fish for your own dinner, and wait out everything on a white sandy beach. May we suggest Fiji, an archipelago of more than 300 islands? It’s famed for rugged landscapes, palmlined beaches and coral reefs with clear lagoons. It is so far away you wouldn’t even notice that there is something going on in the world. And last, but not least - CANADA! The ‘haven’ of North America, our country ranks in the Top 10 of the Global Peace Index. However, with the close proximity to the U.S., chances are that border cities such as Vancouver could be affected by impending disaster. But let’s not forgot Canada is a vast country with many remote areas and untamed wilderness that would remain untouched. See you in the Northwest Territories?

EDITION 10 - MARSEILLE, FR AH... MARSEILLE…the oldest city in France, the home of Bouillabaisse and the place where the Conte of Montecristo got his start. The French national anthem, La Marseilles, was named after soldiers from the city who first sang it. A hub of immigration for hundreds of years, this influx and mix of civilizations makes the city a unique gem. Founded around 600 BC by the Greeks, it has been a trading post since. This influx of people has made the local culture unique and very tolerant. It is the World Water Capital, the City of Soap (Louis XIV set the standards) and the largest port in France. This thriving, edgy city may be off the major tourist path but it has a lot to offer to the adventurous gentleman. Here are a few ideas...
AM PAR ALEXANDRE MAZZIA - A meal at this restaurant is a must. Mazzia just won the American Express One to Watch award but people in the know have been watching him since he opened his restaurant in 2014. Michelin gave him 3 stars 6 years later. With just 22 seats, getting a table is a tough one. Try hard. You will be wowed by every bite of his “cuisine of emotion”. Expect unusual ingredients combined in an imaginative way. www.alexandre-mazzia.com PALAIS LONGCHAMP - Get out of the heat with a visit to the Palais Longchamp. It actually isn’t an actual palace but a monument to water which has always been in short supply in sunny Marseille. People were only allowed 1.3 liters of water a day back in 1834 when the town decided to build a canal to the river Durance. This huge monument and surrounding park were built to celebrate the arrival of the water. The old cages of the once zoo are amazing art in their own right. The annual jazz festival is held here…amazing!

OLD PORT- Stroll the Old Port where you can dock your luxurious megayacht or admire those that belong to others. The heart of the city for 2000 years, this area is filled with pretty much everything - crappy tourist shops, high end retailers, great restaurants, food trucks and spectacular views. NIGHTLIFE - Marseilles lights up at night with a club scene more exciting than most larger cities. Le Moulin hosts international alt rock and punk acts and up and coming stars on its two stages. We love collaborations, especially when two of our favourite companies decide to join forces. Air Canada used the recent reopening of their Signature Suite, which had closed due to COVID-19, to announce an agreement with Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd. to be the exclusive vehicle supplier of the Air Canada Chauffeur Service at Toronto-Pearson. Offered to select Signature Class customers connecting to Asia, Europe and South America, a Concierge will welcome clients and bring them to the waiting car. The fleet of vehicles consists of electric or plug-in hybrid models, including the Porsche Taycan, Panamera and Cayenne, supporting Air Canada’s commitment to reach a goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions throughout its global operations by 2050. “We’re excited to re-launch another key dimension of our Signature Service for international customers, anchored by our industry-leading Air Canada Signature Suite in Toronto’s Pearson Airport.” says Scott O’Leary, Vice President, Loyalty & Product at Air Canada. “Thanks to our partnership with Porsche, customers flying in International Signature Class can now experience their exciting and uncom-

As we continue to restart key international routes, we look forward to welcoming our customers at Toronto Pearson with this one-of-a-kind airport premium experience in Canada, in partnership with one of the world’s most iconic luxury car brands.” With the restart of many international routes in response to pent-up demand following border measures being eased worldwide, Air Canada has welcomed back International Signature Service customers to its exclusive Air Canada Signature Suite and its range of services, such as a menu curated by Chef David Hawksworth and exclusive wines selected by Véronique Rivest. Following the re-opening of the Air Canada Signature Suite at Vancouver International Airport, the Porsche Air Canada Chauffeur Service is planned to be introduced at YVR later in 2022. __ Air Canada is the only North American airline to offer chauffeur services to eligible business class passengers. Other airlines have this service, but it’s usually reserved for top-tier invitation-only clients only.
THE HELICOPTER OF THE FUTURE
British company Hill Helicopters has launched the HX50, a streamlined commuter helicopter of the future. Established with the goal of building ‘the world’s first truly groundup helicopter since the invention of rotorcraft flight,’ the company’s first model can sell for a remarkably low price of appr. US$650,000 (for comparison, Airbus’s entry-level model, the H125, retails at over $3m). The five-seat, light turbine single helicopter is powered by an in-house GT50 turboshaft engine good for 400 hp. This gives the chopper a cruise speed of 260 km/h and a range of up to 1300 km. Design features include an allcomposite, three-blade main rotor, choice of retractable or skid landing gear, and a ducted tail rotor. Hill Helicopters claims that the HX50 will start production in August 2023, with the aim of getting type approval for the UK, North America, and Australia.

How the Airble Aviation App Changes the Game of Flying Private
THE NEW JET-SET Flying is a way of life for Saeed Golzar. Overlooking the runway at the private terminal at YVR from his office, with jumbos coming and going in the distance, framed by our Coastal Mountains, is truly the most epic way of making passion a business. For years, Golzar worked as a pilot, but having passed the entrepreneurial spirit from his family, he always looked for something more, something that could bring the love for air travel to a new level. He focused on the private aviation industry, which was already a booming business before the pandemic. Accessible only to the uber-wealthy, the clientele was limited, so Golzar looked into solutions to break down the barriers around private travel to make it affordable for Canadians. COVID-19 made private flying a necessary luxury for the wealthy but as a result, is now showing signs of becoming a pricey but sought-after alternative to a premium ticket on a commercial flight.

“What if there was an app that allows you to instantly book charter flights instead of calling around for multiple quotes?” Golzar explains his initial idea. “There’s a perception behind flying private – it’s expensive and inaccessible. I wanted to break down those barriers. Cutting out the middleman will save a substantial percentage, and so I started to create a travel marketplace for affordable private flights and tours combined with state-of-the-art technology.“ The benefits of flying private are plenty. You can fly
out at the time that suits you best, not a given schedule by an airline. You will also skip the long lineups at the airport, and time-wasting delays. The list goes and on, and it is always good to know that you support local airlines as well.” After months of research, Saeed Golzar had a final concept and a business plan. Starting with a small team, the first version of ‘Airble’ was ready for a trial launch. “The App is a first of its kind here in Canada, and we knew that we couldn’t afford to present something with glitches. It took time and several updates to get Airble to what it is today, an all-inclusive app that lets the client design and customize travel from the ground up.” The app, which is now available through the App Store and Google Play, has an easy-to-use interface which gives a traveler the freedom of choice, starting from the date and time, type of aircraft, and number of travelers. It has been downloaded more than a thousand times in just a few weeks and putting local Canadian airlines front and center, has received a lot of attention from local markets. But there will be more. “As a forward-thinking company, we strive to improve our technology while listening to the evolving needs of our app users and airlines,” Golzar points out. “We already work with numerous partners, but we are constantly looking for airlines who would like to join. It is a no-brainer for them. They can list their empty legs and shared flights and tours with us. We include them in the app, offering our users even more choice and flexibility, and in the end even help the environment. A win-win.” It is always fascinating to learn about local start-ups, see them grow and establish themselves. Saeed Golzar had a vision, and Airble Aviation is proof that even challenging times offer opportunities. If you would like to find out more about Airble, the app, or if you think that your company could profit from a collaboration, just get in touch with them at airble.com. If you would like to try out the app, you can download it from the Apple App Store and Google Play. ICONIC CONCIERGE

Non-Surgical Anti-Aging Solutions Everywhere you look, there is no shortage of beauty advertisements that promise to give you back your youthful appearance. Whether it’s the latest laser, skincare or beauty secrets the information can be overwhelming. But here’s the real deal. At Vancouver’s top aesthetics clinic, Skin Technique, the results speak for themselves. According to Skin Technique, these are the top three non-surgical anti-aging solutions in the 21st century. Which one would you choose?
1.
Advanced Dermal Fillers to Restore Volume Although Botox is now as popular as any branded name, and most people know that it reduces wrinkles, there can still be confusion around what it does. When you see the results of a major non-surgical transformation, Botox is most likely a part of the procedure to reduce wrinkles, but it’s the dermal fillers that create the real change. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm, restore volume in areas all over the face including the lips, cheeks, and under eyes, and Radiesse is a game changer when contouring a jawline, taking it from sagging jowls and loose skin to a more lifted, softer, and smoother contour. These fillers are so advanced that they can last up to two years! With volume loss and sagging skin being the main cause of looking aged, it’s no wonder dermal fillers work so well at restoring a rejuvenated appearance.

2.
Ultherapy to Lift Sagging Skin Did you know there’s a face lift without surgery? Ultherapy is quickly becoming one of the fastest ways to lift sagging skin without surgery on the face and neck. Treat sagging brows, jowls and rebuild collagen gradually to restore lost volume. The treatment penetrates layers of the skin to rebuild collagen and elasticity (the proteins that keep our skin tight) and your body begins to fully rebuild this over a course of a few months, giving you a more lifted appearance. If there ever was an age reverse solution, that doesn’t require surgery, this is it.
3.
PRP for Facial Rejuvenation and Hair Restoration
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) for facial rejuvenation and hair restoration are two remarkable treatments where your own blood is used. Platelets are the components of our blood that contain multiple growth factors and nutrients. The platelets are extracted and then injected back into problem areas such as the scalp to stimulate new hair growth or injected into the skin during a Microneedling treatment to force the skin to heal faster, treating conditions such as acne, acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles. It’s amazing how we’ve figured out that our own bodies can heal themselves using components we already naturally have in our system! Book your customized consultation at Skin Technique and learn more about which treatments are ideal to help you reach your goals! Seasonal packages are on now.

ARTS & MUSIC VANCOUVER’S ICONIC ART SCENE IN REVIEW Recent weeks have seen a full and welcome resurgence of live performing arts events return to Vancouver’s theatres, clubs and parks. After a hesitant and interrupted spring, with events still seeing a degree of disruption, the mixed sentiments of relief and gratitude exuded by event organisers, promoters and performers alike has been palpable. Vancouver Opera concluded its 2021-2022 season with Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore, which ran from April 30 to May 8 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre under the direction of Brenna Corner, alongside conductor Rosemary Thomson. The original format, which was first performed at Opera Comique in London in May 1978, was adapted by JD Derbyshire and Corner to reflect the current issues of the day. The story is set upon the decks of the anchored British warship, the HMS Pinafore, and tells the tale of love confined by the unwritten rules of the time’s PASSENGER hierarchy of social status. Deckhand Ralph Rackstraw (tenor Ernesto Ramirez), in conversation with Buttercup (mezzo-soprano Megan Latham), the local seller of wares, confesses his love for the captain’s daughter, Josephine (soprano Caitlin Wood), who is supposed to marry Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty (baritone Peter McGillivray). Meanwhile, Captain Corcoran (lyric-baritone Jorell Williams) himself, and Buttercup conceal their love for each other, due to the same societal confines. Thanks to the loose lips of sailor Dick Deadeye (bass-baritone Marcus Nance), accompanied by some revelations from Buttercup, all manner of secrets are revealed and, as you can imagine, it all ends happily ever after. Gilbert and Sullivan’s works have always courted contrasting opinions, due to their desire to veer away from the traditional forms of opera and commit to musical storytelling written more for their time and place. Derbyshire and Corner have taken this philosophy and used their imagination to adapt the production, so renowned for Sullivan’s timeless music, to speak to some of today’s societal issues. Classical opera it was not, but entertaining and humorous it was, nevertheless. SYML, the solo venture of Washington state native, Brian Fennell, welcomed live music back to Kitsilano’s Hollywood Theatre on April 7. The stylishly refurbished former movie theatre was the perfect venue for the singer-songwriter to showcase his latest works on his sold-out Sacred Spaces tour of Europe and North America. Sacred Spaces, was recorded live during the pandemic in St. Mark’s Cathedral and Fennell wanted the venues on this tour to represent some of the more special intimate meeting places that have hosted community gatherings over the years. SYML played a mix of his more recent tracks, including his most ELDER ISLAND

first tour on this side of the pond had been a great success and with Vancouver the last stop before heading home, they were determined to enjoy their set. The crowd picked up on their energy from the outset, with the subsequent couple of hours a buoyant dance fest with the room joining in with their most popular tracks, including Embers, Feral, Kape Fear, and Purely Educational. If this is a sign of things to come, keep an eye out for the next time Elder Island are in town.
recent release, Sweet Home, which captures the essence of his classic folk style, delivered through a very pure sound, with beautiful harmonies and his more recognised songs, including Fear of the Water and Girl. Fennell had the audience positively engaged throughout, before the set concluded with his most celebrated track, Where’s My Love, which received critical acclaim and afforded SYML global recognition after it was featured in the popular TV drama Teen Wolf, in 2018.

The Brighton resident is a wonderful entertainer, and his show at the Vogue Theatre was interspersed with humorous anecdotes, random musings and some more protracted conversations with the crowd, who welcomed him warmly and participated enthusiastically throughout. Whilst Rosenberg credits his breakthrough to the success of Let Her Go, which like SMYL’s Where’s My Love, received global exposure when featured in a TV show, this time during the Season 7 finale of Heartland in 2013, his near annual offerings have been well received ever since and his popular back catalogue is growing. Established tracks including I Hate, Life’s for the Living, Simple Song (and of course, Let Her Go), were as warmly received as more recent offerings such as Sword from the Stone, Tip of My Tongue and Sandstorm. Simply put, Passenger will be welcomed back with open arms the next time he passes through BC. Another act from the south of England, hosted by MRG Live, Elder Island entertained the Vancouver music crowd on June 4, at the Imperial. Following the likes of Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky and Kosheen, Elder Island are the latest in Bristol’s long line of esteemed groups with their roots in house, acid jazz and dance music and are already building a faithful following. The three-piece band released their first full length album in 2019 and had been thwarted in their attempts to tour their tracks in North America for several months by the live music restrictions. IN THE SUMMERTIME... “THE SUMMER READ” There weren’t too many iconic entertainers of the 20th century bigger than Francis Albert Sinatra. His music, his movies, his “rat pack” lifestyle are all as well known today as they were in his heyday. Now comes this intimate look at Sinatra from one of his confidants, Tony Oppedisano. “Tony O”, who met Sinatra in the early 70’s when the singer was in a brief retirement, is an award-winning producer and was part of Sinatra’s management team, and a contributor on two of his platinum albums. In the book, Oppedisano reveals the Sinatra he knew and all facets of his life - and as he was part of Frank’s “autumn years”, there’s plenty of reflecting, as the book says, “deep into the night for nearly 2000 nights.” A great read for Sinatra fans. “SINATRA AND ME: IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS” by Tony Oppedisano & Mary Jane Ross
“THE SUMMER WINE” Christa-Lee McWatters, GM of the recently rebranded Time Family of Wines, recently showcased a few of the company’s best for the summer wine season at the 2022 Vancouver International Wine Festival. Of course topping the list of our favourite “bubbles” is the Evolve Effervescence. This sparkling wine is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc with a pear and apple quality. It is also DOUBLE GOLD medal winner at the 2022 All Canadian Wine Championships (Best Sparkling Wine - Charmat Method). As Christa-Lee pointed out, “It’s like walking through an Okanagan orchard during blossom time.” Also on that favs list, Chronos 2020 Rose, also a DOUBLE GOLD medal winner at the 2022 All Canadian Wine Championships (Best Rosé). This 100% Syrah has a strawberry, white pepper characteristic to it, Christa-Lee explains, a perfect wine for the summer season. www.timewines.ca

“THE SUMMER COCKTAIL” Hydra Estiatorio Mediterranean & Bar in the Exchange Hotel has been the “home base” for filming Our City Tonight the last few months and we have enjoyed showcasing this wonderful Greek seafood restaurant that also has a 40-foot cocktail bar (and a great happy hour). Their list of cocktails is impressive. With the assistance of Claire Wright, Director of Operations for Executive Table Group and her team at Hydra, we chose the Mykonos Margarita, a new contender to the famous Holiday Margarita and the perfect cocktail for the hot summer days. 1.5 oz Patron Silver, 0.5 oz Cointreau, 1 oz lime juice, 0.75 Mediterranean seadust infused sugar syrup, shake & strain into a Maldon salt rimmed glass filled with ice, garnish with a dehydrated lime. www.hydravancouver.com
“THE SUMMER GETAWAY” With international travel back, for the most part, many Canadians are looking overseas for that summer and autumn getaway. We suggest a trip to the Emerald Isle better known as Ireland. Whether you start in the South, or a visit to the North, this island has lots to offer. Start in Dublin and its city centre, which was recently voted one of the coolest neighbourhoods on the planet. Must-sees include a tour through the Guinness Storehouse and Trinity College with its biggest attraction, The Book of Kells. Three hours away from Dublin is the cool, bohemian town of Galway, a place known for events, festivals (our pick, the Oyster festival) and of course great seafood. Another city not far from Dublin is Belfast, officially recognised as a UNESCO City of Music by the United Nations due to its “rich musical heritage”. Though you’ll undoubtedly enjoy many local pints, we recommend a Gin Tour around the city. After that, take a trip further north to Giant’s Causeway, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. You can now enjoy a “whisky on the rocks” when you visit Giant’s Causeway courtesy of The OLD Bushmills Distillery, which is located a few kilometres away. www.tourismireland.com
