here’s to ... 2022

it is hard to believe that another 12 months have passed since we were sharing how much we were looking forward to the end of the pandemic. we made the best of it, enjoyed an ‘almost back to normal’ summer and fall, even managed to travel again...and had to deal with bond’s death. seriously, they killed him. as if the covid crisis wasn’t bad enough. we can’t wait to find out how they will bring him back (we have a theory, though, and it involves his son, james suzuki, but that’s for some other time...). italy – we love you! The last edition’s experience was fun enough, however, events since then have escalated the relationship. Over recent weeks we have been invited to join several events celebrating italian culture, meeting wonderful people and being recognised as ‘italian ambassadors’ for promoting the country and its identitiy in the process. even as far away as the middle east, italian ambassador to qatar, alessandro prunas, and italian michelinstarred chef gianfranco pascucci took pictures with the magazine. i have a feeling that there may be more to come, someday... qatar? yes, indeed. and although the arabian country and its capital have been on our list for a while, it was a spontaneous decision as air canada had just resumed their flights to doha. and what a trip it was! you can read all about it in this edition. plus, as we were just a short 50min flight away from dubai, we stopped in to experience the world expo ... and headed to abu dhabi for a gold latte. we had to. memories... so here we are, at the beginning of 2022, and i guess i could just copy and paste my hopes and wishes from exactly a year ago...

just chillin’ ... After breaking free from its tethers during a massive storm in mid-November 2021, several attempts to remove the stranded barge at Sunset Beach have been unsuccessful. Consequently, the vessel has quickly become a landmark with people lining up to take selfies in front of it - and it was even featured as a backdrop for a marriage proposal. In mid-December, the Vancouver Park Board erected a sign, jokingly naming the spot “Barge Chilling Beach”. “Our little holiday gift to you, Vancouver,” the Park Board wrote on Twitter. “No matter what storms life may send our way, we’ll always be here for you. Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday and a prosperous 2022!” At the time of publishing, the vessel was still grounded.

KEANU CHARLES REEVES, whose first name means “cool breeze over the mountains” in Hawaiian, was born September 2, 1964, in Beirut, Lebanon. His father was born in Hawaii, of British, Portuguese, Native Hawaiian, and Chinese ancestry, and Keanu’s mother, a costume designer and performer, is originally from England. Abandoned by her husband when Keanu was three years old, his mother moved with him and his younger sister to Sydney, Australia and then to New York City, where she married stage and film director Paul Aaron. They moved to Toronto but got divorced just a year later. However, Aaron stayed close to Keanu, who took some interest in acting, offering him help and advice. Reeves and his sister grew up primarily in the Yorkville neighbourhood of Toronto, surrounded by Chinese furniture and art because of his grandmother’s ethnicity, but at the same time getting educated in English manners due to his mother’s heritage. Describing himself as a private kid, Reeves didn’t show a lot of interest in academics but became a successful ice hockey goalkeeper in high school and even considered becoming a professional. However, he dropped out of school at age 17 to pursue an acting career. After a few stage appearances and some smaller roles in made-for-TV movies, he made his first motion picture appearance in ‘Youngblood’ (1986) with Rob Lowe, playing a hockey goalkeeper. Shortly after, Reeves obtained a green card through his American stepfather and moved to Los Angeles, where he attracted some attention with his performance in the drama, ‘River’s Edge’ (1986), and the Oscar-nominated ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ (1988). In 1989, Keanu Reeves portrayed a slacker who travels through time with a friend in ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure’. Well received by critics and earning positive reviews ad approval ratings, this first

popular success was followed by roles in Ron Howard’s comedy, ‘Parenthood’ (1989) and Lawrence Kasdan’s ‘I Love You to Death’ (1990). He also appeared in Paula Abdul’s music video for ‘Rush Rush’ as a ‘Rebel Without a Cause’-like James Dean character. The 1990s saw Reeves transition, taking on more adult roles, starting as a street hustler opposite River Phoenix in ‘My Own Private Idaho’ (1991), Point Break (1991) alongside Patrick Swayze, Lori Petty and Gary Busey, and in Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Dracula’ (1992). Named ‘Most Desirable Male’ at the 1992 MTV Movie Awards, a few drama movies such as ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ (1993) followed, before Keanu Reeves was offered the role that should make him a big-budget action star: The action thriller ‘Speed’ (1994) alongside Sandra Bullock and Dennis Hopper, grossed $350 million from a $30 million budget and won two Academy Awards. The success of ‘Speed’ made Reeves a sought-after actor, alternating between smaller films, such as ‘The Last Time I Committed Suicide’ (1997), and big films like ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ (1997). He passed on the ‘Speed sequel’ (“Ugh - bus not so fast, but then a cruise ship is even slower than a bus. And I was just like, ‘I love you guys, but I just can’t do it’”) but struck box-office gold again in 1999 when he starred in the Wachowski brothers’ critically acclaimed science fiction film ‘The Matrix’. In the early 2000s, Reeves avoided blockbuster movies, continuing to explore and accept roles in a diverse range of genres such as ‘Sweet November’ and the sports comedy ‘Hardball’ (both 2001). He returned to ‘The Matrix’ sequels in 2003 with ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’.

“So in the end, I think we can all pretty well agree that even in the face of tragedy, a stellar person can thrive. No matter what’s going on in your life, you can overcome it! Life is worth living.”

his own directorial debut, the martial arts film ‘Man of Tai Chi’, a year later. However, after a series of commercial failures, it was in 2014 when his career rebounded with the titular role in the action thriller ‘John Wick’. Several movies followed, including ‘Knock Knock’ (2015), ‘Exposed’, The Bad Batch’ and ‘The Whole Truth’ (all 2016), none of which received critical acclaim. In 2017, Reeves reprised his role in the John Wick franchise, ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’, which became more successful than its predecessor, before co-producing and starring in two thrillers in 2018. In 2019, the third John Wick instalment, ‘Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ (2019), was another box office hit and currently, two additional sequels are in the making and will be shot back-to-back. Delayed by the pandemic, ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ opened in late 2021 to mixed critical responses. In 2020, The New York Times ranked Reeves at number four on its list of the 25 Greatest Actors of the 21st Century.

Over the next years, Keanu Reeves would divide his time between mainstream, and indie fare, with noteworthy movies such as the romantic comedy ‘Something’s Gotta Give’ (2003), ‘The Lake House’ (2006) and ‘Street Kings’ (2008). He would also follow the path laid with The Matrix franchise, starring in ‘Constantine’ (2005), ‘A Scanner Darkly’ (2006), and ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ (2008).

Besides his acting career, Reeves also followed his passion for music with his band Dogstar and co-founded Arch Motorcycle Company, which builds and sells custom motorcycles. Keanu Reeves, who has never been married and has no children, supports several charities and causes and, in response to his sister’s battle with leukaemia, founded a private cancer foundation, which aids children’s hospitals and provides cancer research.

In 2012, Reeves co-produced and appeared in the documentary ‘Side by Side’, interviewing filmmakers to the likes of James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, and Christopher Nolan, and starred in

THE UNNAMED SOCIETY GOLDEN BOY REPEATING RIFLE CLOCK This true-to-the-legend reimagination of the iconic Winchester repeating rifle is actually a clock. Using an in-house movement by L’Épée 1839, this uniquely fascinating feat of engineering and artisanship does not just tell time, but “opens our imagination and takes us to where buffalo once roamed and brave men and women struck out into the unknown, building a new world.” The clock gets wound – ‘loaded’ – in exactly the same way as the rifle, mimicking its original loading and cocking mechanism. By actioning the lever 15 times – as if loading 15 bullets one after the other – the mechanism is fully wound for a 7-day power reserve. March of 2021 marked the 50th birthday of one of the most iconic cars of all time - the Lamborghini Countach. It was this yellow Countach LP 500 prototype which was presented to the public in the exhibition space of Carrozzeria Bertone at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. COUNTACH ICONIC CONCIERGE

25

O

Over the years, Lamborghini Automobili has changed hands several times. The iconic Lamborghini Countach was one of the last models created under the ownership of the founder of the company, Ferruccio Lamborghini. The History of Lamborghini Ferruccio Lamborghini, a manufacturer of agricultural and air conditioning equipment, was fascinated with mechanics and loved fast cars. Even before starting his own tractor business he had tuned Fiat cars and had built a Fiat Topolino for himself, entering in the 1948 Mille Miglia competition. Years later, his increasing wealth allowed him to purchase some of the most iconic cars of that era, including a Mercedes-Benz 300SL, a Jaguar E-Type Coupé, and the Maserati 3500 GT. He added his first Ferrari in 1958, a 250 GT, and several more over the next few years. However, he wasn’t happy with the quality and apparently called them ‘repurposed track cars with poorly built interiors’. To his annoyance, he had several issues with the cars, especially with the clutch, and had to bring them in for too many extra services. Finally, he tried to bring his misgivings to Enzo Ferrari’s attention, but the notoriously pride-filled Modenan turned him away. According to Valentino Balboni, Lamborghini’s longtime test driver, Enzo Ferrari told Ferruccio Lamborghini that he is just “a tractor driver and a farmer who shouldn’t complain driving his cars because they’re the best cars in the world”. The legend goes on that Lamborghini replied that “yes, he is a farmer and that he will show Ferrari how to make a sports car.” It was the birth of Automobili Lamborghini. Being the hands-on person he was, Lamborghini dismantled the engine and transmission in his personal Ferrari and found an easy solution for the clutch issue – he replaced it with one from his

tractors. The problem never returned and Ferruccio Lamborghini decided that it was the time for a new endeavour, creating a car that he felt no one could build for him. A Gran Turismo. The best Gran Turismo, with a smooth-running V12. On 30 October 1963, Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini S.p.A. was officially incorporated and showed what would become the first production car, the prototype Lamborghini 350 GTV, at the Turin Motor Show the same month. The 400 GT 2+2 followed, but it was in 1966 that history was made when Lamborghini introduced the Miura, the first-ever supercar, wowing the crowds. The designer – Marcello Gandini. Marcello Gandini Born in Turin in 1938, Marcello Gandini applied for work with Nuccio Bertone, head of the automotive design house Gruppo Bertone. However, it was only after Bertone’s chief designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro, left the company two years later, that Gandini was hired and would create some of the most stunning cars for his new employer. After the Miura, Gandini introduced the concept of scissor doors with the Alfa Romeo 33 Carabo prototype, which already showed other clues of his next project, the successor of the Miura. The Birth of the Countach Little did Marcello Gandini know that one of his designs would become the dream car of every schoolboy in the 1970s. At the 1971 Geneva Motor Show, Automobili Lamborghini introduced a concept defined by razor-sharp angles and sleek lines. It was somehow based on the blueprint Gandini had created for Bertone to win a new client, Lancia. The one-off ‘Zero’ would not only be the starting point for the Lancia Stratos, designed by Gandini, it would also find its lines into Lamborghini’s concept car, the Project LP112.

The concept car, renamed the LP500, became the star of the Motor Show. Three pre-production prototypes were made: After the bright yellow LP500 show car, a red car was shown at the 1973 Geneva Motor Show and then, repainted in green, at the 1973 Paris Motor Show. The car currently resides in the Lamborghini factory museum. Finally, the third prototype was shown at the 1974 Geneva Motor Show and was the first to be constructed entirely in the Lamborghini factory, except for the tubular full spaceframe chassis. It was painted bright yellow and had the finalized production LP400 body style, which was 13 centimetres longer than the previous prototype bodies to increase the interior space. Hello and Goodbye In 1974, the first Countach generation named LP 400 was officially introduced. It was the same year that Ferruccio Lamborghini, plagued by the world financial crisis, sold the company and retired to the country to produce wine. The Countach, envisioned to be powered by the company’s 4.97-litre V12, had gone through several revisions demanded by the 1973 oil crisis, rising fuel prices and new fuel economy laws, and was finally powered by a Bizzarrini-designed 3929cc V12, mounted longitudinally with the 5-speed gearbox and clutch located in front of the engine. It would generate 325 bhp @7,500 rpm and 260 ft.-lbs. @ 5,500 rpm, catapulting it to 100 km/h in less than 6 seconds and reaching a top speed of 291 km/h. The Evolution Through the years, the Countach was continually evolved. The first model, known as “Periscopio” for its unique periscope-style rear-view mirror setup, is the purest from a styling standpoint. Made of aluminum alloy bonded on a

1973 COUNTACH LP400 PROTOTYPE This car currently resides in the Lamborghini museum in Sant’Agata, Bolognese. It is the second prototype and was unveiled at the 1973 Geneva Motor Show, painted in red. Later, it was resprayed green and shown again at the 1973 Paris Motor Show.

lightweight tubular spaceframe chassis, it was in production until 1978 when the LP400S was introduced. And with it came the scoops, vents, fiberglass flares and the optional massive V-shaped rear wing that would become the iconic signature of the later cars. The wing actually originated from the Walter Wolf Countach and although it improved highspeed stability, it reduced the top speed by around 15 km/h. Three distinct LP400 S series models were produced. The first, with only 50 cars made, had the unpadded LP400 steering wheel, different gauges and Campagnolo “Bravo” wheels with protruding hole edges. It also had a lowered suspension ride height. The second series of which 105 were produced, can be identified by their smooth, concave wheels and lowered suspension ride height, whilst the final series saw 82 cars with increased suspension ride height and an increased interior space. In 1982, again under new ownership, Lamborghini introduced the LP500 S (also called the 5000 S) with a bigger, more powerful 4,75cc/ 4.8L engine. The bodywork was unaltered, but the interior was given an update. 321 cars were built. It was also the model that was finally federalized for U.S. sales—a market that would become to be the automaker’s largest. In 1985, the LP5000 Quattrovalvole (four valves per cylinder) received a 5,167cc/ 5.2L engine. The carburettors were moved from the sides to the top of the engine for better cooling, requiring the “hump” on the engine cover, which reduced the already poor rear visibility to almost zero. 610 cars were built, including 66 with a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system.

1978 COUNTACH LP400 S

Happy Anniversary! For the company’s twenty-fifth anniversary in 1988, the 25th Anniversary Countach was introduced. Its modernized restyled body was designed by no other than Horacio Pagani (yes, THE Pagani who would form his very own supercar company some years later). It is said to be the fastest variant of the Countach, accelerating from 0–100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and reaching a top speed of 295 km/h. With its dramatic ducts and airfoils, it was equally loved and hated, and was discontinued in 1990 to make way for the new Diablo, styled again by Marcello Gandini. Noteworthy What’s in a name? The story is that a profiler who worked on the prototype of the then-nameless Countach for the auto show would frequently exclaim ‘Countach’ in his Piedmontese (which is much different from Italian), which is an ion of amazement and admiration. When Marcello Gandini heard him say it, he joked that it is what they should call the car. He mentioned it to Bob Wallace who was in charge of the mechanics and asked him how it sounded to an Anglo-Saxon ear. Well, it seems that it sounded pretty good to him.

Spaceship Interior Initially, Gandini had envisioned an alldigital dashboard, incorporating the newest technologies. However, with not enough time left before the auto show, the decision was made to use analogue gauges mixed with some innovations such as an onboard diagnostic system and an early version of a cruise control. The Periscope As the car’s unique shape restricted visibility, a periscope mirror-system was integrated into the roof, replacing a conventional rear-view mirror. It would give the first 157 models its distinctive nickname, Periscopio. Made in Cape Town A very small number of Countachs were assembled in Cape Town, South Africa during the mid-1970s by local dealer and importer Intermotormakers (IMM), who imported the Countach and other Lamborghini models from the Lamborghini factory as complete kits. Walter Wolf and The Wing A wealthy Austrian-Canadian businessman, Wolf owned his own Formula 1 racing team. He purchased an LP400 in the mid-1970s but disappointed by its pow-

er output, he asked Lamborghini’s chief engineer Gianpaolo Dallara to create a more powerful version. They decided to use a 5.0-liter V-12 engine identical to the LP500 prototype, producing 447hp. Other special styling modifications, including large fender flares (needed for the world’s-first 345-series road tires which Pirelli produced especially for Wolf), a front spoiler and the famous V-shaped rear wing—would foreshadow changes later made to the production Countach. The Wolf-Countach was designated LP500 S, years before Lamborghini used this designation for their production cars. Three Wolf Specials were produced. Safety Car The Countach was used as the official safety car for the 1980-’83 Monaco Grand Prix Formula 1.

Countach Evoluzione A one-off prototype built by Lamborghini in 1987, the Evoluzione was developed by Lamborghini’s engineering team, led by Horacio Pagani to test multiple technologies for the Countach’s successor. It featured a unibody chassis instead of the previous steel tube frame and was continually modified for testing purposes. Both the Countach Anniversary Edition and the Diablo would incorporate some of its engineering, including carbon fibre/Kevlar composite body panels developed by Horacio Pagani, as well as aluminum honeycomb panels. Using new materials and technologies, the Evoluzione had an astonishing weight reduction of approximately 397 kg compared to the LP5000 QV production LP500 Prototype

model. Lamborghini even tested a 4WD system and electronically controlled ride height suspension. Countach LPI 800-4 For the 50th anniversary of the Countach, Lamborghini gave the famous name to a limited-edition hybrid model in 2021. However, most owners of the original car see the LPI 800-4 more as a restyled Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 with some Countach tribute cues rather than a worthy successor. Production figures A total of 1,983 cars were built during the Countach’s sixteen-year lifetime. It is believed that around 1,500 are still in existence. LP500 S (LP5000 S)

Lancia Stratos

Lancia Stratos Zero Concept

THE CREATOR

AN INTERVIEW WITH MARCELLO GANDINI rounded long hood front-engine cars of that era. What was your inspiration in those days, and what was the inspiration for the wedge-shaped Lancia Zero and the LP 112?

Marcello Gandini with the Lamborghini Miura (Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.)

M

MARCELLO GANDINI designed the Lamborghini Miura, Countach, and after he left Bertone in 1980, the Diablo, now running his own design studio. Although best known for his automotive designs, which also include the Lancia Stratos, Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 and the first generation of the BMW 5-series, Marcello Gandini has worked in many other areas, including architecture, interior designs and even the styling of the Heli-Sport CH-7 helicopter. We had the honour to not only discuss this article with Mr Gandini, but to also ask him a few questions... IC: Mr Gandini, thank you for taking the time to work with us on this article. The Countach was the dream car of every schoolboy in the mid-1970s and early 1980s, and we, too, had the infamous poster on our bedroom wall (competing with actress Farrah Fawcett for the better spot).

MG: You have to think about what happened in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I mean, humans went to space and landed on the moon! What an achievement, what a stepping stone in mankind’s history. It changed it all and it was unthinkable for me to design cars more or less similar to the previous ones. There was a spirit of innovation that influenced even unwittingly many fields and also in some cases, the car. IC: I believe the first car ever to feature scissor doors was the 1968 Alfa Romeo Carabo concept car, which you designed as well. What inspired you to create this type of door mechanism? MG: Yes, that is correct, the first car with scissor doors was indeed the Carabo. It was a prototype for a car show, and I wanted to propose something radically new, so I thought of a completely different opening system for the doors. I guess it worked. IC: Many see the clean lines of the ‘Periscopio’ as the purest of all Countachs. What were your thoughts when you saw Walter Wolf’s Countach with the fender flares, extra spoilers and

How does it feel to have designed a car that even today, more than 50 years later, is seen as one of the most iconic shapes in automotive history? MG: I can’t believe that it has been 50 years since I designed it, and I think it makes me feel rather old... But, at the same time also quite young, considering it became such an icon and is considered to have a timeless shape, looking good even when compared to many other more recent sports cars. IC: The LP 112 shows very similar design-cues to the Lancia Zero concept, which you also designed. Both cars have very sharp lines, which is different to many of the more

the massive V-wing? Were you actually involved in designing any of the Countach models after the 1974 production car?

the LP 500 Prototipo would have been my choice, even with added fender flares.

MG: The original Countach as I had designed it was based on an extremely simple line and has remained so even if over time it underwent small changes. A wing on the tail, however, was not part of the overall design. The addition of the protruding wheel arches was needed due to the adoption of wider road tires. However, even though it made the car wider, it didn’t cause too much damage to its shape. The air intakes, on the other hand, are not in line with the simplicity of the overall design.

IC: You don’t have to answer the question, but obviously, we are wondering what you think about Lamborghini bringing back the Countach name, and with it, the LPI 800-4. Don’t be shy ... you are allowed to hurt feelings...

IC: Looking back at 50 years of the Countach with its different models, which one is your favourite, which one is the least favourite - and why? MG: The Countach has withstood the changes that came with the flares and the wider tires very well. However, I wish it would have come without the air intakes as they quite frankly don’t work with the simplicity of the overall design. So, to answer the question,

High in demand - the maestro’s autograph (Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.)

IC: Although this article is about the Countach, we were wondering which of all of the cars that you have designed is your personal favourite?

that I have designed many cars with many new technical innovations and patents concerning the whole production method. Those designs and projects have been purchased by car manufacturers, who in return have drawn inspiration from them but have never actually released them as cars exactly the way I have designed them. There were and are always changes to a designer’s initial concept. So if you ask me which my favourites are, I would have to point to my original designs, they are my favourite projects.

MG: In a way, none of my designs has ever actually been built. You have to understand

IC: Mr Gandini, thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us!

MG: Let me put it this way: In the Piedmontese dialect, Countach means “contagion” and the “new one” has clearly been infected by the original. So from that point of view, mission accomplished. And let’s just leave it at that.

bank or start an elaborate Ponzi scheme, but 30 years later, I walked into the dealership, with a cashfilled briefcase, to buy my first brand-new Lambo, an orange Aventador. Another 10 years passed before I picked up the car you see here, a 1983 white Lamborghini Countach - the same car that was adorned on that poster in my bedroom.

How do you like that car on the cover this edition’s cover? It’s the result of a ridiculous 40-year-old dream of mine… but let’s go back a few years here, to the beginning, when I was about 10 years old. At that point, I must have watched ‘Cannonball Run 2’ for the 100th time and yes, most will remember a very hot Farrah Fawcett in some ridiculously tight plastic suit, but for me, it was all about a car. In fact, it was all about the first five minutes of the movie when, what looked like a spaceship, plays with a couple of cops in their car. That spaceship was a white Lamborghini Countach, and it would become the pin-up poster for many kids worldwide. I was one of them, and I promised myself that one day I would own a white Countach and that my first-ever brand-new car would be a Lamborghini, paid for in cash. Sounds pretty stupid, but for me, at 10-years old, it was a goal. It was about proving to myself that, if I can buy a supercar with cash, I would not have to cheat my dream or find a shortcut to get the Countach. I would have truly earned it. Well, I am pleased to say I didn’t rob a

How did I get the cash? Well, I will spare the boring details, but in a nutshell, I got it by failing. Yes, that’s right, and I failed a lot. Especially in school. My grades were terrible, and so I left school at 15 years old and basically spent the next 8 years of my life going nowhere and forgetting about my dream. I was living in a part of the UK where people were mocked for having big dreams and discouraged from being a dreamer. Success was frowned upon and the typical jealous mindset of the Brits did a great job keeping you in line and holding you back. But one day a series of events transpired that gave me the courage to leave everything behind, attend university and further my education. I was soon back on track to achieving my dream, and getting my Countach. I knew that if I wanted the level of success to allow me to buy what was becoming a very old supercar, I would need my own business. And, so, I began the typical and delightful process of watching my money disappear into one failed attempt after the other as I strived to get somewhere remotely close to getting a company off the ground. Fortunately, thanks to my engineering background and some luck, I invented a technology that had an audience larger than I had expected. At that time, my savings had almost disappeared, but I made the decision to risk it all, and it paid off. Let’s just say when I sold the company, I’d made some extra money in addition to learning something valuable – that I could rep-

licate the process! Soon I found myself starting companies, making them profitable, and selling them. Truth be told, not all of them were successful, but so far the success rate is pretty good. Fast forward to 2020, which I am sure we all agree was such a wonderful year. I particularly enjoyed the part where I moved the same trip to Hawaii back 4 times, giving me plenty of time to work on my online shopping addiction (like everyone else, I guess). And, it was then that I found a white Lamborghini Countach coming up for auction, and luckily, unlike Farrah Fawcett, it had actually aged very well (although to be fair, that’s mostly because Farrah died in 2009). Indeed, the old Lambos were still as stunning as they were in the 1980s, however, they had also appreciated in value quite a bit, especially the mint ones. Regardless, I started bidding on it and eventually won the auction. When the shipping company delivered the car, it was a very emotional moment. I put it in my garage, closed the doors behind me, sat down and just stared at it. There it was, the car that a 10-year-old Robbie had promised himself he would own. 40 years had since passed, my god, how did that happen? And was it all worth it? I will never get that time back, but I can tell you that I feel at peace when I look at the car. I had a dream. I set a goal. And I accomplished something, that truly means a lot to me and makes me proud. So, next time you see me, pat me on the shoulder and tell me “good for you!”, will you? Oh, and just in case you wonder how I like it, well, everything I had read about the Countach is very true. It is indeed a poor built-quality, terrible to drive and expensive to maintain. The new set of tires, the widest ever for a road-legal car, cost me a whopping $10k - yes, there is an expiration date for tires and the 16-year-old ones on my car had “expired”. And god forbid I will ever need a new windshield. But these factors don’t matter to me. What does is that it sits in my garage all these years after I dreamed my dream!

BLACK DIAMOND RALLY The winter version of the popular Diamond Rally, the inaugural Black Diamond Rally enables owners of luxury SUVs, all-wheel sportscars and sedans and winter modified vehicles to enjoy a weekend of driving, fun, socializing and charitable giving. The event started at TROVE in Richmond, where participants gathered for an early-morning breakfast before the cars headed out with Squamish as a pit- and refuelling stop. Team Iconic Concierge piloted one of the few electric cars in the field, a 2022 Porsche Taycan 4S, provided by Porsche Canada and Porsche Centre Vancouver. It was an interesting experience as we had to plan for a trip that would have traffic, highway speeds and winter driving conditions, always keeping an eye on the remaining battery power.

Once the cars arrived at the Whistler Racket Center, the pilots and copilots could join the “Canadian Winter Games”, throwing snowballs and axes, before warming up at a fire with hot chocolate, coffee, or mulled wine. A Winter BBQ and an award and trophy presentation rounded off the afternoon. Dinner and an After Party were optional, and most drivers headed back to the city the next day. It was a lot of fun and brought attention and much-needed funds for Make-A-Wish Canada - and it definitely shortens the wait for the actual supercar rally in the summer: Mark your calendar, the 2022 Diamond Rally is scheduled for May 21st and will, for the first time, leave the Lower Mainland! An emergent financial centre in the Middle East, Qatar has one of the world’s largest reserves of petroleum and natural gas, making it one of the richest countries, per capita, on the planet. However, only 70 years ago, in the mid 20th century, Qatar was actually one of the poorest nations in the Middle East, with most Qataris making their living from pearl and sea-fishing. It is a fascinating story, and, over just the last 20 years, the growth of Doha, the capital on the east coast of the Qatar Peninsula, is stunning. In November 2021, Formula One added the Losail International Circuit on the outskirts of Doha to its racing schedule and in late 2022, the city will host the FIFA World Cup. Reason enough for us to embark on another adventure. Fortunately, getting to Doha was fairly easy, as Air Canada offers several flights per week from Vancouver via Toronto. We travelled in late November and the whole journey to the emirate took us less than 20 hours, arriving at the airport in the late afternoon. Our hotel of choice was the prestigious Marsa Malaz Kempinski, a five-star luxury seaside and spa resort, located on a secluded man-made island within the famous Pearl. It was an easy 30-minute drive along the Corniche, Doha’s seaside boulevard, offering a first glimpse of the city’s stunning architecture. But before introducing you to modern Doha, let’s briefly consider its history and some interesting facts and figures.

From Coast to Coast

Sharing a border with eastern Saudi Arabia and lying northwest of the United Arab Emirates with the island country of Bahrain some 40 km offshore, most of Qatar’s 11,571 km² area is flat, low-lying desert, with Abu al-Bawl Hill its highest point at 103 metres. It has more than 560 km of coastline, and with temperatures reaching up to 50 °C from June to September, spring and fall are the best seasons in which to visit.

From Al Bidda to Doha

Doha was founded in 1825 under the name Al-Bidda, and was designated the capital of the British protectorate in 1916. When the protection treaty ended in 1968, Qatar joined the eight other states then under British protection - today’s United Arab Emirates and Bahrain - to form a ‘Union of Arab Emirates’. By 1971, the nine had not agreed on the terms of union, and Qatar instead became an independent state, with Doha the nation’s capital.

From Pearls to Oil and Gas

Since ancient times, the waters of the Gulf have played a vital role in the daily life of the people of Qatar, who depended on fishing and diving for natural pearls. Prior to the discovery of oil in the 1930s and the start of large-scale exploitation of the region’s reserves in the 1950s, pearl diving was the primary economic activity along the Arabian coast of the Arabian Gulf. Pearls from the Gulf were not only traded to India, Persia and the Ottoman Empire, but also to Europe and North America, where they were used in jewellery and clothing for the emerging middle class. By the second half of the nineteenth century, the pearl trade was the main source of income. However, with the development of the cultured (artificially produced) pearl industry in Japan from 1916 and with the discovery of oil in the 1930s, the trade became unprofitable and the Qataris opted instead to earn their living from other less demanding activities. By the early 1950s, the traditional pearling industry had

all but disappeared from the coastal waters of the Gulf.

From Bedouin Tents to Skyscrapers

Doha’s rise from a small fishing village community in the middle of the 20th century to today’s emerging regional urban centre with more than 1.5 million inhabitants has been meteoric and not surprisingly, the urban evolution is linked to the rapidly increasing oil production. FIFA WORLD CUP

It is hard to believe that only 15 years ago, Lusail, just north of Doha, was nothing more than a desert. By the time the FIFA World Cup arrives, however, visitors will find a $45 billion megacity. Lusail is adorned with many expensive and unique-looking buildings, all centred around its masterpiece, the $605 million Katara Towers skyscraper project, whose two curved towers join together at the base to form a horseshoe shape. Lusail will be the site of both the opening ceremony and the final match of FIFA World Cup, with each event being accommodated at the 80,000 capacity, $4 billion Lusail Iconic Stadium.

FIFA World Cup 2022

The countdown clock is ticking! It actually is, as Hublot started the one-year countdown on November 21st, 2021, unveiling a clock that is part of a striking sculpture, standing 5.75 metres tall on the Doha Corniche Fishing Spot - and we were there! Overall, Qatar is

spending $220 billion to host the 22nd FIFA World Cup 2022 from 21 November to 18 December 2022, which represents the first time the finals have been held in a Muslim country in the Gulf. Usually, the World Cup is held in the summer but because of extreme heat at that time of year in Qatar, it has been moved to a ‘winter’ slot, which will still see average temperatures around 26 degrees Celsius. There will be eight host stadiums, all close together and easy to reach by car or the new public train system. Interestingly, as there are not enough hotel rooms for the expected 1.5 million fans, two cruise ships will serve as floating hotels, whilst tent villages will be built in the desert! In case you are wondering about alcohol: In addition to the hotels already licensed to serve it, fans will be able to enjoy a “cold one” at some venues and fan zones around the city. But be warned - “public drunkenness and drinking alcohol in public places are not permitted.”

Best Time To Travel

The best time to visit Doha is between October and the end of April, when temperatures are at their most comfortable, the humidity is low and the sun is bearable. If you don’t fear the heat, like an empty city and the pool to yourself, try July and August when temperatures can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius - in the shade!

JIWAN RESTAURANT | NATIONAL MUSEUM OF QATAR

Jiwan by Alain Ducasse, located on the fourth floor at the top of the National Museum of Qatar, is named after the Qatari word for the ‘perfect pearl’. The restaurant has interiors designed by renowned architect Koichi Takada, who created a calm, comfortable environment where the desert meets the sea. At the heart of the restaurant and as a tribute to Qatar’s pearl diving legacy, four million Swarovski glass beads are suspended from the ceiling which gently dance with the movement of the air. From the outdoor terrace with its small dining pods, inspired by sand dunes, panoramic views over the aquamarine water of Doha Bay await. The food is simply delicious. Qatari dishes have been reimagined to bring a refreshed, refined, contemporary menu to the table. We can highly recommend their set menu, which regularly changes to offer fresh local produce. www.jiwan.qa

The story of Qatar unfolds across 11 striking galleries, each providing a unique perspective across time, connecting visitors to lives lived between land and sea. The Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum Located a 30-minute drive from Doha, you will find the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum. Housed in a traditional style fort with three connected buildings and established in 1998, it is home to over 15,000 items, presented in several halls across more than 530,000 m². An intensely personal collection, Sheikh Faisal started collecting at the age of just 10 years old, making this museum not only a reflection of his own interests and tastes but a preservation of the cultural heritage of Qatar. The 29 halls include Islamic art, Qatari heritage, handmade carpets, coins and currency, from over four continents.

Posing with the Sheikh’s 1909 Baker Electric Coupe. Hard to believe, but between 1905-1915 there were thousands of these in Europe and the USA, some of them achieving a range of up to 320km.

We were invited to tour another very exciting forthcoming exhibition, which is currently closed to the public but expected to be opened before the World Cup. It consists of more than six hundred vehicles from 1885 onward, including carriages, steam cars, the first electric car and a vast assortment of other vintage vehicles, many of which once belonged to the Qatari royal family. A must-visit when you come to Qatar. www.fbqmuseum.org

WHEN IN DOHA...

OUR ULTIMATE LIST OF MUST-DOs WHEN VISITING DOHA SHOPPING

Doha has some of the most spectacular malls for an unparalleled shopping experience. Our favourite, from a visual perspective, is the new Al Hazm Mall. The architecture is absolutely spectacular, having been designed to look like the 19th-Century Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. Conveniently located in West Bay, City Center Mall with its 250 stores is undoubtedly one of Doha’s most popular spots. If you don’t mind walking, try Doha Festival City with its 500+ stores, or the massive Mall of Qatar, covering 500,000 sq.m. Do you like Italy? Well, in that case, Villaggio is a must-visit because of its indoor canal, complete with gondolas. Should you visit the Katara Village (you should), the iconic French department store Galeries Lafayette is right next to it. Finally, spend some time in Souq Waqif, the famous century-old marketplace selling traditional garments,

spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs, and the adjoining Gold Souq with its large cluster of gold-jewellery vendors.

DINING

Doha has some amazing restaurants, not just for fine dining, but also for authentic experiences. We have introduced Al Mourjan, Jiwan and Nobu, so let us give you a list of our other favourites: The award-winning Asian-fusion restaurant Zengo is situated on the 61st and 62nd floor and offers some amazing views over the city. Delicious food and great cocktails! If you are looking for a quintessential Parisian dining experience, Le Train Bleu at Al Hazm Mall is a fantastic seafood and French cuisine restaurant, and just around the corner, Rosemary Cafe with its countless pink flowers dangling above you and splashes of pink everywhere, even in the food and drinks, is more than just a great spot for selfies. Vertigo, located on the 28th floor, is another great view-restaurant, offering

The only restaurant on the Corniche waterfront promenade, stretching for seven kilometers along the bay, Al Mourjan offers a wide selection of gourmet Arabic food. With an impressive spread of hot and cold appetizers, raw meat dishes and local and Lebanese seafood delicacies, the award-winning restaurant serves dinner in its dinning hall or, highly recommended, right on the water, giving you unparalleled views of the Doha skyline.

Pan-Asian cuisine with a Mediterranean twist.

CULTURE & SIGHTSEEING

The National Museum of History is a ‘must’ - but there are a lot of other places you should visit. Souq Waqif, founded at least a century ago as a gathering place where Bedouins and locals would trade a variety of goods, and the Museum of Islamic Art are highly recommended. Katara Cultural Village with its numerous art galleries, an amphitheatre, museum and convention centre, is an artist’s haven, whilst the stunningly beautiful State Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in Qatar. The Pearl - the man-made island on 4 million sqm of reclaimed land, offers marinas, luxury retail stores and restaurants, and should you feel adventurous, rent a 4x4 and head out to the desert or book a desert safari tour with a camel ride or a thrilling dune bashing experience.

VISIT THE MIDDLE EAST WITH AIR CANADA Even though the pandemic is still in full swing, air travel has picked up significantly. From reconnecting with friends and family, the longoverdue business trips to a vacation getting away from the confines of our homes, people are taking to the skies again. Airports are busy again and after a year of heavy losses, the travel industry is finally showing some signs of bouncing back. We had the chance to meet with Air Canada representatives on numerous occasions throughout the last year, learning about the filtration systems on their planes and their industry-leading Air Canada CleanCare+ program, featuring new biosafety measures for enhanced safety throughout your journey as well as care kits for hand cleaning and hygiene. Over the last few months, Air Canada has added more and more destinations to their program again, including the Middle East. With both Dubai, UAE and Doha, Qatar, accessible directly via their Toronto Gateway, it was an easy decision for us to fly “AC”. Aboard the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, you can choose from three classes of service, including the Air Canada Signature Class with its lie-flat seats, a spacious Premium Economy Class and a comfortable Economy Class. When choosing Air Canada’s Signature Class, travellers will also enjoy several premium personalized services such as the Concierge agents who assist with your check-in at YVR, Montréal-Trudeau (YUL) and Toronto-Pearson (YYZ), priority security clearance, boarding and baggage handling, and a meet-and-greet service when in transit. In our case, they truly helped with getting the Covid-related travel requirements sorted out. From there on, it was ‘easy flying’ ... Finally, the all-new Air Canada app, available for both Apple iOS and Android devices, is extremely helpful these days. Not only does it let you book flights, access your mobile boarding pass, receive notifications about reservation changes, and stream movies, TV shows, music, and more with the Rouge Player. It also offers turn-by-turn in-terminal navigation and access to upgrade lists and information about your travel destination. For more information, please visit www.AirCanada.com

GRAND OPENING On the evening of November 27, 2021, the new Al Hazm Doha Mall, an epitome of luxury and an architectural beauty, transformed into a wonderland for supercar enthusiasts. Designed with 41,000 tons of stone and marble, brought exclusively from Tuscany, Al Hazm is now the home of McLaren Doha - and we were part of the celebration! A breath-taking line-up of supercars had turned the parking lot into automotive heaven, whilst the who-iswho of Doha, including VIPs and key Qatari stakeholders, mixed and mingled around the glass pyramid in front of the entrance, designed after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. The actual celebration took place under the massive glass dome in the Galleria with its soaring ceilings and marble arcade. Executives from McLaren Automotive, the developer of the mall, Al Emadi Enterprises, and Exclusive Motors as the operator of the dealership, welcomed their guests and unveiled the latest models, including the all-new Artura, the 765LT Spider and a one-of-a-kind Elva. A big thank you to McLaren Doha, Mohamed Fawzi, Market Director Middle East & Africa, McLaren Automotive, and Mohamed Al Emadi, CEO, Al Emadi Enterprises, and his son Jassim Al Emadi, CEO, Exclusive Motors & Vice Chairman, Al Emadi Enterprises, for having us. A secluded and private paradise, the five-star hotel welcomes its guests after crossing a bridge, connecting its very own island with the rest of The Pearl. The lobby itself stuns with four Murano chandeliers, assembled by skilled craftsmen over a 6 week period. They have a combined 44,000 pieces of glass and, should numbers impress you, more than 330,000 pieces of Mother of Pearl can be found on the walls of the hotel with another 280,000 pieces in the furniture.

Luxury truly is on a different level at the Marsa Malaz Kempinski, and so all guests have access to Kempinski’s butlers, who can organize everything from unpacking and repacking your luggage to helping you secure a lounger on the resort’s more than 150-metre long private beach. 7 restaurants, considered among some of the best in the city, encompass Spanish, Arabic, Japanese and South American cuisine, whilst four stylish bars and lounges offer some great cocktails and lighter culinary delights. A favourite among guests and visitors, The Secret Garden with its exotic plants on the hotel’s rooftop is the best spot to watch a panoramic sunset before the bar comes alive with pumping vibes around an enclosed lounge. If you are seeking relaxation, wellbeing and recovery from the long flight or a day of exploring Doha and its surroundings, the onsite Spa by Clarins sets the bar high. The 21 treatment rooms spread over 3,000sqm, offer signature face and body treatments as well as tailored spa packages.

DUBAI 2.0 WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT DUBAI (AGAIN...)

“AN EMIRATES EXTRAVAGANZA” described our trip to the United Arab Emirates in late November 2019, visiting Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. It was such an amazing experience, meeting royalty, learning about the culture and exploring many different areas of the country. It was also the last trip before the pandemic hit. Two years later we return. Our travel partner Air Canada services both Doha (Qatar) and Dubai, and with both cities less than an hour apart we quickly decided to book an extra one-way flight to Dubai, extend our trip to the Persian Gulf by a few days and visit the World Expo before flying home from Dubai.

62

ICONIC CONCIERGE

At the time we travelled, we needed a PCR-test to fly to Dubai, a mandatory PCR-test upon arrival at the airport in Dubai, and another PCR-test flying home to Canada (where we got randomly selected for another PCR-test...) but “it is what it is” and both countries were well organized, with testing only taking a few minutes. Dubai. If you didn’t read our story in the Winter 2019/2020 edition, you should ( just scan the QR-code). It will give you a lot of information about the Emirates and Dubai. No doubt, the city is spectacular and with lots to offer, from huge malls to some of the world’s most stunning architecture and from thrilling activities to fine dining, there is nothing you won’t find or can’t do. You think you can’t ski in Dubai?

AIN Dubai is the world’s biggest and tallest observation wheel located on Bluewaters Island, near the Dubai Marina. At 250m it is 82.4m taller than the previous world’s tallest observation wheel, the 167.6m High Roller in Las Vegas. AIN Dubai carries up to 1,750 passengers in its 48 capsules and offers unique views of Dubai’s iconic landmarks during its 38 minute rotation. At night, the observation wheel turns into a captivating light show.

(right) Sky Views Dubai features ledge walks and glass-bottom slides. (below) “LAST EXIT” has 4 locations across Dubai and offers a unique food truck concept. Our favourite is the Mad Max-themed, post-apocalyptic stop filled with monster trucks, war rigs, and abandoned vehicles on the way to Abu Dhabi.

Wrong. You can! And in the two years that have passed since our visit, and inspite of the ongoing pandemic, Dubai has managed to add even more attractions, buildings, and restaurants to add to its already overwhelming opulence. And, then, there is the World Expo! Expo 2020 Dubai - “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future” Postponed due to the Covid-pandemic, Expo 2020 opened on October 1st 2021 and runs until March 31st. Located on a 438-hectare site (1083 acres) between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the fair is organized around a central plaza and divided into three thematic districts: Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability. 192 countries and 10 organisations are participating in this stunning event, decorated with dazzling, over-scaled and often sculpture-like structures. There is so much to see and learn, it really needs a commitment of days to take it all in. Next to architecture, sustainability has clearly been taken to a new level. Almost every national pavilion contains sustainable elements, often showcasing brand-new high- and low-tech ideas or supercharged versions of those with which we are already familiar. The entire fair aims to be sustainable, relying primarily on solar farms and other renewable resources for energy, whilst recycling much of its water. And once Expo has ended, all the buildings are to be converted to commercial spaces, residences, hospitals, clinics and schools. What an experience. Well done, Dubai! Expo is open 7 days a week, from 9am until midnight, and until 2am on Thursday and Friday. Visit www.expo2020dubai.com for more information.

What Is NEW in DUBAI?

A LOT! It’s only been 2 years since our last visit (and there is this little pandemic-thing going on) but it is amazing how much has been achieved in and around the city. Obviously, World Expo with its amazing buildings opened its doors, but there is so much more, from just recently opened new hotel towers, to the obersavtion wheel or Aura, the world’s highest 360-degree infinity pool, offering incredible views of the iconic Dubai skyline. Or how about Sky Views Dubai, featuring daring ledge walks and glass-bottom slides on the 53rd floor of a high-rise? For the automotive enthusiast and coffee afficinado, we can highly recommend DRVN Coffee on Bluewater Island. The stylish twostorey café serves coffee, Napoletana pizza - and rare cars. Should tech-stuff and gadgets be your thing, check out Arena Games where players get dressed with VR goggles and guns, and can roam free on an excursion to defend against zombies or killer robots. Finally, Bla Bla is an exciting new concept with no less than 20 lounges, three restaurants, and one beach club in Jumeirah Beach, near Bluewaters Island. Did we forget something? For sure ...

ULA DXB Hidden between the Oceana Residences and Dukes the Palm hotel, Ula Restaurant and Bar is our favourite new restaurant in Dubai. Situated on the golden sands of Palm Jumeirah, overlooking the glittering waters of the Arabian Gulf, this stunning venue with its chic Mediterranean vibe offers smooth, uplifting beats from live DJs and musicians and is perfect for a lazy lunch, or, as in our case, a dinner followed by a great cocktail. www.uladubai.com

LOVE CONQUERS ALL The local lexicon appears to be pushing the boundaries of branding: Heat Domes, Atmospheric Rivers, Bomb Cyclones and Arctic Blasts, all amidst Greek alphabetinduced rolling restrictions. The Universe has thrown an Infinity Gauntlet of hurt upon our beautiful province in 2021. Yet throughout it all, love has continued to blossom. Tired of pushing back plans, a two-year tidal wave of couples are committed to tying the knot in 2022, along with those whose love actually grew stronger amidst the close confines of quarantines and social bubbles. Celebrations such as these demand decorum. Whether as a Groom or a guest, culture sets the expectation of an appearance in one’s finest livery. A lukewarm approach to one’s own wardrobe places grooms at risk of looking like guests, and the latter like the uninvited. So what should one seek out to avoid this shame?

66

ICONIC CONCIERGE

“New textures and palettes have emerged for grooms: plush Velvets, golden Jacquards, and Ivory dinner jackets are displacing the mighty Midnight Blue tuxedo the same way it once became the new Black. Forest Green, Burgundy and Chestnut now dominate outdoor inspirations while heathered wovens bring the old country to our coast.”, muses Surmesur Yaletown’s Chief Clothier William Chen. “Each carefully curated detail should be a projection of the core values and collective vision each couple has forged together. For instance, Mother of Pearl buttons amplify ambition while marbled horn buttons evoke endurance. Creaseless Mohair signifies solidarity while Grosgrain hints at adventure. Gauntlet cuffs, leatherstrapped braces, and sweeping peak lapels announce a man’s readiness to do battle for his beloved…”, Mr. Chen pauses, “...no matter what the Universe may throw at them.”

EDITION 8 - MADRID, ES AH... MADRID…where the sun shines 300 days a year, where locals are called Gatos (cats) because they stay out late (or maybe because of an ancient soldier who climbed the city walls) and where you can find the only statue dedicated to Lucifer. Night clubs open at midnight, siestas still happen in afternoons and there are more bars per capita than in any city in Europe. The fountain of Cybele, where football victories are celebrated, is designed to flood the chamber of gold at the Bank of Spain if anyone breaks in. The artist, Goya waitered here as he waited to get into art school, the fire is never extinguished, and Hemingway wrote about it in ‘The Sun Also Rises’. He called Madrid the ‘Capital of the World’. While bullfighting has lost its sheen, there is so much to entertain the modern Hemingway inspired gentleman.

ITALIAN DESIGN WEEK OPENING EVENT BRIAN JESSEL BMW

photography: Alfonso Arnold

Over the last two years, the Brian Jessel BMW dealership has established itself as a venue for some of the most exciting presentations and events in Vancouver. A few eyebrows were raised, though, when it was announced that the opening event of the Italian Design Week, a series of cocktail reception events taking place at local Showrooms in Vancouver, would be held in the Bavarian manufacturer’s showroom. However, as Jim Murray, Managing Partner at Brian Jessel BMW, and Fabio Messineo, Consul General of Italy, pointed out, there are many strong connections between both countries. The third edition of the “Italian Design Week”, organized by the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada-West, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver, took place from October 26 to November 2 and promoted the excellence of made in Italy design, highlighting craftsmanship, superior quality, innovative, cutting edge technological solutions and global trendsetting style.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO

WHAT’S NEXT IN THE ELECTRIC WORLD VIVA LAS VEGAS!

Though Covid-19 cancellations ended up making many of the EV debuts at CES virtual announcements, we still wanted to show you some of the most interesting concepts, many of which seem quite close to drivable reality with a few of them actually hitting the showrooms next year. Here are some of the highlights in no particular order ...

THE HYPERFIGHTER

Vancouver’s Damon Motors officially unveiled their newest motorcycle: Built upon the company’s HyperDrive technology, the HyperFighter is a raw, muscular-silhouetted, electrifying streetfighter for a new generation of urban riders. “The HyperFighter is a stripped-down demon of a bike that is not for the faint of heart,” says Jay Giraud, co-founder & CEO, “and we’re excited to give the naked sports bike fanatic everything they want.” Pictured is the ‘Colossus’. Priced at US$35,000, it features a special bodykit and wheels, along with a 20 kWh battery with 200 hp and 148 ft-lbs of torque. 0-100 km/h is said to be 3s, the top speed is 274 km/h. It can cover up to 235 miles on a single charge, according to Damon. www.damon.com

THE PORSCHE VISION GRAN TURISMO

Sorry, folks... Not only is this cool looking Porsche a concept, but it is not even real and has only been created for a game. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s ‘Gran Turismo’ game series has featured Porsche sports cars since 2017, and for the launch of the game’s seventh edition, Porsche has, for the first time, developed a vehicle purely for the virtual world. Freed from the constraints of developing models for series production, Porsche’s designers were able to put their own ideas for a Gran Turismo concept car into practice. If you want to ‘drive’ it - Gran Turismo 7 will be released on March 4th for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

THE MCMURTRY SPÉIRLING

Agreed - it really looks a bit like a Batmobile for kids, but what British firm McMurty Automotive debuted at the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed is actually a radical single-seater electric track car. Combining massive downforce with minimal drag and curb weight, the Spéirling has a 60-kwh battery pack that will provide 30-60 minutes of track driving per charge, equivalent to a 350-mile range on the European WLTP testing cycle, according to McMurtry. According to a press release, the Spéirling will do 0-300 km/h in less than 9.0 seconds (that is faster than the Rimac Nevera or the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 12.1), with a top speed of more than 320 km/h. The plan seems to be to create a one-make competition series. www.mcmurtry.com

THE EVIATION ALICE

“The world’s first all-electric commuter aircraft.” Israel-based startup company Eviation Aircraft says that its Alice prototype does not require any fuel for its operation, uses 95% composite materials and can carry two crew and up to nine passengers. The aircraft uses a new but available type of lithium battery, which is expected to last for two-and-a-half hours after one charge of 30 minutes or less. This aircraft has an altitude upper limit of 32,000 feet, a maximum payload of 1134 kg, and a peak range of up to 815 km. “Alice costs about $200 per flight hour to operate. A turboprop with similar performance costs between $1,200 and $2,000 per flight hour, meaning ticket prices for Alice could be substantially less than those for conventional aircraft,” says Eviation CEO Omer Bar-Yohay. Certification and entry into service are expected in 2024. www.eviation.co

THE ARCHER eVTOL

Last month, California-based Archer Aviation announced two key eVTOL development program milestones: Receiving its G-1 issue paper from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and a merger with Atlas Crest Investment Corp. that made it a publicly-traded company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The startup also started flight tests with its autonomous, two-seat Maker demonstration aircraft which has a 240-km/h top speed, and a 96-km range before reserve on a charge. By 2023, Archer expects to see a piloted four-seater that will be the first into production. www.archer.com

THE POLESTAR PRECEPT CONCEPT

“A vision that will lead to Polestar 5, our electric performance 4-door GT, set to be launched in 2024.” - Polestar Polestar, which started out as the performance sub-brand of Volvo, has emerged as one of the more interesting contenders in the luxury electric car market. It currently offers only two vehicles, but the presentation of this elegant 4-door model with its updated design language shows what is just around the corner. The upcoming Polestar 5 is expected to use a bonded aluminum space frame and an in-house developed motor called P10 that will put out up to more than 600 hp in its most powerful version. The Polestar 5 is expected to be launched in 2024, most likely following two new SUVs, the 3 and 4. We expect a price tag similar to that of a Porsche Panamera. www.polestar.com

THE THUNDERTRUCK

If you are not too sure about the Tesla Cybertruck, how about the Thundertruck? This concept of an all-electric 800hp all-terrain truck uses a one-of-a-kind take on the future of off-roading. Wolfgang LA, a creative agency based out of, yes, Los Angeles, envisions a truck that incorporates a solar-enabled “Bat Wing Awning” above the truck to capture the sun’s rays and power accessories and the A/C. The coolest feature, however, might be the “TT Range Extender” which will transform Thundertruck into a massive 6×6 with 940hp, an extended range of 900km and an expanded 10-foot cargo bed. But yes, it is only a concept at this point. Will it ever make it into production? We sure hope so! www.thundertruck.co

THE NISSAN ARIYA SINGLE SEATER

No, this almost 400bhp, all-wheel-drive single-seater is not the next-gen Formula E racecar, although Nissan competes in the all-electric race series.

THE BMW iX FLOW

Made possible by a specially developed body wrap that is tailored precisely to the contours of BMW’s all-electric iX Sports Activity Vehicle, the surface of the iX Flow can vary its shade at the driver’s prompting. When stimulated by electrical signals, the electrophoretic technology brings different colour pigments to the surface, causing the body skin to take on the desired colouration. Well-known from the displays used in eReaders, E Ink technology opens new ways of changing a vehicle’s appearance in line with the driver’s aesthetic preferences, the environmental conditions or even functional requirements. www.bmw.com

THE TOYOTA EV FLEET

Planning to launch 30 electric vehicles across its Toyota and Lexus brands by 2030, more than a dozen of the new models were recently presented at a preview event. Most striking is the Toyota Sports EV, a sports car presented in bright yellow and possibly meant to be a successor to the mid-engine MR2. Another highlight is an electric off-roader, aimed at outdoor enthusiasts, which seems to be inspired by the FJ Cruiser of late. A pickup truck will most likely be the Tacoma successor, whilst several other cars will be launched under Toyota’s BZ electric sub-brand. Lexus will launch an RZ crossover and an LFA-inspired supercar. www.toyota.com | www.lexus.com

“Our EV programs inform our Formula E program and vice versa, allowing for road-to-track technology transfer as well as track-to-road,” says Tommaso Volpe, Nissan’s motorsport director. “This concept explores the combination of the allelectric powertrain, dual motors and revolutionary all-wheeldrive system of the Ariya with a pure single-seat racing chassis.” The concept also teases the design language of future electric performance vehicles, according to a company press release, and although it iss hard to imagine they will sell a single-seat track-only car to customers, you never know... www.nissan.ca

THE 20M PROJECT CENTERFOLD A COLLABORATION BETWEEN DESIGN STUDIO NUVOLARI LENARD AND PHOTOGRAPHER JARMO POHJANIEMI It is the first time that acclaimed photographer Jarmo Pohjaniemi has entered into the yachting world, bringing his unique vision and storytelling abilities to the visualisation of this 663-foot hybrid-electric superyacht concept. “For our collaboration with Jarmo on Centerfold, we inverted that creative process. Rather than waiting for him to capture the physical yacht with his lens, we invited him to work with us from the early stages of design, to exclusively manage the yacht’s beauty from his perspective as a world-class photographer,” says Dan Lenard. Constructed of high tensile steel and aluminium, the vessel with its sleek lines would be one of the largest superyachts ever built, and it would make use of the latest technology to deliver ecologically-sensitive low emissions, or impressive speeds should the need arise. The owner can choose between different modes. The zero-emission, full-electric stealth mode is perfectly suited to cruising grounds with higher environmental sensitivity, whilst the high-speed conventional propulsion mode delivers speeds of over 35 knots, driven by powerful 100,000hp engines. www.nuvolari-lenard.com

DEANTONIO D50 OPEN “THE SMALLEST BOAT TO EVER ICLUDE A HOT TUB” Combining the two hottest trends in the market together, the De Antonio D50 is the 15-metre walkaround for those who want outboards, but with all the advantages of inboards. Based on its brother’s award-winning D46 Open hull and equipped with two, three or four hidden outboard engines, the Spanish shipyard introduces a truly unique boat. Its deck distribution offers impressive solarium areas to relax without giving up an interior that breaks the outlines of the industry. Customize it your way, you can order it with two or three cabins, and one of those is adaptable for a skipper cabin. Likewise, the interior can contain two or three bathrooms – there are many options! A truly unique feature, especially considering the size of the D50 Open, is at the bow, an optional 2.5-metre saltwater Jacuzzi will be the envy of any yachtsman. This optional, with interior window and cup holder, is the perfect finishing touch to an incomparable boat. www.deantonioyachts.com

WALLY WHY200 “WINNING THE SPACE RACE”, Wally’s futuristic-looking 27-metre wallywhy200 is a cool new ‘space’ ship in more ways than one. By absorbing space conventionally used for exterior walkways into a unique, full-beam salon, the wallywhy200’s 61-square-meter open-plan contemporary living area is increased significantly. It provides more than 200-square-metres of indoor living space, including a 22-square-metre upper deck interior and a 100-square-metre main deck interior. The lower deck has a typical footprint for the yacht’s length, with three or four double guest cabins (depending on the choice of layout option), as well as the galley and three cabins for up to five crew members (spread over 32-square-metres). Recognizing a shift in owner preferences to reduce exposure to the elements while enjoying the outdoor environment, there is ample protection from the sun, wind and rain across the 144-square metres of exterior decks. www.wally.com

LAZZARINI DESIGN has revealed a Ferrari-inspired 27-metre superyacht concept named GranTurismo Mediterranea (GTM). “We tried to imagine how a Ferrari of the seas would look like,” the press-release of the studio reads, and the inspiration from the design of a Ferrari supercar is unmistakable. Sculpted in carbon fibre, the sleek concept has a top speed of 70 knots thanks

GRAN TURISMO MEDITERRANEA to a hybrid propulsion system consisting of triple Man v12 engines, an Arneson transmission and a central Hamilton Jet drive. The racing car-inspired cockpit is fitted with pilot seats and gullwing doors, whilst the pilot cabin is outfitted with two sofas, making it a comfortable lounge before heading to the dining area on the main deck. The real highlight, though, is the garage for your supercar with an extendable platform, allowing you to drive the car onto the yacht. lazzarinidesign.net

devina ZALESKY

AMBITIOUS. DETERMINED. DRIVEN.

DEVINA ZALESKY IS THIS AND SO MUCH MORE. 86

ICONIC CONCIERGE

Devina Zalesky is best known as the president of Allwest Insurance Services Ltd., a leading auto, home and business brokerage chain which she acquired and grew with her husband, Paul Zalesky. The company has deep relationships in the Vancouver area and in BC and has grown significantly since it was established over 50 years ago. Grateful for all of their success, both Paul and Devina strongly believe in the “give back” idea and have started their own philanthropy program, donating to and supporting several organizations and causes each year, such as the recent first annual Canuck Place Childrens’ Hospice Classic Car Fund Raiser. Devina was born in Fiji, the Melanesian archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean. The economy of the islands is based primarily on tourism and agriculture, and her father, a rice farmer, worked hard to make a living for his family of five. The situation got even worse when in the early 1970s a devastating storm made landfall in Fiji, hitting the island nation with monstrous peak sustained winds. Not only was it one of the strongest tropical cyclones anywhere on earth since the modern era of global records, but it also caused widespread damage across the island and wiped out entire villages. It also destroyed Devina’s family farm, leaving them behind with almost nothing. Like many others, they made the decision to leave, and so, in 1972, her family immigrated to Canada. Immigration is never easy, especially when coming from such a different cultural and economical background. Many struggle dealing with this transition, and being the eldest of three children, Devina suddenly saw herself in the position of a provider for the family, supporting her mother and father in making enough money to pay for rent, utility bills and food. Long working days and hard work became her daily routine and by grade eight, Devina was working two jobs. She would start at 6am, opening up at a local restaurant, where she would work until she had to leave for school. Then, at lunchtime when the rest of her fellow students were enjoying a break, playing in the schoolyard, Devina would run all the way home to prepare the dinner for her mother and brothers in the little time left before she had to be back to school for her afternoon classes. Her day wouldn’t end when school was over as she had to join her mother at her second job at a cleaning company. “A strong work ethic was always in me,” says Devina. “Obviously, I had to support

my family but I also wanted to make money for myself. You see all these beautiful people on TV and in the movies, you see the nice cars, and I wanted to be able to afford those things, too. I wanted to be in the position that when I saw something nice when I saw the purse that I liked, that I could buy it.” With that ambitious mindset and after having finished school, Devina set out to follow a dream that she had since she and her family had boarded the plane to come to Canada – to become a flight attendant. She started taking courses throughout high school with Pacific Western Airlines and, upon graduation, received the certification to take to the friendly skies. Unfortunately, as a flight attendant had to be 21 years old to serve alcohol on board, 18-year-old Devina would have had to wait more than 2 years before she would be allowed to welcome and host travellers on their journey. Disappointed but not discouraged, she realized that she needed a ‘Plan B’ and luck was on her side. She went back to her high school business teacher, Mr John Adams, who had previously offered her a position with his father’s insurance agency. Devina had initially turned down his offer, thinking she was better suited to be a flight attendant, but facing years before she could start at the airline, she decided to join the insurance industry in 1981. The rest, as they say, is history. Always pushing herself to learn as much as fast as she can, Devina quickly climbed the ladder in the insurance company. “My first account was Mercedes-Benz of Canada,” she recalls. “It was New Year’s Eve and their salesman needed license plates and insurance for an important client, the owner of a restaurant. S I headed out but I had to wait until after midnight to get the transaction done. It is this type of service that makes the difference, and Mercedes-Benz continues to be a major client to this day!” After two years with the family-owned insurance agency, she felt she had reached as high as she could. She knew that she had bigger dreams and higher aspirations, and so she thanked her former teacher for the opportunity and followed an offer from Brian Coyle Insurance Agencies, which later became Allwest Insurance. It was a new chapter in her life, both in business and privately. “I met Paul in the summer of 1985,” Devina remembers with a smile on her face. “He was standing outside his office when I walked by, and we started chatting.” Quite obviously, it didn’t stop there as the two got married in Maui on New Year’s Eve in

1987. Their family became complete with two sons born three years apart. They are a tight-knit family and support each other through the trials and tribulations of life. And there was quite a series of interludes waiting for them. The power couple quickly grew their insurance company, rarely taking time off. “I was in our boardroom when I went into labour with our first son, and it didn’t take long before I headed back to the office with baby Stefan in tow,” she laughs. Finally, in 2007, they booked a well-deserved vacation with their children in Italy – and tragedy struck. Sitting on a window sill, Devina slipped and fell six metres to the ground, barely stopped by a palm tree. “They had to airlift me to a hospital in Switzerland, where I faced eight hours of surgery.” Luckily, she made a full recovery, but more devastating news was just around the corner. In 2008, Devina was diagnosed with breast cancer. She endured multiple surgeries, and more than 60 sessions of radiation, but few knew the battle she was fighting and being the determined person she is, she never missed a single day at the office. “I went for radiation every single day,” she looks back. “Always dressed in my suit, always going back to work right after.” Although she was exhausted by the end of each day, she never missed a day of work and few knew the battle she was fighting. Luckily, she was one of the fortunate ones and was soon in remission. Devina will be the first to point out that every day presents its own set of unique challenges, but believes that no challenge is too great to overcome. As she says, “It is the essence of my life!” With Devina’s drive, she continued on her path to making Allwest Insurance one of the largest ICBC Autoplan Agencies in British Columbia. With her leadership and devotion to the company, she succeeded. She has done so with heart, compassion and the ability to take charge in any situation. ICONIC CONCIERGE

LOOK SHARP THIS SEASON!

With a new season comes new planning, new goals and new opportunities, and confidence is key in helping you achieve them. Want to know the secrets to looking like the best version of yourself this season? Although there is no shortage of aesthetic treatments, there are three popular procedures that will have you looking sharp in time for Valentine’s Day and all year long.

SHARPEN YOUR JAWLINE

A Jawline Masculinization procedure is a popular treatment that uses dermal filler to sculpt a chiselled and more defined jawline with sharp angles in all the right places. The procedure time takes approximately 20 - 30 minutes with no downtime and lasts up to two years. Results are immediate.

GET YOUR SKIN IN SHAPE

The Forever Young BBL laser uses Broad Band Light to treat a variety of skin concerns such as sun damage, age spots, brown spots, fine lines and wrinkles, redness, rosacea, and pigmentation. BBL technology is more effective than traditional lasers, delivering light energy deep into your skin to stimulate and regenerate the skin cells. Treatment time takes approximately one hour, depending on areas treated, results are optimal within one week and last indefinitely with maintenance.

TAKE YOUR FITNESS TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Sometimes no matter how much dieting and exercise you do; a little help is needed. Your secret weapon to reaching your new body goals is the Ultimate Body Contouring Package — a combination of the #1 fat reduction treatment, Coolsculpting and the muscle building and toning treatment, Emsculpt. The length of CoolSculpting and Emsculpt sessions will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. Coolsculpting targets unwanted fat cells by controlled cooling delivered through an application pad that freezes the cells, whereby Emsculpt delivers the equivalent of 20,000 sit-ups or squats within 30 minutes to tone and tighten. Both the CoolSculpting fat freezing procedure and the Emsculpt toning procedure are completely non-surgical, so you can typically return to work and normal activities immediately. Results will be optimized in the weeks and months following your procedures and can last indefinitely with regular exercise and a healthy diet. Book your customized consultation at Skin Technique to see which treatments are ideal to have you looking sharp this season, but most importantly, feeling confident. Seasonal packages are on now.

For a custom consultation the experienced team at Skin Technique in downtown Vancouver is available to help with recommendations and education about all their innovative treatments and medical grade skin care products. THE MOMENTUM OF THE REVOMOOTION IS BUILDING

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS ARE NOTHING NEW. In fact, the ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first people to commit to the practice, some 4,000 years ago, although for them, the year began in mid-March when their crops were planted. A similar tradition occurred in ancient Rome, and thanks to the reform-minded emperor, Julius Caesar, who tinkered with the calendar and established January as the beginning of the year around 46 BC, the Romans set about making promises of good conduct for the coming year on January 1st, much as we do today. More recently, new year’s resolutions have become a vehicle used to further societal causes. Dry January was promoted in the UK in the early 2000s, which associated the practice with a specific health target and was registered as a trademark by the charity Alcohol Concern in 2014, urging people to abstain from alcohol for the month of January. The trend has now caught on across much of the western world. In 2014, the concept took another health-related twist with the introduction of Veganuary and, over the next 5 years, participant numbers more than doubled each year around the world. In fact, in 2019, the movement kicked off what was coined “The Year of the Vegan”. Throughout 2018, veganism had begun to regularly make headline news, which resulted in more and more vegan products being stocked in the supermarkets and plant-based foods becoming popular in restaurants and coffee shops. The perception of veganism

98

as being a quirk of hippies and a symbol of counterculture started to shift as tasty vegan options became more readily available and more convenient, whilst environmental scientists started to publish research on the impact that meat and dairy farming was having on the planet. The rise in profile of veganism throughout 2019 continued unabated, with high profile athletes, musicians, movie stars and politicians all jockeying for position on the vegan soapbox to announce their dietary allegiance and shout their support for shunning meat and dairy products. Some led with health and wellness-based reasons, others cited animal welfare motivations, whilst those passionate about environ-

every personal-best performance to being vegan. However, for the scientists among us, who choose to critique the cavalier claims brandished about by those in the popular press, delve into the research to establish where there may be bias, read the scientific research articles to understand what the study designs actually test and stop to gain clarity as to what the conclusions of the experiments really are, it was apparent that many of these claims were either exaggerated, misrepresented, biased or just blatantly wrong. In reality, as with much of the science that deals with human health and performance, very little is black and white, with an absence of grey. So, what information can we rely on?

mental causes voiced that as a reason for their change in habits. In any case, the subsequent increase in demand for vegan products precipitated a shift in the sustainability of producing vegan offerings in the food and beverage industry. Consequently, the trend gathered pace and continues to enjoy an upward trajectory, demonstrated in our own backyard by the popularity of events such as the vegan expo, Planted, that was hosted in Vancouver back in November, as well as the popularity of bars, restaurants and coffee shops offering exclusively plant-based menus across the city.

The commentary that is probably the easiest to follow is that around animal welfare. Whilst the farming industry has done much to improve standards of animal care and management over recent years, it is hard to get away from the fact that, no matter how well treated farm animals are, the simple fact is that they are kept alive for as long as they are useful. No commercial farm, adopting either factory-farming or free-range methods, would stay profitable for very long if, when its chickens stopped laying, or a cow’s milk production declined, it kept them as pets because, well, it was just not fair to kill them.

Yet, as with so many fads, crazes, and movements, it is difficult to separate the fact from the fiction, the myths from the science and the noise from the substance. As veganism became “cool”, sensationalist documentaries were broadcast on Netflix produced by influencers with business interests in the sector, lifestyle magazines ran articles with attention-grabbing headlines and celebrity disciples attributed

The stark reality of commercial meat and dairy farming is that male offspring, whether bull, boar, or ram, are sold for meat as soon as they are physically ready for market, with the exception of the finest specimens, which are raised to sire the next generation. Meanwhile, females are sentenced to follow in their mother’s footsteps and live a life of milk or egg production, breeding and then, once their

useful lifespan is reached, are slaughtered to make room for their young. Thus, the USDA reports that while a cow’s normal lifespan is around 25 years, the vast majority barely see past their 5th birthday and most chickens are killed when egg production rates decline, which is long before they reach their potential 15-year lifespan - usually after two years. Lives routinely curtailed in the name of maximising production rates and minimising costs. So, yes, if your reason for adopting a vegan diet is to align with your homage to a cruelty-free lifestyle, going vegan is backed by research. The science is also now conclusive to support the detrimental impact of livestock farming on the environment and capacity of farmland to provide sufficient food to a burgeoning global population. The inefficiencies of animal agriculture are founded in the fact that animal feed commands resources that could otherwise have been used directly for producing food for humans. Additionally, the dependence of the industry on high yields accelerates topsoil erosion on farmland, which renders land less productive for crop cultivation and thus forces the conversion of wilderness to grazable farmland. Meanwhile, animal waste generated in large feedlots and factory farms are a leading cause of pollution in both groundwater and waterways. Further to the contamination of aquatic ecosystems, a report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) in 2006 reported the contamination of soils and drinking water supplies by manure, pesticides, and fertilisers, whilst the methane and ammonia emissions by animals contribute to greenhouse gas production and acid rain prevalence.

An earlier study, conducted in 1992, reported by the UNFAO concluded that the global food supply that year could have fed about 6.3 billion people on a purely vegetarian diet, 4.2 billion people on an 85% vegetarian diet, or 3.2 people on a 75% vegetarian diet. These figures are even more pertinent given the growing food stress and food insecurity issues that ICONIC CONCIERGE

report findings to support physiological benefits of a plant-based diet, there are papers that support the nutritional value of meat, fish, or dairy foodstuffs. The problem is complex, in that not all individuals are genetically predisposed to thrive on the same optimal diet, whilst people are both culturally and emotionally invested in the topic and don’t take kindly to being told what to eat. Meanwhile, it is challenging to sift through the biases that are inherent in scientific research, present in relation to funding for studies by food producing corporations, and through the well-publicised commentaries of powerful and well-financed lobby groups that fund campaigns to discredit research that reports results counter to industry interests. Additionally, federal governing bodies, such as the US Food and Drug Ad-

nut milks which provide calcium; spinach, chickpeas, pinto beans and soy products which contain iron; and fortified foods or supplements can be consumed to source vitamin B12. Another factor to consider is the consumption of sufficient calories, as switching to a plant-based diet often requires eating a greater volume of food to achieve the same calorific intake. This also usually results in a vast increase in fibre consumption, which can have a significant impact on the digestive system that can take some time for the body to normalise.

ministration (FDA) are renowned for making decisions based as much on financial and commercial interests as on food safety standards. So, who can you trust? In any case, transitioning to a vegan diet requires planning, patience, and education. Bodies don’t respond well to sudden and dramatic change, as physiological processes take time to adapt to a variation in fuel substrates. Whilst vegan foods, such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and beans are low in fat, contain no cholesterol and are rich in fibre, meat eaters are used to deriving most of their protein and nutrient requirements from meat, fish, and dairy products. However, with guidance, insight, and a determination to change eating habits, the diet can be changed to include a greater amount of legumes, grains, nuts and seeds which are a good source of protein; broccoli, kale, tofu, fortified juices and

desire to change fundamental components of your health and wellness encourage you to consider such a change,

Consequently, it is not for me to recommend that everyone switch to a vegan diet based on the potential health benefits that are reported. However, should the environmental concerns, animal welfare issues or

are being reported in both the developed and developing world, some 20 years later. Thus, there is a strong argument for converting land that is currently used for farming animals to grow protein rich plants that could more efficiently sustain the rising

food demands caused by ongoing population growth. Again, if this is your motivation for eating less meat, the science is conclusive in support of those reasons. The health and wellness arguments for adopting a vegan diet are, however, somewhat less clear cut. The consumption of animal fats and proteins has been linked to cardiovascular disease, colon cancer, lung cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension, obesity, and other conditions. However, for all the papers that

I can recommend three courses of action to take. Firstly, take your time to do some thorough research on what this would entail and to expand on the information I have touched on here, thus ensuring your initial motivation to change is well-founded and thus more resilient to resistance points along the way. Secondly, consider scheduling in your routine medical review and requesting the inclusion of tests to identify any vitamin and mineral deficiencies, as well as food sensitivities or allergies. Finally, take this information with you and speak to a registered dietitian, who will be able to help you identify the risk factors of a new diet and then create an informed and planned strategy for a successful transition.

JASON Mc Ivor CHIEF ALIGNMENT OFFICER AT BUCK

CULTURE, BRAND, MARKETING, SALES, DISTRIBUTION BY DR. OLIVER FINLAY

IC: In fifteen words or less, who are you and what do you do? JM: Jason McIvor, co-founder of the BUCK brand. I turn possibility into realized value. IC: Tell us about BUCK and what makes your products different from anything else currently on the market. JM: The BUCK brand is a bold statement in goodness. We believe in the inherent goodness of this earth and the people in it. We bring the goodness of the earth to our consumers through highly nutritious buckwheat-based products that burst with flavour. Buckwheat is amazing because it is a superfood, which also helps regenerate the earth. Our footprint from an environmental standpoint, isn’t just small, but our products literally help turn poor soil into rich soil.

We are innovators in the dairy alternative space and have two product categories in the market. One is a buckwheat milk, which is the first in North America. The second is a buckwheat gelato, which is the first commercially available buckwheat gelato in the world. We are different because we are bold innovators, focused on creating amazing products for our consumers. We harmonise people, planet and profit. Our innovation is extending into plant-based protein. Earlier this year, we created a buckwheat protein isolate on a small scale, that has a broad range of applications. We are really excited about the future! IC: It’s been an incredibly tough year for so many industries, but for those entrepreneurs starting a new company at a time when supply chain issues are rife, the ecosystem must have been far from kind. What challenges have you faced over the last 18 months? JM: The biggest challenge that we are facing right now is having new consumers sample our products. In a classic start-up where you have a new product, a no-brain strategy is to share samples and host tastings. However, the sample and tasting program for a lot of stores has stopped and so we’re finding creative ways of having consumers taste our products through small packaging at tradeshow events, giveaways and hitting social media hard.

cused on what is right in front of us and this perspective is often limiting. Believe it when you see it type of thing. As entrepreneurs it is so important to hold the vision of who you’re becoming, know the goodness of that and let that drive you, as opposed to being directed by the realities of what’s around you. Then when the wins do come, savour them, voice them, champion them and celebrate them with enthusiasm. IC: Personally, what is it about BUCK that you are so passionate about? JM: I love who we are and am passionate about the positive impact we are having in this world. Our tag line is “Be BUCK, Own Your Goodness”. In this statement we acknowledge the goodness of others while acknowledging that BUCK culture and BUCK products help support your goodness. At the same time, I love that we benefit the earth, as BUCK literally helps regenerate the soil. I love that I’m focused in an area of business that I love, which is the food space. I’m a foodie at heart and I know that food is one thing that can easily bring cultures together. When you share an amazing food experience it brings people together. As we come together, the possibility of a better world becomes a reality. Finally, I love that we are focused on supporting health. Life with health can bring so much joy. We support health by using highquality, clean ingredients. IC: This is your first foray into the food and beverage sector. What experiences that you have gained from developing brands in other industries have been valuable as you navigate this industry?

IC: On a positive note, what lessons have you learnt that will keep you in good stead as you grow the business? JM: The main lessons we’ve learned are to constantly celebrate our successes and connect with the greatness of our company, product and our employees. In this world, you have people telling you all the reasons why you’re not going to succeed, or why all the competitors are going to make it noisy for you and all the difficulties you may have. So, it’s important to focus on the wins. Also, as humans, I think we’re naturally fo-

JM: For a brand to truly grow there are two things that are an absolute: authenticity and integrity. If you don’t have both, brands will fail. We cultivate these two core principles through our culture where we trust in goodness, support learning, are bold and mindful, empower our “people” (employees, partners, and consumers), have fun, believe in our product, and align to our core values and principles. IC: What are you enjoying most about growing the brand and what is your vision for Buck’s evolution over the next 3 years? JM: What I love most about growing the brand is knowing that when people are eating our food, they are connecting with what’s good about this earth and what’s good about themselves. I love the idea of people elevating their wellbeing both physically and mentally and then doing great things in this

world. In the next 3 years we see ourselves as a dominant brand with a high sales velocity and a passionate following in North America. I also see us being well-funded, which will enable us to take advantage of amazing opportunities like the plant-based protein sector. IC: What do you think is driving the focus on developing more natural food stuffs, with fewer ingredients over recent years? JM: Three things in my opinion. Firstly, an over-exposure to processed foods. Secondly, the belief in possibility, in that it’s possible to have more natural foods that satisfy people, planet and profit. We have seen some amazing companies do this very well, and having had their appetites whet, consumers are wanting more. Finally, at the end of the day, or end of your life, the meaningful moments will be those ones that have created joy in our lives and the lives of others. With the additional pressures on our environment, consumers are returning to foods as a focus for health and more joyful outcomes in their lives. IC: As showcased at the recent Planted Expo, where your strawberry gelato won Best Product in Show, there are some incredible natural food, beverage and supplementation start-ups taking the world by storm in the Greater Vancouver Area, the Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island at the moment. What do you think is behind this movement in the region? JM: Living in Vancouver, we have a deep connection to factors that positively influence quality of life. We have gorgeous lakes, mountains, and beaches, whilst having access to amazing facilities and an abundance of food varieties. These aspects naturally attract cultures from around the world, which enhance the existing West Coast Canadian culture as we find ways to harmonize. Innovation is encouraged, when you are exposed to this type of diversity, with an undercurrent of support and integration. IC: Which other local sector start-ups should we be keeping an eye out for at the moment and why?

JM: The Juice Truck. These guys are driven with passion and are generating great momentum for their brand and product offerings. They are a bit past the start-up phase, but we love them. IC: Over the next five years, what would success for Buck look like to you and founder Peter Yupangco? JM: Success would look like a dominant North American brand, which has a strong Asian business component. We are currently fundraising and so part of the success will be to secure investment from partners aligned to the above vision. IC: What do you enjoy most about your work? JM: I LOVE communicating our brand. I love what we stand for and who we are. I love getting in front of key buyers and closing deals. IC: What 4 words would your closest friends use to describe you? JM: Driven, insightful, heart-centered. IC: Thank you Jason! I really enjoyed talking to you and trying some of your products – both the strawberry and maple walnut gelatos are real winners, as was the buckwheat mylk. JM: Thank you so much, we are humbled. I loved speaking to you as well. When we met at the Expo I meant to say that I love your mindful focus. There was so much craziness going on at the conference centre and I thought your ability to be in the present moment and conversation was elevated. IC: …and finally, here are our ‘Completely Unrelated, but Nevertheless Entertaining Standard 10 Questions’…you ready?

104

JM: There is a place inside all of us that is a tremendous source of strength. It is undiminishable and untouchable by others. When you connect with this source, and get to know who you truly are, your unlimited self appears. From this point, everything you have learned along the way has not been lost and the strength of who you are is still very much alive. The clarity of how you want to create would be even stronger.

I am currently driving a Nissan Leaf and Nissan Pathfinder. My dream car would be the first safe driverless electric car. I find the sound of electric cars so satisfying.

In saying all this, I would create an environment that supports this knowing. I would surround myself with people that know my worth and focus my energy on things that I love to do, while taking care of the immediate needs. I would rebuild from a place of passion and let that fire in my belly drive me to inspired actions. My focus would absolutely be on growing business and brands because that is one of my core passions.

IC: Who would play you in a movie about your life?

IC: We finish this interview and as you step outside, you find a lottery ticket that ends up winning you $20 million. What do you do? JM: I would set aside enough for me and my family. I would pour money into our own BUCK facility that creates buckwheat protein, BUCK drink mix, and BUCK gelato. We are already on our way, but this would really help accelerate a part of our business that has massive potential. The rest I would put into building an app that develops our ability to appreciate what we have. When we are in an appreciative state it unlocks potential and allows us to access our creative genius. Could you imagine a million people accessing their creative genius on a consistent basis? Next level. IC: You can invite 5 people for a dinner party…and the guest list isn’t restricted by the confines of time and mortality. Who joins you for dinner and why? JM: Warren Buffet, because…Warren Buffet. Keanu Reeves, because he seems to have something figured out in terms of creating a happy life. Nikola Tesla, because he was an amazing innovator and thinker. Mother Teresa, so that I can learn about how to advocate and support positive initiatives versus pushing against things I don’t want. Finally, Walt Disney, because of his creative genius. Not sure how they would get along, but I would have a blast!

JM: Bring it on!

IC: What was your first car, what do you drive now and what is your dream car?

IC: You lose everything you own. How do you rise like a phoenix from the ashes?

JM: My first car was a Honda Civic with a skull for a gear shift. Ahhh…the memories.

ICONIC CONCIERGE

IC: What one piece of advice would you give to your 16-year-old self? JM: Save your money at your various jobs and find a way to buy property in Whistler. I did end up buying some property in the valley, but man, I would have loved a house in Whistler ;)

JM: When I was younger and had hair, people would come up to me for an autograph… when I asked who they thought I was they said, “Tom Green”. But these days I’ve gotten more comments about looking like Prince William…so Tom Green or Prince William. Lol. IC: Where is your favourite travel destination and why? JM: I love the European culture and the Tuscan hillside, so it has to be Florence. I’m also a fan of Tuscan reds. A nice wine, great food, and great art are a recipe for success. IC: Tell me your favourite joke… JM: What animal loves French lingerie? Said in a French accent Zeee bra. IC: Where is your favourite Vancouver restaurant? JM: Ooohhh, this is an easy one for me Grounds and Greens in White Rock. Ben and Mannel have elevated food palates and poured their experience from Four Seasons and Cactus Club into their amazing restaurant. Maybe this is the start-up that I think people should be on the lookout for. IC: Complete the sentence: “Vancouver is a great place to be an entrepreneur because…” JM: There are so many people and companies that support innovation. IC: Thank you Jason and best of luck to you and Peter with growing the Buck brand!

ARTS & MUSIC VANCOUVER’S ICONIC ART SCENE IN REVIEW by Dr. Oliver Finlay

November saw the return of live music tours to Vancouver, with artists once again performing in front of packed audiences.

City and Colour

The first act to return to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre was City and Colour, selling out three shows between November 11 and 13. After spending the previous month touring venues south of the 49th parallel, Dallas Green launched the Canadian leg of his tour in Vancouver, with an atmosphere that reverberated with a sense of celebration, as the abstinence from live music over the previous year was boisterously renounced. Whilst many of the patrons had clearly forgotten how to behave on a night out, Green was overtly delighted at the opportunity to play to a home crowd once again. Bahamas

Supported by long-time friend and instrumentalist, Matt Kelly, the acoustic set created a more intimate atmosphere than is often the case at such expansive accommodations. To this end, the audience were notably vocal, both with outbursts of adoration as well as sharing the vocal responsibilities during songs such as The Girl and Lover Come Back. Reciprocating the casual dialogue with the crowd, Green occasionally used the opportunities during instrument exchanges to share his appreciation for the chance to perform in a post-COVID world and explain the context of songs such as Hello, I’m in Delaware, which he attributed to a rather emotionally confused time in his early career. This evening of shared gratitude was, perhaps, the perfect tone to set for a return to live performances after such a protracted absence. The following week, Bahamas welcomed the masses back to the Vogue Theatre for gigs on November 18 and 19, as part of the Still Sad tour. Whilst his style of music may not be renowned for its upbeat and lively sentiments, the live experience of Afie Jurvanen and his supporting musicians is one full of humour, wit, and energy. Whilst the irony cannot be lost on the listener that one of the most upbeat songs in their repertoire, Up With the Jones, tackles the rather mundane and sobering topic of personal and societal debt, Jurvanen suggested that the music critics in the audience describe the night’s proceedings as a “delightful evening, with optimism in the air”.

Thievery

costume designers delivered a powerful yet cohesive evening of creative expression. The longstanding love affair between Vancouver and the DC-helmed collective, Thievery Corporation, continued at the Commodore Ballroom on December 6 and 7. Rob Garza quarterbacked his eclectic assortment of artists for an elevating evening that encompassed all the classic tracks that the group have recorded over the last couple of decades. From sultry jazz offerings, like Lebanese Blonde and Sweet Tides, to reggae beats including Radio Retaliation and Road Block, and high octane hip hop performances in Warning Shots, the energy ebbed and flowed to reflect the emotion of each song.

Given that this tour is promoting Bahamas’ latest offering Sad Hunk, it was perhaps to be expected that Jurvanen started the set with one of its best-loved tracks, All I’ve Ever Known. And, whilst other recent hits from this release were prominent inclusions, such as Own Alone and Trick to Happy, the audience were delighted to be able to sing along to several more-established fan favourites, including Caught Me Thinking, No Expectations, and Opening Act. The set was basic, thanks to the recent floods having trapped stage adornments along with the much of the band’s gear, in Kelowna, but the subsequent necessity to perform on rented instruments on a bare stage didn’t distract from the delivery of a charismatic and entertaining evening from Jurvanen and his crew. Delightful indeed. Following the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s triumphant return to live action in October, Vancouver Opera made its bow for the 2021–2022 season with their innovative contemporary dance interpretation of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s epic story of love and longing, Orfeo Ed Euridice, on December 4 and 5. The VO’s bold collaboration with director and choreographer Idan Cohen of Ne. Sans Opera and Dance, brought a vibrant energy to the beautiful libretto by Calzabigi, through the representation of Amore and her accomplices entertaining their guests in performing the romantic myth from her parlour. In the lead role, mezzo-soprano, Mireille Lebel, portrayed a convincing Orfeo opposite Krisztina Szabó and supported by Mireille Asselin in the roles of Euridice and Amore respectively. Meanwhile, the collaboration between the singers, dancers, orchestra, set and

The band are renowned for delivering vastly different sets depending on who joins Garza on stage that particular night. Since the late nineties Garza and co-producer Eric Hilton, who rarely tours, have released tracks that could fit into a variety of genre descriptors including acid jazz, dub, bossa nova, hip hop, and reggae, blended with elements of Indian and Middle Eastern music. Vancouver is normally graced with a full-tour bus and this time was no exception with Rob Myers, Puma Ptah, Racquel Jones, Mr Lif, Loulou Ghelichkani, Natalie Clavier, Jeff Franca and the latest addition Dan Africano, who was standing in for the more established bassist, Ashish Vyas, joining Garza on stage. The artists routinely rotate on and off the mics throughout and despite, or maybe because of, the fluid nature of the group, have always seemed to share a camaraderie more akin to a sports team than a band and genuinely seem to thrive in each other’s company. The result was an evening of great vibes, fun and dancing that flowed between those on and off stage. Following a previous date being postponed due to the global pandemic, Noah Kahan eventually appeared at the Commodore Ballroom on December 12 and was welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd of loyal fans, who sang along with his every word from the opening bar of A Troubled Mind, from his recent EP Cape Elizabeth, right through to the moment he walked off stage after closing with Young Blood. The Vermont native is renowned for his self-deprecating humour and, whilst his two-year absence from Vancouver has seen him evolve considerably as an artist, his easy banter with the crowd has remained and subsequently he was quick to build a rapport with his audience.

Kahan has been extremely productive throughout the embryonic years of his career since he burst on to the scene in 2017 with Noah Kahan singles Young Blood and Hurt Somebody. Featuring alongside False Confidence and Mess these tracks also anchored his debut album, Busyhead, which was only released in 2019. Consequently, Kahan was performing material from his recent EP Cape Elizabeth and his new album I Was/I Am for the first time in Vancouver, and yet the audience knew every song. Kahan is a natural performer and on this evidence, is fast becoming a must-see artist whenever he shows up in Rain City. A YEAR IN REVIEW... For the first column of 2022, we continue our annual look back at some of the memorable moments that took place on our TV show last year. Though it was another year of Covid-related uncertainty, restrictions, and difficulties for many businesses and industries, we did have some moments that made us smile in 2021.

“THE VOICE” - STACEY KENT We had a number of very talented musicians on the show last year – legends like Nick Gilder as well as newcomers making a sizeable impression like local singer/songwriter Michelle Creber. But one artist stood out, who is, simply put, one of the best jazz singers in the world. In 2021 we welcomed Stacey Kent to our show from her then-home in Colorado. The award winning singer talked about her long career (which includes a large, dedicated fan base all over the world), and the release of her latest album Songs from Other Places. The collection of classic songs and new compositions are based around a theme of absence and longing. After the last two years, it’s something we can all relate to. www.staceykent. com “THE READ” - TJ NEWMAN A number of authors joined us in 2021 to talk about their latest works, including first-time author, TJ Newman. A former flight attendant, Newman wrote the majority of her book, Falling, while working on cross-country, red-eye flights. The result: A runaway, best-seller which was on everyone’s list of top summer books to read. Hollywood noticed too, and a bidding war for the film rights soon followed, with Universal shelling out a seven figures. The chilling, page-turning plot of Falling is simple: A pilot flying from LAX to JFK has a choice to either crash the plane or his wife and children will be killed. www.tjnewmanauthor.com

“THE READ” - KIMBERLY TRUHLER Hollywood film and fashion expert, Kimberly Truhler joined us to talk about fashion of the 1940’s – specifically those worn in the movies by femmes fatales and the trench coat-wearing men in their lives. Film Noir Styles: The Killer 1940’s explores how film noir played a part in influencing fashion of that decade, with stars Veronica Lake, Lana Turner, Ava Gardner, Humphrey Bogart and Alan Ladd leading the way. Fans of the classic movie channel TCM will want to add this book to their list! www.glamamor.com BEN HOWARD

“THE TV BINGE” - SHETLAND We have always enjoyed showcasing film and TV from around the world, and last year we fell in love with a British TV show called Shetland, now in its 6th Season. The Shetland Islands are located in the North Sea, between Scotland and Norway. These rugged, isolated and often foggy islands are an unlikely setting for a crime drama, but with a great cast and scripts based on the bestselling books by award-winning crime writer, Ann Cleeves, this became must-see viewing for us! britbox.com

“THE DESTINATION” - GRANVILLE ISLAND Like many Vancouverites, historic Granville Island for us has always been a place to visit three or four times a times – the Market, perhaps a meal at one of the restaurants, a meeting over coffee – but last summer we dedicated a whole TV episode to showcasing Canada’s #2 tourist destination (#18 overall in world rankings!) and to our surprise we found so much to see and do that we returned in mid-Fall to film a second episode. We all know how common it is to see so little of one’s own “backyard”, but Covid and 2021’s ever-changing travel restrictions altered people’s habits, with many from the Lower Mainland staying local, something which benefitted Granville Island. If it’s been awhile, we highly recommend spending a day (or evening) exploring this wonderful place. granvilleisland.com “THE SPOT” - HYDRA ESTIATORIO MEDITERRANEAN & BAR Hydra Estiatorio, a Greek seafood restaurant in the Exchange Hotel, was one of the first places we showcased in this column, and it has continued to be a favourite spot of ours. Their menu truly has something for everyone and their impressive cocktail list includes several of our favourites – the “Holiday” and “Cyprus Sour”. For wine lovers, this winter Hydra Estiatorio is excited to feature Thalia wines (from the island of Crete where winemaking dates back over 4000 years), during their famous Happy Hour which operates 7 days a week, 3-6pm. They also have a great selection of additional Mediterranean wines. hydravancouver.com
