Why luxury well-aging design is strategic and wise at 55.
T
he ultimate luxury is being safe and comfortable in a home you love. It isn’t exciting to think about aging, but if you want to stay in your home long into the future, it makes sense to think about beautiful design today that you will fully appreciate tomorrow.
As young as 55, our bodies are undergoing subtle changes, from vision and balance to mobility and overall
well-being, that gradually impact our daily lives. We have surgeries such as knee or hip replacements. And despite feeling like Superman or superwoman, we are at high risk of falling and sustaining a debilitating injury. Over 60% of falls happen at home, most of which are in the bathroom. Falls are physically, emotionally, and cognitively life-changing and they are costly in recovery time as well as financially. More importantly,
According to a Harvard Housing Study, 99 percent of U.S. homes are not aging-inplace ready. Regardless of size or price point, aging is not typically a forethought or priority in the architecture and design of homes when they are built. That’s why a lot of people end up in assisted living. Their homes are not able to accommodate their needs as they age. Homes have never been considered a golden opportunity to boost longevity but they should be! It’s crucial to recognize that taking preventative measures in your living space is not just a necessity for people over 55, but a wise choice for everyone.

Luxury Design for Longevity
our homes are not built ready to prevent mishaps, let alone facilitate health recovery, safety, or accessibility, but they certainly can be.
ADVERTORIAL
Bonnie J. Lewis Design creates luxury interiors incorporating special design elements that provide critical preventative measures and allow your home to accommodate unforeseen circumstances. The result? You boost your longevity and get a design that allows you to stay independent, living happier and longer in your home. Nationally recognized for her expertise, Bonnie is one of just a handful of professional interior designers who are Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists (CAPS) in the country. She is also experienced in healthcare and senior living design. When you work with Bonnie, you are working with a degreed, award-winning designer who combines stunning aesthetics with safety and accessibility in a way that isn’t obvious or disruptive.
AS BEAUTIFUL AS IT IS SAFE AND ACCESSIBLE
Recently, Bonnie J. Lewis Design completed a project for a physician couple who bought their forever home in North
“OUR HOMES ARE NOT BUILT READY TO PREVENT MISHAPS, LET ALONE FACILITATE HEALTH RECOVERY, SAFETY, OR ACCESSIBILITY, BUT THEY CERTAINLY CAN BE.” Scottsdale. While they are still young at 55 and 65, they knew they wanted to plan for the future. It’s a smart investment for homeowners to do one remodel versus two, which is also better for the environment as it preemptively puts less in the landfill.
Bonnie always meticulously weighs the impact of every design decision and selection as she incorporates well-aging design, evidenced-based design, and Biophilic design to help clients proactively live safely and independently.
The primary bathroom involved designing a new ADA-compliant floor plan with abundant lighting, improved functionality, and accessibility while selecting appropriate finishes and ADA fixtures. Some of the standout design aesthetic elements include a custom 10-foot-high solid walnut, modern barn-style entry door, textured white wood-patterned tile plank flooring, a unique custom translucent blue window treatment, organic patterned wallpaper, 3-D wall tile, and custom cabinetry.
“Bonnie created and executed a breathtaking renovation that exceeds any spa bathroom I have ever seen anywhere in the world. She flawlessly incorporated accessibility features we did not think we would need for many years. I came to appreciate the larger shower, which could accommodate both my husband and me as I needed help with showering after I fell during a hike, breaking my wrist within months of the remodel.” Michelle Anderson, M.D.
TOP DESIGN AWARDS IN NON-AGING AND AGING DESIGN CATEGORIES
The project has already earned top national and regional design excellence awards: • GOLD – Contemporary/Modern Bathroom over 60 sq. ft. from ASID Arizona North • GOLD – Universal Design from Master Design Awards-Qualified Remodeler • 1ST PLACE – Aging-in-Place/Universal Design from NKBA Arizona. If you want to consider both splendor and safety as you remodel your home, downsize, or are planning to build a new home, call or visit bonniejlewisdesign.com.

PUBLISHER’S POV
LIVE BEAUTIFULLY WITH ME
I
Renee M. Dee Publisher renee@iconiclife.com @iconiclifemag @iconicreneedee
n ancient China, the Taoists taught that a constant inner smile ensured health, happiness and longevity. I love that because I believe that is part of it, but certainly not all of it.
Health has become the new wealth; without it, you have very little. A growing number of providers offering modalities, treatments and protocols require an investment, and they are gaining traction in the mainstream.
The topic of longevity is “trending” in my world. That’s why I felt strongly about creating a special issue of ICONIC LIFE, talking about longevity and starting the new year with some inspiration and information.
The first time I did cryotherapy and compression therapy was eight years ago. Now, I feel like there is a cold therapy location in most shopping centers. My doctors just suggested a protocol of hyperbaric oxygen therapy following surgery; that was not a suggestion ten years ago.
Even more, my son is part of a community of young people focused on living a healthy, clean life, and our household runs on a clean-living philosophy. You know, when you have a support system, it makes it easier to make healthy choices.
Working with so many builders and designers, we hear of more clients requesting cold plunge tubs and salt rooms in their homes, and some are installing mini refrigerators in their primary bathrooms for their peptide injections.
First, we all agree that the key to longevity is more about the quality of life than the length. We want to have healthy bodies that stay agile and active. We want healthy minds that keep up with our bodies, and we want to look as if the hands of time have barely touched us.
We will explore as much as this issue will hold on the topic of longevity. We are working with people I know and trust, but, as always, you should discuss anything related to your health or decisions with your doctor.
Given the natural aging process, that’s easier said than done, but more in the ether of conversation today than ever. Living longer and living better is more of an art than a science. I love that. There are so many simple things you can do to enhance your longevity. Don’t get caught up thinking that achieving optimal health has to be expensive. Everyone I talked to for this issue said if you master the habits of getting enough sleep, putting good things into your body and moving every day, you are on the right track.
We are in an era where personal healthcare should be a collaborative process with your provider. You are as responsible for doing research as your physician, and we all need to get the best advice we can, but ultimately, the choices we make are ours. We need to advocate for our health, actively participate and ask many questions. While we don’t have all the answers here, we can start the conversation. To your health,
Renee M. Dee

DRINK WELL, WELL Indulge in guilt-free wine at Dry Farm Wines. By Nakayla Shakespeare
M
ost of us don’t associate wine with being organic, especially since it’s uncommon for wine to be cultivated organically. In fact, only five percent of global vineyards are organic. Dry Farm Wines helps bring those five-percent wines to your doorstep. Dry Farm Wines is a premier natural wine delivery service. With 100 percent of its grapes grown organically, Dry Farm Wines has committed to producing pure, organic and sugar-free wine. The company sources its ingredients and partners with over 800 small family growers in Europe that use heritage farming practices and dry farming (a method that doesn’t involve irrigation). Dry Farm Wines offers monthly or bi-monthly memberships and allows you to select wine based on your preferences. Each shipment comes with six bottles of wine. Publisher Renee Dee had the chance to indulge in a white wine and was impressed with its quality and flavor profile. “The wine was super bright and crisp, and I feel good drinking it because I know it is a healthier alternative to store-bought wine,” Dee says. With a certification test of uncompromising purity criteria, you can have confidence that if the wine is from Dry Farm Wines, its quality is unwavering. ICONICLIFE.COM

Give Infrared the
GREEN LIGHT Discover how infrared light therapy can improve your health when working out. By Nakayla Shakespeare
P
rioritizing a healthy lifestyle goes beyond eating healthy foods and establishing a regular exercise routine. Innovations within the health and wellness industry have led to new procedures, remedies and practices that you can implement to lead a healthier and happier life. One modality gaining steam is the integration of infrared into your workouts.
CELLULAR HEALTH
Infrared saunas benefit the entire body on a cellular level. With infrared workouts, you exercise in a sauna under infrared lights to help detox the body and make your workout more effective.
Infrared technology can penetrate the skin deep into muscle tissue and joints to relieve minor and chronic pain. Infrared also increases the recovery time of injuries.
WEIGHT LOSS
A significant benefit of infrared is its effectiveness in anti-aging. The near-infrared wavelength, more commonly known as red light therapy, increases collagen production, reduces wrinkles in the skin and helps even out skin tones.
Studies have shown when individuals exercise in an infrared sauna, heart rate has been known to increase, and circulation throughout the body is improved, speeding up metabolism and leading to quicker weight loss.
DETOXIFICATION
The body works up a sweat faster with the increased temperatures in infrared saunas. Infrared technology heats the body directly, which triggers the core temperature of the body to rise, which causes the body to eliminate toxins more effectively with every workout.
Infrared saunas increase blood circulation. As the blood circulates more effectively, toxins can flow from the cellular level onto the skin’s surface. This cellular detox helps with general cell health, muscle recovery and a stronger immune system.
PAIN RELIEF
ANTI-AGING
Many gyms, such as HOTWORX and Red Effect Infrared Fitness, offer dynamic infrared workout experiences. As a member of an infrared gym, I can say from firsthand experience that I have never felt stronger, healthier and more confident in my body. NOTE: Infrared therapy should be used with appropriate moderation.

Uncover the charm of The Perfect Secret, your new go-to med-spa in South Scottsdale for all your beauty and self-care needs. By Sam Micatrotto Photography by Stephanie Neiheisel, GothGloss
N
estled in the heart of South Scottsdale, The Perfect Secret presents itself as a clandestine oasis of luxury and rejuvenation, where beauty is not just a pursuit but a well-kept secret waiting to be discovered. The luxury med spa was born from the visionary minds of husband-and-wife team Irena and Matthew Mielke and takes the traditional concept of indulgence to a new level of luxury and relaxation. Time is a scarce commodity for most of us, and pursuing beauty often requires managing various appointments and locations. The Perfect Secret understands the challenges busy individuals face, especially those navigating the ebbs and flows of parenthood. Gone are the days of juggling childcare logistics and hurried appointments. Upon arrival, you can drop your children off at the on-site kids’ room, allowing you to indulge in luxurious treatments without the added stress of coordinating childcare or booking a babysitter.
ICONICLIFE.COM
41
With a lineup of comprehensive services that cater to every facet of beauty, The Perfect Secret makes visiting multiple locations obsolete. Since its inception last September, the spa has evolved, initially allowing high end providers who rent space to offer services such as massage therapy, makeup application, spray tanning and nail treatments. “[The services] are actually constantly changing,” Irena Mielke points out. “I would say the injectable, med spa kind of stuff will be consistent, but we always love to let other providers shine for however long they’d like to be with us. We are a platform [and] a springboard for other smaller businesses to gain an audience so that we can help them grow their businesses as well.” This dedication to versatility aligns with The Perfect Secret’s vision of convenience and luxury.
The Perfect Secret is a go-to haven for all beauty and wellness needs. “We really are a one-stop shop for all things beauty and wellness. We’re not just advertised as that,” Matthew Mielke noted when he and Irena sat down with ICONIC LIFE Publisher Renee Dee for the ICONIC HOUR podcast. At The Perfect Secret, one could seamlessly transition from a lash appointment to Botox or filler injections, followed by a luxurious facial, all within the confines of the spa’s elegant 3,000 square feet. This streamlined approach not only saves time but also provides a luxurious, comprehensive experience, making The Perfect Secret is a go-to haven for all beauty and wellness needs. “We really wanted to create the space where we had the best provider for specific professions. I think that people appreciate the convenience. This is like luxury convenience. What’s better?” Irena Mielke says.

Remedy An innovative social approach to healing and longevity. By Nakayla Shakespeare 46

I
f you are looking for an experience that elevates your senses to a new state of relaxation with top-of-theline amenities and technology that will satisfy your wellness needs, Remedy Place is your destination. As the world’s first social wellness club, Remedy Place aims to encourage people to take their health and well-being into their own hands.
Photos courtesy of Remedy Place
With locations in West Hollywood and New York City, the club strives to give power back to its members when it comes to their health and wellness. “I originally planned a career path in conventional medicine, but during my pre-medical studies and numerous volunteer hours in healthcare settings, I developed mixed feelings about what I wanted for my future,” Remedy Place founder, Dr. Jonathan Leary says. “This realization sparked my idea of creating a different kind of clinic—one that prioritizes design with more comfortable environments, treatments and experiences that are enjoyable, and a new level of personalized attention I felt was missing from the healthcare landscape.
“My goal was to shift our healthcare model from ‘sick care’ to a new form of healthcare that empowers individuals not only to naturally address their health issues but also to become self-sufficient in managing their health,” he explains. Leary found that most people struggle with maintaining a healthy lifestyle while staying social, so he decided to marry the two concepts, and thus, Remedy Place was born. It’s a place where members can manage their health journeys and participate in treatments with others, creating a shared experience and establishing relationships. Members’ health and wellness are considered with every aspect of Remedy Place, from the high-end, zen-like interior design, lush greenery, soft lighting and sophisticated furniture to the luxurious services offered, Leary’s social wellness club is thoroughly designed to heal. “The importance of longevity cannot be overstated. It’s not just about adding years to our lives but ensuring that we are, as we like to say, ‘actively aging’—feeling and looking better as we age,” he says.
ICONICLIFE.COM
47
“Longevity is about feeling good, being preventive and giving you the opportunity to perform better in all aspects of your life,” Leary explains. “In today’s fast-paced world, we often neglect our health in the pursuit of success, simply managing the demands of daily life. However, considering longevity reminds us to invest in our health now to enjoy a more fulfilling and active life in the future. “At Remedy Place, we believe in a proactive approach to longevity,” he continues. “It’s not merely about addressing health issues when they arise but actively working to prevent them. We do this by focusing on self-care, healthy social substitutions, and healing design, all of which contribute to a better life.” A plethora of services and practices are offered, including cryotherapy, ice baths, hyperbaric chambers, infrared saunas, lymphatic massage devices, red light therapy, contrast therapy, and the new Remedy Roller, an automated body massage device designed for self-myofascial release. There are also more traditional options that members can experience, such as acupuncture, cupping, chiropractic services and physiotherapy. Group services are also available to aid in the human connection aspect of Remedy Place. These encompass group breathwork sessions, meditation classes, movement practices, and other more deluxe services like Watch and Drip, where 48

Learn from Andy Maurer how you can better your life through leadership. By Andy Maurer
P
eople often lose themselves in the life of leadership. They spend their energy and time inspiring others, solving people’s problems and caring for the emotional, relational and financial needs of spouses, children and team members. Yet in return, they often forget about their own needs and neglect their own emotional, relational, physical and mental well-being. As a result, they lose touch with what they feel, who they are, and where they are headed. To reclaim their sense of health, life and longevity, they must go on a deep journey to find their identity and uncover their purpose.
REDEFINE YOUR IDENTITY AND WORTH
Identity gives leaders a solid foundation for who they are and the value they bring to the world and relationships. It allows them to show up as their full selves with confidence, courage and joy. When a leader lacks identity, they often spend their whole life becoming whatever everyone else wants them to be, causing them to forget who they truly are in the process.
Photography by Katelyn Cantu
As a result, their worth and value become fused with their performance, their peace becomes dependent upon the opinion of others, and their relationships lack depth, meaning and connection. From the outside, their life looks immaculate, perfected and joyful, yet on the inside, they often feel lost, stuck, lonely and exhausted. As a leader, If you resonate with these feelings, here are a couple of exercises you can do to help you discover and live out an authentic identity. First, you need to anchor your worth and value in something other than your performance. Your significance and worth are not something you work “for” it is something you work “from”. If you try to achieve significance
through success, you will ultimately be left feeling more empty than you began. This is why so many leaders spend decades trying to outperform their previous success, yet rarely ever find true rest. The saying is true: If you’re not enough today, you will never be enough tomorrow. Take out a sticky note and write on it, “You’re enough, not because of what you do, but because of who you are.” Place this on your bathroom mirror, in your car, and at your office. You might not initially believe it, but as you read it over days, weeks and months you will start to feel a sense of freedom, gratitude, joy and peace. Who you are is more than enough and therefore, worthy to be loved. So don’t take the bait that you can earn your worth through simply working harder and doing more. Next, once you begin to untangle your value from your performance, then you should make a list of three “I am” statements. These are statements that describe who you are at your core. They could be statements such as: “I am a visionary leader”, “I am emotionally connected,” “I am courageously confident”, or “I am relationally loyal.” It doesn’t matter what you write down as long as it feels deeply connected and authentic to you. Next, write out a sentence for each “I am statement” describing how these qualities add value to people and the world around you. For instance, you might say, “I am courageously confident. This allows me to lean into risk with courage, knowing that pain is the pathway to growth and success.”As you redefine the source of your worth and articulate your unique personality and contribution to the world, you will be able to show up with more courage and confidence. CAST VISION FOR A LIFE OF PURPOSE
While identity is essential for a life of longevity, you also need purpose. Purpose allows leaders to stay on their course with joy, hope and passion even when they get knocked down and all the odds are stacked against them. Purpose allows people to cast a compelling vision for their company, community and family, one that inspires others to come alongside them in that vision. Leaders who lack purpose feel exhausted and depleted from chasing too many paths. They lack intentionality and are confused about their future and why it matters. From the outside, everyone is looking to them for guidance and direction, yet on the inside, they can feel depressed, discouraged and directionless. If this describes your life as a leader, here are a couple of exercises you can do to help you identify, clarify and materialize your purpose. First, visualize life five years in the future and ask yourself, what kind of life do you want to pursue? How do you want people to feel when they are in your presence? What impact do you want to have in the world? What do you want to be remembered for? What type of relationship do you want to have with your children, spouse and friends? These can be helpful questions to gain clarity about your purpose in life.
Photography by Charity Maurer
Lastly, write out your five core motivators in life. To persevere through hardship and pain, every leader needs to know their “why”. In other words, why do you wake up every morning and continue to show up to life and leadership? Are you motivated to give your kids a better future than you had? Are you motivated by financial freedom? Are you motivated by deep relationships and moments of adventure with friends and family? To have clarity about your purpose, you need to define why this purpose is so important to you. As you work to redefine your identity and cast a vision for a life of purpose, you will be able to show up as a whole leader, full of joy, confidence, courage and peace.
ANDY MAURER After more than 15 years in the health and wellness industry as a licensed therapist, personal trainer and professional speaker, I became acutely aware of the unique challenges leaders face. I resolved to meet these struggles head-on by founding Pursue Whole, a unique coaching program that blends the best teachings of executive coaching and therapy. My integrated approach provides leaders who often find themselves under high amounts of pressure with a safe space to process their inner struggles and cast a vision for a life of wholeness. As I coach CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, professional athletes and entertainment executives, I am determined to help leaders pursue a meaningful and connected vision for their lives, leadership, and relationships. After a decade of working with leaders on these issues, I created one of my most transformative coaching frameworks, Big Vision. As part of the coaching journey, I help leaders discover who they are, where they are headed, why balance matters and who they need in their lives to get there. As a result, this unlocks their ability to prioritize what matters most, cultivate deep relationships and confidently lead others through struggle and into success. This year, I launched the Purpose and Identity workbook that allows individuals to create their own one-page Big Vision, independent of my coaching program. My mission is to help leaders reconnect with their authentic selves and pursue a meaningful and connected future for their lives in terms of leadership and relationships. As leaders gain clarity about who they are and where they are headed, they can live a whole life of purpose and growth.

T
wo-lifetime friends who share fastpaced careers, active families and enough stress to bring down a giant are now part of the sandwich generation caring for kids and parents simultaneously. So, what can reset one’s mindset and lifestyle faster than stopping to smell the eucalyptus during a wellness spa weekend retreat for two? Anne and I took nearly a year to get this real-life pause on the calendar, and only the commitment of two friends kept us from canceling the trip. We calendared the dates, made provisions for our families, scheduled time off work and just did it. We packed our yoga mats, reusable water bottles and sun hats and journeyed to Westlake Village, a little town outside of Malibu, Calif. with views of the Santa Monica Mountains. We agreed that we’d embrace all this weekend could offer and kept an open mind to get out of our comfort zones and experience everything. It all started with our wellness coordinator, who focused on our individual goals to personalize our time at the Center for Health & Wellbeing on property at Four Seasons
Westlake Village. Sarah helped create our ideal stay, complete with fitness classes, assessments and one-on-one consultations led by experts committed to our wellness journey. Of course, that also included healthy meals and time in the world-class spa. There are options as to how to program your stay. Some guests opt for group retreats, some are locals with memberships, and then there was the two of us that packed a lot of healthy, good stuff into three days on a wellness spa weekend. Upon arrival, we toured the facilities, got our itineraries and found spots at the beautiful spa pool, where we unwound from our trip and enjoyed a lovely lunch. An hour later, we were off to our assessments—I tested my VO2 max to determine at what heart rate I should work out for optimal results. Anne stepped into the BodPod for a body composition analysis. Once we determined we were not as fit as when we were 20, but not bad for today, we moved on to a sound bath meditation class—one of the available wellness electives—before dinner.

Knowing that our high school bodies had not completely given up on us, we fine-dined our way through a decadent yet healthy menu at Four Seasons Westlake Village’s Coin & Candor. Chef Jesus Medina offers health-conscious, wood-fired local dishes. We enjoyed octopus with charred serrano chili aioli and a wild mushroom truffle risotto. We also shared the striped bass with tomato mole and brussels sprout leaves and finished with an apple tarte tatin because, hey, we’ll be working out all day tomorrow. And indeed, tomorrow came too fast. We ran out of our room like executives late for a meeting with a coffee to go. We had an 8 a.m. meeting with Jenny, our fitness coach and soon-to-be tai chi instructor, who spent an hour teaching us stretching exercises for people who sit at desks and then a great express workout for women who want to be their flexible, active best. An hour later, Jenny handled us off to Rod, who had an obstacle course set up on the event lawn of the resort. There, we met a fitness member who worked out with us on a circuit-training loop that made us remember why you eat breakfast in the morning. As the day went on, we had life strategies coaching, where we talked about stress-reducing methods, a session on intuition and some marvelous wellness spa appointments followed by time in the spa steam room, sauna and jacuzzi. Oh, and we shopped at the spa boutique and purchased some fun finds. (I love spa boutiques!) Keeping up with our wellness weekend, we thought it healthy to sit by the pool at sunset and enjoy some friend time and a glass of rosé before heading to dinner. While we again dined at Coin & Candor, we enjoyed entirely different selections, noting the chef ’s versatility.

On our third day, we again met up with Jenny, a patient tai chi instructor with graceful movements. She explained the benefits of the practice, and honestly, this was one of the big takeaways from the trip— more tai chi, please. Both energizing and relaxing, tai chi compels you to calm your mind and be present and active in almost every muscle in your body. We loved it, and I loved gaining a greater understanding of the practice. It resonated with me big time. We indulged in a yummy Saturday brunch and then left the property for a local hike. Even though it took us an hour to reach the trailhead, we hiked the path and returned to the Four Seasons Westlake Village with 20,500 steps achieved. It’s a good reminder that you can do anything with the support of a good friend. Plus, we talked the whole way. Pool time was in order next, and our wellness coordinator booked us a lovely private cabana to soak up the sun and reminisce about our amazing three days together. We walked into town that night—keeping the wellness theme going—for sushi and another sunset. By morning, we were feeling oh, so relaxed, rejuvenated and refreshed. We had done it! We quieted the noise, engaged in lots of healthy activities and gained some new tools we’d take home with us and make part of our lives, going forward with renewed energy and purpose. I’d like to end this story by telling you that Anne’s plane was not canceled and that we didn’t race to get her to an alternative airport to get her home. But, alas, we did it with a calm perspective and knowing that we learned strategies over the last three days that would remind us that this alone will not take us out of a Zen state. We realized that we could handle what life hands us—and wasn’t that part of what we were to learn this weekend? ICONICLIFE.COM

Looking to improve the air quality in your home? Check out the best house plants to clear the air.
By ICONIC LIFE
Y
ou may love plants in your home as a decorative element because plants enhance the warmth and ambiance of a room. Architects, designers and builders alike know the appeal of bringing “the outside in” and designing spaces to bring that natural element into your home. Did you know that plants do much more than improve the aesthetic appeal of your indoor environment? They will purify the air inside your home so you and your family can thrive in a healthy environment. Shockingly, the air inside your home is between two to five times more polluted than the air outside, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Burning fireplaces, candles, old ductwork and/or molds can make indoor air quality up to 100 times more toxic than outside air.
HOW TOXINS GET TRAPPED INSIDE YOUR HOME In the late 1960s, Dr. B.C. “Bill” Wolverton, an environmental scientist and researcher for NASA, conducted studies about the ability of plants to eradicate toxins. In 1973, Wolverton discovered 107 VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) inside the Skylab Space Station.
In 2016, CNN reported that Dr. Vadoud Niri, a chemistry professor at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Oswego, led a team of researchers and found the best houseplants for air quality that remove VOCs from the air. VOCs are found in everyday household products like carpeting, cleaning supplies, any fabrics that were commercially dry cleaned, furniture, laminate flooring, printers, paint and other household products that we all use regularly. Plants use carbon dioxide in the way we use oxygen. When you have plants in your home, they take in carbon dioxide and emit oxygen, which serves as Mother Nature’s air purifier. Here are some of the best houseplants to improve air quality inside your home.

SPIDER PLANT
Spider plants are both fun and easy to grow. You’ll find them in solid green or varieties of green and white leaves. Spider plants produce new plants that grow off long stems from the mother plant. Those baby plants can be propagated in water or soil. Spider plants absorb more than 90 percent of Xylene from fuels, and p-Xylene from rubber and plastic products. It can also absorb as much as 90 percent of the carbon monoxide and formaldehyde toxins that many household products release. The spider plant is another great houseplant for animal lovers because it isn’t toxic to animals. Spider plants tolerate most growing conditions. The most popular and practical way to grow it is hanging baskets. Give them bright light during the day and water them when the soil is dry.
SANSEVIERIA
Commonly known as the Snake Plant, Sansevieria is also a succulent. It is effective at removing benzene, formaldehyde, toluene, trichloroethylene, and xylene from the air. It is unusual in that it releases oxygen at night. Consequently, it can improve your quality of sleep. If you have sleeping trouble, consider putting a snake plant in your bedroom, especially on the nightstand next to your bed. It can be especially helpful for people who have breathing difficulties, considering it’s another effective house plant for improved air quality. Snake plants tolerate low light and can go for extended periods without water.

ENGLISH IVY
Beautiful as a groundcover or a house plant, English ivy is a classically elegant choice that is also best for removing harmful chemicals found in the home to improve air quality. It can grow in full shade or full sun, can be trained into shapes and with proper care is likely to survive for several years. English Ivy plants prefer an evenly moist environment. Water the plants freely during growth. Keep English Ivy house plants moist in the winter. Spraying English Ivy with soft water weekly will help prevent spider mites from infesting.
ALOE VERA
Aloe Vera is a succulent, which means the plant holds water in its leaves. Those fleshy leaves contain the gel that is often used in healthcare products to treat burns and skin abrasions. It removes benzene and formaldehyde from the air, making it one of the best houseplants for improving air quality. Those toxins are found in detergents, flooring finishes, laminate flooring and varnish. Place in a window where it can get direct sunlight. LED grow lights can simulate sunlight in the absence of direct sun. Succulents like Aloe Vera have very shallow roots, so avoid overwatering the plant. It’s always better to underwater a succulent.
JADE PLANT
The Jade plant is another succulent plant that serves as a fantastic houseplant for improving air quality. It is easy to recognize because of its dark green leaves that are narrow at the base. Jade absorbs toluene, which comes from cars, gasoline, heating oil, kerosene, lacquers and paints. Jade is a succulent that needs bright light and soil that drains well. It is easy to grow, and you can keep it in the same pot for many years because it doesn’t mind being root-bound. Jade will survive for weeks without water, so it’s the ideal plant for beginners and those who don’t want to grow high-maintenance plants.

ow I eat has evolved over time, and I’ve become attached to eating at home because I can control all the ingredients that go into my food. I prefer all-organic, clean ingredients, grass-fed beef, air-chilled chicken, soy/corn-free free-range organic eggs and the healthiest dairy I can get my hands on. I’m truly thoughtful about what I eat and where I dine. That’s why I was elated when Chef Stacey Weber opened a charming, local restaurant that embraces eating clean, locally sourced ingredients thoughtfully curated into delicious dishes. I first met Weber a few years ago when her team suggested we connect on my podcast. It was full of respect the first moment we spoke. At the time, she was coming off a stint as Larry Fitzgerald Jr.’s personal chef, making nutritious, healthy meals for one of America’s greatest wide receivers in the NFL. Her health-minded perspective fueled her desire to cook for the community, and she opened EAT by Stacey Weber, which offers freshly prepared meals. The idea of EAT by Stacey Weber was based on her passion for clean ingredients. Through weekly meal delivery or grab-and-go, she served her new tribe. “So many people are talking about clean eating today; I was doing it 20 years ago,” Weber says. While it was never her aspiration to open a restaurant, her commitment to her passion for healthy dining inspired her to start researching the concept for Amelia’s by EAT, named after Weber’s grandmother. The result is a modern and comfortable local eatery with counter service, table service, graband-go and patio dining with an all-day menu including BYOB (build your own board) nosh board, scratch-made cocktails and a selection of unfiltered and organic wines selected by Weber herself. Of course, the menu includes items her clients have come to love, like the always-popular chicken enchilada and the no-noodle lasagna. In the morning, a line runs out the door for the house-made gluten-free bakery items, the daily breakfast burrito and chemical-free, organic coffee. Lunch is a lively affair with guests inside and out at this community gathering place, and dinner takes on its own moody vibe…the perfect way to end a day.

“Thoughtful care in the kitchen begins with thoughtful care at the source. We take pride in prioritizing relationships with local farmers and artisan growers, ensuring that each bite not only tantalizes your taste buds but also contributes to the well-being of our neighbors and the vitality of our local economy,” Weber says. My team and I dined at Amelia’s by EAT recently, and we’re already regulars. First and foremost, Weber is doing everything right. She’s sourcing the best organic ingredients locally; all the meat is grass-fed, the salmon is linecaught, and the bacon is nitrate-free. The baked items and craft cocktails are scratch-made. Almost everything is gluten-free, and the dairy is sourced from local farms with grass-fed cows or goats on an organic diet. Her team is busy every day making almost everything in-house: house-made pickles, housemade coffee syrups and house-made organic corn tortillas grace the menu. Even the water cups are stainless steel to ensure your table water is healthy and purified beyond what you usually get at a restaurant. So, what did we order? We started with a beautiful charcuterie board with organic cheeses, a super intense blue cheese we loved, house-made sweet almonds and gluten-free seeded crackers. The flavors were fresh, and the board was a lovely starter. To complement the charcuterie board, we sampled orange wine, an unfiltered organic option we all wanted to taste. The bold flavor was a nice pairing with the robust cheeses. For dinner, we created two boards to share: the Italian board and another made up of favorites. On the Italian board, we had the gluten-free zucchini lasagna that was dripping with cheese and packed with flavor. With that, we had homemade focaccia bread and organic broccolini. The second board had the best, sweetest, organic heirloom carrots we’ve tasted, the famous chicken and rice enchilada and organic roasted sweet potato slices. We ended the evening with a sample plate of sweet treats and a promise to return. If you care about what you eat, Amelia’s by EAT cares, too.

Daily Dozen for Optimal Aging 68

These 12 simple steps from Lifescape Medical’s Dr. Susan Wilder can profoundly impact how well you age and how long you live. By Susan Wilder, MD, IFMCP
I
am passionate about living an optimally healthy life, and I believe in transformative care that strives to make chronic disease obsolete. We have a way to go.
The average American spends the last decade or so of their lives in what I call the 4 D’s: diseased, depressed, disabled or demented. Americans rank 83rd globally for healthy life expectancy. How is that possible in one of the greatest nations in the world? Here’s the good news…most chronic disease, disability and 90 percent of dementia is preventable without expensive supplements, prescribed drugs or inconvenient interventions. Here are my lifestyle hacks to turn old age into the golden age with energy, mobility and mental wellness. I’ve based this on my more than 35 years as a medical professional and Dr. Kara Fitzgerald’s aging deceleration book Younger You: Reduce Your Bio Age and Live Longer, Better. If you want to make a difference in your life, let’s go! If you want to get a baseline to understand where you stand today before you make any changes, you can assess your “biologic age” with a test like the one that we use from Tru Diagnostic, that helps you understand your pace of aging based on epigenetic DNA methylation patterns. Here are my Daily Dozen:

1. EAT MORE PLANTS!
A recent Harvard study shows we could save 6 million lives globally just by shifting to a more plant-based diet. Eat organic as much as possible. • 2 cups organic leafy greens: 1 cup chopped or 4 ounces of organic green juice. • 1 cup colorful veggies: eat the whole rainbow daily; especially beets. • 1 cup cruciferous veggies: eat 2 cups if taking hormones or hormonal cancer risk. • 2 whole fruits, especially berries. Prioritize methylation superfoods from my list below. There are 12 veggies referred to as the “dirty dozen,” and they represent the most contaminated produce. If you’re eating organically sometimes, these are the ones to make sure you purchase from the organic section. These include strawberries, greens, blueberries, spinach, pears, apples, peaches, nectarines, grapes, peppers, cherries and green beans.
2. FERMENTED IS FABULOUS
Eat fermented food daily for a healthy microbiome, that means gut health. You can have 4 to 8 ounces of organic kefir or yogurt or 2 tablespoons to ¼ cup of fermented organic veggies, like sauerkraut, beets or pickles.
3. OPTIMIZE YOUR PROTEIN
We suggest eating 25 to 30 grams of protein three to four times a day. You can get that from legumes, tofu, nuts, fish, eggs, dairy, poultry, meats and liver. I prefer raw nuts to roasted; I like free-range, corn-free poultry; and grass-fed, hormone-free meats.
EAT THREE SUPERFOODS A DAY These superfoods provide methylation, which means detoxification, aging deceleration and cancer prevention.
GREEN TEA TURMERIC/CURCUMIN BLUEBERRIES/ALL BERRIES ROSEMARY CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES BEETS ORGANIC OMEGA 3 EGGS ORGANIC GRASS-FED LIVER SEEDS (Sunflower/Pumpkin/Flax/ Chia/Hemp) WILD-CAUGHT SALMON
4. YOU WON’T GET FAT ON FAT
Make sure to have 1 to 2 tablespoons of healthy fats. Those come from extra virgin olive oil, avocados, olives, beef tallow and ghee. The best-rated olive oil brands in 2023 were Life Extension California Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil with very high polyphenols, Lucini Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil and California Olive Ranch extra virgin olive oil everyday blend. A handful of nuts and seeds or 2 tablespoons of organic nut or seed butter will do the job as well.
SHIITAKE MUSHROOMS (Also Reishi, Chaga, Lion’s Mane) DARK LEAFY GREENS
ICONICLIFE.COM
71
5. GO WITH GRAINS
Unless you’ve got a gluten intolerance/allergy or an inflammatory condition, we suggest 2 to 3 servings of healthy, organic whole grains, like oats, whole wheat, buckwheat, quinoa, legumes or couscous.
6. DRINK WATER
You hear this all the time, and that’s because water has so many benefits. Dehydration is as dangerous as driving under the influence. Hydrate with at least 80 ounces of fluids within 10 hours of waking up for brain, heart, kidney, liver and cellular health. It’s best to start your day by front-loading 16 ounces of water when you wake up before you have your first cup of coffee. Add 24 ounces per hour of exercise (double if hot or doing endurance exercise.)
7. GET MOVING!
This can take so many forms. I want to see my mobile clients moving 20 to 45 minutes daily. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) exercise is best, plus strength training 2 to 3 times a week and some form of balance exercise. I have some patients who set a daily alarm to move and stretch each hour. I have some patients who schedule these workouts on their calendars. Remember that walking your furry friend counts. However you do it, get moving daily
8. CATCH YOUR ZZZZZ
I heard a new phrase that not sleeping is the new smoking. While that is hard to really quantify as a medical profession, the theme here is that not sleeping has a big impact on your health. I want to see you sleeping 7 to 8 hours a night uninterrupted. If you are waking tired, daytime dozing, snoring or sleeping with lapses in breathing, get checked for sleep apnea.

9. YOU GOTTA HAVE FRIENDS
According to the Blue Zones, four regions around the world boast people living to the oldest ages. Key to their longevity is social connection. Research consistently demonstrates that people with strong social connections tend to live longer than those who are socially isolated. By investing in social connection, you can experience improved mental well-being, better physical health, and a greater sense of fulfillment in your life. It’s important to stay engaged and useful.
10. NEVER STOP LEARNING
Keep your brain active by learning new things. Challenge your brain with activities that rely on logic, math and visuospatial skills like crossword puzzles, Sudoku games, puzzles, and other games that promote mental gymnastics. These types of games require multiple cognitive abilities, which challenges your brain and improves processing speed and memory.
11. DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT
Manage stress in a healthy way. I suggest meditating 15 to 20 minutes a day. Practice mindfulness or just breathe 10 deep breaths daily. Use a cyclic sighing technique: in through the nose, sigh out. Doing this for 2 minutes daily is proven most for reducing stress. Do this simultaneously as you get up and stretch during the day.
Left page: Photography by Mark Sacro, Wardrobe: Pretty Please Boutique
12. LESS WINE-ING
Minimize alcohol to one drink per week for optimal slowest aging. Cease drinking if you have a memory or cancer risk. Have alternatives ready to go for social situations or times when you habitually reach for a drink.

sk anyone who runs a brush through their hair and finds a clump of strands on the ground, and they will probably agree that hair loss is an emotional issue. No matter your age or gender, losing your hair can be deeply personal. In the past, there wasn’t much that could be done, but today, companies like National Hair Loss Medical Aesthetics (NHLMA) offer hope and hair to those who are losing theirs.
Worldwide, about 35 million men and 21 million women are dealing with hair loss. By age 35, 40 percent of men are losing some hair; by age 80, it jumps to 70 percent. By age 60, 80 percent of women have experienced some hair loss.
NATIONAL HAIR LOSS HOPE
Hair loss has many causes, including genetics, stress and environmental factors. The first step in solving the problem is getting to the root cause.
“Your scalp is like soil. Many people get new plants, but unless they’re planted in good soil, they won’t thrive. The same is true for your hair. If you don’t fix the root cause of your hair loss, your hair will not rebound,” says Carly Klein, founder of Scottsdale-based NHLMA. “There are many ways in which we can prevent hair loss and reverse the thinning. Our difference is first addressing the cause, then working on the hair.”

Hair loss due to all kinds of underlying reasons can be treated. The team works with clients who struggle with genetic hair loss, disease-induced hair loss, including cancer and COVID-19 and unexplained hair loss.
DETERMINING THE CAUSE
NHLMA has a high client success rate due to its focus on understanding the cause of hair loss. “At NHLMA, we have consistently demonstrated our commitment to advancing the field of hair loss treatment and research,” Klein says. “Our exceptional expertise and cutting-edge technology have made us the go-to center for conducting clinical trials in the realm of hair loss.” Each client starts with a consultation and a microscopic evaluation to help determine the amount of inflammation in the body. Epigenetic Hair Follicle Analysis is the next step, this is done by getting samples of DNA by extracting four hair follicles from the back of your head or eyebrows. This reveals more than blood work since the hair holds information about what’s happening inside the body for the past 90 days. The analysis may reveal vitamin deficiencies, environmental influences, food intolerances and health of the gut and cardiovascular systems. Any of these factors can impact hair loss and hair growth.
PRESCRIPTION LASER
Laser treatment is the first FDA-approved method to stop hair loss in women and the second to stop hair loss in men. Medical-grade lasers are 98 percent effective in preventing hair loss and helping fine hair grow thicker. “We always want to stop the loss before we use clinical treatments to boost hair growth,” Klein explains. Once the loss is under control, other methods are used to regrow the hair.
STEM CELL THERAPY
NHLMA was one of the first places in the country to apply stem cell therapy to hair rejuvenation.

Stem cell therapy uses nano-sized vesicles, which contain proteins and biomolecules that signal cells to communicate and influence the cells on what they need to do. In this case, they signal the body to start growing hair. Stem cells can be harvested from your own body or a donor. NHLMA was the site of three clinical trials on extracting vesicles for use on the scalp and creating protocols for using it to grow hair. Based on the data and tracking of all types of hair loss, stem cell therapy is showing excellent initial results.
PRP
Platelet-rich plasma injections (PRP) use the patient’s blood cells to prevent hair loss and promote new hair growth. While PRP is a common practice, it often has minimal results because the treatment used is a cosmetic, not therapeutic, protocol. “NHLMA utilizes an additional method to isolate extracellular vesicles, which carry messages to your cells on what to do and where to go. It also holds a vast amount of growth factors,” Klein explains. For many patients, NHLMA will use PRP in conjunction with medical microneedling. The microneedling process causes up to a million microtraumas on the scalp. These microtraumas ensure that the body releases growth hormones targeted to the scalp to promote hair growth.
CUSTOM TOPICALS
If you’re one of the millions struggling with hair loss, the innovative treatments at NHLMA can help you stop hair loss, restore hair growth and, most importantly, improve how you feel when you look in the mirror.

NHLMA takes topical creams and ointments beyond the over-the-counter options you can grab at the drugstore. Based on your unique hair loss situation, a custom-formulated blend of niacinamide or finasteride with minoxidil is created. These topicals can be used on men or women with genetic causes of hair loss and offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Additionally, topicals can help with stress- or COVID-19related hair loss.

f you’re looking for a wellness escape for the mind, body and spirit, the green o, an adults-only boutique resort on a private section of the Montana ranch property, Paws Up, is a retreat like no other. The green o is modern personified—12 design-forward glass cabins invite guests to drink in the forest views. Although several styles exist, including the Green Haus, with its living roof, my favorite is the Tree Haus. A reimagined sanctuary, Tree Haus is a two-story cabin perched 23 feet in the air. A glass spiral staircase leads to a romantic bedroom suite with a large soaking tub. Two terraces and an outdoor hot tub allow guests to savor the scenery and fresh air. Other luxury lodging includes the Green Haus, which features a skylight above the bed to stargaze with your sweetie. The architecture of Round Haus consists of beautiful curves, providing 180-degree views of the Montana wilderness. The Light Haus delights guests with a private hot tub, two fireplaces and skylights. While the green o name is a nod to the town of Greenough, where the resort is located, it also reflects its sustainability practices. Site selection for each house ensured that no trees were cut down, and building practices were designed to showcase the beauty of the surrounding forest.

With only 12 homes, the green o offers an abundance of privacy, but should you want to socialize, head over to the Social Haus. The contemporary glass lodge features a lounge and open-kitchen-concept gourmet restaurant helmed by Executive Chef Brandon Cunningham and Pastry Chef Krystle Swenson. The 24-person restaurant is exclusive to the green o guests and is focused on local, sustainable ingredients such as cherries, wild chamomile, elk, beef, and unexpected flavors like Douglas fir spring tips. The centerpiece of the kitchen is its live-fire cooking. The chef often rotates the menu and can cater to guests’ dietary needs and requests. While all the green o facilities are restricted to its guests on the ranch, anyone staying at the green o can enjoy all the activities and amenities of Paws Up Resort. The easiest way to get around the 60-square-mile property is either by mountain bikes or the Lexus hybrid SUV that comes with each house. With the wealth of activities such as horseback adventures, fly fishing adventures, trail and hot air balloon adventures, my favorite part of the trip is the quiet simplicity. I enjoyed being in my cabin, staring at the wide-open, beautiful, untamed countryside and not hearing cars, people, or noise. Living in a city, I realize how soothing and restorative sheer quiet and nature can be.

Blue ZONES The people who live the longest live in these four parts of the world. By Dena Roché Photography by David McLain Illustrations by Jaclyn Threadgill

hat do Ilkaria, Greece; Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; and Nicoya, Costa Rica, have in common? They are the four areas of the planet where a high portion of the population lives to 100 or more. Dubbed “The Blue Zones” by National Geographic researcher Dan Buettner, these places may hold the secret to longevity for the rest of us. Buettner, an adventure junkie who has three Guinness World Records, stumbled upon the concept of Blue Zones when he owned a company that solved ancient mysteries. Fresh off exploring why the Mayan civilization collapsed, he decided to tackle finding the Fountain of Youth. The trail led to Okinawa, which holds the longest life expectancy in the world.

Intrigued by what he discovered, Buettner dispatched a team of researchers to parse population data to see if similar areas existed. They found four, and Buettner went off to investigate Blue Zones. One of his most significant discoveries was that satisfaction and happiness, which influence longevity, had nothing to do with money, status or possessions—but instead were all about simple things like a conversation with a friend, doing work by hand and enjoying simple foods. “Being in a good, happy partnership lowers mortality by 50 percent,” Buettner says. “By far the most powerful thing you can do to live longer is to find the right partner and then pour your efforts into that relationship instead of fad diets and CrossFit.” Another key factor to longevity is rooted in relationships with community and friends. All Blue Zones have populations with strong ties to a faith-based or spiritual community and a focus on socialization. Additionally, longevity decreases once the standard American diet becomes prevalent in a population. According to Buettner, the American way of eating knocks six to eight years off our lives. Instead, Blue Zones use nutrition for longevity. Regardless of what plant-based foods you enjoy, consuming one or two glasses of wine daily is the preferred pairing for longevity in Blue Zone populations.

The culture within Blue Zones also has built-in stress busters. Okinawans take a few moments each day to remember their ancestors; Adventists pray; Ikarians nap, and Sardinians do happy hour. Find what relaxes you, whether it’s yoga, meditation or a bubble bath—and then do more of it. “According to a Gallup survey, 70 percent of us don’t find our purpose in our jobs,” Buettner remarks. “But now, many of us can reassess what we would be doing if we lost a job. The economy will recover. Now is the time to determine what job speaks to your heart and could help you live your purpose.” Another epiphany Buettner had while studying the Blue Zones was that the people in these areas do not have a better understanding of aging or more discipline than the rest of us—their culture and lifestyle promote wellness. A lifestyle that encourages longevity is one where we aren’t sitting in front of a computer eight hours a day, nor is it one where the only exercise we get is running on a treadmill at a gym. What people in the Blue Zones had in common was that their lives encouraged movement naturally, and burning calories was not the primary goal. The more you can add movement into your day, the better. Walk to your coffee shop, play with your kids, or hike with a friend. While there is no literal Fountain of Youth, it might exist if you embrace the Blue Zone lifestyle.
