Speaking of dressing well, this issue marks the debut of an important relationship with guest stylist and top men’s fashion designer Mark Pomerantz. We were honored to have a celebrity mistress of ceremonies, Catherine Anaya, on stage, who elegantly took our event to the next level. A big thank you to Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts technicians, directors and event staff for working with us to produce a show that I am really proud of ! I’m so grateful for my team, who impressed me beyond words. Each and every one of them stepped up in a big 48

It was indeed a grand night and the culmination of a yearlong journey to create an event that our design community deserves. Not only was it a spectacular night, it was an awards competition with integrity. I am over-the-moon excited about how it all went! A big thank you to all of you and to our courageous presenters who said yes to giving awards on stage in a new venue, in a new way. You all crushed it! Congratulations to all the well deserving, top Arizona designers, who earned an award at this special event.
way to make sure no detail was missed and that we delivered a near-flawless experience. The weeks leading up to an event of this magnitude can be like a pressure cooker, and my cheerful, always-enthusiastic, can-do team was an example of grace under fire. For years, awards programs have left me wanting more: more glamour, more excitement, more celebration. And I’ve felt there is room for improvement. Awards shouldn’t be given out in a preferential, biased way by people who know less about design than the potential recipients of the awards. Speaking of other competitions, I find it interesting for editors, realtors and event sponsors to be judges…but I don’t find it one bit credible. A real design competition is judged blind by members of the design community, by judges with impressive backgrounds worthy of judging the incredible talent put in front of them. Our awards competition was NOT a “gimme.” It was a tough competition. Being friends or clients of Renee didn’t earn you points (though I love you all, I wasn’t a judge), and I don’t think you want it that way either. The greatest compliment is to be fairly judged by a jury of peers in a challenging competition that means something when you get an award. We had almost 200 entries in our competition, that means that every level of award has great meaning…to be in the top three Arizona designers of each category is an impressive feat. I had two themes I wanted to express on Saturday night. First, we are a fantastically collaborative design community, and that’s unique to our market. My personal goal is to continue to connect us all in a way we’ve never been connected and elevate our community by putting people together, promoting great work and encouraging us all to be our very best. Next, I wanted to make a point that awards should mean something. Pay-for-play awards are embarrassing; long, boring, disorganized award ceremonies don’t honor the award winners; and I won’t be a part of that. I decided a year ago that I was done watching design awards from the sidelines…produced with low standards. If these words feel strong, know my passion for honoring all of you is stronger. I had a blast celebrating with you and the design community and this is only the beginning. We’ll launch ICONIC Design Awards 2024 next February when we open the entry portal. Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 28, 2024 when we will celebrate together once again and see what a difference a year makes. From the bottom of my heart, I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with all of you and call you my friends. I couldn’t be more excited to be right here, right now. ICONICLIFE.COM

ew names shine as brightly as Sam Fox’s in culinary innovation and upscale dining. Known for his boundless creativity and unwavering commitment to exceptional hospitality, Fox has etched his name into the history books of fine dining.
While his restaurant empire, Fox Restaurant Concepts, has left an indelible mark on the culinary landscape, he’s now set his sights on a new venture that promises to redefine luxury hospitality in the Phoenix area: The Global Ambassador hotel.
FROM FAMILY TABLES TO CULINARY STARDOM
During the 1970s, Fox immersed himself in the industry by rolling up his sleeves, working in kitchens, and serving tables at his parents’ restaurants in Tucson, Ariz. The seed of culinary passion was firmly planted in him, and it didn’t take long for it to flourish. Remarkably, Fox opened his first restaurant, Wildflower, in 1998. He was just 21. This was merely the first step in an illustrious career. Yet, beneath the layers of achievement and acclaim, Fox remains a man profoundly enamored with the world of gastronomy. Inspiration finds him in the most unexpected places—an ingredient, a fleeting word or

even a captivating new acquaintance. Each spark of inspiration is artfully transformed into culinary concepts that tell compelling stories; each dish is a chapter in a remarkable gastronomic narrative. “My inspiration comes from just living life every single day,” Fox explains when he sat down with ICONIC LIFE publisher Renee Dee for a chat. “It could be a meal that I had, it could be a traveling experience, it could be an interaction with some people. It could be reading, a word, food, a glass of wine, architecture or a building. I grab it from everywhere and it’s constant, and it keeps me up at night sometimes, but you know, I love it, and I’m very fortunate that I get to keep creating all the time.”
THE NEXT CHAPTER
After a quarter-century of innovation, Fox has decided to take his passion for food and hospitality to new heights. He embarked on a project a decade in the making—The Global Ambassador, his first foray into the world of luxury hotels. With his impeccable track record, there’s no doubt this hotel will be a jewel in the crown of Phoenix’s hospitality scene. The hotel will benefit from the culinary prowess of Food Network regular Eric Kim Haugen, who previously showcased his culinary talents in the menu for The Twelve Thirty Club in Nashville. Together, they will spearhead the hotel’s culinary creativity, promising an unforgettable dining experience that reflects Fox’s signature blend of taste, innovation and playful charm. Each of the 141 meticulously designed rooms is a testament to Fox’s dedication to anticipating and meeting every guest’s needs. Fox turned to longtime friend and successful artist Michael Carson, represented by Bonner David Galleries in Scottsdale, to provide stunning, original artwork in each guest room. Fox says he aimed for a design that feels residential in nature, a timeless elegance reminiscent of Europe. It’s a place where modern touches harmoniously coexist with the building’s older character, creating an architectural masterpiece that he hopes will make him proud for years to come. “I wanted something that when I drove by 20 years from now, I felt really proud of the architecture,” he says.

hether you’re looking for a unique place to have your mid-day mimosa and take in the sight of private jets in motion or want to catch a quick bite before you take off yourself, Volanti restaurant offers the best seat for the show. Volanti opened in 2018 with Dee Maza and her daughter Alec Maza—the powerhouse duo behind the eatery—at the helm. Dee Maza has more than 30 years of experience in the food and restaurant industry. Their goal is to make sure their clients receive first-class, personalized experiences.

Offering a “simple, classic, and world inspired” dining experience, this hidden gem is located on the second level of the Scottsdale Aviation business center. Its floor-toceiling windows blend the indoor space with the open-air patio, which cantilevers over the tarmac. Whether inside or out, you can soak up the views of awe-inspiring aircrafts and silhouettes of the distant mountains. If the view alone isn’t enough to pique your interest, the elevated menu should. The Hundred Dollar Hamburger, which includes a bottle of Veuve 375 champagne, parmesan truffle fries and caviar, feels like you’re dining first class. The Wild Mushroom King Prawn Pasta, made
of grilled jumbo shrimp, tagliatelle pasta, chipotle spicy cream sauce, wild mushroom, tomato, avocado, and queso fresco, will ignite your taste buds. Recently, I had the opportunity to grab lunch at Volanti. I started with the Farmers Market Crudité, a platter of hummus topped with feta cheese and paired with grilled pita points, yellow and orange carrots, and garnished with a watermelon radish. The dish was well blended, flavorful and the perfect selection to ease my hunger without filling me up. To keep things light, I ordered the Mahi Mahi Tacos, a trio of baseball-size tortillas filled with blackened mahi mahi and topped with a chopped citrus Mexican slaw and chipotle aioli. I noted the classic espresso martini on the menu to experience when I return for happy hour. The restaurant offers more than just a dining experience. The founders also host private events in the restaurant’s hangar and private helicopter tours over the valley paired with three-course meals. Volanti welcomes all, whether you want to relax on the patio with a cocktail and watch the runway in action or indulge in a thrilling helicopter experience. This destination takes a simple dining moment to new heights.

E
ddy Doumas, founder of TOWN Studio and TOWNhouse, started his career as an assistant bookkeeper in Detroit more than three decades ago. With a plethora of books about art and culture at his disposal, he immersed himself into the community of design, learning about history, art and designers from around the world. He quickly developed a love and appreciation for the design process, and thus, the idea for his passion project, TOWNhouse was born. The project is a showroom in Scottsdale filled with unique furniture and art from various periods and regions amalgamated in one space. The making of TOWNhouse has been in the works for 30 years and finally came to life this past September. TOWNhouse celebrates the core aspects of design and aims to dig deeper than just the product. “Regardless of price point, there is a spirit to the way things are designed,” Doumas explains. “I think so much about how you see people ignoring the fact that they’ve been inspired by something. I’m trying to pay tribute to where the spirit of the design came from. I’m trying to make a point that everything influences us.” The showroom features designs inspired by prominent and emerging artists from various periods and regions worldwide. Doumas wants to share how design is connected across the globe. “You can trace something as simple as a chair leg and see that design happening in India at the same time it’s happening in Paris,” Doumas remarks. “I find that kind of fascinating because the designers didn’t know each other, so the ‘how did that happen’ question goes back to the spirit of the design versus decorating.
“I really love flipping through art and architecture books, and I find the correlations fascinating. In our showroom, we have both contemporary art and true vintage furniture,” Doumas says, pointing out a pair of pub chairs from the 1920s. “TOWNhouse is a collection of art and furniture from throughout history and the world. It shows how we can blend it all in one space and proves there aren’t any rules with design. To me, being a good creator and designer is having the skill to blend things, and we are trying to do that to the extreme here.” TOWNhouse is a sanctuary that welcomes all, whether you are a designer, an avid art or design enthusiast or just someone who enjoys looking at unique pieces. Doumas says that he wants TOWNhouse to be a space where people from all walks of life can unite and celebrate design. “We want it to become a place where people can just hang out; they don’t necessarily have to buy,” he notes. “We could’ve done another showroom open only to the trade, but that’s not what we wanted to create. We wanted to create a space where it inspires and influences people. This is a space for anybody to come.” The idea of emergence is popular at TOWNhouse, where change is embraced, and a household name isn’t required to secure a spot in the showroom. TOWNhouse fosters new artists’ work and welcomes collaboration with upcoming and prominent designers. “We keep using the word emerging, which I like because it allows TOWNhouse to be fluid,” Sarah Roy, art advisor for TOWNhouse, says. “It’s not that we only work with one set of artists. You won’t see the same things in this showroom. We will feature different art forms, and the showroom will have a different design when somebody comes in.” ICONICLIFE.COM

he best accomplishments are often the ones created over time. It was nearly 30 years ago that Paul Jeffrey, founder of Paul Rene furniture in Phoenix, began his career as a designer of concept cars for Ford Motor Company. Today, Jeffrey is an inspiring creative and pioneer in the furniture design industry. The award-winning company recently presented The Paul Rene Kallos Collection at the acclaimed Bentley Gallery in Phoenix. Jeffrey says the collection captures what it means to be home. “This furniture line is our attempt to help make a house a home by redefining what home is,” he notes. “We all live in a house, but do we have a home? Home is a sacred place where we find peace, love and acceptance.”
The Kallos Collection utilizes the components of what the ancient Greeks believed beauty to consist of; symmetry, proportion and harmony. Kallos is a culmination of the beauty of physical appearance and virtue of the soul. It strives to evoke that feeling through unique shapes, colors and proportions. The new line features nine dining and living room pieces. “We decided 18 months ago that we were finally going to pull the trigger on the furniture line,” Jeffrey says. “A few months ago, a friend of mine who is a sculptor met Bentley Calverley, owner of Bentley Gallery. During their conversation, he mentioned that I was getting ready to open a showroom down the street from her. Calverley exclaimed: “I know Paul, and I love his work.” She further shared that she’d provide artwork for Paul Rene’s showroom down the street from the Bentley Gallery. “I was flattered that Bentley knew of Paul Rene Furniture. A few weeks later, I got the invitation to meet with her. Then, I got a call from her gallery manager that she would like to debut my furniture line in her gallery. I was floored by that invitation. In fact, it moved me.” Throughout Jeffrey’s career, he persevered and built his empire into what it is today. Great things aren’t built overnight, but “when magical things happen, it’s like a miracle,” he says. ICONICLIFE.COM

here’s no question that the world of wine is set on a foundation of sophistication and luxury. Kerr Cellars wine is a prime example of refinement and quality at the highest level. What started as a mission to raise money for breast cancer research blossomed into a distinguished winery with a goal of excellence and merit in every bottle. Cristie Kerr, LPGA golfer and founder of Kerr Cellars, fell in love with wine while on tour and visiting Napa Valley in 2000. Her passion for it grew stronger as she continued to travel around the world and indulge in wine from various countries and cultures, learning about the winemaking process and what separates a good glass of wine from a great one. “Being a professional golfer, you get to travel around the world,” Kerr says. “On tour, I was able to learn about wine from South America, France, Spain, Australia, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and almost to the farthest reaches of the world. Wherever I would go for golf tournaments, I’d learn about wine in the local environments and heightened my love for wine.” Kerr was inspired to embark on a wine journey herself to curate impeccable wine appreciated and recognized for its unparalleled quality. In 2007, Kerr teamed up with Suzanne Pride Bryan of Pride Mountain Vineyards to create Curvature Wines with the sole purpose of donating 100 percent of the proceeds towards breast cancer research.

“Being able to go to all these different places and see how people make their wine and how hard they work was really inspiring to me,” Kerr says. “ When the Pride family asked us to come out to their winery, my husband, Eric, and I couldn’t believe somebody showed interest in wanting to do this with us. In May 2008, Eric and I met with Suzanne Pride Bryan, and she almost tried to talk us out of getting into the wine business. “When I told her I wanted to make 100 cases of a very high-end Napa Valley Cabernet and give 100 percent of the proceeds to cancer research, she looked at me and said, ‘ I’m a breast cancer survivor.’ It gave me chills. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, and it shook our family to the core. When Suzanne found out I wanted to raise the money for research, it changed the direction this whole conversation was headed because it was not headed in a direction where we would have our start in wine prior.” Curvature Wines delivered beyond the initial goal, and the brand raised more than $350,000 for breast cancer research. “I was so surprised by Curvature’s success,” Kerr says. “ We raised so much that we created a grant for breast cancer research at Stanford Hospital from the profits.”
The continued success of Curvature Wines solidified confidence in Kerr about the viability of a for-profit wine brand, and thus, Kerr Cellars was created. Established in 2013, Kerr Cellars has grown to offer a variety of wines sourced from vineyards on the Sonoma Coast and Napa Valley and offer a wine club. Kerr Cellar’s philosophy hones in on the importance of quality over quantity, with all its wines receiving a score of more than 93 points. Its most esteemed wine is the 2019 Wappo Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, receiving 97 points from accredited wine critic James Suckling. “You don’t cut corners. You source from the best vineyards to make the best wine. You use the best glass, make a beautiful label, use the best capsules,” Kerr explains. “I didn’t name the wine after myself because, as a professional athlete, I wanted people to judge the wine for what it was (is), not for who I was.” With recognition from Wine Spectator and its wine poured for diplomats at the White House, Kerr Cellars has established a reputation for opulence and luxury. Kerr’s passion for wine not only changed the lives of others with her foundation, which Curvature continues to contribute to but also made her a driving force in the niche community of fine wine.

hilly winter weather means indulging in winter soups and stews. We’ve gathered some tips and recipes for making the most delicious and soul-comforting recipes. There is a wide variety of delicious soups and stews that can be made at home—from classic chicken noodle soup to regional favorites like gumbo and pozole. “There is something so wholesome and soothing about chicken soup,” Debbie Kornberg, cooking coach and owner of Spice + Leaf, says. “It has a calming effect, as it nourishes the body and soul.” One of the most comforting winter soups is classic chicken noodle, and Kornberg offers tips for making it at home. “Our secret ingredient is flanken, which is Yiddish for cut beef short ribs. We also add carrots, celery and leeks. You can elevate the humble chicken soup by adding spices like turmeric or dill. Just remember to skim the fat off the soup,” Kornberg says. We’re also huge fans of regional winter soups. Gumbo, which is derived from the West African word for okra, is a Southern favorite with many variations and influences, including French and Native American. Commander’s Palace, one of New Orleans’ most ICONIC restaurants, has served gumbo for many years. “My favorite thing about gumbo is the different interpretations you can have all over the Southern region,” Meg Bickford, executive chef at Commander’s Palace, says. “You can go to anyone’s home and find a different style of gumbo simmering on the stove. It’s amazing how each gumbo can be so different, but it’s what brings our communities together.” On the heartier side of winter soups is the French stew beef bourguignon. Chef Vincent Guerithault of Vincent on Camelback in Phoenix has been making this classic dish for decades. He serves several types of soup at his restaurant, including lobster bisque and butternut squash soup and offers advice for making soups at home. “Soups are a great way to use leftovers. Many soups are stock based, others are cream based and some are vegetable based,” Guerithault says. “If you think about a soup as having one of these bases, it’s easy to pick a direction and get creative with ingredients you have at home. Add a little paprika and a pinch of cayenne, and you can elevate a winter soup that’s served hot with a different kind of heat.” Keep reading for recipes to help you make some of our favorite winter soups, courtesy of these awesome chefs.

CHICKEN AND ANDOUILLE SAUSAGE GUMBO COMMANDER’S PALACE
INGREDIENTS ¼ cup vegetable oil 3 pounds chicken cut into medium sized pieces 1 pound Andouille sausage cut into 1/4” discs 2 tablespoon Creole seasoning 1 cup vegetable oil 1 ¼ cup flour 1 pound onion, medium diced ½ pound celery, medium diced ½ pound green bell pepper, medium diced ½ cup garlic, minced 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 tablespoon salt 4 bay leaves 3 quarts chicken stock 3 green onions, cut thin on the bias 1 tablespoon Filé powder Additional seasoning as needed

METHOD
Place a large, heavy soup pot on the stove over medium high heat for four minutes. Pour in ¼ cup of vegetable oil and swirl to coat the pan. Season the chicken on all sides with the Creole seasoning and brown in the pot in small batches to ensure it’s evenly browned on all sides. When the batches of browned chicken come out of the pot, let them rest on a plate or serving platter to catch any juices. When chicken is done browning, brown all the sausage and render for three to four minutes to release all the smoky fats into the pan. Remove the sausage and let it rest with the chicken. To the pot, add the additional one cup of oil and shake in the flour to start making the roux. Using a heavy, square nose wooden spoon, continually scrape all the brown pan drippings into the roux to begin the gumbo. Constantly stir over medium high heat until the roux becomes the shade of peanut butter. At this point, carefully stir in the onions, celery and green bell pepper and continually mix as the vegetables start to release steam and caramelize into the roux. When vegetables are wilted and slightly brown, stir in the minced garlic, cayenne, salt and bay leaves, and continue to cook for one minute until flavor is released and pungent. Slowly add the stock while stirring constantly so the gumbo starts to thicken without forming roux balls. When the stock is added and the sauce is smooth and shiny, add the chicken back to the pot and bring to a simmer. Skim the pot free of all fats and foam and reduce the heat to low. Continue cooking the gumbo by stirring occasionally and skimming as needed for 50 minutes. Add the sausage, green onions and any additional seasonings as necessary such as Louisiana hot sauce and Worcestershire. Remove the pot from the heat and shake in the file’ powder to finish. Optional to serve with rice.
BEEF BOURGUIGNON VINCENT GUERITHAULT
INGREDIENTS 1 pound beef top round cut into 1-inch cubes 1 cup red cooking wine 1 quart unsalted beef or veal stock 1 cup pearl onions 1 cup sliced portobello or cremini mushrooms 1 cup peeled and sliced carrots 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 teaspoon tomato paste 1 teaspoon all-purpose flour Pinch of dried thyme, dried rosemary, salt and pepper
METHOD
Season beef with thyme, rosemary, salt and pepper and sauté on high heat with olive oil until browned. Add wine and reduce for two to three minutes. Add beef or veal stock and cover with lid, simmering for at least two hours. Add pearl onions, carrot and mushrooms and return to low heat for 30 minutes. In a separate pan, melt butter and add flour on medium heat. Whisk while bubbling for 30 seconds. With a ladle, add one cup of stock liquid from simmering beef, whisking in to blend the flour. Add tomato paste and whisk. Pour thickened tomato stock mixture back into simmering beef pot and bring to a boil while stirring. Serve with mashed potatoes or gratin dauphinois.

TRADITIONAL CHICKEN SOUP DEBBIE KORNBERG
INGREDIENTS 1 whole chicken with skin 1 pound flanken (beef short rib) ½ pound carrots, cut into coins or use baby carrots and keep whole 2-3 celery stalks, chopped 2 onions, medium, chopped 2 leek stalks, cleaned and chopped Salt as needed 1 tablespoon dill leaves (optional) 1 teaspoon ground turmeric (optional) Vermicelli egg noodles (optional)
METHOD
Place the whole chicken and flanken into a large pot. Add enough cold water to cover the chicken. Slowly bring to a simmer and continue cooking for about two hours. After two hours, check chicken with a wooden spoon. If the chicken breaks easily, it is fully cooked. Otherwise, continue cooking chicken until it reaches this point. Next, using a slotted spoon, skim the fat off the top of the soup. You can discard it or save it in a jar and use as a cooking butter/oil alternative. Keep in the refrigerator. Add carrots, celery, onions and leeks to soup. Note: It is important to carefully clean each leek by slicing it down the middle and rinsing with water to ensure all of the soil has been removed. Optional: For additional yellow color and flavor, add turmeric to soup. For additional herbal notes, add dill. Continue to simmer for an additional 30 to 60 minutes. It is ready to serve but is best the next day when all of the flavors have settled in together. Remove the chicken, flanken and vegetables from the soup before serving. For extra comfort, add cooked vermicelli egg noodles to soup when ready to serve. Salt as needed.

id you know that building a home is considered the third most stressful life event? For custom homes, add 18 to 36 months of planning, design and construction, as well as common issues such as being over budget or behind schedule, requiring an overwhelming number of decisions and uncertainty of how to establish a budget that includes each aspect and amenity. One begins to wonder if it is possible to optimize this process to make it less risky, more rewarding and enjoyable. It’s a similar situation that Keith Galbut and his wife, Becky, faced when building their home and it’s what led to the founding of Advocate - Residential Construction Advisors. A practicing lawyer with a focus in business and construction advisory for approximately 20 years, Galbut knew all too well the challenges clients so often see in building their luxury dream homes, which led him and the Advocate team to develop a “master plan” to ensure a smoother, less risky, more cost effective and enjoyable process. “This process of building a luxury home should be an enjoyable experience that is fun, productive, creative and centered around camaraderie, teamwork, and high productivity,” Galbut says.
That might sound unattainable at first, but Advocate works to make it feasible with three overarching objectives: 1). Thoroughly determine the homeowner’s objectives; 2). Curate the right professional team for the clients’ objectives, budget, and plan; and 3). As Galbut says, the biggest reason challenges arise in homebuilding is due to losing sight of the original objectives: “The surest way to create disconnect between the earliest objectives and how things evolve is by not being disciplined to that original strategy.” He notes, “Building a custom home is certainly not for the faint of heart – it takes a lot of work from engineering,
design, and construction means and methods. When all these extraordinary minds are focused on the client’s best interest, some tremendous results are created.” By having Advocate at their side, the homeowner’s objectives are made the center of every team members’ goals, whether it be the designers, architects, or builders. This provides a focal point for the entire team to work from, goals for the team to work toward and allows Advocate to serve as a single point of contact and driver of the timeline. odernist spec homes in the Greater Phoenix area usually have “safe” designs—lots of white, a few glass walls and all the amenities that the real estate market demands.
However, a recently built 7,100-square-foot spec home in Paradise Valley pushes the envelope with its minimalist design and narrow market focus. Created by a talented team that includes architect Erik Peterson, interior designer Meredith Smyth and landscape designer Jeff Berghoff, the residence has been dubbed the “Museum House” for its airy simplicity. “This house definitely has a bachelor pad vibe to it,” says Peterson, principal of Scottsdale-based PHX Architecture. “Because my firm also has an office in Beverly Hills, we’re seeing a lot of that look in the Los Angeles area, which we thought would translate well to Arizona.” “This really isn’t designed as a family home,” echoes Smyth, who, along with Peterson, worked with developer Paramount Building Solutions and builder Sapanaro Development on the project. “I see the potential buyer as a super-entertainer, a super-host who’s well-traveled and throws large events.” Presented with an empty, flat lot in a long-developed neighborhood, Peterson noted that the corner lot had mountain views on two sides but next-door views of a neighbor’s tennis court. “To get the views and maintain privacy, we reversed the plan,” Peterson explains. “The backyard faces the street, and the free-standing casita provides privacy. You drive around to the front.” The architect designed an H-shaped plan for the house, with an entry courtyard flanked by the garage and primary suite wings and the backyard anchored by a zen-like swimming pool. “The central core, which is the kitchen, dining and living areas, are pretty much all glass,” Peterson says. “The glass walls and doors go up 13 feet high and have a very thin aluminum framing system that’s virtually invisible, which blurs the line between indoors and out. The natural light here is spectacular,” he says. Peterson went with bright white walls inside and out, something he could do in this setting as it was nestled into an established neighborhood and not on a desert lot, where blending into the landscape is necessary. Inside, Phoenix interior designer Smyth of Smyth House played up the simple architecture with a well-edited choice of finishes, materials and millwork. “The look is clean and simple, but it’s also warm and hand-crafted,” she points out.

Flooring in the main spaces are agglomerate marble, a terrazzo-like material that lends a subtle sheen to the setting, contrasted by the warmth of the kitchen’s rift-sawn white oak cabinetry. Hand-crafted concrete tiles clad the fireplace mass that separates the living and dining areas, while the high ceilings are clad in wood, adding an organic touch to the interior. The open kitchen is perhaps the piéce de résistance of the interior, featuring a generously sized, quartz-clad island and back counters with windows overlooking a small courtyard marked by mid-century modern style metal screens. “This kitchen has no upper cabinets,” says Smyth. “Everything seems hidden behind cabinetry doors, yet it’s fully functional. But the real workhorse is the large back kitchen, which has full-size appliances and a huge display cabinet for serving pieces that’s perfect for a caterer.” Smyth staged the home with stylish furnishings that appear to be collected over time, mixing in touches of wood, stone and metal and choosing upholstered pieces with curvaceous lines as a counterpoint to the home’s rectilinear lines. For a glass-walled flexible room just off the main living area, Smyth chose to show it as a den. “This could easily be an office, too,” she remarks. “This is not a ‘safe’ spec home that most developers would take on,” Peterson concludes. “We did narrow the scope of the market for most spec homes, but we are appealing to a sophisticated buyer.” The current listing price is $10.3 million.

We talked with Chef Alex Stratta to find out what he likes to serve at a party. Plus, he shared some down-to-earth advice on making parties lovely every time. Chef says, “Know your guests and their preferences. Knowing what your guests enjoy and remembering that they are vegetarian or gluten-free, for example, shows a great level of care. Create a theme for your party, even if it’s subtle. It will guide your decision-making on which foods work well together, what beverages to pour and how to create inspired decor.” To avoid stress, plan menu items that don’t require much last-minute attention. Always balance fish, meat and vegetable options to suit every palette. Make sure that drinks
and food are served at the correct temperature. Pre-chill bubbles and white wine at 49 to 55 degrees F, slightly warmer than refrigerator temps. Red wines should be slightly cooler than room temperature, around 68 degrees F. Take the time to make or buy good, purified ice. Crystal clear ice balls are best for single-liquor cocktails. “My days in fine dining taught me to always have spotless stemware. This is not a job for the day of the party. When you are not in a rush, handwash your stemware in warm water with odor-free soap. Allow your glasses to dry on a rack and then polish with a polishing cloth,” he says. “Lastly, if you want to have the greatest success impressing your guests, keep it simple and elegant and do simple things well. DEVILED EGGS WITH SMOKED SALMON AND OSETRA CAVIAR (MAKES 24 CANAPES)
INGREDIENTS 12 large organic eggs ½ cup avocado ¼ cup crème fraiche 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar Salt and pepper

RILLETTES 1 pound fresh salmon filet (bones/skin removed) 1 tablespoon olive oil ½ cup red onion ½ cup fennel ¼ cup Italian parsley ½ cup firm sour cream 2 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice Salt and pepper to taste

Place the eggs in a pot of warm water and boil for six minutes on a low simmer. Drain and chill in iced water until cold. Peel the eggs and cut them in half vertically. Remove 1/8 inch of opposing sides of the egg (so they don’t slide). Gently remove the cooked yolk and separate the cooked yolks from the whites, refrigerate the whites to drain and cut the side down of each egg on an absorbent towel. Place the cooked yolks, cubed avocado, crème fraiche, vinegar and seasonings in a food processor and blend well until smooth. Once the mixture is smooth and creamy, place in a plastic piping bag and refrigerate until needed. Once chilled and the whites have drained well, cut the piping bag ½ inch from the tip and overfill the whites with the purée.
GARNISH 4 ounces Scottish smoked salmon 2 ounces Osetra caviar 2 tablespoons chives (minced) Working with the 24 egg halves with piped filling, drape a slice of salmon on the egg and garnish with a small rounded spoon of caviar. Finch the top with minced chives.

Cut the salmon into 2- to 3-inch pieces and place them in a bowl. Coat lightly with olive oil and season. Place on a baking dish and spread out to an even layer. Cook for eight minutes at 350 degrees F in a convection oven, cool and reserve. Dice the onions and fennel to 1/4-inch dice, coat lightly with oil and season. Cook slowly in a heavy pan over low heat until soft and translucent. Cool and reserve. Combine the cooked salmon with the vegetables and fold in the remaining ingredients, squashing by hand until smooth. Cool and refrigerate and cover for at least three hours to come together.
GRILLED CHICKEN AND APPLE SALAD (MAKES 40 CANAPES)
CHICKEN
CHICKEN SALAD
6 fresh chicken thighs (boneless/skinless) 1 ounce olive oil 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon fresh thyme sprigs Salt and pepper, to taste
3 cups diced grilled chicken thighs (cooked through) 2 green apples peeled and cored (1/4-inch dice) ¼ cup celery (1/4-inch dice) 2 tablespoons green onion (minced fine) ¼ cup toasted pecans 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar ¼ cup dried cherries (soaked in vinegar) ¼ cup Italian parsley ¼ cup sour cream ½ cup mayonnaise 2 tablespoons apple caramel Salt and pepper to taste
Toss the whole thighs in the ingredients and store them in a shallow container with plastic wrap pressed against the meat. Cover tightly with additional plastic wrap. Refrigerate for up to three days. Heat a grill to medium heat and season the marinated chicken well with salt and pepper on both sides. Gently grill chicken to an internal temperature of 150 degrees F and allow five minutes for the chicken to rest on a rack. Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled (about four hours) and dice into 3/8-inch cubes. Refrigerate again until needed.
Combine all prepared items in a mixing bowl and stir with a spatula (or spoon). Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Refrigerate for one to two hours. Serve on crostini, crackers or mini toast. For gluten-free, serve on endive leaves. ICONICLIFE.COM

CHEESE PUFFS (MAKES 40 BITES)
INGREDIENTS 11 ½ cups whole milk 4 ounces whole butter 6 ¼ ounces AP flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon granulated sugar 1 teaspoon white pepper 5 whole eggs 6 ¼ ounces grated Manchego cheese
METHOD
Simmer water with butter, sugar and salt and add flour in a slow and steady stream. Stir over medium heat for four minutes. Place the warm paste in a mixing bowl fitted with a paddle and mix at medium speed. Add eggs one at a time as the dough incorporates. While the mixture is hot, grate the cheese and mix until the cheese has melted into the dough smoothly. Place dough in a piping bag and pipe in ½-ounce dollops (the size of a chestnut) onto a baking dish fitted with a piece of parchment paper and cool. Once the portions have cooled, roll them into even balls and, place them on a half-baking sheet fitted with a silpat* and refrigerate (or freeze) until needed. Preheat a convection oven to 450 degrees F with a high fan, and bake the cheese puffs for five minutes. Turn the fan to low, lower the temperature to 350 degrees F for two minutes, turn the sheet pan, and then another two minutes or until evenly golden brown. Serve warm or at room temperature. *A non-stick baking sheet made of food-safe silicone and fiberglass mesh

CHOCOLATE BUDINO (MAKES 12)
INGREDIENTS
VANILLA CREAM
2/3 cup granulated white sugar 2/3 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder 4 tablespoons cornstarch ¼ teaspoon salt 3 ½ cups whole milk ½ cup heavy cream 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped 2 teaspoons vanilla paste 2 tablespoons dark rum
1 pint heavy cream ¼ cup powdered sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla paste
METHOD
Whisk sugar, cocoa, cornstarch and salt in a two-quart saucepan. Slowly add milk and cream, whisking constantly. Bring ingredients to a simmer over medium heat. Cook, while whisking, until thickened and beginning to bubble at the edges of the pan (about 12 to 15 minutes). Add chocolate and stir until smooth (about 30 seconds). Remove from heat, then stir in vanilla and rum. Divide between 4-ounce ramekins, cover with plastic wrap and chill until set (about 1 1/2 hours).
METHOD
Place the chilled cream, sugar and vanilla into a mixer with a whisk attachment and stir slowly to combine ingredients well. Turn up the speed and whisk until it forms firm peaks, then place in a piping bag and reserve refrigerated until needed. Pipe the vanilla cream over the set chocolate mousse and garnish with a dusting of cocoa powder.
GRILLED NAAN CROSTINO INGREDIENTS 8 8-inch fresh naan breads 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil Salt to taste Get a grill hot and lightly brush bread with olive oil and grill on both sides until toasty. Chill on a rack, cut into 1/8 wedges of round bread and use as a canape base.
GARNISH 1 cup navel orange segments drained well 1 cup fennel (thinly sliced and chilled on ice, drain well) 8 red radishes (thinly sliced and chilled on ice/drain well) Italian parsley (picked leaves) 1 teaspoon lemon juice 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Salt and pepper to taste 1 pint salmon rillettes 28 triangles of grilled naan crostini
METHOD
In a chilled bowl, mix the orange, fennel, radishes and parsley leaves. Season with lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper. Scoop about one ounce of salmon on each triangle and garnish the top with the dressed vegetables and orange segments. Serve chilled.

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
Tanzania has 22 national parks and several game reserves and conservation areas that occupy about onethird of the country. Each is a magical destination for nature and wildlife safaris. Many visitors also like to hike the tallest mountain in Africa, Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro. I love the beaches, culture and history of Tanzania’s famous and exotic island, Zanzibar.
Serengeti National Park is in northern Tanzania and is unequaled for its natural beauty. Serengeti means “endless plains” in the Maasai language. It is one of the world’s most celebrated wilderness areas. Year-round, the Serengeti is a photographer’s and naturalist’s paradise, with abundant elephants, buffalo, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, leopards, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, crocodiles, and migratory wildebeest and zebra. The park is also home to more than 450 bird species.
The Republic of Tanzania was formed in 1964 with the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Julius Nyerere was the first president of Tanzania. He helped bring 120 tribes together and establish a national language, Kiswahili. Many credit him with creating the unified Tanzanian national identity. Samia Suluhu Hassan is the current president. She is the country’s first female president and the first president born in Zanzibar.
One of the greatest spectacles in the natural world is the “Great Migration of Wildebeest” and other grazing herbivores across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. I soaked in the beautiful terrain and nonstop parade of animals consisting of over one million wildebeest, some 250,000 zebras and countless Thompson’s gazelles.
Now, let’s get there and explore! Most guests fly into either Kilimanjaro International Airport (IATA airport code: JRO) near Arusha and Moshi or Julius Nyerere International Airport (IATA airport code: DAR) near the coastal city of Dar es Salaam. 136

The migration is usually in Tanzania for nine months (mid-October to mid-July) and Kenya for about three months (late July to early October). Once you pick your travel dates, it’s time to choose the best lodge with a prime location so that you are likely to be closest to the Great Migration of The Wildebeest.

NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA
In northern Tanzania, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is named after the Ngorongoro Crater, Earth’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Due to its enclosed geography, wildlife does not migrate here. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area has become a natural sanctuary for some of Africa’s densest populations of large mammals. The conservation area also contains Olduvai Gorge, one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world, made famous by the work of Louis and Mary Leakey, famous archaeologists.
TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
In northern Tanzania, with the lovely Tarangire River, Tarangire National Park is famous for its giant elephants and many majestic baobab trees. Other wildlife includes zebras, gazelles, elands, impalas, giraffes, buffalo, dik-dik, African wild dogs, cheetahs, leopards, lions, olive baboons, wildebeest, and more than 550 species of birds.
In southern Tanzania, Ruaha National Park is the second-largest national park in East Africa. Ruaha has the largest concentration of elephants here, with a population of nearly 10,000. Plus, Ruaha is home to 10 percent of the global lion population. Other native animals include leopards, cheetahs, zebras, elands, giraffes, impalas, bat-eared foxes, snakes, crocodiles, and jackals. Ruaha is a spectacular destination with a low visitor count of about 20,000 per year.
NYERERE NATIONAL PARK
Established in 2019, Nyerere National Park was formed by taking over the northern part of the famous Selous Game Reserve. Located in southeastern Tanzania, Africa’s largest national park boasts one of Tanzania’s largest concentrations of wildlife. The park has yet to be frequented by many guests, making this destination a hidden gem. The park is remote, pristine and unspoiled. Here, the great Rufiji River—the largest river in Tanzania—has a healthy population of hippos and crocodiles. Exciting activities include riverboat safaris through channels, lagoons and swamps to spot wildlife. The park is also home to a traditional village that provides cultural exchanges and insights into the local people’s special and unique way of life.

MAHALE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
Set among the spectacular, forested slopes of the Mahale Mountains, the Mahale Mountains National Park was created to protect the hundreds of chimpanzees that inhabit the region. Mahale contains nine other primates: two species of Galago—bush babies, vervet, silver and red-tailed monkeys, yellow baboon, Angolan, and red colobus, and the robust chimpanzee. Mahale Mountains National Park is renowned for its fantastic sunsets over Lake Tanganyika, the world’s second-longest and second-deepest freshwater lake. The lake is home to at least 400 species of freshwater fish, of which about 250 are cichlids and 98 percent are endemic. The park’s breathtaking habitats include a mosaic of overlapping rainforests, woodlands, bamboo forests, montane forests and mountain grasslands. The area contains at least 337 bird species, many rare and endemic to the Albertine Rift.
SINGITA GRUMETI RESERVE
I have saved the most exclusive and luxurious game, nature and lodging experience to talk about last—the Singita Grumeti reserve managed by the esteemed Singita group. Located in north Tanzania, adjacent to the Serengeti National Park, the reserve is integral to the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem and can only be described as magical. SHINING THROUGH TIME The Times Square Ball by Waterford Crystal, a beacon of opulence and a symbol of the world's most extravagant New Year's celebration. By Sam Micatrotto

s the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, the world holds its breath as all eyes turn to the dazzling spectacle unfolding in Times Square. It’s a moment of anticipation, celebration and sheer extravagance that has captured the hearts of millions for over a century. The ICONIC Times Square Ball is already an emblem of opulence, and the exquisite craftsmanship of Waterford Crystal makes it even more breathtaking.
CENTURY OF SPLENDOR: THE TIMES SQUARE BALL’S JOURNEY
Tourists and New York locals have been congregating in Times Square to welcome the New Year since 1904. But it wasn’t until 1907 that the inaugural New Year’s Eve Ball made its grand descent from the flagpole atop One Times Square. Crafted by Jacob Starr, a skilled immigrant metalworker, this first-ever ball was an exquisite fusion of iron and wood, adorned with one hundred 25-watt lightbulbs. Throughout the years, the ball has seen several transformations. In 1920, a 400-pound wrought iron ball replaced the original. By 1955, it morphed into an aluminum marvel weighing a mere 150 144

pounds. The 1980s saw a whimsical twist when it transformed into a glowing apple, symbolizing New York’s allure in the “I Love New York” campaign. But tradition reigns supreme, and in 1995, the ball regained its classic radiance with aluminum skin, rhinestones, strobes and computer controls.
ENTER THE CRYSTAL ERA: WATERFORD’S DAZZLING CONTRIBUTION
The turn of the millennium ushered in a new era for the Times Square Ball. In 2000, Waterford Crystal took center stage in the redesign, marrying cutting-edge lighting technology with timeless elegance. This crystalline masterpiece would mark the start of an exciting new millennium. Fast forward to 2007, the centennial anniversary of the ball drop tradition, calling for a luminous makeover. Modern LED lighting technology replaced incandescent bulbs, ushering in a new era of brightness and color. The spectacular Centennial Ball inspired the creation of a permanent Big Ball weighing nearly six tons and measuring 12 feet in diameter. Adorned with 2,688 crystal triangles illuminated by 32,256 LEDs, this monumental masterpiece now graces the New York skyline year-round, a beacon of splendor above Times Square.
