MEZCAL is Having a Moment By Shoshana Leon
A
ccording to legend, mezcal first came about when a lightning bolt struck an agave plant in the Oaxacan desert, splitting it open and pouring out mezcal— the word for roasted agave.
Mezcal Amarás focuses on sustainability with its smoky sipper.
Mezcal has been referred to as tequila’s smoky cousin, as they are both made from agave. There are nearly 200 types of agave, and mezcal can be made from more than 40 of them. The agave for tequila is steamed in ovens that are above ground, and mezcal producers use in-ground fire pits filled with wood and charcoal. A name that is making a splash right now is Mezcal Amarás, producing ancestral and artisanal mezcals, distilled in clay pots and copper stills. Sustainability is an integral part of Mezcal Amarás’ model. Since 2014, the brand has planted seven agaves for every agave harvested. They also work with the World Wildlife Fund to develop initiatives favoring forests, soil conservation and water use. Mezcal Amarás produced the first carbon-neutral mezcal, and supports Maestros Mezcaleros, paying a fair price and educating workers.
Mezcal Amarás Cupreata is made from a 13-year-old wild agave plant from Guerrero that is grown 4,000 to 6,000 feet above sea level, with notes of pumpkin seeds, leather and cacao complemented by herbaceous flavors. 32

Mezcal Amarás offers several varieties ideal for cocktails. Espadín Reposado is made from an eight-year-old agave plant from Oaxaca and rested for a minimum of three months in French and American oak, with light notes of vanilla and roasted hazelnut on the palate.

hile the phrase “sport of kings” is historically ascribed to hunting and horse racing, it is not a stretch to attach it to billiards. Centuries before we came to know it as “pool,” an early iteration of the billiard table was recorded as a prized possession of King Louis XI of France around 1470. It was described this way: “A bed of stone, a cloth covering and a hole in the middle of the playing field, into which balls could be driven.”

Gaga’s Famous Facialist
Learn what the aesthetician to the stars suggests for stunning skin. By Livia Hooson
“My grandmother, Hiroko, owned a kimono factory in Kyoto with her husband. No matter how busy her day was, she would massage her face and take her time removing her makeup. I remember that so well,” says Song. But what sets Song apart is her approach to skin that begins from beneath. Song’s intuitive massages sculpt the face while draining fluids to reduce inflammation, ultimately changing how the face feels and functions, all under 60 minutes. “When I touch people’s faces, we are all the same. We carry so much inflammation and tension in our faces, and no matter if you use a $1,000 cream or a high-frequency
38

machine, if you don’t have a healthy flow underneath, nothing will last,” she says. Song’s one-of-a-kind facial technique is named KAIKA, meaning “to bloom” in her native Japanese language. She uses a Japanese-made machine that runs micro-current through the entire body. “Micro current charges the mitochondria in our body, which is the powerplant to our cells. Our cells receive current from our mitochondria allowing them to communicate faster and more efficiently. When we get older, our bodies lose current,” says Song. Pair this with Song’s superhuman yet delicate touch and the results are powerful. This stimulating treatment creates blood flow in the face leading to an increase in oxygen and nutrients that causes suppler and less inflamed skin. “So, take care of that skin because you cannot replace it.”

OASIS
The best place to stay in Sedona is at a boutique resort where the views, dining and service make for a super luxe stay. By Laura Novak
40
Executive Chef Franck Desplechin and Executive Pastry Chef Morgan Gurney elevate their Southern European cuisine to that of a truly decadent experience.
L’Auberge is truly a hideaway right below the heart of this bustling town where guests can hike, take a Pink Jeep tour, shop or stroll a myriad of galleries, before returning to your little piece of paradise.
Stay at one of the creekside cottages with a wood-burning fireplace, outdoor cedar shower and private terrace with only the sound of the running waters to lull you to sleep. The well-appointed cottage welcomes each guest into what feels like a tranquil oasis where comfort only comes second to the view.
If you’re craving an indulgent meal, then the seven-course tasting menu at Cress on Oak Creek will delight your senses while dining creek-side. The journey of inspired dishes you will savor includes pan-seared Branzino with smoked trout roe and saffron espuma, and a warm chocolate souffle with smoked chocolate cremeux and caramel whiskey gelato.
If pampering is on the agenda, then the L’Aromatherapy Essential Massage is a must. You’ll start at the L’Apothecary Blending Bar, where you mix your own treatment massage oil with herbs and botanicals to create your own scent profile oil for use during your relaxation massage.

Which wines are the best of the best? And what wines pair best with fun in the sun? By Mark Tarbell
T
emperatures are heating up and here comes a whole lotta fun! We turned to acclaimed chef and wine expert Mark Tarbell for his picks for the best bottles to drink this season.
BEST WINE FOR A CLAM BAKE
Clambakes are near and dear to my heart. Growing up on the New England Coast, they were the defining celebration of summer. Shedding off the bitter cold of winter by spreading the abundance of the sea out along the beaches and coastal fields. The steam-pit grill was lined with seaweed and filled with fresh shucked “sugar and butter” corn on the cob, little neck clams, blue mussels, oysters, Maine lobster, Dad’s Chowda and steamed stone crab.
LEROY BOURGOGNE BLANC TASTING NOTES: Nothing goes better with
butter and cold-water shellfish than French Char-Don-Ay or White Burgundy—you need a little richness framed by an elegant buttery tartness.
LIEU DIT MELON DE BOURGOGNE
Bourgogne has always been wonderfully deceiving. It is neither melon-like or from Bourgogne (Burgundy), it is more likely called Muscadet and from the Atlantic side of the Loire Valley in France. Muscadet is super bright and clean, making the shellfish pop! (continued on p. 44) 42

Big wines for big flavors, yes! BBQ has a lot going on. Smoke, spice and a little ma suga/sweetness. These profiles are normally a big challenge for wine, so beer gets the vote. Not today!

Red out there right now. This tiny property is owned, farmed and passionately interpreted by Laurent Vaille. Just nine hectare of planted red grapes, it is small, planted with Syrah, Cabernet, Mourvedre and Counoise. Only a couple thousand cases of this wine are made for the entire world!

BEST WINE FOR A PICNIC
Keep it simple is the motto of all picnic selections! Rosé is super popular, now but one thing that it offers more than just immense enjoyment is flexibility. Rosé is a wine that can wrap itself around most dishes and have a happy marriage.
LES RASCASSES ROSE
TASTING NOTES: This if from Provence France,
which might be the best region in the world to make Rosé. The Railsback Freres (brothers) are American dudes that are deep in the wine biz. They decided a few years ago to start making wine. And wow, it’s great juice, a great value, and we look forward to what they do next.
BEST WINE AFTER A SUNSET HIKE
CALLAGHAN MOURVEDRE
TASTING NOTES: Nothing like enjoying an AZ
sunset with an AZ wine! The godfather of Arizona wine, Kent Callaghan, makes this. Made in the beautiful Sonoita-Elgin area of Southwestern Arizona, it’s showing the beauty, power and strength of what this state has to offer!
DOMAINE DU PELICAN ARBOIS CHARDONNAY
TASTING NOTES: Made by one of the top
Burgundy Winemakers, Marquis d’Angerville in the Arbois region that is in the Jura foothills remote and cool. The grapes are organically farmed and fermented in “wild” or native yeasts. It’s stunning, but lean and refreshing— not like any other Chardonnay.

TOCCIN Evoke Joy Through FASHION The tastemaking duo behind TOCCIN talks about their new collection and designing and dressing for fashion today. By Taylor Transtrum | Photography Courtesy of TOCCIN
C
ollaborating since their first days in college, today husband-and-wife fashion designers Alex and Michael Toccin have built a fashion resume worthy of awe, and today TOCCIN’s family of brands is growing, just like the number of tiny feet in their home. Following the success of their Saks and Neiman Marcus-carried brand TOCCIN NY, the designing duo recently launched its second clothing line, LDT, exclusively for Dillard’s, and it’s named for their daughter who inspired this fresh take on fashion with details inspired by the 1960s and 1990s.
ICONICLIFE.COM
51
“I majored in marketing and interned at fashion houses in NYC” Alex adds. “When we graduated, I knew I was coming to New York and diving right into the fashion business,”she says. Michael’s path was not quite so linear. “I was actually going to go be a lawyer, and then when I was a [college] junior, a big shift happened when my grandmother suggested fashion might be a fit,” he says. Michael went on to work for Oscar de la Renta, Zac Posen and KaufmanFranco for several years, while Alex worked for various brands including Ralph Lauren and Theory. As the duo continued to gain industry experience, people started to take notice.
“We named LDT after our daughter, Liv Dakota Toccin, who just turned three,” says Alex, now mom to a son. Sold in 85 Dillard’s stores nationwide and on Dillards.com, LDT embraces the brighter side of life, bringing joy back to the art of dressing. “When we designed the LDT collection, we were thinking about the next generation, and that’s why we named it after her,” adds Michael. “Our daughter brings joy and happiness into our life, so we brought that into the collection by making it colorful and bright—it’s all about color, tailoring and what the dress exudes.” Born out of a blog “Stylists to a T,” Toccin NY is not only LDT’s predecessor, but a visual manifestation of both Alex and Michael’s aesthetics and relationship.
52
ICONICLIFE.COM
“Women would constantly come up to both of us and say ‘What do I wear? How do I wear it? Where do I buy it?’” says Alex. “That’s when it really hit us—we realized that there was an opportunity in the marketplace to create a dress line that really appealed to the working woman. And that’s how the fashion brand TOCCIN was really created.” Two kids and a few years later, and the couple has crafted a near-perfect approach to balancing both parenthood and their brand. “As we’re growing, there’s only so much time. And now we’re really having to divide and conquer, and we know what we’re best at. I’m the creative, and Alex is our CMO. She’s the most amazing marketer. She does what she does, and I do what I do,” says Michael.
“It’s been so important for us during this pandemic to get up and get dressed for the day,” says Alex. “And it is so important that we continue to spread positivity during this time, and really encourage women to get dressed and be styled to a T.” What’s next? “There’s so much next for us,” says Michael. “We have a lot up our sleeves. We are looking to continually build both of our businesses to be full lifestyle collections, and we would eventually love to be in all categories. So, when we get there, we get there, but one step at a time.”

HAVING A MOMENT
Chopped! and
BEYOND Best known for Food Network’s “Chopped,” Chef Scott Conant, creator of the new hot spot, The Americano, dishes on his success as a restauranteur and family man.
F
ood Network personality and restauranteur Scott Conant could have been a plumber. It’s fortunate for his many television and restaurant fans that the stylish and charismatic chef didn’t get into the plumbing program at the vocational high school he attended in Connecticut. Instead, he decided to study culinary arts and found his passion. Conant attended the reputable Culinary Institute of America in upstate New York, studied in Europe and worked at several renowned Italian restaurants in New York City. In 2002, he opened L’Impero to critical acclaim, receiving three stars from The New York Times and was named Best New Restaurant by the James Beard Foundation.

By Shoshana Leon
Two years later, in 2004 Conant would be named one of America’s Best New Chefs by Food & Wine magazine. He then opened Alto, an Italian restaurant in midtown Manhattan, followed by Scarpetta, which was named one of 2008’s Best New Restaurants by Esquire magazine. That’s when he became a darling of the television circuit. He describes his culinary style as deliberate cooking—a combination of rustic and refined, with influences from different regions of Italy. Some of his signature dishes are pasta Pomodoro, and creamy polenta with mushrooms and bacon. “I cook what I’m comfortable with, food that has soul and big flavors in a thoughtful way,” he said. Conant currently helms three restaurants, including Mora Italian, a contemporary eatery in Phoenix serving handmade pasta and the classic wood-fired pizza and Cellaio, located in the Catskill Mountains in southeastern New York, an Italian-inspired steakhouse offering fresh pasta, seafood and a variety of aged steaks. His newest addition is The Americano, in Scottsdale, an Italian steakhouse he refers to as “modern in approach and Italian in spirit.” Nearly three years ago, Conant moved from New York to Arizona to open the restaurant, Mora Italian. “Living in Arizona is a beautiful lifestyle. I feel relaxed like I’m on vacation. Arizona has a great pool of culinary talent, and a very supportive culinary community,” he said. For all of his success, Conant remains humble and grateful. “I’ve been in this industry for more than 30 years, and I’m fortunate to be a part of today’s growing food culture with the popularity of chefs and Food Network. It’s a big part of my world. I love what I do, and I’m blessed to do it,” he said. Although he has found success as an entrepreneur, chef, television personality and author, Conant is first and foremost a family man. “The thing I enjoy the most is cooking breakfast for my family,” he said. “My kids aren’t going to be young forever, and my time with them is very precious. Everything I do is for my family.” FOR THREE OF CONANT’S RECIPES, GO TO ICONICLIFE.COM.

Get away from it all at the most luxurious ranch in the country. By Dena Roché
T
he way the world is has changed our notion of an ideal luxury vacation from exploring a bustling, cosmopolitan city, to one favoring wide-open spaces, sparse crowds and private local experiences. In Saratoga, Wyoming, Brush Creek Ranch has quietly been attracting low-key VIPs for years and offers the perfect playground for a 2021 getaway with a Forbes five-star rating. Named one of the world’s best ranches by Travel & Leisure, the seasonal 30,000-acre working cattle ranch opens for the summer on Memorial Day weekend. While cowhands are busy wrangling the herd, you’ll be busy trying to decide from the myriad of activities to take part in for the day. Fly fishing in the morning followed by a cooking class in the afternoon perhaps. While Brush Creek Ranch has a family friendly Lodge and Spa, for sheer luxury and exclusivity opt to stay at its Magee Homestead, a five-star Relais & Chateaux collection of nine cabins nestled into a tranquil, creek-side location on the ranch. The hotel is adults-only, unless you do a private buy out for the duration of your stay.
ICONICLIFE.COM
65
The cabins date to the early 20th Century, each named for the original homesteader owner who lived there. Those early settlers would barely recognize their former homes after a total renovation by Simeone Deary Design Group transformed the rustic cabins into luxuriously appointed, Western chic enclaves featuring modern amenities, original artwork and creature comforts those pioneers couldn’t even imagine. After a long day of physical activities, relax at either Magee’s Spa or the Trailhead Spa at Brush Creek Ranch Wyoming. Indulge in an altitude adjustment massage or luxuriate with the Spirit of Brush Creek body wrap.
© Dan Ham Photo 2012
Being a Relais & Chateaux program, a big focus at Magee Homestead is on culinary experiences held at The Farm at Brush Creek. Spend a morning working alongside the ranch’s executive chefs making pasta, crafting healthy eats or mastering butchery. True gourmands should opt for the full day epicurean adventure. And opening this year, a state-of-the art creamery will turn you into a cheese monger for the day.

If liquid libations are your fancy, the 94-yard, 30,000-bottle wine cellar is your happy place. Join Gretchen Allen, head sommelier for a deep dive into the collection, paired with wine education and of course, wine tasting at Brush Creek Ranch Wyoming. For those that prefer a wee dram of whiskey, the Spirit Room experience will have expert mixologists introduce you to rare, small batch whiskeys, bourbons and other spirits usually kept under lock and key.

For those that prefer leaving the culinary pursuits to the pros, you’re in luck as Executive Chef Angus McIntosh is a former protégée of Thomas Keller at the iconic French Laundry in Napa. Helming the Ranch’s Cheyenne Club Chef McIntosh and his team craft gourmet delights from the ranch’s 20,000 sq. ft. certified organic greenhouse and premium 100-percent American Wagyu raised on the ranch. While Brush Creek offers so much to do, sometimes it’s time to just savor a quiet moment, grab a bottle of your favorite wine and sit outside your cabin watching a sunset exploding in a kaleidoscope of reds, pinks, oranges and yellow. For city slickers simply enjoying the absolute silence while reading that book you’ve been meaning to get to by the fire pit is magical. Indeed, it’s hard to beat Brush Creek Ranch.

How to Host a
MODERN TEA PARTY by Emily Jacobs
F
orget excess frills and stuffy small talk, today’s tea party is bold and beautiful. We chatted with the experts to share how to bring it together.
SET THE SCENE
First, think about the kind of party you’d like to have and the mood of the event. “There was this trend where tea parties made people think of mismatched china and grandma’s house, but now there’s an interest in something sleek and sophisticated,” says Rachael Silard, founder of Ruby & Rose. To get the look, Silard recommends paying close attention to your china selection. “Instead of using traditional teapots, source really beautiful pottery or ceramic plates to give things a more modern, tailored feel,” she says.
MIX & MATCH
Incorporate metallic pieces, different textures and patterns across your dishes and flatware.
Jackie Mercandetti
A PLACE FOR EVERYONE
If you’re having a seated lunch, place cards and printed menus are both practical, pretty and personal. “I’m a huge fan of calligraphy and personalizing paper goods,” Silard says. “Some nice signage for the different teas that you’re going to serve and tasting notes are also a great idea.”
KEEP IT SEASONAL
Michelle Gonzales at The Phoenician says that, seasonally, people tend to gravitate toward teas that are lighter in color in the summer and darker in the winter. Flavor wise, chais and rich black teas trend toward the fall, while white and fruit-forward teas are more popular in the spring. She highly recommends serving loose leaf teas. “The option will make a difference in the flavoring of the tea, allowing the tea buds to open up and really provide a strong flavor or more pronounced flavor in the tea.” Steeping time is just as important.
ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCE
For any soirée, entertainment is key. A backyard tea party lends itself well to live music to enhance the ambiance. For an educational element, bring in a tea expert. Or consider a tea tasting for a modern twist.
TREATS TO GO
Edible favors go over well. Think small, like macarons, fresh scones, lemon curd or miniature desserts.
TEA TIME
Not in the mood to host? Make a reservation for high tea at The Phoenician or Arizona Biltmore that do it so well.

WINNER IS… What’s the Best in American Living? Drewett Works Sweeps the Annual Awards Three Years in a Row. By Emily Jacobs
C
.P. Drewett, founder and president of Drewett Works is no stranger to the stage, sweeping the annual Best in American Living Awards three years in a row.
This year, The Crusader, designed by Drewett, which takes inspiration from an F8 Crusader plane, wings folded, on a carrier deck, was named Home of the Year in the 2020 Best in American Living Awards by the National Association of Home Builders as well as Best in Region—Pacific. The awards were presented this February.
Jeff Zaruba / The Crusader
The home’s builder was Peak Ventures; interiors and furnishings were by Ownby Design; and landscape design was by High Desert Designs. The project also was awarded a Platinum Award in the Detached Home Over 5,000 sq. ft. Built for Sale category and a Silver Award in the Outdoor Room category. With a mandate from the soon-to-be-retired builder to create a modernist piece of architecture as his swan-song project, the architect set out to commemorate his father’s military service as a Marine Corps aviator and pilot of the F8 Crusader. The roof form folds and angles were the genesis of the design.
ICONICLIFE.COM
73
A spinal column runs through providing circulation and illumination by sky lights and clerestories, penetrating the core of the house with natural light. The resulting roof forms open up to the Sonoran Desert and southward toward local landmark Pinnacle Peak. The angularity of the house allowed freedom to capture views more effectively than an orthogonal piece of architecture. The lot sits on a peninsula, highly exposed on three sides yet with tremendous views. The manner in which the roof lines converge, as well as the folding undulations of the glazing, created pockets of privacy, allowing the occupant to feel autonomous. “There’s a big idea in the central spine,” judges commented. “They were looking to create something great. The plan of the house (and the roof plan), and how it sits on the site, just grabs you and is outstanding. It looks like a Frank Lloyd Wright prairie-style design.” Tonal Harmony, a custom Paradise Valley residence where every room opens to exterior spaces and dramatically embraces the natural environment, was named Room of the Year.
Dino Tonn / Tonal Harmony
Again, designed by Drewett, the builder was Argue Custom Homes; interior design was by Ownby Design; and landscape design was by Refined Gardens. The project also was awarded a Platinum Award in the Outdoor Room category and a Platinum Award in the Owner Suite, Custom category.
74
ICONICLIFE.COM
With the goal of creating a tranquil retreat, the architect sought to embrace outdoor views and spaces. Public and outdoor spaces are composed of stone-clad massing elements that open via pocketing glass doors and convert into a desert pavilion. A challenge of the site included washes that traversed the lot. The pool played a large role in containment. The guest house cantilevers over one of the washes. The guest house also has a lower volume, providing a distinct communal and intimate sense. The judges praised the strong, linear shape that is connected to the entire house. “The landscape provides a seamless transition between the interior and exterior,” they commented. “The fire-and-water combination feature is cool. The outside is zoned and designed well as separates, yet still very well tied together.” Drewett Works also won a Platinum Award for On the Boards Single-Family Production/Spec Home with Tri-Angulate. “This year’s BALA winners continue on the rich tradition of exceptional residential home design,” said David O’Sullivan, principal of O’Sullivan Architects and 2020 Judging Chair. “These winners are truly forward-thinking and some of the most talented professionals in their respective fields.”

N
ow is the perfect time to plan for a real visit to the United Kingdom to promenade in the footsteps of the Bridgerton clan.
Whether you fancy a visit to a royal palace, a libation at a private club or a romantic interlude in a gazebo, ICONIC LIFE has your guide to seeing England through the eyes of a Bridgerton. But mind your Ps and Qs, as one never knows where Lady Whistledown lurks…
BATH Much of Bridgerton was filmed in the Regency city of Bath. With its Georgian architecture and rich history, the city still retains the look of England in the 1820s. Ninety minutes outside of London, Bath is the place to start with your Bridgerton brigade.
MATCHMAKING MOTHER
No. 1 Royal Crescent is where Lady Featherington schemes to find suitable husbands for her three daughters. Today it’s a museum to showcase life during Regency England. No. 1 is part of Royal Crescent, probably the most famous landmark in Bath, and seen as a backdrop during many Bridgerton scenes depicting London’s Mayfair area. Housing the five-star Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa, it’s the ultimate base for your tour.
GALAS GALLORE
The Assembly Rooms were the social center of Bath during the Regency period. With their original Whitefriars crystal chandeliers and opulent décor, The Tea Room and Ball Room are the perfect setting for the many lavish balls and society events the elite of Bridgerton attend, and also where Lady Whistledown gleans much of her gossip.
ROYALS REGALED
Holburne Museum
Located in Sydney Pleasure Garden, the façade of this Grade 1-listed Georgian building was used to film the entrance scene to one of the many balls featured in the show. The Holbourne Museum was the first public art gallery in Bath and features works by Turner and Gainsborough.
ICONICLIFE.COM
87
DANCING DECOR
With its grand staircase, gilded rooms and sumptuous décor, the Banquet Room at The Guildhall was used for several ball scenes in the series. For more than 350 years, The Guildhall has been the seat of public administration in Bath, and rooms are available for private events.
TEA WITH THE DUCHESS
Regency-era accommodations in Bath worthy of a visit—The Windsor, Eight or The Gainsborough Bath Spa. For an opulent afternoon tea, head to The Pump Room or Dower House Restaurant.
LONDON CALLING Even though much of the Bridgerton series was filmed in Bath, the show is set in London and many key scenes were filmed at locations in and near the capital city.
DAPHNE’S SUITOR ROOM
On the boundary of Greenwich Park and Blackheath is the stately Georgian Ranger’s House—the Bridgerton family home. The site of potential suitors, parties and drama, today’s visitors will find it home to The Wernher Collection—more than 700 artists including Botticelli, one of the best surviving private art collections in Europe.
QUEEN CHARLOTTE’S PALACE
Built for the son of King George III, Lancaster House in the toney St. James area of London is the interior setting for Queen Charlotte’s palace in the show. With a Grand Hall designed to mimic the Palace of Versailles and its sweeping staircase, it’s a home fit for royalty.
Home of the infamous “off-with-their-heads” King Henry VIII, Hampton Court served as the exterior of Queen Charlotte’s palace. While the Queen wasn’t sending anyone to the gallows, a whiff of rejection by her majesty was enough to doom a young debutante to a life with the likes of Lord Berbrooke.

DRINK WITH THE DUKE OF HASTINGS
In the Pall Mall section of London, the private Reform Club was the private club where the Duke of Hastings and Anthony Bridgerton socialized. The exclusive club was founded in 1836 as a gathering place to advance democracy. Today visitors can enjoy a libation, dinner or afternoon tea.
LOOK PRETTY ON THE PROMENADE
Long promenades in the park were a must for courting debutantes, and while London is filled with gorgeous parks, the best place to stroll like Daphne and Simon is in Hyde Park. The ICONIC park is close to Grosvenor Square, where much of Bridgerton is actually set, and its beautiful Serpentine lake provides a tranquil and romantic setting for a promenade.

Located outside of London in Windsor, the Tudor manor house, Dorney Court, is the real-life setting of the Coaching Inn, where Daphne and the Duke of Hastings spend their wedding night. The stately home, which has been in the Palmer family for more than 450 years, is open for garden and mansion tours.

STEAMY STAY
Taking a horse and buggy across England would be uncomfortable and impractical in the 21st Century. Instead hire VIP chauffeur company Chirtongrange to drive you in style to experience Bridgerton Britain. The company regularly drives politicians and celebrities, and the relaxing ride offers a chance to scribe your own version of Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers.
If you’re in England with your SO, a trip north to York and Castle Howard is a must. The castle served as Clyvedon Castle, home of the suave Duke of Hastings. Stay at one of the holiday homes on the castle grounds and maybe, just maybe, you can sneak away one night to the gazebo to recreate one of the steamiest scenes of the season.

This success story begins with Tim McCormac literally on a ladder, until the ladder of success was presented to him and he climbed all the way to the top.

im McCormac, owner of Tempe-based Temac Development Inc., has an impressive resume in the construction industry with a strong focus on quality and building relationships. “I define myself by the quality of the product that we put out,” he said. “I’m a self-made guy that thinks big, delivering quality every time, no matter what kind of project it is. In fact, people recognize our work by the level of quality they can see and feel,” McCormac said.
It was that big-idea perspective that put him in the right place to be selected as ICONIC LIFE magazine’s ICONIC HAUS in 2020, more than 10,000 elegant square feet under roof with a Mod-iterranean design imagined by Candelaria Design. Tim and his wife, Tracey had a vision for a top-shelf approach to modern meets Mediterranean design and made the interior selections throughout the home. Then 20 marquis design teams arrived on the scene to bring the home to life with unique interiors in every space. In the end, more than 100,000 virtual guests toured this stunning home that sold almost immediately upon completion.

Today, McCormac is developing three luxury estates, leading the construction of several large-scale commercial projects and has a vision for a community that would feature a neighborhood of Temac Development-imagined estates. Temac is among the first to work with innovative green building materials and techniques in his homes, and always makes sure every home is a smart home. Sitting at the top of the mountain did not come without a climb from the bottom that included a very determined, intentional trek for young McCormac. McCormac grew up in the construction business and attended Arizona State University’s Del Webb School of Construction. “My dad and grandfather were in construction all of my life, so I knew it was something I wanted to do,” he said. Early in his career, McCormac worked for Pulte Homes and got his general contractor license. He then went to work for Dick Lloyd Custom Homes and built more than 500 homes. McCormac left Dick Lloyd Custom Homes to start Temac Development, his company with a full spectrum of services, from development and new construction to remodeling and restoration. Temac’s experienced team offers the capabilities to manage all aspects of a construction project, as well as combine the functions of architect, interior designer and engineer with its design-andbuild approach.

McCormac worked on a variety of residential, commercial and industrial projects including Greenwood Brewing in downtown Phoenix and Phoenix International Academy. McCormac’s first Temac project was a residential remodel in Arcadia in 2003. Despite some early success, there were times when he struggled to find work during market downturns but learned some important lessons that serve him today. “My good friends helped me through the hard times,” he said. “I also find it extremely helpful to network as much as possible. When I was in need of work, I would do improvements for a bar tab as a way to meet people which led to a lot of opportunities.” In 2012 his business gained momentum, and McCormac built up his portfolio and his reputation in the industry, working on housing developments including Arcadia Heights, bars and restaurants including Pedal Haus Brewery, and a range of other projects from a hangar at Mesa Gateway Airport to the Tesla facility in Scottsdale. Temac is continuing to expand in the luxury home market in Arizona, California and Nevada, including several projects in Paradise Valley. “I see us moving more into the luxury home space,” said McCormac. “As we grow, we always want to stay a boutique builder with quality as our top priority.”

SINGLE THREAD RESTAURANT SONOMA, CALIFORNIA While oenophiles head to Sonoma for the wine, gourmands head there for the chance to dine at Single Thread. Michelin denotes a three-star restaurant as one worthy of a special journey, and that’s exactly what you get at Single Thread.
Run by husband-and-wife chef owners Kyle and Katina Connaughton, the restaurant is a farm-driven dining experience that showcases the best the region has to offer. In addition to holding the coveted three Michelin stars, it won the Miele One to Watch from Worlds 50 Best Restaurants in 2018 and a James Beard Design Award. After 11 courses, spend the night at one of five guest rooms on premise with a modern Japanese aesthetic.

Lucky diners that score a seat at the small restaurant can choose from an omnivore, pescatarian or vegetarian 11-course extravaganza that starts with an aperitif and first courses on the rooftop garden terrace before migrating to the main dining room. The menu changes to reflect what is in season but depending on the night, you might start with Akabana Kanpachi with winter citrus, daikon and
chrysanthemum before enjoying Miyazaki Wagyu with nori, leek and malted potato.

A
long Southern California’s desirable coast, those who have achieved their California dream get to invest in their little piece of heaven with a customdesigned beach house that makes every day feel like a luxe vacation.
This is perhaps why one discreet couple in Newport Beach approached Chris Brandon of Brandon Architects about creating a large home that not only framed their outdoor surroundings along the city’s fabled beachfront and harbor, but also their personal indoor/outdoor lifestyle in ways that could withstand the test of time. And images of this home are like summer on parade. His first challenge in designing the 5,000-square-foot boardwalk home was figuring out how it could fit in with the architecture of other homes in the area yet remain true to the clients who commissioned it. As his firm specializes in designing on the beach, he deals with the procurement of materials that will visually and physically withstand years of salt and moisture to create a framework for a space that perfectly balancing form and function. “Our client bought the property on which Buddy Ebsen—Barnaby Jones and Beverly Hillbillies—built and lived for many years. While it was an attractive boardwalk home, it didn’t take advantage of the amazing location and had reached the end of its lifecycle as a livable space. Some residents were disappointed to see it come down. “However, as the project neared completion, we had overwhelming support and appreciation for what had been done. Although our primary goal is to have happy clients who are thrilled with their home throughout the process and years to come, we also try to be very good stewards of design and socially responsible designers,” says Brandon.
WE MANAGED TO HAVE A VIEW OF NEWPORT HARBOR FROM ALMOST EVERY ROOM IN THE HOUSE.
While it is hard to say where boardwalk home trends and homeowners’ lifestyles will head in the future, his intention to create something that could be readily refreshed every ten years was another goal. “This is what we struggle with every day,” Brandon continues. “For this client, we started with a classic luxury California beach house aesthetic, including white clapboard siding, stone veneer and decorative finish carpentry. Next, we added touches that straddled modern and traditional sensibilities, such as the steel windows and doors and the standing seam metal roofing. ICONICLIFE.COM

There’s been a fairly recent trend for waterfront homes to have three floors. While it can be done, it results in lower ceiling heights and an out-of-scale character to the existing pattern of development. To remedy this, we brought in a third floor, but placed it farther back and in the middle of the lot to allow for an expansive roof deck to sit behind the roofline. This allows the client to enjoy the amazing views and extra entertaining space from that level without ruining the look of the boardwalk home from the water.” Brandon goes on to explain that copper roofing, once very popular for luxury beach house construction in California, can oxidize very quickly. For this reason, he, along with Patterson Custom Homes, opted for Kynar-painted aluminum exterior metal for the roofing, flashing and gutters that would remain black for the life of the home. Complementary powder-coated light fixtures were then added, in lieu of brass or stainless-steel fixtures, which would not endure through constant weather changes. An open floor plan was also an essential part of the design. “This home has a very modern, open floor plan that is disguised behind a timeless design,” he says. “We managed to have a view of Newport Harbor from almost every room in the house. The ceilings are tall, and there’s tons of natural light that pours in from beautiful steel doors and windows, which open up towards the harbor and allow in afternoon sun, even during the cooler months of the year. There’s also a central courtyard, which provides more private outdoor living on the ground level as well as bringing light and air to the interior of the home, designed with the help of Malia Grippo at Tru Studio. “Open floor plans are not going anywhere soon, natural light will probably stay vogue indefinitely, and that view is never going out of style,” Brandon muses. “This look was born out of a desire to have a California luxury beach house with a timeless character and updated transitional elements that would fit a fun, functional and casual beach lifestyle for years to come. At press time, we learned that Brandon won a Best in American Living Award - Gold for a single family home 5,001 to 6,000 sq.ft. Congrats! As Brandon sees it, he’s not just designing good living space for the good of his clients, but also for the broader communities where the homes stand. “Architects have a responsibility to recognize that and try to do better,” he affirms. “I would hope that this home would be seen by many as a good example of inevitable change and custom residential development done right.” 106

ummertime may mean it’s time for fun in the sun, but sometimes we relish a quick retreat into the woods. A shaded, fragrant forest and majestic pines is just what the doctor ordered to beat the summer heat. Join us this season as we try out these five arboreal tracks for a great golf getaway.
TALISKER CLUB Park City, Utah
The Talisker Club in Park City, Utah takes a four-season lifestyle approach in its collection of venues: landmark ski-in/ ski-out at Empire Pass in Deer Valley and award-winning golf and more at Tuhaye. The latter just happens to be the home of two-time major winner Mark O’Meara, who designed the course in 2004. Set at 6,900 feet, the course is basically above the tree line of the local pine and birch but is ringed with native shrubs and scrub oaks. And while it plays long, remember that at this elevation the ball will be flying further.

Stateline, Nevada
You don’t have to stay at the Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe to play the Edgewood Tahoe course in Stateline, Nevada, but why wouldn’t you? The 154-room luxury hotel opened just last year in splendid style on the shores of South Lake Tahoe, overlooking one of the best of the west’s golf courses. It’s a vintage track from 1968 designed by George Fazio, though later renovated by his nephew, Tom. Players at Edgewood confront a course that has it all—stately pines, not-so-distant Sierra peaks and the rippling waters of the lake. The peaks, at least, don’t come into play.

PINE CANYON Flagstaff, Arizona
Prospective members can take advantage of a “Discovery Visit” to Pine Canyon for a two-night stay in a fully furnished home of the master-planned Flagstaff, Arizona community and play two rounds on the Jay Morrish-designed course. The late Morrish created a bold routing back in 2004—a mountainous course with fairways carved through the area’s mighty Ponderosa pines with ample meandering creeks in play. His son, Carter, has helped maintain the playability of the course since. The Troon-managed course always has qualified loopers on hand through the national CaddieMaster program, and players will find a unique halfway house overlooking the ninth tee, Morrish Station, housed in a 1944 Santa Fe Railroad caboose.

his winter, we are setting our sights as high as the skies to witness the annual light show that dazzle during winter and spring months in the amazing Arctic Circle.
Many have wondered what exactly the northern lights—also called the aurora borealis—are and when exactly they are, so you can better your chances to witness this natural marvel. The lights, noted for their shades of green, pink, blue and violet, are caused by electrically charged particles from the sun entering the earth’s atmosphere and can be seen from above the magnetic poles of the northern hemisphere. They can be visible across the entire sky during the winter season between mid-September to mid-April. For the most iconic places to watch the northern lights, we garnered four luxurious accommodations in close proximity to the polar light shows that mesmerize.

wiggy”, by Austrian-born Marc Sadler for Foscarini, has been an iconic and staple design in lighting. It has inspired so many other light fixtures we see today that incorporate a cantilever element. For its 15th birthday, the brand is introducing ”Twiggy Wood”, a special version of the lamp that juxtaposes a wooden shade and its signature slender carbon fiber stem. This floor lamp also integrates a new proprietary LED technology that enhances how light is reflected within the shade, resulting in a softer, more welcoming glow from the light source.
