PUBLISHER’S POV
IT’S ALL ABOUT
LUXURY
I
n this issue, we celebrate luxury in all things—the luxury of time to Live Beautifully, the luxury of enjoying the best of the best, and the luxury to gather and surround yourself with the ones you love this holiday season and into the New Year.
This issue includes so many of my favorite things from creating elegant tablescapes to spritzing my signature scent to escape-worthy holiday travel to savoring the luxurious simplicity of caviar and bubbles—my favorite thing to do during the holidays. Publishing this magazine is a luxury to me. I have the honor of curating content for you, our amazing readers, and I so appreciate all the notes and messages sharing how you are enjoying ICONIC LIFE. With every issue quarterly, we seek to put our best foot forward, presenting captivating content with stunning imagery. The biggest undertaking of every issue is concepting the cover and bringing our ever-growing team together for a significant photoshoot that produces an original fashion story and our cover image. I like to call it “Publisher’s Favorite Day,” as it’s the day when all my hopes and dreams for the issue come together, and we unleash the creative genius of our team to create an ICONIC cover.
Renee M. Dee Publisher @reneeldee @youriconiclife
As someone who has been in publishing my entire career, I follow the great photographers, and I am a student of cover concepts. No one is more impressed by a great cover idea well executed by others. This issue’s cover is inspired by the work of the ICONIC Irving Penn, one of the greatest photographers of the 20th Century, known for taking deeply personal portraits of the biggest names out there for the most important publications of our time, like Vogue. The Orpheum Theatre hosted us for our long day of shooting and shared the theatre’s house-lighting mastermind with our team of eight to bring drama to fashion. There are days of preparation that go into every shoot, and so many friends contribute gowns, shoes, handbags and jewelry that adorn our models. Recently, I learned that so many of you don’t know that we are creating original imagery at this level. Indeed we are…and it’s one of my greatest luxuries. Thank you to my amazing team, my generous friends, my supportive clients and you, our loyal readers for making this ICONIC dream come true.

BRUTISH ON ROSÉ A marriage two centuries ago launched Champagne House Billecart-Salmon. By ICONIC LIFE
Perhaps best known for its Brut Rosé, Billecart-Salmon was born from a celebration—the marriage of Nicolas François Billecart to Elisabeth Salmon in 1818— and it’s been a rich family story ever since, which may just be one of the keys to the brand’s success. Billecart-Salmon produces several Champagnes: seven in the Gallery Collection, including four Brut Champagnes; four Cuvées in the Gallery 42
ICONICLIFE.COM
Millésime Collection; and a special edition Le Clos Saint-Hilare. Annual production is capped at two million bottles distributed across 80 countries, as well as the top restaurants and hotels around the world. Despite the popularity, there are no plans to expand beyond that.
“Most Champagne companies belong to big groups, and they live and die by their financial performance,” he explains. “If it wasn’t for the family ownership and long-term commitment to quality, we would not be able to produce as good a wine as we produce today.
“We can serve an elite array of customers without needing to go mass market,” says seventh-generation family member and chief executive officer Mathieu Roland-Billecart. “We have always had great pride in living the family motto, which is to give top priority to quality and strive for excellence. That is what we try to do every day in creating exceptional wines.”
Roland-Billecart adds that staying away from big, traditional marketing techniques helps the company stay focused. “We’re relatively less well-known, because we don’t do the big push, there is this inner circle who know us and are loyal to us because they know we won’t get compromised by different things. We stay focused on delivering the best Champagne in their glass. At the end of the day, that’s what matters.
Keeping the business in the family is unusual for a 200-year-old brand, but Roland-Billecart attributes the company’s history to its success.
“There is so much in a bottle outside the glass,” he concludes. “It’s a work of passion.”

hen it comes to celebration essentials, bubbly is one of the first things that comes to mind. Light, effervescent and luxurious, it’s the perfect pairing for a festive occasion—or to uplift an ordinary day. And one of our ICONIC favorites is from the House of Champagne Billecart-Salmon.

CAV Celebrated chef Thomas Keller and Shaoching Bishop transform caviar into a pop-up experience. By Emily Jacobs
Regiis Ova offers several distinctive delights for those who enjoy the elegance of tasting caviar. The Russian Ossetra, priced at $145 for 30 grams, has “a robust nutty flavor and buttery finish. The egg color ranges from light brown to dark brown.” 44
ICONICLIFE.COM
The Golden Kaluga Hybrid, priced from $275 for 50 grams, is a cross breed with kaluga and Amur sturgeon, and the caviar presents as large, golden, firm eggs. Regiis Ova also offers a trio gift set so that enthusiasts can taste multiple caviars at once. The $335 set includes 30 grams each of Baerii Reserve, Royal white sturgeon and Ossetra. Visitors to California can enjoy this fab caviar at the Regiis Ova Caviar & Champagne Lounge pop-up. The idea is a whimsical approach to enjoying the famed eggs as a snack with Champagne or as an accompaniment to dinner, ordered by the gram.
Menu highlights include Daniel Boulud Smoked Salmon with Meyer Lemon schmear and bagel wafers, and Hass Avocado Mousseline, with a Hass Avocado purée served with heirloom corn tortilla chips. The beverage program spotlights bubbles through prestige offerings from Dom Pérignon, Krug and Ruinart champagnes, as well as wines from select California and European vintners. The very first record of caviar goes all the way back to Greek scholar Aristotle. The delicacy was given the name caviar from the Persians, based on the Persian word “khavyar,” which means “cake of strength,” due to the roe’s medicinal properties. So spoon up! It’s oh, so good for you!

hef Thomas Keller and Shaoching Bishop, former CEO of Sterling Caviar and Tsar Nicoulai Caviar, have developed a new way to experience caviar. The pair joined forces to create Regiis Ova Caviar, which sources its caviar from the world’s top sturgeon farms. The brand personally selects each farm from which it buys so you can enjoy at their Yountville pop-up.

ighly sought-after amongst whisky collectors and celebrated around the world, rare 1981 Karuizawa Japanese single-cask, malt whiskies were released in sets this summer. The Karuizawa Distillery was based the foot of Mount Asama, one of the most active volcanoes in Japan, until it closed its doors in 2001. The volcano provided the ideal atmosphere for whisky making, with no shortage of mineral-rich snow melt that aided in fermentation and flavoring. With a clean and crisp taste, these rare whiskies are highly sought after for good reason. The distillery’s stock has been gradually bottled and sold, until now, when only two casks purchased by the Founder of Universal Whisky Experience, Mahesh Patel, remain. Held for this limited ‘Legend 50

of Asama’ release, casks 4059 and 6183 were aged 20 years at the Karuizawa Distillery before they were transferred to the Chichibu Distillery, Saitama Prefecture. “I am extremely excited to finally be releasing this very special whisky to the world,” says Patel. “I wanted to ensure that when these exceptional whiskies were released, they were presented in a beautiful way that could tell the story of their turbulent past and be celebrated by the person lucky enough to purchase them.” “This vision, along with Glencairn Crystal’s creativity and innovation has brought a part of this spectacular distillery back to life.” The Japanese whiskies are encased in stunning Glencairn Crystal glassware and lunawood casing, crafted by the award-winning Glencairn Crystal Studio in East Kilbride, Scotland. Packaged with the two bottles of collectable whiskies are two handmade crystal decanters with gold caps, two Glencairn cut crystal glasses and an exclusive Glencairn water-jug to complete the set. Simply crave-worthy.

PIZZA PERFECTED Phoenix chef Chris Bianco is known for making the best pizzas in America.
W
hen it comes to pizza, forget New York and Chicago. Phoenix is a slice of heaven, and leading the charge for pizza supremacy is chef Chris Bianco, the first pizzaiolo to be honored with a James Beard Award, one of the culinary industry’s most prestigious honors. His pizzas have received numerous accolades, including being called one of the best in America by The New York Times, Food & Wine and USA Today, among others, and have garnered him a loyal following of celebrity fans, including Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Seinfeld and Jimmy Kimmel. It’s Bianco’s relentless focus on quality ingredients, technique and execution that makes his pizza stand out, even in a time when exceptional pies can be found in every city 52
ICONICLIFE.COM
throughout the country. “I love to be uber-focused,” he explains. “I believe in doing simple things at a high level.” A native of Bronx, New York, Bianco moved to Phoenix after dropping out of high school. He supported himself by making mozzarella in his apartment, running a catering business and making pizzas in a small corner of a grocery store. In the mid 1990s, he opened two pizza restaurants, both called Pizzeria Bianco, as well as Bar Bianco, a cozy wine bar next to his pizzeria in Heritage Square. People waited for hours to experience his legendary wood-fired pizza with its crispy, chewy crust; gooey cheese; and fresh toppings. In the early 2000s, Bianco opened Pane Bianco, a popular lunch eatery/ marketplace that offers award-winning sandwiches on homemade wood-fired focaccia and high-quality products, such as
Italian olive oil, spices and the chef ’s own brand of tomatoes. In 2016 Bianco debuted Tratto, an upscale restaurant that serves simple and elegant Italian dishes. “I’ve been making pasta for a long time and wanted to deliver a different experience from the pizzeria,” the chef remarks. “Arizona is an agricultural state with an incredible growing season and amazing products.” After more than 30 years in the food business and with nationwide recognition, Bianco remains humble and focused. “I’m extremely grateful and honored for the accolades I’ve received and that people like what I do,” he says. “When things are simple, you really have to nail the ingredients and the execution. Expectations are high, and we always strive to deliver a great experience.”

Casella’s Prosciutto Speciale, produced by his eponymous brand, Casella’s, in collaboration with Heritage Foods USA, is made simply with just salt and time. It is aged 18 to 24 months. The ham comes from heritage breed pigs raised on family-run farms across the Midwest. We spoke with Casella to understand his passion behind prosciutto. ICONIC LIFE: Why is using heritage pigs for prosciutto important to you? CESARE CASELLA: Essentially, heritage breeds can be traced back prior to industrial farming. Many of these breeds are disappearing or would be gone completely if not for the small independent farmers who are committed to raising them. The pigs are pasture-raised, healthier and stronger than those that live inside factories, and they have a more diverse diet. They are more like the pigs my grandfather raised. IL: What is your process for curing the ham?

ou may not know his name, but Cesare Casella is a bona fide culinary celebrity. The Michelin-starred Tuscan chef has opened some of New York’s most beloved restaurants, and he’s a James Beard Foundation Award-nominated cookbook author. But it’s his seriously delicious cured-on-the-bone marbled prosciutto that’s attracting legions of new fans — and that has earned him the nickname “Prosciutto Whisperer.”
IL: What differences can consumers taste in your ham? CASELLA: My prosciutto has a lot of personality. It is dark pink, almost red (depending on the breed) and can sometimes taste very nutty or like licorice, while the fat can be sweet like butter. You have to start with good pigs. They must be happy and have a nice life to make good prosciutto. IL: How do you serve prosciutto? CASELLA: I like to pair my prosciutto with local cheeses, whether I am in Colorado or Vermont. It is made to be ready to eat because of the aging process, and over-cooking can take away the flavor. When topping a pizza, add it as the last step. Prosciutto for Italians is like ketchup for Americans — it is a staple on the table.
Daniel Gritzer
THE
CASELLA: The hams are brought to the aging facility where they are salted before passing through eight different aging rooms that mimic the seasons in Italy through temperature and humidity. After a minimum of 18 months, the prosciutti are ready to be enjoyed.

INGREDIENTS 1 cup heavy cream, chilled (for the whipped cream) 2 cups whole milk* ½ cup milk powder 1 tsp cornstarch 1 cup 60-percent dark chocolate, in disks or coarsely chopped *This hot chocolate is very rich. If you like it slightly thinner, use 3 cups of milk.

To make the whipped cream, pour heavy cream into a medium mixing bowl and place in freezer for five minutes. Take bowl of cream out of freezer and whisk with a large whisk until soft peaks form. To make the hot chocolate, pour milk into a medium sauce pan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Lower heat to medium and add chocolate, whisking vigorously until chocolate is completely melted. Add milk powder and cornstarch. Continue whisking until all ingredients are dissolved and mixture is smooth and thick. To serve, pour equal amounts of hot chocolate into four mugs or glasses. Davidoff cultivates three main types of tobacco: • Oloro Dominicano is “a light tobacco native to Dominican Republic.” • Piloto Cubano is “a powerful Cuban transplant to our fincas.” • San Vicente is “a moderate Cuban strain, also transplanted.” Once the seeds have properly been tended to, two cycles of aging and fermentation occur, and then the tobacco plants are blended by the skilled hands of the cigar-rolling crafters. To ensure that the cigar blend has a full brilliance of taste and flavor, the blends are sampled by the Davidoff expert tasters in Switzerland, where the brand’s headquarters are located.

his year, Chanel No. 5 perfume celebrates 100 years of being the most ICONIC perfume ever created. Developed by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel and famed perfumer Ernest Beaux, Chanel No. 5 revolutionized perfume, blending different scents instead of using just one. Today, women worldwide simply dab a drop behind each ear to bring that quintessential French je ne sais quoi to their style. Gabrielle Chanel lived her life with style. Although not Parisian by birth, Coco made the City of Lights her own. In honor of the 100th anniversary of No. 5, here are the top five must-dos for any Chanel lover in Paris.
THE RITZ
Live like Coco by making the legendary Ritz Paris your home base. The fashion diva lived at the hotel for 34 years, and today her second-floor suite has views of the Place Vendome, the building that was the inspiration for the No. 5 bottle.
CHANEL BOUTIQUE
Located at 31 Rue Cambon, the boutique Coco started in 1918 still stands. Before Coco moved to the Ritz, she lived above her shop. By 1935 there were five Chanel outlets on the street, making this a must stop to buy any number of Chanel classics in Paris.

Coco’s favorite café, founded in 1903, is a must for a mid-day caffeine boost or a cup of hot chocolate. The pastries attracted the likes of Proust and the biggest French fashion designers. The belle-epoque-style salon is famous for brunch.

Chanel was a fierce lover of the arts and created the costumes for Le Train Bleu, a ballet that debuted at the Theatre des ChampsElysess. Take in a performance at the venue.

Bubbly PERSONALITY ICONIC fashion designer Vera Wang struts into the wine world with PARTY Prosecco. By Carlye Klick
V
era Wang is now turning her creativity and passion for design toward how—and what—we celebrate. PARTY is a premium Italian prosecco made for celebrating life’s moments, big and small!
Courtesy Vera Wang PARTY
PARTY Prosecco embodies the bright, fun and fashion-forward side of the globally renowned designer and style visionary with the same bold spirit that transformed fashion by reimagining the bridal space. To craft the prosecco, Vera Wang looked to find a winemaker with both heritage and pedigree. She turned to the top winemaking region Piemonte, known for its sparkling wines and to Araldica, producer of the best-selling Moscato in America. Led by second-generation winemaker Claudio Manera, it is one
of Italy’s fastest-growing producers and most forward-thinking winemaking co-operative. Manera continues his father’s commitment to Italy’s winemaking traditions, preserving local varieties, protecting the environment and valuing the characteristics of each wine. PARTY is crafted from 100-percent Glera grapes and boasts aromas of apple and stone fruit, citrus notes and fresh acidity on the palate, with a soft and fruity finish. This new prosecco offers a fresh perspective in the sparkling wine category with its crisp effervescence, coupled with a bold aesthetic and playful voice. Vera Wang’s attention to detail has shaped every step of PARTY from grape to bottle. The fashion designer created the bottle to look chic on any table—a sleek matte silver with “PARTY” in bold neon yellow letters exuding a modern, easy sensibility. The back of the bottle features an invitation to PARTY from Vera, herself. When we think about what it looks like to gather, Vera Wang’s PARTY reimagines what it looks like to celebrate. It’s what we could all use right now—a little bit of fun, a little bit of joy and a new way to commemorate life’s meaningful moments. ICONICLIFE.COM

Honky Tonk Supper Club
The newest Nashville sensation The Twelve Thirty Club presents a four-concept venue headlined by food and music. By Jillian Vaughn
J
ustin Timberlake and 12-time James Beard Award nominee and restaurant innovator Sam Fox launched a highly anticipated restaurant opening in Nashville this fall, debuting on Upper Broadway with a dapper-as-hell, 400-seat Supper Club in a progressive, three-story experience rooted in the city’s promise of art and life, connecting people to food, music and each other. The Twelve Thirty Club is located at Fifth + Broadway, which spans an entire city block in Music City’s most sought-after locale, with a modern take on a classic, 19th-Century supper club. Dining, entertainment and design collide, where friends old and new unite to experience undiscovered acts, household names, DJs or an impromptu jam session by music’s biggest stars, any night of the week. “Nashville is a city unlike any other. Sam and I wanted The Twelve Thirty Club to stand out and celebrate the different people and cultures that make this place so special. It’s stylish and sophisticated, but still has an unmistakable energy driven by music. We aim to set the tone for what Upper Broadway is and what it has the potential to be. It has been really cool to see it all come together,” said Timberlake. “We really drew our inspiration from the supper club era, cabaret music, food and places of the 30s and the 40s and the 50s,” Fox, founder of Author & Edit Hospitality said. “It has some sort of nostalgic feeling in here. “Years of labor and love went into finely crafting every detail of this truly immersive experience,” said Fox. “Each level of The Twelve Thirty Club is completely unique unto itself when it comes to the menu, cocktail program and design.
The Supper Club menu begins with luxurious starters like Wagyu Steak Tartare and a creative selection of breads like Truffle Cheese Garlic Toast with Smoked Mozzarella, Ricotta, Fontina and Shaved Black Truffle. The over-the-top raw bar takes centerstage with the Pressed Yellowtail & Avocado Sushi with Yuzu Kosho, Crispy Garlic, Toasted Sesame and Chile Honey and a selection of the freshest East and West Coast Oysters on the Half Shell with accoutrements like Chowchow Mignonette. The menu pays homage to classic steakhouse dishes with a whimsical twist, like the Magic Iceberg Wedge, which is perplexingly served as a full head of lettuce with all the fixings encased inside. It also includes an exclusive selection of prime, grass-fed, and bone-in steak cuts with an imaginative menu. All of this comes with an impressive wine collection of more than 1,800 bottles housed in the custom-built, well-curated wine wall, and a beverage program that celebrates both craft and classic. There are three more venues in addition to The Supper Club. The Honky Tonk resides on the first level of The Twelve Thirty Club that debuted as an energetic and elevated Honky Tonk that plays host to Nashville’s rising and well-known stars with live music nightly and an approachable menu featuring the 12/30 Burger and the All-Day Egg Sandwich. Honorary Member is found by ascending a staircase to the mezzanine level, with an intimate, 50-person cocktail lounge. The Rooftop Bar adjoins The Supper Club on the second level, with commanding views of The Ryman, Bridgestone Arena and Lower Broadway. The ultra-chic, garden-style outdoor setting invites guests to gather and toast the night away under a canopy of stars while listening to the latest DJs. ICONICLIFE.COM

HOLIDAY TABLESCAPES Make This Season Bright Set the scene this holiday with five takes on timeless tablescapes. By ICONIC LIFE Photography by David B. Moore All Tablescape Items Courtesy of Main Dish
T
he holiday season is upon us, and whether you’re shopping for gifts, trimming the tree, lighting the Menorah or decorating cookies, the season is abuzz with activity. Find peace and joy around the table connecting with family. There is no better time than now to dress your table for an elevated event. We consulted Andrea Anttonen of Main Dish, a Scottsdale showroom that specializes in luxe, designer tabletop design and home decor, for an expert opinion on how to create a beautiful and simple holiday tablescape. An elegant holiday table leaves a lasting impression on guests but doesn’t need to be overly complicated or difficult. Investing in some classic pieces can serve as the foundation of your design, with smaller details changing to fit the theme. “Your table should be a reflection of yourself,” says Anttonen. “Don’t be afraid to mix patterns, colors and textures to create a look that is unique and showcases your personality, layering as you go.” Get inspired with these five tablescapes centered around holiday celebrations: winter, Chanukah, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

LIGHT IN THE NIGHT CHANUKAH The traditional colors of Chanukah found in this tablescape are made modern with patterns and bold solids. In 1864, the Jewish poet Ludwig August Frankl named blue and white "the colors of Judah" in a poem. Blue and white come with universal associations. White suggests purity, peace and light; and blue is associated with the sky, faith, wisdom and truth. WHAT WE USED Vermicelli placemat in silver, Kim Seybert. Harvard charger, Vista Alegre. IN RESIDENCE 5 CREATIVES YOU SHOULD KNOW These five talents are making their mark as modern artists. By Nora Burba Trulsson
S
panish surrealist Salvador Dali said “a true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.” That inspiration can translate to your home where art is what gives your home a soul. Here are five modern artists we’re following right now.
92

Painter David Dauncey’s abstracts appear distressed and textured— seemingly incorporating bits of history and a veiled past. His portraits also have a weathered quality, often drifting off at the edges into abstract forms. Dauncey’s patrons know they’re not getting a bucolic landscape or a classical side-lit still from him. Instead, his work as a modern artist is bold and commanding.
Jeff Zaruba, Harrison Hurwitz
Born in England and possessing a BFA from the University of Bristol, Dauncey came to Phoenix in 1994 to work for Phoenix Art Group, a production art company that, at the time, employed artists to create work for interior designers and architects to place into homes, hotels, restaurants, offices and other locations. After a few years, he decided to set up his own studio at his home in Midtown Phoenix, which he shares with his wife, artist Judith Dauncey.
DAVID DAUNCEY
Costello Gallery
“There is a wide swath of things that excite me,” says Dauncey of his influences. “I like the work of artists such as Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon and Robert Rauschenberg, and I am drawn to distressed and weathered things, all of which shows in my work. Some people respond to my work, some don’t.” About 20 percent of Dauncey’s work as a modern artist is commissioned, including upcoming pieces for Tokyo Disneyland. And he still connects with interior designers and architects through Costello Gallery in Scottsdale, which has represented him for the past seven years. “I’m not sure if I’m considered an established or mid-career artist,” says Dauncey with a laugh. “I do think I’ve ‘emerged.’ All I know is that I’m always restless and happy to try new things.” ICONICLIFE.COM

Friends and frequent collaborators, Phoenix-based artists Sam Fresquez and Merryn Omotayo Alaka are young—both are 24—but their work, both individually and together, is powerful, visceral and makes strong statements about feminism, stereotyping and culture. A recent collaborative installation, titled “It’s Mine I Bought It,” at Lisa Sette Gallery in Phoenix featured a series of floor-length suspensions of synthetic hair, formed into elaborate braids, tassels and chandelier-like forms, which examined self-expression by women of color and societal expectations.
Steffi Faircloth, Courtesy of the artists and Lisa Sette Gallery
The two met when they were going for their bachelor’s in fine arts at Arizona State University. Alaka grew up in a house filled with African art and crafts, thanks to her Nigerian-born father. Alaka’s work often references West African textiles, Yoruba beaded sculptures, forms of adornment, the Black diaspora and the Black female body. Her intricate tapestry-like sculpture, “Lead With Your Looks,” explores hair braiding in Black culture and the power of female adornment.
MERRYN OMOTAYO ALAKA & SAM FRESQUEZ Lisa Sette Gallery
Fresquez grew up in Mesa, Arizona, with yin/yang influences ranging from spending after-school hours in her grandmother’s art supply store and weekends going to NASCAR races with her father. Attending an arts-based charter high school solidified her desire to be an artist. Fresquez melds Latinx and other influences with historically and culturally significant materials, such as hair, jewelry, found footage and text, into her work. The pair’s first collaborative project was a small piece of jewelry crafted by Alaka. It showcased, in Fresquez’s cursive handwriting, a line of poetry that Fresquez heard in a Spanish class. Today, their individual works are on exhibit through January at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. “It’s been an honor to have a voice in our community,” says Fresquez of the opportunities she and Alaka have had to showcase their work throughout the state. “It’s something neither one of us takes lightly.”

Michael Carson paints people, but don’t call him a portraitist. “I’m not trying to achieve a likeness through my imagery,” says the Minnesota-born, Phoenix-based modern artist. “I think ‘figurativist’ is a better description. My point of reference usually goes away, and I’m free to let the painting go where it needs to go.” Indeed, his angular, moodily lit close-ups, full-body images and rooms full of people have become popular with collectors around the world, thanks to representation by Bonner David Galleries in Scottsdale and New York, as well as Galleri Romfjord in Norway, which is taking his work to this year’s Art Basel in Miami.
Katerina Terekhova , Courtesy of Michael Carson
Carson, who spent the first part of his career as a corporate product designer, got interested in the art form while traveling through Amsterdam and becoming smitten by an artwork he saw in a gallery. “I came home, bought some paint and, within a few years, was painting full time,” he recalls.
MICHAEL CARSON Bonner David Galleries
The modern artist refers to his figurative works as “Frankenstein portraits.” He explains, “I take photos, I tear out images from magazines, I remember people’s faces. In my studio, I will literally have thousands of pieces of paper on the floor for inspiration. I’ll use somebody’s head on another person’s pose, then maybe get someone else’s hands. My art is rarely an image of one actual person.” Currently he is full-on prepping for a December show at Bonner David Galleries’ Scottsdale locale and in the New York gallery next spring. “I am 20 years into my art career,” says Carson, “and I have to say, I have been very lucky.”

Rob Pennino’s path to painting was not the traditional art-school-tostudio-apprentice-to-gallery route. While the Montreal native grew up in a family where many took up art as a hobby, he spent about 15 years in the construction business before following his creative passion full-time. “A lot of people thought I was crazy to change my field and to pursue my dream to be a professional modern artist” says Pennino, “but I took the courage to go for it all the way.” Pennino’s large works are inspired by nature and intended to inspire positivity. “I always look to create something that puts a smile on the viewer’s face, with a mix of colors that brings a sense of light to the space,” says Pennino of his textured abstractions. “I also take my influences from travel; each time I paint, I try to do something new.”
Avril Franco, Courtesy of Rob Pennino
His works can also be found around the world, gracing the walls of an apartment in Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, “as well as homes in New York, Germany, England, California and Toronto.”
ROB PENNINO Galerie 203
Pennino, who is represented by Montreal’s Galerie 203, notes that Instagram has brought him plenty of attention. “When you start out as a modern artist, people don’t just ring your doorbell and say they want to buy a painting,” he says. “Having gallery representation and Instagram has helped put my art out in the world.” Indeed, his paintings have developed something of a celebrity following, with actors, models and sports figures collecting Pennino’s art. “I think people respond to the work visually,” he says, “but I always include a message behind each piece. My clients like that—it gives them a boost.” ICONICLIFE.COM

APPET Renee Dee-I-Y
When time counts, here are 8 ways to wow your cocktail party guests with minimal fuss. If I can do it, so can you! By Renee Dee
W
hether you planned your party months ago, or spontaneously invited guests over for the evening, every host loves a good hack to make holiday entertaining easy. How do you make it look special with a minimal amount of effort and no last-minute rushing around? For the last three decades, I’ve been perfecting my entertaining game to make it look like I spent all day preparing when those who know me, know I never have a day to prepare. I love to keep a file of elegant appetizers I typically serve. While I am completely driven to make it special for my guests, I’m a collector of ideas that work for me that I’d like to share with you.

PLAN AHEAD
• Buy the wine you’ll serve and get whites into the fridge early. • Find the holiday dishes you plan to use—they may be packed away—and wash your glassware and special dishes the day before your event. • If you are arranging flowers, do it two days ahead so your flowers are in full bloom. • A week before, have your cloth cocktail napkins pressed at the dry cleaner or purchase cute novelty napkins. • Pull out candles or simple white votives, and make sure your lighter works. 110

It takes planning to pull it all together at the last minute, right? Create your appetizer menu and do your shopping early. Having everything you need before the big day is a big stress reliever.
FIND SIMPLE RECIPES
I like appetizers that are more like a list of ingredients that need assembly than a recipe. Here are a few of my faves:
BASIL TOMATO MOZZARELLA BITES ON A SPOON
Assuming you’ve already bought a collection of pretty metal appetizer spoons, all you need is mini buffalo mozzarella balls, cherry tomatoes, basil and olive oil. Rinse the mozzarella, wash the tomatoes and slice both in halves. Toss with olive oil and minced fresh basil along with some whole small basil leaves. Place on spoons and arrange on a simple rectangular tray.
SHRIMP WITH CAJUN SEASONING ON A PLANK
This is a professional presentation without a lot of fuss. You’ll need two pounds of medium-to-large fresh shrimp (fully peeled and deveined by your friendly fish monger at the seafood counter). Have your party set up ready to go and sauté this just before your guests arrive. Rinse the shrimp in cold water, drain and dry, sauté in olive oil and sprinkle with your favorite cajun seasoning before pulling from the heat. Spoon on to an attractive cutting board or plank, and garnish with lime and parsley.
SALMON AND CAVIAR PUFF PASTRY TOWERS
This one is a crowd pleaser and a project. Speaking of planning ahead, two weeks before your event, order puff-pastry cups online. During your grocery run, pick up a package of salmon gravlax, a tin of golden caviar, and radish and lemongrass for garnish. Put the salmon in the puffed pastry, bake as directed and cool slightly. Garnish with the golden caviar first, then add thinly sliced radish and lemongrass.
FRESH VEGGIE ROLL UPS
Karl Allgaeuer / Shutterstock
These are nice on their own or served with an elegant fresh veggie dip. Shop for zucchini, carrots, red pepper, cream cheese spread with chives and microgreens. Wash all your veggies and pat dry. Slice zucchini and peeled carrot lengthwise and spread cream cheese with chives on one side. Roll the zucchini and carrots into rolls and garnish with slivers of red pepper and microgreens.

TAKE APPETIZER SHORTCUTS LOBSTER TARTS
Available with sherry sauce, cheese and chives, and risotto Williams Sonoma’s Assorted Lobster Tartlets are super yummy and super easy, as you order them ahead and pull them from your freezer when you are ready to warm them up. Be a pro and plate them up beautifully. Garnish with fresh, green dill and chives.
SUSHI TAKE OUT
Early afternoon the day of your party, you can do same-day sushi take out. Order your favorite very simple roll and ask your sushi maker to make the pieces very small with little rice. Order 18 pieces and be ready with a jalapeño aioli and Sriracha sauce to garnish them; first a drop of aioli and then a red drop of Sriracha on top of that. Serve on a beautiful tray.
ANYTHING ON ENDIVE
I’ve found that a little spoonful of my favorite traditional chicken salad, curry chicken salad or dill salmon salad dolloped onto an endive leaf makes a pretty presentation and a flavorful bite.
DON’T SKIP DESSERT

Remember that all parties have a sweet ending. Make your life easy by ordering delicious and elegant Harry & David Holiday Petit Fours. They are festive and fun and make for a pretty plate.

MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL Kolpakova Svetlana / Shutterstock
There’s no reason to use a plastic container or pre-made Costco tray at your elegant party. Puh-lease! Make it special for your guests by using pretty dishes and bowls, and put all sauces and dips in attractive bowls, too. Add a runner or elegant place mats layered to create an overall elegant look. Put utensils in a fork-knife-spoon caddy and serve on real appetizer dishes. I love six-inch white square appetizer plates and pressed glass appetizer plates. I’ve used both of these so many times; they are so worth the investment.

An award-winning Scottsdale home sounds a high note for PHX Architecture and designer Holly Wright. By Nora Burba Trulsson
S
oaring glass walls, deeply cantilevered overhangs and dramatic stone accents mark the design of a gracious residence in Scottsdale, Arizona, which was honored with a 2021 Gold Nugget Grand Award by PCBC, the West Coast’s largest homebuilding trade show.
“It was an absolute honor to design a modern dream house and interiors for our clients,” says architect Erik Peterson, founder of PHX Architecture, who worked on the home with his firm’s creative director, Stuart Jon Traynor. “This Gold Nugget is a testament to the creativity and teamwork that made this home such an incredible project.”
Eric Cassee
While the abode’s effortless blending of architecture and nature garnered praise, the path to the prestigious honor was marked by two mountains and a grand piano. “When we walked the desert lot with the homeowners, we saw that the property looks right at Camelback Mountain in the distance one way and Pinnacle Peak the other,” Traynor explains.

While the home’s orientation and banks of window walls focus on the jaw-dropping vistas, another consideration of its layout was the couple’s grand piano, an instrument the husband plays regularly as a hobby. “Besides our art, the piano was the only thing we brought with us from our previous house,” the wife says, “and we wanted it to be a focal point in the great room. It’s a concert grand piano, which is about 9 feet long. It’s hard to wrap your head around how big that is.” The core of the 7,500-square-foot dwelling is a voluminous living room with modern interior design, with glass on either side for mountain views and enough space for not only seating but also for the piano to shine. The owners’ suite was placed to one side of the living room, while the kitchen, dining room, theater, game room and guest quarters flank the other side. Strategic materials and numerous details lend drama to the structure. “A stone-clad architectural wall bisects the house, inside and out,” Traynor notes. “The stone complements the roof ’s copper fascia, and together they stitch the house into the natural desert landscape.” In the living room, the rugged stone wall is pierced by a fireplace that warms the living room and a glass wine cabinet. An angled kitchen island, which can seat 10, was conceived specifically for the husband, who enjoys cooking and entertaining. “It was designed so that the guests won’t be on the same side as the refrigerator-sink-cooktop triangle,” the wife says, “but we can still be by our guests while cooking.”

Interior designer Holly Wright played off the uplifting architecture and natural materials to conceptualize cool-hued, comfortable rooms that are casual enough for everyday living yet functional enough for entertaining. “The homeowners didn’t want a stark look,” Wright explains. “They wanted some warmth in the lighting and furnishings.” In addition to incorporating such surface materials as concrete-hued plaster for accent walls and porcelain tile flooring, Wright designed a three-sided sectional to balance the living room’s volume. “One of the sections faces the piano,” she describes, “another is situated for the views, and the remaining one is toward the fireplace.” The interior designer included many special touches throughout the house and paid close attention to lighting, ensuring that the interior looks as good by night as it does by day. A framed piece of silk art in the living room slides up to reveal a TV. In a hallway behind the kitchen, the wall above the wet bar is fitted with undulating wood panels, backlit for special effect, while the bar’s onyx countertop is underlit for a soft glow in the luxury home. The dining room’s light fixture features 86 pendants, hung at different heights to give an effect of motion. In the master bedroom, the custom bed features a built-in headboard with reflected light and backlighting. Outdoors, desert gardens by landscape designer Marvin Lunt link the home to its setting. A main feature of the back patio is a sunken fire pit next to a negative-edge pool. “The pool’s triangular shape points right at Camelback Mountain,” Traynor notes. “If you sit on the benches surrounding the fire pit, you’re at eye level with the water and the scenery.”
John Woodcock
Recently completed, the home hit the right note for the owners. “When we were installing the furniture,” Wright recalls, “the husband sat at the piano and played beautiful music for us. It was like our own private concert. I knew then that this house was right for them.”

ISLAND A chic luxury vacation awaits at this private and pristine Hawaiian paradise. By ICONIC LIFE Photography Courtesy of Four Seasons Lanai

n Lanai, it happens. You go on a four-hour hike and don’t run into a single person. One of the smallest of Hawaii’s islands, Lanai is home to only 3,200 residents. It’s also a place that clings tightly to its virtually untouched, pristine culture and way of life.
The exclusivity and VIP vibe of Lanai is unlike any of the other Hawaiian Islands. Off the beaten path and far from crowded beaches littered with people, it is completely unspoiled. Though very different from what most people envision when they think of a Hawaiian destination, Lanai is full of mysteries that create quite an allure. Ninety-eight percent of the island is privately owned by billionaire Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle. Ellison purchased it in 2012 from David Murdock, who gained it from James Dole as part of Murdock’s acquisition of Castle & Cooke, a real estate and development company that owned first-class hotels and golf courses on the island. 124
ICONICLIFE.COM
But the history of Lanai dates back much further than that. As the story goes, in the 1500s, the son of Maui’s chief caused so much chaos when he destroyed a crop of breadfruit trees that, as a form of punishment, he was banished to the then-uninhabited landmass, known to the Maui people as the “Island of Spirits.” Legend has it that the son, while there, rid the land of its evil spirits. He named the island Lanai, meaning “Day of Conquest.” People soon began migrating from Maui, and thus began Lanai’s life as a settled island. In 1922, James Dole, founder of Dole Pineapple, purchased the island for $1.1 million. He grew it into the biggest pineapple producer in the world, and it remained such until overseas production of the tropical fruit drove prices down, leaving the Hawaiian plantations in the dust. In 1992, the island said farewell to its pineapple production with its final harvest of the fruit. The owner of the island at this time, David Murdock, switched gears and decided to develop Lanai as a tourism hot spot.

After pouring $30 million a year for numerous years into the island without seeing much return, Murdock decided to sell. Larry Ellison was the highest bidder. Tourism was the focus for Ellison. However, the business magnate wanted to create a VIP experience that would make travelers feel as though they were on their own private island—a place where they would be treated like royalty. Four Seasons Resort Lanai is Ellison’s dream actualized. The resort’s Alii Royal Suite carries a price tag of $21,000 night, earning it the title of the most expensive hotel suite in Hawaii. Radiating luxury and classic design, Four Seasons Resort Lanai is a chic respite from the stress of everyday life. Simply walk through the wide-open, airy entrance and release any tension you brought with you. From there, you’ll head to your room—a relaxing stroll that takes you through the property’s lush jungle-like greenery that’s alive with the joyful chirps of local wildlife. Two lagoon-style pools with waterfalls and Jacuzzis offer an idyllic setting to spend your day—there’s even an adults-only pool area for a more relaxing escape—but don’t
overlook Hulopoe Bay with its sandy beach that fronts the resort. Epic snorkeling awaits in the large tide pools. Explore the waters on your own or join a beautifully guided tour to exclusive snorkeling spots. Complimentary snorkeling gear is available at the resort’s beach kiosk. One of the Four Seasons’ biggest draws is Manele Golf Course. Whether golf is your game or not, you will appreciate the breathtaking beauty of this Jack Nicklaus-designed course in which every hole has ocean views. On some, you’ll even find yourself staring right over the edge of stunning cliffs that drop down to lava rocks and crashing waves below. Ellison also brought some of the world’s best dining to Lanai. As the owner of the ultratrendy sushi brand, Nobu, he was able to open a location of the restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort. Nobu Lanai is a dining experience unlike any you’ve ever had. Whether you sit at the sushi bar or the private balcony lounges, you’ll enjoy Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s top-rated sushi and Japanese dishes against a panoramic backdrop of the ocean and the glistening stars above. Regardless of your vacation preferences, on Billionaire Island, your experience will never be anything less than sheer luxury. ICONICLIFE.COM

The jumping numeral discs peek out beneath it, so you can fully appreciate each jump of the single minutes, tens of minutes and hours. H. MOSER STREAMLINER PERPETUAL CALENDAR
H. Moser
Typically, perpetual calendars are instantly recognizable due to an indication that shows the leap year function. H. Moser & Cie turned that notion on its head when it first debuted the Perpetual 1 movement, which only has one window that displays the date. The month is discreetly shown by a small red and white central hand. The leap-year indication is hidden on the back of the watch. To the untrained eye, it looks like a simple date watch, not one of horology’s most impressive complications. This year, H. Moser introduced an updated movement and added it to the new Streamliner collection. This collection is beloved for its fantastic integrated bracelet, which is ultra-comfortable. CHF 49,000.

YouTube celebs Chad Perkins and Sara Ahlgrim welcome you into their bourbon bunker.

K
entucky-born and bred, Chad Perkins and Sara Ahlgrim grew up surrounded by bourbon culture. Considering that the Bluegrass State makes 95 percent of the world’s bourbon supply, it’s no surprise that the duo felt drawn to the spirit given local access to the best of the best.
Sara Cooley of Casey and Sara Pictures
Today, Chad and Sara lead one of the biggest communities of proof-hounds on YouTube with blind flights, tastings and bourbon challenges. How did they get started and what do they know that will influence how you feel about this brown liquor that is increasingly difficult to find? The couple met when Perkins’s production company was tasked with shooting a video at Ahlgrim’s place of work: a restaurant group that was opening a bourbon bar. The project launched Chad and Sara’s business relationship and friendship. In 2016, their combined passions for video production and the best bourbon led them to create It’s Bourbon Night. What at first was an interesting way to share a common interest and palate turned into a YouTube channel with more than 400 videos and 78,000 subscribers, as well as a deeply rooted romance between the two bourbon lovers, who eventually married.
Though they’ve found great success in focusing on the best bourbon, it was a slow burn. “When we first got into it, people cared less about bourbon. I used to be able to get the best stuff because nobody was looking for it,” Ahlgrim remembers. Then came the “Bourbon Boom.” In 2019, off-premise bourbon sales grew 12.9 percent, bringing the bourbon industry to $1.78 billion, according to Nielsen data. Bourbon was also the third fastest-growing spirit in 2019, beaten only by tequila and rye whiskey. What sparked such a significant increase in interest in the barrel-aged liquor, let alone the desire to find the best bourbon? “I think people are attracted to the story behind bourbon and what goes into this product. Bourbon and whiskey have that rich texture and a certain level of quality going into the barrels,” Ahlgrim explains. “It has to have the time. There are so many generational families involved in the industry. There’s so much opportunity for great stories there. I feel like that’s really one of the main reasons why it has skyrocketed so much. I mean, also it’s delicious.” “We see the trend of limited editions coming out each year that keep going up in price. You know, $20 or $30 every year,” Perkins says. “But the good thing is, there ICONICLIFE.COM

are still a lot of great bourbons that you can find down on the bottom shelf. One of our sayings from the beginning has always been no “bottom-shelf shaming.” You can take $15 into a liquor store, and as long as it has a good selection, you can walk out with a pretty exceptional bourbon.”
“We’re trying to give it a speakeasy vibe,” the couple explained of the space. “You can go into the library and check something out, but you have to return it.” No matter your beverage of choice, you’re sure to find It’s Bourbon Night both entertaining and educational. It’s also important for Perkins and Ahlgrim to remain authentic and trustworthy when reviewing bottles. “We don’t do paid advertising or endorsements with any brand in particular, and that’s because, at the end of the day, we want to make sure that there’s no question about our reviews being truthful and honest,” Ahlgrim says. Another of the couple’s main viewpoints is that there’s no wrong way to drink bourbon, despite how other connoisseurs believe it should be consumed. The best bourbon is what’s best for your own palate. “Some people say, ‘You have to drink it neat. Don’t mix it with anything. Don’t put any ice or any water in it.’ But we say drink it however you want, especially if you’re first trying to get into it,” Perkins notes. “Start with training wheels—cola, ginger ale, anything like that—then eventually you start developing a taste for the bourbon, and you no longer want those. “Then wean yourself off the mixers. That’s how we got to drinking bourbon straight,” he adds. “I would suggest starting with a mixture, with bourbon-forward cocktails, because you do want to get the flavor.” You can learn so much from this duo. Dive in and as Chad says, “drink more bourbon.”

WHAT’S ON YOUR BAR CART? Chad and Sara’s most-watched video shares what you should have ready to serve to guests from your bar cart. Selections include more approachable bourbons that won’t “fry” your palate as Chad says with a high-proof bourbon. It also contains selections more readily available, keeping the rare finds your bourbon bunker for special occasions. Listen for fun phrases like “it’s a wheater,” proof hounds and bourbon snob. Other great videos share “Ten Bourbons to Try Before You Die” and “Best of 2021 Flight Fight.” Have fun! • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

When it comes to their home, the couple has transformed it into their bourbon bunker—essentially, a newly remodeled house that has been completely taken over by bourbon. Their living spaces, known as the uncorking set and the Flight Fight stage, are used mainly for the show, with a stair-step bar and various shelves that house the best bourbon. Then, there’s a room where they stock what doesn’t fit on the other shelves, as well as a “bourbon library.”

Waterford
WOW! F
The history of Waterford crystal dates back to 1783 when Quaker merchant George Penrose and his nephew William Penrose set out to “create the finest quality crystal for drinking vessels and objects of beauty for the home.” A secret compound of materials, including the purest white sand from nearby Wicklow, gave the glass its perfectly unmarred translucency, while polishing the finished product resulted in the sparkling shine for which Waterford is now renowned. Adding lead to the molten glass makes it softer, allowing it to be carved into intricate designs.
The famed Lismore pattern with its signature diamond and wedge cuts inspired by the windows and turrets of Lismore Castle remains the most popular crystal pattern in the world. It was created in 1952. Much emulated, the classic design adorns stemware, tumblers, vases, bowls and picture frames. Today, Waterford can be found in the finest restaurants in the world, and chandeliers made from the celebrated crystal hang in Westminster Abbey, Windsor Castle and the Kennedy Center. And 2021 marks the 21st time that Waterford will count down the final seconds of the year for the world, as the sparkling Time’s Square New Year’s Eve Ball is cloaked in a dazzling display of 2,688 crystal triangles. Waterford Crystal is still produced in the seaport village from which it took its name, and the House of Waterford Crystal Factory Tour continues to attract visitors from around the globe. The name endures as a symbol of timeless, chic elegance.
