I am Connie Taylor, a 29-year-old fashion designer out of St Louis, Mo. Formally known as Constance Taylor Jr. You read that right. I am a junior, my mom has the same name. I’ve been interested in fashion since I could pick out my own clothes. My style has always been different. My aunt told me I use to always say I wanted to make my own clothes all the time when I was younger. Never being able to find anything quite right for me while shopping furthered my passion to design my own clothes. But being able to design for other people is something I could’ve never imagined. It still amazes me to this day. I’m fascinated with the response I get from my clients when they see what I’ve designed. It makes me always go that extra mile to bring the design to the next level. I’ve been designing since about May 2012, after graduating college with a B.A in Psychology. I just couldn’t shake my true passion. I started with customizing clothes and shoes, making hair bows, bowties and tutus on the side. A year later, my granny bought me a sewing machine and I taught myself to sew. It took a lot of research, reading, videos and practice, but I did it. I was influenced by famous designers and their passion for their craft. When I see their work, it makes me want to work even harder to get to their level and beyond. My line, also named Connie Taylor, is inspired by high fashion looks that would not be found in store. It also includes everyday looks that can be worn to spice up your wardrobe. My designs are different, yet very fashion forward. I never stick to the same designs which keep them fresh and new. I am very creative. I design anything that inspires me. If I see an old mirror at the thrift store, I may be inspired to bring it back to life. I love designing looks that are different and stand out. Fashion is about expression. A way to make a statement without saying a word. I may be inspired to design a man’s look one day and a woman’s look the next. I can’t leave the children out at all! If they’re anything like I was as a child, they’re big on expressing themselves through their clothes as well. Most of my women’s design ideas spark from items I may want for myself. I do not like to wear what everyone else is wearing. Nor do I like to stay within popular design trends. Like this Peek-a-Boo Jacket, Glitz top, and High waist skirt. [ Continue on Page 37 ]

Accessories can be real statement pieces and a way to show your personality in an otherwise classic outfit. Fashion accessories are a great way to spice up any wardrobe, especially one that could use an updating. Are you interested in updating your appearance, at least in terms of your fashion? If you are, you may not only want to examine the latest in clothing fashion trends, but also the latest trends in fashion accessories. Fashion accessories are rapidly increasing in popularity, particularly in our celebrity-obsessed culture. But many of us still do not know exactly how to use them to our best advantage. The term “fashion accessories is very broad and includes a number of products. Just like fashion clothing pieces, accessories come in virtually every size, shape and style under the sun. There are fashion accessories that are designed for children, teens, men, women, petite 8 sized, and plus sized individuals. Below are a few of the major fashion accessory items you might want consider in order to keep your look current and expand your coordination options.

The most well known fashion accessory is of course, jewellery. For teenagers and children, fashion jewelry pieces that are popular often include colourful, oversized pieces, as well as charm necklaces or charm bracelets. For men, a popular piece of jewellery often includes large pendant necklaces, many of which display a cross or another popular or meaningful symbol. As for women, popular pieces of fashion jewelry include watches, earnings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, pins, and so forth. Another major fashion accessory that you might want to look at is a new handbag. While purses can also be trendy, it is the handbag that has become a real status symbol and major fashion accessory. They come in a huge array of different styles so it is common to own more than one if your budget allows. In fact, many women out there like to match their fashion accessories, including their purses and handbags, with the clothing that they wear. [Continue on Page 24] 9 Updating your handbag every season can be an easy and relatively inexpensive way to update your whole look.

BEHIND THE LOOK WITH ANDREA T.
TAKES A LOOK AT YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING FROM A HOLISTIC PERSPECTIVE . FOCUSING ON SUBJECTS LIKE EATING RIGHT, AND WHEN. WHEN TO EXCERSISE ALSO WHAT IS YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS AND HOW NOT THINKING RIGHT CAN LEAD TO BAD PHYSICAL HABITS.
CREATING HEALTHY HABITS
Creating Healthy Habits: Have you started your 2018, with the mindset of becoming a healthier you or get in shape? How about losing those extra pounds that you put on during the holidays? I would like to encourage you to revisit those goals of improving your health and take your thought pattern from the non-physical realm to tangible actions. We set out with the best intentions but sometimes our momentum diminishes with time. We subconsciously go about our lives on autopilot. Those things that you do every day, like brushing your teeth in the morning or driving to work. These are done without thinking because you have done them so long that they are second nature. Now we should create that habit of health in your everyday life. It takes approximately 2-3 months to create a habit. This is something that needs to be done every day consistently in order for it to stick. Making small simple goals are easier to manage and adhere too. Like eating two pieces of fruit a day, or take one flight of stairs at work and then take the elevator to your destination. The subconscious don’t like big changes, it will set up resistance. That’s why small changes are easier to manage. Easy, right? Then start now. Go out and buy fruit for a week, and make sure it’s in a location that you will see it, grab it and eat it Sustaining the motivation behind starting new behaviors can be challenging but keeping a journal or food log is a great way to see your thoughts and watch them manifest to positive life style changes. Tell others that you are going to be around often what you are trying to do. They will help to keep you on track. You can also use the buddy system and have someone go through this wonderful modification with you. This will aid in your accountable. Use triggers to break those negative behaviors and thought patterns. Create new eating locations, ones that serve more nutritious food and salads. Cook at home more often, get out that Crockpot and start make meals for 2 or more days. Meal prep is another way to make the most of your health journey. This can save you time and support in controlling your weight. Keep reminding yourself your goals and your healthier future. Always be prepared, to do a walk 5, 10, or 15 mins as long as you are moving toward your goal. Keep your walking shoes with you at all times. You will always have an opportunity to walk. Make it fun, grab a friend or a pet and hit a path. Make a play list and you will find yourself walking longer than expected. Also, get a pedometer or download an app on your phone. People who track their workout tend to do 27% better than those who don’t. Now that you have some health nuggets in your tool box, this should assist you with your health journey and keep you on track. ICONIQUE MAGAZINE MARCH 2018 VOL 1
Sex, Hip Hop, and Fashion have been in a Ménage à Trois from the get-go. Designer-clad denizens spout their message while “makin’ it rain” dolla bills. Once a voice for urban organisms to holla back, Hip Hop is now a twerk fest hook up where hoes, Molly and Percocet, facilitate the exhaustless turnup. Mind-altering beats copulate with repetitive sophomoric lyrics, to climax Hip Hop’s singular message of sex a la carte! I miss the times when a long-legged, rainbow-haired broad named Hip Hop seductively called to me through the 808’s. She wooed me wearing brightly colored Jordans and blatantly flirted with anyone in earshot. My conscious mind would sit up wide awake, energized and engaged in any game she wanted to play. She was Mecca, a holy pilgrimage I took when the world said, “no you can’t, go sit down!” Hip Hop stands tall. She is the conductor of the money train that got the neighborhood dealer off the streets and into a recording booth. It a fist-pumpin’ mother queen letting you know how shit would be “If I ruled the world.” Today Hip-Hop has been pimped out; no longer a vehicle to address issues of substance. She’s exploited to control, subdue and distract young minds. “Cold like Minnesota and Gucci gang doing cocaine” blankets our timelines over movements such as Black Lives Matter, Bullying, #MeToo. Sexuality floods our senses no longer hidden under the covers of our bedrooms she’s out in the public for everyone to see, feel and hear, whether we like it or not. So as we move forward we must find a way to marry the social awareness of Hip Hop yesterday, fashion’s ever-evolving face, and the liberality and permissiveness of sex today.

If your wardrobe is filled with classic pieces that flatter your body shape and suit your colouring, then simply choosing a new trendy handbag can instantly bring your look up to the minute. Travel bags are also considered a fashion accessory, but differ from handbags in that a lot of them are designed for both sexes. A travel bag is generally a small bag that can be used as carry-on luggage for a plane ride, a nappy/diaper bag or a laptop carrying case. It can also be the so called “man bag” that is increasing in popularity all the time. Many major fashion labels also have their own luggage line as well. Shoes are also a fashion accessory, although many do not necessarily consider them to be. Most often, women’s shoes are associated as fashion accessories, as opposed to men’s shoes. One of the reasons for this is the amazing array of women’s shoe style available, for example: athletic shoes, casual sandals, elegant sandals, flat dress shoes, stilettos, kitten heels, sling backs, mules, pumps and the list goes on. As with handbags and purses, most women own multiple pairs of shoes and aim to coordinate their shoes, especially for work, with the rest of their ensemble. Shoes can make or break an outfit, so think about the type of image you want to portray and make sure your shoes fit with that theme. Belts are also a major fashion accessory. While for many men and boys, belts are not necessarily a fashion accessory as much as a fashion necessity to hold their pants up; the same isn’t true for women. Women’s belts come in a number of different sizes, shapes, and styles and virtually every season there is a new “must-have” style. There is everything from casual, crocheted belts to wear with jeans, to elegant, black leather belts as a pair of slimline black trousers for work. Belts, handbags, purses, travel bags, jewellery and shoes are just a few of the many fashion accessories that you can use to make a good outfit into a great one. 24

#1 Always start with a clean, moisturized face! Be sure to cleanse/moisturize daily and exfoliate weekly #2 Start with a good foundation that matches both your chest and neck! Liquid and cream foundations are my top choices for a foundation base, very easy to blend into the skin #3 Add a little dimension! Make sure you highlight with a foundation/concealer 1-2 shades lighter than your foundation and contour with a foundation/concealer 1-2 shades darker than your foundation. Chisel those cheeks and set both with powder #4 Get those brows together! Makes sure you use a dark or light brown eyebrow pencil or pomade to fill in sparse areas of your eyebrows and use concealer to clean it up #5 Make those eyes pop! Add a little mascara to your top and bottom lashes to make your eyes pop #6 Add a pop of color! Finish up with your favorite lippie and blush to bring a little color to your face #7 Set the look! Spray your finishing spray to set your foundation for the day and ensure it lasts a long time #8 Enjoy being Painted Pretty

Mo’ Money…Mo’ Problems? by Brittany Leigh The old saying is that the more money you make, the more problems that arise, but for everyone who has been paying attention the opposite seems to be the case for this Queen of Comedy. It may be safe to say that the country has been bombarded by a multitude of outbursts from comedy “legend” Mo’Nique. What began as her request for the public to join her in boycotting the newly popular dating component, Netflix, has turned into an outright cry for attention. When she first decided to come forward about her interaction with representatives over at Netflix, Mo’Nique accused them of being color and gender bias. While some people have voiced their support for the self-proclaimed “most decorated comedian”, others have ironically found humor in her claims. One person in particular was The Breakfast Club’s Charlamagne; who coined Mo’Nique “Donkey of the Day”. In many aspects, the title may have been befitting. In the midst of her complaints about Netflix and them having offered her a measly $500,000, she made comparisons to the monies paid to Chris Rock (African-American), Dave Chappelle (African-American), and Amy Schumer (Female); which has raised the question…how can they be color and gender bias? In a recent interview with The Breakfast Club where Mo’Nique may have called herself confronting Lenard A.K.A. Charlamagne the question was asked, in so many words, if she was attempting to make a personal situation a social one. After a number of back and forth rants we still have yet to receive a clear answer. Some may be moved to say that women and minorities have been given the short end of the stick when it comes to compensation in comparison to their opposing counterparts, but in this case I think that the facts may just speak for themselves. Chris Rock reportedly garnered $40 million total from Netflix for two specials after two back to back tours (No Apologies, Total Blackout), Dave Chappelle was given a check for $60 million for three specials after having retiring and basically disappearing and leaving his fans begging for a return, Amy Schumer received a payout of $13 million for her specials right after selling out Madison Square Garden twice while on tour, and Mo’Nique; well, she did a movie back in 2016 that a lot of people liked. What a lot of people have to realize is the name of the game in the entertainment industry is being relevant in the moment. The fact that it has to be a wonderment of IF you have the ability to attract views coupled with reports of one being difficult to work with almost entitles you to a smaller check. Was $500,000 too low and possibly insulting? Possibly. However, Mo’Nique probably should have done as Whoopi told her during her interview on The View and called her seasoned comedy sisters before reacting. But, who knows? Her media frenzy may just work out in her favor and give her the offers she’s hoping for or at the least cause a light bulb to go off and spawn a tour. We’ll just have to wait and see. I have been writing professionally for 6 years, am a radio 26 show host on the Indie.Penned.It Radio show on Nuu Beat Radio, an entertainment manager, and small business consultant out of Indianapolis, IN.

CONNIE TAYLOR DESIGNS The Peek-a-Boo Jacket is the main piece, made from a quilted bonded knit cream lurex fabric. I wanted a piece that was very different and high fashion to wear for my birthday to show off my shoulder tattoo and a little thigh. It started as a jacket/dress with a thigh opening and belt closure. As the season changed, I altered it to be a shorter jacket so I can continue to enjoy it. I wanted a sexy piece that I could dress up or dress down with some nice jeans and off the shoulder tank. I dressed it up with this Glitz top made from a glitter knit lightweight fabric and a red spandex high waist skirt to add some color. The Peek-a-Boo Jacket alone took me over 12 hours to design and execute to my satisfaction. The entire look took about 19 working hours. It can be worn at a very high fashion event, or just out on the town. The dramatic hood makes for a very flirty and upscale look. It can be worn by someone who is conservative as well as the most outgoing individual. I added the buttons for a very elegant look. The swirl pattern really intrigued me as an item that would not be seen on a regular jacket you would buy in store. I try to take everything I see or don’t see rather and channel it into my work to make it more functional or put my own spin on it. I try to design something better than I did the day before. I am not consumed with what people think of me/my work. I just do what I love and keep advancing. Never let anyone tell you that your dream is too big.
