Fashion accessories are rapidly increasing in popularity, particularly in our celebrity-obsessed culture. But many of us still do not know exactly how to use them to our best advantage. The term “fashion accessories is very broad and includes a number of products. Just like fashion clothing pieces, accessories come in virtually every size, shape and style under the sun. The most well known fashion accessory is of course, jewellery. For teenagers and children, fashion jewelry pieces that are popular often include colourful, oversized pieces, as well as charm necklaces or charm bracelets. For men, a popular piece of jewellery often includes large pendant necklaces, many of which display a cross or another popular or meaningful symbol. As for women, popular pieces of fashion jewelry include watches, earnings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, pins, and so forth. Another major fashion accessory that you might want to look at is a new handbag. While purses can also be trendy, it is the handbag that has become a real status symbol and major fashion accessory. They come in a huge array of different styles so it is common to own more than one if your budget allows. In fact, many women out there like to match their fashion accessories, including their purses and handbags, with the clothing that they wear. [Continue on Page 24] 9 Updating your handbag every season can be an easy and relatively inexpensive way to update your whole look.

BEHIND THE LOOK WITH ANDREA T.
TAKES A LOOK AT YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING FROM A HOLISTIC PERSPECTIVE . FOCUSING ON SUBJECTS LIKE EATING RIGHT, AND WHEN. WHEN TO EXCERSISE ALSO WHAT IS YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS AND HOW NOT THINKING RIGHT CAN LEAD TO BAD PHYSICAL HABITS.
CREATING HEALTHY HABITS Get happier with my magic formula (plus recipe!) Summer is around the corner! More sunny days and warmer weather, so let’s get happy!!! What makes you smile? Laugh? Go giddy with glee? For some, it’s a walk barefoot through the grass. For another, it’s a spin on a roller coaster, a solo movie date, or a perfectly ripe mango. So… when was the last time you did something that makes you happy? If it’s been awhile, consider this: Happiness lowers stress levels, increases immune system function, and lowers your risk of disease. It also makes life easier. The Magic Formula for Daily Pleasure Doing one pleasurable thing per day (or more!) is the most powerful antidote for gray, boring, or stressful days. Try this: • Make an “I love” list. List everything that you enjoy—nothing is too small or too large. If you enjoy it, get it on the list. • Take a look at how you spend your days. When could you fit in a little pleasure? Perhaps you could leave the office at lunch to walk in the park? Maybe you could play your favorite music while doing the dishes? Book yourself a massage this weekend? • Repeat daily—or more often, as needed. To get you started down the road of pleasure, give this luscious recipe a try: Mango Cream Prep Time: 10 minutes Serves 4 1 mango, peeled and diced 1/4 cup orange juice 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon agave nectar (optional) 1 cup organic whipping cream or carton of soft tofu or large ripe banana • Process first 4 ingredients in a blender. • Blend for 1 minute, or until pureed. • Pour puree into a medium bowl. • Beat whipping cream at medium speed with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. If using tofu or banana whir in a food processor or blender until smooth and creamy. • Fold whipped cream or tofu or banana into mango puree, using a knife to swirl in a marbled effect. AUTUMN LAWRENCE I am a 8 year old talent here in St. Louis. I am signed by an agency and have experience doing commercial, print and runway. I have walked in several runways fashion shows. I got into runway at the age of 5 after my 20 year old brother died of an drug overdose. My brother was my best friend and treated me like a little princess. I miss him everyday. Runway gave me an outlet that helped me with my emotions. I enjoy runway shows the most because it has really helped me come out of my shell and gives me a feeling of power and beauty. My preferred month of submission is July. I chose this month because that is the month my brother passed away. The month my life changed. I want to 20encourage other kids to let them know that no matter what bad thing happens in their life, you can still go after their dreams! If your wardrobe is filled with classic pieces that flatter your body shape and suit your colouring, then simply choosing a new trendy handbag can instantly bring your look up to the minute. Travel bags are also considered a fashion accessory, but differ from handbags in that a lot of them are designed for both sexes. A travel bag is generally a small bag that can be used as carry-on luggage for a plane ride, a nappy/diaper bag or a laptop carrying case. It can also be the so called “man bag” that is increasing in popularity all the time. Many major fashion labels also have their own luggage line as well. Shoes are also a fashion accessory, although many do not necessarily consider them to be. Most often, women’s shoes are associated as fashion accessories, as opposed to men’s shoes. One of the reasons for this is the amazing array of women’s shoe style available, for example: athletic shoes, casual sandals, elegant sandals, flat dress shoes, stilettos, kitten heels, sling backs, mules, pumps and the list goes on. As with handbags and purses, most women own multiple pairs of shoes and aim to coordinate their shoes, especially for work, with the rest of their ensemble. Shoes can make or break an outfit, so think about the type of image you want to portray and make sure your shoes fit with that theme. Belts are also a major fashion accessory. While for many men and boys, belts are not necessarily a fashion accessory as much as a fashion necessity to hold their pants up; the same isn’t true for women. Women’s belts come in a number of different sizes, shapes, and styles and virtually every season there is a new “must-have” style. There is everything from casual, crocheted belts to wear with jeans, to elegant, black leather belts as a pair of slimline black trousers for work. Belts, handbags, purses, travel bags, jewellery and shoes are just a few of the many fashion accessories that you can use to make a good outfit into a great one. 24

#1 Always start with a clean, moisturized face! Be sure to cleanse/moisturize daily and exfoliate weekly #2 Start with a good foundation that matches both your chest and neck! Liquid and cream foundations are my top choices for a foundation base, very easy to blend into the skin #3 Add a little dimension! Make sure you highlight with a foundation/concealer 1-2 shades lighter than your foundation and contour with a foundation/concealer 1-2 shades darker than your foundation. Chisel those cheeks and set both with powder #4 Get those brows together! Makes sure you use a dark or light brown eyebrow pencil or pomade to fill in sparse areas of your eyebrows and use concealer to clean it up #5 Make those eyes pop! Add a little mascara to your top and bottom lashes to make your eyes pop #6 Add a pop of color! Finish up with your favorite lippie and blush to bring a little color to your face #7 Set the look! Spray your finishing spray to set your foundation for the day and ensure it lasts a long time #8 Enjoy being Painted Pretty

WAKANDA FOREVER! (FOREVA, EVA) Once upon a time there was a land in Africa that was home to some of the most advanced technology, tribes of beautiful melanated people, where the strongest of warriors were women, and traditional rituals were a thing. This uncolonized land became ruled by T’Challa, the Black Panther, and it was called Wakanda. The very first movie released under Marvel Cinematic Universe hit theaters on May 2, 2008 and was titled Iron Man. At that time, we were introduced to some of the best in special effects, fighting scenes, and storytelling. Who was once just a character found in comic books and mostly just familiar to those who found a hobby between those pages became introduced to a wider audience via the big screen. After this initial release Marvel did a fantastic job of releasing story after story and introducing character after character allowing the full story of the Marvel universe to appear at least annually before our eyes. Very specifically, for 10 years we became familiar with the story of the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man, and so many more and for 10 years people flocked to theaters to experience these great stories. The game changed immensely on February 16, 2018 when director Ryan Coogler, producers Kevin Feige and David J. Grant, and an almost full cast of black people including Chadwick Boseman and Lupita Nyong-o got together to create what has become history. Aside from being the first African American directed movie with a predominately black cast, moviegoers went out in droves to capture the beauty of this Hollywood phenomenon, resulting in record breaking numbers. Black Panther opened with herds of people adorned in everything from traditional African garb to comic cosplay. Some theaters reported African drum ensembles setting up at theatre entries and some celebrities buying out full theaters so that everyone could witness the film. Opening weekend closed at over $200 million. In addition to this milestone a theatre in Saudi Arabia, which had been closed for 35 years, was opened just to allow for the airing of Black Panther. As of March 10th worldwide earnings had exceeded $1 billion; with proceeds from the movie being donated to the Boys & Girls’ Clubs for their STEM program. Today, Black Panther has been out for close to three months following its initial release and is currently sharing theatre space with Marvel’s most recent release, Infinity War. Despite the new release and the film’s current lifespan movie goers are still on their third, fourth, and fifth visit to Wakanda and theaters are still experiencing sold out crowds. Huge shout outs go to the cast and crew of this remarkable film for not only producing such quality work, but for creating history and changing the narrative in black film. WAKANDA FOREVER!

ICONIQUE MAGAZINE MAY 2018 YOUTH EDITION National Poetry Month National Poetry Month was established in 1996 by The Academy of American Poets. The purpose was to help put poetry on a platform and give it the respect it deserves. While poetry and spoken word have been around for centuries, they have yet to receive the acknowledgment that other components of the artistic world has garnered. It’s true that poets like Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, and the more colorful Dr. Seuss have gained notoriety, but poets and poetry as a whole have never been highly respected or given the correct acclaim. Although a large number of spoken word artists travel and share their gifts, none are really compensated in a manner that match their counterparts in the performing arts and aside form Maya Angelou, no other has never really gained a sense of celebrity. Now, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t working. Poets like Georgia Me (who appeared in Tyler Perry’s “Madea Goes To Jail”) and Lemon Andersen (who appeared in a number of movies including “The Pianist” and “Inside Man”) have been on their big screen grind. Speaking of Georgia Me, she in 2008 started The Tamika Fest; an annual, weeklong festival that takes place at the end of April in Atlanta, GA. The festival celebrates poetry, spoken word, and For All of your Photography Needs. Conthose workEnt. diligently at keeping the genre All tactwho Secure Photography. Serving relevant. While the festival sees a large number 50 States of attendees who flock from every part of the world the festival, in its 10 year tenure, has yet to be mentioned among other huge festivals like Coachella, SXSW, AfroPunk, and others. Like the Tamika Fest creator, Tamika Harper AKA Georgia Me, others have attempted to place poetry and spoken word in the limelight. Television shows like Def Poetry Jam and Verses & Flow saw temporary success with great alums like M’Reld Green from Chicago; Abyss, Tommy Bottoms, Theresa Songbird, and Queen Sheba all of Atlanta, DDE the Slammer of Indianapolis, and Black Ice of Philly just to name

ALWAYS DO WHATS BEST FOR YOU AND YOU ONLY. DO NOT LET ANYONE STIFFLE YOUR CREATIVITY . OFTEN WHEN YOU SHARE YOUR DREAMS & DESIRES WITH OTHERS, WHAT YOU GET FROM THEM IS USUALLY NOT IN YOUR FAVOR . YOU ARE MET WITH SO MUCH NEGATIVITY THAT YOU EVEN WONDER WHY YOU SHARED WITH THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE. YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT SOMETIMES PEOPLE THAT ARE CLOSEST TO YOU ARE USUALLY THE ONES THAT DO NOT SHARE IN YOUR VISION. MAINLY BECAUSE YOU HAVE REMINDED THEM OF WHAT THEY COULD NOT DO OR WHAT THEY HAVE NOT DONE IN THEIR LIVES. SO BE MINDFUL THAT THERE ARE THOSE WHO HAVE GREAT INTENTIONS BUT IN MOST CASES WILL DESTROY YOUR DESIRES IF YOU LET THEM. ALWAYS STAY POSITIVE AND PRODUCTIVE - VICTOR LIFE
