Ms. Kim McCall Author, Mother and Master Communicator, Kim McCall aka Travel was born the second eldest of four girls in St Paul, Minnesota. A witty and independent personality, Kim dreamed of being her own boss, while both working in and watching her father successfully manage the family business. Informed at 15 years of age that she was the surviving twin sister, of an unnamed brother, she began journaling to express the loss of the brother she longed to know. After reflecting on the joyous and turbulent moments in her life...through hundreds of pages of life experiences, Kim felt the need to rest her pen at 18. The birth of her daughter at age 20, ignited a fervor to write again. Kim hoped that one day her daughter would read her journals. Her two children now follow in her passion for writing and management; Kim’s daughter had a story published in the Minneapolis Spokesman at the age of 12 and today manages a store for one of the world’s largest gross 4

retail stores; Kim’s son is an entrepreneur. He expresses his joy in writing through rapping and producing music. Kim was married for 12 years and is now divorced. She now knows that she is a better person in spite of the outcome. Kim currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia. She feels so free when she’s writing so ladies (and gentlemen) let’s get this party started!

MAGAZINE IfICONIQUE you ever want to know how a single woman can take your husband, or boo, check out these stories. They’re filled with lessons you’ll want to avoid. My name is Regine Arnold AKA Nae Nae. My high school boo, Walter Green, liked making a little bit of money. However, I wanted big money, so I set my eyes on Dr. Rocky Lift. He captured my heart and then I met his brother! These stories will make you think women are basically devious, but you’ll find out that there are consequences. Who would think that by sleeping with a married man, you could end up in court? It happened to me. The judge ordered me to pay half the bills for Dr. Lift’s estranged wife’s doctor visits. The chapters between these pages may get a little twisted and crazy. Women, men, and couples in general will be able to relate to this collection of short stories. To all the men out there, if you give a woman an inch, she’ll rock your world.

Fashion accessories are rapidly increasing in popularity, particularly in our celebrity-obsessed culture. But many of us still do not know exactly how to use them to our best advantage. The term “fashion accessories is very broad and includes a number of products. Just like fashion clothing pieces, accessories come in virtually every size, shape and style under the sun. The most well known fashion accessory is of course, jewellery. For teenagers and children, fashion jewelry pieces that are popular often include colourful, oversized pieces, as well as charm necklaces or charm bracelets. For men, a popular piece of jewellery often includes large pendant necklaces, many of which display a cross or another popular or meaningful symbol. As for women, popular pieces of fashion jewelry include watches, earnings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, pins, and so forth. Another major fashion accessory that you might want to look at is a new handbag. While purses can also be trendy, it is the handbag that has become a real status symbol and major fashion accessory. They come in a huge array of different styles so it is common to own more than one if your budget allows. In fact, many women out there like to match their fashion accessories, including their purses and handbags, with the clothing that they wear. [Continue on Page 24] 9 Updating your handbag every season can be an easy and relatively inexpensive way to update your whole look.

Modeling #101 Acticle #8 Leadership Behavior & Fashion Quote’s for Model’s Leadership Behavior ( Model the Way) The leadership behavior modeling the way, is simply the leader doing what he or she expect’s the follower’s to do. If you expect people to speak respectfully to each other, speak respectfully to them. Leadership behaviors and organizational values should be spelled out and every leader be held accountable for modeling them. Leader’s serve’s as Role Model’s Leader’s also can serve as positive role model’s through focusing on other’s. Servant leadership, which is focused on the needs of colleagues, can provide a model for serving other’s internally as well as for meeting the need’s of customer’s & etc. Living by the rule’s of serving as a role model is essential to your self-worth. Lead by example. Here’s some Fashion Model’s Quote’s to Live by: “ Everyday is a Fashion Show and the World is your Runway.” “ Fashion is the Armor to Survive the Reality of Everyday Life.” ( Bill Cunningham) “ You can have anything you want in Life if you dress for it. ( Edith Head) “ I like my money right where I can see it ... Hanging in my closet. ( Carrie Bradshaw) “ Style is something each of us already has , all we need to do is find it. ( Diane von Furstenberg) “ Clothe’s mean nothing until someone lives in them. ( Marc Jacobs) So, start leading and being role model’s and repect the industry that you are currently seeking. I hope that the fashion quotes stimulated your mind about the fashion industry. Stay Beautiful, Angela Drisdel

BEHIND THE LOOK WITH ANDREA T.

TAKES A LOOK AT YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING FROM A HOLISTIC PERSPECTIVE . FOCUSING ON SUBJECTS LIKE EATING RIGHT, AND WHEN. WHEN TO EXCERSISE ALSO WHAT IS YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS AND HOW NOT THINKING RIGHT CAN LEAD TO BAD PHYSICAL HABITS.

THE BREAKFAST EXPERIMENT It’s all how you start your day! The report is due in two hours. Or perhaps you’re in the middle of a mid-term exam. Or you’re trying to finish your report for the morning. Suddenly, bam! Around 10:30 a.m. you hit a wall. All you want to do is look out the window. Hmmm…what did you eat for breakfast? I hate to say, “I told you so,” so I’ll turn to Mom, who has said it countless times: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s the meal that’s designed to supply a third of the macro and micro nutrients your body needs to run without a hitch. So what are you eating each morning to do all these things? A cup of coffee gulped down on the go? A cup of sugary yogurt and a muffin eaten at your desk? Nothing at all? Your body deserves so much better than that. And so do you! When you eat a good breakfast, your day goes smoothly. No growling stomachs, low blood sugar shakiness, or wandering attention to keep you from nailing those big goals you’ve made for yourself. What Breakfast is Right for You? One of the best—and most fun—ways to find out which foods serve YOU most powerfully is something called The Breakfast Experiment. For one week, eat a different breakfast each day. Record in a notebook what you ate, how you felt immediately after the meal, and how you felt again two hours later. • Day one: Scrambled eggs or tofu • Day two: Bean soup or a bean salad • Day three: Oatmeal • Day four: Boxed breakfast cereal • Day five: Muffin and coffee • Day six: Fresh fruit • Day seven: Fresh vegetables Feel free to repeat the experiment for another seven days with different foods each morning. Which breakfasts made you feel energized? Which ones didn’t? After the experiment, try adding in more of the foods that made you feel great! GET EVEN HEALTHIER! Would you like to learn how to choose the best breakfasts for you? (And the best lunches, dinners, and snacks?) Let’s talk! ICONIQUE MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018 EDITION

JANICE BRYANT Janiece Bryant, 40, is a freelance plus size model in Columbus, Ohio. I am a wife of 15 years to an incredible man and mother to three of the most amazingly beautiful young ladies. I have been modeling seriously for a little over 3 years. After working a corporate job for 20 years and being laid off I decided to pursue my dreams full throttle. My brand is all about making plus size women feel good about themselves and believing anything is possible at ANY age, even being a model. As a young woman there were so many things about my body that I wished I could’ve changed. Acceptance of myself and the way God created me became more essential to me when I had all daughters. I wanted my daughters to grow up being confident and aware of who they are no matter what society depicts as “beautiful”, and I knew that started with me. I was introduced to the plus model community when I was selected to model in October 2016 for Curve the Runway Ohio and since then I have been in countless runway shows including Crusade of Curves (Raleigh, NC). Runway has been my passion for the last couple of years but now I want to focus more on fit and print modeling. I receive lots of messages from young girls and women who admire my confidence and style so I have also began to mentor young girls and women who are looking to become plus models. I am nowhere near where I want to be as a plus model but I do want to share what I’ve learned thus far. I want to be the absolute best version of who God created me to be and that includes helping other women in any

capacity. I have also began the very beginning stages of J’Lenore Plus, an online plus size boutique. I also work part time as a style advisor and customer experience representative for a major plus size brand. The plus size industry and community has come so far but ironically we still have a long way to go and I’m here for it all! I want girls, women and men (yes, men too) everywhere, of all shapes and sizes to accept, embrace and love their bodies. One of my favorite quotes is “self-confidence is the best outfit, ROCK IT AND OWN IT!” 35

If your wardrobe is filled with classic pieces that flatter your body shape and suit your colouring, then simply choosing a new trendy handbag can instantly bring your look up to the minute. Travel bags are also considered a fashion accessory, but differ from handbags in that a lot of them are designed for both sexes. A travel bag is generally a small bag that can be used as carry-on luggage for a plane ride, a nappy/diaper bag or a laptop carrying case. It can also be the so called “man bag” that is increasing in popularity all the time. Many major fashion labels also have their own luggage line as well. Shoes are also a fashion accessory, although many do not necessarily consider them to be. Most often, women’s shoes are associated as fashion accessories, as opposed to men’s shoes. One of the reasons for this is the amazing array of women’s shoe style available, for example: athletic shoes, casual sandals, elegant sandals, flat dress shoes, stilettos, kitten heels, sling backs, mules, pumps and the list goes on. As with handbags and purses, most women own multiple pairs of shoes and aim to coordinate their shoes, especially for work, with the rest of their ensemble. Shoes can make or break an outfit, so think about the type of image you want to portray and make sure your shoes fit with that theme. Belts are also a major fashion accessory. While for many men and boys, belts are not necessarily a fashion accessory as much as a fashion necessity to hold their pants up; the same isn’t true for women. Women’s belts come in a number of different sizes, shapes, and styles and virtually every season there is a new “must-have” style. There is everything from casual, crocheted belts to wear with jeans, to elegant, black leather belts as a pair of slimline black trousers for work. Belts, handbags, purses, travel bags, jewellery and shoes are just a few of the many fashion accessories that you can use to make a good outfit into a great one. 38

SNAP SHOTS OF GREATNESS BY RHOMEL GLOVER

I’m always behind the camera at family functions; now it’s time to share my creations with the world. Through the years, I’ve learned that sharing a story through pictures and video is my passion, my creative outlet and what I believe is my calling. Photography and videography allow me to express what I’m thinking and feeling in ways that words could never do. When I look back at the relationships that I’ve been able to build over the years through taking pictures, I can’t help but be humbled. I am based out of St. Louis, MO, but my cameras and passion have no limits in the never-ending quest to capture greatness in life as I see it and to tell the “next” story of greatness. I often asked what inspires me or what keeps me going. It’s simple, I am inspired by greatness which is all around us. My hopes is to capture that greatness in photos and video. ICONIQUE MAGAZINE Mental Health & Modeling Mental health and modeling seem to cross paths for a large portion of this underground Instagram/GWC (girl or guy with camera) industry. Body image issues, anorexia/bulimia, abusive significant others, bi-polar disorder and more control the psyche of those sharing their soul for the world in front of a camera. Hoping each image feeds their internal need for acceptance, approval, adulation and admiration. How many likes did I get, how many comments praising their external beauty while internal struggles tear at their mind? Exhilaration from popularity in the ever expanding social media market, will this image get me published in a magazine, will it make me famous, will I be a Kardashian or will I be the next Top Model. The hopeful models mind riding a crescendo of excitement, then cascading into darker despair and depression when the shudder stops clicking. How long will it be before I get this next image of my amazing self? Why isn’t the photographer editing my images tonight? Was I not good enough, did I do something wrong and ultimately, am I ugly. The instant gratification of pictures to feed a mind adrift in illusion. A vicious cycle of mental anguish, feeds eating disorders, manipulates manic moments, drive’s the ire of jealous friends, family and loved ones. Each click chipping away at the models grip on reality. They become prey to unscrupulous managers and wannabes that promise them the world to take off their clothes, sell their souls on websites, traveling the world chasing, for the larger majority, an unrealized dream. The model in the image on the adjacent page wishes to be anonymous and deals with such struggles. Her mind splitting into multiple personalities as she fights with the self-confidence and self-awareness of where her self-worth is best fed. A very talented and accomplished artist in her own right, studying art since the age of 3, based upon her remarkable ability and aptitude. She’s ventured into the world of modeling to try to alleviate the mental illness she fights when creating art, losing herself and mind when traversing the landscape of fine art creations, the manic moments of making art and the depressive lull after her energy and mind is spent of each project. Sleepless nights, fury and passion plastered onto canvas, then the crash of weariness that consumes days of dark rooms, soft beds and unremorseful sleep. She hopes that modeling will detach her in a way from the art, but still struggles with the body and confidence issues associated with this genre of work. Afraid that if she reveals too much of her soul during the shoot, people will see the true person and not understand her complexity, compassion, gifts and absolute self. Her mind splitting into multiple personas, trying to manage the artistic pressure and duty of creation. Grasping for direction in the winds of the mind, following a feather floating in space, hoping to capture a moment in time that will give peace to her tortured mental reality. Modeling and mental health don’t always work well together, hopefully in this models case, it becomes a port in the storm for a beautiful, passionate, persistent and talented young woman. - ROBERT OWEN 46

ICONIQUE MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2018 EDITION National Poetry Month National Poetry Month was established in 1996 by The Academy of American Poets. The purpose was to help put poetry on a platform and give it the respect it deserves. While poetry and spoken word have been around for centuries, they have yet to receive the acknowledgment that other components of the artistic world has garnered. It’s true that poets like Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, and the more colorful Dr. Seuss have gained notoriety, but poets and poetry as a whole have never been highly respected or given the correct acclaim. Although a large number of spoken word artists travel and share their gifts, none are really compensated in a manner that match their counterparts in the performing arts and aside form Maya Angelou, no other has never really gained a sense of celebrity. Now, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t working. Poets like Georgia Me (who appeared in Tyler Perry’s “Madea Goes To Jail”) and Lemon Andersen (who appeared in a number of movies including “The Pianist” and “Inside Man”) have been on their big screen grind. Speaking of Georgia Me, she in 2008 started The Tamika Fest; an annual, weeklong festival that takes place at the end of April in Atlanta, GA. The festival celebrates poetry, spoken word, and For All of your Photography Needs. Conthose workEnt. diligently at keeping the genre All tactwho Secure Photography. Serving relevant. While the festival sees a large number 50 States of attendees who flock from every part of the world the festival, in its 10 year tenure, has yet to be mentioned among other huge festivals like Coachella, SXSW, AfroPunk, and others. Like the Tamika Fest creator, Tamika Harper AKA Georgia Me, others have attempted to place poetry and spoken word in the limelight. Television shows like Def Poetry Jam and Verses & Flow saw temporary success with great alums like M’Reld Green from Chicago; Abyss, Tommy Bottoms, Theresa Songbird, and Queen Sheba all of Atlanta, DDE the Slammer of Indianapolis, and Black Ice of Philly just to name

YOU ARE MET WITH SO MUCH NEGATIVITY THAT YOU EVEN WONDER WHY YOU SHARED WITH THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE. YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT SOMETIMES PEOPLE THAT ARE CLOSEST TO YOU ARE USUALLY THE ONES THAT DO NOT SHARE IN YOUR VISION. MAINLY BECAUSE YOU HAVE REMINDED THEM OF WHAT THEY COULD NOT DO OR WHAT THEY HAVE NOT DONE IN THEIR LIVES.
