Introducing The Iconique Magazine Sylvia Robinson Theatrical Production Edition
SYLVIA ROBINSON,
A FASHION INDUSTRY LEGEND, A CREATIVE EXTRAORDINAIRE…A THEATRICAL DESIGN ICON. I was born and raised in Albany upstate New York and knew at the young age of 4 that I wanted to be a Fashion Designer. I watched my Mother and Aunt create and sew Garments daily. It was fascinating to sit and watch them take Newspaper and make patterns prior to making the clothing. Creating patterns with Newspaper, is a technique that I find myself utilizing today with some of my designs. Once I started designing and sewing on my own, I found that my visions and designs were different, not the normal trend. I was a Trendsetter, I took designs and turned them inside out and came up with a completely different look, a completely different design. I was a visionary by the time I turned 16 and received a lot of my inspiration from Movies. One Movie in particular was Mahogany, starring Diana Ross and in the Movie, Diana wore a Mink Cape that had resembled one that my Mother owned. To my Mother’s surprise, that Movie inspired me to go into her Closet, cut up the Mink resulting in a Newly designed pair of jeans with the pieces of Mink serving as patches down the legs. I was so proud of the design and my Mother admired the Sylvia Robinson, Designer jeans…well until she realized the Mink was from her de-constructed Mink Cape. My Mother blew a gasket and went through the roof. That design, although beautifully done, landed me in some serious trouble. I really didn’t think twice about it because I had never seen my Mother wear the Mink Cape and furthermore, my SR Jeans were fly. My siblings and I laugh about it to this day.

I attended After School programs in my Community and would participate in Sewing Classes that Nuns would sponsor for those interested in learning how to sew. I enrolled in Home Economic Classes and participated in the 4H Club as well in order to perfect the craft of sewing. Every opportunity that was available, I took it. I became interested more and more in Fashion and once, of age, my Sister Jackie and I would coordinate and produce various Fashion Shows with different themes throughout our Community. The Fashion Shows were not vibrant enough for me and I along with Jackie, came up with the idea to design our own garments and put on a Fashion Production. Jackie, purchased two Sewing Machines and a ton of Fabric, she proceeded to create and make “ready to wear” and I created “out of the box” designs and garments that would really go along with our crazy Show Themes. Our first Production with our designs was a success but, the behind
the scenes operation was a stressful mess that we found today to have been funny and somewhat adventurous. Jackie and I were behind the scenes, taping, pinning, stapling, knot tying, and gluing the Models in the Clothing prior to them hitting the Runway. The entire Show was exhilarating and impactful. I was proud and I enjoyed the experience. To this day, I can remember my inspiration coming from the very first Ebony Fashion Fair Show I attended and it was that Show that confirmed my vision and dreams to put on Theatrical type Shows. That Show encouraged me to create some of the most outrageous, yet beautifully constructed garments and match with music and just like that a Theatrical Fashion Production was born.

I’ve never had an interest in Designing Clothes to sale and many often asked: “Sylvia, how do you make Money from your Designs, if you don’t sale them?” I would simply respond, I make money from the Productions, the Theatrical Shows. Theatrical Shows was my Passion and it enabled me to take the curves of a woman and create garments that enhanced, their curves all while making a creative statement. This Creative Statement and Design freedom birthed the Incredibly entertaining Fashion Express Production. It is a Production filled with bright colors, Masks, Theatrical garments and beautiful Models of various shapes and sizes and on occasion, various ages 5 and older. My main goal is to create garments that make a Statement and garments that have a purpose for a Theatrical Show. My personal opinion of my “over the top” Productions, is not just for Entertainment purposes but, it helps Models, MUA, Stylist and Photographers, build their Portfolios. The images push the Industry norm envelope and I must say, the images have resulted in Models, MUA, Stylists and Photographer’s Careers catapulting to greater heights and overwhelming success. I really enjoy creating Theatrical Garments and have found myself hyperventilating on several occasions as I sat at the Sewing Machine creating a “ready to wear” Outfit…they are boring and unappealing to me. I do however, enjoy teaching young kids and adults how to sew and the basic design concept as well as Garment construction of “ready to wear.” It is spiritually empowering to know that I have planted a seed within someone and was a part of their dream coming to fruition. I’ve also mentored hundreds of young ladies that wanted to become a part of the Fashion and Modeling industry. I was very honest and transparent with them on the good, the bad, the ugly. I also taught them the importance of Modeling and Shooting with a purpose. That, to this day is still valuable information for Models and Photographers. I have over 30 years’ experience in the Fashion Industry and I pride myself on empowering and supporting someone starting out. I strongly believe that Success is a very humbling experience and it is not possible without a strong team and helpful individuals that believe in your
Vision and Dream. I ‘am grateful for the people that God has placed in my life along my journey and they each had a purpose to either make me s tronger from adversity or they were truly a Blessing to my growth and s uccess. Most of the Garments that I create have a very special meaning to me. I especially like naming my Designs after particular events or experiences that I’m going through at the time. Whether dark or happy, I do my best work when I’m inspired. My Steve O’ Collection was a result of the death of my late husband that passed away two days after one of the biggest and most Historical shows of my Career. I was the first African American to rent the Roof Top of the New York State Museum. The love, dedication and financial sacrifices my Husband made to ensure my dream came true was and will always be unforgettable. The Show was a success and had over 800 people in attendance. The theatrics, the Garments, the theme, the Music…all extraordinary.

Losing my Husband was devastating and I blamed myself for the longest causing me to slip into a depression. It was my Faith and a great amount of praying that helped me heal from the loss and once again, I found myself sewing‌it was my only way out of that dark place. Recovering from such a devastating event in my life, enabled me to take my creativity to another level. I began creating garments for females of all heights and sizes. My goal was to make available opportunities for females that did not believe that Walking a Runway or being a part of a Fashion Production was possible. They lacked the confidence and competence needed to be successful and not to mention, the Industry standards that caused many to abandon their Fashion or Modeling dreams. I believe anyone willing to work at their dream, is worth helping and if they gave a 120% they would be successful. Why 120% you ask, that number was preached to my siblings and I by my Mother; she always told us to give 120% at everything we attempted or set out to accomplish.

TAKES A LOOK AT YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING FROM A HOLISTIC PER-
CREATING HEALTHY HABITS You want it? Then make it happen! Two friends are chatting about their diets. The first one says, “I want to be healthy and feel great.” The second one says, “I intend to be healthy and feel great.” Which one do you think is going to get healthy and feel great? Yep—the one who intends it. Wanting is simply wishing you can have or do a particular thing it. Intending means you’re committed to achieving something by making a plan for success—and sticking to it! The Fuel for Desired Results The key to intention is action – try this to build your intention muscle: • Get clear on what you want. Create a vision board by gathering images and words that pertain to your goal, and gluing them onto a large piece of construction paper. Hang the collage in a spot where you’ll see it often. (Or, you can use an online service like Pinterest to create a digital vision board.) • Do something to make your desire happen. Let’s say you want to eat four servings of vegetables a day. Your first action may be to go to a farmers’ market and purchase a few veggies you can cook for dinner. • Celebrate your achievement! Don’t forget to congratulate yourself for meeting your goal. How to Have a Great Day… Every Day! Did you know that you can even set an intention to have a great day? Rather than diving into your morning and hoping you’ll achieve your day’s big goal, why not take a moment and set yourself up for success? Try this “Setting An Intention to Succeed” exercise used by professional athletes, speakers, politicians, and performers: • Upon waking, lie in bed and think about what you have planned for your day (or, find a quiet spot to sit and contemplate). • Think about your desired outcome. Take a deep breath and visualize yourself succeeding. • Replay your success several times in your mind. • Next, add other senses, including sounds, smells, and touch. For instance, as you replay your success, you now also hear the director offering you the gig, or you feel the physical sensation of your finger hitting the “send” button on your latest assignment. • Lastly, replay the scene again, adding emotions. Feel your elation at getting the part, or your pride at finally finishing your work. You can perform An Intention to Succeed, throughout the day as desired. GET EVEN HEALTHIER! Do you intend to lose weight, eat healthy, and feel fantastic? Make a plan to succeed by getting the support you need! As a Health Coach, I specialize in helping people make their own healthy changes. Ready to get started? The looks that you will see throughout this Magazine, all have Visual concepts of a Theatrical Production. Many of the Designs have been featured in several of my Fashion Express Tours. It has been a Blessing and an Honor to be a part of New York Fashion, Baltimore Fashion and the Atlanta Fashion week shows. I created a Runway Production for each of these Fashion Events that left the guest Speechless and wanting more. From extraordinary Masks, intricate jewelry to feather trimmed garments, the looks and themes catered to several of the senses and it was some of the most colorful and musically entertaining productions. I must say, my hard work paid off and my unique design concepts and creative flair showed.

…But Money Can’t Buy Happiness Fame… Fortune… Celebrity… Wealth… All normal responses given by the average person when asked what they dream about. Only a very small percentage of people are given the opportunity to experience lives where money isn’t a concern, being known is a normal happenstance, and owning a plethora of expensive items is expected. However, the question becomes; does this lifestyle in fact equate to happiness? Does it allow for the rich and famous to escape the problems faced by the average Joe? Unfortunately, for some (maybe even most) such rewards just create even bigger problems. Stars like R. Kelly, all of the Kardashians, Kanye West, Chris Brown and many others have recently found themselves on the down side of what their celebrity has afforded them. Many would argue that, for those who have faced legal problems, their money has allowed for them to escape the consequences of their actions and that for the others they are too rich to really even care about what everyone else thinks when it comes to what goes on in their personal lives. What a lot of people don’t consider, however, is that every public situation comes with private dealings. Celebrities are people and if nothing else, everyone has to cope with the affects had on their mental health. R. Kelly, in particular, recently released a 19 minute cry for help. It could very well be argued that based on the accusations made against him in the past 20 years that he is reaping everything he sowed, but just given the content of the song, titled “I Admit”, the man needs help. It would be irresponsible to blame his actions on the fact that he, himself was abused as a child, but a psychologist would probably argue that as a contributor. But, we, the masses don’t care about that. All we know is that for a vast majority of us, R. Kelly is a monster. Another artist, Chris Brown, who gained negative public media when at the young age of 19 found himself in the middle of a public domestic dispute. The masses began to attack him as well for his actions. This happens time and time again and after a while time goes by, we forget, but they are forced to be reminded of what some would call mistakes and others would label evil actions. Going a bit more mildly, a lot of entertainers live lives where they are forced to pretend for the public. They walk around unhappy, dealing with losses that we are unaware, pain that we can’t see, and situations that we don’t know about. Unlike us, they don’t have the liberty of dealing with issues within just their inner circle, and sometimes the results become tragic. According to a Wikipedia listing, just in 2018 at least 10 public figures fell victim to suicide. While this is the most drastic action that may be taken, as a society, we should probably become more aware of the kind of pressure we place upon these people. We, especially Americans, tend to place celebrities on pedestals and give them high expectations. This isn’t to say excuse their actions, because just as with average American citizens, the law should very much be practiced, but to acknowledge the fact that celebrity does not equate to happiness and that those in the spotlight are people just like us. Our hats off to the former member of Destiny’s Child, Michelle Williams, in seeking professional help and our hopes that others who find life to be overwhelming, do the same.

I love creating Theatrical looks and I enjoy sewing but, I think the most gratifying, is Mentoring and empowering people interested in the Fashion Industry. Whether it is Modeling or Designing, I get such a satisfaction from sharing my 30 plus years of industry expertise and giving Make-up Artist, Stylist and Photographers a platform to build their Brands as well. My Mother and Grandmother always stressed to us that whatever Gift God gave you, you better use it or lose it. No matter my age, I will continue to utilize every gift that God has given me and I will awake every day in spite of my challenges, with a determined attitude to create, empower and operate in love.

Mental health and modeling seem to cross paths for a large portion of this underground Instagram/GWC (girl or guy with camera) industry. Body image issues, anorexia/bulimia, abusive significant others, bi-polar disorder and more control the psyche of those sharing their soul for the world in front of a camera. Hoping each image feeds their internal need for acceptance, approval, adulation and admiration. How many likes did I get, how many comments praising their external beauty while internal struggles tear at their mind? Exhilaration from popularity in the ever expanding social media market, will this image get me published in a magazine, will it make me famous, will I be a Kardashian or will I be the next Top Model. The hopeful models mind riding a crescendo of excitement, then cascading into darker despair and depression when the shudder stops clicking. How long will it be before I get this next image of my amazing self? Why isn’t the photographer editing my images tonight? Was I not good enough, did I do something wrong and ultimately, am I ugly. The instant gratification of pictures to feed a mind adrift in illusion. A vicious cycle of mental anguish, feeds eating disorders, manipulates manic moments, drive’s the ire of jealous friends, family and loved ones. Each click chipping away at the models grip on reality. They become prey to unscrupulous managers and wannabes that promise them the world to take off their clothes, sell their souls on websites, traveling the world chasing, for the larger majority, an unrealized dream. The model in the image on the adjacent page, Elle Cata, deals with such struggles. Her mind splitting into multiple personalities as she fights with the self-confidence and self-awareness of where her self-worth is best fed. A very talented
and accomplished artist in her own right, studying art since the age of 3 based upon her remarkable ability and aptitude. She’s ventured into the world of modeling to try to alleviate the mental illness she fights when creating art, losing herself and mind when traversing the landscape of fine art creations, the manic moments of making art and the depressive lull after her energy and mind is spent on each project. Sleepless nights, fury and passion plastered onto canvas, then the crash of weariness that consumes days of dark rooms, soft beds and unremorseful sleep. She hopes that modeling will detach her in a way from the art, but still struggles with the body and confidence issues associated with this genre of work. Afraid that if she reveals too much of her soul during a shoot, people will see the true person and not understand her complexity, compassion, gifts and absolute self. Her mind splitting into multiple personas trying to manage the pressure and duty of artistic pressure and creation. Grasping for direction in the winds of the mind, following a feather floating in space, hoping to capture a moment in time that will give peace to her tortured mental reality. Modeling and mental health don’t always work well together, hopefully in Elle’s case, it becomes a port in the storm for a beautiful, passionate, persistent and talented young woman.
