In 1979, discussions began with the following prominent social workers: Carl Bartolucci, Richard Calica, Arthur Diers, James Forkeotes, Connie Goldberg, Ellen Kenemore, Tom Kenemore, Janet Kohrman, Helen Lane, Arnold “Arnie” Levin, Paul Reizen, Joseph Palombo, Louise Saltzman, Arthur Schwartz, and Bruce Smith. The group met to begin developing a plan for an independent higher educational institution to offer advanced clinical Intraining.1981, just two years after the initial discussions began, on November 3, 1981, ICSW drafted its articles of incorporation and submitted its application on November 28,1981, for incorporation to the Illinois Board of Higher Education for operating authority. In 1983, twelve faculty members welcomed its first class of six students into the PhD program. On March 19, 2012, the Institutional Actions Council of the Higher Learning Commission approved the MA program in clinical counseling and psychotherapy.
The Institute for Clinical Social Work (ICSW) was started by a small group of visionary social workers from leading Chicago-area institutions. The founders were aware that most doctoral programs in social work focused on policy, administration, and research, with little preparation for clinical work. ICSW’s founders understood why: these programs resided within universities, where they were pulled in multiple directions by the needs of the larger institution, its competing departments, and its dependence on grant-winning research.

a letter FroM our preSIDent Dear Friends of ICSW-Resilience.ICSW:I’mexcited to present you with the 2021 Annual Report for the Institute for Clinical Social Work (ICSW). Current events continue to provide lessons about living during crises and that an important aspect of organizational survival is developing a culture of resilience. Resiliency is often used in describing an individual’s ability to overcome adversity. However, resiliency is also an appropriate term to use when describing the organizational culture at ICSW during the July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021, fiscal period. During this past fiscal year, faculty, instructors, and staff have worked together to maintain a resilient campus culture by developing and engaging in practices that helped us work through periods of adversity. According to George S. Everly, Jr. in the article, “Building a Resilient Organizational Culture,” here are a few ways that organizations demonstrate resilience: MICHELLE CURTAIN STEWART, EdD 6
While higher education has not been immune to the societal challenges this past year, we have maintained cultural resiliency.
First, our commitment to supporting our students has been unwavering. We continued to provide students with access to mentors and consultants, as well as increasing counseling and academic services, and individual scholarships. This year, we were proud to welcome a geographically diverse cohort of students from eleven different states including: California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Secondly, we continued to innovate our practices by streamlining operations and increasing operational efficiencies by moving to online financial services. Finally, we continued to support faculty, instructors, and staff by prioritizing professional development training on campus, virtually, and providing access to an archive of professional development resources through an online learning commons.
A continuation of the aforementioned institutional investments will help ICSW continue to thrive and adapt in times of crises. Recent alumni data show that most graduates pass their licensure exam on the first attempt, are working in the field either in private practice or at a non-profit agency and are extremely satisfied with their academic experiences at ICSW. To ensure a continuation of programmatic rigor and student success, we will maintain campuswide investments through the next fiscal year.
1. Resilient organizations invest in their client base; 2. Resilient organizations are innovative in times of adversity; and 3. Resilient organizations invest in their leaders.
