LETTER FROM DIRECTOR / CARTA DEL DIRECTOR DEAR FRIENDS OF THE INSTITUTO CERVANTES IN SYDNEY

It is a pleasure to present you the first seasonal cultural program of our centre which precisely will turn one year this autumn since its inauguration. In just a short time we have been able to start up, with the effort of many people, a project that is looking to establish a connection between the Australian culture and the Hispanic world through film series, conferences/lectures, exhibitions and concerts. Since we occupied an historical building dated 1914 located in the university precinct of Sydney, we have organised for the next months two architecture exhibitions; one of the Chilean architect, Mathias Klotz, and another one, with the projects shown in the Spanish Pavilion at the 11th Venice International Architecture Exhibition in 2008. The cinema also will be the protagonist these months. The Instituto Cervantes will support the Spanish Film Festival in 2010 as it has done so in the past two editions. In addition we will start up the session of Wednesdays “In Double Screen” from April with the title “Things of the Heart". Also we will speak of Literature since in these months coincide with the World Book Day (April 23), Children’s Book Day (May 26) and Galician Literature Day (May 17). For the occasion we will yield the space to feminine Literature in and the children and young people. On the other hand, we will participate in the celebration of the Harmony Day with a series of activities on May 1 in our centre. And finally for the first time in Sydney, along with the other 72 Cervantes Institutes worldwide, we will celebrate on June 19, the E Day (the Day of the Spanish language). All of you are invited to enjoy these activities with us.

Me es grato presentaros el primer programa cultural impreso de nuestro centro que, precisamente, este otoño cumplirá un año desde su inauguración. En poco tiempo hemos podido poner en marcha, con el esfuerzo de muchas personas, un proyecto que busca establecer puentes entre la cultura australiana y el mundo hispánico a través de ciclos de cine, conferencias, exposiciones y conciertos de música. Dado que ocupamos un edificio histórico de 1914 situado en el centro universitario de Sídney, hemos organizado para los próximos meses dos exposiciones de arquitectura, una del arquitecto chileno, Mathias Klotz, y otra, con los proyectos que se llevaron al Pabellón de España en la XI Exposición Internacional de Arquitectura de Venecia en el 2008. El cine también será el protagonista estos meses. El Instituto Cervantes, como lo ha hecho en las dos pasadas ediciones, apoyará al Spanish Film Festival 2010. Además pondremos en marcha la sesión de los miércoles “En pantalla doble” que arrancará ya en abril con el título “Cosas del corazón. También hablaremos de literatura ya que en estos meses se celebran el Día Internacional del Libro (23 de abril), el Día Internacional del Libro Infantil y Juvenil (26 de mayo) y el Día de Las Letras Gallegas (17 de mayo). Para la ocasión cederemos el espacio a la literatura en femenino y a los niños y jóvenes. Por otro lado, participaremos de la fiesta del Harmony Day con una serie de actividades el día 1 de mayo en nuestro centro. Y finalmente por primera vez en Sídney, junto con los otros 72 Institutos Cervantes de todo el mundo, celebraremos el 19 de junio la fiesta del Día E (el Día del español).

Ganador del prestigioso premio italiano Borromini de Arquitectura en 2001, Matías Klotz es uno de los arquitectos chilenos más conocidos fuera de su país. Es responsable de la creación de una gran gama de proyectos significativos que incluyen símbolos culturales tales como la “Casa Klotz” en Tongoy, Chile, “Casa Reutter” en Cachagua, Chile, “Colegio Altamira” en Santiago, Chile y las “Casas Ponce” en Buenos Aires, Argentina. En el 2001 se convirtió en decano de la facultad de arquitectura de la Universidad de Diego Portales en Santiago de Chile.

Winner of the prestigious Italian Borromini prize of Architecture in 2001, Mathias Klotz is one of the best known Chilean architects outside his native country. Mr Klotz is responsible for the creation of a large range of significant projects which include cultural landmarks such as Casa Klotz in Tongoy Chile, Casa Reutter in Cachagua Chile, Colegio Altamira in Santiago Chile and Casa Ponce in Buenos Aires Argentina. In 2001 he became the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture of the Diego Portales University in Santiago de Chile.

Concert of guitar and violin, in which the Spanish influence in Latin American music will be reviewed through the Colombian rhythm and dance, the bolero and new trova. The WIN WSO’s Principal Conductor, Colombian born and now Australian, Carlos Alvarado’s musical and artistic life has been intense and exciting. Studying music at the Tchaikovsky Conservatorium in Moscow where he graduated with a PhD in Opera and Symphonic Conducting under one of the leading Russian conductors of the twentieth century, Maestro Gennaddy Rozhdestvensky, he honed his conducting studies in various master classes and seminars of conducting under Professor Hellmuth Rilling, the founder of the International Bach Academy in Stuttgart, Germany.

Concierto de guitarra y violín, en el que se repasará la influencia española en la música latinoamericana a través del ritmo y la danza colombiana, el bolero y la nueva trova. El director principal de la Orquesta Participants / Sinfónica de Wollongong, colombiano de nacimiento y ahora australiano, Carlos Participantes Alvarado, ha tenido una vida musical y Carlos Alvarado Principal Conductor / artística bastante intensa y excitante. Estudió música en el Conservatorio Conductor Principal Tchaikovsky de Moscú, donde obtuvo Wollongong Symphony un doctorado en Conducción de Opera Orchestra y Sinfónica bajo la dirección de uno de los conductores rusos más importantes Alexandra Loukianova del siglo veinte, el maestro Gennaddy Rozhdestvensky. Perfeccionó sus Concert Master / estudios en diversas clases magistrales y Primer violin Manly Warringah Choir seminarios de conducción bajo la dirección del Profesor Hellmuth Rilling, fundador and Orchestra de la Academia Internacional Bach en Stuttgart, Alemania.

“ARE WE THAT WE ARE”, es una exploración física en la existencia de los estados alterados de la conciencia dentro de la experiencia humana. Personificando estados arcanos de estupefacción, este trabajo investiga el misticismo y la espiritualidad, éxtasis y estados de trance, sicodelia y sexualidad, para exponer reinos del conocimiento debajo de la superficie de la realidad diaria. Iluminando el potencial del cuerpo para trascender al ser consciente, nos hace cuestionar qué existe más allá del sentido racional ordinario.

6 Respiros, el nuevo trabajo de Rafael Bonachela, está realzado por la música del compositor italiano Ezio Bosso. Además, por primera vez en Australia, el artista, nacido en Sídney, Adam Linder creará y actuará in “ARE WE THAT WE ARE”. Este joven artista, establecido actualmente en Berlín, ostenta en Europa de una notable carrera en la danza.

ARE WE THAT WE ARE is a physical exploration into the existence of altered states of consciousness within human experience. We have the honour to have Rafael Bonachela as a guest in the Instituto Cervantes talking about his career and his latest creations. He is currently the artistic director of the Sydney Dance Company. His stellar career both as a dancer and choreographer began in Barcelona. He travelled to England, joining London’s legendary Rambert Dance Company in 1992 where he remained as a lead dancer and Associate Choreographer until 2005. It was Rafael’s commitment to concentrate on the creation of his own dance works that saw him move away from Rambert to form Bonachela Dance Company in 2006. His dynamic and exciting work has resulted in commissions from companies around the world.

Tenemos el placer de tener a Rafael Bonachela en el Instituto Cervantes para hablarnos de su carrera profesional y sus últimas creaciones. Rafael Bonachela es actualmente el director artístico de la Sydney Dance Company. Empezó Participant / su brillante carrera como coreógrafo y Participants bailarín en Barcelona. Luego se trasladó a Londres convirtiéndose pronto en el primer Rafael Bonachela, bailarín y Coreógrafo Adjunto de la famosa artistic director / director artistico de la Rambert Dance Company hasta 2005. La Sydney Dance Company necesidad de concentrarse en sus propias creaciones le llevó a separarse de Rambert y crear su propia compañía, la Bonachela Dance Company en 2006. Su creatividad y originalidad ha atraído a compañías del mundo entero.

Together with English, Spanish is the other global language today and very much likely to remain so for most of the present century. However, Spanish has a peculiar status in Australia today. Although the presence of Spanish speakers and trade relations with the Spanish-speaking countries is well documented in this country since the 18th century (some would even say since the early 17th century). There has been some substantial immigration from the Spanish-speaking countries during the 20th century, but there are today (relatively) few schools where this language is an option for primary and secondary students. This shows a remarkable contrast with the exponential growth of university students’ demand of Spanish in the recent past, a trend that seems to be in progress.

Sin embargo, el español tiene un estatus peculiar en Australia en la actualidad. Aunque la presencia de hablantes del español y las relaciones comerciales con los países de habla española se encuentra bien documentada en este país desde el siglo XVIII (hay quien diría que incluso desde comienzos del siglo XVII). También ha habido una inmigración importante desde los países hispanohablantes durante el siglo XX, aunque hoy en día hay (relativamente) pocas escuelas en las que se ofrezca la opción de aprender esta lengua a los alumnos de primaria y secundaria. Lo que contrasta con el crecimiento exponencial de la demanda de español que demuestran los alumnos universitarios desde hace unos años, una tendencia que parece seguir en aumento.

Para ello contaremos con Juana Salabert la presencia de la escritora Juana Salabert writer / escritora (París, 1962). En sus novelas aparece en tela de fondo a menudo la guerra civil o la segunda guerra mundial; sus libros han tenido muy buena acogida. Ha publicado entre otros: Varadero (1996), Velódromo de invierno (2001, Premio Biblioteca Breve), La noche ciega (2004), El bulevar del miedo (2007). Juana Salabert creció y estudió en Francia donde sus padres vivían el exilio, pero siempre ha escrito en español.

«Women Create» is a Spanish governmental initiative to promote the creativity done by women. The Instituto Cervantes in Sydney, having in mind the World Book Day wishes to celebrate this protect from a feminine perspective, in particular literature, as a means to understand our daily lives. We have invited Juana Salabert (Paris, 1962). Often the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War are the settings of her books, which have received many prizes. She has published Varadero (1996), Velódromo de invierno (2001, Biblioteca Breve Prize), La noche ciega (2004), El bulevar del miedo (2007). Juana Salabert was born and studied in France, where her parents lived in exile, but has always written in Spanish.

It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia (Spain) where on 23 April, Saint George's Day, a rose is traditionally given as a gift for each book sold.

El 23 de abril de 1616 fallecían Cervantes, Shakespeare y el Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. También en un 23 de abril nacieron – o murieron – otros escritores eminentes como Maurice Druon, K. Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla o Manuel Mejía Vallejo. Por este motivo, esta fecha tan simbólica para la literatura universal fue la escogida por la Conferencia General de la UNESCO para rendir un homenaje mundial al libro y sus autores, y alentar a todos, en particular a los más jóvenes, a descubrir el placer de la lectura y respetar la irreemplazable contribución de los creadores al progreso social y cultural. La idea de esta celebración partió de Cataluña (España), donde este día, condiciendo con la festividad de Sant Jordi, es tradicional regalar una rosa al comprador de un libro.

Uruguayan musician Christian Piranha Isola will present a talk and demonstration about the origins of Candombe and its links with the African culture. Candombe “cuerda de tambores” drumline is formed by three distinctive drums: Piano, Repique and Chico. Chirstian will collaborate with well-known singer and composer Jorge do Prado. Jorge specialises in Candombe Criollo, Afro-Cuban and Afro- Uruguayan music. Member of renown Uruguayan trio “Pareceres”, during the early 1980’s. In 1896 he migrated to Australia where he developed a consistent musical career sharing the stage with Australian and international musical figures. El músico uruguayo, Christian Piranha Isola, presentará una charla y hará una demostración sobre los orígenes de Candombe y su relación con la cultura africana.

The Galician Literature Day is a holiday in Galicia (Northwest of Spain) and was created in 1963 to commemorate the 100 years since the publication Cantares Gallegos, by Rosalia de Castro. Ever since one dead Galician writer has received the homage. In 2010 will be Uxio Novoneyra, one of the best poets in Galician. The Instituto Cervantes in Sydney will celebrate this day with a conference on Galician culture and its language, by Professor José Colmeiro, Principe de Asturias Chair at the University of Auckland.

El Instituto Cervantes celebra, por segundo año consecutivo, su propia jornada internacional de la literatura infantil y juvenil dentro del ciclo anual “Lobos y Dragones”. El Instituto Cervantes, demuestra así su apoyo a la literatura dirigida a los más pequeños que se hace en España y en Hispanoamérica, donde contamos con grandes escritores e ilustradores reconocidos en todo el mundo. Para conmemorar este día, se realizarán actividades de literatura infantil en 18 centros de la red Cervantes en los cinco continentes: Brasilia, Burdeos, Casablanca, Cracovia, Nueva Delhi, Palermo, Porto Alegre, Rabat, Roma, Salvador de Bahía, Sídney, Tetuán, Toulouse, Túnez o Utrecht entre otros. En Sídney contaremos con la presencia del narrador Pablo Albo. Pablo es un domador de palabras. Ha participado en casi todos los festivales de narración oral y ha contado cuentos en casi todas las provincias de España. Tiene publicados varios cuentos para adultos y niños. Ha ganado varios premios: Primer Premio del III Certamen Internacional de Álbum Infantil Ilustrado Ciudad de Alicante, con la obra Mar de Sábanas, con Estela, la travesía de una estrella del cielo que llega al mar, alcanza la distinción "The White Ravens". En el 2008 resultó ganador del Premio Lazarillo con la obra Diógenes y del Premio Villa d'Ibi con Marabajo.

The Instituto Cervantes celebrates for the second consecutive year its own Children's Book Day within the annual series “Wolves and Dragons”. The Instituto Cervantes demonstrates thus its support to literature addressed to the youngest at home that is done in Spain and Latin America where we had great writers and illustrators recognised worldwide. In order to commemorate this day, 18 centres of the Cervantes network will prepare children literature activities in the five continents: Brasilia, Bordeaux, Casablanca, Krakow, New Delhi, Palermo, Porto Alegre, Rabat, Rome, Salvador de Bahia, Sydney, Tetuan, Toulouse, Tunisia or Utrecht among others. In Sydney we will have the presence of the narrator Pablo Albo. Pablo is a words trainer. He has participated in almost all the festivals of oral narration and has told stories in almost all the provinces of Spain. He has published several stories for adults and children and has gained several prizes: First Prize in the III International Contest of Children Album Illustration in Alicante, with the work Mar de Sábanas, and with Estela, the journey of a star that arrives at the sea, reaches the distinction "The White Ravens". In 2008 he received the Lazarillo Prize with Diogenes and the Villa d' Ibi Prize with Marabajo.

Arquitectura sin papel es una extraordinaria selección en formato audiovisual del proyecto presentado en la XI Exposición Internacional de Arquitectura de Venecia, comisariado por los arquitectos Soledad del Pino y Ángel Fernández Alba. En esta exposición se pretende dar a conocer la innovación y la calidad de las propuestas del panorama español actual a través de 15 jóvenes estudios de arquitectura representativos de una “realidad arquitectónica virtural” completamente consolidada y globalizada. Sus proyectos ponen en relieve una arquitectura fresca y de vanguardia puesta al servicio de las sensibilidades y necesidades de la sociedad.

ABOUT INSTITUTO CERVANTES SYDNEY The Instituto Cervantes is a public not-for-profit institution founded by the Government of Spain in 1991 to promote Spanish language teaching and knowledge of the cultures of Spanish speaking countries throughout the world. It is now the largest international Spanish teaching organization, and has more than 70 centres, in over 40 countries, in the five continents. The central headquarters of the Instituto Cervantes are in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, and in Madrid. The Instituto Cervantes in Sydney was established in June 2009. El Instituto Cervantes es una entidad sin ánimo de lucro creada por el gobierno de España en 1991. Su misión es promover la enseñanza del español y de las lenguas cooficiales de España, así como contribuir a la difusión de la cultura de los países de habla española.
