LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR / CARTA DEL DIRECTOR Dear friends of the Instituto Cervantes in Sydney I am very happy to share with you the spring cultural program of our centre which, as you will soon gather, blossoms with many interesting events that will be of your liking. You have the last chance to see Surprises of the Cosmos before we host Thinking about Europe. This new exhibition consists of over 100 drawings, paintings and collages made by students aged 5-12 who took part in a competition to celebrate the European Language Day in Sydney. Cinema will be very present during the next three months. In our Double Screen program we have prepared a new series, Between Two Worlds. In November the 5th Hola Mexico Film Festival comes to Sydney and we are very proud to show 5 excellent films to commemorate the 100 anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. Days later you will have the chance to see the Made in Catalonia Film Festival with new exciting productions. As part of our celebration of the Bicentennial of the Independence of the American republics professor Vázquez will talk about Spain in the early 19 century. We will also commemorate with Pedro Meyer the 100 anniversary of the birth of one of the best poets in Spain, Miguel Hernández, who tragically died in 1942. There is music too, with a piano concert by David Gómez on the Spanish National Day and tango with Tangovia. Finally to end this Holy Year we will host the presentation of the book A Food Lover’s Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela written by Dee Nolan and with photographs by Earl Carter. I take the opportunity to wish you all the best for 2011.

Queridos Amigos del Instituto Cervantes de SÍdney Me satisface presentaros el programa de primavera de nuestro centro que, como veréis, está lleno de muchas actividades que serán de vuestro interés. Quedan pocos días para la clausura de Sorpresas del Cosmos antes de inaugurar Pensar Europa, una exposición de 100 trabajos hechos por estudiantes de 5-12 años para el concurso que se organizó para el Día Europeo de las Lenguas de Sídney. El cine estará muy presente estos próximos tres meses. Hemos preparado dentro del programa "En pantalla doble" un nuevo ciclo: Entre dos mundos. En noviembre la 5° edición del Festival Hola México llega a Sídney y estamos muy orgullosos de mostrar en el Instituto Cervantes de Sídney cinco excelentes películas para conmemorar el centenario de la Revolución mexicana. Días más tarde tendréis la oportunidad de disfrutar del Made in Catalonia Film Festival con nuevas producciones. Como parte de las celebraciones de los bicentenarios de las Independencias, el profesor Sigfrido Vázquez nos hablará de la España a principios del siglo XIX. También conmemoraremos con Pedro Meyer el centenario del nacimiento de uno de los mejores poetas españoles, Miguel Hernández, que murió trágicamente en 1942. La música también tendrá su espacio, con un concierto de piano a cargo de David Gómez en el Día Nacional de España, y con una actuación de tango con Tangovia. Finalmente para cerrar este Año Santo acogeremos la presentación del libro Un amante de la cocina por el Camino de Santiago, de la periodista Dee Nolan y el fotógrafo Earl Carter. Quisiera aprovechar estas líneas para desearos un feliz 2011.

Islands and the Instituto Cervantes. La exposición SORPRESAS DEL COSMOS es fruto de la colaboración entre el Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias y el Instituto Cervantes. Su objetivo es dar a conocer en el extranjero la labor de investigación astrofísica que se lleva a cabo en España, un país que cuenta con importantes observatorios en su territorio, coincidiendo con la celebración en 2009 del Año Internacional de la Astronomía.

A new film series kicks off this October and will last until mid December. It is all about being in one world and not knowing which one is yours. Do you think your world is the only one that exists? Life follows parallel lines of two different worlds, sometimes they cross, sometimes they don’t. Some of the characters of this new film screening are aware of it, others not. David Gómez (Wattwil, Switzerland, 1974) offered his first recital at the age of 14 and ever since then has performed as a soloist and as part of a chamber music ensemble throughout Europe, America, Asia and Time / Horario Oceania. The events that occurred in 1810 on both sides of the Atlantic triggered the political movements that led a big part of Hispanic America to independence. The invasion of Andalucía by the Napoleonic army and the Spanish government taking shelter in Cádiz seemed to announce the submission of Spain to France. The Hispanic America didn't want to fall in the hands of the French so different groups all across the continent sprang demanding more autonomy or independence.

La invasión de Andalucía por las tropas de Napoleón y el refugio del gobierno español en la ciudad de Cádiz a principios de 1810 pareció anunciar el final la independencia España y su sumisión a Francia. La crisis económica, política y militar que acuciaba a España desde finales del siglo XVIII, motivada por largo proceso revolucionario francés, acabó por tener unas repercusiones directas sobre sus posesiones americanas. El trasvase de la deuda acumulada a los virreinatos hispanoamericanos, la inestabilidad política española y los ejemplos revolucionarios de los Estados Unidos de América y Francia, entre otros muchos factores, crearon el sustrato sobre el que se cimento el inicio del proceso independentista. Cuando en 1808 se desencadenó la crisis de la monarquía española por el derrocamiento del rey Carlos IV por su propio hijo Fernando y la posterior invasión francesa ordenada por Napoleón, América reaccionó con lealtad unánime a España y a su nuevo rey Fernando VII. Sin embargo, el errático derrotero que siguió la política en la península Ibérica, debida fundamentalmente a la superioridad militar napoleónica, acabó por alentar a aquellos que eran partidarios de una mayor autonomía americana con los movimientos juntistas de 1810.

The economic, political and military crisis affecting Spain since the late Eighteenth Century, which was motivated by a long French revolutionary process, had a direct impact on its American possessions. The transfer of the accumulated debt to the Latin American viceroyalties, the Spanish political instability and the revolutionary examples of the United States and France, among other factors, laid the foundations for the beginning of the independence process. When the crisis of the Spanish monarchy occurred due to the overthrow of King Charles IV by his own son Fernando and the subsequent French invasion ordered by Napoleon, America reacted with unanimous loyalty to Spain and his new king Fernando VII. However, the erratic course followed by the policy in the Iberian Peninsula, mainly due to the Napoleonic military superiority, eventually encouraged those who supported a greater American autonomy with the juntista movements in 1810.

Institut, the Alliance Française, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, the British Council and the Instituto Cervantes in Sydney jointly organized a competition amongst primary school students, aged 5-12, to think about Europe. They were asked to produce an image that represented a characteristic of ‘Europe’ with a maximum size of A3. The image was presented as a drawing, a painting, a photo or a collage. You will be able to enjoy the work of 100 kids and the winners of the contest and try to think of Europe yourself.

TangoVia Buenos Aires is a nonprofit organization that, since 2002, has brought together artists, researchers and cultural institutions to contribute to the preservation and promotion of tango as an art form in Buenos Aires and the world. Meet TangoVia creator musician Ignacio Varchausky, who will be talking about this important project and who will be performing together with Maggie Furgueson (violin/bandoneon), for the delight of the audience. Members of the public are encouraged to show off their skills on the dance floor! The talk and performance will be preceded by the screening of the documentary Si sos brujo (by Caroline Neal, 2005) which features Ignacio Varchausky as well as old and new generations of tango musicians. This is a collaborative project supported among others by SURCLA (Sydney University Research Community for Latin America), the Spanish and Latin American Studies Department at the University of Sydney and the Consulate of Argentina. Accompanying Santiago Sierra’s 22nd Kaldor Public Art Project in Brisbane, the celebrated Spanish artist will host a special discussion at the Instituto Cervantes in Sydney. In May 2010, at a public symposium for the Instituto Cervantes in Berlin, Sierra segregated the audience according to their income, separating and screening the event from the view of low-income earners as a statement about financial disadvantage and access. In Sydney, Sierra will host a panel discussion with Indigenous artists as an exchange of ideas about artmaking.

The Casal celebrates its 3rd annual 'Made in Catalonia' Film Festival (MiCFF) by presenting it this year in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra! The Festival's aim is to promote the extraordinary lively film culture of Catalonia. The films and documentaries will be shown in the original languages (Catalan and Spanish) with English subtitles. Este año, el artista español Satiago Sierra creará un evento de 9 días en la Galería de Arte Moderno de Brisbane como parte del 22 Kaldor Public Art Project. Santiago Sierra es famoso por su trabajo provocativo llamando nuestra atención sobre las desigualdades del sistema económico y social. Para este proyecto, 7 estructuras de 600x60x60cm, construidas para sostenerse de forma horizontal en un muro, formarán una serie de esculturas monolíticas sobre los hombros de unos jornaleros durante el tiempo de la exposición.

DELE EXAM WHAT IS DELE?

DELE Diploma in Spanish as a Foreign Language, certified by Spain’s Ministry of Education. The exam was launched in 1988 to test the Spanish language abilities of non-native speakers and is currently administered in more than 100 countries across the world.

WHY TO TAKE DELE?

• The only official diploma in Spanish internationally recognized. • Recognized by corporations, chambers of commerce, private and public educational institutions. • Facilitates the process of obtaining a student visa to Spain and gaining preferential treatment when entering schools. • It does not expire or has to be renewed. It can be used in perpetuity.
