Countdown to Examinations GCSE French


Examination Dates - GCSE French O Listening and Reading –

Tuesday 14th May (a.m.) O Speaking– Week commencing Monday 8th April. Exact date and time to be confirmed. O Writing – Friday 17th May (a.m.)


Revision Sessions O Revision sessions for French are available after

school as below: GCSE Higher - with Mr. Shingler on Mondays in S10 GCSE Foundation – with Mrs. Anderton on Wednesdays in S7 Speaking Test practice/revision sessions are also running every Tuesday in S8 between 3.15 and 4.15, run by two of our Year 13 French A level students. Mr. Shingler is also running one-to-one clinics with individual students on an appointment basis.


Exam Content – GCSE French O Listening - Unit 1

The examination lasts about 35 minutes at Foundation Level and 45 minutes at Higher Level. It allows candidates to show that they are able to understand spoken French in a variety of situations. Each item will be heard twice. Use will be made of non-verbal responses, such as box ticking, multiple choice and matching and verbal responses in English and/or in French.


Exam Content – GCSE French O Listening - Unit 1

The listening test may assess, among other things, the comprehension of public announcements, instructions and requests, interviews, news items, short dialogues and monologues such as weather forecasts.


Exam Content – GCSE French O Speaking - Unit 2

The examination lasts about 7-9 minutes (plus 12 minutes preparation time) at Foundation Level and 10-12 minutes (plus 12 minutes preparation time) at Higher Level. It allows candidates to show that they are able to respond to a variety of stimuli and situations using spoken French. Candidates will be given a Role-play, a Photo card and will be asked General Conversation questions on two different themes, one of which they get to choose. The other theme is chosen randomly.


Exam Content – GCSE French O Reading – Unit 3 O The examination, lasting 45 minutes at

Foundation Tier and 60 minutes at Higher Tier, allows candidates to show that they are able to understand and respond to written French in different registers and contexts and from different sources. Use will be made of non-verbal responses such as boxticking, multiple choice and matching and verbal responses in English and/or in French.


Exam Content – GCSE French O Reading – Unit 3

The reading test may assess, among other things, the comprehension of written public notices and signs, magazines or newspaper articles and personal information such as that found in letters, notes, e-mails or messages.


Exam Content – GCSE French O Writing – Unit 4

The examination, lasting 60 minutes at Foundation Tier and 75 minutes at Higher Tier, allows candidates to show that they are able to write structured pieces of French in different registers and contexts. The writing test may assess, among other things, the ability to compose accurate written French in response to a variety of stimuli – photograph, translation of sentences, a specific piece of writing designed to reply to clearly defined bulletpoints .
