introduction Research was taken over 12 weeks to compile this booklet from previous assignments. The first assignment focused on Post War International Style (194570), it consisted of a poster including a timeline and information about six furniture designers and a communications designer Massimo Vignelli. This task gave us an understanding of the period, the historic influences on design, politics, economics and a greater knowledge of renown designers within that period. The second assignment was an academic essay if chosen designer: Arne Jacobsen. This essay consisted of research within the functionalist movement and where Jacobsen fit within that. The essay related Jacobsen’s architecture and furniture design to this movement and how architecture and furniture design were related in his career. The final assignment was to develop a booklet explaining the life and career of Arne Jacobsen, this helped gain more of an understanding of his work to then develop my own piece of furniture influenced by Jacobsen’s design.

Designer biography Arne Jacobsen was born 11th February 1902 in Copenhagen Denmark, Jacobsen wanted to follow his mother’s path and become a painter, but his father Johan Jacobsen pushed Jacobsen to study architecture as it was a stable job, he then went on and studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Arne Jacobsen graduated with a silver medal and started to develop his career as an architect. His first building that made his mark within architectures was the Bellavista housing in 1934. Jacobsen then was sent to Sweden from Nazi pressure, within this time he developed skills in textile and wallpaper, as well as designing two doctors summer homes. Whilst designing the SASS Royal Hotel Jacobsen flourished within in furniture design, designing the egg, swan, drop and pot chair for the Hotel in 1958, this made him an exceptional architect as he focused on the whole and not just the building. Jacobsen died 24th March 1971, he died with many unfinished works such as Rathaus Mainz.

Cracked was designed by the influ-ence of The Egg. I wanted to use a taller lounge to simulate the cosines The Egg does. I have also chosen to use the same Bottom frame to flow with Jacobsen’s designs. I have use d leather and wood as per traditional Danish upholstery for this design.
ReflFLEctions This course has taught me a lot about past designers that have impacted design world. Assignment one was interesting as we had to come together as a group and complete a task, poster and timeline about in linked designers from a certain period. This helped me understand furniture design and how the events around that time influence design. Assignment two was focused on a specific designer: Arne Jacobsen. though my research I learnt that Arne Jacobsen was a one of a kind designer. He created the whole rather than a building. He built a larger picture. Arne Jacobsen is an inspirational designer that has sparked an intrest in my personal design. Creating this booklet has shown me more about the design process but it has taught me extreme amounts of Arne Jacobsen and the functionalist movement.
