Border Days 2015 grand marshals: Vern and Kitty Agee
Agees have long-standing appointment with Masonic breakfast BY LORIE PALMER IDAHO COUNTY FREE PRESS ARRIS RIDGE – Eight miles out of Kooskia, a couple raised their five children on top of the world. At least that’s what the Agee view on top of Harris Ridge looks like. Vern and Kitty Agee have been chosen to serve as Border Days grand marshals for 2015. Vern was born and raised on Kidder Ridge and Kitty on Harris Ridge. A canyon separates the two ridges, but when they grew up, “it might as well have been a state,” laughed Kitty. Kitty attended the Harris Ridge School and Vern the Kidder Ridge School. “Every little area had its own school back then,” they said. The families raised cattle and farmed the land. They had large gardens, milk cows and made their own butter and baked their own bread. Vern and Kitty met in high school, married afterwards and started their lives together, carrying on their family trades as farmers and ranchers. Was it difficult to move over and live on the ridge where Kitty grew up? Not for Vern. “No! There weren’t rocks to pick here on Harris like there were on Kidder,” he laughed. Vern not only worked the land but also worked as a logger, a carpenter and as the Kooskia postmaster for eight years. She worked as a clerk at Gilroy’s grocery store downtown for 25 years. Together they raised Mike, Chris, Tricia, Bruce and Jack, all of whom graduated from Clearwater Valley High School.
H
hey all learned to work hard. They went on to school and have good jobs,” Vern said. “I’m real pleased with them.” The Agees have spent most of their Border Days years in the basement of the Masonic Lodge in Grangeville. Vern has been with the Masons (both Kooskia and Grangeville lodges) for 60 years. “We see a lot of people at the breakfast every year – we bring in about 1,200 during the three days,” he said.

Kitty and Vernon Agee pose on the deck of their Harris Ridge home. They will serve as grand marshals for the 2015 Border Days celebration.
They have done every job at the breakfast from flipping pancakes and ordering food to serving and cleaning tables. Now, they take tickets at the door. Now, thanks to the donation of the Orrin and Eleanora Webb estate, the hall has been remodeled and painted throughout. There are new bathrooms and the basement has been redone. “We sure invite anyone who hasn’t seen it to come in for breakfast and look around at the new space,” Vern said. The breakfast is each
day of Border Days, July 3, 4 and 5, each morning from 7 to 11 a.m. The couple has been married for 64 years and when asked what helps make their marriage last, Kitty smiled and said one word: “Patience.” The two currently have nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. They are involved in the activities of the Kooskia Presbyterian Church, go dancing and taking care of their property. “I have about three acres to mow here, and
I take care of the Harris Ridge Cemetery with the help of my neighbor, Jim Pankey,” Vern said. The two say their life on Harris Ridge with their family and “very good neighbors” throughout the years has been rewarding. They have a panoramic view from all sides of their home and enjoy feeding the hummingbirds and have watched many animals throughput the years including elk, deer, turkey, pheasants, coyotes, rattlesnakes and even the occasional bear and cougar.
Parades on tap all three days The parade’s the thing and each day of Border Days offers a Main Street parade. Parades are set for Friday, July 3, 2 p.m., Saturday, July 4, 11 a.m., and Sunday, July 5, 11 a.m. Kiddie’s Parade participants will meet on the courthouse lawn Saturday, July 4, 10 a.m. Area businesses, organizations and individuals are invited to enter floats, cars, horses or simply walk in the parade. Sign up by calling Tanner Maynard, 451-4747.

Museum display to feature American Indian collection, household items BY LORIE PALMER IDAHO COUNTY FREE PRESS

Carmelita Spencer’s American Indian collection is on display at the museum.

GRANGEVILLE – What do beads and flat irons, old-time kitchen gadgets and papooses have in common? They will all be part of the Bicentennial Historical Museum’s annual Border Days display. Community residents and guests alike are invited to the museum July 3, 4 and 5, from 1 to 5 p.m. “We have a nice, air-conditioned place to rest, visit and see an amazing collection of items,” said museum director Pam Northcutt. This year’s display will feature Carmelita Spencer’s American Indian collection upstairs while the antique household items display will be downstairs. Spencer was instrumental in founding the museum and left many items to it, including a large display of Indian artifacts, beading and clothing. The household display will feature a wide variety of items including antique irons, hem crimper, washboard, plunger, spice containers, dishes, salt and pepper shakers, toasters and other gadgets. Included are original ice cream cartons from the former Grangeville Creamery and glass bottles from the old Owl Drug Store. “We have had many local donations throughout the years and now have enough of our own items without having to borrow from anyone,” Northcutt said. The household items was a brainchild of museum volunteer Joan Hagenbuch. “I just thought people might like to see this old stuff, like this butter
GRANGEVILLE — Guest artist for the three days will be Jackie Zumalt of Grangeville whose art will be on display in the museum basement. Zumalt received her bachelor of arts degree and teaching credential in art at California State University at Sacramento, Calif. She is a signature member of Northwest Watercolor Society (NWS) and Idaho Watercolor Society (IWS) and locally belongs to the Central Idaho Art Association (CIAA) and the Salmon River Art Guild (SRAG). Zumalt considers herself a mixed water media artist using color, its luminosity and glow, to propel her observations of the world into compositions that portray that experience. She participates in local, regional, and national art shows and her work may be found in private collections in the west.

churner, that people used to use,” she said, showing an item next to a variety of handmade wooden butter molds. In addition to the regular museum displays, Kamiah flintknapper Bruce Cibar will set up shop in the museum’s basement area all three days. “He is always very popular, especially with kids who come through,” Northcutt said. Cibar makes arrowheads and
other sharp stones by chipping away, or “flintknapping” material. Pete Northcutt, Johnny Henderson and George Conover will offer music on July 4 in the basement from 1 to 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served during the museum’s hours and bathroom facilities are also available. The museum is located at 305 N. College Street, Grangeville. Call 9832573.

Border Days Queen Nicole Poxleitner
Great experience has made her ‘stronger and more confident woman’ BY LORIE PALMER IDAHO COUNTY FREE PRESS EUTERVILLE – “I’ve grown up going to Grangeville Border Days Rodeo and I remember loving every second of the rodeo and parade,” said Border Days Queen 2015 Nicole Poxleitner. “I always loved watching all the beautiful ladies and their horses and knew one day I wanted to be there promoting the rodeo I loved.” That dream came true for Poxleitner when she was chosen as queen last year and has spent the time since then representing Border Days at a variety of parades, luncheons and rodeos. Poxleitner is the daughter of Glenn and Loretta Poxleitner of Keuterville and has a sister, Ellea, 14, and a brother, Morgan, 10. Her maternal grandmother is Rose Mangini of Grangeville. Poxleitner will be a junior this fall at Prairie Junior Senior High School in Cottonwood where she is active in Prairie League, student council, Future Farmers of America and track. She is also a member of Keuterville Livestock 4-H Club and is sponsored
K
by Idaho Forest Group. “This experience has meant the world to me,” she said. “I have learned so much about myself, taking responsibility, working toward agreement when I have different views and stepping out of my comfort zone to talk to people. There is always a different challenge to conquer!” She is involved in her church youth group and has volunteered at Syringa Thrift Shop and various other endeavors. Poxleitner said she would encourage other young ladies to try out for royalty. “It’s a fabulous rodeo to promote, and it’s such a great experience that has made me a stronger and more confident woman,” she said. When she graduates from high school, Poxleitner would like to attend college and work toward her veterinary degree at the University of Idaho and Washington State University. Her favorite song is She’s Country and she likes the group Florida Georgia Line. The events she enjoys the most at the rodeo are barrel racing and bull riding.

REACH FOR THE BEST
Toy scramble GRANGEVILLE – Here’s a real Toy Story: Gather the kids for a deep drive into a sea of toys. Each year, Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center provides thousands of toys (as well as candy and money) for the Toy Scramble. This annual event for kids 6 and younger will take place Friday, July 3, following street sports. Participants will see Main Street by Heritage Square become a virtual sea of toys as GHR employees and family members throw out toys and other fun items for kids to pick up. Often tickets for the Grangeville Volunteer Fire Department’s popular fish pond can also be found. GHS gives out paper bags for the kiddies’ loot, but you can also bring your own bag. Be sure to have the camera handy, too, as little ones scramble for the goodies. There is no cost – it’s just good, fast fun. Fast? Yes. Get there on time or you’ll miss out on the merchandise! Street sports starts at 9 a.m. (Top) kids and parents scramble for toys in 2014 as (left) Marilyn Deardorff hands out paper sacks for loot. FREE PRESS / LORIE PALMER

JULY 8, 1965 issue of the Idaho County Free Press reported the 53rd annual Border Days Rodeo “plenty tough” according to cowboys, but even so some managed to rack up high point rides and fast times. Among the winners reported included Artie Biegler, Eureka, Mont., and Abe Wilson, Craigmont, who each scored 138 points to split the saddle bronc money. Also in this issue, Mary Jane Holandsworth stepped up to start her reign as the 1966 Border Days Queen.

Bull riding: Art of the start, the finish and everything in-between It’s the eight-second ride that puts spectators on the edge of their seats. The bull rider’s equipment is only a flat, braided rope that is pulled around the animal’s girth. With this rope, the cowboy ties himself to the back of the animal by putting his hand through a loop, making a fist and with several wraps of the rope, pulling it tight. Then the chute gate opens. The bull rider turns out his toes and attempts to stay on the back of the leaping, kicking bull through his grip on the rope and the strength of his legs. Spurring isn’t required in bull riding, although extra points will be given if a rider is able to add that stylish lick. Half of the score is given to the rider’s ability to maintain control; the other half reflects the athletic prowess of the bull. Yet even if the cowboy makes a qualified ride, the excitement isn’t over. He must still dismount the bull and get to safety. If he jumps off, he must try to stay on his feet because most bulls will charge a fallen man. Often the tightly-drawn bull rope holds his hand in place and he is hung up.
Now for some lingo... Seein’ daylight — when the rider comes loose from a bucking animal far enough for spectators to see “daylight” between the rider and the animal. Prize money — paid to the top four or six winners of each event. Added money — the purse put up by the rodeo committee which is added to the contestant’s entry fees to make up the total prize. No-time — failure to qualify in a timed event; signaled by flag man waving flag sideto-side Re-ride — the option given a rough stock competitor when the stock doesn’t perform as expected.
