5 Tips for Successful Aging A

mericaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s population is rapidly changing. We are in the midst of a giant generational shift. Members of the Greatest Generation (those who experienced the Great Depression and fought in World War II) and the Silent Generation (those who were children during that time) are rapidly aging. At the present pace, over 8,000 baby boomers are turning 65 every day! Aging baby boomers are transforming our society by re-defining what it means to age. This is affecting society at every level including health care, retirement planning, housing, community, and family life. Demands and expectations of what it means to age successfully are different compared to past generations, presenting an interesting dichotomy of desiring to live longer, stay active, and age in place. The ability to live safely, independently, and comfortably regardless of age is the greatest desire for seniors. We are all capable of successfully aging if we are intentional about the process. The outcome will wildly vary. Successful aging has a different meaning for each of us, but commonalities exist in most scenarios. To live safely, independently, and comfortably, consider your physical, mental, and emotional health as well as your community and any financial implications. Mobility is vital to independence. Independent mobility is different for everyone. It may be through ambulation or use of an assistive device such as a cane, walker or wheelchair. You need to maintain the ability to be independently mobile regardless of utilizing a mobility or assistive device. Aspects of maintaining mobility may include adequate balance, strength, and endurance. Maintain sharp mental health. Regardless of age, it is important to remain engaged and mentally sharp through constant and varied mental stimulation. Proper nutrition and exercise have an impact on your mental health and help to prevent depression, Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disease, and dementia. Share the love. Research clearly notes that those who are more loving and caring tend to live longer and healthier. Be generous with the knowledge and wisdom that you have acquired throughout the years. 2

Be active in your community. Active engagement in your community is a critical part of successful aging. People find community in a variety of ways including family, friends, church, civic organizations or volunteer projects. Plan for a long life span. It is likely that life spans will continue to increase if epidemics, such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome, are properly addressed. Be proactive in how you plan to manage your finances. When planning, assume that you will live well into your 90s. The fear for many will be running out of money during their elder years. The only way to avoid this issue is to be proactive and thoughtful in your planning. Seek competent financial advice. Be realistic about the math as you project into the future. How we plan for this giant generational change will affect everyone at some level. As a society and as an individual, we must prepare for the changes in expectations and demographics. Baby boomers are likely to be the most physically fit and active seniors in history.Â Over the next ten to twenty years, the paradigm of successful aging will be re-written. The old stereotype of the elderly, the aged, and seniors will be lost in the dust of a new healthier, long lived population. 10 RECOMMENDATIONS TO CREATE A SAFE, ACCESSIBLE HOME THAT WILL GROW OLD WITH YOU.  Doors should be at least 32-36 inches wide, with

a lever-style handle for easy grasping (incorporating locks where necessary for child safety), and open outward if at all possible. Interior doors can also have their hinges replaced with offset hinges that will allow for an extra two inches of width clearance. A Home with Universal Design Features Lets You Age in Place. A pocket door is even better, simple to operate and granting quick access for those with wheelchairs or walkers. Pocket doors require plenty of useable adjacent wall space for installation, but can also be mounted on the wall surface if needed like the old style barn doors.

 When it comes to the floor, choose a non-slip

hard surface and make sure there’s enough space for comfortable navigation by wheelchair.

 Equip all stairways inside and out with secure

handrails running along both sides of the steps. Also make sure that stair treads are roomy enough to

prevent trips, and edges are marked for easy visibility (use a different color of tile, stain the edge of a wood step with a contrasting tone for a helpful and decorative detail, run a metal edge along a carpeted step, or accentuate with colorful tape).

 Fill your home with plenty of bright lighting, and

have a night light on duty at all times. Larger, rocker type light switches are handy for everyone, and even come in illuminated models.

 At first it may sound like a five-star hotel luxury, but having a phone in the bathroom can actually end up being a lifesaver. Select a wall-mounted, non-portable model with the largest touch-tone keys you can find, and install it at a height that’s easy to reach even if you’re lying on the floor. Pre-program the phone with important numbers.

hile you must be healthy and self sufficient in order to live in a Senior Independent living facility, many household tasks might be part of the community's service offerings, including laundry, linen service, group meals, local transportation, and planned social and cultural activities. Some people dream of spending their retirement in a community of peers, where they can enjoy access to a wide variety of social, cultural and fitness activities. Others love the idea of moving to a smaller home or apartment that is easy care and surrounded by similar senior residences. The common denominator in both visions is self-sufficiency. Among the many senior housing options available, Independent Living provides the greatest versatility and freedom.
