CCF CONCERT HUNTER HAYES

CCF CONCERT JO DEE MESSINA

With the release of “Unmistakable: Love,” the first in a series of three EPs to be released in 2010, JO DEE MESSINA steps firmly into the front ranks of country singers with staying power. A collection that displays both her songwriting prowess and her abilities as a co-producer, Unmistakable is above all a showcase for one of the genre’s most remarkable and distinctive voices. “I knew she was a great singer,” says Chris Ferren, one of five co-producers who worked with Jo Dee on the project, “but I guess I didn’t know how great until I worked with her.” That is a sentiment echoed across the board from Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts, Jerry Flowers, Dann Huff, James Stroud, who each co-produced cuts on Unmistakable. Flowers goes so far as to deem her “the best vocalist I’ve ever worked with. No matter what you ask her to do, she can do it, and do it better than what you wanted. She sings from her heart and it’s just amazing every single time.” As always, Jo Dee’s passion and believability are front and center on Unmistakable, which catalogs her live experiences from a disappointing relationship through a painful but liberating break-up into real and fulfilling love. “You can pretty much feel it that there was a shift in my life during the process of recording these new songs,” says Jo Dee, who became engaged, got married and had a baby during the extended creative process. The EPs display all the range, versatility and exuberance that have long made Jo Dee a fan favorite and have brought her so much success both on record and on stage. What’s more, it is a project for which she had complete artistic freedom. “My team really wanted to hear what I had to say,” said Jo Dee of her songwriting side. “It made the creative process extremely enjoyable.” That irrepressible spirit of country music has been in Jo Dee’s DNA since her childhood in Holliston, Massachusetts. She was first attracted to country in the music of Alabama and Hank Jr. as well as Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire.

Among the many extraordinary things about Hunter Hayes, the multi-talented musician, writer, producer and performer, perhaps what is most astonishing is that in truth, he’s just getting started. And it is that fact which holds the promise of Hunter Hayes becoming one of the most significant musical talents to emerge, not just from Nashville, but from anywhere, in a long, long time. Already, he has accomplishments beyond most musicians wildest dreams: Singing “Jambalaya” with Hank Williams Jr. in front of 200,000 people (15 million YouTube views) at the age of four; appearing with Robert Duvall (who gave Hunter his first guitar) in “The Apostle” at the age of six; playing with Johnny and June Cash, and Charlie Daniels at a BBQ; performing for a US President and many more. You might say that he’s lived a charmed life. But those experiences are simply the natural result of Hunter’s natural talent, one that’s been there from the beginning as though a gift from God, and one that he’s always conscious to be in service to. Having moved to Nashville three years ago, Hunter was quickly signed to Universal Music Publishing Group where he has co-written songs for Rascal Flatts and Montgomery Gentry. At the same time, he was introduced to Atlantic Records’ Chairman/CEO and music visionary Craig Kallman, who he signed with at Atlantic Records. “I’m blessed to be surrounded by people who appreciate music and support what I do.” Now Hunter, in the producer’s chair with Dann Huff (Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, Trace Adkins) has released his self-titled Atlantic Records debut album. “I’ve released independent records before, but this feels like the first real record – with the high stakes,” he says excitedly. For Hunter, even with those high stakes, he was committed to doing it his way – “playing everything on the album, having fun and experimenting,” he stops, and then says with a smile, “I literally lived in the studio.”

CCF CONCERT JAMIE GRACE

CCF CONCERT NATE FOWLER

Have you ever watched a movie scene where the seasons change in a matter of seconds, progressing the story from the present to the future? There, in one sweeping scene, you can witness the passage of time and its impact on people’s lives. Put that cinematic montage onto a music recording, what you get is One Song at a Time by Jamie Grace. One Song at a Time picks up where her imaginative debut Hold Me e.p. left off, revealing the heart of a unique young woman in progress. Here, this self-taught musician who plays six instruments carves out some unforgettable new music—think Sara Bareilles, Macy Gray and Colbie Calliat—infusing a funky, laid-back vibe as unique as the young woman herself. “She writes, sings and plays her own music. And she has this style that can’t be put into a typical label box,” says TobyMac, who signed the Atlantabased Jamie Grace after tracking her clever YouTube videos for more than three years. “When some people sing and play, it’s almost effortless, and their joy is all over them. That’s what grabbed my attention with Jamie Grace. I’ve not been this excited to work with an artist in a long, long time.” “I’ve come a long way spiritually,” says Jamie Grace, who at age 19 is embarking on her senior year at college. “Not that I was lost or bewildered, but God has shown me so much. I’ve gotten rid of some of my insecurities, and I’m learning a lot more about my voice, my point of view and myself. I’m still exploring different genres, but within that I’m discovering that is who I am. And I’ve been inspired by people like tobyMac and Nicole C. Mullen to embrace all those differences. I guess you could say I’ve grown up a bit. “The other day, my brother-in-law said, ‘You know, you’re kind of like a woman now.’ And it struck me as funny, but also true. I’m still that goofy kid that I always was. But know I’m at a new place, stepping into the time God has for my life, really jumping in to what God has for me. And I definitely think I’m ready.”

“Let’s all pretend we’re the only ones in the room and feel okay with ourselves dancing around like we have a clue what we’re doing- it’s called making a memory.” I would like that to become my catch phrase. I understand it’s way to long to be a “catch phrase” so maybe it can just be my really, really long motto. I’m going to write my own biography- according to my freshman English teacher this would be referred to as “auto” biography. Here we go. “Hello, (standing) my name is Nate Fowler.” I was born in a small town in California. One-two- skip a few- I moved to Boise, ID with my parents at the tender age of 9 years. Soon after I took interest to my dad’s acoustic guitar- I strummed one chord for 3 weeks. Wrote my first song using that one chord. I’ve been doing similar ever since. Music has always been something that has intrigued me. I began as a drummer- when realizing that Phil Collins had already done the whole drummer-lead-singer thing I began spending more time strumming. I’m a really big fan of everything music represents. I love the writing, production, replication, booking, load-in, planning the show, promoting the show, connecting with people from stage, tearing down, meeting people, sharing laughs- occasional awkward tears- then lying in bed watching the fan spin trying to figure out how we can make that exact feeling happen again. Wow- that is basically the entire process of the “music business”, minus some other not so important details.

Idaho 4-H Celebrates 100 years 4-H in Idaho can be traced back to 1912 and has been going strong ever since! 100 years ago, 4-H in Idaho began with 30 potato clubs and 19 sewing clubs, a total of 570 youth. By 1914, potato, corn, poultry, pig, bread, sewing and canning clubs were organized with membership of 6,565 boys and girls. 1923 was the first “4-H Junior Short Course” at the University of Idaho campus in Idaho that continues today, known as Teen Conference. With support of the University of Idaho Extension, there was one 4-H agent in each district by 1936 and the first State 4-H Leader was hired in 1944. Today over 33,000 youth participate in 4-H in Idaho with the help of 3,100 adult volunteers! Many years ago youth enrolled in a 4-H project were most likely learning about livestock, farming, sewing or cooking projects. While these project areas still have strong participation, youth today are also enrolled in project areas such as aerospace, art, Know Your Government, photography, robotics, shooting sports and woodworking. Although the scope of

projects has increased, the core elements of 4-H Youth Development have remained the same. The 4-H motto is still “To Make the Best Better” and youth continue to “learn by doing” through their project work. The focus of 4-H is to help youth build life skills that they will continue to use as adults to make good decisions and be positive, contributing citizens. Canyon County will continue to celebrate 100 years of 4-H in Idaho during the Canyon County Fair. Look for the 4-H poster contest and essay contest entries in the 4-H department in O’Connor Fieldhouse during the Fair. We will also be honoring 4-H clubs who have given 100 hours or more of service to their community and Century 4-H families (families with a cumulative of 100 years of 4-H membership, 4-H volunteer or 4-H Extension service). To learn more about 4-H and how you can be involved, contact the Canyon County Extension Office at 459-6003 or visit our website at http://www.uidaho.edu/extension/canyon/4hyouthprograms.

CWI Joins Canyon County Fair Fun Every year Canyon County fairgoers can count on an impressive display of produce and other goods, animals, a carnival, and definitely fun fair entertainment! In addition, community sponsors add to the traditional offerings with once-a-year opportunities. College of Western Idaho (CWI) is excited to be part of this year’s activities as a fair partner and facilitator of fun, while helping present two very important days. On Friday, July 27, CWI will team up with the Treasure Valley Chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America in support of Military Day at the Canyon County Fair. CWI and the Blue Star Mothers will collaborate to collect personalized postcards for active-duty military men and women. The groups will also be accepting donations to help pay postage to send the care packages around the world. CWI representatives will be on-site to discuss veteran services, education, and career training opportunities with Military and veteran families. Look for the CWI shade canopy just inside the main gates. On Saturday, July 28, be sure to ven-

ture out further into the festivities and visit the Health & Wellness Expo. Start the day at the Barnyard Dash, which will turn the east side of the fair into a maze of obstacles and challenges that racers will attempt to navigate with speed and grace. Once the race is over, stop by the CWI Health Programs booth where faculty and students will be providing blood pressure checks, skin care ideas and demonstrations, and cholesterol and blood sugar screenings. CWI representatives are happy to share information about a variety of Health Programs, both degree and short term, available at CWI. So whether it’s the food, rides, exhibits, or fun with your community, this year’s Canyon County Fair experience is sure to be a memorable one. Plan on making time to support Military Day,visit the Health & Wellness Expo, and hang out with YOUR Community College at the fair.

Canyon County Fair

The Canyon County Fair looks to the future 2012 Marks the 125th Anniversary of the Canyon County Fair. The Fair is a tradition for many families as well as a social and cultural treasure that enriches the lives of Canyon County residents from every background and walk of life. The tradition of the County Fair dates back to the late 1800’s and began as a way to advance public knowledge of agriculture and provide a community gathering place. That tradition continues to this day, but with modern innovations that bring home the importance and reality of agriculture to an urban population that may have little contact with farms, ranches and agribusinesses. Caldwell hosted the first Canyon County Fair in1887 as a harvest celebration. It was held in the area of the Fairview Golf Course with an oval track extending to Fillmore Street. In 1901, the fair was incorporated and became the “Canyon County Fair”. In 1907 that site was sold and forty acres was purchased between Chicago Avenue and the Railroad tracks. In 1916 the fairgrounds partially burned causing financial difficulties and foreclosure upon which the remaining buildings were torn down. Canyon County was absent a fair until the 1930’s where organizers held the event at the Guard Armory and the Caldwell Park. The Fair finally moved to O’Connor Field House and the Charolais Barn which were already built on the original Fair site. In 1981 the Fair Board built what is now the Fair Building plus

100 horse stalls. With nearly 46,000 people attending the event annually the current site is bursting at the seams. It is exciting that the community, civic and youth groups are flourishing with steady growth. The Fair Board including Rosalie Cope, Fair Administrator have worked diligently to prepare for the future. In the Fall of 2009 the Fair Board purchased 81.15 acres East of Caldwell, off Hwy 20/26 as the future home of the Canyon County Fairgrounds. The Fair Board hired a group of consultants to formulate a “master plan” for the new site. The next major hurdle will be raising the funds necessary to complete the project. The Canyon County Friends of the Fair Foundation has been formed with the primary goal to generate funds necessary for execution of the plan. The Foundation runs on the premise that, “it’s your Fair”! The group is actively seeking community members to prepare for this exciting undertaking. If you are interested in making a difference, and doing something great for the community, inquire with the Fair Office about participating on the Foundation Board. Volunteering is a great way to make a difference, and help the community. 455-8500, or info@ canyoncountyfair.org The Master Plan along with the new branding will be unveiled in the near future at a “Barn Raising” fundraiser/kick-off event. Check the Fair website for more information www.canyoncountyfair.org.

We are the Idaho State Tobacco Prevention and Control Program and “we have a two-fold purpose at Project Filter. One is to promote a tobacco free lifestyle and two; provide the resources and tools to assist smokers who want to quit,” acknowledged Jack Miller, Program Manager for Project Filter. “If you go to our website, www.projectfilter.org, you will see that we offer free nicotine patches, gums or lozenges. You decide when. We’ll show you how.”

To encourage people to find out more about living a tobacco free lifestyle, Project Filter will have a booth set up Sunday by the front gate at the Canyon County Fair. As an added bonus to free premiums that Project Filter will be handing out, Project Filter sponsored racecar driver Tyler Bailey and motocross racer Matt Teichert, will be at the booth signing autographs and would like to answer any questions about the free resources they have to help you kick the habit for good.

CCF CONCERT SARA EVANS

CCF CONCERT UNCLE KRACKER

2011 has been a busy year for Top Dog/Atlantic recording artist Uncle Kracker, spending most of it on the road performing at stadiums and arenas in nearly every major U.S. market with country superstar and friend Kenny Chesney along with a number of headlining shows of his own. And yet, the Detroit-based singer-songwriter still found time to write and record much of his as-yetuntitled forthcoming album (expected out in 2012). The first taste of the new music is “My Hometown” – a track produced by Keith Stegall (Zac Brown Band, Alan Jackson, George Jones), who also sat behind the board for Uncle Kracker’s previous release, 2010’s “HAPPY HOUR – THE SOUTH RIVER ROAD SESSIONS.” “HAPPY HOUR – THE SOUTH RIVER ROAD SESSIONS” featured the hit singles “Smile” and “Good To Be Me.” After enjoying tremendous success on the pop radio charts, “Smile” crossed over to become the singer-songwriter’s first solo Top 5 hit at Country Radio and proved to be one of 2010’s biggest Country songs with single sales exceeding 2 million. In addition, the “Smile” companion video enjoyed top 5 success on Great American Country’s Top 20 Country Countdown and a top 20 rotation favorite at CMT. “Good To Be Me” - a track produced by and featuring guest vocals from longtime friend/songwriting partner Kid Rock - also became a staple on country radio playlists nationwide. The single’s companion video clip made its world premiere on Great American Country and was in heavy rotation on both GAC and CMT. Summer 2010 saw Uncle Kracker and Kid Rock steal the show with a joint performance of the song on the ABC special, CMA Music Fest: Country’s Night To Rock. The performance earned them an ACM award nomination for Vocal Event of the Year. Uncle Kracker closed that year with a performance of “Good To Be Me” at the inaugural American Country Awards.

Sometimes the best way for an artist to move forward is to take time to be still. There’s nothing that feeds a creative soul like taking time to soak up life and marinate in the moments that matter. Sara Evans embraced that philosophy, and now, six years after her last studio album, she’s back with Stronger, a landmark record filled with the kind of gutsy explorations on life and love that have made Evans one of the most compelling female vocalists of her generation. If people are surprised to hear that Evans is back, it’s because it didn’t seem as though she’d ever gone away. She continued to tour and maintain close contact with her active fan base. She became an author, signing a three-book deal with Thomas Nelson Publishers, which has already published two of her novels – The Sweet By and By andSoftly and Tenderly. She released a greatest hits collection that included four new tunes, and she’s continually remained a favorite at country radio thanks to such hits as “Born to Fly,” “Suds in the Bucket,” “I Keep Looking,” “Perfect,” “No Place That Far” and “A Real Fine Place to Start.” Away from the spotlight, much has happened to Evans since her last studio record. She weathered a high profile divorce, yet focused on her three children, took time to heal and found love again with football-star-turned-sportscaster Jay Barker. They married, and Evans moved from Nashville to Birmingham, AL, devoting the last few years to happily focusing on home and their blended family of seven children. “I cannot believe it’s been six years,” she says of her self-imposed hiatus. “In so many ways, I feel like I’m just beginning. I really and truly do. I feel like I’m just starting my life, my career, and there’s nothing that I can’t do. I’m definitely more confident now than I’ve ever been in my life.”
